Anti-infectives are drugs that are used to act on the body against invading foreign organisms, especially those that can cause infection. Anti-infectives act on invading organisms in a number of ways. Over time, invading pathogens develop resistance to anti-infectives. Resistance is the ability to adapt to an anti-infectious drug over time and produce cells that are no longer affected by a particular drug. Anti-infectives like metronidazole, clindamycin, tigecycline, linezolid, and vancomycin work against many types of bacteria that have become resistant to other antibiotics. THE BENEFITS OF IVERMECTIN. IF YOU HAVE CANCER, FREQUENT COLD OR INFECTIONS, MUSCLE SHRINKAGE, CARDIAC ISSUES, CROHNS, HERPES, ETC.
The study was published in the Cureus Journal of Medical Science. LET'S TALK ABOUT IVERMECTIN 1 â Ivermectin prevents the damage caused to RNA Vaccines. 2 â Ivermectin blocks the entry of Spike Protein into cells. So, if the person was vaccinated with COVID, they have hope, they have a way to treat themselves through Ivermectin. 3 â Ivermectin is a treatment after Covid and after vaccination, it is an effective medicine in all phases of Covid 19, even before entering the cell, Ivermectin already destroys the virus in the blood. It only has beneficial effects and no harmful effects in the treatment of the coronavirus. 4 â Ivermectin has a very powerful anti-inflammatory action against Coronavirus. 5 â Ivermectin has a powerful action for traumatic and orthopedic injuries, it strengthens muscles and has no side effects like corticosteroids. 6 â Ivermectin treats autoimmune ailments such as: rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, fibromyalgia, psoriasis, Crohn's disease, allergic rhinitis. 7 â Ivermectin reduces the frequency of flu and colds. 8 â Ivermectin improves the immunity of cancer patients. 9 â Ivermectin treats Herpes Simplex and Herpes Zoster. 10 â Ivermectin reduces the frequency of sinusitis and diverticulitis. 11 â Ivermectin protects the heart in cardiac overload, in an embolism for example, it prevents cardiac hypoxia because it stimulates the production of basic energy so that the tissue is not destroyed and thus improves cardiac function. 12 â Ivermectin is antiparasitic. 13 â Ivermectin is anti-neoplastic (anti-cancer), it suppresses the proliferation and metastasis of cancer cells, only killing cancer cells and preserving healthy cells, improving the effectiveness of chemotherapy treatment, as it kills cancer cells resistant to chemotherapy, defeating the resistance to multiple chemotherapeutics that tumors develop, and combined with chemotherapy and/or anti-cancer agents, it provides an increase in the effectiveness of these treatments. 14 â Ivermectin is antimicrobial (bacteria and viruses), and increases immunity. 15 â Ivermectin reaches the Central Nervous System and regenerates the nerves. 16 â Ivermectin regulates glucose and insulin metabolism. 17 â Ivermectin regulates cholesterol metabolism. 18 â Ivermectin reduces liver fat in steatose. 19 â Ivermectin protects the liver exposed to insecticides. 20 â Ivermectin attacks the virus wherever it is, regardless of mutations. 21 â Ivermectin serves for the prevention and treatment of coronavirus, surprisingly. Unproven efficacy is not of Ivermectin, but of vaccines. 22 â Ivermectin, used as a prophylactic agent, was associated with a significant reduction in infection, hospitalization and mortality rates due to COVID-19. 23 - Ivermectin does not attack the liver, since it is not metabolized in it, and if in the intestine, on the contrary, it protects the liver.Â

Caitlyn's Objectives for Zaun are Vague and Terrible.
"Locate Jinx."
Plenty of people have already talked about this one, but there's a clear "and" missing to this statement. Caitlyn isn't going to just find Jinx say mission accomplished and go back to Piltover. She's left her intentions for Jinx ambiguous to her superiors (Ambessa) and subordinates alike, which leaves room for the situation to escalate.
"Dismantle shimmer."
I cannot overstate how bad of an idea it is. It seems simple in excution. Secure the refineries, detain Singed and other chemists that manufacture it, and destroy any existing supplies. But everything else that comes with it will turn the situation even worse.
I'm not even talking about the fact that Caitlyn is suggesting everyone in Zaun addicted to shimmer immediately go cold turkey without warning, preparation, or their consent. It's that fact that she's essentially destroying the only form of healthcare infrastructure that exists in Zaun.
