Barry Harris at the Jazz Workshop is a live album by pianist Barry Harris recorded in San Francisco in 1960 and released on the Riverside label.

Allmusic awarded the album 4 stars with its review by Scott Yanow stating, “Pianist Barry Harris’ second recording as a leader (he led a set for Argo in 1958) finds him at the age of 30 playing in the same boppish style he would have throughout his career”.

<Today's LP> 재즈 황금기를 수놓았던 피아니스트는 수없이 많지만, 아직도 활동하고 있는 뮤지션은 그리 많지 않다. 은퇴했거나 영면하신 분들이 많기 때문이다. 그 몇 명 안되는 피아니스트 가운데 한명인 배리 해리스 옹은 밥 피아니스트의 레전드라 할 수 있는 버드 파웰의 전통을 바로 잇는 피아노 주자이다. 1929년생이시라니, 아흔이 넘으셨는데도, 가끔씩 활동을 하고 계시다는 소식이 전해진다. 그래미 어워드에서 재즈부문 영예상을 수상한 재즈 자이언트의 한명으로서 얼마 안남았으리라 생각되는 해리스 옹의 여생을 추억하면서, 오늘은 1976년 도쿄에서 개최된 라이브 녹음을 수록한 명반이다. 일본 팬들을 위해서 연주한 아츠이 아이죠(Deep Love)를 비롯해서 Round Midnight 등의 스탠다드 곡들을 피로했던 도쿄 공연은 우편저금 회관과 나카노 선플라자 등에서 연주한 작품들을 선별해서 수록했는데, 후에 컴플리트 반이 발매되기도 했다. 드러머 리로이 윌리엄스와 베이시스트 샘 존즈가 함께 한 피아노 트리오는 최강의 호흡을 자랑할만큼 완벽한 연주 실력을 보여줬으며, 밥 스타일을 기반으로 아름다운 멜로디와 정교한 리듬섹션이 잘 조화되는 배리 해리스만이 표현할 수 있는 피아노 트리오의 전형을 잘 드러내고 있다. 배리 해리스에 대해서 이름은 들어봤지만, 그다지 그의 작품을 접해 보지 않았던 재즈 팬들에게 필청음반으로 추천하고 싶은 앨범이며, 재즈 황금기의 추억을 되새기게 하는 배리 해리스 팬들에게는 잊을 수 없는 명반이기도 하다. #music #jazz #BarryHarris #LeroyWillians #SamJones #PianoTrio #TokyoLive #1976 #Xanadu(Koiwa에서) https://www.instagram.com/p/B8LSNMLlGgu/?igshid=1gfu7su7jcb6k

The last 48 hours have been rough: we lost one of the greatest music and cultural critics of the modern day, the single most influential bassist in Jamaican music history, and one of the last true piano talents of the bebop era. 1. @avantgroidd came into my line of sight in the late '80s when my fascination with bands from the downtown scene in Manhattan hit a frenzy, and eventually to his writing in places like the Village Voice, NYT and ArtForum . Greg Tate wrote some of the most blisteringly incisive pop culture observations with a lot of fire and devoid of pretense. He also was a fantastic leader of the outfit Burnt Sugar. 2. Robbie Shakespeare was one half of the single most recorded and broadly influential rhythm sections in pop music history. He, along with Sly Dunbar, played on literally thousands of recordings, with Grace jones, bill laswell, Joe cocker, Mick jagger, Peter tosh, madonna, Bob dylan, simply red, sting, tricky, no doubt...it's staggering. 3. The #BarryHarris image I actually published a few years back, as I was finally starting to get familiar with his contributions to jazz, including stuff he did with Yusef Lateef, and Cannonball Adderley, but his influence is far more extensive, and even though he was almost 92, his death by covid still seems quite tragic. #art #drawingpractice #gregtate #robbieshakespeare #barryharris.
