Space Shuttle Challenger races off the pad during STS-51F/Spacelab 2. July 29, 1985.
During Challenger's ascent to orbit, both of center engine's two high-pressure fuel turbopump turbine discharge temperature sensors failed, causing a shutdown of the engine. This was the only in-flight failure of an RS-25 engine. The failure of the engine resulted in the only Abort to Orbit of the Space Shuttle program. The ATO led to the Shuttle being in a lower-than-planned orbital altitude, but the Spacelab mission was still able to proceed.
The primary module aboard the Shuttle was the European Space Agency-developed Spacelab. The main mission of STS-51F was to verify performance of Spacelab systems and its interfacing with the Shuttle, with additional experiments covering life sciences, plasma physics, astronomy, high-energy astrophysics, solar physics, atmospheric physics, and technology research.
Tumblr media
The Plasma Diagnostics Package, at the end of the Remote Manipulator System, used to study natural plasma processes, orbiter-induced plasma processes, and beam plasma physics.
Perhaps the most publicized payload on STS-51F/Spacelab 2 was the Carbonated Beverage Dispenser Evaluation, which was an experiment in which both Coca-Cola and Pepsi tried to make their drinks available to astronauts using experimental dispensers. Ultimately, neither brand was the victor. Commander Fullerton remarked, "we had no desire to drain the cans."

STS-51F/Spacelab 2 spent 8 days on orbit, landing at Edwards Air Force Base, California on August 6, 1985.

The Radio Times magazine from the 22-28 July 2023 :)
Good Omens
The first series of Good Omens gamely, if sometimes patchily, adapted Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman’s 1990 novel of the same name, featuring a gang of wacky characters trying to stop the apocalypse. It was a decent success — but the real triumph of the series was the casting of Michael Sheen and David Tennant as Aziraphale and Crowley, an odd couple angel and demon secretly working together over centuries.
The onscreen partnership was such a success that Sheen and Tennant have become a veritable double act, mining their friendship for three series of lockdown sitcom Staged. And this second run of Good Omens wisely drops most of the side characters to focus on their dynamic, as the unlikely pair face another Armageddon, this time involving an amnesiac angel Gabriel (Jon Hamm). With Tennant and Sheen centre stage it’s sharper, tighter and funnier than series one, and just as imaginative. HUW FULLERTON
MEET THE ANGELS AND DEMONS
Gabriel - JON HAMM - The leader of the angels has lost his memory, and is wandering around — naked — on Earth. Only Aziraphale and Crowley can help.
Shax - MIRANDA RICHARDSON - After playing a human psychic in series one, the Blackadder legend returns as a new character — Hell’s new London agent.
Michael - DOON MACKICHAN - The Two Doors Down star returns as an ambitious archangel looking to take Gabriel’s place — and punish anyone hiding him.
Beelzebub - SHELLEY CONN - The Bridgerton actor plays the leader of Hell’s forces (replacing Anna Maxwell Martin, who had scheduling conflicts).

“the victim’s brother, father and sister bare “animosity” toward me, so I will not address them” -- Offender
David Anthony Parga, California inmate AV0978, born 1986, incarceration intake in 2014 at age 28, sentenced to 50 years to life, projected discharge date not available
Murder
A member of the Westside La Habra gang that is tied to the Mexican Mafia, Parga was found guilty of second-degree murder and sentencing enhancements for being the triggerman in the fatal shooting of Leland Washington, an African-American Cal State Fullerton student with no gang affiliations who was attending a Halloween 2006 party in La Habra.
Investigators and prosecutors originally surmised Parga killed Washington because he was black and to further the activities of the Westside gang, which like many Latino gangs in neighboring Los Angeles County has ties to the Mexican Mafia. Those gangs have for years targeted African Americans to drive them out of LA neighborhoods.
But Senior Deputy District Attorney Jim Mendelson would tell jurors Washington was part of a group that had been kicked out of the party and later returned to hang out outside, something that Parga considered disrespectful to his gang. After the party host warned his invited guest Washington and his group to leave, Parga walked up to the student athlete and shot him four times with a .22-caliber pistol. A bullet ripping through Washington's aorta, liver and small intestine caused him to bleed to death internally.
Parga's attorney, Ken Morrison of the Orange County Alternate Defender's Office, said authorities got the wrong man, according to a City News Service report that adds Parga fired Morrison and represented himself at today's sentencing in Santa Ana.
Imposing the 50-year term, Judge Steven Bromberg called Parga a “coward,” reports City News Service's courtroom reporter Paul Anderson.
“This was a senseless and a very, very stupid killing of a young man about to graduate college,'' said Bromberg, referring to Washington being a semester away from bachelor degrees in accounting and business administration. “The defendant's conduct was about as cold-blooded as cold-blooded can be, and that's what makes you a coward.”
Parga also got his chance to address the court, saying he felt Leland's brother, father and sister bore “animosity” toward him. Thus, he directed his comments to Bessie Washington, Leland's mother.
“I know there's nothing I can do to bring (the victim) back and I'm deeply sorry about what happened to him. To you, specifically, I want to say I'm sorry about what happened to your son.”

