The Worst Trope Ever Showdown: FINAL POLL
Yours truly once again did a stupid and forgot to post this on Sunday when I said I would, but I just remembered, so here we are for THE FINAL ROUND. Without further ado:
Cringe Comedy
Comedy that evokes awkwardness for humor.
Propaganda:
self explanatory
Out-of-Context Eavesdropping
Someone overhears a conversation and, lacking the full context, misinterprets it as something more serious.
Propaganda:
I hate all miscommunication tropes but this is the one that makes me want to strangle people the most. "we need to fabricate a reason for A and B to hate each other, but not one based on their actual personalities or situation. Instead, Person A talks about something personal and important, but they decide to word it in the dumbest way possible. Person B decides to listen in on a private conversation and then gets so mad at this stuff they weren't supposed to hear that they don't even listen to the final sentence that completely recontextualises the whole conversation. also 90% of the time A would never express feelings this way AND B would never snoop this way. just poor writing to inspire the world's most insipid conflict between morons.

so! i was playing around with the personality i wanted for my inky x jo x blackwall romance ....
and i TENTATIVELY leaned on kendis. as a possibility. and i really wanted a qunari warrior! however, there are no dimple mods for qunaris [there are barely one period!]
*this would work better with someone from Ozammar though ... so idk.
** here is the mod [if someone has a better one feel free to share! if someone has a dimple mod for qunari, this nulls and voids this entire poll. so, please share that too]
*** no touchee [i literally mean dont touch but now i miss mr. queen]

grapecase I think we can now assume the writers are setting...
There was also his flirting in fantasy wte land. I think since he might be getting a LI and she is the only person he’s been making eyes at, the thought is she will be his TL
She didn’t flirt back in FTL2 and he looked at her ass.  Hook would flirt with a telephone poll if it was looking particularly cute that day in the sun.

The Worst Trope Ever Showdown: Round 1, Side A
Found the Right Person
a character is single and content with it. they say they aren't interested in dating and haven't felt this way about anyone. others keep telling them stuff like "you just haven't found the right person yet" and they always respond saying that they don't want to. but then, mostly right at the end, they do find the right one and start a relationship with them that comes very sudden and is like weirdly intense. bonus points if the character is a strong and independent woman and then in the end decides to give up her job or hobbies for love or whatever.
Propaganda:
I hate it so much. I'm aroace and people constantly ask me when I will finally find a partner or that I just haven't fount the right one yet. I do not want to find the right one! leave me alone! and seeing these characters that I can relate to, that have a good life, maybe a cool hobby and friends who is also constantly asked this and says that they don't want a partner, and then having them stripped of this aspect because suddenly they find the love of their life and drop these things because their partner wants them to, is not fun. because this implies that everyone deep inside wants to find someone, and people who say that they don't are lying. because apparently only finding love and admitting that you were wrong and actually wanted this all along can make you happy. amatonormativity at its best. people will point to these characters and be like "look, even they could find love, there is still a chance for you", fuck off
The Power of Friendship
Companionship with others is a character's greatest strength.
Propaganda:
This trope seems to be everywhere, from books to tv shows to movies. It's always at the end of the fight when everyone is about to give up and then the hero launches into a speech about this and all of a sudden they have the strength to defeat the villian even though they were literally about to die

The Most Annoying Trope Showdown: Quarterfinals, Poll 4
Found Family Breakup
When you have the found family, but then at the end of the story they all just leave and go start nuclear families with random love interests and live in different places and rarely talk to each other, or otherwise seem to completely lose the found family closeness they had during the story
Propaganda:
It’s literally getting rid of the found family, taking away the best trope ever
Pair the Spares
Every or nearly every character who did not get together with someone during the story is paired off in the epilogue or very end. The characters are often shown having kids together as well
Propaganda:
This may just be my aromanticism talking, but it's annoying seeing everyone getting shoved into a relationship at the last minute. It doesn't even make sense most of the time. Let! People! Be! Happy! Single!
I am aroace and I hate this. just let them be happy on their own, don't just pair up characters for the sake of pairing them up, even if they have zero chemistry. this happens so often in all kinds of media, and fandom is also guilty of this. not everyone needs a partner! leave them alone!
I love romantic subplots but this is just amatonormative bullshit. It has all of the "romantic partner=happy ending" bullshit that fucks people up in real life, with none of the fluttery crush feelings or the angsty decisions. It doesn't add anything to the character arcs and is only detrimental to the themes of a work as a whole. It can cast a shadow over other romantic subplots in the series I might have enjoyed up until this point, because I start to wonder if those romances were really about the character/themes/plot, or if the writers simply think "leading lady goes with leading man, sidekick with sidekick, etc. etc."
It's fucking stupid. A lot of the characters that end up together either barely interact, make no sense or both. It also implies the only happy ending requires love and marriage. It makes no sense for some of the characters to want to settle down and have kids even if they are with someone they love.

