star crossed loves au | connor bedard x kailey hughes au ↳ slowly, but surely. ↳ au masterlist!

warnings: angst, anxiety attack, swearing etc. also this takes place in feburary after his jaw fracture! word count: 2.2k. - longer than i expected lol

"do you wanna come to my game?" was a simple question, and one of innocence. kailey would give it that, but the deep feeling of dread was felt rather too quickly for her liking. she looked away from connor as the two were finishing up breakfast, hoping he wouldn't notice the uneasiness that plagued her features. he did. the two had been inseparable since new years, and had became official only a few days afterwards. ofcourse, he'd see the tension that sprang up in her features, the inability to look at him - especially in the eye - and the way that he body seemed to be folding in on itself. she stood up abruptly, bringing the plate back into the kitchen, and connor watched with a million questions buzzing around. she came back in and sat down, swirling her lukewarm coffee. "i um, i cant go." she said staring down the place mat. his eyebrows furrowed, "can't or won't go?" he questioned, hoping for some clarification. she made direct eye contact with him and gave him a small frown, "i wish i could go, i really do. but i can't bring myself to." she said bringing the last of the once hot liquid to her mouth. he shook his head, "you have to tell me what that means kails." he said setting down his fork now.

she sighed, setting the mug down. "i vowed to myself long ago that i'd never go to another hockey game in my life, let alone step into a rink once more." she paused sniffling, "that game ruined my childhood and my relationships with the rest of my family." she said and it felt like a dagger piercing his heart. "then why, why did you agree to be my girlfriend if you can't stand what i do?" he questioned without a second thought, and he could see how much it hurt the blonde. she made a tsk noise, "i can respect and support what you do from afar connor. but y'know now that you say that, why did i say yes? why did i say yes when i knew that i wouldn't be able to listen to the sound of skates hitting the ice when it really mattered? even if it was the stanley cup final, i wouldn't be able to do it because of how much it would make me sick." she finished, standing up and heading towards his condo door. "wait kail-" she cut him off with the front door opening. she stood between the threshold, looking back at connor. "you're right connor, how can i support you when i cant even support my own brothers?" she asked rhetorically before stepping full into the hallway and towards the elevator. as soon as she hit the elevator, she quickly began to cry while hunching over with her eyes shut. connor stood with his mouth agape, unsure if he should go after her or let her go. how could he let her go, when besides hockey- she was the thing he was most sure about in his life?

becca kaileys roommate and longtime best friend, could tell something off that morning when kailey came back to the apartment in a fit of rage. "what'd they do now?" kailey questioned, thinking her brothers said something stupid. "not them, him." she responded beginning to pace. "but its my fault, im the one who said yes without telling him i cant watch hockey. im the one who has wasted his time because why the hell would he date somebody who cant walk into an arena without throwing up?" she blurted as becca stood up, concern lacing her gaze. "hey kails? wanna sit down?" she questioned softly, wrapping her arms gently over her the blonde's. kailey immediately began to break down again, completely folding into becca's figure.

hockey was something that was seldom spoken about in the apartment. it was not off limits per se, but it was to be treaded lightly. unfortunately, kailey held a great amount of disdain for the sport and if it was mixed in with her brothers, it was a double whammy and usually ended in an anxiety attack. sure, she'd been to therapy for her childhood, jack and the topic of of hockey had come up many times. it was the reason why she was plucked away from her budding life in toronto, because they wanted the family to be with jack and usa hockey. it was why everything and everyone that she adored, was taken away from her. so she set up boundaries, and that meant no hockey. besides quinn's debut, no debut for luke or jack. no playoff games, nada nothing. her parents had respected her choice, and with the backing from her therapist - so did the rest of the family. this was something she didn't tell connor when they were talking during break before new years, because she knew that it would scare him away. just like it had now.

kaileys thoughts were interrupted, by a loud knock on their apartment door. "ill be right back." becca announced, standing up and walking towards the door. "ill be in my room." kailey responded, barely audible but becca picked it up. as soon as kailey was out of view, she opened the door to connor. who looked distraught, angry and sad all at the same time. "um hello?" becca said and connor opened the door, pushing his way inside. "where is she?" he asked flustered, and becca sighed. he met becca's gaze and snapped in her face, "becca, where is she?" he repeated and becca stood their in a shocked state. before becca could respond, they both heard a sob or more like a wrenching cry from kailey's bedroom. connor wasted no minute shoving off his shoes and throwing his jacket on becca, before heading down the hallway. becca could only chuckle in response, before sending him a salute as a joke and one that he didn't see. "go get em." she mumbled, before putting his stuff down.

connor knocked on the door before opening it, and as he opened it he found kailey on her bed. her head was in her hands and hunched over. his heart absolutely broke as he walked over, and sat beside kailey pulling her into his body. "its ok kails, I've got you." he whispered, repeating it every few seconds. "im not mad or upset, i promise." he whispered after a few minutes. her sobbing began to quiet down, but her breathing was still too heavy for his liking. "but you were right." she said after about ten minutes. he looked down and shook his head, "i was not right." he stated boldly. she pulled away from his chest, looking at him properly now. "you were right, why should i be your girlfriend if i cant support you on a nightly basis? its not fair to you con, its not." she said running a hand through her hair. "so what?" he questioned, and she looked at him. "so what? you matter more than hockey. yeah we may have only known each other for a month now, but I've never been more sure about somebody or something in my life besides hockey. you and our relationship im so sure about, ask any of the guys. they probably would tell you that im so disgustingly annoying." he mused causing her to giggle softly. "i promise that just because you choose not to watch hockey, doesn't mean that im gonna break up with you." he argued and she chuckled. "you don't like me enough to say and do that." she said rolling her eyes, and he shook his head. "no, i love you that's why." he confessed and she slowly looked back towards him. "wait...what?" she asked, barely breathing. he grinned before smiling, "i love you kailey clara and what are you gonna do about that?" he mused causing her to blush. she breathed in heavily why playfully rolling her eyes, "i can either kick you out or tell you that i love you back." she hummed, leaning closer towards him. "thankfully for you, its the latter." she hummed staring down his lips before pulling him in for a passionate and deep kiss.

the two pulled away after about ten seconds, pressing their foreheads against one another's. "as long as you say you're my number one fan we'll be good. this cements everything." he joked causing her to giggle. "you cheeky boy! but yes, good thing ill be your number one fan as long as you have me." she grinned before they kissed once more.

later on in the afternoon as the two cuddled with one another after connor's nose found solace in kaileys neck, the blonde spoke up. "i promise connor, to open myself up to hockey. i promise im going to try, ok?" she questioned turning around to face him. he had a small hopeful smile grace his features, "slowly but surely kails." he hummed before pulling her into his chest and placing a kiss on her head.

it was two weeks later, and after a black graphic t-shirt of connor came in- her and becca were off to a game against the florida panthers. the two walked arm and arm towards the 300's section wanting to experience it in the 'trenches' kailey had always called them, and experience it with some die hard fans. and, far enough away that nobody on the team or their partners would recognize her. she wanted to surprise connor.

"i feel like i could vomit." she confessed, sitting next to becca who only gave her an encouraging smile. "the game's underway, maybe that'll distract?" she questioned and kailey could only laugh in response. the two's attention focused on the game, and some point during it she had sent a text to not only tessa, alex vlasics girlfriend but her mom as well, sealing it with a picture of her view. her mom and dad gushed and sent words of encouragement and tessa begged for her to meet them after the game in the wags and family box. to which kailey responded, was a tba. the blackhawks ended up wining 3-1 with connor getting a goal and two assists. and with being on somewhat of a high, she told tessa that they would meet her in the 200's section. tessa stood their waiting for them and as soon as she saw them, she began to jump up and down with excitement. "im so happy you're here!!!" tessa gushed, pulling kailey in for a huge hug. she then moved towards becca and the two of them hyped the youngest hughes up. "oh my god, stopppp." she said blushing. "can you not, were in public you two." as the two girls highfived each other. "what?! this is a big deal girlfriend. you made it through the entire game." becca said shaking the girl just a bit. tessa's phone dinged with a text from alex, him and connor were walking towards the box now.