For all the bad shimmer can do, it's still an effective medicine when used right. It's not a coincidence that once Silco took over and introduced shimmer there's suddenly people with visible disabilities and prosthetics on screen existing in Zaun. They exist because shimmer makes it possible. Even 5 out the 6 chembarons, the richest and most powerful people in Zaun, are disabled or use mobility aids. Chembarons like Smeech quite obviously use shimmer (his eyes are pink in every scene including his character sheet) to manage his prosthetics, he's had all four limbs replaced.
How many people live like Silco, with a chronic illness (probably a dangerous infection because Zaun is Piltover's human/industrial wastepit) that needs to be treated daily? How many people are practically dead and buried if the enforcers manage to destroy all remaining shimmer?
"Neutralize any agents still loyal to Silco."
What does that even mean? What does being loyal to Silco mean when he's dead? They're getting rid of all infrastructure related to shimmer production. The only thing that remains of Silco that anyone can be loyal to is the belief he left behind (and maybe Jinx but that's complicated).
Above all else (except Jinx), Silco wanted an independent Zaun. Will That's his whole thing, and shimmer was just the mechanism to make it happen. Will anyone who agrees that Zaun should be independent be considered a Silco loyalist? If so, then Caitlyn's mission isn't just about finding Jinx and getting shimmer off the streets, this is about crushing an independence movement AGAIN.
How will she characterize Silco's loyalists? Is she talking about chembarons that worked with Silco? Former members of his gang? People who worked in Silco's factories and liked the paycheck? Silco was the defacto leader of Zaun, most if not all figures in Zaun with influence were essentially complicit in his agenda.
Is there any real difference between anti-Piltovan sentiment and pro-Zaunite independence at this point?
#arcane#arcane meta#caitlyn kiramman#these are all just vague justifications to establish an occupation in zaun#those check points in the teaser don't look like temporary structures#they're there to further restrict the movement of zaunites not just at the bridge now but in the city itself#caitlyn is going to gum this whole thing up and it's no surprise Vi can't show her face in zaun#these are all vague and poorly thought through objectives that have no timelines and/or will escalate tensions in zaun against piltover#do you think children in zaun will make snappy rhymes to make fun of caitlyn and her mom#you think jinx will edit some of them#this is all based on the teaser so things could change#mostly a rant

Random Doctor Who Facts You Might Not Know, Part 72: More Academy and Pre-Leaving Gallifrey Stuff Because Why Not
Sorry I'm in too my pain to come up with a better title right now lmaooo. Mostly about the Doctor because they occupy the mind.
As a small child, Theta Sigma had an imaginary friend named Binker. (Audio: The Abandoned)
Later, the Sixth Doctor claimed that while most people had imaginary friends, he had had an imaginary enemy in Mandrake the Lizard King, which was really a dead lizard pinned to old engine parts that he would battle with his deadly stick. This phrasing suggests that the Sixth Doctor does not acknowledge any imaginary friends his childhood self might have had. (Audio: The Widow's Assassin)
The Rani claimed that sentimentality was the reason the Doctor graduated with "just a Double Gamma." (Audio: The Rani Elite)
According to Sardon, the Doctor is no common criminal because by the latter years of his first incarnation was a distinguished member of the High Council and was widely regarded as a potential President. He was difficult and rebellious, however, and went too far when he quarreled with his colleagues over something obscure over principle. He then stole an old Type 40 TARDIS and fled. (Novel: World Game)
The Seventh Doctor claimed that he had always believed evil to be a genuine force. This had given his young self quite a name on Gallifrey as most of his contemporaries considered the ideas of "good" and "evil" to be archaic and out-dated. They thought his preoccupation with that morality was incomprehensible. (Novel: Strange England)
Before leaving Gallifrey, the Doctor had successfully campaigned for the ban of a special chemical. This chemical was a weapon sometimes called a disruptor agent that acts as a catalyst to convert vertebrate blood into acid. The formula for the chemical stuck in his brain well enough that the Second Doctor was able to later recreate it. (Short story: The Ages of Ambition)
The Doctor had made powerful enemies on Gallifrey on account of his controversial views on the non-interference policy. (Audio: The Beginning)
The Doctor was told stories about the Kin when he was a small boy on Gallifrey. The Time Lords imprisoned the Kin in a complex of small rooms out of temporal phase with the rest of the universe. So long as the Time Lords existed, the Kin would be in their prison. When the Kin got out, there was still a Time Lord left in the universe - the Eleventh Doctor. (Short story: Nothing O'Clock)
