Why does Renesmee have two e's at the end anyway. Esme only have one e

this is something that has always bothered me tbh.

I mean, technically, the “correct��� French spelling of the feminine name is “Esmée,” while “Esmé” is the masculine form. but US birth certificates don’t allow diacritical marks, so it makes sense that they dropped that. and the simpler “Esme” spelling has been more popular (“popular” here being an extremely relative term) for centuries, especially as the usage of “Esme” on males has dwindled to practically nothing.

so ok, suspending our disbelief enough to believe that a woman born in the american midwest in 1895 is named “Esme,” that spelling checks out. but then we get to...Renesmee. here are all of my in- and out-of-universe explanations for what could POSSIBLY have led to that spelling:

the extra “E” comes from the ending of Renee rather than Esme

Bella, despite being a disgusting heretic when it comes to making up dumb franken-names, is a purist when it comes to French spellings and wanted the Proper feminine suffix of Esmée

stethoscope mayer wiener didn’t think “Renesme” looked girly enough for her precious paragon of enfant terrible femininity and tacked on an extra E because that’s what mormons do, they make names Worse (or in this case, “still equally bad but now with an extra E”)

what makes me actually boil with rage is the way it’s framed as though jacob & the cullens have an even rivalry and like, he hates them just as much as they hate him, but like… jacob is a lower class kid who lives on the rez, the cullens live in a plantation home on private property. jacob calling alice a leech is an insult, but alice calling him a mongrel calls into power and privilege, ya know. like am i supposed to honestly think jake making blonde jokes to rosalie (which is certainly sexist and uncalled for) is on the same level as her serving him food in a dog dish? him seeing the cullens as bloodsuckers and murderers is just like, incorrect and unfair, but them seeing him as uncivilized and over-aggressive has implications deeply rooted in the oppression of his people

Alice eventually calms her down and is like "Btw, I voted against killing you."

I love to think that there are great, exaggerated family legends about Uncle Emmett in the McCarty family. That they're like oh yeah he went out hunting one day and never came back, but his brothers went looking for him and found some ripped clothing next to the carcass of the biggest bear they'd ever seen. A monster. He fought that thing to the death! The bear might have gotten him, but the bear died too. It was a draw, so it means he never lost a fight. He was badass. And 7ft tall. Built of solid muscle. All the girls loved him. He was your great-grandma's favorite. etc, etc.

One year Rosalie and Emmett show up at a McCarty family reunion. There are so many cousins and aunts and uncles no one really questions it, and they're listening to these stories and Emmett's just loving every second of it; they remember him and he's become this family legend, a tall tale, their very own Paul Bunyan or whatever

Meanwhile Rosalie is muttering in the back, "I'm happy for Emmett and all, but I killed that bear."