"get your ass in there, now." tessa demand pointing back towards the box door and becca quicky pulled her inside. becca smiled and waved to some of the girl's she had met at new years with kailey, and they were all happy to see kailey. finally. "im nervous beccs." kailey said in a whisper and becca smiled, "he'll be happy to see you chica." she smiled down at her best friend who only nodded.

kailey heard his voice before she saw him, and once becca looked behind her she turned around. connor hadn't taken notice yet but once tessa made a nonchalant comment, he quickly looked around the now - desolate- room and then his eyes landed on her. she smiled softly, once their eyes connected. he smiled, and then made his way over ot the girl. he pulled her in for a big hug without a word, his nose finding the crook of her neck. "hi pretty girl." he whispered, and she found herself blushing like a fool. "hey superstar." she grinned, before he pulled back a bit to look at her. then he noticed the t-shirt and he smiled, taking a step back to inspect it. "oh, i brought it just for this occasion." she grinned making him chuckle just a bit. "its my face." he said a bit stunned, "it is your face." becca said monotoned which made kailey snicker. "its alright, he's got a pretty face." she teased, "a pretty face, huh?" they heard Phillip kurashev tease and that made connor roll his eyes. "pretty pretty connor!" kevin joined in causing more chuckles to arise, "lets go pretty boy!" mackenzie entwistle teased, and kailey smiled softly.

"come on pretty boy." she teased, beginning to walk out with everybody else. "i should put that as your new name in my phone." becca mused, typing away on her phone. "i swear to god becca if you do!" connor threatened playfully, "you'll what?" she grinned back. "ill tell your little secret..." connor began only for becca to hear and that made becca grow quiet. "you wouldn't dare,🖕🏻" she texted and connor only giggled in response as they walked towards connor car.

it was not as if kailey had been dreading this night for a few weeks at this point, but she was nervous. she was nervous that somebody would recognize her and she'd be out to her brothers. well, the only person with real connection would be alex vlasic but him and jack didn't even speak to one another anymore. something kailey had taken issue from the gecko. anywho, it was now a quarter past 6 and connor would be picking her up any minute now. she had just put the last gold earring in her ear when she heard a knock at her and her best friends beccas apartment. she quickly exited her room and headed over towards the door, and opened it to see connor dressed remarkably dashing. she smiled widely, allowing him to walk in. "woah." connor said pulling her hand in his, and making her do a small twirl. she blushed profusely, letting a small giggle out. "you don't look half bad yourself." she hummed, leaning in closer. he met her without a second to lose, and pulled her in for a quick peck. "you almost ready to go?" he questioned, as she leaned away. "yes! just need to grab my jacket and purse." she said going to grab it, from the counter. he extended his hand out for her, and she quickly took it before they walked out.

the two swayed softly to the music, as they stood talking to some of his teammates and their partners. "holy shit, you don't say?" she heard to the right of her and her eyes instantly went wide. she looked over along with connor, and she saw mackenzie entwistle grinning like a cheshire cat. "oh this is so not happening." she said trying to hide behind her hand. "baby hughes!" mackenzie said laughing, as he stopped right next to them. "i swear to god mack..." she said already feeling the dread of him finding out about them. "what's going on?" connor asked, genuinely confused. mack laughed along with his girlfriend, layla. "please please don't say anything!" the littlest hughes begged. connor continued to look between the two before mack spoke up, "her oldest brother quinn and i used to play back in toronto growing up. him and i are still friends. that's why missy here is freaking out." he said ruffling her hair a bit. she pushed his hand away, and shook her head. "don't worry hughes, i wont say a thing." he said pretending to 'lock' his lips and throw away the key. layla then spoke up, "i promise ill make sure he doesn't say a word." and kailey smiled. "thankyou layla." she said and the girl nodded back.

"so youve known vlassy and macker for years, huh?" connor questioned and she looked up at him. "hmm, unfortunately, my brothers presence can be felt throughout north america." she hummed before finishing her drink. connor looked at her, questions swirling his mind. he'd remember to ask about what she meant, at some point.

"we should do karaoke!" tessa, alex vlasic's longtime girlfriend said from across the hightop table. kailey groaned, leaning her head back into connors shoulder who just laughed in response. "please kailes!!!! we have too!" tessa said already standing up, and jumped in place a few times. kailey groaned before she felt connor place his hands on her hips, squeezing just a bit to make her tickling. "fine!" she said as her hands went to cover his, she shook them off of her and glared at him. she playfully pointed at him, "don't you dare." she grinned as he held up his hands in innocence. "what should we sing?" kailey questioned, with the two walking up to the karaoke booth. "ouu! what about don't stop believing?" tessa questioned, and kailey nodded. "perfect!" she said as they selected the song, and they heard the familiar chords of don't stop believing begin. the two turned around to the group, which began to make their way towards the stage.

tessa pointed at her to do the first bit of lyrics, "just a small town girl livin' in a lonely world." she sung like it was second nature. having heard it so many times growing up, she didn't need the lyrics. neither did tessa. the two belted out the rest of the song, with the crowd beginning to clap at a certain point. tessa and kailey were having the time of their lives, up there. connor looked on with adoration, watching as kailey let loose and went all in on the song. the two finished off on a high note and the team let them know how much they loved it. the two of them laughed loudly, both of them ready to exit the stage. "wait!!!! encore!!!" the group demanded, and the two shook their heads. they'd had enough attention to last them for a few years. "wait, bedsy get up there!" nick foligno demanded, pushing him towards the stage. "bedsy bedsy bedsy!" was chanted, as tessa pulled him up before he could decline. he playfully glared at nick who held a wicked smile, watching the young rookie squirm. "which song?" kailey questioned, and connor walked over. they scrolled for a minute before deciding on, summer nights from grease.

and those two put on a show, with connor coming out of his shell even more.

connor could never find the exact words to use, but he was incredibly grateful for this one. kailey brought out everything good about him, brought him out of his comfort zone and shell. before her, he would have never gotten up there for karaoke. he would have never taken on the song's role with anybody else, but her.

the boys ate it all up, making sure to get enough videos and pictures for future blackmail bait.

the two finished the performance, with kailey in his arms. the look on their faces was pure amusement, wonder, and adoration for one another.

a little while later the couple were sending their goodbyes and hugs to the teammates and wags. she would miss some of the girlfriends and players, mostly the younglings. including kevin korchinski, lukas reichel and phillip kurashev. the two then headed over to nick foligno and his wife, janelle who had opened up their home and arms for connor from the gecko. and once kailey came along, janelle took the youngest hughes under her wing too. their home had become a sanctuary for the two, and gave connor much-needed normalcy in his chaotic life. janelle pulled the girl into her arms, "we'll let you know what happens, im sure nick will tell connor as soon as he knows." she said to kailey who nodded. nick was still in conversations with the team to either extend or retire, and come in for a role within the front office. but whatever happens happens, connor will forever look up to the historic player and cherish their friendship. nick and kailey quickly hugged, "good luck with finals!" he said as they parted. she nodded, thanking him before the older couple walked off.

"did you wanna walk back or get a car?" connor asked as the two were putting on their coats. kailey looked down at her heels, and connor laughed. with a smile on his face while taking her hand, "car it is." he hummed.

awhile later the two headed up to her apartment. they stopped right out of her apartment door, and connor took ahold of her hand once again. "thankyou for tonight, for making me so comfortable getting up there with you. and thankyou for putting up with my teammates." he finished with jokingly, and she grinned. "ofcourse, thankgoodness i have had much practice in the department." she teased. "you sure you don't want me to come over tomorrow and help you study?" he questioned as he pulled her into his arms. she shook her head, "no its ok. becca is here with me. besides, you have an apartment to pack up mr." she said smoothing long sleeve shirt. he shook his head, "yknow when somebody typically offers their unsolicited help and free help might i add- they usually take up the offer." he teased and she laughed heartedly.

