As we’ve moved father into the post-modern era (about 1970 onwards), which is defined by the increased social emphasis on individualism, communal storytelling has become something… shunned. Past methods of communal storytelling (theatre, music, folktales) have been increasingly privatized since 1970. Because of this, we’ve seen the emergence of fanfiction (specifically slash fiction started by Star Trek fans in the 1970s) and TTRPGs (specifically Dungeons and Dragons and Pathfinder in the late 20th Century), which are both ostracized by the mainstream culture, but are also the only two sources of communal storytelling in the 21st century. TTRPGs are finding more footing in mainstream culture, but because they’ve found footing are becoming increasingly commodified. In this essay, I

Tumblr media
The most transgressive film produced by a major American studio in the 1930s, Tod Browning’s crowning achievement has haunted the margins of cinema for nearly one hundred years. An unforgettable cast of real-life sideshow performers portray the entertainers in a traveling circus who, shunned by mainstream society, live according to their own code—one of radical acceptance for the fellow oppressed and, as the show’s beautiful but cruel trapeze artist learns, of terrifying retribution for those who cross them. Received with revulsion by viewers upon its initial release, Freaks effectively ended Browning’s career but can now be seen for what it is: an audacious cry for understanding and a singular experience of nightmarish, almost avant-garde power.
Tumblr media
The most celebrated and exquisitely perverse of the many collaborations between Tod Browning and his legendary leading man Lon Chaney, The Unknown features a wrenchingly physical performance from “the Man of a Thousand Faces” as the armless Spanish knife thrower Alonzo (he flings daggers with his feet) whose dastardly infatuation with his beautiful assistant (Joan Crawford)—a woman, it just so happens, who cannot bear to be touched by the hands of any man—drives him to unspeakable extremes. Sadomasochistic obsession, deception, murder, disfigurement, and a spectacular Grand Guignol climax—Browning wrings every last frisson from the lurid premise.
Tumblr media
A fantastically atmospheric but rarely seen missing link in the development of Tod Browning’s artistry, set amid his favored milieu of shadowy sideshows and clever criminals, The Mystic provides a striking showcase for silent-era diva Aileen Pringle, who sports a series of memorably outré looks (courtesy of art-deco designer Erté) as Zara, a phony psychic in a Hungarian carnival who, under the guidance of a Svengali-like con man (Conway Tearle), crashes—and proceeds to swindle—American high society. Browning’s fascination with the weird is on full display in the eerie séance sequences, while his subversive moral ambiguity extends surprising sympathy to even the most seemingly irredeemable of antiheroes.

whenever you get the chance, i would LOVE to hear your thoughts on new queer cinema, and your fave movies in the category <3
oooh oooh okay! so new queer cinema describes queer film making during the late 1980s - early 1990s. these films are a direct response to the aids epidemic and are meant to be unapologetically queer and confrontational. you cannot separate these films from the aids epidemic. they challenge narrative, film form, normative ideas about society.
they're meant to be provocative! they were created in a social context of survival, where there was the very real risk that silence would mean the deaths of thousands of people because the prevailing attitudes ranged from indifference to outright glee at the death tolls. they're also joyful! if you've heard of camp, a lot of these films are the definition of it (and they'll give you a good idea of just how badly most of the met gala attendees fumbled that theme a few years ago).
these are a few of my favourites:
Zero Patience (1993): one of the first AIDS musical and delightfully campy. sir richard burton (author of 1001 Nights and creator of an insane theory that people living closer to the equator are gay because of the heat) accidentally became immortal and now works at a museum. he starts creating an exhibit on AIDS and the ghost of gaetan dugas - the flight attendant falsely accused of bringing AIDS to north america - haunts him.
Tongues Untied (1989): directed by marlon riggs, this experimental documentary address the reality of being a black man in america, the hypersexual commodification of black bodies, and the way that homophobia plays out in the context of race. it's very honest and defiant in the face of systematic oppression, celebrating black queer desire.
Paris is Burning (1991): possibly one of the most well known nqc films, documenting the new york ball scene of the early 90s. there's been some controversy about narrative ownership (since the director was not part of the community she filmed) but its an important record of queer history.
The Living End (1992): sometimes called the gay thelma & louise, two men with AIDS go on a cross country roadtrip. along the way their clashing ideologies of respectability vs unashamed defiance come to a critical point.
and these are a few that are on my watchlist:
The Watermelon Woman (1996): directed by cheryl dunye, this film blends reality and fiction as a fictional cheryl goes searching for a actress that played 'mammy' roles in the 1930s, a woman that turns out to be a lesbian named fae richards.
Edward II (1991): you've heard of straight washing? this is the opposite of that. an interpretation of christopher marlowe's play, director derek jarman goes out of his way to highlight the queerness of edward's relationship with piers gaveston. features jarman's frequent collaborator tilda swinton.
Poison (1991): one of todd haynes' more experimental movies, three stories of people violently ostracized by their communities build on themes of marginality, desire, and illness. considered one of the representational movies of the movement. i've actually seen this once, but the image was completely unsynced with the audio so i feel like i haven't actually seen it.

