Hello everyone! This month’s theme is the first of the “A Trip To...” series, a collection of book lists covering different cultures, nations, and regions from all over the world. These will make an appearance every once in a while.

Our first trip is to Ireland, suggested to me by @bowieziggyfan. There’s no particular reason that Ireland is our first destination, but I can promise that not all countries are going to be European or English-speaking. I’m going to make sure that these lists cover diverse cultures and communities. 

I’m now going to explain the rules I set myself for these “A Trip To...” book lists. Feel free to skip this part if you’re only interested in the books and not the process behind choosing them:

The author must have a connection to the country (either they have the nationality, are permanent residents there, or their family comes from there)

At least half of the book must take place in said country (for instance, although Oscar Wilde is Irish, The Picture of Dorian Gray is not on this list because it is not set in Ireland).

Alternatively, if the book is not set in that country but deals with issues of its identity especially in regards to emigration, it can be included (which is why Brooklyn is on this list).

If it’s possible to make a (good and varied) list for a specific country, then I won’t rope it in with other countries (ex: I have to do Japanese and Korean literature as separate lists and not under the umbrella of “East Asian”). However, if I’m unable to do that because there aren’t enough translated books, then I will group them.

As long as it meets the other requirements, the book can be of any genre. 

Okay, enough babbling. Let’s get to the books!

At Swim-Two Birds, by Flann O’brien:

In Charleston, S.C., officials warned that the storm thrust the water system alarmingly close to catastrophe. In Selma, Ala., a series of major leaks led the mayor to declare a state of emergency. Pipes also burst at the airports in Atlanta and Birmingham, Ala., inserting yet another bump into a holiday travel season transformed into an obstacle course of cancellations and delays.

Americans abroad (Washington Post) We all know that America is a nation of immigrants (with the obvious exception of its long-marginalized Native population). But every so often, it feels like it’s on the verge of becoming a nation of emigrants. According to recent Gallup polls, as many as 15 percent of Americans say they want to leave the country permanently, and even more say they would consider expatriating under the right circumstances. But only a small fraction of Americans have actually taken the plunge, data shows. While the United States is the top destination for immigrants worldwide, hosting about three times as many immigrants as runners-up Germany and Saudi Arabia, it’s a paltry 26th in terms of sending immigrants abroad. Our analysis of U.N. data finds that just one American emigrates for every six Indians or four Mexicans. The United Nations and World Bank estimate the population of American-born people abroad at around 2.8 million as of 2020.

Mexico draws more asylum-seekers despite grisly violence (AP) Albert Rivera knows well how dangerous Mexico can be: He sometimes wears a bulletproof vest around the compound of bright yellow buildings that he built into one of the nation’s largest migrant shelters. His phone stores more evidence in the form of stomach-churning videos that gangs sent migrants to warn of consequences for disobeying demands. But across town from the Agape Mision Mundial shelter, many migrants are grateful for a chance to settle here. That’s where Mexico’s asylum office greets foreigners who consider the border city of Tijuana a relatively safe place to live with an abundance of jobs. The jarring contrast speaks to Mexico’s conflicted status. It is a country where violence and inequality chase many people to seek a better life in the United States. For others it offers a measure of peace and prosperity beyond what’s available in their homelands.

After presidency, unclear fate for Brazil’s brash Bolsonaro (AP) Jair Bolsonaro told supporters that the future could only bring him three possibilities: arrest, death or a second term as Brazil’s president. one of those outcomes came to pass. And his Oct. 30 loss to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva set off two months of relative silence for the self-styled standard-bearer of the Brazilian conservative movement. Bolsonaro’s oft-cited motto is “God, Family, Country,” and as president he handed more power to the armed forces and loosened gun restrictions. Many of Bolsonaro’s far-right supporters remain in his thrall and have camped outside military buildings, pleading futilely for army intervention that would keep the president in power. But Bolsonaro authorized his chief-of-staff to preside over the transition process, and moving trucks have started showing up at the presidential palace and residence.