The Most Annoying Trope Showdown: Round 1, Poll 25

Corsets are depicted as always painful and uncomfortable.
Propaganda:
CORSETS ARE /FINE/ IF THEY FIT PROPERLY AND AREN'T TIGHT-LACED!!! DOWN WITH THOSE MISOGYNISTIC MYTHS OF THEM REARRANGING YOUR ORGANS!!!!
Found Family Breakup

The Most Annoying Trope Showdown: Round 1, Poll 27
Joker Immunity
A recurring villain does not die even in situations where they should because they're too popular or too good.
Propaganda:
If the villain won’t die, they should redeem themselves otherwise they should be dead. You don’t have faith in the audience to like a new/other villain? Stop that line of thought. Explore the ramifications of what the vacuum of the death of big, bad villain does.
Humans Are Special
Speculative fiction treats humans as exceptional and different from other species.
Propaganda:
I'm not a fan of any humans-are-so-totally-different-from-aliens trope, whether it portrays humans positively or negatively. And I'm generally an optimistic person, so you might think I'd hate the negative version more. But "Humans are Special" is just so unrelentingly stupid in any of it's manifestations. How exactly does an alien intelligence create a galaxy spanning empire without creativity? Or adaptability? Or curiosity? Or a sense of community? Or whatever you pick. There is a lot of world building heavy lifting needed to explain how the aliens would either survive long enough to build their great works or be motivated to do so without what usually appear to be drives that are seen in all world cultures, modern or historical, not to mention seeming to be in evidence on this planet in other species. And the writers never do this.

The Most Annoying Trope Showdown: Round 1, Poll 8
Forgotten First Meeting
Two characters meet each other and think they've never met before. They have, a long time ago, but either one or both of them has forgotten.
Propaganda:
They met each other when they were children and forgot about it until they reunited as adults, that's how you know it was a fated meeting and destined to be together and they'll always come back to each other. JUST AS BARFY AS SOULMATES. I ALSO HATE SOULMATES.
Tsundere
A character is outwardly harsh or violent, but has a sweet and vulnerable side that comes out around those they love.
Propaganda:
Abusive behavior isn't very kawaii

The Most Annoying Trope Showdown: Round 1, Poll 21
"Not So Different" Remark
Two characters or groups at odds realize they are more alike than they want to admit.
Propaganda:
I have rarely seen this used effectively. The villain is always like “Ah. You’re just like me because you want to fight me!” while they are literally filling the orphanage with cement.
Found Family
Characters who are not related consider each other to be like family.
Propaganda:
Not everything has to be a structural family. There are other tropes like True Companions and Band of Brothers to explain deep bonds, but instead any woman gets forced into the mother role and friends with complicated feelings toward each other that they should be able to explore gets brushed off as "their siblings. siblings fight sometimes" without addressing any underlying issues.
Idk how to put it exactly, but I think that found family has done irreparable damage to the way people view character relationships. How if two characters aren’t dating, then they MUST view each other as siblings or one views the other as a parent or something similar and thus, make even the idea of them being in a relationship morally unjust and reason for complaints and harassment. How some people seem to just actively ignore existing dynamics just to slot them into a label that’s easier to digest. Sometimes characters are just friends! Sometimes they are just co-workers! Sometimes they are just enemies! Sometimes they are just an infinitely possible amount of relationships that aren’t either ‘dating’ or ‘family’! All in all, I’m just kinda tired of characters being shoved into being family without consideration on whether or not it actually Fits.

The Most Annoying Trope Showdown: Round 1, Poll 4
What Measure Is a Mook
The hero shows mercy to the characterized villain, but not to their nameless henchmen.
Propaganda:
Extreme hypocrisy that immediately makes the hero who pulls it unlikable
Growing Up Sucks
Becoming an adult is portrayed as a bad thing.
Propaganda:
We get it. Childlike whimsy gets scattered by the impounding weight of responsibility. But there’s a lot to like about being an adult.

The Most Annoying Trope Showdown: Round 1, Poll 32
Only Six Faces
When there is a very limited set of character designs within a work, and it is impossible to tell even the main characters apart.
Propaganda:
Like, just put some effort in, would ya? I know I have face blindness, but if that is what is keeping me from recognizing your characters, that means that you made every other part of their design the exact same! Get bold! Get creative! Try not making all your characters some version of Generic Hot Guy #32! Your characters need diversity in order to stand out, so don't be scared of it!
Friends Rent Control
A character's home is larger or more expensive-looking than they should logically be able to afford.
Propaganda:
Characters who live in places that are too expensive. Or even expensively and expertly decorated, no one's apartment looks shabby unless it's a plot point. Everyone has dish sets and the furniture always matches.

No Endor Holocaust
An event that should have caused major collateral damage does not.
Propaganda:
The endpoint of writers trying to make every story have the biggest possible scale and stakes - endings with massive consequences that aren't addressed at all. We did it Patrick! We saved the city!

Academic Alpha Bitch
A bitchy and mean character who excels in academics.
Propaganda:
look just cause you have straight a's doesn't mean you're a bitch. half the people i know with straight a's aren't bitches, and those who are have problems and just need to be talked to. kindly. idk just gets on my nerves lol sorry
Kudzu Plot
Many plot threads are started at once, and are not resolved for a long time, if at all.
Propaganda:
FNAF lore. (no, I'm serious, "a story [that] leaves so many tangled Plot Threads that [makes] it extremely difficult to follow and ridiculously complicated" is literally the definition of why FNAF lore is bad)
