Creature from the Haunted Sea (1961)

While I didn't enjoy this film, that doesn't mean you won't. No matter what I say, the people involved in this project did it: they actually made a movie. That's something to be applauded. With that established...

There are only two good things about Creature from the Haunted Sea. The first is its laughably stupid-looking monster, whose comedic appearance was used in the opening credits of Malcolm in the Middle. It brings back warm memories. The second is that it’s in the public domain. This means you can easily find it for free or packaged together with 49 other horror films for less than $20 - like I did. That price tag is a valuable lesson, which we’ll get to in a bit.

During the Cuban Revolution, American gambler and racketeer Renzo Capetto (Anthony Carbone) is hired by deposed General Tostada (Edmundo Rivera Alvarez) to smuggle the national treasury out of the country. Capetto and his criminal crew, which include his girlfriend Mary-Belle Monahan (Betsy Jones-Moreland), her brother Happy Jack (Robert Bean) and animal impressionist Pete Peterson Jr. (Beach Dickerson) come up with an idea. They will murder the General and his loyalists, then keep the gold for themselves. To avoid suspicion, they will convince the Cubans they are being stalked by a sea monster. Little do they know a real-life monster is following their ship. if the secret agent onboard, XK150 (Robert Towne) had any kind of brains, he’d be able to figure this out quickly and put an end to it.

Even though this is a horror comedy and that much of the criticisms that could be thrown towards Creature from the Haunted Sea were likely intentional, the movie’s not funny so they turn into marks against it anyway. The characters are flat, uninteresting and annoying, with Pete Person Jr. easily winning a gold medal in irritation. Speaking almost entirely in animal noises thanks to a brain injury, his schtick gets old immediately. You’ll spend the brief 75-minute running time wishing he would shut up or get torn apart by the sea monster, which is obviously a scuba diver covered in seaweed (or something that looks like it) with toothpicks glued on the end of their gloves, vampire teeth, and ping pong balls for eyes. Go into any Halloween store on November 1st and you could piece together something better.

Even before the dreadful creature shows up, this premise is just dumb. I know if my shifty shipmates told me two men were just murdered by a sea monster I wouldn’t believe them. No one with their head on straight would. What’s much more likely to happen to Capetto is that the Cubans will see right through his dumb scheme and chop him up into shark bait.

It’s a bad movie and would’ve been bad even in 1961 when the Get Smart comedy thing was popular. If there was any kind of justice in this world, this desert of laughs would’ve been forgotten to the ages. Instead, it made its way into the public domain and regularly finds itself for sale/viewing. The problem is that no one cared about this movie then and they certainly don’t now. Every print you’ll see is scratchy and dusty, with muddy sound that will require you to crank up the volume just so you can understand what the hell is going on. Worse, you won’t find any subtitle option anywhere. You practically have to read the Wikipedia article just to understand what’s happening. It got so bad with the disc I was watching that I actually wound up going on Tubi, hoping that a better print would be available there. I got “lucky”, starting watching again. In no time, I was looking forward to the commercial breaks. At least those were lively, professionally made, colorful and audible.

Suddenly, it hit me. The only reason I was watching this movie is because it came in a box set I bought years ago. I would have to do this 49 more times to “get my money’s worth”. Meanwhile, there are thousands of other movies I could be watching. Even a horrible film like The Snowman or The Love Guru didn’t make me exhausted because I was able to passively absorb them. This was work. A job I wasn’t going to get paid for so I’m cutting my losses. I might've wasted my money, but I'm done wasting my time.

Even if you were sent back in time to see Creature from the Haunted Sea in a top-notch theatre with impeccable audio in the most comfortable seat ever made, I still wouldn’t recommend it. Today, presented like this? It would take all the gold in Cuba to convince me to hit "play". (On DVD, September 13, 2021)

Set your H.P. Lovecraft expectations aside and you just might enjoy The Dunwich Horror. The film features a great cast, including Sandra Dee, Dean Stockwell, Ed Begley, Lloyd Bochner, Sam Jaffe, and Talia Shire. While the results may not be 100% successful, the cinematography looks spectacular, the often cliché visual effects are used creatively, and the direction is spot on. Could a 1970 film adapt Lovecraft more faithfully at that time? It’s hard to say. Lovecraft is a tricky beast to translate cinematically. Regardless, the poster from Reynold Brown is phenomenal. Her blonde hair was free and uncut, hung down in the way it brushed just past her shoulders and would suit her even if it got longer. It was clean, shining clean in the light, almost like velvet. And there were her always youthful, withdrawn eyes looking at gaear. She sat at the table, reserved, filled with understanding, with a vague kind of entrapment which said:

 I am here for you.

