Understanding Drone Warfare in Ukraine

Drone warfare is a complex and nuanced topic with drones used for information gathering, observation and direct attacks. The war in Ukraine has seen an explosion in drone use ranging from small commercial DJI Mavics to military grade drones like the Bayraktar TB-2. I'm joined by author and journalist David Hambling who has been tracking and writing about drone use in Ukraine since the Russian invasion in February 2022.

For the first time in history a sea drone took down a helicopter

On 31 December 2024, during the battle in the Black Sea near Cape Tarkhankut of temporarily occupied Crimea, Ukrainian special unit “Group 13” shot down a Russian Mi-8 helicopter by the use of R-73 “Sea Dragon” missile launched from a Magura V5 sea drone. Another helicopter was damaged but managed to return to base.
