☆ went third overall in the ‘21 draft year to the Pittsburgh Penguins

☆ completed her sophomore year at Boston College before she moved to the NHL becoming the first female in the league

☆ everyone thought she would struggle moving so far away but she grew to be independent quickly calling Jim only when she burnt her food

☆ plays as a centre

☆ third child to Ellen and Jim Hughes, only daughter to the couple

☆ a momma’s girl! calls Ellen every Friday night when they catch up, somehow they find things to talk about like Rory doesn’t text her mom with updates of each day…

☆ she swears that Quinn is her favourite brother but she truly has a soft spot for Luke

☆ when they played against each other in college both youngest Hughes siblings landed up in the box for checking

☆ but nonetheless they still love each other and left the box acting like nothing happened.

☆ Jack had to admit that he was sad that his sister didn’t join him in Newark but he was happy to see that Luke came

☆ Quinn almost cried seeing his sister go to Pittsburgh, not because he was proud of her, but because it’s Pittsburgh

☆ getting drafted to the Penguins felt pretty surreal though as it means Rory is now working with one of the most iconic players in the sport’s history

☆ that is probably her big thing she’s looking forward to doing in the league

☆ it’s about time the fresh faces ran the show

Hospital - 2

Nova Crosby -

10:17 pm

Luke paced the hall outside the emergency room, the silence in the bustling hospital, unnerving. The only sounds emanating throughout the hall was his heavy footsteps and frantic breathing, erratic like his heart. Anyone passing by would be highly concerned, a young man in a distressed state however clamer then staring at Nova's emotionless face as she stayed in a half conscious state of mind.

He had received a message from Sidney saying he was boarding the plane roughly twenty minutes ago, there hadn't been much update from the doctors on Nova's state as they were currently trying to figure out what's wrong and what the best course of treatment would be.

Luke was roughly on his thirtieth lap down the hall when a door crashes open and a nurse is navy scrubs peered out, when she spotted his pacing figure she moved towards him, calling out gently.

"Are you here for Nova Crosby?" she spoke quietly, hands clasping in front of her. The nurse stood like a pylon in the storm of Luke's emotions as he whipped around and practically sprinted to her, after hearing nothing for the first forty minutes of being in the hospital Luke was becoming understandably desperate.

Anticipating the barrage of questions the nurse tenderly grasped his arm and led him to a small cluster of seats adoring the side of the hall, non-verbally asking him to take a seat. News about any loved on becoming injured and hospitalised is always hard to deal with. Luke tried and failed to form words but no words from any of the 7,000 dialects of the world would accurately depict his feelings.

"Take you're time son." she murmured grazing her hand feather-lightly over the fabric of his hoodie. Luke choked out a wet, unintelligible sound before taking another few gasping breaths desperately trying to tame his mind but it felt akin to herding cats.

"H-how is she." he formed eventually, lips feeling swollen around the words. His brain was still struggling to even comprehend the fact that this situation was real, that Nova was in the emergency department with critical injuries and all he could do is watch and wait for his Nova to come back to him.

"She's going to alright.. eventually." the nurse stated, "I'm not going to sugar coat it. She has a long road ahead of her and will need lots of support but right now they are preparing for surgery to place some disk in her back to counteract the vertebrate discs from deflating."

Luke took a deep breath, "Something tells me that won't be it."

The nurse sighed, the smile lines on her face showing the many happy moments and information she would have shared but now it only sported a frown, "She has a minor concussion, however that is the least of your worries, she also has a fractured sternum but there is little we can do about that." She let out a long sigh, "We will need to keep her under monitoring though at risk of a collapsed lung."

Luke picked at the skin around his finger, taking a deep breath. "That's a lot."

The nurse smiled softly, "It could however be much, much worse too hon." she watched as Luke contemplated this notion, grappling once again with his mind before he nodded reluctantly.

"I think you should take a walk, hon. Go down to the cafe on level two, they do a wonderful banana bread." the nurse smiled gently, standing up and guiding Luke with her.

"I will, you have my phone number, her father's too but he is on a plane here currently so please, call me if anything changes." Luke begged, eyes wide and voice shaky.

"I will hon, I will personally make sure." She smiled gently, "Now go eat! Banana bread remember!"

Luke nodded to her grateful for the support in this treacherous time, as the doors to the elevator opened and he stepped in his phone buzzed.

