so i was watching TDW last night and i have decided that there is actually a subtle but distinctive empire-as-consumption motif going on. (parasitism, predation, cannibalism, vampirism... but whatever form it takes, people are getting eaten!)

odin compares jane to a goat at a banquet table. and the dissonance there is not merely that a goat can't share the feast - it's that a goat should be PART of the feast. odin is not just calling jane an animal here. consciously or not, he's calling her prey.

odin declares his intention to fight "to the last drop of asgardian blood". by forcing other people to take part in his own quest for vengeance (and perhaps a glorious death of his own), he a) treats them as mere extensions of himself and b) destroys them for his own benefit. which is also how eating works. you take something into yourself and make it disappear.

two major power sources (the aether and the kursed) are both presented as parasitic forces that will ultimately consume their wielder.

two of the dark elves' weapons (the aether and their antimatter(?) bombs) seem to work by annihilating or "consuming" the enemy.

algrim/kurse/the kursed often kills people with weapons... but there are also times when he kills people with his bare hands. he just grabs them, and they turn grey and shrivel up, suddenly looking like they've been dead for centuries. it's as if he's draining their life force.

and i think that's why loki, too, turns grey when he dies. because asgard has consumed him!

like. not to mix my cannibal metaphors, but asgard swallowed loki (adoption, erasure of identity, general lack of agency). drained him dry (abuse and exploitation to breaking point). and spat him out (abandonment when he was no longer useful). he was a tool and he was food, the kind of food that empires run on.

Was at a restaurant recently where they'd converted both their bathrooms to gender neutral (nice) and as i was washing my hands a guy came out a stall and saw me & said, "Oh!!! my god!! Is this the ladies'?? 😨😨😨😨 I'm so sorry!!!!!!" and I was like "No, it's fine, it's gender neutral" and he goes ".......Oh. uh. Ok." And then walks straight out. without washing his hands.

going through the hades 2 stuff and im sorry but i just have to ramble a second because look at Hephaestus

he's not just a wheelchair user but also an amputee. an above knee amputee. wheelchair users are already next to nonexistant in video games but amputees exist in this really...disheartening? spot where they're pretty much just reduced to "person with a cybernetic limb" - it's always just somewhere from "just a cool visual design" to flat out "superpower". I can't think of a video game amputee that is actually disabled by their limb differences - I'm all for futuristic worlds where prosthetics and other disability aids are far advanced from what they are now, but that's not really what's implied by these designs. They're just... Cool designs that in no way reflect on the real-world experience of being an amputee.

Look at Hephaestus, though. Look at that prosthetic. Whilst stylised it very much looks like it functions like common mechanical knees - knee bends when thigh is lifted, knee straightens when thigh is lowered. He's a wheelchair user as well as a prosthetic user - every prosthetic user I know is also a wheelchair user as a prosthetic is not usable in every occasion and also cause exhaustion and pain if used constantly.

Whilst we can't see much of his wheelchair the position he's sat in and the wheels very much evoke active wheelchair to me - this carries on to very specifically the thickness of his arms. Whilst a lot of Hades designs are muscular Hephaestus has very noticeably thick arms - which makes sense, as active wheelchairs require a lot of arm strength.

Just overall this design is making me want to cry - he's not just an actual wheelchair user in a video game, he's a realistic depiction of an amputee, a disability usually brushed over in order to give a character a fun design quirk and nothing else. He's fat and he's hot and he's a realistic depiction of an above knee amputee. Oh my god. Oh my god?

whenever you and satoru have an argument, he holds your hand and he won’t let go until he’s certain you’re not mad anymore. you’re telling him off because he forgot to unpack the dishwasher again, and he knows that’s his fault and you have a right to be mad but he hates when you’re mad and even worse when you’re mad at him, so he does the first thing that comes to mind and laces your hands together. now you can’t leave and be mad at him alone, you have to be mad at him while he’s connected to you and satoru has learned that that far reduces the amount of time you spend mad at him. getting upset because he led you two in the wrong direction? holding hands until you’ve cooled down. upset with him for being reckless mid-fight? he drops his infinity just to be close to you, holds your hand and tells you the curse can wait, he needs your forgiveness more. mad at him because he forgot something important on his way home? you’re holding hands until you forgive him—which could be all the way until you go to bed, or dragging you by your connected hands with him to the store to pick up what was forgotten. you get irritated with him in public? he’s quick to hold your hands and beg for kisses. sometimes the first years see you steaming and satoru following you like a lovesick puppy, his leash being your laced fingers and megumi just sighs and explain to yuuji and nobara that, “they’re fighting. this is their get along tactic, just leave them be.”

i think it's cute til it's not. til you're at a bar, drunk, and he shows up and takes you home. you wake up in a bed that smells of gunpowder and carbolic soap, in a shirt 3x your size and a pair of oversized sweats. when you check your phone, your friend's text reads, your husband is a scary man.
