you need to fix your attention span ♡
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- it is rumoured that human beings have an attention span shorter than a gold fish' . can you believe that such intelligent , amazing creatures as us can't even concentrate for more than 7 seconds ?
Tumblr media
000 , just a short notice
- i apologise for taking so long to post ! life has been so busy and im sorry I left you guys ! also ty for 200 + followers ! i love you guys !
001 , don't have multiple tabs open
- stop having multiple tabs open ! this can cause frequent distractions and decreases your attention span !
002 , minimize multitasking
- just as previously stated , multitasking can help you lose focus on what you're trying to focus on !
003 , create no phone zones
- you don't need to take your phone everywhere with you ( at home ) , create no phone zones to reduce screen time and additionally regain more of an attention span ! no phone zones can be in your washrooms , kitchens & gardens , in those places you can focus on more important things other than your phone!
004 , say I'll do it after [x]
- if you had planned on doing something , do it. just because Jess or Ella asked you to call + play dress to impress + watch tik toks with them , doesn't mean you abandon your work. tell them you'll do it after [x] ( your work ) and just watch your attention span increase !
005 , automate school hours on school
- this chapter is just about using school for work and not for your phone !
006 , be okay with boredom and be curious
- if you're on a road trip or if you're waiting at a doctor's appointment , remember that your phone isn't your last resort ! for entertainment , try and look outside , imagine who has visited the area hundreds of years ago and how much it had changed or if you see any people , imagine their story ! be curious & imaginative !
007  , consume longer content
- watch long form videos til the end ; don't watch it on x2 speed ; don't read comments as you watch it ; don't skip past it ; watch it to its proper ending ! once you get used to focusing on long form content , your attention span will improve !
008 , consume to absorb , not skim
- when watching long - form content , don't skim past important details , watch it to absorb its content + not to get an uninformative gist !

Some blinkies inspired by a post by @aropride here.
Since starting this next semester at university I've been finding joy in life and really cutting back on quick dopamine fixes (I've found the main culprit has been social media). Deleting social media off of my phone and using my laptop instead to interact online has been instrumental to my finding my love of learning again. Making a boundary between me and the internet has helped me realize again that every action is an adventure. Don't waste all of your time scrolling and don't let corporations rob you of your privacy and attention spans.
peace & love to all

Life hack for people with short attention spans:
WATCH DUMB VIDEO ESSAYS!!
I am so goddamn serious. If you have a short attention span, the best thing I've found to help with that is video essays. Please bear with me on this post, or read the tldr:
My attention span was, and still is, totally fucked from my years on the internet and my adhd. I would spend hours on tiktok, instagram reels, yotube shorts, etc, and could barely sit through a TV show episode without opening pintrest to get even more mental stimulation.
But fast-forward to mid-fall last year, where I got really into video essays. Started out with 5 minute "storytime stickmen" videos, then 10 minute explanations of game lore bits, then 15 minute videos on punk subculture stuff, etc, and even though I was still using pintrest and reels relentlessly outside of that, after a little while, I realized that I had stopped pulling out my phone mid-video. The videos were actually grabbing and KEEPING my attention, even if I had little to no prior interest in the subject.
And by now, I've finished multiple 2.5 hour long videos on totally random stuff like the characterization of king candy, the making of a now lost-media tinkerbell movie, weird random stuff in fnaf security breach, etc. Now I actually SEEK OUT these longer videos, and even find myself getting involuntarily disappointed when a video essay I'm watching cuts out at 20 minutes! I actually enjoy sitting through long videos now!
And sure, I don't always watch them in one sitting, but if anything that's even better! I can come back to a video I was in the middle of and STILL keep my attention on it!
This is all to say, you can't just cold-turkey your way out of the instant-dopamine-rush of shortform content. It's just not gonna work. But if you do it gradually, you will likely find yourself getting actually INTERESTED in just the act of watching a longer video. And maybe by extension, you'll find yourself being more engaged in things like your classes because you're already GOOD at being engaged with lectures on random stuff, which will likely make you want to find MORE of that class content (the coursework) because you're used to the information being given for even longer periods of time than the classes are.
Now, this won't work for every type of content, and it obviously won't completely fix your attention span. Hell, I'm still addicted to plenty of online shortform content. But it is undeniably helpful to have even just one facet of your attention span be over an hour.
TLDR (since this IS a post directed at people with short attention spans); I used to have a detrimentally short-as-fuck attention span, but I basically exposure-therapy'd myself into enjoying long videos, and it did WONDERS for my attention span. I want to help you do the same.
So please, for the good of your brain,
WATCH DUMB VIDEO ESSAYS!!!