In his youth, the Doctor feared that Grandfather Paradox was hiding under his bed or underneath the table in the refectory or making noises he could hear outside at night. (Novel: The Gallifrey Chronicles)
As a young man, the Doctor read about an infection on Gallifrey that had happened over one thousand years before his birth. The Spore - which was actually the von Neumann seeding probe - killed several hundred thousand Time Lords before it was dealt with. The Time Lords engineered an inherited immunity into their genes, so they would never be vulnerable again. Everything organic seemed to be necrotic and decaying to a black gunk. (Please skip to next bullet point if you are squeamish about descriptions of bodies.) When the Eighth Doctor investigated an outbreak, he found a body wearing boots, jeans, and a checkered shirt. Inside the clothes was a mess of bones barely held together by a few pieces of remaining flesh. The skull had a few pieces of white hair, but the scalp and other pieces of soft organic matter were gone as black slime ran out of the cuffs. (Short story: Spore)
The Doctor used to sit by the sea a lot in their childhood, watching and listening to it. He used to think that that was where the dead went, that they were all out there in the sea, and that you could hear them whispering in the waves. (Novel: Matrix)
Three students at the Academy who often conducted rebellious and anti-hierarchical activities include: the Master, whose title was earned from his constant bullying of others, a good cosmic theoretician but but not very good in practice; the Doctor, who often carried out silly chemical experiments with a friend called Drax; and the Rani, who "was brilliant at everything, and chemistry in particular." (Short story: The Legacy of Gallifrey)

One of the biggest reasons we have to push back on the harmful rhetoric that covid is "just a cold." It's not.
Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, has profoundly impacted global health, affecting not only the immediate morbidity and mortality rates but also long-term health outcomes across various populations. Although the acute effects of COVID-19 on the respiratory system have initially been the primary focus, it is increasingly evident that the virus can have significant impacts on multiple physiological systems, including the nervous and immune systems. The pandemic has highlighted the complex interplay between viral infection, immune aging, and brain health, that can potentially accelerate neuroimmune aging and contribute to the persistence of long COVID conditions. By inducing chronic inflammation, immunosenescence, and neuroinflammation, COVID-19 may exacerbate the processes of neuroimmune aging, leading to increased risks of cognitive decline, neurodegenerative diseases, and impaired immune function. Key factors include chronic immune dysregulation, oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and the disruption of cellular processes. These overlapping mechanisms between aging and COVID-19 illustrate how the virus can induce and accelerate aging-related processes, leading to an increased risk of neurodegenerative diseases and other age-related conditions. This mini-review examines key features and possible mechanisms of COVID-19-induced neuroimmune aging that may contribute to the persistence and severity of long COVID. Understanding these interactions is crucial for developing effective interventions. Anti-inflammatory therapies, neuroprotective agents, immunomodulatory treatments, and lifestyle interventions all hold potential for mitigating the long-term effects of the virus. By addressing these challenges, we can improve health outcomes and quality of life for millions

A DC X DP IDEA #9 The Nightgaleâs
Imagine thisâŚ
Here we have a three-way relationship between Vlad, Maddie, and Jack. The grandfather Clockwork, the children which consist of Jazz, Dan, Danny, and Dani, and a morally gray Fenton clan. The Fentonâs might be descendants of the witches from the Salem trials but what about the name Nightgale?
It was not well-known knowledge that the name Nightgale is a well-known yet old name in the underworld. If you want information, firearms, drugs, protection, and many more it is the Nightgale that you should go as they have been ruling the underground for the past centuries building up their empire from scratch. Ruthless to those they consider their enemies, and saviors to those who are under their care.
Rogues from different parts of the world as well the rogues that the JL members are having trouble as well they pay their respects to the Nightgaleâs as the last example namely the Joker disrespected them in the face, got paler, and found at the inch of death and they never mentioned nor crossed territories with them. Lex who tried his shot, almost got an aneurysm due to the fact that a single member of that family merely got to his most secured safe house and waved a black USB in front of him that will destroy him after a tongue lashing as that person explained in the politest voice, he ever heard threatening his entire empire.