Sidney - 11:02 I've landed, what's new? I'll be there in half an hour.

“Are you sure?” Sidney looked unsettled as he sat on his daughters bed and watched as she packed her suitcase, she’s been home for a week now after her surgery and has got her hard cast on her hand a few days ago after the swelling went down and has her arm in a sling for most the time to keep her hand elevated.

He’s loved having her back home the last week and she’s been at the rink with every day dnd he knows the team is loving her being back.

Cameron told Sidney she was planning to go to Chicago for a few days and stay with Connor, she wanted to go to his game and go to his family skate especially since his family couldn’t make it.

Sidney didn’t mind her going but he’s been extra protective since she got hurt and is worried because she really only had one arm she can use right and will have to navigate through the airport alone.

“Yes Dad.” Cameron fondly rolled her eyes as her dad asked the same question again, she slipped in her toiletry bag and shut her suitcase close which seemed to be quite the struggle with one hand making Sidney lean across the bed and help her close it.

“Thanks.” Cameron mumbled before grabbing her carry on back and packing that very quickly before setting it on top of her suitcase.

She sat down on her bed next to her dad and Mr. Mack immediately plopped onto her lap, she usually took her cat with her everywhere but she wasn’t going to this trip to see Connor. Connor and Mr. Mack would love to see each but Cameron knew it wasn’t a smart choice with her being hurt and trying to bring her cat as well especially since she was only going to be there for four nights and knew Mr. Mack will be fine with her Dad.

Sidney wrapped an arm around his daughter pressing a gentle kiss to the top of her head, “Should we get going?” Sidney asked checking the time.

Cameron nodded and pressed a few more kisses to her cats head before sadly getting up and gently putting Mr.Mack down, “I’ll be home soon Mr. Mack promise, be good for Dad for me.” Cameron spoke softly to her cat before she reluctantly turned away and saw her Dad already walked out with her bags.

Sidney loaded up the car and started the drive to the airport, he parked the car at the parking lot and grabbed her bags walking in with her, he was absolutely not letting her walk through the airport with her bags without him.

Sidney checked in her suitcase so she only had her backpack on and he walked her to the security and hugged her gently, he didn’t like her not being with him when she was injured but he also knew she missed Connor.

“Say hi to Nate for me.” Sidney told her making her laugh softly.

“Text me for anything.” Sidney reminded her making her fondly smile and nod, he pressed one more kiss to his daughter’s head and let go of her.

Cameron waved with her good hand and headed to into security, it went quickly and she walked to her gate and saw she had a lot of extra time.

She headed to Starbucks and got a hot oat matcha latte and a muffin before heading to her gate as they started boarding and she shook her head fondly seeing what seat her Dad bought her and sat down.

Cameron struggled a bit to get her headphones on and then she turned her music on and she just sipped on her matcha as the plane started moving and soon was taking off.

The flight to Chicago is only half and half and it went by quickly.

Cameron slowly grabbed her things and got off the plane heading to grabbed her checked bag and headed outside and quickly found Connor at his car.

“Hey Camers.” Connor spoke softly hugging her gently being careful of her hand and her sling, he hasn’t seen her since the start of the season and she came out to his first game against her Dad.

“Hi Connie.” Cameron let out a happy sigh hugging her best friend back with one arm.

Connor squeezed her softly once more feeling better to see her again because he’s been worrying over her a lot since he watched her game that she got injured.

“Come on.” Connor out everything into the car for her and opened the door helping her in even if she didn’t necessarily need it. Connor drove them to his apartment and carried her things up to his apartment and brought her to his guest room.

He had a game in a few hours against Colorado, also another reason Cameron came out today so she can see Nate.

Connor headed to take his pre game nap and Cameron needed to rest too so he got her an ice pack and she took her pain medication and slowly fell asleep too.

Connor woke up over an hour later and headed into the guest room seeing Cameron sleeping but her face looked uncomfortable and he knew she probably isn’t sleeping the best with her hand.

Connor softly woke up Cameron before heading to his room to get ready for the game.

Cameron rubbed her face and she kneeled down in front of her suitcase and was able to open it one handed and grabbed out her outfit.

