Billy and Mister Scarlet
So, I was reading on the wiki for Mister Scarlet and apparently, he’s broke. Or at least he put himself out of a job. As a result, he has to work odd jobs. You know who also works odd jobs because he’s broke? Billy. Let’s just say they run into each other every now and then when the two happen to both help sweep a certain diner, or run delivers for a local ma and pop shop.
Billy: “Heya, Mister Butler.” *little wave as he picks up some food he needs to deliver*
Brian: “Hello, Billy.” *also picking up some food he needs to deliver*
Billy: “How’s your kid?”
Brian: “He’s doing good.”
And let me tell you right now I think Mister Scarlet, or Brian, cause that’s his name, would want to adopt Billy so badly, but, you know, he’s not in the best financial situation not only that but he has a kid of his own already. The man prays every that odd job he takes, Billy will be there so he can check up on the kid. Because I mean, Billy is such a sweetie. He’s such a cutie patootie and he’s so nice. He doesn’t deserve anything that he went through, and as much as he wants to call CPS, Billy explicitly told him not to. Billy told him this one day when they were unloading boxes, or rather Brian was unloading boxes and Billy was checking them off on a clipboard.
Brian: “I’m just saying, maybe the next home could be better.” *unloads a box from a truck*
Billy: “I’ve thought that too. Multiple times. I don’t ever wanna go to another home again. I’m better off on the streets. *checks something on the clipboard*
Brian: “But you’re not.”
Billy: “But I am.” *says with a little more annoyance in his tone than he’d like. He then realizes this and feels bad* “I’m sorry. I just don’t want to go back. I don’t want a repeat of the last five ones.”
Brian: *sighs* “I’m sorry too. I shouldn’t have pushed you.”
This incident just made him want to adopt Billy more. Then, during all of this, there was his vigilante life as Mister Scarlet. He’d met the hero Captain Marvel a few times now. The man seems friendly. Or at least he seemed friendly
It all started when the two had briefly teamed up to take down a villain.
Marvel: *staring at Mister Scarlet, looking confused*
Mister Scarlet: “What? What is it?”
Marvel: *puts hands on hips* “Well, it’s nothing really. It’s just that every time we meet, I can’t help but think you’re familiar.”
Mister Scarlet: “I don’t feel that at all.”
Marvel: “You don’t, but I do.” *stares for a few seconds* “Mister Butler…?”
Mister Scarlet: *has an almost-heart attack* “Wha? How do you?”
Marvel: “I’m Billyyyssss… uncle. Billy’s uncle.”
Solomon: “Nice save there, champ.”
Mister Scarlet: “Billy’s uncle…?” *remembers the one time Billy opened up to him about how his uncle was the reason he lived on the streets* “You… You bastard!”
Marvel: “What!?”
Mister Scarlet: “Billy! He told me about you! You scummy scum! That kid isn’t in school, working at the ripe age of 10! All because of you!”
Marvel: *hits Billy like a train when he remembers that he told Brian about the whole Ebenezer thing* “Uhm… he’s 12.” *mumbles*
Mister Scarlet: “Like that’s any better! How dare you! How dare you go and pretend to be a hero when you kicked that poor kid to streets?! What is wrong with you?!”
Marvel: *just stands there and takes the verbal lashing because he can’t really say anything without being outed as a liar*

