Honestly, this episode really shows why Lucy feels the need to pretend to be a certain way all the time. It's so ingrained in her that she has to do it that she's proud of having an excellent poker face, not even realizing how worrying that is. When else has her mother decided that her privacy doesn't matter? Combined with Lucy's other character aspects, it creates a portrait of an incredibly dysfunctional household covered by a thin veneer of genteel upper crustness.
There are many explanations of why Mrs. Westenra decides to enter her daughter's bedroom in the middle of the night, and simply throw away all of the garlic flowers.
I know the doylist reasons behind Mrs. Westenra decision of throwing away her daughter's flowers. I know how the narrative needed more blood to oil the gears of the story. I know this was needed to wake up Van Helsing from his state of "don't ask because I won't tell".
But I just can't fathom why.
None of this would have happened if Dracula wasn't so offended that Lucy did not die when he drained her to the point of needing Arthur's blood. The fault lies on this monster who is enjoying this slow torture process because this poor young lady has people around that care about her. Dracula has been causing all of this.
And I still ask myself WHY.
The fault lies in Van Helsing? Absolutely, he thought that communication and explanation were not important enough while treating Lucy, and that decision smacked him in the face as he keeps losing time.
AND YET WHY, WHY THROW AWAY LUCY'S FLOWERS. THOSE WERE HERS.
It's not only the act of throwing away the flowers in the middle of the night while Lucy is sleeping, which is disregarding of Lucy's privacy. It's how smug Mrs. Westenra is after it, telling the two doctors who have been treating Lucy since the beginning.
Think about for a second! Jack and Van Helsing are established as Lucy's doctors. Both of them have been visiting her every day. Then, suddenly a bunch of strong smelling flowers appear in Lucy's room after they left. Yes both of them made the mistake of not telling anyone that the garlic flowers were medicine. However, Mrs. Westenra didn't even question what those were!
Think about the situation! WHO WOULD HAVE LEFT THESE FLOWERS IN LUCY'S ROOM. WHO IS VISTING LUCY FREQUENTLY ENOUGH TO LEAVE FLOWERS THAT SMELL SO STRONG. Jack is starting to lose hope already.
"What does it all mean? I am beginning to wonder if my long habit of life amongst the insane is beginning to tell upon my own brain."
Yet the only thing replaying in my mind is how happy Lucy felt yesterday. She woke up in the middle of the night to write about how happy she was because of the flowers, the care, the words, everything. Lucy even liked the smell of garlic! It was comforting! She was going to have her first time of good sleep in ages.
Those garlic flowers carefully put in all of her room, that beautiful flower wreath around her neck made by the doctor. Ripped away while Lucy was sleeping and vulnerable by a mother who thought that she could because those flowers are just in Lucy's room, so it means they are not important.
All of Lucy's flowers were thrown away. At least Ophelia got to keep hers.
Can this woman treat her only daughter like a person for once?
#^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^#puts the frustration and disgust of the whole situation into words#Dracula is the Villain. The Monster.#but Mrs. Westenra is the commonplace face of the intrusive and abusive family elder who decides their whims > everyone and everything else#mrs. westenra#lucy westenra#dracula#dracula daily#re: dracula

Am I just a delusional shipper or does this feel like it should have been a thing?
Spoilers for Gargoyles (1972) ahead.
"Go on, your voice pleases me."
"'The sin was not my own, but forced upon me by the incubus; who overnight did slip into my bedchamber and taunt and seduce me with demon's promises until I was as if on fire. He was of uncommon height and finely built. A devil's face of frightful beauty that did put me in a spell. I had no will of my own, but did let the incubus do his will until I was driven mad.'"
Those are actual lines out of the movie. I didn't paraphrase. At all. I played the scene where she was reading out of the book, and typed every word she said. This is a movie about demons who "sometimes take human women" who are trying to conquer the world. Also, in this movie, the gargoyles with wings are the breeders. This one says as much. He was basically the leader. His reaction to being told that he's lost is literally, "Not as long as there are two winged breeders."
Also, the way the gargoyle acts when he first sees Diana just SCREAMS "shipping fuel". If this were written in the modern day, they would have done it. You can't convince me otherwise. You know why I say that?
BECAUSE THE 90s DID IT!!!
I don't care that these two stories have nothing to do with one another. This is a really good comparison. And, even if it wasn't, I have plenty of fuel for this fire. (I don't even need my usual go-to of vampire movies to prove this point.)
Diana and The Gargoyle fit into two categories that I love and frequently ship. Hero/Villain (though I guess this is more damsel/villain) and Human/Monster. I'm going to give examples from both categories that I will die shipping. (They overlap quite a bit, actually.)
Jareth the Goblin King x Sarah Williams
Katara x Prince Zuko
Rey x Kylo Ren/Ben Solo
Vlad Dracula x Mina Murray/Mina Harker
Erik x Christine Daaé
Batman/Bruce Wayne x Catwoman/Selina Kyle
Elisa Esposito x The Amphibian Man
Catherine Chandler x Vincent
So, with all that context in mind,
DOES THIS REALLY LOOK LIKE THAT MUCH OF A STRETCH?!?!

