This was the first time I briefly talked about the infamous Jib con. But 2016 was different because I think she blamed herself for leaving the 2015 British con early and is still traumatize that she nearly lost Jared few days later, so Gen agreed to let Jared drag bring her to Jib con. Men don’t like wives/girlfriends homing in on their bro times and Jensen was noticeable irritated that Jared’s wife was there and during the closing ceremony Jensen used air quotations marks while talking about Gen’s marriage to Jared who had his arms wrapped around her. He looked peeved at Jensen and then then laughed it off because what else could he do on stage?

(Side note: it’s not easy for men to find male friends and keeping them.  I hated the movie I love you, man because it was too familiar, and Paterson made me uneasy because Adam Driver's character has no male friends and he's more than okay with that because he has a wife.)

Jensen seems "meaner" not just to Jared but to every actor there, especially Misha. At these fan-run conventions, there are no "scripts" (guidelines actually) to follow. Most actors were still going by the guidelines from corporate-run conventions when they're on stage, but not Jensen because it's part of his upmanship as a way to both bond and dominate others. It's a Ryan Seacrest and Brian Dunkleman type situation. Maybe Jensen learned this trick from Ryan who used to be his roommate. Misha is not a natural improviser, his guest appearance on Whose Line Is it Anyways shows that, so he's the least apt at handling Jensen's off script moments. Half the time Jensen wasn't actually drunk but acts like it to avoid the inevitable asinine Destiel-loaded questions from the hellers in the audience.

Jared's strategy was about the same at pre-2016 JIB cons and CE cons because he's pretty apt at smoothing things over between Jensen and the fans. At the infamous 2013 New Jersey con a self-claiming bisexual girl tried to ask Jensen a loaded Destiel question and he snapped at her with, “don’t ruin it for everybody” and Jared immediately calmed Jensen down and salvaged the rest of the experience for sane fans.

Stuff like this is closer to their real life dynamic as the Giver and the Taker. If you read the "codependency tag", Jared the Giver cleans up the messes the Taker make. Givers think they're helping but they're actually enabling and don't improve things. Jensen's reputation took a slight hit, and it took a few years for the New Jersey con to be memory-holed. Apparently Jensen didn't learn from this and 3 years later mocked a girl wearing a "Destiel is real" shirt at the 2019 JIB. Misha told Jensen to not “fight with fans” and Jared was gesturing to a fan in the front row as if saying don’t look at me look at him. SONIC 3 POST CREDITS THOUGHTS

Spoilers obviously…

So as we now know, Metal and Amy are confirmed for Sonic 4. As an Amy fan, I am thrilled that we FINALLY get to have her in the movies, albeit rather late into the movie franchise. I wanted to talk a little bit about what we are seeing in this scene, as well as some of my hopes for Amy Rose’s movie portrayal.

As we can see, Amy’s combat seems like it will be different from her game self. Whereas game Amy uses her hammer and relies on her physical strength to defeat enemies, it seems like movie Amy will have some extra abilities with her hammer. In a way it seems to work like Thor’s hammer, where she can use it as a projectile against multiple enemies and summon it back.

Amy’s origin is that she uses her tarot cards and they basically tell her she will meet Sonic. This was something about her that had kind of been forgotten with Sega, up until recently. In Frontiers, Sonic make a few references to Amy and her fortune cards, and Amy actually uses them in the DLC. Some of her attacks also involve the cards.

It seems like in her portrayal, she will probably have some sort of magic, as we can see she appears to be able to float (or maybe she just jumped but it looks like floating to me). She very clearly has some combat experience and it’s interesting that the first time we see her, it’s a lot like Tails where it seems like she’s specifically trying to find Sonic. My prediction is that she will probably explain that she used her cards to find him, which is a nod to Sonic CD.

In terms of her seemingly having some sort of magical powers, I kind of have mixed feelings on that. I feel like part of what made Amy special is that she never really had special abilities the way others in the main cast do, but yet she’s still able to hold her own and be a hero in her own way. She’s also extroverted and kind hearted, which is why she’s able to so easily make friends and connect with others. I’m honestly scared that they’ll tone down those parts of her character just to make her more visibly “flashy.”

Her design is kind of perfect imo. At least, her face and hammer is. Im hoping she’ll have a similar outfit to her modern one under the cloak. It looks like they actually took a lot of Amy fans headcanons about her appearing in the cloak and decided to actually make that a reality. I’m sure the original fan who came up with that is gonna freak out when they see this.