"good to know, ill let them know when i could really use the help." she said coyly, and he stuck his tongue out. "yeah yeah yeah bedard." she said tapping a hand to his chest a few times before sliding in her key, she opened it and set down her bag and heels right next to the door, before resuming her embrace with connor. "promise me you'll call me when you take breaks or when your done?" he questioned, and she nodded. "i promise. honors scout." she hummed and he shook his head with a smile. "well i wont keep you anymore, but thankyou for tonight." he said softly. her heart swelled, as she nodded. "thankyou for tonight, and for being you." she smiled before she leaned in for a kiss. he met her halfway, savoring this kiss. he wasn't sure when they would see each other again. he had offered to finish the semester with her, but she told him to go home. and when the littlest hughes was serious, there was no getting her out of the mindset. they pulled apart, and she pecked his cheek real quickly before stepping inside her apartment. "let me know when you get back." she said and he nodded leaning in once more, and in the next moment he was gone.

becca was on the couch, when she walked in. "how was it?" she questioned her best friend and all kailey could do was smile. "i did karoake." she hummed, laying down on the couch across from her. "wait what? the kailey hughes sang in front of people?!" becca gasped, and all kailey could do was blush. "yep. did don't stop believing with tessa, summers night connor, and paradise dashboard with him too." she said as chucked a pillow at becca. "oh im SO asking tessa for proof." she grinned, quickly texting tessa. kailey groaned as she heard her phone go off from the other room.

she made her way over, and saw that it was quinn. she accepted the facetime, and headed over towards her washroom to take her makeup off. "all dressed up? where did you go?" he asked as she propped her phone against the mirror. she rolled her eyes playfully, "nowhere. just with becca." she said taking her micellar water and putting some on a cotton pad. "alright. well mom wanted me to call about our trip in june to upstate new york." he explained, and she nodded. she knew that middle july was when she was going to see cconnor in vancouver; though the family had no idea about him or the trip. she was gonna lie and say it was with becca, knowing they'd take her word for it. she also had a sliver of hope, that she'd tell her brothers beforehand, but needed it to be the perfect moment. "i can arrange your flight with mine - kails." he said grabbing her attention. she looked at the phone, and gave him a small smile, and she went back to focusing on her skincare. "sorry, long night." she lied, wiping her face from her face wash. he nodded, continuing on with the itinerary for the trip. she sniffled, before yawning. quinn continued to speak but looked at his sister, inspecting her demeanor. she was out of it, sort of. she seemed dazed from exhaustion and dazed from whatever she had done that evening.

he was about to speak again, but received a text message from Mackenzie. he opened it up curiously, and saw two videos, with what appeared to be kailey and some guy. "can i call you back tomorrow morning? im really tired." kailey said pulling quinn from his thoughts, "ofcourse. love you kiwi." he smiled. "love you too q, night." she said before hanging up. he pulled up the messages back up, and clicked the first video. it was kailey and connor bedard, singing summer nights & then paradise dashboard. she looked completely free, and so relaxed up there with him. it looked as if she had let her guard down in front of them, and quinn was happy that she had found that. she had found - even by association - a group of people that had nothing to do with him or his brothers, and looked like she adored by all.

his brothers - well more specifically jack - could never see this video. not until kailey brought up connor on her own.

it was all a blur for kailey. it was if she lost her voice, and her ability to move. the moment brendan smith make contact with connor, she knew it was bad. she'd seen that hit and play, plenty of times before. she was sitting on the couch with her best friend and roommate, becca and the two were watching the game together. as soon as connor clutched his jaw, becca looked over toward her best friend and saw the thoughts running a mile a minute. becca went to go grab her friend, but kailey was already off the couch sending a text towards connor. she began to pace the living room with anticipation and the fear that his jaw was broken. she was not naive, and the tweets that had flashed on her twitter were.

she was hoping a concussion, but was prepared for the worst.

it was about 10 minutes into the second period when she saw the tweet that connor was not coming back for the evening, and then a minute later connor responded it. it was in fact a broken jaw, and he was undoubtedly pissed at the situation and pissed that he allowed himself to look down. she appreciated the response though by the Blackhawks. especially (uncle/dad) nick foligno, who had taken him under his wing since the gecko and his wife, had welcomed kailey with open arms. even though the two had been just talking, and now- freshly together. she just did not like that it was over connor, and that it was his injury creating all of this. connor texted her throughout the rest of the game, more so venting and releasing his frustration with it all. and then once nick joined the injury list, he was filled with guilt. though kailey told him very quickly. then the third period came around, and sat with her mouth agape and somewhat pissed off at jack, who had injured himself. nobody touched him, nobody did a thing but his little clumsy ass. unfortunately, now would not be the time for her to say in the group chat 'you guys should get some extra lessons from mom again'. she texted her mom, to see how he was. he was obviously, very pissed at himself.

and then the game was over, and was somewhat sad over the fact that the hawks had lost - despite their grit and comeback. she was pissed off and angry for them at the devils- but it is what it is she said as she laid down for the evening. becca came to wake kailey around 3:45 am, when somebody came to the door for her. the front desk called becca's phone after nobody had answered the buzzer near the front door. apparently their was a guy that was under 5'10, dirty blonde, stocky and had something on his face. kailey quickly threw on her robe, and becca went back to bed. she opened the front door to their apartment, and there was a sad and exhausted-looking connor. "come here." she said barely above a whisper and pulled him in for a big hug. she could visibly feel the tension, stress, and anxiety leave his body as he adjusted to her warmth and smaller frame.

"hi con.." she whispered, pulling back a bit to look at him. her hands were soft and inviting as they gravitated towards his now longer locks, and her eyes pierced his blue ones. she took in his temporary jaw cast/brace. she saw the scary and somewhat gnarly bruising that had already formed on his cheeks, jaw and around his nose. she pulled him down a bit as she stood on her tippy toes and kissed his forehead softly. she did a second one for good measure, before settling her feet back on the ground. "come on, let's get to bed." she said taking ahold of his hand and leading him towards her bedroom. "what do you need?" she questioned as she turned on her bed side lamp, and he shrugged. she saw the carry on bag he had and she grabbed it from him. she opened it, to quickly retrieve his pajamas and handed them to him.

he headed into the connected bathroom, as she fluffed up her two pillows on the other side of her spot. she moved the comforter down a bit so now it was all ready for him. she also turned her string lights and opted to turn off her side bed, the bright light she concluded might be too much for him. she settled back into bed, and curled into her side, facing his side. he put his alarm on for the morning, not far from then, and then sat down before pulling his legs into bed. "what do you need from me?" she questioned softly, as she got into a somewhat comfortable position, sitting up. he pulled his phone from the bedside table and began typing before showing her his phone.

"you being with me is enough kails." she smiled at him softly and then he began to type my hand, "just hold my hand." and she nodded before grabbing ahold of it.

connor was scared, rightfully so about monday when he was going to be checked out. kailey rested her head on his shoulder as softly as she could, and connor met hers with his.

the two of them fell asleep rather quickly, savoring eachother's warmth and presence.

kailey had just come back from a soccer intensive out in los angeles, when jack had just come back from the devils development camp. quinn and kailey had just walked inside through the garage when jack waltzed through the front door demanding the family's attention. he wanted to let them all know what he had gotten up to. kailey silently groaned, and turned towards the kitchen to grab a snack. quinn watched her walk out of the family room and jack could not hide his distaste, "is that how you're gonna treat your brother who's been away for almost a month?" he chastised, referencing his non stop media touring and now development camp. she sighed knowing that this was a fight that he was gonna win, each and every time. she no longer had the energy or will to compete. "why yes jack, id love to know everything." she said sarcastically as she went to grab an apple and creamy peanut butter.

jack made a tsk noise, and began to ramble on for the next 45 minutes. by the time he was done, kailey had managed to slip out without so much as an eyebrow raised from the boy. luke found his way up to her bedroom, softly knocking before stepping inside. she had just finished putting her clothes away or in the laundry bin, and she shook her head. "its not even worth it lukey." she said not looking up at him as she fished through her carry on bag. "oh come on, we all know that you could have put him in his place and shut him up." he said plopping down on her bed. she sighed, standing up and putting her bag up on it's hook. there was a knock on the door as soon as she was about to speak up, "luke were getting food!" they heard jack on the other side. luke was about to speak up as she turned around, "just! go.." she said her voice raising slightly before softening. "just go, please. its whatever." she huffed, taking her towel and going into her connected washroom.

as soon as he shut the door, she shut her eyes and began to sob silently. and then it wasn't silent after a few minutes. she kneeled down and pulled her knees up to her chest, hyperventilating at this point.