Honestly, this is more a dunk on my old attention span than anything, but I have started to love watching shows weekly when episodes come out. I used to binge seasons of shows in the span of two days, which is really easy when full seasons are released all together. But last year I was lucky to catch the first (and at the time only) episode of Dungeon Meshi. And gods was I mad when I realised that was it and I had to wait A WHOLE WEEK for the next ep.
I started to tune in every Thursday for my "Dungeon Meshi Time" and I feel like I really got time to savor the show, pun intended. The same happened when Dandadan came out, and I saw the rest of the community celebrate "Dandadan Thursday".
All this to say, we got it right the first time. Bring back weekly episodic shows, 27 seasons, 20-30 minute episodes. You wanna make a 6 episode long show? Grow balls and make a movie. Make two movies.

Having a long list of stuff you want to watch but you'll never be able to because it's just so much and your executive dysfunction and complete lack of attention span just isn't helping :((((((((

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but there’s actually zero evidence that social media makes ADHD worse. Your attention span isn’t short because of anything you’ve done wrong, and trying really hard to concentrate doesn’t train you out of having ADHD. If it did, nobody would still have ADHD past like age 7. There’s a trend of new wave asceticism that seems to have become big on here, and it’s all just bullshit.

Genuinely, as much as I'd love to have a stack of books I've finished at the end of the year, I much more hope that I've cultivated the habit of reading most days if not every day.
I know what scrolling reels and shorts endlessly has done to my brain and attention span (TikTok ain't special in that regard), and I want to try to fix it. It just feels overwhelming right now.

I want longer games. (rant post)
(please keep in mind that i am an autistic individual who has loved to play video games for my entire life since i was able to walk, i prefer to be in a constant state of flow and not be interrupted by sudden overstimulating visuals or short runtimes ending abruptly.)
to accommodate for the low attention spans of the new generation, many new releases since 2021 have been short and formulaic with a repetitive gameplay loop. (often overly colorful and vibrant) it’s as if the developers are catering only to retention, rather than actual creativity and challenge.
the thing about these games is that they’re usually round-based, with short bursts of (maybe) minute-long gameplay. now, i’ve played similar games like this and the problem is that they’re piss easy, and there’s barely any sort of strategy or learning curve. the skill progression is like the inflation stats for Arizona Ice Tea, still and stagnant. some of these games have potential, but only aim to appeal to the lowest common denominator.
it might be the next big thing for companies to make every game an endless treadmill of rewards all for a quick buck, but at what cost to gaming culture? whatever happened to games that rewarded you for making big progress and learning something new along the way? where did all the hella cool mechanics go? to me, video games are an art perfected only by a select few, as a person who spends most of his free time playing video games and getting into things that i can see myself enjoying for years. if i’m being an ass for not accepting that people have the attention span of a goldfish, so be it! i’m not the audience for these games, and i just want new, long games to devote my time to.
if you want to play a game that has fast gameplay and/or colorful visuals, but also has lots of gameplay and content, definitely play Pizza Tower or Bloons TD6. they’re my personal favorites and you should try them too.

It’s really scaring me, the way that people out here, in much much higher numbers AND amounts in one person, seem to have not just like. Literacy issues, but even BASIC COMPREHENSION issues when speaking and listening (barely) to you.
At work I ask a simple either/or question all day every day. Would you like to (x) or (y). I get told “No” almost every time. Because all that they listened to were the first few words, IF that.
One coworker of mine among a sea of WASPs is a black fella and he asked how I was today. I started out by mentioning having trouble adjusting since moving— then I told him straight up and mentioned my family and cultural differences being an issue since moving out here. And was like “Idk how you do it out here man.” He just said (paraphrasing but barely) that his daughter is real crazy and different like that and he could understand… …… ……………. ………………………. I didn’t say *I* was different, my personality (though it is). I was talking about much bigger factors here
I get that people avoid direct conversation but it legit felt like every other convo I have out here. With anyone of any background
Like listening is NOT happening and people lack even a basic vocabulary to boot…? Like I truly don’t know how I can speak (or write) so plainly and simply and still run into this again and again and again and again. This has never happened anywhere else I have lived.
I am not remotely using my full vocabulary or anything. And this still happens. It’s like they just give up. Seconds in. Or… Before even starting.
Every single time
I am only like half an hour outside of the city, living here. A pretty similar/nearly the same amount with other places, before, too, though…so….
What the fuck gives
Like new levels of denseness and even like. Uncuriosity. Lack of desire to even HAVE the conversation that we are having.
Not to even get into the people I live with….
I’m losing it man. WTF.

Continuation on a previous reblog, but I think we all need to just admit that Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, Youtube Shorts etc are straight up Bad.
Like sure some people have found friends and community on there etc. but I look at how many more people are going “I feel like shit every day, I’m wasting my life on these apps and I hate it and can’t get out” and I watch execs perfect their attention-grabbing machines to squeeze every last bit of dopamine out of children for advertiser dollars with no considerations of the effects (spoiler: they’re not good.)
Idk maybe I’m biased as someone who spend their teenage-hood on these apps due to social isolation, but watching my younger (and older!) family members get sucked into the same soul-numbing shit I’ve been struggling with for YEARS makes it impossible for me to act like these apps have any justification for existing. I think I hate them.