Britain’s Soaring Energy Costs Strain Crisis Responders (NYT) The day after an arctic blast of air hit Britain, plunging temperatures below freezing and blanketing the country in frost, a 72-year-old man finally got through to the advice phone line of Warm and Well, a charitable service in Gloucestershire, in the west of England. The man, whose name was not disclosed, said he had been calling for days and leaving voice mail messages with the nonprofit, which provides advice and emergency funds for people struggling to pay their energy bills. Teresa Hewitt, the energy adviser who answered his call, could only commiserate. “We are absolutely overwhelmed at the moment,” she told him. She was one of seven staff members answering the phones that day in early December who were attempting to field 71 calls. Across Britain this winter, more people are falling into debt and sitting in cold or damp homes as a result of rising energy bills, which have helped push the country’s inflation rate above 10 percent. This sharp increase in what is called “fuel poverty,” when 10 percent of household income is spent on energy bills, is stretching the resources of charities that provide free advice, emergency funds or resources to get access to heat.

Sarajevo’s agony echoes as Ukraine braces for a dark winter SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzegovina (AP)—Vildana Mutevelić huddled in her apartment with her two young children and elderly cousins. They had no heat, electricity or running water as artillery shells tore the roof off their building and almost took their lives. To survive, she improvised. Mutevelić made a lamp out of used engine oil, water and a shoelace for a wick. She cooked on a fire fueled by books, furniture, shoes or clothes. A plastic spoon, she discovered, when lit, worked well as a temporary flashlight if she ventured outside. Plastic sheets covered the blown-out windows, a flimsy buffer against the bitter cold. Her news of the world came from a neighbor who powered a radio with a car battery. “The electricity failed right away,” Mutevelić, 70, said through a translator. “And everything we had in our freezers, it melted. Those were our stocks, basically. That’s all.” For Mutevelić, these are memories from three decades ago, when Bosnian Serbs besieged Sarajevo, causing thousands of civilian casualties. But it’s all happening again in Ukraine. Russia’s armed forces have aimed their firepower at Ukraine’s energy infrastructure as winter weather sets in.

Hard-Line Positions by Russia and Ukraine Dim Hope for Peace Talks (NYT) As the battle for Ukraine turns into a bloody, mile-by-mile fight in numbing cold, Ukrainian and Russian officials have insisted that they are willing to discuss making peace. But with a drumbeat of statements in recent days making clear that each side’s demands are flatly unacceptable to the other, there appears to be little hope for serious negotiations in the near future. Ukraine this week proposed a “peace” summit by the end of February, but said Russia could participate only if it first faces a war-crimes tribunal. That drew a frosty response from the Kremlin, with Foreign Minister Sergey V. Lavrov saying that Kyiv must accept all of Russia’s demands, including that it give up four Ukrainian regions that Moscow claims to have annexed. “Otherwise,” he said, “the Russian Army will deal with this issue.” The hard-line positions suggest that both sides believe they have more to gain on the battlefield, analysts say.

Lack of info on China’s COVID-19 surge stirs global concerns (AP) Moves by the U.S., Japan and others to mandate COVID-19 tests for passengers arriving from China reflect global concern that new variants could emerge in its ongoing explosive outbreak—and the government may not inform the rest of the world quickly enough. There have been no reports of new variants to date. But given the country’s track record, the worry is that China may not be sharing data on any signs of evolving strains that could spark fresh outbreaks elsewhere. The U.S., in announcing a negative test requirement Wednesday for passengers from China, cited both the surge in infections and what it said was a lack of information, including the genomic sequencing of the virus strains in the country.