ellen was walking past kaileys room when she heard the sobbing, and she quickly made her way in without knocking. however, her bedroom door was locked. "kailey sweetie, can you let me in please?" she said knocking on the washroom door. it only made kailey sob harder, "kailey baby, please. just let me be with you i wont say anything." ellen pleaded, as jim made his way down the hall after he heard ellen shouting. "no! i don't want to talk to you." she cried out, and jim's eyebrows furrowed. "'kiwi, please sweetie we just want to make sure you're ok!" jim added now. kailey shook her head, feeling her breathing become harder and harder. she was having an anxiety attack and felt as if she couldn't breathe. "i-i-i cant bre-breathe." she sobbed, and her parents looked at one another. they didn't know what to do besides breaking down the door. "call quinn!" ellen said in a hushed voice, and jim nodded pulling out his phone.

quinn was in the middle of driving towards their local chipotle, when he got a call. "hey dad, whats up?" he asked tapping the accept call on his phone. "hey uh, we need you to speak to or attempt to speak to kailey." jim said on speaker, before he took it off speaker and pulled it up to his ear. "is everything ok?" he questioned, his tone laced with concern. luke's head popped up from the backseat, quickly going to text kailey. quinn's hit the steering wheel twice, hearing that she was having an anxiety attack - well now, panic attack. "bro chill out." jack said not looking up from his phone. "put her on." quinn said, pulling into the parking lot. jack quickly hopped out as soon as quinn parked, with luke and quinn not moving from their seats. "lets go, i have plans later." jack said from where he stood just next to the passenger door. quinn waved him off as he heard sobbing from the other end, "she wont let us in the room. fuck!" jim swore as ellen continued to beg, with no luck.

"slide it under the door, ill try to talk to her." quinn said and jim nodded putting the phone on speaker and slid it under the door. kailey heard the scrape of the phone on the wood floor, and looked up to see her dads phone. she sniffled before quinn began to talk, "hey kiwi, is there any way i can get you to unlock the door for mom and dad?" he asked softly, and luke leaned in to hear her response. jack sighed, slamming the door and heading inside. kailey sniffled, "im so over it q...im done being treated as if i don't exist or matter." she sobbed taking the phone and bringing it closer. "i wanted to tell you guys what i did in los angeles, i wanted to tell you guys what food i tried or the colleges i visited..." she trailed off shutting her eyes tightly. "but its all about him, all about him!" she said frustratedly. "i know kiwi, i know." quinn said feeling his and luke's heart shatter. "im fine, i promise." she said wiping her nose, "im letting them in." she said hanging up on quinn. quinn swore, along with luke who sighed.

as soon as kailey unlocked the door, ellen made her way in quickly. jim stayed by the doorframe, watching as his wife pulled their daughter into her arms. she cried softly into ellen's arms, ellen's heart breaking at the sight. her happy-go-lucky daughter wasn't happy, and hadn't been for a while.

"no quinn, im sick and tired of him walking around here and telling people that im just another roommate to him? where does he get off by embarrassing me, huh?!" she screamed at her oldest brother. for the past ten minutes the two had been talking, and as it went on kailey's anger grew. "y'know what? im not dealing with this!" she said grabbing her car keys and wallet, and headed downstairs. "kails!" quinn called after her, and ignored him heading down the stairs before going to the garage. "kails wait!" quinn called after her, and she stopped to turn around. "stop defending him! stop it! just stop! next time i need someone to talk to ill know not to come to you, okay?" she screamed about to turn around, but he grabbed her arm before she could do so. she yanked her arm from him, giving him a death glare in the process. "who are we fighting about?" jack questioned cheekily from the living room, and she quickly started her descent towards the second eldest. quinn quickly scuffled after her, wrapping his arms around her waist. "no let go of me!" she screamed, trying to get away. she kicked her foot to his chin, and he let go of her. "dont you touch me luke!" she screamed, pointing a finger at her Irish twin. he held his hands up in innocence, backing away. she then looked towards jack who found all of this amusing.

"kailey." ellen said trying to settle her daughter.

"man if i could only wipe that childish smirk off your face, id be the one smirking. i'd be the one who is fucking happy in this household but NO! it has to be you, always. you have to suck it out of everybody else like goddamn vampire, jack and i only hope karma comes for you..as a rookie." she snapped, before turning around and walking out to the garage. quinn held up his hands, not letting anybody go after her. "you! you don't get to move an inch." he said threatening jack who tried to get up, "i've sat back too damn long and allowed you to treat our only sister like shit for the past three years. I've allowed mom and dad without success try to reprimand you without luck. im sick of you acting like an immature baby who believes that he is the only child in this family. do you realize how annoying it is to hear your voice 24/7? and don't act like i haven't noticed everything, I've just become so immune to it - its made me sick. i love you man but wake up, better yet- grow up!" quinn boomed at his brother, before walking outside. jack looked over towards luke, who only shook his head in response before heading outside after quinn.

ellen and jim looked at one another before they both shook their heads. they stood up, with ellen heading upstairs to kaileys room and jim to his office.

jack sat there alone, not truly understanding or comprehending the true weight of his words and actions to kailey over the years.

the two had not been able to stop texting each other over her holiday break, and ellen quickly caught on.

"hey kailey...just go. go back to chicago." she said the morning of the 31st. "what?" kailey questioned, looking up from her cinnamon rolls and egg. ellen just laughed, "go to chicago. see whoever you haven't been able to stop talking to. im sure becca would love to join you, too!" ellen said bringing her coffee mug to her lips. kailey's eyebrows crinkled, "uh, i don't know what you're talking about." she tried to play off. jim from the living room laughed. "don't lie kiwi, but you also don't have to tell us." he said walking into the kitchen. he plucked a cinnamon roll from the plate, "ill even give you gas money." he mused, before she rolled her eyes. "go go! we wont be upset, our friends invited us over across the street tonight, so we wont be upset if you do go." ellen said trying to get through to persuade her daughter. kailey sighed before giving them a small smile, "alright, ill make a couple calls." she said getting up from her stool and headed upstairs.

an hour later, she was on the road and off to chicago. her body grew with nerves, each mile she passed and each border she crossed. as soon as she was back in the city, she picked up her friend from her friend's house and the two were on the way back to their apartment in the loop. "are we meeting with connor and his teammates?" she questioned, and kailey shrugged. "im waiting for a response, though tessa reached out to me a few weeks ago after alex saw us and invited us out. I've missed her." she said throwing her bags down by the door, and headed towards the washroom. "did you not stop once?" becca teased, as kailey came out. kailey did not respond, which made becca laugh. "hughes genes are strong apparently." she teased and kailey shook her head. "im going to nap, and then we will get ready starting at 8?" she questioned, and becca nodded.

the team was at soho house in the west loop, and tessa quickly went to go fetch them from the door. "hi!!!" she said pulling kailey into a bone-crushing hug, and then hugged becca after introducing herself. "did he ever get back to you?" the blonde questioned the other blonde, and kailey shook her head. "what?!" she asked before looking over at becca, who nodded in agreement. "i know! he's being an ass." becca said and tessa grinned, she pulled the two by the hand towards the bar. "add it to our tab, the team is paying for everything." tessa mused, and becca didn't need to be told twice. kailey nodded softly and without effort, she saw connor from behind tessa. he was in the middle of a animated conversation with alex, who only grinned when the two of them made eye contact. he lifted his drink, as if to say hi. kailey blushed turning away quickly, and a little too quickly. connor had followed alex's gaze towards the littlest hughes. connor felt heat rush to his cheeks, before looking back at alex who only grinned. "did you get back to her?" alex questioned, drinking a bit. connor shook his head, "well good thing tessa already invited her out a few weeks back." alex mused and connor nodded. "go. ill make talk with somebody else, but just please put yourself out of misery and speak to her." alex said before giving him a subtle push towards kailey. connor rolled his eyes with a small smile, before heading over towards the three girls who were on their way over.

