[THE EYES OF MY MOTHER] 2016

"Francisca (Kika Magalhaes) has been unfazed by death from an early age because her mother, formerly a surgeon in Portugal, imbued her with a thorough understanding of the human anatomy. When tragedy shatters her family's idyllic life in the countryside, her deep trauma gradually awakens some unique curiosities. As she grows up, her desire to connect with the world around her takes a distinctly dark form."

Nicolas Pesce on his directorial debut, and garnered six film awards (and 17 nominations) on this 2016 sundance feature.

The film delves into themes of trauma, isolation, and distorted human connection, every scene is carefully curated; the film was shot in excuisite black and white; the sound/music incorporated here are errie and very off-putting, a film that's definitely not for everyone.

A powerful performance by the lead actress, Kika Magalhães. The supporting actors/actresses really played their roles perfectly and it helped shape around Kika's character development in the film.

The thing that made it feel unsettling throughout the whole film was Kika's innocence, from childhood to her adolescent stage, she built her own world, with her own values, how little it may be; she, on her own self, knew that what she was doing was acceptable.

Not for everyone, as it deals with triggerring subject matter.

I'd give this a solid 10/10

THE EYES OF MY MOTHER (2016)

💁‍♀️? Strong female lead? (Sort of)

A very aesthetic film with a poorly executed plot (if there was a plot at all), disorienting cuts (time jumps?), and a mismatched title. The cinematics of the movie were very nice and artful but in the end it wasn't enough to make up for the rest of the film.

This girl, Francisca’s mom got murdered by a door to door bible salesman looking guy (Uh oh!) who is then kept in the barn next door. Francis takes care of her widowed father and the murderer but performs surgery on him where she removed his eyes (and much later we realize she also snipped his vocal cords which would have been nice to know right away but it wasn't called "My Mothers Fucking Vocal Cords"). Her father dies and she takes a weird bath with him, very aesthetic and probably the best part of the movie.

Bible guy tries to escape and Franny just stabs the shit out of him. Bitch hops a ride with a mom who is like "sure, hold my baby" and (surprise!) crazy Francie takes this woman's kid. Moments later the mom is chained up (minus eyes and with snipped vocal cords) and the baby is a little kid now with his "new mom" and the strange “thing" in the barn. Ends with the police coming, honestly so unremarkable I forgot how Fran even got got but she did so it’s fine and dandy.

A kinder mother would sure seek her sons, even if it was her who abandoned them.

(Just a Thought of Marika in ragged clothes and covered in veil, unfortunately didn’t hide her grace, descending down to the shunning ground she made to cage her rage and grief from the time long past, just to see her sons who she refused to hold and look at their births. SADLY THAT’S NOT WHAT HAPPENED AHUGHGAHHHHH)

so your friends and loved ones try to help you by talking to them, and the person must be saying something to them, because they look at you differently now. but you have no idea what it was, all you hear is static.

you try to tell them not to listen to the person, but no matter what you do, no matter how much you plead with them, they look up at you with suspicion-hatred-fear and just run. they don’t care where they’re going, just that you’re not there. and you can’t do anything to stop it.

the more that the people in your life care about you, the worse it is, because anyone who tries to help is turned against you. so you are just gradually shut out of your own life by the people you love the most, until eventually you no longer recognize your surroundings.

I just saw this video talking about actresses who've had to wear sexualized outfits on film that made them uncomfortable (think Margot Robbie in Suicide Squad) and it brought up an ongoing concern of mine about how films and tv shows are way more explicit now than they've been before. Thinking about how many actresses have been topless or nude on camera when it's totally unnecessary) Like I know Hollywood is experimental and would show sex and nudity in their films, I don't have a problem with that it's just how disproportionate the amount of women vs men who have to be naked and sexualized in film is. It's misogyny, pure and simple. Forcing actresses to put their bodies and sexuality on display for the pleasure of male directors and a male audience. And I hate that you can never point out how many actresses have come out and said that no, they didn't like wearing sexualized outfits on screen, they didn't like going nude/being pressured to go nude, they don't like sex scenes or explicit rape scenes but still anytime anyone mentions this you have to fight puritan allegations because god forbid you question how a notoriously sexualized and objectified marginalized community seems to always be sexualized and objectified in media.
