It's heartening sometimes to realize how incredibly ordinary historical figures looked. If you watch a bunch of period dramas, you come away thinking that history was made exclusively by shockingly attractive people---when actually, famous poets with burnished names look more like Jim, The Local Bank Manager; artists who broke the mold wouldn't look out of place scrolling through their phone on the subway. You could walk past the absurdly wealthy doyennes of society in the grocery store and never give them a second glance.

Rafe and Sofia are sooo Hades and Peresphone coded

Yessss!! Soooo true!! Sofia being the goddess of spring, embodying growth and renewal (things she brings about in rafe) and rafe being the god of the underworld (quite literally causing death as well as being surrounded by it) is sooo perfect.

And people think that Persephone was held against her will in the underworld, but she grew to love Hades, and became his Queen, his wife and his equal, and I think Rafe and Sofia’s relationship is like that. Rafe values her input and advice, and dotes on her lovingly, wanting her to be his wife, despite their differences.

But the darker dynamics of Hades and Persephone also mirror Rafe and Sofia. When he proposed to her, he prompted her to quit her job, leave her house, move in with him, similar to how Hades whisked (kidnapped?) Persephone away to the underworld. But then Rafe leaves her stranded when he tells Sofia to “pack her shit and get out”– paralleling the cruelty of Hades in how he left Persephone unmoored away from her family and everything she knew.

“Did you even take first aid?!” Pope demanded, and shoved John B out of the way. He put his fingers against JJ’s carotid, searching for a beat.
