Kirishima's Mystique: Weapon XXX-23

Canada, the great white north, a vast wide little land consisting of regions such as Toronto, Ottawa and Quebec. Currently within the serene wildness of the Canadian rockies, our resident Red Riot and his cotton candy link Alien Queen were having themselves a little camping trip. Nothing said summer fan like gong hiking around a different country as the sturdy and acidic pair were busy setting up shop. Oh come on, you really think I’m gonna go into details about how the battle went?

Yeah I thought so, we all know what you’re all really here for so let’s get this show on the road, shall we? After the ragtag renegade band of villains were rounded up followed by some questions and statements with local law enforcement, the red and pink duo were soo back in their camp now with the added company of their new friend they'd saved. A young girl by the name of X-23, or Laura as she found most preferred to call her and to say her lifestory was complex and tragic was an understatement. But she wasn't one to dwell on the past, least compared to how she was then compared to now though it could be hard to tell with how calm, composed and stoic she was.

But she proved to be willing to try and socialise and it helped that Kirishima and Mina had a natural friendliness and affability about them that made them easy to like. You had been on the road with your best friend Tyson for a few days now. Your ultimate goal was to end up in Banff, but your trip to get there was very spontaneous and you were just going to see what happened. While the drive from St. Albert (I hope that's still where his family lives lol) to Banff technically was only about a four hour drive, you had been on the road for days. He drove you to the Rocky Mountains and that's where you planned on making your way down to Banff. You stopped frequently to go hiking and explore the little mountain towns and then crashed in a nearest hotel for the night or once you had even spent the night in the car. Not the most comfortable night, but definitely the most fun. He had brought his ukulele and you spent a long time coming up with your own songs. It was an especially intimate night you shared, one that really brought all of your feelings for him to the surface. But not wanting to ruin the moment, you kept your mouth shut like you had been doing for the last few years.

Since he didn't live close to you for most of the year and you were only able to visit him every so often you were fine managing your feelings towards him, but every time you saw him, especially now sitting in such tight quarters, they just floated right back up to the surface.

You stopped at a grocery store for sandwiches and snacks and off you went again. Keeping up with Tyson was usually difficult, but since he was tired from the season, you had no trouble staying beside him.

"I think I wanna move here," you said, taking a bit of your sandwich, when you paused to take a break. You had stopped at a spot that gave you a perfect overview of the lake below you surrounded by mountains and trees.

"It is beautiful here," he agreed. "I'm surprised you haven't complained yet. I've never seen you so active."

"Hey!" You punched him lightly in the arm. You were both laughing. You paused for a moment, then spoke again. "I'm just happy to spend time with you."

"Me too," he said wrapping an arm around you and pulling you close. He kissed the top of your head, like he always did, and even though your heart ached for him, you knew he didn't mean it that way. You pulled away quickly, taking another bite of your food to distract yourself. "I am happy you're here. I really needed this."

You nodded, understanding where he was coming from. "You're happy there though, right?"

"Yeah, I'm happy there." He brushed his curls out of his face. "Wish you were there though."

"Doesn't everybody?" You tried to joke, but it probably didn't come off like you intended. For how long have you wished you lived closer to him? Lived with him.

You both laughed awkwardly, as you could feel the mood change. Then you jumped up and started packing your food away. "Uhm. Let's keep going."

He did the same and followed your steps closely. But you didn't get very far before you felt his big hand wrap around your forearm and spin you around. You landed right on his chest and before you knew it his lips were on yours.

Frozen, you didn't react while his lips were still touching yours. Oh god. He was kissing you. He was kissing you.

"Now you know how I've felt these past few years."

"I'm sorry. I never meant to put you through that." He kissed you. And again. And a third time. "Can you forgive me for my brain just lacking?"

You nodded before he even finished asking his question. You wanted him and never once blamed him for anything. Desperately, you went in for another kiss with your arms wrapped around his neck.

"Wow, hold up," Tyson pulled back before your lips made contact. "I realized I just told you that I loved you. Isn't that a bit too soon?"

Markstrom asked himself just one question when deciding to waive his no trade clause to join New Jersey

When the Calgary Flames had a deal in principle agreed to with the New Jersey Devils in place there was only one person left to sign off on it: goaltender Jacob Markstrom. The 34-year-old goaltender has a No Movement Clause built into his contract and he was the marquee piece of the trade.

So, when Markstrom was asked to waive that clause, he had to ask himself just one question to sign off.

“You look at the hockey perspective, and it’s like, do you feel like the team can win? And when that's a yes, everything else comes pretty easy,” Markstrom said from his home in Sweden. “When (Calgary) agreed on this deal with New Jersey I was super excited to start this journey.”