Cameron was not taking off her sling right now and changing her black shirt underneath so she just got her sweatpants off and managed to put on her blue jeans and slipped her feet into black boots. Cameron grabbed her Blackhawks hat she got from Connor when he got drafted and put it on and she grabbed her plaid trench coat knowing she would need help.

Cameron grabbed her purse making sure everything was in there especially her pain medication and walked out to the living room seeing Connor waiting for her.

“Could you?” Cameron asked sheepishly, she is getting use to the fact that she cannot be fully alone right now.

Connor easily smiled and helped her good arm into her trench coat and wrapped the other side of the coat over her bad arm.

Connor and Cameron headed to the rink as Connor drove them and Connor made sure to walk Cameron to her suit making sure she would be okay and had everything before she shooed him off to go warm up.

Connor pressed a kiss to the top of her head that was covered by a hat before rushing off to the locker room.

Cameron got some food that was in the suite knowing she needed to eat and she munched on some food and texted her Dad until the game started.

Cameron waved would her good hand at Nate and all of his teammates that she knows seeing them looking at her waving and she waved at Connor.

Cameron awkwardly smiled waving softly as she was on the jumbotron and a lot of people looked over at her.

Cameron cheered softly as Blackhawks got the first goal of the game and Connor got an assist.

Colorado scored next and Nate got an assist and he got an assist on the next goal too.

Connor got an assist on the last goal of the period too.

No one scored in the second period leaving the game tied heading into the last period and Chicago got a goal and then won 3-2.

Cameron headed down to the locker room waiting for Nate and Connor to come out.

Cameron smiled seeing Nate coming out the locker room, “Uncle Natey.” Cameron grinned and Nate immediately smiled hearing her voice and headed right to her.

“Baby Crosby.” Nate gently pulled her into a tight hug rubbing her back gently, “Your growing up too fast.” Nate frowned as he pulled back seeing how she looks older and older every time he sees her.

He still sees her at the young child who gave him the moose drawing and now she’s one of the top hockey prospects right now and will be going first overall in a couple months and next season he will be playing against her.

Cameron laughed softly at his words just as Connor came out and Nate and Connor shared a hug before they all headed to Connor’s car and out to dinner.

Nate helped Cameron take her jacket off as they sat down for her dinner and Connor opened the menu for Cameron.

“How is that doing?” Nate asked her glancing at her sling and cast. She only had surgery ten days ago.

“Healing, i should be back the beginning of February.” Cameron told him, she got cleared yesterday that she was allowed to do small regular activities as long as she takes it easy, meaning she can skate but only with someone and slowly.

Nate nodded softly, “You doing okay with it?”

“It’s an adjustment.” Cameron sighed it was difficult suddenly having to do everything only one handed.

Nate nodded and changed the topic he didn’t bring up her injury again for the rest of the night.

Cameron, Connor and just spent the rest of the night catching up with each other over dinner.

December 20, 2023

Cameron walked next to Connor down to the Blackhawks arena and Connor was holding her skates in his hand and he opened the door letting her walk in first and walked to her stall.

“Nick this is Cameron my best friend.” Connor introduced them as Cameron sat down on his stall and Connor helped her take her shoes off and she slipped her skates on and he started tying them.

“Hi.” Cameron smiled slightly at Nick and offered her good hand, she has heard a lot about Nick.

“Hey.” Nick grinned shaking her hand back, he has heard a lot about Cameron.

Connor introduced her to more of the boys as he put her skates on than his one skates and they headed toward the ice.

Cameron let out a happy sigh as she stepped onto the ice, the last ten days is the longest she ever went without going on the ice.

Connor smiled fondly at her happy face and kept close to her, he offered his good arm as they shouldn’t take any chances and she sighed but nodded taking his arm and they started skating together.

It made them both miss playing hockey together and just being on the same ice with each other. They both hoped one day they would be on the same line again.

Cameron and Connor were of course asked for pictures by the media team and they smiled for all of those before continuing skating.

It’s been a while since Cameron just to skate and she was glad she got to today.

December 21, 2023

Connor and Cameron spent the day just chilling on his couch together after they went out in the morning and walked to breakfast.

They both aren’t the biggest social people so they have always enjoyed just being comfortable on the couch and watching something together.

They spent most of the day there until it got closer to dinner and Connor and Cameron headed to his kitchen as Connor was making them dinner showing Cameron he had gotten okay at cooking.