'Turn on the vibrator, there's NEWS.
Whether big or small, young or old: We can, should and MUST all agree on one thing: Andrew Scott is the Short King of the Century. For us, he is one of the true Sexiest Men Alive .
The Irish actor has been omnipresent ever since his role as the "Hot Priest" in the British dramedy "Fleabag", whether in the cinema, on the red carpet, on horny Tumblr or in the form of quotes tattooed on wrists.
It doesn't seem to matter what Andrew Scott does: he does it fantastically, authentically and exceptionally. That's why we're all the more pleased about the news we've received about him this week. Because...
1. Andrew Scott stars in part 3 of Netflix's "Knives Out"!
The Netflix crime thriller "Knives Out" is entering its third round and alongside lead actor Daniel Craig, Josh O'Connor ("The Crown", "Challengers") and Cailee Spaeny, Andrew Scott will also be seen in it. Details of the plot or Andrew Scott's role are not yet known, but it is said to be Benoit Blanc's (Craig) "most dangerous case".
In any case, director Rian Johnson has landed an experienced supervillain in Andrew Scott, as he has already convinced us of his dark side as the evil genius Moriarty in "Sherlock", as Bond villain C in "James Bond 007: Spectre" and most recently as Ripley in the crime series of the same name. We expect a release at the end of this year.
2. Our prayers have been answered: Andrew Scott voices the lead role in an erotic radio play
It's a mystery to me how our society hasn't collapsed under the news: Andrew Scott has recorded a dirty audiobook for us. Just like that. It's called "The Queen's Guard" and is available on the American audio erotica website Quinn . According to the episode tags, you can look forward to "Grinding," "Teasing," "Begging," and "MDom" in the first two episodes, and from episode 3 onwards, you'll get penetration for your ears. Thank you, Jesus.
3. And last but not least: this GIF. It's not new, but it warms our hearts.
*heavy breathing*'