I wish there were more books from a sad/angry monster's point of view like Grendel by John Gardner but every time I look for "books similar to grendel by john gardner" the lists are just a bunch of books I've already read and aren't the same as Grendel; Beowulf, The Epic of Gilgamesh, Sir Gawain & The Green Knight... Not the same... These are all heroes, show me the monster's point of view. Tell me about the agonies of Fafnir and Dracula and St George's dragon before they were murdered by the hero...
#textpost#I love a good monster. A good monster has at least a few sympathetic traits to it#Fafnir was turned into a dragon by greed and is considered evil now for it even tho for most of his story he's just lazing around treasure#Dracula is a villain because of the connection to Satan and because he needs blood to survive. Are leeches and wolves evil too?#St George's dragon did extort a village for treasure/animals and then human sacrifices and I will admit that one is actually pretty bad lol#But also the village was entirely ok with the human sacrifice compromise until a member of royalty was chosen by the dragon for sacrifice#Then suddenly it's like oh ok so this is bad now that it's someone with money huh??#Obviously there's still killing and actually bad stuff in most cases that keeps the monster from being entirely irredeemable#but it always makes me wonder that if the circumstances were different#If the monster found a way to survive without hurting humans would it still be considered a monster?

@beatingheart-bride
Randall's breath hitched at the touch of her Cupid's-bow lips against his bony hands, to say nothing of his heart fluttering at the notion that his presence made his bride's life, topsy-turvy though it was now, a little easier. It was all he could hope for; that after everything she'd been through (then and now), he could be a light for her, just as she'd been one for him.
Wanting to lighten the mood, to move away from this topic (even though she'd reassured him that she wasn't upset, he still didn't want to press it), he instead chose to ask her, "Tell me, darling, tell me about some of your happier memories from...the future. You've told me about all the parties Dorian threw, but what did we do together?"
Although the idea of living in an attic, the very place their lives came to an end, sounded a bit morbid to him (though, perhaps, ghosts had a different perspective on that sort of thing?), he loved what Emily had told him so far, how cozy they made their little home together, turning it from a mere storeroom to a place all their own, adding their own personal touches to it. It was an unusual place to call home, sure, but it was theirs, and all she'd told him about it, it sounded really quite lovely-it sounded like they made some wonderful memories there.
#((i'll have to give it a listen sometime!))#((i could easily see it playing a part in your affection for monsters-after all; you can hardly get more monstrous))#((than the wicked witch; and yet the show gives her depth; a history; and you feel for her!))#((it's a show that makes you feel sympathetic for a legendary villain; and that's no small feat!))#((i know as a kid when my parents sat me down to the universal monsters; they made a point))#((of mentioning how sympathetic they were-how the wolf-man was a good man under a curse))#((who can't control himself as a wolf; how the frankenstein monster didn't ask to be made))#((and is very very lonely as a result; how the gill-man is the last of his kind and longs for love))#((and so on! it made me very sympathetic to their plight! they were all immensely sympathetic))#((and they still are; which i think makes them stand out against a lot of other horror villains!))#((except for dracula-i can be sympathetic to all the others except him; he's just a monster through and through))#((with no shades of grey to be found!))#outofhatboxes#beatingheart-bride#V:Days of Future Past

How the HELL am I reading a comic where they are putting King Arthur against DRACULA of all people, AND IT IS STILL THE EXACT SAME OLD STORY?!
People should be banned from using the Grail Quest and the Arthur/Lancelot/Guinevere love triangle in their stories until, I don’t know, they have completed a quiz proving that they actually know other parts of the mythos too, or something.
#nothing against retellings#BUT IT'S ALWAYS THE EXACT SAME THING!!#I'm tired!!!#This is the Arthurian legend!!#you could have your pick from SO MANY stories!!#Especially if you bring in a time travelling Dracula for some reason#like this comic should be UNHINGED#IT IS NOT#it just feels boring and shallow#as if the author had based everyone on the most basic pop culture image of themselves#and not even tried to give their characters depth#Arthur is looking for the Grail#because that's what Arthur does#Morgana and Mordred are powerhungry cartoon villains plotting Arthur's death#because that's what Morgan and Mordred do#Dracula is a monster and murders people#Lancelot and Guinevere are about to start having an affair...#you get the picture#It's. It's frikking DRACULA.#IN CAMELOT#AND YOU STILL DIDN'T MANAGE TO MAKE IT ORIGINAL IN SOME WAY?!??!#Arthurian legend#Dracula vs King Arthur#comic books#way to common problem with Arthurian adaptations unfortunately#Writers do some fucking research challenge