"connor! oh, where did alex go?" tessa nodded and connor pointed over towards his direction. tessa walked off, with becca in tow as kailey stayed in her place. "hi connor." she said with a smile. "hey." he responded, feeling somewhat awkward. "i uh, im gonna go head with them." she said about to step past him, but he grabbed her hand. she looked down at it, before meeting his gaze; which was already directed towards her. she now felt herself blush, "do you want to find a quieter place?" he questioned, and she nodded allowing him to pull her through the crowd and towards the coffee bar, in the next room. he pulled her through, not letting her hand fall from his. once they exited the room, he still didn't let go. the two found a few other couples or dates, in the coffee bar booths and they took the last empty one. "you good with your drink or do you want a coffee?" he questioned, and she shook her head. "im good, but thankyou." she said and he nodded going off to get a small cup of expresso for himself. she sat down in the booth, and texted becca that her and connor went to the coffee bar in case becca needed her for anything.

connor sat back down, as she put her phone on dnd. "so! what have you gotten up to this winter break?" he questioned sweetly, "nothing much honestly. lots of reading and writing, and getting some much-needed quiet time with my parents. just me and them." she mused, sipping her seltzer. "did your brothers come home?" he questioned, and she shook her head no. "nah, my parents though flew to new jersey and i went to vancouver to be with quinn. he was thoroughly surprised to see me." she smiled softly. "my parents surprised me with tickets to go see him since they knew i was pretty bummed, to have not seen him since summer." she said leaning back in the booth a bit. "did your parents come? i know you said your sister was here, already?" she asked and he nodded. "yeah, they flew out with my grandparents. it was really nice to have a few days off with them." he smiled. she nodded, "why didn't you respond to my text today? it seemed as if everything was going fine and then you left me on read." she blurted and he cringed. "i uh..-" she cut him off, "don't lie to me connor please. I've had too many people lie to me in my life and i don't feel like adding you to that list." she said giving him an unenthused look. he'd be sure to ask her about that, later.

"i was nervous." he said and her eyebrows creased, "nervous? what for?" she questioned leaning on her elbows. "i was uh nervous, seeing you person... after getting to know you these past few weeks." he said and she giggled, "i hope its good nerves. hopefully i didn't spook you." she said teasing a bit. he shook his head, "no all good. good nerves because..because I've uh grown feelings for you and despite kevin saying you liked me back, i didn't believe him." he said blushing like a fool. "why don't you believe it?" she questioned with a soft glint of humor. he didn't speak for a second, trying to gauge if she was saying what he thought she was saying. "i like you connor..i thought i was being obvious." she said grinning, and connor shook his head whilst blushing. "sorry mr. number one overall, sorry i didn't just come out and say it. i was trying to be organic about it." she teased, and he laughed. "you can take a breather con, everything is okay." she said taking his right hand in hers, and his breath paused for a brief second at the way she said con. "no i know, i just didn't think there would be any reason to like me." he said and her heart fell, did he really think so lowly of himself?

"hey hey, don't say that. i promise there is much to like about you." she said softly rubbing her thumb with his. "especially beyond hockey, you're.. mysterious in the best and most innocent ways." she said sweetly, taking another sip of her drink. "you're also really easy to make blush, i find that endearing." she gushed as connor rolled his eyes playfully. she was about to say something more, but her phone began to ring. her eyebrows crinkled, flipping over her phone and rolled her eyes.

"yes?" she questioned pulling the phone to her ear. "hey kiwi, i tried texting you but your phone is on dnd and i wanted to make sure you were good." she smiled softly over quinns concern. "yes q, im out with becca and a few friends." she said and caught connor's eye. "where are you guys at?" he questioned, and she chuckled. "were at soho house, why?" she questioned. "just curious, but wanted to say happy new years incase you fall asleep before it rang on my coast." he said. "you're probably right though, about that. but happy new years q ill talk to you tomorrow." she hummed before they hung up.

"sorry quinn was just checking in on me." she said turning her phone off dnd, and then looked up at connor. "very brotherly of him." he mused, sipping the expresso that was just set down. she shrugged, "he does the least amount of 'hovering' so its appreciated from time to time." she said sarcastically. "things still rough with jack?" he questioned, referring to the fight her and jack had just had about him being to engrossed in her life. by that, it meant that jack had been nagging her recently, like he used to do growing up. "i could kill him." she said annoyed, before sipping more of her drink. "he's such a child, its comical." she huffed, shaking her head. connor nodded, "and then luke, oh my god i wanted to tell him off the other day. he just was pushing my buttons, begging me to come for tonight but he just couldn't or didn't want to take the word no." she said pulling a piece of hair behind her ear. he shook his head amused, "laugh all you want bedard." she mused sarcastically. he held up his free hand in innocence as people began to count down from 30. "is it really midnight, already?" she said looking around and saw the coffee bar empty. they were the only two left.

connor looked around and saw exactly what he was looking for to be empty. he stood up and held out his hand for her. she took it, an eyebrow-raising. he then led her over to the photobooth, and she giggled. "seriously?" she asked amused. he nodded, "yeah, didn't you say it was your dream to do one of these? you said it was very, '80's.'" he said pretending to think hardly, causing her to giggle. "yes, very!" she smiled as he sat down first. he then held his arms wide for her, and she smiled feeling herself blush. "i wont bite, i promise." he said and she nodded, stepping and sitting down on his lap. "lets figure out how to do this thing." he muttered more to himself than her, and she then pressed the button on the screen. "like that was hard." she said grinning down at him as the camera went off, then she looked forward doing a fish pout, before looking down at once more. then she wrapped her hand around his face, pulling him closer and pressed their lips together. ofcourse, right as midnight rolled around. they pulled apart only a few inches, resting their foreheads to giggle as they laughed. "i cant believe that just happened." she whispered, peering into his blue eyes. "you're kinda cute from this angle." she teased, "kinda?" he taunted, pinching her sides just a bit causing her to laugh loudly and flying around in his gasp. "stop stop stop! connor!" she said as he tickled her just a bit before the only way she could stop him, was by pulling him in for another kiss.

she pulled away from him, and then hopped out before he could tickle her again. "wait! don't move." she grinned, leaning in the booth. "i want some of just you, so that when you're away i can have you with me, always." she said before pressing the screen to begin, and then shut the blind. all connor could do was smile and chuckle just a bit at her forwardness. the flashes ended, and she quickly grabbed the picture's to inspect them.

she smiled down at them, and connor wrapped an arm around her waist from behind and rested his chin on her shoulder. "you're adorable, connor bedard." she smiled looking over at him. his cheeks flushed, as she put the pictures in her bag. "for safekeeping." she teased, moving a strand of hair from covering his eyes. "anywho. lets go back to our friends." she said now taking hold of his hand, and leading him back to the bar area.

"there you are! we i have to show you something." becca beamed, pulling the young blonde away from connor. she looked back at him before they lost sight of each other.

"where are you taking me?" she said as becca pulled her outside towards the rooftop, and then kailey smiled. the cooler air, traveling up and down her body at rapid speed. her pale body covered with goosebumps as she peered at the fireworks going off at navy pier. becca wrapped an arm around her best friend, "i cant believe that we've only dreamed of this our whole lives." becca gushed, as the two thought back to when they were 7 living in toronto and planned to move to a big city when they were older, and promised to go to the same college together. "who'd a thought?" kailey hummed, thinking back to the last few years, and how she had gotten to this point in her life. "here's to another year of friendship." kailey said sweetly, and becca smiled. "here's to another year of tormenting your brothers." she joked and that made kailey laugh out loud.

"becca! kailey!" they heard tessa behind them, and then they saw some of the younger players come up behind her. tessa smiled taking in the city of chicago, and without notice, connor's hand had found hers as becca moved away from her. she looked up at the taller hockey player, who was already looking down at her. she pulled his hand behind her back, resting her head in his shoulder. she felt his head rest on her's, as the two looked out at the west loop neighborhood.

in the middle of it all, she'd found connor. through all the madness of her life and school, she'd found him. and its most likely safe to say, the same thing for him.

connor could not believe it, and possibly a part of him did not want it to be true. not that he did not like cats, they just were not his favorite animal. he was quite partial to dogs. so when kailey and connor were taking a walk through the loop after a short study session at the depaul library, kailey knew she could not give up this chance encounter. "oh my god con, look!" she squealed as she kneeled, before putting her finger out for the small cat to sniff her. "i don't think you should do that." he said taking a step back. she rolled her eyes, but then smirked as the cat began to brush itself up against kailey. "hi baby." she cooed, and began to pet it. "step on it bedard, get your car." she said not looking up from the black cat. "what?" he questioned, squatting down to her level. she turned back towards him, "im gonna stay here. you go get your car so we can get to the vet." she explained as if it was not obvious. "wait why?!" he asked still confused. "because con, the cat distribution system that I've been waiting for to appear, has happened! i cant give this cat up. look!" she said looking down at the cat. the cat had now taken up her lap as a safe haven, and connor knew there would be no going back now. she was hooked, and godddamit- she was gonna keep that cat.

it was 3 hours later, with a $465 vet visit and connor getting scratched in the room behind them- the two finally settled in on kaileys bed. kailey and connor laid down cuddling together, while the new kitten - notably named crosby laid in front of them in a ball. "i cant believe it happened." she whispered, intently watching the cat's chest rise and fall. "do lukas and kev like cats?" she questioned, absentmindedly. "uh, i don't know. the topic has never come up." he teased, pressing his nose in the nook of her neck from behind. "what if i brought her over tomorrow?" she questioned, and connor smiled. "im sure they would love to meet her." he mused, which made kailey silently cheer. "oh shoot! i completely forgot to let my brothers know." she giggled, pulling out her phone to shoot off a text to their group chat, that the four of them had. not even a minute later, the three brothers were texting like madmen. asking when they could meet her, but at the same time insulting kailey that she got a kitten and not a puppy, and lastly, they wanted to know the name. to which, luke guessed correctly. "what is with crosby?" connor questioned after she put down her phone, and she giggled. then she would not stop giggling, until she realized that baby crosby might wake up, so she stopped quickly. though, connor thought it was all quite amusing.

