I tend to jam my yarn scraps into a bag because I hate unnecessary waste

Today I ran out of the last of the teal yarn I needed to complete a lil gift ONE INCH before the end

But in my yarn bag? Like a foot and a half left over of the exact yarn from the hat I made out of it in the first place

last inch finished, yarn scrap bag vindicated FOREVER

fr though you have to write bad poetry. poems are not handed down to you fully formed by god they are things that you have to work on and practice your skill at creating. nobody would expect you to sit down at a pottery wheel and end up with a perfect vase with no practice. it's a skill! art is a learned thing!! you have to make the shitty little pots with dents and marks and your fingerprints all over them in order to get better. and you're allowed to be proud of those first little pots you made too

#yeah maybe they leak or they don't look the prettiest but you literally made them...#people are so critical of their own + other people's amateur poetry in a way that they are not about so many other art forms #when someone starts crochet they are not expected to pop out perfect pieces immediately.#you don't start dance lessons and pull out a perfect pirouette. there's practice to be done and just because it's not physical #doesn't mean it's not a craft that has to be honed. you have to work at it.#and to work at it you have to be kind enough to yourself to let yourself be mediocre or outright bad. you Have to be #it's never a failure because anything you create is Something You Created and therefore a success #but y'know. the philosophy of you have to be prepared to fail. falling is part of getting back up all that #except that bad poetry will never hurt you it will ONLY ever help you improve <3 so keep writing it <3 #you don't have to post it either the attention economy is so evil... keep it to yourself. and if sharing poetry is a thing you want to do #you can always wait until you feel confident in your work to do so. or show the people you love your bad poems.#cause people who love you will see your hard work and love it regardless. y'know?#not poetry

Behold! My very first crochet chic! Thank God for tutorial video! :D

But even with the video (which said this can be done in 15min), I struggled an hour or so. First 15 minutes ALONE went on me trying to get that "magic loop" right and the first and second round since there ALWAYS were too many big holes etc. issues.

Another issue is that my hook was too big. Should had been 5mm but I bought 8mm... :'D So my chick has more holes and is bigger in size than the original in tutorial video.

If I'm honest, the whole "love in every stitch" saying for fiber artists does not apply to me, like. I'm trying to get this fucking hook into stubborn yarn and I'll be stabbing it like it owed me money. Is that love because I hope not 😭💀

#art #crochet #honestly the closest thing i feel to love when crocheting is this feeling that this is bigger than me if that makes sense...#...i think it'sthe feeling of knowing how old the craft itself is and knowing that millions of people have done the same as you...#...millions of people have stabbed their crochet hook into the yarn because it's stubborn but so are you...#...millions of people in the past have sat and devoted their time and effort into all of this...#...millions of people have passed on this knowledge and kept this thing alive...#...and it's the feeling of knowing that humans across millenia aren't THAT different #to our core we are more or less similar - across the ages across the colours across everything. that really comforts and humbles me #have you looked up ancient textiles? because that also sparks these emotions in me #it makes me think about the tupes of people to make the textile but also about who wore it #and so many of them are still beautiful and colourful and it shows you SO MUCH about the people who made them #even the ones that are tattered and faded and stripped of colour still feel beautiful...#...because it has SURVIVED. it is evidence of a people who made it and a people who had technical skills #and THIS is why i HATE HATE HATE the idea that ancient people were just 'dumb' and 'uneducated'#that is so unfair to them and cruel and just. wrong. Now, crochet! First, I impulsively bought a pattern for the rocky horror picture show lips. Then I was like oop, better actually start these before they fall into a cozy little pit I like to call 'shocking lack of object permanence' 😉

This was rough on the hands, and tedious given its size, but damn, it's hard to argue with those RESULTS. I still need to make a little cord to hang it, and it's actually probably going to go in a different room (it was originally intended for this one, but the design concept evolved and edged it out), but it's getting pride of place SOMEWHERE. The level of detail in this thing is insane. By the time I was making the lower row of teeth to just barely peek past the lower lip, I was fully on board with whatever the pattern creator asked me to do. I'll probably never do all that lip surface area again, but I love this to pieces!

A finished project! Fennec Shand is one my favourite characters from the newer Star Wars installments (partly because of the funny name), so this was a delight!

Pattern by ToyGurumi on You Tube - they have MANY great designs inspired by different movies and TV shows - and they're ALL FREE. Definitely recommend checking their channel out. 😃

Visited the Sydney Royal Easter Show today & Look!! The yarn (WOW blend Yzma’s New Groove) I entered into the class for wholly spun & plied on a hand spindle placed 3rd!! Bonus was my crochet handspun made shawl was selected for display. I am so ridiculously happy & proud since I’ve only been doing this craft for a year.