I wrote a book!
The Vampyres is the happy horrifying accident born of feverish scribbling in the wake of Dracula season* (*inhaling Dracula Daily and Re: Dracula at the same time May thru November). It features a number of familiar villainous faces from classic supernatural lit, though not everyone is wearing their original name anymore. The story takes place in the 21st century and you can only hold onto those sentimental titles so long in the mayfly mortal world before you start drawing attention.
Not that swapping out pseudonyms has done anything to thwart the new shadow looming over the revenant community…
Free Preview Chapters (If You Want a Sneak Peek)
All on my Substack here!
More info under the cut:
Description
Something is culling the undead.
Whether they imbibe blood, leech life, or traded mortality away to their devil of choice, the revenants of the world are disappearing. The Vampyre, a possessor of many names and collector of many lives, has been fretting over the phenomenon for some time.
A laughable fear, for he is one of those canny cadaverous few who made a deal for perpetual resurrection. The bitten may crumble, but the bargainer can rise from death after death. So he reminds himself. So he worries is no longer the case.
Not when the boyar in the Carpathians was one of the first to vanish. Still, the monster from the mountains may simply be in hiding, just as the rest of the bargainers must be. The Vampyre convinces himself of this for a single night……before the monster called Quinn Morse makes itself known.

i want hollywood to hate him a lot more. the last voyage of the demeter wasn't enough i need more adaptations that portray him as a cruel, cold-hearted sadist

OVERHATED CHARACTERS POLL: Count Dracula (Dracula)
Feel free to explain your position in the comments or tags, but any harassment, over-the-top fighting, or personal attacks will result in you being blocked. Do not attack real people, be they fans or creators, over fictional characters.
Mod note: Bear in mind, this is SPECIFICALLY for the book incarnation of the character.
#i do fall into the category of “love to hate” because dracula is a very good villain#Stoker's good at showing the reader how cruel and manipulative Dracula is#So I like Dracula in the sense that he's a well-written villain#But I'm sick to bits of Dracula being portrayed as a cool tragic sexy villain and yeah I'm talking to you Coppola#and say what you will about Last Voyage of the Demeter: their Dracula's a sadistic monster who delights in spreading fear and miser5#*misery#i have my issues with the film mind you. but i enjoyed seeing a Truly Evil Dracula#for fucking once