"as a kid we met crosby before i had a real understanding of who he was, and then was i was like 13 i saw a picture of him and thought he was the hottest man to grace this earth." she said turning around to face connor. "and then i met him again right before jacks draft, and my brothers had to tease me relentlessly about it. completely made a fool of myself in front of him and I've never lived it down to this day." she said as her cheeks turned rosy, which connor found quite darling. "that's adorable." he teased, moving a small piece of hair behind her ear. she pushed two hands to her face to cover herself from embarrassment, "what? it is cute." he said pulling them from her face, and then slowly leaned down to kiss her. but, before he connected the two he teased her a bit more. "though ill be sure to remember that you found him attractive...the next time he's in town." he teased before kissing her.

that kiss didn't last long.

everything that kailey did, annoyed the absolute crap out of jack. luke nor quinn had ever understood why, and jack never wanted to explain why. this christmas in particular was difficult, and missing a cherished member of the hughes family. kailey had been having a difficult time in highschool thus far, her sophomore year with luke. she decided that she was gonna fly up to upstate new york, to get away and be in a different environment. and truth be told, while she was dealing with bullies at school she was also dealing with a bully at home, and could never escape them.

christmas 2018-

it was the day before christmas eve, and quinn had just flown in while kailey was flying out. he got into jims car and he could sense that something was wrong or off, "whats going on dad?" he questioned, nervous that it had to do with kailey. and he was right. "kails went to go visit my folks in upstate new york. she'll be back on the 2nd." he said and quinns eyebrows crinkled. "she's- she's having a really hard time at school and we already know that jack isn't helping. id rather ship him off if he didn't have practice." jim muttered and quinn sighed. "what is wrong with him? I've already spoken to him a lot this summer and he still isn't getting it." quinn said pulling out his phone to text kailey, "you're mom has about had it." jim said getting onto the expressway.

as soon as quinn walked in, he quickly went to go find jack who was with luke downstairs. "what the hell is wrong with you?!" quinn asked turning the tv off. "hey!" both younger brothers exclaimed, and quinn shook his head. "what is wrong with you jack, huh? why do you keep driving kails away!" quinn demanded but jack rolled his eyes, standing up. "no!" quinn said pushing him back on the couch, "tell me right now why our baby sister had to fucking flee because of you!" quinn exasperated, while luke stayed silent. luke knew exactly why.

jack shook his head, "do you not realize how bad it is at school? do you not realize the amount of bullying she gets, for you to only add to it here? what is supposed to be her safe place, is not!" quinn fumed and jack sighed. "if you don't say, i know luke will tell me exactly what i need to know. im giving you a chance to come clean." quinn said standing his ground. jack was silent, "what is it?!" quinn screamed one last time.

jack sighed once more, "its always about her, kailey this kailey that, when is it my turn?" he questioned and by the look on quinns face, you thought he was about to kill his brother. "seriously? you're jealous of your sister? you're jealous of somebody who doesn't play hockey, doesn't skate, plays her own sports and gets bullied? you're jealous of your sister who does whatever she can to blend in? are you stupid?" quinn said angrily. luke rolled his eyes, "he's just upset because mom and dad make sure that they are there for everything of hers. he's upset that she has more freedom, and gets the most support out of the two of us." luke butted in and jack glared at him. "you're an idiot, an absolute buffoon jack. last time i checked, you chose this. you chose to play hockey." quinn said shaking his head. "you are the reason why you guys moved here. she may be upset at that fact, but she's moved on from it. you give her so many reasons to not like you - but shes a better person because she still wants to do right by you. she wants to prove to you that she can be a good sister. do you not realize how much shit she puts up with from you, because she wants you to be her friend at the end of the day? and don't deny it, but i heard about the 'she's literally just a roommate' comment to the boys." quinn finished, before looking at luke. "i expect more from you luke, i expect you to stand up more to this idiot." he finished before walking upstairs to find his mom. he had a plane to catch to new york.

june 2019- nhl draft.

kailey wanted to be anywhere but here. yet, her parents and quinn had convinced her to come to vancouver with the family. kailey would do everything in her power, to not stand out because she couldn't step out of line or else jack would throw a fit. it had been hard the past few months, but she kept assuring herself that she wouldn't have to put up with him for much longer. ellen pulled her daughter into a hug the morning of the draft, as kailey began to sob. kailey had been experiencing anxiety attacks for a while at that point and only her and luke knew about them. this morning she woke up in a panic, as soon as the alarm went off. she called her mom in a panic, from the next room door and she quickly rushed over. "i - i cant do it, i cant i wont i wont." she sobbed into her mom's chest. ellen rubbed her hand over her daughter's back, holding on as tightly as she could. but she knew that if she didn't give jack the attention is so craved, she'd also never hear the end of that. "i cant mom, i cant!" she exasperated, pulling away and sitting down on the bed. ellen sat down across from her on the extra bed, waiting for her daughter to say something. "im sorry, i cant do it. i cant support somebody that tears me down every chance he gets. i literally breathe and he finds an issue with it. im over it, im not making my self physically sick anymore." she said beginning to cry again. ellen and jim could never say or do enough to get him to stop, and none of the boys would say why exactly he had done what he'd done. they'd had it with him, taking away things and grounding him but none of it did a damn thing.

ellen had a sneaky suspicion of what it was, but would not hear the truth for awhile longer.

the family had just finished getting ready and were in jack's suite, filming as well. kailey on the other hand was in her bathroom, sitting on the tile floor puking her guts out. she had made herself so physically ill the whole day, and this was the only way for her body to dismiss it. quinn knocked on the door with luke before walking in, and realized that the room was empty. luke knocked on the door, and he quickly whipped it open when he heard gagging. "oh my god!" he said kneeling down in front of her, pulling her hair back as she puked. she sat back against the bath tub and the boys took in how hollow her eyes were. her skin pale, and exhaustion plagued her features. "whats going on?" luke asked pulling her against his chest. she shrugged, as quinn texted their mom. her eyes began to refill with tears, as luke pulled her in as close as possible. "i cant go. i wont allow myself to." she whispered for only luke to hear. "he doesn't deserve my support, anymore. i cant support somebody who doesn't love me or even like me." she said louder and quinn picked it up. he left the bathroom and room, and headed over to the suit that his parents and jack were in. as soon as he walked in jack smirked, "wheres the drama queen?" he mused, making sure his tie looked good. "she's sick." was all quinn said leaning against the wall next to ellen. ellen looked over at him, and she could tell what she was exactly sick with. "sick? i doubt that. she just needs the attention on her." jack said cockily, and quinn could kill him right there he thought. or, one chance to take a swing at him. "lukes with her?" ellen questioned, and quinn nodded. ellen walked out of the suite and walked over towards kaileys.

luke wiped kaileys tears, and smoothed down her wavy hair with his other hand. she had finally reached the end of her effort, she didn't have it in her to support the brother who always thought of her as less than. her personal bully had won, and was getting rewarded for it that day.

spring 2023- may

quinn looked over at jack, who was busy typing away on his phone. quinn had just gotten back from brunch with kailey in detroit, and he was relieved to see how kailey was doing after her sophomore year of college. she had just gotten back from study abroad and had absolutely adored her time there. she had also spoken about how she was thinking about doing a semester at sea but wasn't exactly thrilled about the cost. but quinn wouldn't hear it, he was gonna make his baby sister as happy as he could, and make up for the lost years.