As happy as I am for her appearance, I can’t help but feel very nervous for how her personality will be, especially when she has a reputation of being butchered. I really hope they don’t go the route of “girl character is stronger than the boy characters,” as that imo is actually more offensive than progressive. I am a woman btw so I think I’m allowed to have this opinion lol. A female character doesn’t have to be this overpowered character that is stronger than her male counterparts to be strong. I feel suggesting otherwise only implies that girls/women can only be alongside boys/men if they can prove to be better than them. That is simply not true. They can be equals. They can be strong in their own way. Amy does not have to prove anything to the Wachowski boys or to the audience. She is canonically strong and can fight. She is bubbly, she is kind, she is a romantic, she can be hotheaded, she is girly, and she is STRONG. All those things can and SHOULD coexist in her character. I don’t need her to be mellowed out into a stereotypical “I’m a girlboss who doesn’t need help from men” character. Amy’s crush on Sonic is important to her character because it shows that love is not a weakness, it can be a strength just as much as anything else.

My biggest ask for her character is to just LET AMY ROSE BE AMY ROSE.

hot take but I think Jeffery was one of the most interesting characters in class of 09. For some reason he’s actually my favorite even tho the other ones are cool too- the girls not the boys lol. Despite the fact that he’s my fave- I do not defend Jeffery or his actions. He’s a problematic fave. (So is anyone in this game tho, even the girls lol) so here’s some reasons why he’s interesting to me

-hidden depths

he initially seems cute and like a normal, awkward teen, but the major plot decisions he makes include: shooting up a school, taking pictures of a half naked girl without her consent, joining multiple hate groups because he just wants to feel included and is willing to throw what little morals he has to do so, sending creepy messages to a girl (the end of route ones you get in the first game are heavily implied to be him) among other things. In the messages we also see how strong his bitterness towards everyone and everything is, as well as references to his violent urges.

While it could be argued he is bitter due to his environment- no support system, everyone hates or ignores him and he is treated like pariah at best and a monster at worst (see his year book messages) it also is evident that he inherently has disturbing urges latent within him. No normal person would go as far as he does. Sure, it’s an exaggerated comedy game, but the comedy comes from the people in it being terrible. the thing is, people can get past disturbing urges and not let these urges define or control them. What they need is support, people to talk to and get help from. Jeffery does not have this, and so he gets worse and worse. His only form of escapism is manga/anime that furthers his depravity.

-He has actual thematic importance.

In the video message at the end of the first game, he talks about how Nicole is privileged by getting attention from men, because at least she’s getting attention that isn’t bullying, and on top of this she gets praise, and lots of really really good attention yet ditches it all by being a dick to everyone. However, Jeffery is very ignorant of the fact that she is still getting abused just in a different way from how he is, and she is lonely as well (see her shock when Emily gives her positive attention in re-up as an example).

The game somewhat corroborates his point about pretty girls having it good when in the intro, Nicole states that she started to become more popular when she got pretty and that’s why she felt so settled into that school she had to move out of when her dad killed himself.

However, it also stresses how shitty it is to be a pretty girl as well. What with the constant sexual harassment the female characters experience from males. This is the part Jeffery can’t seem to grasp, as he almost pins the blame on Nicole for leading these guys on, as if she can somehow magically make them fuck off or something. He honestly doesn’t even give it any thought. To him that kind of attention is most likely still positive. Nobody even looks at him like “that.”

-Character development. Initially he likes Nicole and wants to be her friend. So desperate for attention (especially female) he sticks around her even when she is cruel and bullies him. But we see his love for her become hatred due to how she is. She’s a terrible person but he doesn’t really seem to be able to grasp why when he’s so blinded by this misogynistic idea that women have it better than him. He doesn’t see that her terribleness is a mix of nature and nurture, much like his own and Nicole definitely recognizes that Jeffery is both inherently awful and a product of his environment but hates him too much to want to help him.

in fact it’s trying to help him or make him happy that ends up inadvertently leading to her suicide because that just isn’t the person Nicole is.

note the emphasis I put on Jeffery’s relationship to Nicole. These two characters are FOILS to eachother, which is what makes them and their relationship so compelling to me.

-relatability

though he is not meant to be liked or sympathized with, part of Jeffery’s appeal to me as a character is being relatable. He is a nerd stereotype turned up to 11 and I happen to check most of the boxes for that stereotype lol. While I was never bullied (shockingly enough) I know what it’s like to be the weird kid, to be ignored and to be so socially clueless that you do things that get you marked as an outcast without realizing what you’re even doing wrong.