you know how you did bg3 types of yanderes, could you do that for castlevania? Like the trio and isaac, hector, dracula/lisa, carmilla, st. germain??
A/N: For reference, here is the one I did for BG3 villains, and here is the one I did for the BG3 Main Companions. Also, this is unedited as hell so if you see grammar mistakes, no you didn't.
Castlevania Characters as Yandere! Types:
Yandere! Trevor:
Defensive. Calucative. Hardened. Trevor’s seen far worse than you, from humans and monsters alike. He knows the terror and the cruelty that lurks out there. He wants to shield you from it all, for as long as possible. He has this overwhelming need to prevent what happened to his family from happening to you. Even then, he knows your innocence won’t last; it couldn’t possibly. So long as you’re tied to him, you will know hardship. So as much as he babies you, and refuses to grant you complete independence, he is also distant, and frequently unaffectionate. In his line of work, people don’t die of old age; neither of you will be in the other’s life forever. Just let him love you the way he needs, when he asks for it, please. Everything else is so difficult in his life, you don’t want to add to that. Make yourself into the one piece of his life that is easy. And enjoy the easy while it lasts.
Yandere! Sypha:
Confident. Feisty. Unyielding. Sypha is always sure of herself. Everything she does, she does with 100% effort and full intent- your relationship is no different. From the moment she sees you, she’s sure she likes you, and she’s certain you like her. Any behavior that suggests otherwise on your part must simply be beginning relationship nerves. After all, she is a scholar and a Speak Magician. Her infectious optimism seeps out of her every pore. Her love for you knows no bounds, and she will not hesitate to throw herself into danger to prove it. I mean, she can conjure fire and ice instantaneously in her own two hands! Who wouldn’t want to be her partner? Only some sort of complete and total asshole would try and turn her down, or worse, fight against her. She fights for what is right, and what is just. You wouldn’t fight against what’s just, would you?
Yandere! Alucard:
Intellectual. Sharp. Melancholic. Alucard is not a stranger to romance nor heartbreak. Losing the people closest to him has left him vulnerable, both emotionally and physically. Instead of processing his feelings, he bottles them up, until he can no longer bear their weight. He feels such pressure to remain composed, remain controlled, not animalistic, to go against the programming of half of his biology. At the same time, he is starving, desperate, and filled with an insatiable thirst for closeness. Such a complicated, disconsolate man, Alucard needs you to stay, more than anything. His life has been so lonely, and so hard; at times it feels like all he knows is loss and the cruel impossible whispers of desire. You need to stay. You need to choose him. He cannot take another heartbreak. It’s quite possible, given his role throughout history, that humanity wouldn’t survive another one of his heartbreaks either.
Yandere! Isaac:
Keen. Precise. Self-Righteous. Isaac has journeyed far on his quest for revenge, coming not only into a new land and new role but a new self as well. Gone is the former subservient, sacrificial lamb, who has risen into a stronger, wiser, seemingly benevolent king. Do not mistake this kindness for weakness, however. You must be either admirable or too kind-hearted to pose a genuine threat. Once you’ve caught his eye, prepare for an odd game of cat and mouse, you being the mouse of course. Isaac is not used to having friends, much less romantic companions. You must be patient as he learns the intricacies of your psyche. Surely, you must know he’s been analyzing it since you met? Be an honest, positive presence in his life, and he will keep you safe from all others who may do you harm. Treat him as the wise king he now sees himself as, and perhaps, he will ask you to be his queen.
Yandere! Hector:
Reclusive. Embittered. Suspicious. Hector has been forced to toughen up. Too late did he realize at the end of the road, that it is the people, not the zombies you command that can make or break a man. That is where you come in my dear. Following Lenore’s death, Hector’s purpose is up in the air, he is suddenly a puppet, free of its strings. He feels much wiser, but just as lonely. Hector cannot help but latch on to you, the first “normal” person to view him as human. He yearns for a simple quiet life, with a dog (a live one) and a partner to call his own. You’re perfectly plain, or perhaps, you’re just odd enough to make him look normal, and he relishes that. You have to understand that he can’t share much about his past. He can’t possibly tell you about his old life, no, no, no. He’s hiding it from you, hells, he’s hiding from it with you. He loves you dearly, he does. But he can’t trust you, not fully. A man with a history like his cannot truly trust anyone.
Yandere! Dracula/Lisa:
Nurturing. Captivated. Smothering. Dracula was not keen on humans before meeting Lisa; she bewitched him body and soul. And now the two of them have become enthralled by you. Dracula has learned the ‘other’ humans are not to be trusted, not with you, and certainly not with his wife. Lisa finds it unfortunate how she is no longer able to treat her former patients in Lupu, but she’s also incredibly thankful now that she has you to take care of! Ever the eager student, she still wants to learn so many things, and how wonderful of a practice dummy you are. Dracula is also eternally grateful that his wife will not be completely lonely; he knows how much helping her fellow humans means to her, and now that you’re here, Dracula no longer has to worry about keeping his wife (and by extension, you) to himself for eternity.
Yandere! Carmilla:
Prepared. Calculating. Cruel. Carmilla is a sadist at heart, there’s no denying it. She loves feeling the power she wields over all other people, humans, and vampires alike. For you to have caught her attention, surely you must be something special. Either you are particularly gifted in something she’s not (negotiations, necromancy, art, etc.) or you’re just so unbelievably precious, that she can’t help but want to steal you away for herself. She sees you as a possession, as a rare and beautiful gem, not a person. Even if she did ‘hear’ anything you had to say, she’d simply consider it further fodder to be used in manipulating you should it all come to that. She is not a woman who is denied, not by God, not by man, not by Dracula, and certainly not by you. Chin up, pet. Things could always be much worse. You could be thrown in the dungeons and left to rot. How lovely of Carmilla to instead treat you to more luxury than your kind could ever dare to deserve. For your continued safety, may I suggest showing a little gratitude? I mean it’s not like your life depends on it or anything. It does.
Yandere! St. Germain:
Wise. Inquisitive. Obsessive. St. Germain is a man who knows his mind. He knows a great deal about alchemy, and that alchemy, at the end of his days, will be his greatest work. That was of course, all before he met you. You opened up a whole side of him that he didn't know existed. Before you, his conquest was kings and courts; his acquaintances were mages and scholars! But now, in his effort to keep you from himself, you have become his conquest; his acquaintances are vampires and demons, all practitioners of dark magic. To him, it’s of little matter, so long as he can secure you, his one true love. To him, it’s the most important to have someone to share all his knowledge with, all that he’s achieved. To bask in the victory alone does not hold the same merit. He needs you at his side, he needs you to be invested in the great work. Without you, without your love, he fears he cannot achieve it. As such, he will do whatever it takes to get you by his side. And I do mean- whatever- it takes.