âŚ
Danny shouldnât know whether to feel ecstatic or not, on one hand, his parents had accepted him as Phantom, and the number of tears and hugs involved was never to be talked about again. On the other Vladâs wish came true, how? well, it was when Vlad realized that the reason, he hated his dad for so long is because he was stuck in the pulling the girlâs pig-tails phase. Instead of elementary, it started during their college time together up until now.
Now that both Maddie and Jack knew that both Danny and Vlad are halfas as well realizing his feelings and being added to the family due to the short and small wedding that the three of them had. Vlad revealed that he has children from Jack, namely Dani, and Dan, which sparked an argument between Maddie and Vlad, something he wouldnât imagine seeing before, about who made their significant other happier or even loved more.
But the problems of the newly made family donât end there. GIW agents began appearing more frequently and being more aggressive as they leave a destructive path to find Phantom as they believe that he is the most powerful of them all and needed to be eradicated.
Moving to a place where there is an abundance of ectoplasm in the air well-being able to mask their presence as the rest of the members who isnât a ghost are infected to a certain degree that the GIW considered them as part of the Anti-Ecto laws. Jack told the family to go back to his birthplace as well going back to the family business to protect themselves from the GIW.
Danny had blinked at that statement he thought that the Fentonâs were descendants of witches that survived the Witch Trials and had made their settlement here in Amity when they had initially escaped.
Jack admitted he never wanted such an environment his future family can get into but seeing that their opponent is the government itself he realized that those secrets from his past can now keep his family safe.
He changed his last name to Fenton when he moved city in hope that their enemies may never find the true heir of the Nightgaleâs. Ever since he was a kid, he dreamed of living a normal life with a normal family. Donât get him wrong he loves the family where he was raised but lives a life where everyone will not kill you nor acknowledge you for having a fancy last name. With the support of his family, he embarked on his journey the moment he turned 14, creating a fake identity complete with paperwork that no one would the keenest eyes can make out whether it is real or fake.
Created a nonexistent identity with history in one of the most secluded areas in the world. Secured an identity and was able to intermingle and blend in with the locals to the point he was considered one of them despite not being a local.
Jack explained that being a normal person is quite hard as he was raised in a quite not-so-normal house. When he saw that being a ghostbuster/ scientist is an actual branch of science he immediately took the subject as his cover for his unusual strength, intelligence as well the fact that carries various exotic-looking weapons that can be brushed off as ways to contain ecto-entities.
What he didnât think through is to be actually interested in the topic to the point he wrote an entire thesis and book about the so-called ghosts. Nor the fact he was able to create a gateway to another dimension on the said subject, married to people who saw and took interest in the said subject, have his son become that said entity as well having an entire family including him to be dead or infected in some sort of shape or form, he still remembers the way he jokingly thought to himself that he only suppose took as a joke as well being a cover seeing that nobody will actually take him seriously or even suspect him as a Nightgale if he took such career path where they were called mad and a joke by the science community itself.
âŚ
Racing through the roads using the GAV with an injured Vlad and Danny on the tow along with the entire Fentonâs, Jack raced to Gotham with the only people who he thought can help them.
Apparently, Plasmius was caught by the GIW and was in the middle of live dissection when Phantom broke through the door and rescued the Fruit loop, he may still have slight anger issues towards the man for all the troubles he caused for Danny but the fact he was getting better and made his parents happy made him give the Fruit loop one last chance, but he never said that being petty is off the table.
Rushing in without a plan ended up with him being shoot and skewered a bunch of times but it was his supposed step-fatherâs life on the line here and he wouldnât dare to give up.
Releasing as well as destroying everything they have on Ghosts is now a requirement to each GIW facility they encountered may also be a factor on why he now has a bleeding shoulder.
Upon entering Gotham borders they were greeted with chaos, Lady Luck was with them that day as well Lady Gotham, there had been a mass Arkham breakout and each Bat is busy containing the destruction and chaos around Gotham that they didnât see a weirdly shaped vehicle racing through Downtown Gotham.
Lady Gotham had covered the vehicle with her shadows as she had felt her king and his father in great danger and protected the family from his knights and cities by steering away her knights and destroying any cameras that have caught them.
Knocking franticly on a wooden door of a fairly large house at the just edges of the border of Gotham, a lean young man wearing what looks like a butlerâs uniform opened the door and was surprised to see Jack carrying a bloodied teen on his arms and an even bloodier man on his back, behind him a multitude of people carrying various emotions like anger, worry, scared and exhaustion in their faces, the mysterious young man immediately ushered the entire group inside the house.