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024) – Review
It’s great to be back in George Miller’s dystopian world of Mad Max. I love the original films from the 70/80s, and I think that Mad Max: Fury Road was one of the best movies of 2015, hence Furiosa was one of my most anticipated films of the year. In preparation for the movie, I re-watched the original 3 films, then saw Furiosa in cinemas and finished with a rewatch of Fury Road.
Tumblr media
Furiosa is a prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road showing the early life of the character and her journey to become Immortan Joe’s war rig driver. The movie is titled ‘a Mad Max Saga’ setting the story in the world but does not feature the Mad Max character.
Anya Taylor-Joy takes on the role as the younger version of Furiosa, originally portrayed by Charlize Theron. She embodies the character showing the growth of the strength, resilience, and strategic cunningness that we know from Fury Road. Taylor-Joy has very little dialogue, but she does give it her all and is captivating none-the-less.
Tumblr media
Anya Taylor-Joy may play the titular character, but this is Chris Hemsworth’s movie. Hemsworth outshines everyone with his manically maniacal Dr. Dementus character, the warlord responsible for Furiosa’s abduction. It’s a different character that we usually see Hemsworth playing, which is refreshing and showcases his range as he rides his motorcycle-pulled chariot across the dunes.
Director George Miller has delivered again with stunning, awe-inspiring visuals, from grand landscapes to the vital vehicle chase scenes with audio to match. This needs to be seen on the biggest screen possible.
Tumblr media
This is where I’m going to deviate from the majority of reviewers. As it’s a prequel to Fury Road we know the destination of the story and character. As exciting as the journey is to get there, there was no tension as nothing was ever at stake. We know Furiosa doesn't die, and we don’t emotionally connect with the other characters, so we are just along for the ride. As an individual film, I don’t think the story lives up to its potential.
However, as a part 1 to Fury Road, it adds depth to Furiosa and the entire dystopian society that has been formed with Immortan Joe at the citadel and the alliances with Gastown and the Bullet farm. The two films work tremendously together as a whole story, but Furiosa doesn’t quite peak as a solo film.
4 / 5 . Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is a very good film, made into a great film when double featured with Fury Road. Don’t waste these epic visuals and sounds on your home entertainment system. This needs to be seen in cinemas.

Pasolini 101
One of the most original and controversial thinkers of the twentieth century, Italian polymath Pier Paolo Pasolini embodied a multitude of often seemingly contradictory ideologies and identities—and he expressed them all in his provocative, lyrical, and indelible films. Relentlessly concerned with society’s downtrodden and marginalized, he elevated pimps, hustlers, sex workers, and vagabonds to the realm of saints, while depicting actual saints with a radical earthiness. Traversing the sacred and the profane, the ancient and the modern, the mythic and the personal, the nine uncompromising, often scandal-inciting features he made in the 1960s still stand—on this, the 101st anniversary of his birth—as a monument to his daring vision of cinema as a form of resistance.

Filmmaking in the Mojave Wasteland
[welcome to another Catherine lore stream of consciousness!]
After the NCR-Legion War, the Mojave Commune became the first center of the resurgent cinema industry of the early 24th century. That post-war filmmaking emerged from the communist Mojave instead of the far more industrialized NCR next door is a bit surprising, but the communist society — which was less repressive than the NCR’s right-wing military junta next door — seems to have encouraged artists to experiment, especially Native artists who had faced repression during the NCR occupation of their lands. Inés de Tijuana (i.e. “Courier Six”) and Vera Dreyfus, two of the first revolutionary leaders of the Commune, took a strong personal interest in the medium, pushing for the planners to channel resources and funding into the development of technologies, like high-capacity holotapes and cameras, necessary for filmmaking.
Since this is the apocalypse, film is in short supply, and holotapes of the capacity needed to store the high-fidelity films that we would recognize are extremely expensive to manufacture. Therefore, the majority of Mojave films are silent films, usually set to musical recordings which are bundled with the films. They rarely last longer than 30 minutes, though in 2302, filmmakers were already experimenting with so-called super-holofilms that lasted over an hour.
Despite the enormous logistical obstacles facing any post-war filmmaker, they do have a substantial wellspring of pre-war films from which to draw inspiration: about 1% of pre-war films are estimated to have survived in a viewable state, mostly in private collections and people’s homes, and several dozen films were available to the Mojave inhabitant of the 24th century. A few theatres in Freeside and the Mojave tribal lands played some of these films (the Mojave theatres used projectors salvaged from Vaults 11 and 19), so children throughout the wasteland grew up familiar with the concept yet unable to contribute their own work to it.
The first post-war Mojave film cameras were developed in 2299. These machines were capable of taking relatively high-definition color footage and saving it to holotapes, but they were enormous, nearly two meters tall, and thus completely immobile. As a result, the actual “motion picture” footage in these films had to be shot in a single location (the Strip had two of these sets, with a third in Freeside). The initial films produced by these studios were essentially tech demos, featuring subtitled interviews, dances, or tribal ceremonies lasting 10 minutes or less, often with spoken Mojave text underlying them were mostly intended to impress economic planners and Mojave elders with the durability of the holotapes. Some of these films had rudimentary audio tracks, consisting of music recorded separately from the film, and directors routinely took the opportunity to speak in indigenous languages like Mojave, Pomoan, and Navajo, rather than English or Spanish. In that regard, they were a rousing success, with flocks of people from towns like Goodsprings, Needles, and Primm traveling to outer Vegas to view them.
After that, the first attempts at films with artistic direction and narratives tended to be war films set during the revolution or the war with the NCR — yet the immobility of the cameras meant that action scenes in the actual battlefields were impossible to shoot. Therefore, these films tended to center on the experiences of civilians, such as the victims of bombardments and massacres, the bereavement of loved ones, and political agitation during and after the revolution. The majority of directors and actors were indigenous Mojave people, and the free hand given by the new government allowed them to experiment with highly politically charged and controversial content. For instance, the controversial 2302 war film “Don’t worry about these green eyes” shocked audiences for its final scene, in which the protagonist's corpse, lying in the open in the sand near Nipton, fades out and is replaced by a still of the actress, in her bed at home, lying in the same position. Even aside from the rumor that the immolated corpse seen in the 40-minute film was an actual person killed in action (it was actually a prop made of papier-mâché), the film was widely seen as offensive for its graphic portrayal of a young, traumatized, yet idealistic woman suffering a brutal and senseless death in battle — until Inés de Tijuana, who was a veteran of the NCR-Legion war, personally insisted that the film be officially released, and spoke on its crew’s behalf. Nevertheless, the film earned acclaim as a technical marvel, for its use of photographs from the desert interspersed with live-action footage.
All in all, post-war films, with their frankness and themes relatable to post-apocalyptic people, rapidly became as popular as pre-war ones. With the prevalence of Native filmmakers and actors, they have also contributed greatly to the continued vitality of the indigenous languages of the American Southwest.

