I'm not joking -- I actually check IMDB every few days to make sure this is still real:
I mean, that's about as tailor-made for my entertainment as it can get. Not only are we getting a movie about this story, which I've been waiting for years for, but we're getting Offerman as President Arthur, Michael Shannon and the amazing Betty Gilpin as the Garfields, and Tom Wambsgans as Charles Guiteau! Matthew Macfadyen is certainly not the first person who I'd think of to play crazy-ass Guiteau, but I'm sure he'll be incredible because he's always great. Plus, Matt Ross is really good too -- as a director and as an actor -- so I'm glad to hear he's involved.
Please get made, "Death by Lightning".

Some people are still upset with D&D for killing off certain characters in Game of Thrones. In a new Netflix series, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss plan to dramatize the killing off of America's 20th president, James A. Garfield, who was famously "shot by a disappointed office seeker".
Netflix announced today that the next big project from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will be titled Death by Lightning and about the assassination of President James Garfield. Michael Shannon and Matthew Macfadyen both star, with Shannon as Garfield and Macfadyen portraying his assassin, Charles Guiteau. Which, we gotta say, is the reverse of who we thought would be playing whom—but we’re into it.
Netflix describes Death by Lightning as “a drama series that brings to life the epic and stranger-than-fiction true story of James Garfield, reluctant 20th president of the United States, and his greatest admirer Charles Guiteau—the man who would come to kill him.” It’s based on the book Destiny Of The Republic by Candice Millard.
Benioff and Weiss also have the weighty sci-fi series 3 Body Problem coming soon with Netflix, but they’re not writing or directing this new one. Mike Makowsky (Bad Education) will do the former and Matt Ross (Captain Fantastic) will be behind the camera.
James Garfield’s presidential term started in March 1881. Guiteau shot him in June, and he succumbed to his injuries an agonizing few months later, in September of that year. Guiteau pled temporary insanity, but was sentenced to death and executed the following year. The full story is complicated, involving spurned political dreams, medical malpractice, and maybe even a touch of neurosyphilis.
An error in the quoted article: Garfield was shot on July 2nd – not in June. He died on September 19th. Without mentioning spoilers, his death was rather excruciating.

The Death By Lightning casting was updated. Any thoughts on Shea Whigham as Conkling and Bradley Whitford as Blaine?
I'm a huge fan of both Shea Whigham and Bradley Whitford, so I'm all for them being involved even if I don't see either of them as Conkling and Blaine. I'm just glad that the series is being stretched out enough to include Roscoe Conkling and James G. Blaine. Also, Kate Chase Sprague and Blanche Bruce! If we're getting Kate Chase Sprague as a major character, that means it's probably going to get into her relationship with Conkling...and any story featuring more Roscoe Conkling is bound to be entertaining.
Also, is there a law that was passed that requires Michael Shannon and Shea Whigham to always be cast together? I'm not complaining. I like both actors. I'm just curious.

My father was Lightning McQueen (he looked human, but my paperwork and everything said the racecar was my dad), and Lightning was rumored to have killed someone. It was an unfounded rumor, not even a court case for him to have been charged with anything, but TMZ refused to let it go. On a race for charity, my dad won, but he ended up crashing and being on death's bed because of how bad it was. My existence was hidden, but when I shrieked, "Dad," and ran towards him, some man who had been celebrating grabbed me and strangled me. He gleefully said that McQueen would pay for the death that he was suspected of doing by having a dead child before he dies, but someone helped get him off of me before I could die.