I also know what it’s like to be kind of creepy and off putting. To say too much too soon to someone you barely know at all because you trust them, they’re being nice to you and you’re lonely and you think it’s weird they’re being nice but you want it so badly for someone to give you this positive attention. And you’ll do anything to take it, deal with anything. You stop even thinking straight.

it’s like you deserve to be lonely almost. The people around you seem to corroborate it with how they talk about you, (or how little they do so) and you do it to yourself! You don’t even realize it might be because of psychosis or something that you keep hurting yourself by saying stupid shit and doing stupid things but a part of you knows it. But you just say you’re being edgy and brush it off.

self destruction comes from a lot of factors- losing control over your life, how you were raised, habits you developed, desire for something that causes you to act unreasonably, hedonism and so on.

I’m abt to post a new clarisse FIC but I just wanted to go on a rant abt this

Clarisse and silena Were in love. Ive already made a post abt thhis before but I wanna just like elaborate

- “Clarisse is in love with Chris and silena is in love with Charles beckendorf”

Yes that’s true but have you ever noticed how differently clarisse treats female characters vrs male characters. She softer and while still a bitch not an actually shitty person to characters like for example annabeth, silena and more, in the sea of monsters she was concerned for annabeth after she broke her ribs but in the next line insulted Percy.

She is also seen countless times being kinder to annabeth in multiple different scenes while still be harsh to other male characters. She gets ruthless in the war meeting in the final book and all she said is “I apologize to only silena” or something like that. When have we ever seen clarisse apologize than to silena

- “clarisse went into the labyrinth to find Chris she loved him”

Clarisse went into the labyrinth to find Chris, the only reason for this was because he showed up to her house in Arizona. She felt responsible to get him back from camp. She also helped nurse him back to sanity until Dionysius could help.

Clarisse felt responsible for Chris, that’s why and she can still love him platonically. That’s how I’ve always viewed their relationship was them being platonic.

- “silena and clarisse Were Just good friends that’s it”

Clarisse and silena Are direct parallels to Achilles and Patroclus, two characters in the Iliad who are very clearly lovers.

I Said it once I’ll say it again, Rick most likely didn’t think about making both girls the parallels to the myth until he was already writing the book. If he had decided on that way before I firmly believe he would of made them both together

But I would also like to add his books came out in the early 2000’s the last Olympian coming out in 2009 and queer represantion wasn’t as “common” as it is now. With Disney also being his publisher he was probably hesitant to even introduce a gay character in his books let alone two sapphic women.

Yes we started to see change for queer identies in the early 2000’s we also have to still think that again Disney is ricks publisher, even Disney didn’t really start being more accepting of LGBTQ+ identies until recently.

I Just explained why above but also he had already written their relationships out, silena and beckendorf in the demigod diaries or which ever one it was and clarisse and Chris in the battle of the labyrinth.

In the end even actors like Dior who plays clarisse says that her character and silena will have a more sapphic relationship and with the show coming out now and with season 2 being announced, Rick having cannon gay characters a whole book about nico and will who are to young men in a relationship going through Tartarus, I belive Rick will make silena and clarisse have a more romantic relationship compared to the books.

Also we’re going to be seeing a lot of change anyways, Rick wrote these books YEARS ago and of course like any artist you will critique your old work. So again I hope we see a more developed and romantic relationship between silena and clarisse especially since Clarisse is very much a lesbian coded character

Anti’s coming into the Gwyneth Berdara tag and accusing Gwynriel’s of the mischaracterization of Gwyn or only liking Gwyn because of Gwynriel is fucking LAUGHABLE. 

All I've seen are posts singing praises about Gwyn (just Gwyn!) and I have NOT ONCE seen a Gwynriel shipper characterize Gwyn wrongly.

What are we mischaracterizing her for? 

Being brave as fuck for choosing to train to be a Valkyrie? Nesta’s admiration and fondness of her? For saying she’s resilient for being able to enjoy herself and laugh with her friends after experiencing some fucked up shit? THAT SHE'S LIKABLE?? Being strategic and patient FOR DAYS and spying on the Illaryian males before sending the beasts after them ruthlessly? Being smart and witty? Her interests in sex and smut and stating she doesn’t want to be coddled? Her willingness to sacrifice herself on the bridge? Her determination to finish the blood rite even though she was injured as fuck? Her unwavering loyalty toward Nesta and Emerie? That Nesta thinks her beauty is comparable to Mor and Merrill?