“So Fraser?” Connor asked with a small smirk as looked over the pan that was cooking salmon.

Cameron’s cheeks went pink, “Maybe.” She mumbled softly.

“I’m gone for a few months and you find a crush.” Connor playfully pouted making her laugh, he was a bit disappointed he didn’t get to see them interacting because Cameron is his best friend and Fraser one of his closest friends.

“Are you going to say anything?” Connor asked as he took the pan off the flame and put the salmon in their bowls.

“Not yet.” Cameron shook her head no, maybe later, “I’m not eighteen yet.” Cameron knew Fraser would not do anything while she is still seventeen and she respected that.

“Ahh.” Connor nodded realizing she wanted to wait till she was eighteen because Fraser was of age.

“This is good.” Cameron nodded approvingly as she took her first bite making Connor beam proudly.

“Yeah?” Connor looked hopeful, he’s been leaning how to cook for himself and Cameron is really the first person he’s cooked for. It meant a lot that she liked it especially as when they lived in Regina together Cameron did the cooking.

“Really.” Cameron nodded back honestly making Connor beam happy.

Connor and Cameron just enjoyed the rest of the night together as Cameron was heading home tomorrow morning.

December 22, 2023

Connor drove them to the airport and parked in the parking lot, “What you’re not walking in alone.” Connor said seeing her surprised look when he didn’t go through the line.

Cameron rolled her eyes fondly at her best friend’s protectiveness and got out the car as Connor grabbed her bags.

Connor walked in with Cameron and made sure her bag was checked in and walked her to security before he pulled her into a hug, “I’ll see you soon Camers.” Connor mumbled softly he missed the days living with his best friends and know he plays in Chicago and she plays in Vancouver for now.

“Bye Connie.” Cameron mumbled back and squeezed him once more with her good arm and pulled back smiling at him before walking to security.

She was looking forward to getting home and being with Dad and Mr. Mack. The only good thing about being injured is getting to be at home with her Dad again and near all the Penguins.

Boyfriend! Girlfriend!

Nova Crosby -

“Could they take any longer?” Nova muttered under breath, peering around the corner of the plane seat to see what was holding her from exiting the plane.

“It takes as long as it takes Novs.” Sidney chided, taking a long sip from his glass of Chardonnay. Flicking through a magazine as he waited to be told he can de-board the plane. “Sit back in your seat, and wait honey.”

With a huff she flopped back into the padded chair, blowing stray hair that had escaped out of her bun out of her face. She flexed her fingers as she gripped arm rests of the chair, stretching her patience wire thin.

“It’s not like I haven’t seen him or anything, it’s just been 6 months, 18 days, 4 hours and 37 minutes.” Nova retorted, swinging her leg out slightly, kicking the carpet with her foot.

Sid just watched with a smile, before leaving Pittsburgh he had spent some time talking to Ellen Hughes, who conveyed a similar impatience in her youngest son wanting desperately to skip time to see his girlfriend of seven months.

"You facetimed him twice before the flight, and texted him until you had to switch off your phone." Sidney stated, looking over at her pointedly.

"It's not the same as actually seeing him Dad!" Nova protested, looking over at him, "i just miss him, he genuinely cares about me and wants to see me too... I hope so anyway."

"Trust me Novs, he wants to see you. I know it's better in real life." Sid chuckled and grabbed her knee, giving it an affectionate rub.

She settled back in the chair and let out a deep breath, closing her eyes momentarily as she attempted to drive her nerves into the ground. Nodding to herself, she opened her eyes and looked down the isle to where it was clearing out and back over her shoulder to her father. He nodded and they both stood up, Sid grabbed their carry-on luggage from the overhead locker and followed Nova out of the plane and into the terminal.

Making their way through the airport and towards baggage claim, Sid stood and waited for their bags while Nova had her head in her phone, texting Luke to try and find out where he was standing.

"Nova!" a young voice yelled "Over here Novs!"

Sidney watched as his daughter narrowly avoided whiplash as she turned around, he watched her shoulder sag as she breathed in, almost dreamily, gaze clicking on Luke standing about forty-five feet away with a small bouquet of gerberas. The brown-eyed girl wasted no time in dropping her backpack and tearing across the slippery tiled floor toward where Luke stands. The poor boy had barely any time to react and move the flowers before he was nearly crash tackled by a young Crosby, stumbling slightly from the force that Nova came hurtling at him with he wrapped his arms around her tightly, rocking the two of them back and forth.