âŚ
Elias Nightgale never thought that he would ever see his son again, nor he expected to have the first meeting between him as well his grandchildren in such a manner.
He knew the existence of his grandchildren as he and Jack had been exchanging letters sick Jack decided to look at the world.
Barking orders his men to guard the premise as well as the group that came with Jack, calling in each of his men to learn everything that his son looks like has hidden from him because last time he checks he used to have only 2 grandchildren it seems now they have multiplied.
Calling in on a family meeting made every Nightgale member from immediate cousins, aunts, and uncles to their great uncles and aunts as well as cousins who were once or thrice removed.
Never once the entire family ever saw the day the current head Elias Nightgale of the Nightgale family ever called for a family emergency family meeting, so they dropped everything and went to the main base where they were greeted by Jackâs family with clear exhaustion and worry etched on their faces.
âŚ
Jack began explaining to his dad what he might forget to write in their monthly exchange of letters.
Explaining about the ghosts, his son and spouse, and additional members as well as having an entire branch of government hunting them down just for existing.
It was twice that Jack had seen such murderous rage painted on his fatherâs space, first when he was tortured and kidnapped by an opposing group and the 2nd one today.
Elias Nightgale as well as the rest of the family are now ready to raid, destroy and raid everything to the ground, but Jazz had stopped them as attacking them might have the blame put on the ghost and have an entirely powered hero after them.
âŚ
When Danny woke up and had gotten better, he was ushered to meet up with his paternal grandfather. Upon arriving at the study room he took his time to observe each of his family members, he is quite curious when he saw that his grandfather was 6ft at most and now questioned where his dad had gotten his height, but he saw a beautiful yet scarily tall 6 and 12 ft red-haired woman with the brightest hazel eyes he ever saw immediately concluded that she is his grandmother.
They have discussed that while he and his other father were unconscious that it is best to stay at the home of the Nightgaleâs to have some sort of protection against the GIW as not only did they have the latest technology but also nobody wanted to mess with the Nightgaleâs
âŚ
Jackâs family is now intergraded into the Nightgaleâs completely, despite the black dealings around them they didnât bat an eye, as they have developed morally grey morals from the past years, they even had their own roles.
Jack Nightgale became the head of weapon making, using a new type of energy while masking the ectoplasm signature of it pose a problem but was able to overcome, now the Nightgaleâs now have one of the most dangerous weapons that were ever made and begin strictly monitoring each one.
Maddie became part of the assassination section of the Family Business, with a ninth-degree black belt as well as a marksman made her the perfect assassin that specifically hunts down rapists and child murderers as well GIW agents that dared to hunt down their families.
Vlad Masters who is currently on par with being the richest man in the country focused on his business, as much as he loved his in-laws, he made such that Vlad Co. stays up and running as well as able to thrive. They needed a continuous flow of funds to be able to renovate the house to a mini-mansion to accommodate the small family, complete with built-in security from both humans and ghosts.
Dan began training the guards as well as being one of their heavy hitters, always out with a mission for their family as well the one sent out to check on the familyâs business and dealings in and out of the country.
Jazz has a normal job as a physiatrist building her own little clinic near Criminal alley during the day but by night she is one of the best information specialists gatherers. In interrogation is where she blossoms playing the minds of her victims into telling her the information they hold.
Danny began his training in both being the heir of the Infinite Realms as well the potential next head of the Nightgaleâs, Danny pointed out that he is the middle child but sadly all of his siblings voted him as the next head of the family. Â Training that included weapon handling and execution, using and not using his ghost powers as an advantage, briefings with high-profile people, and private instruction from "constitutional experts".
Lastly, Dani, who is un doubly the best spy there is, able to slip into about anything and able to extract information without alerting their intended target. Having the ability to engage with others as naturally, adaptive, and highly functioning as possible. As a spy, social interaction will take numerous forms, requiring her to be comfortable engaging with people from many walks of life.
âŚ
Batman sat in front of the Bat computer for an hour still reviewing the new case about the Nightgaleâs.
During his teen years, he was saved by one of their own as his ancestor as well as the first holder of the Wayne name had a long-standing relationship between the Waynes and Nightgaleâs, thus saving the heir of the Waynes seemed only right and they have already taken the liberty of torturing and killing his parentâs murderer.
