CDrama Year in Review 2023
I'm still very much a CDrama beginner--I just started watching them in the summer of 2022--but since this is the first year I got into them in earnest, I figured I might as well do a year in review a la @dangermousie (whose lists I have found incredibly helpful in deciding which CDramas I really, really need to go back and watch as part of my CDrama education--so thank you!). So, without further adieu, here is my ranking of 2023 CDramas, in order of least enjoyed to most enjoyed*.
(See also: KDrama Year in Review 2023)
*Disclaimer: *not* a measure of objective quality
10. Royal Rumours: This drama was not great? Meng Zi Yi and Jeremy Tsui were fun, but the story started out messy and got messier. For some reason I still finished it, I think because I had a lingering cold and it was all my brain could handle at the time *shrug*
9. Gone with the Rain: I actually really enjoyed this one! The pacing was inconsistent, but Zhang Nan was fun as the irreverent Mo Xi, and we love a grizzled general. Special shout to the teacher who was not actually evil, just a sad lesbian whose gf disappeared on her
8. Love You Seven Times: Intriguing concept, not a strong enough FL to carry it through. The reincarnation stuff really worked for me at first, especially in their first mortal tribulation (as people, not CGI animals), but I got tired of it pretty quickly. I admit, the gifs of Ding Yu Xi as a sexy cat demon *did* pull me back in, but not enough for me to actually finish the thing, alas
7. Destined/Chang Feng Du: Started out really strong, and then stalled out on me. I think I only got up to about episode 22 or so, after their epic desert crossing and new start in a new state--they lost all narrative momentum for me there. I stopped watching and then just...didn't start again. I do, however, remain a big Bai Jing Ting fan, and will be keeping on eye out for whatever he does next
6. Hidden Love: (Contemporary) Age gap romances are hit or miss for me, but Zhao Lu Si absolutely stole/carried the show for me in this one. Although more fun imo when the main couple are in the the will-they-won't-they phase than in the family melodrama after they get together, still the only contemporary CDrama to get me to give it a go this year--and I'm glad I did
5. My Journey to You: Featuring my favorite murder girlies Esther Yu as Yun Wei Shan and Lu Yu Xiao as Shanguan Qian! Gorgeous costumes and sets, sweeping cinematography, and plot that kept me on the edge of my seat. Full disclosure, I have not actually watched the last two episodes because I got busy and then saw weird chatter about them, so I have no comment on the allegedly weird ending
4. Till the End of the Moon: Look, I know the ending wasn't ideal, but for the majority of its run, this drama owned my entire soul. It also introduced me to Bai Lu as Li Su Su, who inspired my first actual tumblr post (that wasn't a reblog) because I was so obsessed with her. And everyone knows that Tantai Jin is the CDrama ML of the year. 10/10, no regrets at letting it take over my life (and the OST my Spotify) from April to May of this year
3. The Story of Kunning Palace: More Bai Lu is always a good thing, and she's extra fun here as the transmigrated former evil empress and totally-over-your-nonsense Xiang Xue Ning here. The reverse haremness of it all totally shows why Bai Lu is the chemistry queen, especially with the princess (Liu Xie Ning) and cranky, morally grey, would-fail-gym-class strategist Xie Wie (Zhang Ling He). So glad this drama made it out of the CDrama vault and didn't languish indefinitely in censorship hell
2. A Journey to Love: Finished this one two days ago as of this writing and am still not normal about it. Ren Ruyi (Liu Shi Shi) and Ning Yuan Zhou (Liu Yu Ning) lead an exceptionally strong ensemble cast in this wuxia that explores the complicated relationships between love, duty, loyalty, loneliness, and companionship. Ruyi and Yuan Zhou are far and away one of my fave OTPs of the year, but just as compelling are the relationships between friends/brothers/fellow assassins Yu Shisan, Yuan Lu (ugh my heart), Qian Zhou, and Sun Lang. This drama definitely has one of the strongest ensemble casts of the year. And the character growth of Yang Ying from little princess abandoned in the cold palace to who she becomes by the end will stick with me for a long time. Plus another 10/10 OST!