U.S. Scrambles to Stop Iran From Providing Drones for Russia (NYT) The Biden administration has embarked on a broad effort to halt Iran’s ability to produce and deliver drones to Russia for use in the war in Ukraine, an endeavor that has echoes of its yearslong program to cut off Tehran’s access to nuclear technology. In interviews in the United States, Europe and the Middle East, a range of intelligence, military and national security officials have described an expanding U.S. program that aims to choke off Iran’s ability to manufacture the drones, make it harder for the Russians to launch the unmanned “kamikaze” aircraft and—if all else fails—to provide the Ukrainians with the defenses necessary to shoot them out of the sky. The breadth of the effort has become clearer in recent weeks. The administration has accelerated its moves to deprive Iran of the Western-made components needed to manufacture the drones being sold to Russia after it became apparent from examining the wreckage of intercepted drones that they are stuffed with made-in-America technology.

Netanyahu government: West Bank settlements top priority (AP) Benjamin Netanyahu’s incoming hard-line Israeli government put West Bank settlement expansion at the top of its priority list on Wednesday, vowing to legalize dozens of illegally built outposts and annex the occupied territory as part of its coalition deal with ultranationalist allies. The coalition agreements, released a day before the government is to be sworn into office, also included contentious judicial reforms, as well as generous stipends for ultra-Orthodox men who prefer to study instead of work. The package laid the groundwork for what is expected to be a stormy beginning for the country’s most religious and right-wing government in history, potentially putting it at odds with large parts of the Israeli public, rankling Israel’s closest allies and escalating tensions with the Palestinians.

What was your 2020 year like in the end, reading or otherwise? What were your best or worst reads? Here’s a short overview of my reading year 2020 and also a fun post of all the things I did in 2020. I made a post of my top 10 reads of 2020 but actually, the books that overshadow everything is The mirror visitor series (A winter’s promise is, I think, the English name of the first book). If you haven’t yet, I really recommend you check them out. I found them outstanding and so refreshingly different. As for my worst read of the year, Christmas - A Biography by J. Flanders was very disapointing, and I was sad to find that neither The Heirs of Hammerfell (Marion Zimmer Bradley, Darkover series) nor Take A Thief (Mercedes Lackey, Heralds of Valdemar series) lived up to my expectations for these series I had loved as a teen. These all still got two stars, and it seems I am getting ever better in picking books I will enjoy, since I found only one book with a 1-star rating in my list: Sarah Lark’s Die Zeit der Feuerblüten. It is a “historical” book which I read only ironically. Her books are nearly always about a man and a woman who emigrate to New Zealand in the 19th century and, overcoming hardships, find love in each other and a prosperous home. It was even worse than I expected. (Oh no I just found out there actually is a translation into English “The Fire Blossom”).

What are your 2021 goals, reading or otherwise? What books are you looking forward to? Luckily, bookbandit continued their tbrbusterchallenge for this year and Ia am again taking part. I am looking forward to the next novella by Ben Aaronovitch, What Abigail Did that Summer. Erica Johansen will publish another book and, although I love her Tearling trilogy, I am a little hesitant with the upcoming book. It is a prequel focusing on the generation before the “original” trilogy. I often have problems with prequels that are set so close to the original series, having many of the same characters though younger. I think it is really difficult to write.

What are the posts I’ve missed that you’re particularly proud of or think I need to see for reasons? I think I already shared most of my recent posts in my answers above *lol* Maybe this could be of interest to you: coming February, there will be a “pro” feature on TheStoryGraph. Unfortunately, the early bird promotion is over and I only learned about this (all of it) on Dec 30 by change. 

What is the current book gossip, tea, or discourse? Anyone get cancelled that I should know about? I get the impression that all big discourses have moved to twitter. But I recently found a youtube channel that recaps and talks about these things: Jess Owens has a “book communiTEA” segment where you get all the information relatively stress free

What do you want to know about me, my life, my goals, etc.? This is doubly sad because for one, I do not get cake when I visit my sister’s tomorrow (and did not get any cake when I visited last Saturday) and secondly, I cannot take my “currently reading” photos because I really like the layout with the cake for the books. I have a few photos still in stock, but none of the newer books. Also, no cake for me to eat!