The fact that she’s not judgemental and she immediately accepted Nesta when they were sharing their stories? Her own struggle with guilt and self hate? Her immediately witnessing what Azriel is capable of when they first met? Azriel’s shadows reacting POSITIVELY towards her and yeah, the thought of her joy glowing in his chest? That she teases him and challenges him? That she hasn't seen him torture someone yet but she's seen worse shit soooo why would she be fazed??

She's canonly more suitable for Azriel than anybody else in the series and THAT'S why people dislike her as a character even though on her own she's a great character.

Those are only SOME of her positives we got in ONE book. Notice, some of those positives include Azriel, but most don’t 🤷🏻‍♀️. 

Allllllll of those points have textual evidence to support them. And these are allllllll the points Gwynriel shippers love to make about her. 

The only charactization of her anti’s will accept is if she goes back to the library, stays there and is never seen or heard of in canon again. Or if she’s evil which she’s likely not going to be. Stop being so petty. If anything SJM has her set up for a HEALING journey. 

However some people obviously like to see a female character STAY broken and let her trauma define her.

Getting mad when she's so obviously such a fun character? She has fun and laughs and teases her friends and Cassian and Azriel and enjoys herself but there's something wrong with that and you think its annoying????

Fanon Gwyn and Canon Gwyn are basically the same. If you don’t like fanon Gwyn, you probably don’t like canon Gwyn and that’s fine, whatever, I think you have totally shit taste but whatever just STAY OUT OF THE GWYNETH BERDARA TAG.

I’m a Gwyn stan first and foremost but I have not seen one single other Gwynriel shipper mischaracterize her. 

Fanon is fun until it melts your brain and you start believing ONLY fanon and wrongly remembering canon and then attacking others for using canon to support their points. 

It’s crazy to me that anti’s can dislike a fictional character so much that the idea of potentially seeing more of said character in the canon universe and getting more fandom love honestly upsets them.

Like holy shit, I don’t like E/riel, but I have enough tact not to take that out on either Elain OR Azriel. And I don’t go looking to start shit with shippers because I'm not pathetic. Too bad some people can’t extend that same class to Gwyn. 

Also, I feel like some people forget about this fucking scene.

You can't come into the Gwyneth Berdara tag claiming we mischaracterize her. We take her as is. No need to pick her apart or give her little unnecessary traits to fit her better with any one.

It's not possible to make her out to be something she's not when every little thing we love about her is canon.

You can be salty over us comparing Bryce/Hunt and Azriel/Gwyn but oh wait! SJM uses similar language to describe them ON PURPOSE in canon as fucking well!!!

Hating on Ending D will get you nowhere.

Don’t underestimate it.

One thing that pisses me off about this stupid fandom were the reactions of the killugon fans once they heard about Ending D.

Nah cuz let’s talk about it.

These ppl are seriously acting delulu rn.

They weren’t too much before but now it’s just ridiculous.

I’m starting to see a reaction pattern here through this plausible ending:

1) Some are saying that Togashi said this as a joke therefore, he’s just fucking with us and hasn’t actually revealed anything.

2) Togashi will never use this ending because he scrapped it.

3) Togashi said that his personal favorite ending was Ending C but he said that the majority of the fans will hate it. So it doesn’t mean that he’s super ecstatic by Ending D.

4) This ending is way too shonen and cliché for him to actually use. Since it’s so basic, it doesn’t scream his style. Therefore, even if the ending happened, it wouldn’t feel real.

5) The fans who like this ending are problematic and homophobic.

I’m so sick of hearing these same things come out of their mouths so let me just clearly explain why this is all ridiculous:

1) Why would Togashi ever joke about something like his plausible passing and the work he’s been working so hard for which started in 1998?? The dude has never once joked around with the questions he received about hxh. He’s also been the type to spoil some people through interview questions too so if we follow your logic, that would mean he would’ve also lied about the fact that Kurapika and all the phantom troupe members would die.

2) We shouldn’t act so hasty when it comes to this ending just because it got scrapped. Togashi did say that he took it out from the endings he was planning on using but it doesn’t change the fact that he: a) actually took his time out of the day to think about the idea in the past and b) said that he’ll use it if his time runs out and if he can’t come up with a greater ending better than the three ones he already got.

3) Yes, it’s true. Out of the three ones we got, Togashi’s favorite ending was the third one, Ending C. So what? He said he kept it around simply because it was his favorite.

