wada sez: If your memory of the Sunbow cartoon is basically limited to The Transformers: The Movie, you might be forgiven for thinking this strip is trying to explain why she’s absent from the film, by saying that she dies on this mission or something! But that’s not the case; she continues to show up alive and well in the third season of the cartoon, and Lunsford says: “Never intended this to be the last time Carly left, only the first time she went away for an extended period of time. Plus I wrote it to show that this was what inspired Daniel to be as brave as he is. For a kid who went through as much as he did with his parents probably off on dangerous missions, he only ever cried when Prime died during the U.S. series. Headmasters is another story though.... Oh, and Carly, Spike, and Danny all lived happily ever after, or so I would assume.” Smith’s artwork here is extremely distinctive, actually made by cutting up colored card into the shapes! The preview panel below gives you a better look at this remarkable style.

Holiday in the Vineyards (2023)

"Is everyone a sexy wine spy?"

That's my favorite quote from this whole movie. I'm going to be up front here, this movie could not keep my attention. I started and stopped it several times before making it all the way through. Also, the ending did not pack the punch I felt like it needed to.

Carter Baldwyn (Josh Swickard) is the playboy son of Margo Baldwyn (Eileen Davidson), CEO of Baldwyn Wines. Margo is sick of Carter's immature and reckless behavior, so she sends him on a mission to Los Santos to get information about the Huckabee Farms Vineyard that is for sale there, but she doesn't want anyone to know he's there representing Baldwyn Wines because she doesn't want to end up in a bidding war. So, Carter shows up in a tiny yellow Fiat with no plan or backstory ready and meets Valentina Espinoza (Sol Rodriguez) in the middle of a sales pitch. He pretends to be a tourist, so he leaves and meets her sons Santiago (Carlos Solórzano) and Fernando (Julian Rangel) and plays with them until Valentina comes out. Carter makes up some story about why he is in town and says he's staying at a motel. Valentina says the motel is pretty rough, but since he's a carpenter (per his fabricated story), he can stay in her guest cottage and fix it up for her while he's there as rent (she already bought the supplies for it, so he doesn't have to do that). Carter agrees because Valentina is the realtor selling the vineyard but also maybe the owner? That was confusing to me.

Anyway, during Carter's stay, he meets Moe Walker (Omar Gooding) from the hardware store who offers to help him with the renovations. Also frequently around is Valentina's best friend Cindy (Carly Jibson) who is frankly the only interesting character in this movie. Through context clues, we find out that Valentina and Cindy met because their late husbands were going through cancer treatment at the same time, which is actually very cool and interesting, but no, let's worry about the wine. Ugh. So Carter bonds with everyone and learns about the local garagiste community in Los Santos and falls in love with all of it. He tries to talk Margo out of making a bid for the vineyard, but unfortunately for him, he already gave her the information she needed.

The lead actor was in another movie about buying a vineyard that I watched in previous years (I want to say 2 years ago, but it could have been longer) so is that the only character he plays? Rich playboy looking to buy a struggling vineyard? I'm not a big wine drinker, so the wine aspect generally does very little for me anyway. I did enjoy the music, though it's not super noticeable. I do think the lead actors had chemistry because they're both ridiculously hot, but I wouldn't say that this movie allowed for anyone to show off any acting skills of note. Overall, 2 stars.
