You can really tell that JVJ's parents both died when he was young, that his sister married when he was young enough that he didn't get to see her and their parents have a continued relationship after (or maybe even they were too poor — too miserable — to have the means by which to keep up with one another), and that when his brother in-law died JVJ really saw himself stepping up to take his place — a substitution rather than a community.
