Summary: When General Wei loses his golden core in the process of winning a war, the Emperor comes up with a plan so he can remain his right hand man. It would be a lot easier for both of them if Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji weren't already pining for each other. Kay's comments: Wangxian are absolutely shameless in this story and I love that so much for them. The outsider POV strewn in is absolutely great and I loved how Wangxian's emotions mirrored each other. Excerpt: Mo Donghai turned along with the rest of the room to see a tall figure draped in the finest of silks and laces. His black outer robe trailed behind him and was cut to reveal the wine-dark inner robe. As sheer and revealing as the robes were, there was no doubt what position this person held in the Emperor’s household. A number of glittering jade hairpins decorated the crown of the person’s head, and the long hair framed a face with delicate features. A very familiar face. His stomach dropped. He hoped he was wrong. He turned to the minister next to him, choking the words out. “Is that… is that Wei Wuxian?” The other man looked equally as stunned, but nodded, confirming his worst suspicions. As Mo Donghai looked across the room, there were whispers from everyone as they identified the man. Some were greedily drinking in the sight of Wei Wuxian, while others were staring in horror at the idea that the virtuous Emperor was taking a concubine, a former general at that. The Emperor ignored all of them, staring only at the man walking towards him.

Wei Wuxian had noble blood, although not many liked to remember, so using it to their advantage both the Jiang clan and the Lan clan signed a contract for a arranged marriage between him and their second young master so their claim to the emperor's throne would be stronger after the fiasco with the first young master and his "friend".

He did not know his newly wed husband, haven't seen his face outside of paintings and rumors. The maids and servants around him all treated him with the utmost respect, so unlike a year or so ago when he was considered one of them even though he lived as a young master himself.

They dressed him in luxurious red wedding clothes that felt too heavy and tight on him, with a veil to cover his face and only to be lifted at his wedding chambers by his husband's hand. Everyone told him what to expect and what to do at this important night, even so far as hiring someone to teach him how to care for his body in case his husband turns out to be one to be rough.

But that ended up being futile, his husband has not visited his chamber, even if Wei Wuxian waited the whole night awake, sitting politely on the red cushion between the table with, by now sour, tea and the red bed, veil still on his head and staining everything he saw in the same color as every fabric around him.

Feeling wronged and humiliated, Wei Wuxian dumped the tea on the steps in front of his chamber, deciding to wear his veil until his husband lifted it, with the intention of humiliating the Lan clan back and securing a good divorce if needed.

After the awkward and full of tension breakfast with his new family, Wei Wuxian decided to stay in his chambers reading whatever book he found around, asking for more to his personal servant.

When asked why he wouldn't leave he would say the same thing, "I have no official duties in this household, that means my husband does not need me. I should act accordingly and keep myself away from his eyes."

That went as long as some months, almost half a year, until his husband had enough and finally visited him himself, and did not send someone else.

And, oh, his husband was as beautiful as he was told, although still cold and stubborn.

"You are still wearing it." Lan Wangji said, ignoring the tea in front of him "Why?"

"Why, you ask." Wei Wuxian chuckled "Only a husband can lift a wife's veil, during their wedding night and before consuming it. My husband neither visited me nor wishes to consume our marriage, there are no reasons for me to lift it with my own hands."

Lan Wangji tried to lift it, but Wei Wuxian wouldn't let him, no matter how many times he tried.

After long weeks of meetings and having verbal fights disguised with flowery and poetic speech, Lan Wangji finally lifted the veil and saw his husband's face.

Who would know that love could bloom between them?

it bugs me when people treat lan wangji like a generic yaoi seme (i.e. filthy rich, selfish, arrogantly dismissive and unsatisfied, lords his position over those weaker or poorer, near-universal advantages over others, etc.

lan wangji IS way more privileged than wei wuxian, but lan xichen and the lan elders have FAR more power, control, and political advantage over him. lan wangji single-handedly physically fought 33 members of his own family to protect the man he loved, and they whipped him to near death for it. they forcibly imprisoned ("secluded") him and took advantage of his bedridden state to join the other clans in ambushing and assassinating wei wuxian.

my point is, he's not a stereotypical arrogant jerk with unending influence over others. if anything, being a dom top in bed isn't an expression of power for lan wangji, but an expression of freedom. he can be true to himself, his love, and his desires without being held back by his family and society's politics.

Emperor's Smile | 天子笑

How could I not make a post regarding Wei Wuxian's love for alcohol, more precisely about the iconic Emperor's Smile.

What is the Emperor's Smile:

Emperor's Smile (天子笑, Tiānzǐ Xiào) is a liquor sold in the city of Gusu where the Lan Sect is located.

The Wei Wuxian's Emperor Smile Tea is a black tea infused with Burbon, Rooibos, Ginger, cardamom, nutmeg, cloves, cornflowers, calendula, and vanilla. It has a very faint smoky flavor and when you drink it, it takes you to the burial grounds. Lan Wangji describes the taste as fragrant and mellow.

Emperor's Smile history in MDZS:

Although liquor is forbidden in the Cloud Recesses, as a student Wei Wuxian repeatedly breaks curfew to smuggle Emperor's Smile into the residence to share with his friends (Jiang Cheng & Nie Huaisang).

At the Burial Mounds, Wei Wuxian and Uncle Four agree that Emperor's Smile is indisputably the best wine they have tasted.

