Musk steals a billion dollars from low-income Americans and sends it to Intuit

Let me tell you about the most wasteful US federal government spending I know about. It's a humdinger. You and everyone you know are mired in it for weeks, or perhaps months, every year. It will cost you, personally, thousands of dollars over your lifetime. I'm talking about filing your taxes.

Not paying your taxes. Paying your taxes is fine. It keeps the country running, though not because the government needs our "tax dollars" to pay for things. The government annihilates the money it taxes away from us, and creates new money to pay for programs. The USA needs US citizens' dollars to build highways the same way Starbucks needs its Starbucks gift cards to make lattes – that is, not at all:

I'm talking about filing your taxes. In nearly every case, a tax return contains a bunch of things the IRS already knows: how much interest your bank paid you, how much your employer paid you, how many kids you have, etc etc. Nearly everyone who pays a tax-prep place or website to file their tax return is just sending data to the IRS that the IRS already has. This is insanely wasteful.

In most other "advanced" countries (and in plenty of poorer countries, too), the tax authority fills in your tax return for you and mails it to you at tax-time. If it looks good to you, you just sign the bottom and send it back. If there are mistakes, you can correct them. You can also just drop it in the shredder and hire an accountant to do your taxes for you, if, for example, you run a small business, or are self-employed, or have other complex tax needs. A tiny minority of tax filers fall into that bucket, and they keep the tax-prep industry in other countries alive, albeit in a much smaller form than in the USA.

In the US, we have a duopoly of two gigantic tax-prep outfits: H&R Block, and Intuit, owners of Turbotax. These companies make billions from low-income, working Americans every year, charging them to format a bunch of information the IRS already has, and then sending it to the IRS on their behalf. These companies lobbied like crazy for the right to tax you when you pay your taxes.

In 2003, it looked like the IRS would start sending Americans pre-completed returns, so H&R Block and Turbotax went into lobbying overdrive, whipping up a "public private partnership" called the "Free File Alliance," that promised to do free tax prep for most Americans. But once the threat of IRS free filing was killed, they turned Free File into a sick joke. Americans who tried to use Free File were fraudulently channeled into filing products that cost money – sometimes hundreds of dollars – to use, a fact that was only revealed after the taxpayer had spent hours keying in their information. Free File sites were also used to peddle unrelated financial products to tax filers, with deceptive language that implied that buying these services was needed to file your return:

The big winner from the Free File scam was Intuit, which bought Turbotax in 1993. They made about one billion dollars per year ripping off Americans they'd promised to file free tax returns for. After outstanding work by Propublica, lawmakers and the IRS were finally pressured to create an IRS-based free filing service that would cut Intuit out of the loop. Intuit went on a lobbying blitz without parallel, giving out $3.5m in bribes in 2022 in a bid to kill the Treasury Department's study of a free filing service:

Strangely, no one bought that one. By May, 2023 the IRS had announced its own, in-house free file program:

My sister and I figured out that sometimes the exact same book from the same publisher will have two different thicknesses of paper and so one will be slightly thicker, but we can't work out the height and width thing. Same cover design type, like, same edition. Just. One of them is bigger. Do you know why?

On the size question, though: This is one of the Great Imponderables that drives books' writers at least as far around the bend as their readers.

Now there are some explanations that make at least some kind of sense. Sometimes, for example, even within a single edition of a single book, there may be difference-in-thickness issues for some concrete reason: the challenge is discovering which reason (assuming the publisher hasn't themselves told you about it, which is likely to be the case about 99% of the time). ...A common problem is when, for some reason to do with ongoing geopolitical crap or national/international crises, the price of paper changes suddenly. This will cause publishers to try to reduce costs on a book by (the next time it goes back to press) changing the paper quality for something thinner. One of these changes might come between volumes of a series, which is why you might suddenly get a difference between the paper quality of book 5 and book 6 of what's otherwise supposed to be a unified set.

(There's also a similar weirdness in which going up a level of paper thickness will allow your publisher to shove a book of a given length into a slightly higher price point. So, whammo, it happens, and no one bothers consulting you about this detail.)

Or alternately: All of a sudden, somebody at your publisher decides that your series needs to be packaged in a slightly different format that—for reasons that possibly no one in the field even fully understands—is becoming associated with better sales at some other publisher (or some other imprint at your own publisher). So, bang, between one book of a series and the next, the next volume to come out is a quarter inch taller or half an inch wider. And/or 15% thicker (because the pulp of the paper involved has had more air pumped into it than previously). And your books will continue to look like that until some other fad or trend at the packaging end affects them.

(Or alternately, it doesn't affect them, because your publisher's focus has changed in some inexplicable way—or the in-house accountants have crunched their numbers in some new manner—and they've decided your books aren't worth spending the format-change money on.)

(sigh) Tl:dr; There's no damn telling. (It's vanishingly rare that anybody tells us, anyway.) And I wish I had a clearer answer for you than this. Apologies. :/

For instance, research on "Aphrodite" yields an excessive amount of information. You are more likely to find success researching historical records of Aphrodite's cults in Cyprus, mentions of Aphrodite in the Iliad or other epics, and more specific subjects related to a large idea.

Step 2: Do a preliminary search for information - You can use Wikipedia, encyclopedias, textbooks and books to get started. Wikipedia is a good place to start a preliminary search, but that should not be where your research ends. When you find a bit of information you find particularly useful or interesting, click on the little reference number, find the original source, and read more about it from there! Textbooks can be incredibly expensive, but there are resources out there for you! First, you can find resources through your local library. @growing-yet-into-magic has a guide on Library Services for Witchcraft Research, which better summarizes library resources compared to what I can say. You can try finding PDFs of textbooks on Anna's Archive, LibGen, Internet Archive, Project Gutenberg, and other sites. When possible, please support authors and libraries! I am only recommending these sites for textbooks, which can cost hundreds of dollars at times. You can purchase books from bookshop.org to support local bookstores.

Step 3: Locate materials - You can use the Wikipedia tip for anything. Find the source to a piece of information you find interesting and work backwards to find more material. If you're searching for academic articles in a database of any kind, you will need to become familiar with search filters and Boolean operators to narrow down your search. MIT Libraries has a guide on the Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT). This guide also has more information on ways to narrow your search. I find quotation marks to be one of the most useful tools because it allows you to search for keywords together in a phrase ("Aphrodite cults") rather than looking for the keywords separately. Also, don't forget about primary sources! You can find information from the time period through JSTOR Primary Sources (requires library or university login), Here's a list from the National Archive on ways to locate primary sources.

Step 4: Evaluate your sources - It's not enough to simply consume information. You have to think critically about what you found. The article this post is formatted after references their CARS Checklist for Information Quality. This is especially important for primary sources. The University of Florida has a guide on how to read primary sources. Additionally, the University of Nevada, Reno has a list of questions to ask yourself before reading, during reading, and after reading a primary source.

Step 5: Take notes - You can do this in any fashion you deem best. Don't forget to write down the title and author of the source. You can also choose to just write down the whole citation so you know where your information came from.