"listen, youre gonna help me do something for kails." quinn announced, without giving jack a choice. jack looked up from his phone, and gave him a 'wtf' look. "yeah right." jack said, returning to his phone. "no! you're gonna do this with me asshole. you are gonna make up for the lost years. you are gonna do right by kails, and you're gonna do this with me. she deserves to be happy, you didn't see how happy she was today. i haven't seen that big of a smile since we lived in canada man. i haven't see her so content. and you are not gonna fuck this up." quinn explained, and jack set his phone down while sitting up.

"why would i help her? last time i checked she doesn't speak to me or support me." he said like it was obvious. quinn rolled his eyes, "if you weren't so thick in the skull you'd realize just how much she supports you and how much she wants you to be happy. y'know she keeps up with all your stats, and watched games with luke this season. she asks me and luke all the time how you're doing, and whats going on with your life. maybe if you'd give her the time of day, she'd open up to you and she'd show you how much she loves you. these past three years away from you has given her perspective and grace, and you don't deserve any grace. but that's who she is, always looking for the benefit of the doubt and ever the optimistic person." quinn paused, "you're gonna be a nice brother and play the part, and you're gonna do this with me." quinn said not taking no for an answer. "she has no idea that were doing this, so don't give me the "shes gonna expect more of this." but you know deep down that she isn't that person. mom and dad didn't raise her to be that way, so wipe that thought." quinn said with intuition, knowing what was going on in jack's mind.

jack sighed, "what is it for?" and quinn smiled. "semester at sea. she wants to go to europe and asia, for the spring semester. we still have time to pay for it. she got accepted but was gonna decline when she saw the final amount after scholarships and financial aid, etc." quinn said pulling up the email he got from ellen. after he left brunch, he headed over to his parent's house to talk to them. they were more than elated that quinn wanted to do this for her because let's be honest. she deserves the absolute world.

a week later.

"quinn?" kailey called out after stepping into her parents house. she had received a text from quinn if she could meet her there, that afternoon. what she did not expect, was to see jack there with quinn. they two were in the living room, hanging out with everybody. "hey sweetie, come here!" ellen said patting the spot next to her. kailey eyed jack, as she walked over to the couch. he hadn't seen her in three years almost, and she had changed. changed for the better of course. "yes?" she questioned as the family looked at quinn and jack with smiles. "we wanted to do something for you, kails." quinn began. "think of it as a token of our brotherly love." jack said and quinn elbowed him, "you're in on this?" she questioned jack. jack swallowed hard and nodded, "umm." she said not sure how to respond. "here." quinn said standing up and handing her the envelope. it was a confirmation slip for the semester at sea and a flight to europe for docking. she took the envelope, and opened it up slowly. she saw the ticket before the confirmation slip, "oh my god? oh my god!" she said standing up and freaking out. her eyes filled with tears of gratitude, and hugged quinn. "thankyou thankyou thankyou." she said into quinns chest, and the family only laughed in response. "oh my god, i could cry." she said pulling back and looking up at her brother. "don't cry kails, it isn't necessary." he said and she shook her head. "ill repay you guys i promise! it might take awhile after graduation, but ill get there!" she said looking between jack and quinn, but they shook their head. "no! you arent repaying us a dime. we want to do it for you, we have the ability to so you don't need to worry." jack finally spoke up. worry was her middle name when it came to jackson.

"dont worry blondie, you deserve the opportunity to go, so you're going." quinn added and kailey frowned. "alright." she said softly before luke stood up and wrapped his arms around his sister. "you're gonna have to text me every day, send me all the pictures in the world. im gonna have huge fomo." luke mused and quinn second that. "come here." quinn said wrapping his arms around the other side of the girl, and she felt the weight of them. "god ii swear to god if you make me fall over." she said as the two boys laughed. quinn waved jack over, and jack fought with himself. he didn't know what to do. "get over here princess." kailey announced, and jack sighed standing up.

ellen snapped a quick picture of the four's group hug. ellen and jim looked at one another thinking the same thing, they hoped that this was the beginning of a new chapter between kailey and jack. and hoped that jack wouldn't screw it up.

their relationship happened and moved very quickly

kailey hadn't been looking for one just because she'd been fried so many times by her brothers

stayed up to obscene hours of the night just to talk to one another

connor would actually show up many times to the depaul library near his and her apartments, and just sit with her until she was done with an essay, assignment, study etc.

there was an on going joke of, "he doesn't even go here" in her friend group

he helped her study for her finals and midterms, even accessing her quizlet from across the country and continent

he would even proofread her essays just because of how much anxiety she had about them

the month that they become official, he's already planning her trip to Vancouver

wanted to show her anything and everything

she officially went to go support him with becca, the month of february after they started dating

she surprises him with a connor bedard graphic t-shirt she found on etsy

he absolutely adored it

kaily got him onto reading, giving him the, "everybody has a book/genre they like, they just need to find it."

shamelessly will read young adult high fantasy just so she can have conversations with somebody

on his off days, he allows her to wake him up early if she doesn't have class or work, and pulls him to different museums. they absolutely adore the science and industry museum

connor will drop absolutely everything (unless he's across the country/continent) to be there for her if she has a breakdown from stress and/or an anxiety attack. he constantly reassures her that she matters more than hockey

though she hates when he says that, but at the drop of hat he'll be off running out of the practice arena or gym or wherever he may be

the team (minus a few individuals) had no idea until the following season just because some of them were friends with her brothers or at least had been around them in some capacity, and didn't need word to get around

though quinn finds out from Mackenzie entwistle sending a karaoke video of the two singing, "summer nights" or "Paradise Dashboard" two months after they started dating

kailey is definitely one of the bro's but teases them and says she rather hang out with the wags

kailey and connor are apart of a groupchat with a few select younger players on the team with their girlfriends, and its literally just memes being sent back and fourth. nothing substantial arises from it, unless they are finalizing date nights/little get together at an apartment

kailey is unfortunately insecure early in the relationship because she feels like she is inadequate. she especially feels second to others because she doesn't go to the majority of the games or the events the wags put on. but connor won't let her feel bad, he reassures her that her academics are one of the most important things to him. he keeps telling her that all he wants is to watch her across the stage for graduation

he does see her walk across the stage, alongside her brothers and her parents. all three of them taking a day away from playoffs to see her. none of them could miss such a day

it was only a few weeks later, that he breaks up with kailey

and then when the next season rolls around, he gets absolutely trashed by half the league because the hughes bubble is huge.

besides luke, these two are the closest

kailey looks up to him and has always wanted to do right by him

constantly trying to prove herself but does not realize that just by being her is enough

and that he will always be proud of her

when the boys used to play hockey growing up, he would always be on her team, even when jack and luke would complain

he just wanted to protect her from the roughhousing their brothers did and wanted her to have a chance at scoring because we know damn well jack wanted to score 24/7 and so would luke when he was paired with her

he took piano lessons alongside her before she quit (she thought it was stupid- explained a bit in the finale blurb)

she always felt less her siblings because she didn't choose skating or hockey, but quinn has consistently told her and showed her that choosing a non-ice sport was more than okay

reassures her that she chose soccer and lacrosse for a reason, those were her two callings.

when they moved to the states after a stint in canada, even though he was about 30 minutes away in ann arbor for college, he was there to drop her off for her first day of highschool

took her to get a tim hortons hot chocolate on a 85 degree day, but it made her feel more comfortable being in a new place

because he was in ann arbor for two years before going to canada, he was there as much as he could be physically

she had a hard time in highschool with bullies and when he'd hear that she'd had a bad day, he'd come home for a bit or the day and they'd spend time together. just the two of them

when he moved to vancouver to play professionally, it was really hard on kailey

she took it the hardest because her biggest supporter and best friend, behind their parents was going to be further away

though whenever he had a chance, he'd call and text. he even flew her out for breaks through the year so they could spend time together

when she got into depaul, he was on facetime with her and he completely lost it

he was jumping and screaming, and all he wanted to do was give her the biggest hug (which he did once he came home)

throughout her four years, he still constantly checked in, making sure her classes and her friend group were doing well

him and jack paid (generously) for her study abroad and semester at sea, even though she tried protesting

but he wanted to give her every opportunity to explore and study around the world, something he'd wanted to do even though he made the decision to leave for the NHL

when her and connor began to date, he never had an issue with it because he could see how much he loved his baby sister

so when they've been together for about 10 months, quinn ofcourse does his big brother speech when he flies out to vancouver for a game.