This journey will be filling a much-needed role as the Devils’ No. 1 goaltender. General Manager Tom Fitzgerald publicly identified goaltending as the area of his team as his top player priority in the off-season. He was going “big game hunting.”

Well, that hunt is over, and the prize is Jacob Markstrom.

“Tom really made a push for me,” he said, “And, you know, when somebody wants you to come play with that team, it makes you feel good. And it doesn't take much more than that, for me to get excited and want to jump on the ship and be a part of it, and hopefully sail it in the right direction.”

Whatever analogy you want to use, be it a journey or jumping on the ship, Markstrom will play a big part in taking the Devils to their next level. Markstrom brings solidity to the position that has been a rocky road for the Devils the past couple of seasons and with that, he understands the pressure that comes along with it.

“My position, it's important, goaltending is important,” Markstrom said, “You know, the pressure I have on myself is every time you lace your skates up, you want to win the hockey game, you want to be the difference maker, which as a goalie, you have a chance to do that every night.”

In 48 starts last season for the Flames, he had a 2.78 goals against average and .905 save percentage, his best year came in 2022 when he finished the year in second for the Vezina Trophy as the league’s top goaltender, off a season of a career-high 37 wins and a career-best 2.22 GAA and .922 save percentage.

Markstrom believes there’s another level to his own play and that New Jersey will be the opportunity to watch his game flourish.

"It is a great challenge for me," he shared. “I want to get pushed, I want to get challenged, to perform my best and I think my best will come out of this for sure.”

Markstrom's best is what the Devils will need from him as their big off-season acquisition. After falling short of expectations in 2023-24, there will be plenty of pressure on the team to demonstrate a quick turnaround, especially with one of the roster’s most vital needs now filled with the 6-foot-6 Markstrom. He will join Jake Allen, acquired at the 2024 Trade Deadline, as the veteran goaltending duo to shoulder the pressure.

And that’s just fine with the big Swede.

“It's a big team with a high expectation and as a goaltending position, there is pressure on goaltending,” he said, “I've been on teams in Canadian markets, a few of them so, I know what's expected and you know, me as a person too, people that know me know that I just want to win hockey games. And when we don’t win I'm the hardest (critic) of myself, so I'm just super happy and stoked about that going (to New Jersey).”

Markstrom will spend the next few months in Sweden, before making the trip to New Jersey roughly a month before training camp opens on Sept. 18 to settle in his new environment. Although he doesn’t know anyone on the team, other than training with Jesper Bratt a couple of off-seasons ago, he’s already exceedingly excited to be a part of the group and what Fitzgerald has been intricately building.

“Me and my family couldn't be happier,” Markstrom said, “Obviously they really wanted me to come and it's, you know, it's always exciting to join a group and a team in an organization like New Jersey Devils.”

“I can’t wait to make my home.”

Chapter 7 of Aurora Borealis was supposed to be out today but… I got lost in the Canadian Rockies. Safe to say that cell reception was not great, and what brief moments of connectivity I had were spent trying to find a way out of the hell Google maps led us into. My poor 2013 Toyota Corolla is begging to be put out of its misery… this road trip has been at least 3000 miles so far and this car is struggling.

they’re canadian but they still have their accents so they argue about how to say z and talk about how warm it feels in -10 celsius weather . scar takes off his toque and grian proceeds to tease his awful hat hair while his glasses literally start condensing from the cold air

scar watched a bunch of american tv shows and grian almost exclusively watched winnie the pooh and peppa pig and that’s why they have the accents they do <3<3 they wear t-shirts and shorts when it’s -14°C. the get excited about -5°C in march <3<3 grian has a habit of stealing scars toques even when scar buys them matching ones <3<3

they remind each other to plug in their vehicles when it goes below -20°C. scar knows how to calculate celsius into fahrenheit very quickly and always does it to annoy grian. grian to combat this, almost always says the temperature in either kelvin or rankine <3<3

they both make fun of the province of quebec because it is their right as canadian citizens and have alberta rat control propaganda posters on their wall. they once took a road trip through saskatchewan just to make sure it was still flat (spoiler alert, it was). they made sure to gas up on alberta’s side of lloydminster so that it was cheaper <3<3

they go to the rocky mountains every now and then, not because they like mountains but because they want to see if they can win a fight against a mountain goat (spoiler alert, they cannot). they have never encountered one but one time the saw a moose and finally had a shred of common sense and hid in a bush until it was safe and clear <3<3

scar wants a pet polar bear, grian tries to tell him how dangerous it is. they go to churchill, manitoba (the polar bear capital of the world) to see an actual polar bear. this only spurs scar on <3<3