It's interesting how things change in over time and in adaptations (Marvels).
Looking at some of the old comics, and of course, Billy, Mary, and Freddy did not spend much time together at all at first. Freddy and Mary were spinoff characters in other titles, and you could easily perceive them as just not very close. Obviously I know later the Marvel Family title would come out (but I haven't gotten to those yet).
I also plan on checking to see when Billy and Morris got so close. They certainly weren't the day the met, but I don't know if it happened overnight or only developed later.
Dudley wasn't used many time in the old comics, really, but he was used in adaptations and Edgewise wasn't. I'm not sure if Tawny and Dudley ever met (haven't gotten to Tawny issues yet on this re-read), but they are buds in some later versions.
Do Freddy's stories about poverty survive later on (I'm reading though Mary's Wow Comics at the moment) - after he moves into Mrs. Wagner's boarding house? There's a large tonal range over the years these comics were published and in the different titles.
I'm trying to nail down which parts work well together as whole and make a reasonable narrative for my headcanon reboot - I'm a little concerned that I find it easier to work in an anthropomorphic talking tiger than Dudley. But classic Dudley is so associated with company, the company's associated with money, and that complicates things. Plus, if you'll forgive me for saying, right now he's still just the same joke over and over. Kinda feel similarly about Brian and Pinky (so past tired of the lack-of-food jokes). And it would have been nice if Pinky had had a real name (I haven't noticed one, anyway).

Another new earth to add to the cosmos: Earth-S, home of Billy Batson/Captain Marvel and all the Fawcett comics characters. Like Spy-Smasher, Ibis the Invincible, Bulletman and Bulletgirl and Mr. Scarlet and Pinky the Whiz Kid! All these characters get to team up with the JLA and the JSA, to defend the cosmos! (Justice League of America #135):

some old unused ideas that i have found from last year
i was searching in my private discord to see the messages i sent for myself (as a reminder to do certain comics) and I got reminded of some of these silly ideas I used to have [but probably will never do]
Tumblr media
In a school trip to the Zoo, where Billy happens to be, they were showing their Jurassic exhibit, one of the kids fell and Billy as Marvel of coirse would save her by convincing the dinosaur to not eat her.
"She's filled with microplastics and seed oils! She's going to spike your cholesterol levels!" (Bullshiting his way out of that predicament)
The dinosaur wouldnt want that on his system, he's sticking to chicken meat !
The jurassic exhibit is named Pellucidar after Edgar Rice Burrough's book
Tumblr media
The title might be wrong since I still have no idea how copyright works, but as far as I remembered, this was supposed to be a short comic of Captain Marvel (in the modern world after suspendium) getting accused of taking the name of Marvel's fictional superhero (in-universe, marvel is considered fiction in that universe). He'll either get help from Betty Bates (character that appears in Hit comics, the same one Kid Eternity came from) or Brian Butler(Mr Scarlet) to solve the case. Sadly im not as creative so this idea remains in the trash bin

Trump Employee 5 from Mar-a-Lago talks to CNN about goings-on related to Trump's illegal hoarding of classified documents including nuclear secrets.
Brian Butler no longer works for Trump. So maybe he's actually Former Trump Employee 5.
When asked, he said he doesn't think Trump should be a candidate this year.
He told Kaitlan Collins about a transfer of about 10 to 15 boxes of documents to Trump's Bedminster property in New Jersey.
He also described overhearing an Australian billionaire talking about military secrets Trump had apparently shared with him.
I didn't expect to watch the entire vid. But it was compelling because of the matter of fact way Butler spoke – no drama or self-importance – unlike his ex-boss.
It's clear that Trump was doing something dodgy. Attempts at comparison of Trump's massive cache to Pence or Biden inadvertently keeping a few odd files after leaving the vice presidency is like comparing somebody not paying a parking meter with a serial carjacker.

It didn't rain for weeks and there was a drought one time and I am certain I saw Marvel hop into the sky and just... stay there in this weird bobbing motion in the clouds while lightning kept striking every few seconds??? I think he solved the drought but holy fuck man, I had functioning ear drums before! 2/5

After my case got delayed by the opposing council Mr. Scarlet found my cousins actual murderer and turned him in with a recorded confession. Mr Scarlet has awesome timing. Also shout out to Mr. Butler, sweet lawyer, wished me well after that mess 4.5/5