That also means he’s not so into Ending A and Ending B. An author doesn’t have to specifically use their favourite ending to end their series. They have to think about what the audience and what the majority of the reactions would be like to the ending they came up with. So since he estimated that only 10% of the fandom will like Ending C and 90% of it will hate it, there’s a very high chance he won’t even attempt at using it for the ending. Also, we have no idea what the ending is about.

4) The ending may sound basic and very shonen-like but so was Yu Yu Hakusho’s ending. Or rather the ending of the main character Yusuke. If you don’t happen to know, Yu Yu Hakusho was Togashi’s old work and in it, the main character Yusuke comes back from his adventures to marry a girl named Keiko, his childhood friend.

5) Did you ever stop to think that maybe some people just didn’t like killugon? Shocking, I know. We just plainly don’t like it. It doesn’t make the most of us homophobic or problematic in the least, stop trying to shove that dumb idea onto other killugon fans’ throats. Some of us are just not into yaoi and have tried to get into it but just don’t see the appeal (i’m personally more of a hetero and yuri fan) of it. Also, some of us would be delighted to see more female characters taking more major roles in hxh. It would be refreshing to see since the main cast is all filled with males while the females usually take minor roles like mothers, instructors, teachers, supporters for some male characters, (ex: Mito, Kikyo, Abe, Noko, Palm, Bisky, Coco Loo, Coco from Heavens Arena, Melody, Alluka) or are just in the background most of the time (ex: Canary, Amane, Tsubone, Shizuku, Machi) (wow these almost sounds like SHONEN ROLES FOR WOMEN).

He was way in over his head. There was nothing he could do to stop himself from walking out onto that pier. And the water that danced below, it was calling out to him. Why was he out this late at night? He runs a hand through his hair and sighs. How could this happen to him?

It all started with a late night walk home from the pub. And then he heard the enchanting voices calling out to him. One of them was a male voice, the other a female voice. They both lured him out to the pier. There he saw two beautiful people. The male was blond, and he was overly friendly. He had these beautiful green eyes that almost seemed to glow. The female, a dark haired beauty, was a lot more flirty.

Shouta had learned the legends of the Sirens, but he never thought he’d encounter any. And that first night snowballed into a series of late nights where he’d encounter these strange creatures. Most of the time he was somewhat inebriated, so he figured he was just confused.

But tonight, it was something different. Something else seemed to be calling him out to the pier. The song seemed louder, the voices even sweeter. It was like he was no longer in control of his body. Once he got to the edge of the pier, this is when he realized that something seemed very, very wrong.

Then the blond emerged, a smirk on his face. He rests his arms on the pier, looking up at Shouta. He smiles charmingly, reaching out to caress the other man’s calf.

“I knew you’d be here,” the blond says. “You couldn’t resist our call. Why don’t you get in the water with me? It’s very comfortable down here.”

Shouta looks at him bewildered. “In the water? It’s freezing out here. I’d die of hypothermia,”

The blond laughs, “I can keep you warm.”

The dark haired beauty emerges, and she gets up onto the pier. Shouta then notices how she looks to have these deep cuts in her neck. Upon closer inspection, he then realizes they aren’t cuts. They seem to be gills.

“Are you understanding now? Do you know what we are?” She asks, looking up at him.

Shouta turns to run for it, but the dark haired beauty is on his trail quickly. She wraps one arm around him, whispering something incomprehensible in his ear. Shouta thinks maybe she’s speaking some sort of ancient language. Then he’s out cold, limp in her arms.

The next time he wakes up, he’s somewhere he doesn’t recognize. It’s cool in here, but not freezing. It’s not long before the blond comes in and settles on the makeshift sofa with Shouta. He leans in, smirking and revealing the dark red color of his eyes.

“Such a cute little human…” Hizashi whispers. “I knew you’d fall for me. They all do. You can’t handle my voice.”

Shouta feels his hands; they are smooth and feel almost damp to the touch. He arches into Hizashi’s affections, moaning as the blond undresses him completely. There in the darkness, Nemuri makes herself known to both of the men. Her eyes are shining pink, breaking the dark shadows.

“You’re always so greedy, Hizashi.” She complains. “What if he wanted me to touch him first?”

Hizashi smirks at his partner, “There’s a lot of him. You can have your turn.”

Shouta gasps as he feels the coolness of water dribbling down his body. Hizashi gently begins to rub Shouta’s body, examining scars and moles as he maps out the man’s skin. Nemuri approaches, placing a careful kiss to Shouta’s lips.

