As requested, here's how I trained myself to wash the dishes pretty much daily.

Dishes and laundry have always felt insurmountable to me. It's probably because they never end. I live alone and I don't have a dishwasher, so I have to do the dishes whether I like it or not. I would much, much rather watch YouTube than do chores, so here's how I get around that.

(It's long so I'll put it behind a cut.)

Disclaimer: What works for me might not work for you. We all have different lives and situations. Take what works for you and leave the rest.

Solution #1: Make it low commitment

Sometimes I look at the sink and think, "I have to wash all of these?? It's going to take FOREVER. I'll do it tomorrow."

On those days, I challenge myself to wash dishes for the length of one song. It doesn't matter how many dishes I wash, just that I wash them for as long as the song plays!

Sometimes the song will finish and I'll feel up to washing for just one more. Usually, I end up listening to three or four and clean the whole sink. But if the song ends and I want to go do something else, I'm allowed to.

Try working up to multiple times a day.

Make a playlist with songs that make you feel energized! I use anime OPs because they're loud and fun to sing to.

Be gentle with yourself. If you washed one cup, that's great! That's a clean cup! That's one more clean cup than you had one song ago.

You're taking care of yourself by doing this. Really, it's a great kindness you're doing yourself and your family by cleaning something! You deserve to be taken care of!

This method also works with putting away folded laundry. If you don't want to use music, set a timer. Work for 3 minutes and stop.

Solution #2: Gamify it

When I have a little more energy, the goal changes:

"Can I clear the sink before this song ends?"

"Can I wash all of these within three songs?"

"Can I wash this cup before the chorus?"

This technique really motivates me. I tend to focus and work efficiently since I'm trying to beat the song. If I don't make it, I usually give myself another song or two. It's rare that I stop until the sink is clear.

Whether you beat the song or not, you've washed a bunch of stuff, so you win either way!

This technique also works for putting sheets on the bed, dusting, taking the trash out ("can I get back before the song stops??"), etc. Timers can replace music here too.

Solution #3: Use a habit tracker

The above solutions got me to stop leaving dishes in the sink for three days, but I was still leaving them overnight. To train myself to wash the dishes every single day, I made it a nightly chore for a solid month.

I used a habit tracker so that I got to check it off every day! I love checklists, so this was terribly satisfying.

I've tried a slew of habit trackers and hate all of them except for this one by TheFor. It's simple, has color coding, supports habit-based goals (like dish washing 7 days a week, or sweeping the deck once a week), and displays an overview so that you can check if you missed any days! Free on the Apple and Play stores. This isn't sponsored; I'm just a fan.

It took a month for my new habit to form, but it did! I'll now go wash the dishes when I see them in the sink, although I still use the first two solutions to keep it from feeling like a chore again.

Dish gloves will save your hands! Get a pair you like

I like a wooden dish brush with a replaceable head

I think it helps to like the scent of your dish soap

Get big, easy-to-clean things out of the way first. They take up a huge amount of room in the sink and make the situation look worse than it really is. Think colanders, cookie sheets, the pot you only boiled water in.

Wash things in categories. For example, I like to wash all of the mugs at once. It seems to go faster that way.

Leave the hardest-to-clean stuff for last so it can soak.

Paring down my mug collection sincerely helped the mug overload. Maybe put spares in a drawer for a while.

When in doubt, make everything into an itemized list (topics, timelines, organizing by subtopic, key facts/people/dates surrounding a significant event, concept, theory, or ideology, cause and effect, problem and solution, etc.)

Use real-life analogies and applications as often as possible to retain information (e.g. to remember acronyms, propositions through the "box" metaphor, etc.)

Reframe long-winded information into an ongoing narrative. Humans are better at retelling stories than retaining/regurgitating a laundry list of facts or statistics

Organize your study sessions to each focus on one main topic, concept, or chapter

Create a timeline for all your assignments. Plan in advance to work on projects in milestones rather than all at once

Utilize time-blocking to pace yourself through the information (e.g. devote 30 minutes to one task or an hour to studying a specific concept; take a fully unplugged break before resuming work or another study session). Use a countdown timer if you think it would be helpful for you – everyone is different

Prioritize rest, even if it sounds counterintuitive at first. You're most productive and focused when your mind is well-rested enough to achieve and maintain peak performance. HOW TO FOCUS DURING EXAM WEEK

It’s midterm season and we all know that we need those marks but sometimes we cannot focus. These tips are life SAVERS i always do them, so perfect.

