VeronaHills, Round Ten: Roth

It was inevitable, although Morty didn't like to admit it: the cork of the Roth family's champagne popped prematurely with problems.

The day began straight off the vision board. Sandra had returned home with a degree to match the household's diligently crafted decorum, and Stella was hosting brunch to celebrate. The dining table heaved with cinnamon-dusted French toast, berries brighter than the glint of sun from morning dew, flutes of fresh-squeezed orange juice mixed with generous pours of bubbly (her fellow lunching ladies lent manicured helping hands). Crates of Capulet Wine were on standby to ensure guests of their alignment. After tidying away a tired newspaper in the garden, Morty assigned himself the task of greeting one particular VIP.

"Good morning, Hal! Ah, don't mind Bonnie, she's just excited. Let's head inside for a drink, shall we? After you!"

The young man was groomed and grateful, marveling at Stella's spread. Morty was relieved to see his wife relaxing into the role of hostess and putting her Capp concerns away - for the time being, anyway. Thankfully, Hal had the awareness to comment positively on their commitment to the year-round Christmas theme. He was clearly no stranger to monied eccentricities.

The party tucked in, toasted, and talked 'til the sun excused itself for the evening. Brunch certainly wasn't for the weak, Morty realised. However, he later wished he'd proposed a cutoff time (politely indicated with the serving of tea or coffee).

Champagne blurred into Capulet Wine, and Sandra made the liquored decision to take a faerie friend of hers to bed instead of Hal. Morty didn't notice the commotion at first, on account of seeing Stella embracing a famous former footballer outside. He couldn't be angry, at either his wife or his daughter. He'd flitted about with the faerie queen not too long ago - it would be rich of him to object.

Only, the rush of romance out of bounds and the honeyed spells of horny faeries weren't on the runsheet.

Remaining guests knocked back their Earl Greys and took French leave, leaving Morty to wonder if he would ever see another case of Capulet Wine ever again.

Grateful Dead, Bonnie Raitt among 2024 Kennedy Center Honorees

- Arturo Sandoval, Francis Ford Coppola and the Apollo Theater will also be feted Dec. 8 in Washington, D.C.

The Grateful Dead and Bonnie Raitt are among the 2024 Kennedy Center honorees.

Arturo Sandoval, Francis Ford Coppola and the Apollo Theater will also be feted Dec. 8 in Washington, D.C.; highlights from the ceremony will be broadcast Dec. 23 on CBS.

If surviving Dead men Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kretuzmann and Mickey Hart all attend, it would mark the first time the musicians have shared a stage since 2015. They called the honor “the highest of reaches for artistic achievement” in a joint statement, in which they used to honor their fans.

“The Grateful Dead has always been about community, creativity and exploration in music and presentation,” they said. 

“We’ve always felt that the music we make embodies and imparts something beyond the notes and phrases being played - and that is something we are privileged to share with all who are drawn to what we do - so it also must be said that our music belongs as much to our fans, the Dead Heads, as it does to us. This honor, then, is as much theirs as ours.”

Raitt called herself “deeply honored and thrilled” and said the honor is among her career highlights.

“There is no higher level of esteem nor as delightful a celebration and I want to extend my sincere thanks to all who have chosen me to receive this honor,” Raitt said in a statement. “I look forward to the upcoming ceremony and festivities, which I know will be one of my life’s peak experiences.”
