This post made me realize that most people do not know this thing exists. They have not played in the spit fountain.

a lot of people think that agora is more threatening than crown fountain here in chicago but i think that's incorrect! agora is just a bunch of people minding their own business! they're not hurting anyone!

Description

This charming portrayal of a woman who daydreams while weaving a crown of flowers is a fine example of Godefridus Schalcken's refined manner of painting. Its meticulous technique, particularly evident in the rendering of the costume, reflects Schalcken's connection to the Leiden fijnschilders (fine painters), who specialized in small genre scenes executed with extraordinary attention to detail. These gemlike pictures, filled with brilliant touches of color and light, found favor among collectors throughout Europe.

Woman Weaving a Crown of Flowers almost certainly alludes to the yearnings of a young woman for love and marriage. The crown of flowers refers to both of these themes, which are reinforced by the cupid atop the fountain and the young lovers in the distance. The crack in the stone base of the fountain nevertheless offers a warning that, over time, even the most solid foundation of love is fragile.

As a young man, Schalcken moved to Dordrecht, where he was apprenticed to Samuel van Hoogstraten (1627–1678). He then trained in Leiden under Gerrit Dou (1613–1675) and went on to establish himself as an independent master in Dordrecht by the mid-1660s. In 1692 Schalcken moved to the court of King William III and Queen Mary at Windsor, where for seven years he painted portraits of the Dutch-born king and the English aristocracy. In 1699 he settled in The Hague, where he worked for the rest of his life.

I know ppl make fun of the Chicago bean but I do love her she is a funny bean with funny reflections is that not enough also jokes aside I think it’s a genuinely cool sculpture especially when viewed from above you can see exactly why she was named cloud gate

been trying to sort out in my mind what exactly happened vis-a-vis Morastrum during the final fights of RtDL/after this drabble so uh

obviously, she went back to the Lor as soon as the fight with Landia was done, and thus completely missed Magolor swooping in and stealing the Crown.

she gets ready for bed yadda yadda, but she does NOT go to sleep. instead, she decides to stay up reading for a while, because, well, she comes by it (dis?)honestly.

everything seems fine as she’s cozied under the covers with a book, and then... the lights seem to shift. something’s definitely wrong. aaand then she can feel the ship lurch, regardless of any artificial gravity.

listen. i’m just saying being inside the Lor Starcutter during the fight had to be like experiencing some nasty turbulence at best, even just from the intro alone. and it crashing upon defeat certainly doesn’t help matters.

looping back a bit. Morastrum rushes into the main room, expecting to see her dad and ask him what was going on, but... no one. terrified but wanting to know what’s going on, she does her best to turn on the visual display and... hoo boy, is seeing her new friends on Landia’s backs attacking the very ship she’s on ever not a good sign! and it only gets worse as she catches a glimpse of her dad’s current state as the ship goes down.

and... that’s where where my certainty stops. while the Lor obviously wasn’t too damaged in the crash, being the reason that nearly everyone didn’t get disintegrated with that part of Another Dimension, but I don’t know where exactly it landed. if it was anywhere nearby, though, it definitely went into lockdown to some extent (reflecting how. yknow. Helper Magolor physically can’t appear past the Landia fight.), but I’m mainly not sure if Morastrum witnessed.. thiiiiis. or not

@bramblepatch that is a really great question and there's actually a cool answer! Chicago has a robust public art program that has invested in the weirdest shit possible. And that's the point!

So Chicago has a lot of extremely normal sculptures- lots of historical figures, Lincoln, Goethe, this extremely shiny Alexander Hamilton...

And then there's some... other stuff, and it's mostly Pablo Picasso's fault.

So up until the late 50s/early 60s, most of the public art in Chicago was just... y'know, what we think of as public art. But in '63, the folks at the Chicago Civic Center wanted something new and fresh, and so they commissioned Pablo Picasso to do... well, really whatever he wanted. So he made this thing and ended up donating the design to the city. And the city was STOKED because this was Pablo Picasso we're talking about here, and so they started doing things like having all these press events and displaying the maquette without copyright notice and long story short, they accidentally turned it into the public domain... and they kinda leaned into that! it's public art, after all!

Naturally, art critics hated it, so that only made the city lean in more! Let's push boundaries! Let's go weird and abstract! Let's experiment and do things that other cities aren't doing! The push to collect and house contemporary art in the city also got a boost from the foundation of the Museum of Contemporary Art in 1967 and the development of the Art Institute's modern collection.

Then the 1968 Democratic National Convention happened and the statue got even MORE famous because of the pig. Jerry Rubin, Phil Ochs, and the other Yippies held a press conference where they nominated a pig named Pigasus for president of the United States right before the DNC kicked off. They held this at the Picasso statue, and then they were arrested for disorderly conduct. Yes, the pig was also arrested. The pictures and controversy surrounding everything about that convention shoved the Picasso into the spotlight on an even grander national scale, and it really became a striking emblem of the city.

So all this attention to a piece of art that made people really question what public art should and could be really pushed a lot of dialogue and decisions about art that the city continued to accept and commission. After the Picasso came Flamingo in '74:

And so on and so forth. This period of heavy investiture in large, public works of modern art helped cement Chicago as a place where contemporary art could thrive in public spaces- and we haven't really stopped! From Cloud Gate (the Bean) to Agora to a lot of neat, thought-provoking pieces scattered around the city. It's something I think is really cool, even if it did get us the nightmare that is Crown Fountain.

A fascinating look at lost pieces of Chicago's public art- sadly, that now includes Monument with Standing Beast, since Google bought the Thompson Center and tore it down. (The Thompson Center had over 150 pieces of public art, an amazing collection... that's all in some state warehouse now. Hopefully it comes back or is displayed somewhere else that's public, since I'm not sure how much access we'll have to the Thompson Center once Alphabet moves in.)