1. Change your environment. If you’ve been on your desk since the afternoon and can’t focus… babes please change your location. Most of us study late at night or really early morning so the library isn’t the easiest access but i love to leave my room and go to the kitchen table or the living room coffee table. Sometimes even working on the floor is insanely efficient and helpful.

2. Turn off your shuffle playlist. Music works differently for each person and i understand that you want to make studying fun but during exams? drop it. OR this doesn’t work for everyone i’m highly aware but it works the best for me, i put a song on repeat (best one is Candy by Nct Dream). 4. Do another activity. When i say this I don’t mean go scroll through wherever. I mean it go do something that doesn’t require your brain to think or obtain information - brain overload and you’ll forget everything you just studied. Clean your room, eat a snack, clean your desk, fold your laundry, go see what your parents are doing.

5. Take a nap, rest, sleep!!!. Even though we sleep close to 8 hours we still get exhausted, now imagine those who barely sleep. When you just cannot stay awake any longer you should just go to sleep or take a nap. Its the best solution if none of them worked.

My washing machine is broken. I tried some Google help but didn't find a viable solution. So I called for service.

72 hours just to get a call back! Ugh. I like to do laundry frequently. I'm definitely not one to let it pile up for a long time.

The only laundromat close to home charges $2.75 per load. I just put 22 quarters in the little slots. The price and inconvenience is killing me.

However, as I wipe away my tears while thinking of how many times I might have to do this before my washer is fixed and the looming repair bill, I know in the future I'm saving money each time I go to my basement to wash at home.

Once I left college I hoped to avoid laundromats forever. Actually, this isn't awful. Google said 1:00 PM was the slowest time here, and that was correct. Only two other people are present and there are many open machines.

Rune REALLY hates grading papers

Brace yourself, it's that time again. I have to finish these today so I can return them tomorrow. block the tag runehatesgradingpapers if you don't want to see me struggling through a substantial part of a profession I've chosen.

At least I've had a mental breakthrough and realized that part of why I hate grading papers so much is that

a) I much prefer creating papers (and projects and worksheets)

b) I can work more efficiently if I have already created the exams or tests and that stress is taken care of

c) I hate leaving things to the last minute (thank you ADHD. I genuinely hate it. I'm at a point where I don't have to delay making the exams but instead grading them takes to the very last possible day

d) and that was the realization: Creating the exam is work that comes easy to me and is easily shared - 10 exams that have been written this term were created by me (wait, I forgot a bunch, it's closer to 20). I have saved others hours of work. BUUUUUT....no one can take over grading. I can't ask someone else to take care of it. (No really, it's illegal. I can't have someone else grade tests for my classes). I can never get something in turn from others that is equally helpful. I have colleagues who told me they'd rather grade 10 papers than create one test. I'm the opposite - I'd happily create 10 tests before grading one. Creating is a task than can be shared but not grading. And I hate that I'm being left alone with it, that no one can take this burden from me.

e) and it's paired with one of my character flaws: placing high expectations on others. Others doing less than what I expect actually stresses me out to no end. I often feel like I can't rely on others, in this case my colleagues on a professional level. I wouldn't leave creating a test for a Friday lesson until Thursday evening. I wouldn't, when trying to find a suitable text, always pick a schoolbook from a different publisher and copy that text regardless if it fits the length, difficulty or topic - just because that one has a solution sheet. Intellectually I know that reinventing the wheel is pointless, we all have demands on our time and good enough is enough in most cases. I suspect it's a leftover from a childhood where only excellence would get me noticed at all and anything less was never good enough. It's the question of "why are you allowed to get away with it and I'm not?" Which, places an unfair burden on others. No one has to live by my standards. It's the "It has to be perfect. To make up for the fact that it's me." thing.

And guess what? I've successfulyl stopped myself from working for another 20 minutes. I really would do anything than grading papers. I think it's time to hang up the laundry. I'm going to do that and then try another way to force myself to work.