After Wei Wuxian's death, Lan Wangji purchases Emperor's Smile and drinks it for the first time. Though he does not like the taste, he understands why Wei Wuxian does.

Lan Wangji then keeps seven or eight jars of Emperor's Smile hidden beneath a floorboard in his room. However, upon his return to the Cloud Recesses, Wei Wuxian promptly discovers and drinks two jars of the wine, and refills them with water as a prank. This turns ironic later when Lan Wangji fetches Wei Wuxian two jars to drink, yet the two jars are water-filled jars. Lan Xichen, notably, sees the alcohol and allows it despite the rule against drinking.

After returning to the Cloud Recesses as a married couple, Lan Wangji keeps Emperor's Smile in the Jingshi for Wei Wuxian to drink.

Equivalents:

I somehow want to assume Emperor’s Smile is Baijiu (白酒), a Chinese liquor (or grain spirits). It is a colorless liquor typically coming in between 35% and 60% alcohol by volume (ABV).

It is distilled from various grains like sorghum, rice, wheat, corn, and/or millet. Every kind of baijiu uses its own type of qū for fermentation to create a distinct and characteristic flavor profile.

The four main "types" are defined as the rice aroma (a floral, light flavor), light aroma (a sweet, floral taste), sauce aroma (a sharp taste akin to soy sauce), and strong aroma (spicy and fruity).

Prices vary a lot depending on where you live and the brand, it can go as cheap as a can of beer up to thousands.

Note: I don’t have that much knowledge of alcohol as I rarely drink, so I tried my best by doing research.

Lan Wangji's POV in this first chapter was amazing, the way he seemed so detached and truly above everyone else like an Emperor is supossed to be, but then he immediately melted when he actually got to interact with his Empress, so good! Excerpt: It would seem that once Lan Wangji was reminded of his Empress' existence, he finds traces of him everywhere within the Cloud Recesses. Minister Herald Meng speaks of the Empress' help in making sure the delegations from the far South were served a suitably spiced fare, and Nie Huaisang flutters a fan adorned with golden finches that the Empress painted for the younger Nie. There is a strange feeling in the pit of Lan Wangji's stomach, like one does when one accidentally misses a step, at these small revelations of how much his Empress' life seem to intertwine with everyone else but himself. And the way things were going, he probably ought not be surprised that his own heir is not exempt to it.

LWJ awoke from his wedding night feeling sore and strangely empty. He pulled himself to his elbows with a sharp hiss, wincing as a bolt of pain shot through his spine down to his rear.

He looked at the room around him with little comprehension. How had he gotten here? What was happening? Who was that man snoring softly beside him, and why did he have a bloody bite on the side of his-

LWJ felt his stomach drop. The emperor. He had dared to mark the emperor. The world went still around him as he realised he would be hung for this crime, for keeping the most important man in the empire beholden to him.

He sucked in a shuddering gasp, the cold air of the royal chamber burning his lungs, and wracking his body with shivers. What had he done?

The Lans would be lucky to denounce him and keep themselves alive after this, all because of his foolish mistake. LWJ felt ill at the thought of his family, exterminated down to the last child, the last servant due to-

The sheets shifted as the emperor awoke beside him. Lan Wangji closed his eyes as the man turned to face him, a worn sigh pushing its way past his lips. He knew this was it. Emperor Wuxian must hate him now - would have every right to strike him down where he lay after the crime he'd committed. LWJ braced himself for the impact of a blade, or a fist, certain that this was to be his end.

To his surprise, the emperor chuckled. Soon, a hand ran along the side of his face, fingers trailing gently through his hair.

"Still asleep..."

Something soft, like the first buds of spring brushed over his forehead.

"If only I could join you. Blasted early meetings..."

LWJ laid stunned as the bed moved beneath him, the emperor rising up out of it to face his morning court, seemingly unaffected by the throbbing wound bitten into his mating gland.

The omega was stunned. Where he had expected rage - hatred even - the emperor was...content, if his scent was to be believed.

A small spark of pleasure hit his nose, and on reflex LWJ opened his eyes a fraction to see what had caused it. The emperor, stripped of his finery, stood illuminated under the early morning sunlight, appearing to be naught but a common man. He gazed into the copper mirror positioned before him, trailing his fingers along the wound LWJ had so stupidly inflicted, a look of wonder upon his face.

LWJ swiftly closed his eyes again, too confused to understand what he'd seen. The emperor wasn't upset with him. If anything, he seemed almost happy to be branded as an omega's mate. His traitorous heart beat thunderously in his breast at the thought, and he worked frantically to calm it. He was getting carried away.

He'd been married into the harem at the will of his uncle upon his eighteenth year. Before even getting a taste of life outside of his family's home, he had been bound to the palace, any childish thoughts of adventure or romance wrenched away from him in an instant. He was...merely projecting his own longing upon the only person close enough to be capable of granting any of his wishes; a man too great to be bothered with such trivial matters as an omega's heart. Again, a soft kiss was placed upon his head, a gentle hand skimming possessively over his own bruised neck.

The emperor soon strode out the door, unknowingly leaving a flustered, hopeful omega behind him. But even ignorant of the chaos he'd sown, somehow that emperor took very gentle care of the heart he'd unwittingly been granted.

Lan Wangji goes into a fevered rut and accidentally bonds with Wei Wuxian. When they next meet, he remembers none of it, and Wei Wuxian is determined to keep the bond a secret—even when he's sent to the Cloud Recesses to be a consort in Lan Wangji's harem.
