Typography Tuesday
A little Cyrillic, anyone? Today we present some Cyrillic alphabets, along with a couple of graphic usages, reproduced in ABZ, edited by Julian Rothenstein and Mel Gooding, and published in San Francisco by Chronicle Books in 2003 (an earlier edition was published by Shambhala in 1993 as Alphabets & Other Signs). Click or tap on the captions for descriptions.

Making my obsession with the Cyrillic writing system public, pixel art fonts for slavic cyrillic alphabets (with bonus interslavic)!!!
Open to suggestions and updates. I also made some for the turkic languages, check notes for that :0
The alt versions were just for when I was indecisive, but right now I'm pretty happy with the ones I picked.

does anyone have any suggestions for learning Cyrillic?
I've been curious for a while so I tried lingodeer & it kinda just throws you into the deep end. I know Duolingo is getting better about alphabets but if they're going to be pushing AI I want no part of that

СЙРОЖИН (≈Cyrohzin)
Trying to learn Cyrillic as someone who speaks Bad English and Good English (and Bad French) is a mind melter.
It is funny the letters that do stick in my head though (like а, в, д, ж, п, and р), but those mostly stuck because I learned правда first 🤭

the idea of writing a language in a different writing system than it's usually in is so interesting to me. Like,
те идеа ов вритинг а лангваш ин а дипрент вритинг системы тан ит'с юшуалиь вриттен ин ис со интерестинг то ми. Лаикь. (Russian cyrillic)
Θε ιδεα οφ βριτινγ αι λανγυαγε ιν αι διφερεντ βριτινγ συστεμ θαν θτει άυρε υοσιαλλι βριτεν ιν ις σο ιντερεστινγ το με. Λαικε. (greek)
And even in the same alphabet, but different language it is fun. Though that's more common.
Annd iven in de saime alfhabet, bøtt diffærent længuagsj itt is fønn. Dåv datt's måre kommon. (Norwegian latin)
(disclaimer that I'm not that good at either the Greek nor the cyrillic alphabet. Any suggestions as to how to improve this trans-alphabet thing are welcome!)
it's interesting when there are like just sounds kinda missing. It's probably easier there more you know the alphabet and languages using it, but like "f" in Russian is like ???, I used the kinda v-sounding one because v and f are pretty similar, but there might be a better version. And trying to get "they" and "are" in Greek was difficult as well, I probably need to learn more about diphtongs in Greek and the é and à thingies.

National anthem of Ukraine: Ukraine will not perish (Ще не вмерла України)
youtube
It is a tragic national anthem. Why does Russia bully Ukraine, which uses the same Cyrillic alphabet? They are called sibling languages. If you can read Russian, you can read Ukrainian. To begin with, Russia has continued to persecute Ukraine. During Stalin's time, Russia stole grain from Ukraine and millions of Ukrainians starved to death. ...It is Russia that should be destroyed.

no no no, he's like me, he'd recognise д as the Cyrillic d, ω as the Greek ō, ツ as the Katakana ts, etc and have each one of these keyboards installed to toggle between. He would type, not copypaste, each face, and then it would be mutual surprise when he finds out everyone's been copypasting all of them rather than typing character by character every time
