Maybe Hindsight is something, but I'm watching Season 2 of Supergirl again, and I agree there were fundamental flaws in the basic construction of how they chose to use Mon-el (and I still don't ship Karamel), but... what he actually does? The way the story uses Kara and Mon-el? Their relationship? It's really good, and it's as much, or even more about showcasing Kara, and her strengths and depths and how she changes Mon-el, as it is about Mon-el and his development.

There was so much screeching about Mon-el back when season 2 was airing, and I always knew it was silly, but I forgot just how silly it was.

I was thinking about the plight of AI messing with my research and ability to sift through the internet when it hit me:

Would this affect Tim Drakes Detective skills?

(Personally, I think Oracle would make safe guards around her security and avoid that, but it wouldn’t affect her ability to hack into cameras and stuff.)

But imagine Tim researching through cold cases, finding an article with a similar name and….

It was completely AI generated. He spent hours trying to find the source, only to search up the website and URL to see that it was completely AI generated.

This happens again. And again. To the point that eight out of ten ‘finds’ lead back to ChatGPT. He has to create more and more blockers to weed out the sources connected to AI. But they keep coming. And now his research is at a standstill.

Cold cases remain closed as he peers through the library for the hard copies. No longer trusting the internet.

A few weeks later, Jason is investigating a call about a homeless person taking up residence in the library. He’s already discussed with Babs about placement options so the guy can have a real home, has a couple of flyers and some food to entice them out.

This would have been Cass’s job, but she’s trying to find an AWOL Tim who went off radar last week with the Cryptic message: “Recalibrating brain. Will rejoin once source information recovered. Damian is covering my shift.”

He climbs up to the offending alcove and finds troves of energy drinks, spread out papers with chicken scratch writing, and a frantic Tim Drake whose eyes are so sunk in that Jason thinks he’s half dead.

“Tim?”

A batarang shoots past his face in reply and Jason slowly lowers himself back down.

“I found Tim.” Jason tells the comms.

After much talking and the help of the whole batfamily they talk Tim down and into a secure Dick Grayson hug hold where he promptly passes out.

When he recovers, they learn about the endless deluge of AI.

Bruce promises to work on more Anti-AI safeguards.

Jason, Cass and Steph look at each other, and back at Tim.

Taking down servers doesn’t break the ‘No-Kill Rule’ right? AI has no soul. Besides, it will help out Tim, he’s already peeking up at the idea.

Babs gives her approval.

“I won’t tell Bruce. Keep me in the loop.”

Duke promises to distract the Bat and fill in their patrols. Damian launches his most powerful distraction weopon: Bonding time.

Forty-Eight hours later Bruce finds them passed out in the family room while a blaring headline flashes across the TV.

DEATH OF AI: VIGILANTES DESTROY TECH SERVERS

(Strangely enough, only the artificial generating servers were affected. News reports this as a sign to put more focus onto analytical ai for cancer research.)

Bruce adds another contingency plan and moves Cass and Duke up on the ‘Potential BatRogue’ chart. Stipulation: Will commit crimes for siblings. He’s not exactly disappointed. He’s more than impressed at Dukes ability to mimic his kids nighttime patrols routes.

He puts Tim next to Jason on the ‘Batrogues’ tracker. He knew this day would come. At least they didn’t kill anybody.

Steph has her own chart titled: ‘Enablers’. This chart was made her first month as Robin. Dick was on it briefly before he learned to set boundaries with Damian.

And, with much deliberation, he moves Damian on it as well. He may have the excuse of being ‘on patrol’, but Bruce knows Damian’s views. Plus that sudden inquiry to go to the zoo ‘father and son.’ And effective distraction.

Dick gets put in the ‘Informant’ category. A sad, sad place to be. Bruce shakes his head. He would rather his kids trust Dick with their plans, as a backup. He holds onto the hope that Dick helped Duke on patrols.

Bruce smiles. All in all, his family is getting along. There will be media backlash and lectures to be had, but he’s proud. They did good.

He closes the ‘Family Memories’ folder and gets back to work. He’s still Batman, after all.

The only way me as an author would react to people shipping stuff from my work, whatever the ship, apart from delight, is if they were shipping something very incomprehensible to me, or the like, and even then, it would be 'did I do something different than what I intended with my writing or are fans just being fans?

Like, if I set out to make character X utterly repulsive and not even in a fun way, as a character, and write nothing that I think can even be remotely read as romantic or sexual or whatever between X and Y, and I find out X/Y is the juggernaut ship of the fandom, I would at least want to know what I wrote that made people think that makes sense.

But I wouldn't be morally outraged over people doing something weird and "gross" with my characters.

Sophia is a made up fictional Black person, not an actual human being. She's eViL because Wildbow is a white supremacist, and if you fall for it, so are you.

Uhm...

I mean, she's not real, that's true, and she's a psycho because Wildbow wrote her that way, that's true (That is how fictional characters work) but it doesn't follow inherently from there that Wildbow is a white supremacist.

That's a lot of assumptions and leaps of logic you just glide over. Writing a character who is black as a psycho is not inherently racist. There's some racist stereotyping baggage in how he describes Sophia sometimes, true, but that's more 'accidental linguistic baggage in the English speaking world due to longstanding heavy racism and still present low-key racism nearly omnipresent in our society' than deliberate malice

I don't think the evidence supports the idea that Wildbow is any more racist than your average well-intentioned nominally progressive white canadian guy who doesn't self-examine much.