“You were right, Hizashi.” Nemuri states. “He’s such a cute little human.”

Her hands are even softer as she wraps them around Shouta’s erection. He lets out a strangled moan; it’s almost as if he’s trying to break free from this spell. But just like earlier, he cannot control his body properly. So instead he melts into these affections, moaning like a little whore as Hizashi and Nemuri take turns making him cum.

It feeds into the heteronormative idea that men and women cannot be friends without falling in love with each other, also the idea that “you can’t help/stop/control yourself” when it comes to sex. Also it’s just really shitty and annoying, like why are you acting like this?? How hard is it to stay committed to your partner????? Why do they keep making couples cheat on their partners, like I get that it’s for the drama, but it honestly makes me angry and makes me turn off the show or movie.

Damsel in Distress

we all know this one. usually a beautiful, helpless woman (a young maiden in fairytale versions), who is attacked or kidnapped or trapped, (usually by an antagonist but sometimes just by circumstances) and needs rescuing by our dashing male hero. once saved, she usually rewards him with a kiss or beginning a romantic relationship with him, or in fairytale versions is given to him as a bride.

Propaganda:

main reason is the female character has no agency. she only exists as motivation for the hero, and then a reward if he succeeds. i dont think i have to explain further why that sucks/ the implications of that. however depending on the way its done it also can have lots if other fun problems too, like often because she's always 'beautiful'/ attractive the antagonist/ villain might want to have her for themselves/ fuck her, leads into nasty territory pretty easily (that is usually only further motivation for the hero to 'save' her, who cares about her own interiority etc)... and then there's also the 'virtue' part where to be a good damsel they often have to be 'pure' and morally good and feminine etc etc etc.... you get the picture. its tiring. we dont need it. sometimes it can be well done if its subverted but lets abandon the uncritical/ classic version pls...

I have issues. I spent two hours last night between the ungodly hours of 2-4 AM writing a reprise of I've Got This from Tangled the Series/Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure.

Why did I do this instead of getting a good night’s rest? I wish I knew. I have this issue where my best ideas come to me when I’m trying to fall asleep and I will spend literally hours doing stuff like this until I basically pass out from exhaustion. This is not by choice. I am a prisoner of my own subconscious self.

I really like I’ve Got This, but I wish there was a reprise at some point in the series with a happier conclusion because that chorus brings me so much joy and has untapped potential.  So I came up with the idea of a version that plays when Raps has been queen for a while and has a good handle on her kingdom. And then it turned into this goofy plot about a bunch of fuzzy creatures overwhelming the kingdom and Raps struggling with trying to solve the issue without forcing the fuzzies to leave because she thinks they’re cute.I would love it if one day people who can sing in the voices of these characters could get together and bring my little song to life. If I had the skill or health to record it myself, I would, but that's not something I can do right now with my disability. Also I'm a guy and even if I did become a master vocalist my voice could only go so far and wouldn't be able to sound anywhere close to the female characters. ​Male Citizen #2: Achoo!​

Do you think the duffers are bisexual? (or gay, but they both have had female love interests and one had a whole wife). I just find it so interesting that two completely non-queer male showrunners would choose to tell this intimate queer slowburn love story when they just…. didn’t have to? Not that straight writers can’t create gay characters, but it seems far more likely that they just would have made will being gay as an after thought or even just as a matter of fact thing, not as something connected to their self-insert character mike that takes five seasons to cook. It’s not impossible that progressive straight male filmmakers would do this, but it makes me go 🤨

I know I've made jokes about Matt Duffer being the gay twin and Will being his self insert, using Netflix millions to stage the words most elaborate coming out in history 🤭 Based on vibes (can't explain it, just know it when I see it sometimes) but not entirely based on too much. It's all very vague, mostly light jokes. But also - entirely plausible. There's nothing saying either can't be bi or some sort of queer, why not? I definitely also go 🤨 but there's a part that is also pulling for the idealist in me who thinks that ANYONE can give love and care to any type of character and we shouldn't just write only what we know. Innumerable reasons a straight man might want to write a story like Will's including just - because they wanted to and felt it is a worthy, compelling story. I like that reality.

I do want own voices, more rep, more opportunity. But also - let's say they're straight and pull, this off? Setting the standard. Breaking the expected. OR ALSO - I gave up my search because I could never find the source, but I remember mention at one point maybe here? Maybe on another blog? About the Duffer's inspiration for certain characters and how they had a close childhood friend growing up who was gay, who inspired Will. I cannot find the interview source to prove it's real though and kinda gave up. Regardless, I do trust them. Maybe I shouldn't but I am an intrinsically hopeful person.