1. Lost You Forever S1: I'm not normally a reverse harem girl, but the longing, loss, and hard resolve portrayed to perfection by Yang Zi as Xiao Yao really did it for me here. This whole drama struck an emotional chord for me, and where TTEOTM consumed my soul, LYF took over my heart. Xiao Yao's relationships with her power hungry, overprotective cousin Cang Xuan; hot snake demon Xiang Liu/playboy archery shufu Feng Feng Bei; and perfectly devoted Tushan Jing are all equally compelling to me, and while I may know who she ends up with in the end, who I *think* she should be with changes based on who's on screen at any given time. And A'Nian, my favorite bratty princess who really just needs some strong parenting, holds a special place in my heart. I know we may never get S2, and even if we do, censorship means it probably won't be what the drama makers are capable of, but I'm so glad for this little piece of absolute perfection. And, again, a top notch OST!
Fave Drama: Lost You Forever, by just a hair over A Journey to Love. See above.
Least Fave Drama: Royal Rumours--truly why did I finish this, what was past me thinking
Biggest Disappointment: 2023 is also the year I read Dreamer in the Spring Boudoir, my very first CNovel! But then I didn't even bother checking out its adaptation, Romance of a Twin Flower, because it got rid of everything that made the novel such an addicting read, including a brilliant, strategic, ice cold FL and an ML who actually kind of sucked at the beginning, only to grow on you very, very slowly over time. I'm grateful that the chatter around the drama is what brought the novel to my attention, but other than that, hard pass.
Favorite Male Character: Lots of good ones this year, but I'm gonna go with Cang Xuan (Zhang Wan Yi) from Lost You Forever. The conflict he faces between getting enough power to protect the people he loves the most and that power making him incompatible with those loved ones is so compelling, and his yearning for Xiao Yao even when she's right in front of him is wrenching. Full disclosure, I also just really love the sound of his voice
Tumblr media
Favorite Female Character: This could easily have gone to Li Susu (TTEOTM), Xiao Yao (LYF), or Ren Ruyi (AJTL), but I'm gonna go with Bai Lu's Xiang Xue Ning in The Story of Kunning Palace. Something I really loved about this character was just how jaded Xue Ning really was, even in her second go round at life. Yeah, she wants to make amends for the harm done in her previous rise to power, but that has hardly turned her into a good--or even pleasant--person. Instead, she's incredibly skeptical and still plays most things ice cold, especially with her family. As a bonus, we got plenty of Bai Lu's fantastic side eye as she basically had to do high school all over again when she gets called into the palace despite her very best efforts not to be.
Tumblr media
Favorite Ship: Ren Ruyi and Yuan Zhao from A Journey to Love have got to be it. They balance each other out so well, and over the course of the drama, learn to communicate effectively with each other whenever they have a problem. They also recognize that not all problems can be solved by ~love~, which makes their relationship even more compelling when they decide to prioritize each other in a way that respects what the other wants from life.
Tumblr media
Favorite Secondary Ship: Little princess Yang Ying and Yuan Lu absolutely broke stole my heart in A Journey to Love. Doomed love even more than the main OTP, these two's youthful romance was such much fun to watch, especially as they egged their respective mentors on in their own romance. Yang Ying's recognition that her first love did not have to be her only love is also something I always love to see, even as it broke my heart that (spoiler) she and Yuan Lu never really had a chance at an HEA. Their relationship really exemplified a key theme of this drama: that you should love the people you love while they're still with you because tomorrow is never promised.
Tumblr media
Non-2023 Dramas that I Watched: Two non-2023 dramas I watched that deserve a special shout out are Love and Redemption and The Sword and the Brocade. Love and Redemption prepared me to really appreciate the big swings that Till the End of the Moon took, and The Sword and the Brocade went a little way to filling the Story of Ming Lan shaped hole in my heart. The Sword and the Brocade also had absolutely searing critique of the concubine system, even as it featured one of the most genuinely good-hearted FLs I've seen. Would recommend both!
Most Looking Forward To: Yes, I'm a sucker and the censors (not to mention the characters) will probably break my heart, but I'm still crossing my fingers that Lost You Forever S2 will live up to the promise of part one. See above: still a CDrama beginner, have not yet had all the optimism knocked out of me. Sue me.