How would you have the characters *change* over time?
When working with a story where the characters age over a decade or three, it becomes important to think how the characters change over time. Especially younger characters who haven't reached adulthood yet. But even the adults. Especially since I'm starting in 1940, and the time period in question has so much change. And change that we're far enough away from now to see in hindsight - when it happens gradually, people don't always realize it as it happens.
Some of these are moral or political issues where it might be tempting for every hero to have the "right" (whatever author believes is best) opinion from the start. And some might well do so. But all of them on every issue? Unions, communism, civil rights, interstates, redlining, gender roles, juvenile delinquency, divorce, the Korean War, beatniks, protests, Vietnam, etc. And there's something to be said for heroes who get exposed to new information and change their minds or who change as the world changes. Now, not everyone has to think about big issues everyday - most are busy living their lives and fighting supervillains. But Billy's job as a journalist does demand that he do so, IMO, and I think Alan's connection to intelligence work and spycraft means he should think about espionage and external political aspects.
Then there are the societal changes that have less moral weight to them - some that are frivolous and some that seem so, but have actual import. What are opinions on whether television rots the brain, rock and roll, on the casualization of fashion for men (in the immediate post-war era), suburbanization, change in dating culture, earlier marriage ages, shift to more white collar word throughout the 1950s? I'm not really sure most would really think about any of those, but some might. Maybe they aren't putting moral weight to to men wearing sweaters instead of suits - but how many follow that trend v. keeping the old ways. Who listens to big band v doo wop v mainstream pop...especially as the last of the old really fades from popularity in the 60s? How do they feel about their daughters wearing miniskirts (I guess Mary really can't complain) and their sons growing beards and wearing their hair long in college? Or changed sexual mores(for women, anyway)? By the 70s, of course, everyone's settled into the new aesthetic, even if they don't al prefer it.

https://www.cnn.com/2024/03/11/politics/trump-employee-5-classified-documents-mar-a-lago/index.html
“At one point in his interviews, Butler says he told investigators that Australian billionaire Anthony Pratt repeated classified submarine secrets following a conversation with Trump in spring 2021.
Pratt met with Trump and heard from the former president about US and Russian submarines at their meeting, then relayed that information to his chief of staff while in the backseat of Butler’s car. Butler later told investigators he was shocked that Trump would share such information with a foreign citizen who paid excessive sums for access to Mar-a-Lago.”
Well fuck

No but seriously, if the joke is that Cap is the Red Superman then Mr Scarlett and Pink are the Red Batman and Robin
Mr Butler is a lawyer, he wants to help at the ground level in the fight against organized crime like OG Batman before he got too popular and involved in everything. Pinky is a brilliantly minded kid who has the same base motivation to go off as his own hero that Dick did, someone killed his parent so he’s going to bring them to Justice. Pinky’s teacher, Mr Jekyl, is his Zucco and he makes his costume before Brian adopts him. It’s only shortly after capturing his teacher that he’s adopted, he was in a boys home for weeks before hand while Brian investigated.
And, more interestingly, they’re working class. It’s a reoccurring thing that Brian doesn’t have enough money even as a good lawyer to give Pinky a good childhood but he works hard to keep a roof over their heads and employ his assistant whose a maternal and caring figure for Pinky. Brian is even self sabotaging in his job for the sake of justice, even if the person he’s defending against is pleading for more time for genuine evidence he’ll hold his half of the proceedings to let them have the time they need for a fair trial.
Fawcett is stupid lucky, they have a working class Batman fighting for their rights in a court of law and on the streets and a magical Superman keeping everyone safe
“Gotham people would totally get fucked in Fawcett.”
Me: oh completely. I agree 100%.
“People from Fawcett would DIE in Goth—“
Me: EEEEEEEEEEE. You’re wrong. Double triple wrong. Fawcett has dealt with too much to be sidelined as off-brand Metropolis. They have dealt with Lady Blaze, Ibac, Sabbac, Arson Fiend, they were stuck in time, they are closer to Heaven and Hell(RoE halves) than anyone else. Gotham would be a cakewalk for them.

Brannigan (1975)
"Well, if it was up to me, I'd get some men out thumping on the streets, passing out some 'e pluribus unum'. That's what ninety percent of police work is today."
"The murder rate in your country, I'm sure, gives ample testimony to your superior police methods."