Looking through the 2023 WoTCon panels and...

Really? Do we really need this ‘eternal fandom debate’ regurgitated in 2023? Why is it Min Farshaw alone that perennially gets this treatment? Where is the ‘Damn, he’s a sexy Lamp’ analysis for Gawyn Trakand, who is just around to complain about Rand?

Even to the extend that when the TV show was being cast, fans were speculating that Min would be cut or combined with Elayne, horrifying even Rafe Judkins!

Q: Are you going to merge Min and Elayne?

A: Hell no 

Q: Will min, elayne, and avienda have to be combined into a single character?

A: Girl you crazy. I’m not going to combine huge characters like that.  Maybe sometimes a minor character folded into a more major one to make  better use of our cast but nothing nutso

Can’t female characters play different kinds of important roles without being leaders, Queens, Amyrlins and warriors anymore? If one female character plays a supporting role to a male character she’s reduced to being a ‘sexy lamp’?

I can understand this critique if Min Farshaw was the sole, lead female character in the series. However, in a series where the female characters are the most powerful, most pro-active, comprise most of the leaders of this world, make the rules, why is it that Min Farshaw is always picked out for simply supporting the man she loves?

And given how important Rand’s mental health is to the survival of the world, isn’t Min’s emotional strength and support to this person she loves dearly also an important narrative plot?

Min - ‘I love this person, he needs my help, others are doing their part to save the world, I am saving the person who is essential to saving the world’

Fandom - ‘Is Min a sexy Lamp, simply there for decor. Let’s continue to have this eternal debate!’

And if the criticism is about problematic or sexist writing for the character in terms of fashion and dressing etc. then there’s a lot of problematic writing and tropes for ALL the female characters in they way Jordan uses stereotypes and leans hard into the gender divide of ‘Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus’, the spankings and nudity etc. 

Min trying to find allies to support Rand, her visions, her friendships with Far Dareis Mai, her sticking by him when he suffers from PTSD from the box when all his friends are afraid of him, think him mad or think to control him...Without Min Farshaw, Rand al’Thor would be a different, much darker, more lonely character who has absolutely no one by his side.

In a book series where characters fall in love in a few seconds because of the pattern and then spend the rest of the series apart, Rand and Min is that rare relationship where they spend time with each other and support each other.

I love Min Farshaw and I hope the TV show does not change the book character too much and turn her into a mini Egwene/Elayne/Aviendha because of this idea that female characters cannot be different things and have different roles and parts to play in a story or be secondary/tertiary characters and in supporting roles. We get a wide variety of male characters in the books, let’s want and hope for the same with it’s female characters.

I read your opinions about swordcatcher and I was curious about what you consider to be the light borrowing of tlh.

I see bits and pieces of both Grace and Cordelia on Antonetta (good god how I hate this name, I know it's a real name but it doesn't sound like one, why couldn't it be antonella? Idc it rhymes with salmonella, it still sounds more legit), and lady alleyne is sona and Tatiana's love child.There is also the matter of marakand being their equivalent of Persia and Conor and Kel (allegedly) being half Persian, but if I'm being honest I see this more as Cc having the opportunity to express her love for Iran than with tlh specifically. Cordelia and Alastair were white and French originally, after all. Besides that tho none of what I like to call "elements of a cc book" present in sw are really a prerogative of tlh.

I would even argue that it was a smart move on cc's part to bring them on this new universe.As much as she may want to cement herself as name on adult high fantasy, she's not starting from scratch and it is to her advantage to endear her enormous fan base, many of whom grew up with her books and now are adults themselves, to this new world by bringing familiar elements into it.

I would also argue that she repeats them not out of a lack of creativity, this rich new worldbuilding is proof that she has that to spare, but rather bc at this point she knows her public and what appeals to them.It may be controversial, but I think Tda is her least liked series precisely bc it lacks some of those tropes and subverts others

When I said “light borrowing”, I actually was just trying to be sarcastic in my original review, but I would now rather say that Cassie very heavily borrowed from not just TLH but the other TSC books. And Kel and Conor allegedly being half-Persian is the last thing that even crossed my mind when I thought of this.

Lin is so very much Cordelia personality-wise in my opinion. Shy girl looking for a sense of empowerment and independence in a male-dominated place. Dips her toes into high society/court and recoils from it. Does a public sexy dance as a means of embracing her sexuality and femininity even though the sensual element from her personality is very much repressed in the name of female propriety in regular daily life. Red hair. Fairly oblivious. Quite sheltered from society’s depravity.

