Current state of mental health care in the UK: On the third and fourth of six (6) sessions I'm allowed of free counselling (that I've waited months to begin) my counsellor started trying to shove pseudoscience down my throat while calling it "science" (see: law of attraction, vagus nerve theory).
The kicker? My counsellor recommended me an American positive affirmation YouTube channel with the key selling point that the YouTuber "cured her own cancer with mindfulness". I mean, I was just too stunned to respond. Not like I've had family and friends die or receive terminal diagnoses of cancer over the last few years /s
There's only 2 sessions left but she seems adamant I have to listen to these YouTubers with a spiritual bent before she will introduce me to any other new resources.
I shouldn't complain because she has genuinely been helpful in other areas. It's just - I can't afford private mental health support and have to put up with things that make me uncomfortable to get a scrap of support.
Wondering what I should do in this situation. Wait it out or risk conflict by speaking my mind?

For Vicky
You are a warrior,
You thought us,
How to stand up,
Say it's not good enough,
Not good enough.
With humour,
Dignity,
Quiet trust,
She communicated,
With truth,
Honesty,
Beautiful Dignity,
She stood up,
For thousands,
Millions of women,
She fought,
Tooth and nail,
And broke the silence,
Inflicted by the state,
She was so brave,
In sickness,
Illness,
Fought,
Battled on,
Never shook,
Or fell,
She walked through,
Hell,
With a smile.
She went to funerals,
Or those lost,
Saw her future in the coffin,
Never once thought not,
To continue to fight.
She took on the HSE,
The state,
The devil himself,
And she fought tooth and nail,
To end people's pain,
While she suffered herself,
Giving time and love,
Endlessly.
A bed of heaven to you now Vicky,
An angel among hell,
Rest now my darling,
Your pain has come to an end,
You'll be remembered,
And loved,
Forever and a day more,
We will tell stories of you,
Legend of you,
Warrior of you,
We will never tire to talk,
About brave you were,
A inspirational figure,
Someone to guide the light,
A hero,
We'll miss you forever and a day more.

Understanding Cancer Treatment Counselling and Its Benefits
Introduction
Research indicates that over 40% of cancer patients experience anxiety or depression following their diagnosis. If you or a loved one is facing this challenge, cancer treatment counselling could be incredibly beneficial.
What is Cancer Treatment Counselling?
Cancer treatment counselling involves engaging with a counsellor to navigate the psychological and emotional stress associated with a cancer diagnosis.
People react to cancer diagnoses in various ways; while some may remain relatively stress-free, others may experience significant anxiety. During treatment, both patients and their families may struggle with negative emotions. In such times, speaking with an external counsellor can provide long-term benefits and offer a fresh perspective on managing the situation.
What to Expect from Cancer Treatment Counselling?
Counselling can enhance your understanding of your condition and improve your ability to manage treatment. Here’s what you can expect:
Explore Treatment Options: A counsellor will discuss various treatment options, including surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and immunotherapy, helping you make informed decisions.
Holistic Understanding: Gain a better grasp of your condition and its symptoms, making it easier to manage side effects.
Emotional Support: Address psychological concerns and reduce anxiety related to your diagnosis and treatment.
Boost Self-Confidence: Tackle issues like body image, sexual concerns, and intimacy, enhancing your self-esteem.
Moral Support: Receive continuous guidance and support, helping you remain calm and manage your condition effectively.
Empowerment: Counselling can help you feel more in control of the complex aspects of cancer care, such as tests, treatment plans, and finances.
Resource Building: A counsellor will connect you with resources and support networks, aiding in rebuilding your personal and professional life alongside your treatment.
How Does Cancer Treatment Counselling Help?
Builds Awareness: Understand different cancer types, treatment options, and your specific diagnosis and staging. Discuss risks, benefits, and potential side effects with your counsellor.
Emotional Support: Manage fear, anxiety, and uncertainty, and address body image and self-esteem concerns. Learn strategies to handle stress and emotional distress.
Practical Assistance: Get help with logistics, such as appointment scheduling and transportation. Receive referrals to support services, including financial aid and community resources, and advice on maintaining a healthy lifestyle during and after treatment.
How Does a Treatment Counsellor Contribute to Your Treatment Plan?
A treatment counsellor will help you develop and implement a comprehensive plan that includes:
Education: Informing you and your family about treatment options, medications, diets, exercise, and lifestyle changes.
Awareness: Highlighting potential side effects, symptoms, and complications.
Healthcare Navigation: Enhancing your understanding of the healthcare system and insurance, if applicable.
Preventive Care: Advising on tests and screenings to prevent future relapses.
Supportive Care Plan: Creating a care plan to enhance your quality of life, offering tips to boost immunity.
Personal Connection: Building a strong rapport with you and your family to foster a supportive environment. Tailoring counselling sessions to your needs and collaborating with other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive care. Advocating for your rights and preferences in treatment decisions.

