Elizabeth Tracy Mae "Bethe" Wettlaufer (née Elizabeth Mae Parker; born June 10, 1967) is a convicted Canadian serial killer and former registered nurse who confessed to murdering eight senior citizens and attempting to murder six others in southwestern Ontario between 2007 and 2016. With a total of fourteen victims either killed or injured by her actions, she is described as one of the worst serial killers in Canadian history.

An inquiry into former nurse Elizabeth Wettlaufer’s serial killings has been drawing attention to the “agencies and groups that could have flagged her crimes.” Wettlaufer injected elderly care home patients with massive overdoses of insulin, but the poisonings went undetected because autopsies of her victims were not conducted even though the Ontario Coroner’s office had received tips about suspicious deaths at facilities where Wettlaufer worked.

Until 1995, every long-term care home death was investigated by coroners, but funding cuts resulted first in a 90% reduction in investigations for these deaths. Then, in 2013, the Ontario government scrapped funding for these investigations entirely in order to save $900,000.

The fallout of this failure to catch and apprehend Wettlaufer will end up costing the province more than the $900,000 it saved - the government is helping to fund legal representation for the families and nursing homes affected by Wettlaufer’s crimes and for various associations and regulatory bodies representing nurses.

Elizabeth Wettlaufer told a Woodstock, Ont., courtroom Monday that she was "extremely sorry" for killing eight nursing home patients, and then was sentenced to eight concurrent terms of 25 years to life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years.

Superior Court Justice Bruce Thomas called Wettlaufer a predator who was a "shadow of death" that passed over the elderly victims she was supposed to protect and care for when she was a nurse.

"She was far from an angel of mercy," he said. "Instead, she was a shadow of death that passed over [her victims]."
