Megacorp Nobility, cyberpunk & feudalism brainworm

Cyberpunk megacorps are feudal hierarchies… or at least they’re close enough that we can map one to the other. My brain wandered into this realization a few months ago, and now I can’t stop thinking about cyberpunk stories and fantasy or historical fiction through this lens. If I’m stuck with it, I might as well share it with you. A set of feudal class assumptions are baked into many cyberpunk…

There’s a feeling this year that inner and outer life have merged, to the point where it’s quaint to wonder what’s a hallucination and what isn’t. Which images are we receiving and which are we projecting, and to which bygone era does this question belong? Everything — thoughts and events equally — feels bathed in the same unreal glow, a feeling at once sickening and exciting, demanding we meet it with a new, wary form of gratitude. That we give thanks. Thanks for what? Thanks for these images, to whomever or whatever is producing them — maybe to ourselves, if they come from within and only seem to be projected out into a world where they barely occur before refracting back into the private sanctum of our screens and our dreams.

Every image causes a local cluster of conspiracies — was the photo doctored, was it taken out of context, was the man in the truck dead before the bomb went off, or was it a different man in there, and what, if anything, did he really know about the drones over New Jersey? (Was he claiming the Chinese have discovered antigravity??) — but these clusters are tiny ripples in the vast ocean of uncertainty as to where these images really come from. The problem is always even bigger than whatever the most paranoid and the most opportunistic among us allege. The problem is so big that maybe it isn’t a problem at all—maybe it’s the basic nature of the entire world. Maybe that’s becoming clear at last, in an age beyond even the fantasy of a solution.

Why does the world look like this now, and does it actually? Is this actually the world we’re looking at? Do these things actually occur in a place other than in the images we see them in, or are the images occurrences in themselves? (And if so, does it matter if we look at them? Is there some conclusion we’re meant to draw, some message we ought to receive, as if the images were sacred objects that, through random contemplation, could yield life-changing insight?)

Is our interest in these images more than prurient, or is prurience, perhaps, a form of worship? A desire to look at the world rather than away from it, even if we can muster no true buy-in, no sense as to where we, the viewer, actually stand within the frothing morass? Are we glad we weren’t there, or do we wish we had been? (And are we peering in at something we’re not meant to see, or is our act of peering the only reason the images exist in the first place — is all of this done, all the atrocities committed, for us?)

In the span of a few weeks, from late 2024 to early 2025, we got Luigi, drones in NJ, several attacks on NYE, and then fires that appear to have flattened Los Angeles, to say nothing of Lynch’s passing, the Inauguration, and a highly suspicious plane crash over the Potomac to top things off. How did our eyeballs get so greedy, and so lucky? Is there a limit to what they can absorb, and will we know when we pass it?

In 2025, we are not a culture in its prime but a culture embalmed within the empire’s political and economic decline, sinking in a formaldehyde of inertia, algorithmic resuscitation, and speculative markets. A few people now hold more wealth and power than anyone before them in history ever has, and yet they have no vision, no ideas, no goals other than to increase this wealth even further. It wouldn’t seem they even experience any joy. We live in the vacuum produced by the failure of the 20th century’s totalizing social dreams—Nazism, communism, and liberalism, which perhaps appeared to have succeeded but has now clearly failed as well… what will fill this vacuum, and if nothing does, what will that mean?

Are we entering the first vacuum that nature has declined to abhor?