What are Fibroids?
What are Fibroids? Part 2 (Wound Healing)
Fibroids are muscular tumors that grow in the wall of the uterus (womb). Another medical term for fibroids is leiomyoma or just “myoma”. Fibroids are almost always benign (not cancerous). Fibroids can grow as a single tumor, or there can be many of them in the uterus. They can be as small as an apple seed or as big as a grapefruit. In unusual cases they can become very large. This Fucking Year update: got results back from neurology saying the scans came back clear, which, on the one hand yippee hooray for not having brain tumours, but on the other does leave me in the slightly strange position of like. schrodingers epilepsy?
you don't get a diagnosis off a single seizure (bc depending on risk factors there are decent odds you never actually have another one) so I'm just gonna be over here chilling hoping I don't collapse out of nowhere again, because never knowing for sure is actually the good answer here :/

Supporting A Loved One 101
Sometimes silence is welcome.
The trauma of an adverse medical diagnosis such as cancer brings an awkward wordlessness because it feels like there are no words to describe what happened. There are not enough words to describe what is on in one’s mind, emotions or body. In a single moment, life changes forever.

Beyond the Diagnosis: Living Life to the Fullest After Cancer
The journey after a cancer diagnosis is a profound and life-altering experience. While the initial shock and fear may be overwhelming, it’s essential to recognize that life does not end with a diagnosis. In fact, for many survivors, it marks the beginning of a new chapter filled with hope, resilience, and the determination to live life to the fullest.
Understanding Life Beyond Diagnosis Embracing the Present Moment One of the most significant lessons cancer survivors learn is the importance of living in the present moment. The uncertainty of the future teaches us to cherish each day and find joy in simple pleasures.
Shifting Perspectives A cancer diagnosis often prompts a shift in perspective, leading survivors to reevaluate their priorities and focus on what truly matters in life. It’s a reminder to let go of trivial concerns and embrace what brings genuine happiness and fulfillment.
Physical Recovery and Wellness Importance of Physical Activity Regular exercise plays a crucial role in the recovery process after cancer treatment. It helps rebuild strength, improves mood, and reduces the risk of recurrence. Whether it’s walking, yoga, or swimming, finding an activity that suits your abilities can make a significant difference in your overall well-being.
Nutrition and Diet Maintaining a healthy diet is essential for supporting the body’s healing process and reducing the risk of cancer recurrence. Focus on incorporating plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins into your meals while minimizing processed foods and sugary drinks.
Managing Treatment Side Effects Many cancer treatments can cause side effects such as fatigue, nausea, and pain. It’s essential to work closely with your healthcare team to manage these symptoms effectively and improve your quality of life during and after treatment.
Emotional Well-being Dealing with Fear and Anxiety Fear and anxiety are common emotions experienced by cancer survivors. It’s essential to acknowledge these feelings and seek support from loved ones, support groups, or mental health professionals to navigate through them.
Seeking Support from Loved Ones and Professionals Building a strong support network is crucial for emotional well-being. Surround yourself with friends, family, and healthcare professionals who can provide encouragement, understanding, and guidance throughout your journey.
Rediscovering Purpose and Meaning Reflecting on Life Goals A cancer diagnosis often prompts individuals to reevaluate their life goals and priorities. Take the time to reflect on what brings meaning and purpose to your life and pursue activities that align with your values and passions.
Exploring New Passions and Hobbies Engaging in new hobbies and activities can be a source of joy and fulfillment after cancer treatment. Whether it’s painting, gardening, or volunteering, exploring new interests can help you rediscover your sense of identity and purpose.
Building a Supportive Community Joining Support Groups Joining a cancer support group can provide a sense of belonging and connection with others who understand what you’re going through. Sharing experiences, offering and receiving support, and exchanging practical tips can be incredibly empowering.
Connecting with Others Who Understand Connecting with other cancer survivors can provide a unique form of support and validation. Online forums, social media groups, and local community organizations offer opportunities to connect with individuals who share similar experiences and challenges.
Celebrating Milestones Acknowledging Achievements, Big or Small Every milestone achieved in the journey beyond cancer diagnosis deserves to be celebrated. Whether it’s completing treatment, reaching a personal goal, or simply getting through a difficult day, take the time to acknowledge and celebrate your achievements.
Finding Joy in Everyday Moments Finding joy in everyday moments is key to living a fulfilling life after cancer. Whether it’s savoring a cup of coffee in the morning or watching a beautiful sunset, cultivating a sense of gratitude for life’s simple pleasures can bring immense joy and contentment.
Mindfulness and Mental Health Practicing Mindfulness Techniques Mindfulness techniques, such as meditation, deep breathing, and visualization, can help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. Incorporating these practices into your daily routine can promote emotional well-being and enhance your overall quality of life.
Prioritizing Mental Well-being Taking care of your mental health is just as important as caring for your physical health. Make time for self-care activities that bring you joy and relaxation, whether it’s reading, spending time in nature, or connecting with loved ones.
Creating a Fulfilling Lifestyle Setting Boundaries and Saying No Learning to set boundaries and say no to things that drain your energy and time is essential for creating a fulfilling lifestyle. Prioritize activities and relationships that bring you joy and fulfillment, and don’t hesitate to say no to those that don’t align with your values and priorities.
Balancing Work and Personal Life Finding a balance between work and personal life is crucial for overall well-being. Prioritize self-care, leisure activities, and spending time with loved ones to prevent burnout and maintain a healthy work-life balance.
Maintaining Hope and Resilience Cultivating a Positive Mindset Cultivating a positive mindset is essential for maintaining hope and resilience in the face of challenges. Focus on gratitude, practice self-compassion, and surround yourself with positive influences to nurture a resilient outlook on life.