connor appreciated it and respected it because of how much kailey talked about quinn, and he knew right away how much she respected her older brother

connor and quinn became thick as thieves at one point

quinn was the first one off of his seat, when she walked the stage at michigan for her graduation

he cheered the loudest, as she waved towards her family

after connor broke up with her right after graduation and while all of her brothers are in the playoffs, he offers to fly her up to him

she declines, but once the season is over he gets a little time to see her before she heads off to california for a few months

definitely doesn't like her being in trevor land but pushes his grief aside for him, to make sure that trevor keeps tabs on the girl

he didn't see her until training camp, when she came to vancouver for a week to visit with him

the two fall back into a familiar and comforting routine, and he's just speechless with how much shes grown over the past few months, understands now- how time, freedom and the sea can do

Kailey x Jack:

as kids they never got really along, they were so alike, it hurt

constantly bickering, butting heads, and hitting each other with hockey sticks

once they got into such a bad fight, ellen had to pry away a skate from kailey because she was about to start running after jack after he called her ugly (be honest, we have all had a dangerous fight with our siblings at one point lol)

yeah, ellen had to put herself in between these two a lot !

jack is somewhat of a sensitive topic for her even to this day, just because after they moved to michigan he wanted nothing to do with her. that's why when they moved, quinn stepped up and tried extra hard and wanted to fill that void a bit

despite kailey being a few years younger than jack, she never let that be an issue

despite them not getting along, they still went to each other things. if not, ellen would throw a fit and call either one of them a 'dummy' if they didn't go (endearingly ofc)

during highschool her and jack rarely spoke to one another, and at one point kailey believed that jack didn't think of her as her sibling. just another roommate

when he left for jersey, she felt like she could breathe a lot more and when she got into michigan, she finally could be herself

during her time at michigan, with luke ofcourse, that's when her and jack started to talk a bit more. just because of how much luke talked to him and quinn.

shed walk into the hockey house, unannounced, and would open his bedroom door without a care in the world and plop down next to him. if she was feeling sad, lonely, bored or just wanted to annoy him- she'd pop on over

while she was at michigan, it didn't take a lot of convincing from quinn to help pay for her study abroad and semester at sea

after a long heart-to-heart with quinn, jack realized how much shit he'd done and believed that this was a peace offering for everything

but kailey doesn't care about how much jack can buy her, she just wants a relationship with him- not his credit card.

obviously when jack finds out about connor, he goes ballistic

he doesn't want her dating him, let alone any guy

he softens up a bit when connor and kailey hit the one year mark

her and jack continue to work on their relationship but its still rockey

then after connor breaks up with her after graduation, jack has to hold his tongue back by not saying, "i told you so." but jack is jack and he says it in his own way

so when she goes off to california, she cuts jack off and the last thing she said to him was 'fuck you'

the two don't really speak to one another until connor comes back into the hughes' life and the two siblings have a heart-to-heart on vacation in europe (finale blurb)

luke would go above and beyond for 'his' kails

they bonded a lot as kids over their anxiety of not fitting into the hughes dynasty

besides quinn, she goes to him A LOT

during highschool he'd walk her to class, wait for her practices to be over if he didn't have practice or he'd come and pick her up so she didn't have to take the bus home or drive with a teammate.

he knew that at some point he'd be leaving for the show too, so he wanted to make as many memories with her beforehand

when she got into depaul while he was a freshman, he was over the moon

he was so ecstatic and excited for her to be with in chicago

the michigan boys fully welcomed her into the hockey family when she visited, and considered her an honorary member of the team

they'd like to joke that they liked her better than luke, which she always rubbed in his face - endearingly ofc

kailey has test anxiety, and so during her first semester, luke and her would spend hours testing her on her courses. he'd even started to read and watch videos on her course subjects, so he could really help her out

while he did this, she helped him on all of his papers- because lets be honest, she's the best writer out of the four

luke goes to her for all of his girl questions, which she loves

her and luke rarely fight, and if they do- it's serious and has been something that has been weighing on each other's minds for a bit

when her and connor got together after new years, luke could tell something was different

she seemed happier and more distant. whenever they were on facetime, it always seemed like her mind was somewhere and sometimes, she'd be in a different location and seemed like somebody was there with her

was not shocked that she had a boyfriend when she told him right after she broke up with connor

he took to connor extremely quickly when they got back together

once they got back together, and before he left for jersey (first breakup was for about 4 months (july-nov)) he would butt in on connor and kailey's facetimes.

he loves seeing his sister be absolutely head over heels for this boy (even if he is a hockey player lol)

he hated seeing her be miserable over that summer

but when connor breaks up up with her, he's absolutely heart broken. he'd considered connor to be a part of the family at that point

and he made it his mission to give connor hell once they played again next season

luke hated seeing kailey leave for california

he's upset that the twins wont be togther anymore ):

and that they wont get their day together, well not in michigan atleast. he'd have to come out to see her

and he did, and that was after her and brendan got together. besides trevor finding out, luke found out by accident but didnt say anything

he realized that once she came out after new years, after her breakup with brendan, that something was different

she was happier, happier than she'd been for a few months

he quickly suspected that she saw a certian someone in chicago for new years

and he didnt have to ask for confirmation and let it be

was happy when connor showed up on their family vacation that summer

he was happy and excited to have his buddy back, even if connor was just an extension of kailey

but basically, if kailey is happy - luke is happy. if shes sad, luke is sad.

luke basically feels everything that kailey does, as if they were truly twins

ellen always said that they were even if they were less than a year apart

despite jack's rocky relationship with kailey, all four of them are extremely close after kailey begins college and finishes it

had a close childhood in toronto and new hampshire, but ofc when they come to michigan it falls apart

ellen and jim are at a loss for words not understanding what happened, but it was hockey that happened :/

the brothers are her best friends and biggest cheerleader

when she got her dream school in chicago for her masters, they were the first one's she called and put on facetime

ellen is kailey's best friend forever

ellen was her biggest supporter with her sport of choices, and was there every game come hell or highwater

ellen made her feel loved and adored when kailey realized early on that iceskates and her do not mix well

ellen did everything in power, i mean everything. made sure she tried every instrument alive, settled on piano before jack called it stupid and therefore, she quit despite quinn joining her

she tried musicals and then realized that she couldn't sing that well, tried dance and gymnastic and realized how bad her balance was and how uncoordinated she was

ellen was beaming when she found soccer and lacrosse, and when kailey came home declaring that she'd found her passion and outlet, ellen and jim were overjoyed

ellen was terrified to let her go off to study abroad and semester at sea, but she promised to call everyday. and it took quinn and jim convincing her that everything would be ok

ellen was the first one in the family to know about to connor, about two months after dating

she came home for spring break and called/texted him all day every day - it was hard for ellen to not notice. she even tried not to pry or make kailey uncomfortable with questions

knew from the very moment she met connor a few weeks later, after coming to visit kailey for the weekend, that he was the one

even after they broke up the first and second time, she knew they'd get back together

and she most certainly knew that her and brendan were never gonna last...call it a mothers intuition lol

treated and treats connor like one of her sons

kailey x jim:

the two bond over everything not related to hockey

one of her biggest cheerleaders

the two even joined a fathers - daughter group when they were in toronto and spent two nights a week, the majority of the time if his schedule allowed (like Girl Scouts!)

growing up, he would in advance take off games for father daughter dances and other special events that she would take part in

jim shows her how every girl should be treated

lays a hard and sturdy foundation for the girl that would rivel any guy in the future

only connor comes somewhat close to it

while she's at school, he pops in and out, making sure to spend an afternoon with her here and there

for valentines day he will either send her flowers or will pick her up for a brunch, and give her flowers there

jim was always there to give her a hug after a long day during highschool

he was always there to take her mind off of it- thats where her love of movies came about

her and jim used to see a movie once a week, no matter what day of the week. it was a way for them to bond and a way for her to get her mind off of school for a few hours. jim defintly sat through some bad rom coms and chickflicks over the years, but he didnt mind as long as his favorite girl (besides ellen ofc) was having a good time