Let’s Try This Again

So I think I’m back? Maybe? December seems to have been long enough to clear my head, and hopefully I’ll be able to keep the right perspective about myself while handling the negativity that can be Tumblr. (Jury’s still out as to whether it’s ethical to review books as a white person, though, let alone write ‘em.)

I’m going to try to be more mindful of myself on here, and be here less, and be more decisive about blacklisting and unfollowing so as to maintain my mental health, so if you see me ignoring posts or ignoring you, that’d be why. It’s very much me, and what I need to be doing.

Anyway, my life: December in book retail is wild at the best of times, and 2020 was of course no exception. The Great British Baking Show is as delightful as everyone’s been saying. I got some excellent gifts for Christmas. I’ve done a butt-load of reading and managed to finish the year with 101 reads, if you include rereads and picture books, which of course I do. We still do not have snow. I’ve missed you guys.

I’m going to try, in the next little while, to get my 2020 reads list updated, but I’m not going to be reviewing any of those titles. I don’t have it in me, but I’m happy to chat about anything I’ve read if you’re curious. I don’t know how much other bookish content I’ll be posting, apart from the odd photo. I still don’t feel the excitement of OMIGAWDBOOKS that I used to—but please, please tempt me back to that if you can.

Social media’s popularity within the legal profession has gone from strength to strength over the past year. Embracing all things online, lawyers are signing up to Snapchat, taking on Twitter, familiarising themselves with Facebook and getting inspired on Instagram.

Clifford Chance’s latest recruitment video has a whiff of Suits about it. The short YouTube clip showcases the outfit’s plush Canary Wharf office as a well-spoken voiceover delivers a motivational speech that will leave you punching the air with enthusiasm.

While the video does concede life at the magic circle firm includes “late nights, hard work, early rises”, it does feature a plethora of perks including its swimming pool, squash court and gym. An honest account of life at the firm.

CMS Academy video series

CMS has produced a range of swish-looking informative clips to promote its self-styled ‘next generation’ vacation scheme. The CMS Academy video series — which has garnered thousands of views on Facebook — gives students a day-by-day breakdown of vac scheme life through a combination of interviews, montages, timelapses and that all-important funky music.

But that’s not the case over at Henderson Chambers. This London-based set has a dedicated pupillage website containing various videos and a detailed section on its specialisms, work experience opportunities and what it looks for in wannabe barristers.

Herbert Smith Freehills’ ‘Too Good to Miss’ competition

As part of its ‘Too Good to Miss’ competition, Herbert Smith Freehills invited more than 1,300 students from across the country to produce short videos explaining what makes them stand out from the crowd.

Last year’s winner, the University of Birmingham’s Laura Kendrick, entered a 60-second clip inspired by the ‘Visit California’ adverts. Kendrick’s prize? A jolly to Hong Kong and Australia where she hung out with lawyers at Herbert Smith Freehills’ international offices.

Shearman & Sterling’s Facebook livestreams

Shearman & Sterling is one of only a handful of law firms to embrace Facebook’s livestream feature. The US outfit’s informative clips — which are produced by its graduate recruitment team — cover hot topics including common vac scheme application mistakes and how to handle those dreaded assessment centres.

And they’re proving popular. The latest offering, ‘What training do you get on a training contract?’, has racked up more than 1,600 views.

Yes, that’s right, Lady Hale and her fellow justices are on Insta. The account — which went live last summer — is one of a number of initiatives by the Supreme Court to improve openness and transparency. Highlights include the court’s first trip outside London to Edinburgh and Hale playing ping-pong (no really).