Where she grew up, her father used to hunt rabbit and deer all the time. It was weekend trips with him to the mountains, walking around with dickersons over their shoes; big, black rubber boots pulled over their footwear and tightened with a zipper. Sexy. In the spring they had trout and turkey. So when PETA came after her in Hollywood for wearing fur, she was surprised, but not really. Those people would mourn anything if it walked.

These days, she’s busy. It may look warm and slow-paced in her home, with a few images for inspiration on her latest project blown up on a board, but that’s décor. She’s been having meetings in every small-time deli and cafe near the recording studios.

Someone wants to pick up one of her stories in a movie adaptation. But she’s in the works of another; a writer, Sandy Eagan, writes about her previous murders in crime novels, misses the palanca but her friend from school, an academy winning director takes it to his producer. Beefy old man, slumps in his office like a hotdog, with locked drawers of scripts and brown box clutter stacked high against the walls. Only the important people see him. 

Catherine was a writer; the real talent. Let all the actresses battle on piles of each other, thousands of girls with their dignities high up when they were back in school brought low in the real world, that male producers called ‘fuckable’. They’re the real women. They’ve got to make the sacrifices to get noticed before their windows started to close at her age.

Call it pursuing a big dream. Nothing was wrong with that, or working two jobs and walking into restaurants with a piece of paper stuck beside the door reading ‘help wanted: waitress’, knowing that these are the places that don’t pay so well, when diners left without tipping and the owners took a cut from the jar.    

Men here just want to fuck you. You’re really nothing more than that. You came here because you liked the lifestyle, and the glamour of how wonderful it all was, having the greatest talents and professionals surrounding you not just in film-making or the arts, but in every possible area. It oozes from every crack, every crevice of every porous brick that laid up the buildings from berkeley to sports to that walk-up condominium that someone is struggling in. You’ll never find that life. The humble life where the right people happen to fall into your path.

Last week at the beach, her lace cover up and sunglasses were stolen. She’d only had her swimsuit on. Congratulations. They got away with a piece of Catherine Tramell’s belongings, a touch of minor unautographed fame just for the sake of it.

‘ Ah. ‘  or, uh. Just a tiny scratch that barely made it out of her voice box.

‘  I’ve never been to Minnesota before. Why’d you move?  ‘

How much did Gaear know about her? He wouldn’t care, how could he, when he didn’t fawn over the allure of stardom. She still takes off her clothes in front of him. Lets them fall off her skin so smoothly it needed to be kissed. Not because she has to for any director or producer.

But because she wants to.

Hi everyone! My name is Nicole Dickerson and I am a rising junior from Wilmington, North Carolina. At the University of South Carolina, I am a nursing major. After undergrad, I hope to get my Master of Science in Family Nurse Practice and become a pediatric nurse practitioner. Outside of school, I love to travel, go to the beach, and to play volleyball. My favorite place I have been to so far has been Honolulu, Hawaii! With this trip, I am looking forward to all of the beautiful beaches and delicious food. I love to try new foods, so I can't wait to do so! Furthermore, while in Greece, I would love to learn more about the Blue Zone (Ikaria) and the Mediterranean Diet. The Dunwich Horror

Daniel Haller’s THE DUNWICH HORROR (1970, Shudder) has been hailed by some as one of the most faithful screen adaptations of an H.P. Lovecraft story, but faithfulness does not necessarily result in a good movie. It sure doesn’t in this case. The script, whose collaborators include Curtis Hanson, adds a female lead to the story, with elder god worshipper Dean Stockwell hypnotizing graduate student Sandra Dee into serving as…well, something or other. It’s not clear whether she’s supposed to be the sacrifice that brings Yog-Sothoth into this realm or the vessel for a new generation of cult members. Maybe he’s hedging his bets and trying to have it both ways. Haller, who was art director for many of producer Roger Corman’s Poe adaptations, is the damnedest director. He’s great with nightmares, atmospheric landscapes and satanic rituals, but when he tries to shoot two people talking, it all goes flat with no clear sense of composition or framing. They’re just there, only there’s no there there. It doesn’t help that Stockwell, who’s supposed to have an hypnotic hold over Dee, seems hypnotized himself. Maybe he was still stoned from his hippie days. Maybe his dissatisfaction with the script resulted in his not even trying to act. But he just does nothing. By contrast, Dee at least has star presence. She’s supposed to be the victim throughout, but her passivity is so compelling you actually miss her when she’s not on screen. The film is primarily of note for containing an early performance from Talia Shire (billed as Talia Coppola) and featuring two members of the Corman stock company, Beach Dickerson and Barboura Morris. Morris is supposed to be a bitter farm woman, but at one point she turns to her dog, who’s being driven mad by the nearness of an otherworldly monster, and says, “What’s the matter, little lamb?” Her delivery has all the warmth she displayed in such under-rated gems as THE WASP WOMAN and BUCKET OF BLOOD (both 1959), and suddenly you’re reminded of how good low-budget horror films can be.