I would also argue that Kel and Conor’s relationship is just James and Matthew’s relationship but on opioids laced with fentanyl. We have the more serious, obvious, trusting main character and his hedonistic, secretive, higher ranking best friend who is absolutely keeping things from him and vice-versa. Kel is the ground to Conor’s sky and whatnot. They love each other but miscommunication and, gasp, a girl is driving a wedge between them. Kel regularly has to slap sense into an inebriated, flirtatious Conor who can’t get his priorities straight. Sounds a little familiar!

Antonetta is very much aligned with Grace’s character as well. Pretty, dainty, blonde character who knows way more than she lets on to people and with an overbearing mother who has spent her life grooming Antonetta for high society and entrapping powerful men into marriage with her. Of course the simple boy at court (Kel) is obsessed with her.

I have a few more minor examples, but all in all I think I’d take the opposite view of yours in that Cassie gives 110% to worldbuilding and story arcs and layered plot and as a result, she uses up a lot of her energy and spark and focus when it comes to fleshing out her protagonists. Don’t take this post as hate towards Sword Catcher or anything - I loved it. I gave it four stars, and I didn’t minus any stars whatsoever because of the Cassie-isms I detected. But I think she needs to diversify a little more when it comes to character development, that’s all!

I think what gets me about Gavin is that why do people act like he is incapable of change.

Let’s bring up Hank. Hank hates androids. He treats Connor with disrespect, he insults him, he physically assaults Connor (regardless of the players choices) and in some options, he can kill Connor.

Gavin is the same. He hates androids, insults them, can assault/kill Connor blah blah blah but interestedly enough the last two can only happen due to the players choices, unlike Hank where regardless of player input, Hank will shove Connor against a wall and threaten him.

Now with these two being so similar, why the different treatment?

Because Hank gets development. Hank has trauma connected to androids. Hank is partnered with Connor and along with him, learns that androids are not machines but truly alive and by the end, Hank does not hate androids and he and Connor are friends.

That’s the difference. The story shows Hank changing. Also, and this is dependant on personal tastes I feel but Hank is nicer to his colleagues and more people respect him versus Gavin who doesn’t give two shits about people’s opinion.

So now I ask, why could the same not happen to Gavin?

Who says he doesn’t have some deep reason for hating androids? Hating them for taking human jobs is already a damn good reason in my books. I mean just look at how AI is already doing the same thing right now in real world.

Who says that Gavin couldn’t have spent time with an android, like Hank did and had his views changed by seeing their plight?

The only thing that separates Hank and Gavin is that the story showed Hank changing and growing and Gavin not and that’s fair. The story is about Hank, not Gavin.

But as a fandom, that’s the reason why we exist. To take characters, elements of a story etc and explore what the creators did not/forgot to.

Yet people have apparently lost any ability to do this when it comes to Gavin. You’re really telling me that these people can buy Hank changing throughout the story but can’t fathom Gavin, who hates androids just the same as Hank, doing the same?

You’re telling me these people can’t think, can’t delve deeper just a little, tiny bit?

I don’t know about you but that just screams so lazy and unbothered to me.

If people don’t care about Gavin, then don’t. I personally don’t care about characters that many love but don’t sit there and say “Gavin is so irredeemable and evil and there is no way that someone like him can change” because most of them will say Hank is their favourite character.

Most vocal ppl don't wanna hear this, but I'll say it plainly bc idgaf.

Modern society (immorally) encourages ppl to hate Gav bc he's a masculine white man -- one not confirmed to be gay which would land him far less criticism today -- that's conventionally attractive. Hank isn't considered attractive to most ppl out there and that gives him a pass. It's abhorrent.

Straight/gay, white/black, male/female, etc. It doesn't matter. Hatred towards a sexuality/race/gender, etc. is never okay. No "ifs" or "buts." Period.

The number of times I've heard ppl say Gav and Con, "are only popular bc they're attractive white men" is insane. I've encountered lesbian Gav fans, ace/aro Gav fans, Gav fans who find him ugly. So that alone disproves such a brain-dead statement that all Gav fans like him "bc he's attractive." It's plain racism, sexism/misandry, heterophobia, and hatred for good-looking individuals in general.

Anyone denying this is either delusional about it, unaware, or well aware that they're full of shit and lying their asses off.