Places to see in ( Los Cristianos - Spain ) Los Cristianos is a town in Spain situated on the south coast of the Canary Island of Tenerife. Located in the municipality of Arona between the cone of the mountain Chayofita and the greater mountain Guaza. Los Cristianos centre is around the Los Cristianos bay, but is rapidly expanding inland with modern development. Los Cristianos is a popular tourist resort and includes a ferry port. Los Cristianos has a history that predates the tourist boom of the 1970s and 1980s. For many years this holiday hub was a quiet fishing village and evidence of its humble origins can still be seen in the typical Canarian architecture of the older buildings. Nowadays however, Los Cristianos offers a holiday experience, with two sandy beaches, a multitude of bars and restaurants and its year round sunny climate. There is a wealth of accommodation to suit all budgets, including hotels, self-catering apartments and timeshare resorts. There is also a wealth of excursions focused around Los Cristianos busy port including dolphin and whale watching as well as game fishing trips and party cruises. The origins of tourism in Los Cristianos lie with a Swedish man, Bengt Rylander (known locally as Don Benito), who came to Los Cristianos in 1956 suffering from multiple sclerosis, hoping the warm climate and clean air would help ease his ailments. He convalesced well and spread the word of the mild and sunny climate he had discovered to his friends in Sweden and, since he was formerly a writer and TV commentator, word spread quickly. In 1957 he was joined by several friends who suffered from poliomyelitis and rheumatic diseases. So the origins of tourism in Los Cristianos during the late 1950s and early 1960s are as a resort for ailing & convalescent Swedes. These unlikely pioneers have left their mark on the town, with the main high-street in Los Cristianos known as “Avenida de Suecia” (Avenue of Sweden) and the “Casa Sueca”, now a Swedish Lutheran Church, located on the seafront. Tourism was not limited to the Swedes, growing numbers of visitors from other European countries. The 1960s saw the construction of the first large buildings in Los Cristianos to house the growing number of tourists, these included Cristianmar, Rosamar and the four-star Oasis Moreque Hotel. The steady number of disabled Swedish visitors also led to the opening of the Vintersol public rehabilitation clinic in 1965. Some old photos of Los Cristianos in the early days can be seen in the Hotel Princesa Dacil close to the beach. There are many old photos from the late 1960s and early 1970s in construction on display. Whilst tourist numbers in Los Cristianos grew steadily in the 1960s and 1970s, it was only after the inauguration of the new International Airport in the south of Tenerife (Reina Sofía) in autumn 1978 that tourism really began to boom in the south of the island. A number of huge hotels and apartment blocks were built during the 1970s to house the growing number of tourists and workers, but it was in the 1980s when the town began to expand massively. As well as holiday makers, Los Cristianos began to attract a number of British expatriates who emigrated either permanently or semi-permanently to escape the cold British winters. As English is as widely spoken as Spanish, there are also a number of British owned bars, restaurants, shops and services aimed predominantly at the tourist sector. Los Cristianos is home to two popular beaches: The main beach (Playa de Los Cristianos) is a sandy beach sheltered by the Harbour and boasts a number of facilities including watersports, beach volley ball, showers and a children's play area. Las Vistas Beach is located in the next bay beyond the harbour and is man-made, protected by break-waters, it also boasts a number of facilities including watersports, showers and a tourist information site. In December 2008 the Los Cristianos promenade, which was originally constructed back in the seventies, was given a facelift. Winter holiday pic incoming! Here's a bunch of in-progress screencaps showing a little bit of my process!

This is the first time I've drawn Dagmar, so it was a bit of a process to figure out how I wanted her to look. You'll notice one of the in progress pics has a much thinner starting point, which is sort of how I picture Dagmar in her hyper-athletic, definitely-healthy-coping-mechanisms-what-are-you-talking-about phase. However, Dagmar no longer looks like that and hasn't for a little while now. Keeping that in mind and drawing on how I mapped out the chitin patterns for each of my Andorians, I also mapped out fat-layers for Dagmar for reference. Also, yes, I know the courting ring is one the wrong side, but guys. Guys. Hear me out: I've already started colouring this. I've come to far to fix it now.

More in-progress pics of the upcoming winter holiday pic! Dagmar is coming along splendidly, though Shral remains unfinished alongside the poinsettias and the lineart needs some touching up in a few places. I was a bit silly with the poinsettias - I could have drawn one or two and then just copy + paste-ed a bunch of them at different angles. Instead, I drew every single bit by hand. Like a maniac.