Placing a gentle kiss in her hair, looking up to see Sidney watching like a hawk he placed another staring him down. Daring him to say something and ruin the moment.

Pulling away, the plastic wrapping around the bunch of flowers which Luke managed to salvage from being crushed, crackled as he held out the assortment to her, a small smile gracing his lips as her expression lit up at the flowers.

"Thank you Lukey!" Nova cooed, hugging them to her chest, "Their so pretty!" Nova leaned up and pecked his cheek, slowly coming back to flat feet as her father approached with Luke's mother in tow.

"How's that kids?" Ellen asked, walking along next to Sidney who was wheeling both his and Nova's bag beside him.

Luke had Nova settled into his side, tucked under his arm. Both teenagers grinning like they had just found gold. Nova, cuddling into Luke a little further spoke up.

"Mhm," She hummed, looking up at him and bonking her head into his chest. "Boyfriend."

Luke chuckled, dropping his head to rest onto hers, affectionately bonking her too. "Girlfriend."

“Hay Hay!” Harrison called towards the stairs where Hayden was downstairs in the basement shooting pucks, “Come here please!” Harrison gently yelled so his daughter could hear him through the house.

“Coming!” A four year old Hayden yelled back from the basement, pouting slighty as she had to set her stick down and ran up the stairs seeing her Dad waiting for her.

Harrison smiled seeing his precious girl and picked her up spinning her around kissing her cheek rapidly making her giggle loudly.

Madison walked down the stairs seeing her loves laughing together, she smiled contently as she watched them, “Alright Har, put her down before she gets sick.” Maddison playfully chided her husband seeing her husband spin there daughter around multiple times.

“Mama!” Hayden beamed and the second her father let her down she ran right over to her mother making Madison pick her up.

“Hello Hayden Lee.” Madison hummed happily pressing a kiss to her daughter’s messy blonde hair.

“Come my darlings we have to meet the new neighbors.” Maddison softly spoke to her husband and daughter, they had saw a new family moving in next door to them and Maddison wanted to introduce themselves.

Hayden was set down and she grabbed onto her mother’s hand.

The family of three walked out of the house and over to the house next to them seeing the family standing outside the house, the family seemed to have three young boys and their parents.

“Hello.” Maddison kindly called out to their new neighbors, she was smiling kindly at the family.

“Hi!” The woman beamed walking over to shake Maddison and Harrison’s hands, “I’m Ellen and this is my husband Jim. And these are our three boys-”Ellen was interrupted by whom seemed to be the middle boy.

“OH MY GOSH!” The boy yelled looking at Harrison with starry eyes, “Your Harrison Blake! You won three stanley cups with the Edmonton Oilers and got the most goals ever scored in a playoff series and-“ The boy contained to ramble off facts making Harrison smile fondly.

Jim and Ellen shared a fond exasperated look because of their four year old, who is absolutely obsessed with Harrison Blake, who happened to now be their neighbor.

“That’s Jack. Sorry he gets excited.” Ellen fondly shook her head running a hand over Jack’s hair trying to calm him down.

“No worries it was very cool.” Harrison kindly reassured Ellen and Jim truthfully not minding at all and is quite use to that reaction meeting fan, kids especially, he playfully winked at Jack making him giggle.

Ellen smiled looking relieved and grateful, “This is Quinn our eldest and Luke our youngest.” Luke looked very young and seemed to just be walking and Quinn was very quiet and seemed content to watch.

“Do you play Hockey!” Hayden blurted out, she had been trying to not ask since Jack started rambling but she couldn’t wait no longer.

“I do!” Jack beamed looking excited, “Do you?” Jack looked at her like her answer would he the reason if they became friends or not.

“Of course i do!” Hayden scoffed looking offended it was even a question.

Hayden and Jack shared a look knowing immediately they were best friends now.

“Come on we can shoot pucks in the basement.” Hayden told Jack after looking at her mother for approval. Maddison smiled softly looking happy her daughter is making friends, especially since they have only moved to Toronto a few months ago after Harrison retired.

“Well what are we waiting for!” Jack beamed giddily and darted towards her house.