Tech Leaders Thoughts on Remote Work
Tumblr media
Top 10 Remote Management Motivational Quotes
1. Kenneth Matos,
Director of People Science at Culture Amp
“People today really value workplace flexibility and remote work because it allows them to focus their energies on work and life as opposed to commuting or other complications due to geography..”
2. Michael Dell,
Chairman and CEO of Dell Technologies
“Technology now allows people to connect anytime, anywhere, to anyone in the world, from almost any device. This is dramatically changing the way people work, facilitating 24/7 collaboration with colleagues who are dispersed across time zones, countries, and continents”
3. Spencer Jentzsch,
Head of Community at Baremetrics
“So many people think that the remote work community is made up of only spoiled, privileged millennials and Instagram influencers, and that’s not who we are. We’re people of all ages, from all countries and all socio-economic classes, and what brings us together is our shared mindset that we want to do something different and have adventures sooner, rather than later in life..”
4. Larry English,
President at Centric Consulting
“Giving employees great autonomy and flexibility allows people to feel independent and empowered while still feeling like a part of something bigger. This leads to happy, loyal employees with a rich quality of life, which in turn leads to an amazing culture.”
5. David Fullerton,
Executive Vice President of Engineering at Heap
“Our guiding management philosophy is: ‘Hire smart people and get out of their way.’”
6. Richard Branson,
Founder at Virgin Group
“We like to give people the freedom to work where they want, safe in the knowledge that they have the drive and expertise to perform excellently, whether they are at their desk or in their kitchen. Yours truly has never worked out of an office, and never will.”
7. Drew Houston,
CEO of Dropbox
“The workplace will now be wherever work happens, and the workweek will be whenever work happens best for each person.”
8. Mark Zuckerberg,
Co-founder and chief executive of Meta Platforms
“There are some very clear benefits to remote work. It lets us access talent pools outside of traditional tech hubs in big cities — and that should help spread economic opportunity much more widely around the country and world while also helping us build a more diverse company.”
9. Mark Lobosco,
VP, Talent Solutions at LinkedIn
“Now that companies have built the framework — and experienced the cost and time savings associated with it — there’s no real reason to turn back.”
10. David Coplin,
Chief Envisioning Officer, The Envisioners Ltd
“We need to take a more flexible approach to both the workplace and the work we do; one that provides us both the physical and cognitive space to harness the incredible power, insight and experience we offer, but focused not on the individual processes but instead on the overall outcomes our organisations are seeking to achieve.”
Final Thoughts
Getting your work done by a remote team that is out of sight may seem quite challenging. Managing a remote team that is in different time zones might seem nearly impossible. But communication is key. With proper use of technology and tools, monitoring remote teams can be a breeze. We at Centizen talent hub have over 5+ years of experience in finding the best talents as per your business needs. Centizen makes it easier for you to bring on vetted talents ready to work independently. With our sourcing & hiring team, we can help you find the right employee with suitable skills and culture.

Our apologies to the Grue-Believers expecting Without Warning (1980), but Ghost Story (1981) is a film the Grue-Crew have been keeping their collective eyes on for a few years, patiently waiting for it to move from PPV to a subscription service. Rest assured, Without Warning is already rescheduled to record in late November 2024.
Ghost Story’s cast and crew sports eight Oscar winners plus several nominees, and yet, the Grue-Crew are divided in their appreciation. Compromises and sacrifices must be made when transforming a 500-page, complexly plotted novel into a two-hour movie, and the results are hit-and-miss. Despite its faults, it’s a remarkable film, and the crew has much to discuss.
At the time of this writing, Ghost Story is available to stream from Amazon Prime (for a short time) and multiple PPV sources. It is also available on physical media as a Blu-ray formatted disc from Scream Factory.
Every two weeks, Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1980s podcast will cover another horror film from the 1980s. The next episode’s film, chosen by Jeff, will be The Blob (1988)! Classic Era covered the original 1958 version, and a previous 80s crew covered this version in episode 126 almost seven years ago. This time, the current 80s Grue-Crew will be joined by effects artists Ralph Miller and Jeff Farley, who both worked on the film. This is going to be fun!
Please let them know how they’re doing! They want to hear from you – the coolest, grooviest fans – so leave them a message or comment on the Gruesome Magazine Youtube channel, on the Gruesome Magazine website, or email the Decades of Horror 1980s podcast hosts at [email protected].

an incomplete list of my favorite podcast episodes:
the supergirl radio episode on 5x07, the listener call-in show, or the legacy of supergirl episode, for obvious reasons
for equally obvious reasons, the legends of tomorrow podcast listener call-in show or the listener feedback show from after season 5
a lot of episodes of cult podcast because they’re hilarious, but especially the compound dwellers series, the witchcraft series, or the flordelis dos santos episode
and also because they’re hilarious, a lot of episodes of the ringo zone, but especially their episodes covering the steven universe episodes “alone together”, “an indirect kiss”, and “beach party”, as well as their holiday special
the beer with geeks 100th episode because it’s just a wild conversation
the romancing the pod episode covering twilight (but all of them are so funny and generally great)
the fun fiction episodes covering blue’s clues and my immortal (another hilarious podcast that I could recommend many episodes of)
the talkin’ toons with rob paulsen episodes featuring charlotte fullerton, david kaye, and corey burton, among again many others