Which is to say he no doubt has unexamined baggage and notions, but he does try and he certainly isn't white supremacist.

Also, like, what do you mean by 'fell for it'? She's fake. All she exists as is the writing on the page. There's no deeper reality there than what she has on the page. It's fun to construct deeper realities for characters using the text (as I do for Amy), and if you want to do that for Sophia, sure, go for it, but the text as written, the character as she exists, is pretty fucking delusional.

We can discuss whether or not writing a character like Sophia represents some broader issues, especially when you add in characters like Skidmark and Thomas Calvert and how they're written, etc, but the character herself is still a fucking psycho.

Not sure I can really call this 'hate' because it's not, per se, but it definitely gets a -5/10 for just... generalized stupidity.

Ememy Vs. Abuser: Catradora

Disclaimer: Netflix doesn't allow me to take screenshots. I tried to find clips on Youtube but a lot of these are stolen. And an obvious tw for abuse.

When Catradora antis bring up how Catra abused Adora in seasons 1-4, a lot of people seem to be confused. The go-to defense is the following:

"Catra and Adora were enemies, they were put against each other in many battles. The 'abuse' is just what you'd normally expect from enemies to lovers".

A complelling argument, for sure. How can you expect of Catra to not be violent with someone who was put against her? The answer to this question can be answered through a different question: Why is Catra the abuser? Why not Adora?

What's the difference between an enemy, and an abuser?

1# The aggressor is particularly cruel to their future partner.

Catra doesn't use her claws on real people very often. She mostly uses them on objects or robots (or Shadow Weather's mask).

At times, it's clear tnat she would gain a lot from using her claws, but she doesn't.

One might suggest that it's because she understands the full weight of using them. Whatever the case may be, there is a person she doesn't seem to have these reservations about: Adora.

2# Their intreractions contain emotional abuse.

Catra often blames Adora for things that aren't her fault. She's cruel to Adora, deliberately and viciously hurts her.

She makes mean spirited remarks and belittles her.

Additionally, Catra gaslit her.

And wouldn't you know it, she takes pride in having control over Adora.

3# There is no balance.

As we previously established, Catra has no problem being needlessly cruel to Adora. But is Catra in the same danger? It it at least mutually toxic?

It's not. Adora can fight and defend herself, but won't do more than she needs. Meanwhile, Catra seem to relish in brutalizing her.

Further more, moments that could be considered romantic build up in their own, "spicy" way, are positioned with Catra on top, where Adora has no choice but to comply, where she's stuck there.

4# The aggressor got in the victim's head.

Adora has a guilt complex. That's not a controversial take. She takes too much responsibility and thinks everything is her fault. A lot of this stems from Shadow Weaver, but there's another source.

And Adora is very quick to internalize her cruel remarks.

In Conclusion:

Catra and Adora's relationship can and was abusive during the war. They share specific patterns of abusive relationships even at war zone. Catra hurting Adora isn't all war stuff, it's personal, it's abusive.

I guess I'm gonna have to ask every Anti I see if they're high.

I tried marijuana and (hear me out) it gave me some interesting insight into how purity culture minds might work.

While I was high, the boundary between thought and act/speech felt very flimsy. I was fully aware of what I was thinking without acting on, but thoughts actually felt emotionally identical to speech or actions.

I played a video game and when I thought nice things about other players it felt exactly identically the same as putting those thoughts into a public text chat. Ditto negative or uncharitable thoughts. I noticed that another player's character was very attractive and it felt exactly and precisely the same as hitting on him. Thinking that his character was cute felt skeevy and wrong, because it would have been inappropriate to send a perfect stranger a horny DM in a context where it wasn't reasonable to expect that he was looking for ERP.

Similarily, I got a little annoyed with another player's habit of running ahead of the group, and that felt exactly the same as if I'd called him rude names in public. And I appreciated yet another player's friendly chat, and that felt exactly the same as if I'd told her so, even though during all of this I said absolutely nothing in chat and no one noticed me at all (unless they noticed that I was playing poorly beause duh, I was high).

So if antis have that lack of distinction between thought and deed as their baseline, then that explains (but does not excuse) why they're so keen on thought police nonsense. It doesn't excuse it because if you aren't zonked out of your gourd, you can intellectually understand that thoughts aren't deeds even if they feel that way in the moment.

glimmadora vs catradora: making mistakes and taking responsibility

when glimmer hurt adora, adora was allowed to stay mad at glimmer. she was allowed to prioritize her own feelings and not worry about trying to stay on glimmer's good side.

and when glimmer hurt adora, glimmer took the initiative to try and apologize to adora multiple times. she immediately recognized her mistake and felt terribly guilty for what she said. and while she did initially get annoyed after adora ignored her attempts at apology, she still made sure to properly apologize afterwards.

when catra hurts adora, adora is always the one who has to seek out catra and apologize to her or try to console her. adora was never the one at fault in these scenarios, yet she always had to be the bigger person and disregard her own feelings in favor of catra's.

and when catra hurts adora, catra never acknowledges her mistake. she never even looks guilty, let alone try to apologize to adora or make amends. she goes off to sulk because she knows that adora would eventually give in and apologize for something that isn't her fault.

and then the one time catra does make the initiative to seek out adora after a fight, this is what she says:

keep in mind, this was after catra abandoned adora. but sure, glimmadora is toxic.