“You’ll come to?” Hayden asked softly looking at Quinn with her eyes wide and pleadingly, Any resolve Quinn might’ve had quickly crumbled from her puppy eyes, something that will become a regular occurrence from now on.

Quinn nodded. “Perfect!” Hayden beamed glad she is going to get another friend and leaned down to Luke’s level holding out her hand to the very young child.

Little Luke beamed and grabbed her hand holding it tightly with his little hands as she linked arms with Quinn and led the two towards her house seeing Jack waiting for them.

“And that’s our Hayden.” Maddison let out a fond laugh once the kids all walked away after Hayden managed to get all of them to join and she introduced her daughter to their new neighbors.

Ellen and Jim shared a look very suprise at how easily Hayden was able to win over all three of their boys hearts especially with Quinn not liking many people and Luke just grumbles at most people he meets.

Ellen had a feeling the Blake’s especially Hayden were going to be very special and important to their family.

“Do you play hockey too Quinny?” Hayden softly but curiously asked as she walked with Quinn and Luke to Jack.

Quinn blinked in suprised from the nickname she has already given him, “I do.” Quinn answered quietly still a little confused why he is so comfortable around this little girl already.

“What about you Lukey? Do you like hockey?” Hayden softly asked little Luke.

Luke looked up at Hayden with a beaming smile and clapped his hands, “Hockey.”

Hayden giggled at Luke’s answer as Quinn smiled.

“Finally!” Jack dramatically exclaimed from where he was sitting on the front porch of the Blake’s house, waiting for his new best friend, who had also brought his two brothers.

“Come on silly.” Hayden teased Jack softly as she opened the door to her house leading the three boys inside and to the stairs that lead to her basement.

“Woah!” Jack mumbled in awe as he looked around her shooting room, it was like a mini hockey rink, it was so awesome.

Hayden just shrugged as her dad had designed the hockey room and he uses it just as much as she does.

Hayden handed Quinn and Jack both a hockey stick that was roughly around their size and then she grabbed one of her mini sticks to Luke, who looked more content to try and chew on the stick.

It was the first of many times the four were together in the Blake’s hockey room, the room became the spot that all four of them would always goes to and if any of the parents would try and find any of them it was not surprising to find them there.

okay but like maybe rory having her first like fight or scrum or smth and everyones just really proud of her cause she handled it like a fucking badass

It wasn’t her brightest moment to put it nicely.

Playing up in Detroit it felt like the pressure was on to make her parents and Luke proud as they watched on.

But that struggled to happen when Joe Veleno didn’t stop trying to force Rory in to the board until the second quarter when he finally got enough momentum to knock her off of her feet doing it.

Before the other penguins player could get over there to help her up Rory got herself off of the ice before she tapped the red wings player on the shoulder causing him to turn around where she had the perfect line of sight.

Rory used the skills that Quinn and Jack taught her as she made her hand turn into a fist and brought up straight up the boys face with speed.

Her hand hit the bottom of his nose and his two front teeth (she was very proud to say that she made someone lose their teeth in her first fight). So this like really gets both teams riled up with anger.

Now the other penguins players act because they don’t want her getting hurt.

As she’s skating to the benched to get subbed off the jumbotron shows all of her families reactions:

Jim and Luke are laughing at the replays because they always swore that Rory packed that punch.

Ellen is sat with her head in her hands as she had just given Jack a speech to behave more like his sister did.

theres a video of all the hughes siblings playing hockey when they were younger and someone takes rorys stick and she just starts sobbing shes inconsoluable and sidney sees the video cuz she prolly had a crosby jersey on and is like awee and then when she screams hes like oh🫢

Geno saw the video first.

He cropped the clip leaving it with only the part where she’s visibly in a Crosby jersey.

Sidney is actually sat in bed with Rory when Geno sends it to the little group chat that Sidney, Kris and Geno have together.

Personally he loves it.

Like Sidney just smirks over to her and flips his phone so she can see it “knew you liked me.” He teases her making Rory roll her eyes.

She doesn’t take long to find the full clip because Jim had sent it to her a few weeks ago.

Rory will never forget the way Sidney’s face dropped seeing how she screamed before she punched the boy “honestly that’s the Rory I know.” Sidney couldn’t even deny it as he smiled.

Rory ran her hand along his chin “that’s why you love me though.” She giggles pecking his lips has he nodded.
