#Enemy Aliens

"We don’t know a lot. I’m guessing the three men never met in life. Two were buried in the summer of 1915. In February 1916, the third of them died. They might have known each other before they got to Kingston — but since we don’t know where they came from, or when they arrived, there’s no way of knowing. They weren’t the only ones who died in captivity — 20 men succumbed after being confined in Kingston’s Rockwood Asylum for the Criminally Insane, also known as the Rockwood Lunatic Asylum. Eight were misidentified as “Austrians” while the other 12 were Germans. All were branded as “enemy aliens” during Canada’s first national internment operations of 1914-1920. “Dozens” of those deemed “insane,” collected from various asylums across Canada, were among the 2,000 or so “aliens” returned to Europe after the war. The first repatriates sailed in July 1919 aboard the SS Sicilian. The last batch were on the SS Melita, which steamed east from St. John in March 1920. None of them had any choice. They were deported whence they came.
The Rockwood three we know something about were named Dezső Benscura, Walter Grooham and Andreas Moritsky. Whether those are accurate renderings of their names, recorded by immigration officials or jailers who had little knowledge or interest in the languages, nations or faith groups of eastern Europe, I can’t say. As noted on Sept. 30, 1920, in a final report tabled by General Sir William Desmond Otter, the officer in charge of the Office of Internment Operations, 8,579 men along with 81 women and 156 children, were herded into 24 camps behind Canadian barbed wire. Of that number, 106, a majority of them “Austrians,” were deemed “insane” and placed in provincial institutions — at Ponoka, Alta.; Essondale, B.C.; Brandon, Man.; Hamilton, Rockwood, and Mimico, Ont.; St Jean de Dieu, Que.; with three other internees hospitalized in Nova Scotia. Only one man, an “Austrian,” died of “insanity.” What killed the other two at Rockwood is not preserved in the historical record.
Gen. Otter claimed that “great care was observed in having the cause of death established and recorded, the place of burial marked, due regard being paid to the latter ceremony, while the effects of the deceased were cared for and whenever possible their nearest of kin informed.”
Records were kept about some deaths, like the names of the six men killed attempting to escape including the dates on which they were shot. And perhaps the possessions of some of the 107 deceased internees were, somehow, returned to their families. But the three buried in Kingston were laid to rest in unmarked graves, somewhere within the confines of St Mary’s Roman Catholic Cemetery, no one knows exactly where. That they ended up in this burial ground is likely because they were Catholics, as many immigrants from the Austro-Hungarian Empire would have been. Or perhaps it was because their mortal remains were not wanted at the Cataraqui Cemetery, a territory then reserved for this city’s Anglo-Celtic and Protestant elites.
Were they buried close to each other? No one knows. Was a prayer said over each man before he was covered, as Gen. Otter wrote? I hope so. But I doubt that any of their family members or friends left in the “old country” — somewhere in that multinational, multi-confessional, and multilingual Austro-Hungarian Empire that would itself disintegrate at the end of the First World War — would ever find out what happened. These men simply disappeared. Having left their homelands hoping for a better life they never suspected that arriving with an Austro-Hungarian passport would mark them, under the terms of the War Measures Act, as “enemy aliens,” subject to detention and forced labour. Even more galling was that they knew they had done no wrong. They had immigrated legally. They were not criminals. And yet, following the outbreak of the Great War, they found themselves suddenly treated as prisoners-of-war, without just cause. Thousands of Ukrainians and other Europeans suffered various state-sanctioned indignities. For many, the racism and xenophobia they endured would be debilitating." - Lubomyr Luciuk, "They will be remembered together," Kingston Whig-Standard. July 14, 2023. Opium Column.

Reviewed: The Teeth of Ice Starring Paul McGann's Eighth #DoctorWho
Seeing how Big Finish are pretty much dominating the market with original Doctor Who content, it’s hard to miss if anyone else is attempting the same thing. After all, I don’t see much chatter on X (nee Twitter) about BBC Audio Doctor Who releases apart from audiobooks of Target novelisations. Thus, it was quite a surprise, when in Bluewater’s Waterstones’ audiobook section (when I say…

Prompt (395)
An ominous shadow fell over the city. The hero and villain paused their fight to look up at the looming, giant spaceship slowly blocking out the sun.
“Another alien invasion?” The villain said, annoyed.
The hero sighed, nodding. “That makes twice this month.”
The villain stomped their foot in frustration. “I just got you back! Now you’re going to be busy saving the world again!”

some thoughts about jace during the dace and his relationship to kingship and rhaenyra⁓
rhaenys dies in rook's rest and corlys is angry because it should've been rhaenyra. Jace must take the reins if they want to win. Rhaenyra must wake so he takes care of his siblings, her weakest points, so he sends them far and wide so she will not fear for their life. except..... it'll be jace next. he didn't think of himself.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and in the next part: "Prince Jacaerys soon brought the Lord of the Tides back into the fold by naming him the Hand of the Queen" Jace said, let's get this bitch on the road!! but it's soo indicative of what were jace's priorities and there being some kind of friction or at least disappointment in his dynamic with rhaenyra that she's not doing what he thinks she must.
jace's list: 1) bring corlys back as hand 2) plan the rest of the war 3) bring rhaenyra back 4) win war? 5) ?????? 6) ?????? 7) mourn luke after (or never).
Tumblr media
"syrax" crrrazy because Jace is really counting on rhaenyra to be A Queen. he's fighting tooth and nail for her to get back to the realm of the living. he won't ever give up on her! it's really so sad.
like imagine the great strain jace is put in because he must compensate for rhaenyra's absence. appeasing corlys, comfort his siblings for being separated so soon after Luke's death, the war, being a good son and heir. and also, to be the most senior available dragonrider on the island, their only line of defense!! he was fifteen!! coming up with the dragonseeds plan must have been such a relief.