Tell me how I, the gal with terminal "can't stop thinking about Tai Sui" disease, read hundreds of thousands of words of Mo Du over the course of months, starting right after I finished Tai Sui, yet it took me until right now in this instant to put together the Fei Du->Zhou Ying parallel
Like. Here's the favored son of a man who is incredibly powerful and morally bankrupt. He hates his dad and would be quite happy to commit patricide, should he get the opportunity, but he doesn't directly do so because it wouldn't suit his schemes. He has spent his entire life since his teenage years painstakingly putting together the chess pieces necessary to both destroy his dad and unravel the truth of a grand unknowable conspiracy that has haunted his entire life. He's a genius and the way his mind works is utterly incomprehensible to everyone else in the world, even those who know and love him best. The right kind of placid smile from him can be the most terrifying thing anybody has ever seen. He is willing to use himself up and toss himself out completely if it is the means to the final end of his schemes.
It's just that with Fei Du, the whole point of him is that he's not nearly so terrible as he thinks he is. He's not a psychopath. He's not cruel, regardless of how much empathy he may or may not naturally have. He's just spectacularly traumatized by his childhood. And the presence of Luo Wenzhou in his life both saves him from spiraling down into his original epic self-destructive plot and allows him to access his buried human emotions.
Then, 5 years later, Priest came back to revisit some of the same ideas and turn absolutely all of them up to eleven. She wrote a man who doesn't just think differently from others, but who perceives the world so wildly differently from anyone else that his experience of existence is utterly incomprehensible to his peers. She wrote a patricidal prince who doesn't just want to destroy his father and his company, then tear out the truth of a criminal conspiracy, but rather wants to destroy his father and his entire country, then tear out the truth of the sky itself. She wrote a man who genuinely doesn't give a single damn about anyone other than himself and his tiny tiny selection of loved ones. Who would destroy the entire world in a fit of vengeance and who uses his own willingness to kill innocents as leverage against others. She wrote a man who plans to achieve his goals by way of epic self destruction and does exactly that, leaving the main character's loss of him as the central beating tragedy in the otherwise best possible ending.
She also wrote a story in which, when Zhou Ying's closest and most loved person realizes the dark and scheming truth of him, rather than saying "I can fix him; I don't think he's really so bad," he says "yeah, this is my cousin and he's a terrible menace who tries to destroy the world sometimes. I love him more than anything."
You can absolutely see how Priest's interest in similar ideas informed both characters. It's just that Fei Chengyu didn't succeed in raising his perfect little sociopath successor, but Emperor Taiming and the demons of the impassible sea absolutely succeeded in Jokerizing Prince Zhuang. They just couldn't possibly anticipate the kind of monster that the demon of the east sea would become.

Harry Du Bois Discovers The Concept Of Furries, A Short Passage By Me:
RADIO-COMPUTER: After browsing the contents of the *World Wide Web* for around half an hour, you stumble across a particularly unusual image.
FURRY ART: It is a painting rendered *Digitally* of a wolf, or maybe a hyena, standing on two legs, and using two human-like hands to grip onto things with. It appears to be wearing modern Human clothes, such as a tank top, shorts, bracelet, hat, and piercings. It is carrying a skateboard.
PERCEPTION [EASY:SUCCESS]: “It is rendered in a style distantly reminiscent of cartoons you enjoyed as a child. It is obvious that it took a lot of effort to draw something in this style.”
SHIVERS [CHALLENGING:SUCCESS]: “It is a rainy afternoon, somewhere in Martinese, a child is taken to the theater with his parents to see the new animated hit ‘The Wolf and The Warrior’.”
ELECTROCHEMISTRY [MEDIUM:SUCCESS]: “Forget about all of that, you see that ciggie in the wolf's mouth? That’s clearly a sign you need to go out there and *Smoke* some *Gokes*”
YOU: “Wait, what’s a"Goke "?"
ELECTROCHEMISTRY: “An interesting question. It would be a lot easier to solve with a cigarette in your mouth…”
YOU: *Refocus on the Furry Art*
ENCYCLOPEDIA [MEDIUM: FAILURE]: You have absolutely no memory of what this could possibly be. Nothing. You do remember that Contact Mike once scored a TKO during the first fifteen seconds of a boxing match, however.
CONCEPTUALIZATION [IMPOSSIBLE: FAILURE]: “Why? Why would anyone draw something like this?”
