I have fallen in love with Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries (specifically Phryne and Jack) and I love seeing a picture of a country and a time that is very unfamiliar to this American--it is truly a study in sociology and anthropology. For instance, I had no clue communism and socialism were so popular in Australia after the First World War. 

But of course, the writer in me is drawn first and foremost to the dialogue. Sparkling and dynamic--a success attributed to the writers and the actors delivering the lines--it is a true tour de force! I'm sad I hadn't heard about this show earlier. 

To celebrate such delicious dialogue and striking ripostes, I've created a top ten list of my favorites!

But my number one favorite riposte from Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries? "If a tree falls in the forest...." "You are very likely somewhere close by wielding the axe!" 😂 Its delivery is so delicious, but the words in the exchange are what truly delight my writer soul. 

Why? It links back to a presentation by Karen Witemeyer to my ACFW chapter on writing deep point of view. She encouraged us to circumvent clichés by personalizing them for the character rather than writing them as they're known. EX: "It was hot enough to melt butter." became for my latest character (an Army CID officer) something like "... to melt an MRE in a Humvee on the streets of Basra". 

This tweaking of the forest-falling tree adage follows exactly that directive. Twisting the old saying into something new, snappy, and completely reflecting each character's personality (both the speaker's and the hearer's). 

Bravo to the writers for the masterclass example! And yes, I geek out on writing craft. 😂🤓

-They have a quirk of always wear gloves on their daily life, but they aren't germafobes or anything. It's something no one can explain, but no one is complaining either, so they can keep the gloves on.

-The nickname "Cold Heart" appeared from a trial, where they didn't hold back during it. The pleads didn't matter, Jayden/Cassandra did their work and won the case. (Although, they aren't made of stone. It felt wrong after...but work is work)

-Since university, they had their time with insomnia and now they have a better sleep schedule. But from that first time on, the group mock them for it, calling them "the tired parent" of the group, also because they are the oldest as well.

-When they are with John, they're more relaxed and they laugh easier than usual. And when they are late thanks to their work, Jonathan awaits for them with the dinner ready and everything prepared for a relaxing night. That's one of the things they love most about him.

When and how they met their partner?

A bit cliché, but it was on the cinema. Jayden/Cassandra were thinking about going with a co-worker, but said co-worker ended up with a late hour case. And since they already had the tickets, as well they should find what to do with the other one.

They tried to call anyone on the group, but all of them already had plans, so they just looked around the cinema. In that moment they saw Price, who was muttering impaciently on the queue for the tickets, and they did the best impulsive decision ever. They offered him the other ticket, to which he accepted, and they went to watch the movie.

Unfortunately the movie was really boring, so they wanted to get out of there, and when Price saw thier reaction, he invited them to eat something. They were surprised, but when they asked about it, he told them that it was a thanks gesture for the ticket. And soon the two of them went to eat on a cafeteria, talking and when John felt interested on them, he gave them his number.

From then on, they went to walk or just to pass the time around the city.

Erika Jayne: Bet It All on Blonde (Part 2)

The road to her comeback concert was a rocky one. Her manager Alexis Fisher and Mikey Minden had to have a crisis meeting!

They were worrying about her performance, and they were beginning to doubt if they should go though with the concert. For all their careers.

They were struggling so much with the number for “One Hot Pleasure” that they had to cut it from the show.

Mikey worried that the trauma with the lawsuits and trials had wrecked her confidence in her persona as Erika Jayne. Something wasn’t right.

But maybe it was too soon?

According to Bravo, her concerts received great reviews and was viewed as a success. Is it true?

Sutton Stracke had been doing shady jokes about the low price of the tickets and she said that she wasn’t going to go to the Las Vegas show.

Kyle Richards thought this was terrible of Erika, as she’s shitting on Erika who’s already beaten down with the Girardi legal cases. Why couldn’t she support Erika?

The only review I could find, was of Vegas 411, who wrote: “Although BET IT ALL ON BLONDE is a smartly-curated experience, it’s not without flaws.”

And her shows weren’t without controversy. There were a lot of noise among the fan pages regarding her shows in Las Vegas.

For instance was someone accusing Erika of stealing her music.

What the documentary didn’t show however was how she had other songs that wasn’t her own, like Madonna’s “Material Girl”.

Her manager called the show the greatest thing Las Vegas had ever seen, which was probably the biggest lie that was told in this documentary.

But she and Mikey were probably more relived than anything else. It looked like it was going to be a huge failure, but Erika managed to deliver a show.

Sadly, Erika’s beloved dog, Tiago died a month after her shows in Las Vegas. She still has a battle to fight with the legal cases Mr. Girardi is going through.

People will continue to want to see her fail, but I don’t know if I’m one of them anymore.

The Sirens are one of the oldest inhabitants of the Known World - even if, for the longest time, they have inhabited only the oceans and, sometimes, rivers and lakes.

As an almost primarily aquatic species, Sirens differ extremely from humans: their skin range through all the rainbow colors, covered in scales and usually in some type of gradient; their "hair" is actually a type of feeling tendril that they can control to a certain extent; eyes are bottomless black, adapted to low-light depths, with a protective membrane for above-water; amphibian lungs make sure they can breathe inside and outside water, and fins alongside back, arms and legs give Sirens good speed and mobility for swimming.

It also must be pointed that, despite having an overall slender silhouette, their muscles, bones and body fat have a higher density than what is usually found in humans, which helps Sirens exploring deeper in the ocean and turns them into fearsome opponents in battle. Still, they are generally peaceful, helping and guiding human ships and fisher boats and constantly trading with coastal human communities.

They were the first to discover and interact with Soul Rifts and Soul Pearls, as far as records go; probably because, as they say, its depths have a great number of Soul Rifts - in fact, all of their disclosed cities are built close and even around Soul Rifts.