Listening Task II - Dummy Head Microphone
Tumblr media
Dummy Head microphones are used in binaural recording, the dummy head or mannequin is built with a matched pair of omnidirectional microphones between the pinna (ear), fully capturing all of the audio frequency adjustments or head-related transfer functions (HRTFs) that recreate the impression of the head shadow, giving the listener a full spatial binaural effect as if being in the same room as the recording or instruments. This sound localization generates Inter-aural Time Difference (ITD) and Inter-aural Level Difference (ILD) that happen organically as sound wraps around the head and is molded by the form of the outer and inner ear. (Minnaar et al. 2001)
Tumblr media
The most notable and first commercially released album that implemented the binaural recording technique using a dummy head microphone was Lou Reed's 1978 Album Street Hassle. Recorded in Germany and New York in 1977, the album featured both live and studio recordings that were recorded solely using dummy head microphones. The critically acclaimed record had mixed reviews as binaural recording does not translate correctly over loudspeakers and it was received as somewhat of a novelty for headphone listeners, however, it promoted binaural recording in the music industry and more artists have adopted the technique.
The dummy head microphone is not very popular due to the price of the equipment and considering that most people like to listen over loudspeakers. But the rise of 3D cinema, virtual reality, and ASMR videos has exponentially increased the demand for binaural recording equipment such as the dummy head and has gained a lot more attention in recent years.

This sensual and striking chronicle of a disappearance and its aftermath put director Peter Weir on the map and helped usher in a new era of Australian cinema. Based on an acclaimed 1967 novel by Joan Lindsay, Picnic at Hanging Rock is set at the turn of the twentieth century and concerns a small group of students from an all-female college who vanish, along with a chaperone, while on a St. Valentine’s Day outing. Less a mystery than a journey into the mystic, as well as an inquiry into issues of class and sexual repression in Australian society, Weir’s gorgeous, disquieting film is a work of poetic horror whose secrets haunt viewers to this day.
Pre-order Picnic at Hanging Rock.