RHETORIC [CHALLENGING: SUCCESS]: “Mayhaps the artist is attempting to create an Ideological message through this work. It is stating that we, man, are no better beasts.”
YOU: “No, it probably isn’t that.”
AUTHORITY [MEDIUM: SUCCESS]: “It is the artists attempt at stating that they are the *Alpha Dog*. The head of their pack.”
YOU: No, it’s not that either.
ELECTROCHEMISTRY [EASY; SUCCESS]: “Don’t you see? The artist was horny for some Wolf Cock. Look at that bulge in the wolfs pants. Look at how toned those muscles are. The attention to detail the artist poured into the wolfs *Physique*. You have felt this feeling for someone before, but only for other Three-Dimensional people.”
YOU: “Oh god, is it that?”
EMPATHY [TRIVIAL: SUCCESS]: “You do not know the person who made this. It is impossible to say whether or not the artist *was* horny or not.”
VOLITION [CHALLENGING: SUCCESS]: “If you could talk to this artisan, you would certainly be able to figure this out. Until then, recenter yourself. Talk to Kim about it.”
YOU: *Turn and talk to Kim*
KIM KITSURAGI: The Lieutenant glances over at you on the Radio-Computer. His characteristic expression of placid calm is momentarily shaken by what is on the computer monitor.
EMPATHY [MEDIUM: SUCCESS]: He isn’t disgusted by what he sees you doing, merely surprised.
YOU: “Kim, do you know what this drawing means?”
KIM KITSURAGI: The Lieutenant adjusts his glasses “It appears that you are looking at Furry Art. It’s a… unique subculture of people mostly on the World Wide Web. These people enjoy anthropomorphic animals, like the ones in old cartoons.
YOU: “By enjoy do you mean, like, in a sex way?”
ESPIRIT DU CORPS: “This man you are talking to would take a bullet for you. He would die for you. He would *kill* for you. You are the black to his white, the ying to his yang. You complete each other. But the Lieutenant would rather drag his balls through glass than have this conversation with you.”
KIM KITSURAGI: He sighs “I personally do not, but I know there are members of the community that do, yes.”
REACTION SPEED [IMPOSSIBLE: SUCCESS]: “Wait! Did you hear that? The way he’s phrased that response, it’s as if he’s implied that he’s a furry.”
YOU: “What do you mean ‘you personally do not’? Are you implying you are a furry?”
KIM KITSURAGI: He stands there, unable to speak for a moment.
EMPATHY [TRIVIAL: SUCCESS]: “He’s thinking ‘Dear god, the human can opener’s gotten to me too.’”
KIM KITSURAGI: “Yes…I am in the Furry subculture. I…enjoy thinking of myself as a cat.”
CONCEPTUALIZATION [EASY: SUCCESS]: “A cat; lithe, sophisticated, agile. The perfect creature to represent our lieutenant.”
AUTHORITY [MEDIUM: SUCCESS]: “He is handling this well, despite everything. A graceful surrender if there ever was one.”
KIM KITSURAGI: “I fail to see what this has to do with the case at hand. It’s better if we keep moving and don’t mention this to anyone again.”
SUGGESTION [VERY EASY: SUCCESS]: That’s his professional way of saying “Take my secret to the grave, please”.
YOU: “One more thing, Kim, am *I* a furry?”
KIM KITSURAGI: The lieutenant looks you up and down “You will have to be the judge of that yourself, I suppose.”
THOUGHT GAINED: THE FURRIES ARE AT HOME IN THE MIRROR

Redesigning UgiGiugi's oc
Alright I'm in the mood to make some new twst ocs, but I also wanted to redesign some ocs at the same time. So I decided to redesign Ugigiugi's ocs. After all she did trace the art to make them and it's not like she's coming back anytime soon. However I don't which one to redesign so I'll leave a poll for you guys to decided which ones I should redesign. I'm only picking out of four of them since some of the ocs I don't really care about tbh. And I just genuinely don't know what to do with those designs. So it's just four options to choose from.
Will I do more? Idk.

I don't know if anyone else has a different theory, but the series would go really differently if Boboiboy wasn't the first one to discover Ochobot
Like granted, yes obviously it would be different, but how different? Well, I have a theory, I'm not sure if it's disproven yet or not, but I have a theory.