Fandom: The Mandalorian / Alien VS Predator Crossover
Pairing: Younger! Din Djarin x Sacrifice! Reader
Summary: As Din prepares for the ritual of swearing the Creed, he contemplates his past and the future he wants to achieve. On another planet, the one his people are headed to, you are told of your role in the hunt to take place. In the pyramid that everyone knows means death for those that visit. A sacrifice to be made for the Mandalorian's to perform their ritual.
A/N: this is the first tentative writing i've done for the idea that i shared over here. it's just a silly little thing helping me destress from everything going on. no warnings, because i don't have any big ones outlined yet. essentially this is mando'a culture, but the creed is the hunt that takes place for the predators in the alien franchise to prove themselves, fighting aliens and all that fun stuff!
Tumblr media
O'r echoy par ijaat.
In search of honor.
It echoes in his head as he stares at the helmet handed to him from the armorer. He's had it in his possession for nearly ten years now, to be worn at all times. never to be removed. not unless it was around his family, his partner, his children. All of which he doesn't have, having been adopted into the culture he is now devoted to. He had been raised by them, taken in when he had nothing. It's finally his turn to earn the title of Mandalorian, after years of training, of sparring, and learning the weapons praised for protection and defense. It's his turn to prove his worth and earn his signet. If he survives the trial, the hunt, devoted himself to the ritual and solidify himself as a true member of the people who had given him everything he could ever remember. Then he would have achieved what they anticipated of him, proved himself.
The weight of his armor had been heavy like his thoughts when he first dressed in them, the heavy padding beneath it adding even more to his then small frame, just a boy. He had barely been seven when he had first been given it, each year it increased in weight as more of the precious beskar was needed to decorate his growing body. But it's something he's gotten accustomed to. He now feels it's absence when he readies for sleep each night and before he dons it each morning. feels the loss of it when he's bathing and eating alone in his room. He's hopeful the thoughts become less so just as the beskar had. A comfort rather than a daunting new reality.
He wants to survive; he wants to earn his place. He only hopes he's strong enough.
It’s not a death sentence, it’s an honor.
And it’s now on his shoulders and the only path he sees to follow.
Tumblr media
You're in disbelief. The summons that called you has you standing beside six other eldest children of the most renown families of the city, two other girls and four boys. All varying ages, the youngest is a boy, not even ten. The first child of the family you know heads the cultivation of food for the city. He's openly crying, though his father and your own ignore the shine of the tears on his still chubby cheeks.
It's an honor, a way to serve your family, your community. The sentiment is repeated over and over, in the face of each of you as you're dismissed. The day is tomorrow, has been marked for nearly as long as you've been alive. The pyramid in the middle of the desert an entire night's travel away, even on the fastest ship. In the midst of the never-ending desert that surrounds your city, the only on the planet. To ensure should anything go awry or the hunt go wrong, there was no risk for it to get to the population.
It will become your tomb as you heed the commands of your culture and family, as you lay still and allow for an alien creature to attach itself to you, to use you as a host for the chosen species the Mandalorian’s have honed over centuries and use in their own ritual. A way to prove that their training and fighting is either the best or to see the flaws in which they could improve them in order to continue to develop some of the strongest warriors in the galaxy.
It's a cruel cycle, that you must give your live for another to gain meaning and status in their own. you loathed the life you were born into, the injustice of it. the inability to have control over your own autonomy, raised like cattle and given without argument to further another's notion of honor.
An honor and a way to show your devotion to those that made it all possible for your way of life to flourish and thrive.
A sacrifice you should be happy to play a part in.
But it was death, that much you were certain of. Even as they dress you in the most extravagant fabrics you've ever felt against your skin. Soft silt, plush pelts, heavy jewelry. It was too much to handle, the meaning behind it all, the reason for it all.
It’s not an honor it’s a death sentence.
A weight on your shoulders, but you’d be damned if it’s the only path for you to take.

"Rocco Perri Has Been Freed From Internment Camp," Hamilton Spectator. October 16, 1943. Page 7. ---- MINISTER OF JUSTICE ORDERS RELEASE AFTER STUDY OF CASE ---- Col. Hon. C. W. G. Gibson Confirms Report of Liberation ---- HELD THREE YEARS ---- Lengthy Residence Here Qualifies Him to Stay in Canada ---- Rocco Perri, formerly of Hamilton, has been released from internment and is now residing in Toronto, it was learned to-day. Perri, whose name is known to most Hamiltonians, and who is known personally to many persons here, was given his freedom ten days ago after being at a Petawawa camp since 1940.
Never Naturalized Col. Hon. C. W. G. Gibeon, Minister of National Revenues, when questioned in Hamilton to-day, confirmed the report of Perri's Iiberation. He said the release was made by order of the Minister of Justice following a review of the case, this being the usual procedure.
Perri, It was reported, is not naturalized, although he has lived in Canada for the greater part of his life. No further action is anticipated by the federal authorities in regard to the case, it was stated by Col. Gibson, as Perri has been in this country long enough to establish residence under Immigration laws and he may remain in Canada if he so desires.
Most of the Italian civilians have been released from the Internment camps in the Dominion, it was disclosed by Col. Gibson. Asked if Italy's break with the Axis and subsequent declaration of war against her former partners would affect the status of Italian military prisoners, the minister said he was not able to give information on this question at the moment. He thought that it would be for the Allied Governments to deal with and said any decision which they reached would be carried into effect by all Governments of the Allied Nations.
Perri lived on Bay street south when in Hamilton.