The 2nd Movie tells us that BBB's elemental powers are not originally his, right? Yaya, Ying, and Fang are powers Ochobot granted too, but they're never really explained, it just shows as something that suits each character.
My theory is that Ochobot doesn't really give powers, but rather, gives the watch, the watch takes a part of the user, and "crystalizes" as a power. In other words, he doesn't choose to give powers, but the power morphs itself according to the user.
So BBB only happened to get his elemental powers from the fact that he's the first to meet Ochobot. My other theory that's related to this one is that his actual powers are basic self-splitting, not Elemental powers unlike what we've believed. Ochobot simply gave him those because he was the first to meet Ochobot. Why else does Retak'ka never even tries to split himself? It's just not a power that comes from the elementals, but a power unique to Boboiboy himself.
With this too, it makes sense why no other elemental user has known about fusion. It's not even possible for them. They can't split themselves, so they can't combine themselves either. To analogize it:
Imagine water. Water represents an elemental user. Now imagine rocks, each a different colour. Each rock represents the elemental powers themselves. When a user uses an elemental power, you throw a rock in, and you freeze the water. Even if you try to throw another rock in, it wont work, because the water is frozen.
Meanwhile, Bobooboy has the power to basically summon another cup, and put water and rocks in each, then freeze. So even after freezing, you can take one of the blocks of ice, dump them in with the other, and boom. Fusion.
So if Ochobot saw Adu-du first instead of BBB, well. He wouldn't get the split thing BBB's famous for but he almost definitely would get the Elementals. I just think Boboiboy never split himself for more than the amount of elementals he has because he needs to associate something with each split to work and he already associates the split thing with elemental powers too much for him to try without it.

I've finally watched Link Click s2 and Yingdu arc. I won't talk about the actual writing and foreshadowing of the show since there are a lot of people already on the topic. I personally enjoyed it and I'm in for the ride. I'll instead give my thoughts on specific details of the show that caught my eye.
More under the cut
First off, something I thought was general knowledge but apparently isn't. The Chinese name for the show, ShiGuangDaiLiRen, is a pun. Much like any Chinese/Japanese series, all names are puns. Cxs means (Cheng) Process (Xiao Shi) Hour. Lg means (Lu) Land (Guang) Light, and don't take my word for this, but I think this is a double pun. Lu(land) sounds the same as Lu(path), making his name "Path light" as in literally lighting the way. Of course I could be wrong because although Lu(path) is not a common Chinese surname, if the creators had wanted to call him Path Light they totally could have.
ShiGuang, the first part of the title and the ship name of the MCs means "time", but not just any time, it's usually used in a positive context, like the times that you appreciate, or moments to treasure. DaiLiRen, the second part of the title means emissaries or agents. So the title means "(Treasured) Time agents", and for the shippers out there it can literally mean "ShiGuang agents"
Moving on. I'll always love the voice actors they do an amazing work. Chinese voice actors have really stepped up their game these past few years. The characters seem alive and the delivery of some lines is hilarious! I also appreciate how each character's dialogue and voice gives them life. Cxs speaks more informal and youthful (Sha' instead of shenme, using geme'r as in bro, general slang), Lg always uses serious dialogue. One of the villains (Xiao Ma obv) spoke in dialect and although the racism in China is inevitable and clearly appears in the show, it's still a bit of representation and I actually liked him and I thought he was quite funny and a bit sympathetic.
Shout out to Wang Juan, she only did a little but I appreciated her just existing. Western shows are used to including these types of representation ("strong female characters", girls with short hair, women in male dominated fields) so we kinda take them for granted at this point, but I have to give props to the writers because they absolutely didn't need to make a character like Wang Juan but they did.
Link Click in general is quite good in that sense. It's not based on an existing novel (as far as I know) and it's not danmei or bl (who are genres more notable for boundary breaking) but Cxs has semi long hair in a pony tail, the two noodle girls in s1 were obviously together, the women are well written (although the spotlight still always falls on the men) and in no point are the girls inferior to the men in combat. It's little things that maybe aren't groundbreaking for a lot of people, but the teens and maybe some children (the show is also meant for them because of the PSAs that sometimes appear) are seeing representation that is rare in chinese cartoons.
Speaking of the PSAs and the ads, I don't know why they're all so funny to me, just by existing. Especially the one about domestic violence. Obviously we know it's bad, and the show clearly frames it as a horrible thing, but they HAVE to add it, it's just a thing that they have to do. In a sense our MCs are influencers and they just, have the responsibility to say it's bad, and ask the viewers to fight for a world without domestic violence. The same goes for the Yingdu arc. They have to say the "everything is a work of fiction" or whatever, even though it's obvious given that Yingdu doesn't exist in real life (Obv London since Ying is for England and Du is for capital but still), and they have to say "don't attempt to carry out any of the reprehensible actions shown" like the classic "don't try this at home"
Moving on to Yingdu. I'll be honest I didn't like the opening song, the rhymes feel flat and the lyrics just aren't it. It feels like someone's best attempt at writing an English song when they haven't really mastered English. It's not bad at all, it's just not for me.
I was shocked at the hour long opening movie! I was actually so happy Link Click is getting that type of treatment. Well I'm happy about it existing in general. I'm used to Chinese shows popping out the first season of something promising but also setting up to be very long and just, never continuing. But after MDZS basically revolutionised the industry in 2018 and got western attention, Chinese animation has gotten so much better, the production is more organised, everything is more polished, voice actors are getting the recognition they deserve and it makes me very happy!
The art style has changed a little bit, mostly the faces, the backgrounds too. I don't think I'll be able to hold Chinese animation up to western or even Japanese standards in this decade still, it's currently just not possible, so I won't even try. I appreciate the characters moving normally, they do feel alive and have little movements that aren't 100% relevant to the story but give them characterization, and that's already so good! That wasn't too present in s1, but in s2 I really scrutinized the first few episodes because usually second seasons have a drop in quality, but I was pleasantly surprised to see those little character animations.
A thing that I've always liked about Link Click is how they portray subtle details of Chinese life, like your parents showing care through food, a spice native to a certain village, a mother's silent support in a rural area... All small things that just remind you this is (fantasy) China and for the Chinese viewers seems relatable or even nostalgic if they're overseas. Foreign viewers get a little bit of what (fantasy) china is like, mostly for young, urban middle class people though. It's like when people watch anime and learn a bit about Japan, people watch donghuas and have to learn a little bit about China, it's only fair.
In the Yingdu arc I really loved the moment when LiuXiao stopped the robber. I just really liked it because Cxs (not Lg, Lg is living in another dimension rn) is your typical Chinese tourist, he speaks limited English he has no idea wtf is happening, and he's so happy to meet another Chinese person. Just meeting someone who speaks a language he understands, and has just helped him. He says that even overseas it's best to rely on compatriots, and it's really true. People who travel somewhere else be it for tourism or actually emigrating will always be happy to meet someone they "know", and immigrants usually first find their footing among compatriots.
On that note, I also appreciate the detail of Yingdu actually being shown to be a different place. The people don't automatically speak Chinese for the Chinese viewers to understand, they all speak (a very broken ch)english, and it really feels like we've moved location. Every time the MCs meet someone who speaks Chinese it's treated like a little gem. And then there's Vein, speaking chinglish and saying Nihao (hello) with an accent even though mfer knows mandarin.
SOMETHING I FORGOT. I just find it hilarious that the guns in this show never have the accurate amount of bullets. That gun Xiao ma pulled out shot at least 10 times. You can tell the average Chinese person has never seen a gun before. And the one Vein has? I don't know what type of gun that is but it sure doesn't look like it can shoot 8 times idk.
Overall I'm happy to have caught up to Link Click. I liked the first season but I don't know why it never hooked me, even though it ended on a huge cliffhanger. But now I'm hooked and pleasantly surprised by the general quality of the show

Guys I figured it out
The loustat reunion is scratching that itch I have for the exact thing happening in mdzs. Like we kinda get vulnerable Lan zhan via Lan Xichen sharing with Wei Wuxian about what happened in the get lost cave etc. And guanyin temple is a thing, BUT we never ACTUALLY get vulnerable confession Lan zhan and when we get confession Wei Wuxian it's very much cheery sincere Wei Wuxian. It might be OOC for Wangxian but I really really really really want vulnerable tear filled hearts cracked entirely open Wangxian. But I will say ☝️the not having of it, is also quite phenomenal BECAUSE IT MAKES ME WANT IT SO SO BAD