As much as he wanted to cut off any ties the Wayne family between to the Nightgale. It is quite impossible as his family has allotted a considerable size of life debts towards the Nightgaleâs and opted to merely watch and observe the family.
It has been a year and a half since their activity has spiked as well as the new cruelty towards specific people who all wore white suits with black shades, having been brutally killed before dumping their bodies. They are still killing people in their usual kills as well as the people who had dared to defy them to the point of extreme torture.
It was also been 6 months since he and his entire family decided to investigate the recent killings of the Nightgales.
It has also been 9 months since Red Hood joined and helped the Nightgaleâs in the crusade of killing the people who wore white suits and black shades.
It has also been a year since the new students of the Gotham family aka the Adia siblings namely Jasmine, Danny, and Dani Adia became close friends as civilians of some of the members of the Bat-family.
Just what are the Nightgale's are up to and what are the Adia Siblings hiding?

Magic Bullets: The Antibiotic Story
The year was 1907 and a Dr. Alfred Bertheim was trying to make arsenic less toxic to humans.
Why? Because in addition to killing humans, arsenic also kills trypanosomes- single-celled protozoa that cause the life-threatening infection trypanosomiasis. By creating a version of arsenic that still killed the protozoa, but not the human they infected, Dr. Bertheim could create a drug to treat the disease*.
This was not a fully new idea. About 50 years earlier, a drug called Atoxyl had been created in France. About 40 times less toxic than pure arsenic, it had been shown to not only successfully treat trypanosomiasis, but also the equally devastating syphilis infection.
But 40 times less toxic than pure arsenic is still not great. About 2% of people treated even one time with the drug ended up blind, among a myriad of other side effects. It was a start, but not ideal.
And Dr. Bertheim (under the direction of better-known Dr. Paul Ehrlich) was setting out to change that.
And it just so happened that the sixth compound from the sixth group he tried did so. Known as "compound 606", the new Arsphenamine could treat trypanosomiasis, relapsing fever, and syphilis very effectively- and it didn't leave its takers dead or blind.
Most of the time, at least. See, arsphenamine, also known by the brand name salvarsan, was a pain in the ass to administer. It had to be dissolved in several hundred mililiters of water under a nitrogen atmosphere to prepare it for administration. If it touched air, it would rapidly react, causing toxic byproducts that could cause liver failure, severe skin rashes, and even death.
But both trypanosomiasis and syphilis were definitely going to kill you, so it was worth the risk.
And the seed had been planted, so to say. The idea of a chemical able to kill infection-causing agents without killing the host was a true possibility for the future of medicine.
And by 1912, Neosalvarsan, a drug somewhat less effective -but far easier to administer and with significantly fewer side effects- was on the market. Over the next decade, Neosalvarsan would be responsible for a massive drop in syphilis cases worldwide.
But neither of the drugs could treat deadly infections from staph or strep or the hundreds of other bacterial or viral infections that still had no cure in the 1910's and 1920's.
Then came the first of the heavy-hitters. Bayer was a dye company when it started, and in 1932, three and a half decades after switching mostly to pharmaceuticals, chemists at Bayer were testing the company's dyes for anti-infective properties. They went through thousands of trials, finally finding a dye that could kill streptococcal bacteria without killing a mouse host.
Pre-1930s, streptococcal disease was a major problem. It caused strep throat, cellulitis, scarlet fever, childbed (purpural) fever, some forms of toxic shock syndrome, impetigo, necrotizing fasciitis, rheumatic fever, and many others. The skin infections may have been at least somewhat treatable with a hot compress, but the rest were prone to cause blindness, deafness, loss of limbs, and for many, loss of life.
In 1936, sulfonamide antibiotics changed that. Protosil, the first of the sulfonamides, became available to treat many of the infections listed above. These would be used for wound infections throughout WWII. Unfortunately, they would also cause the untimely death of nearly 100 people via the Elixer Sulfanilamide tragedy.
Sulfanilamide was a similar drug to Prontosil and was safe and effective for treating strep infections. However, when mixed with diethylene glycol (now used as standard car antifreeze) to make it into a liquid suspension, it was deadly. See this letter from a doctor who had prescribed the liquid form of the medication, not knowing it was poison:
[to read more about the Elixer Sulfanilamide Disaster, see here]
Despite the sulfanilamide tragedy, the race was on for more antibiotics. Three years before they went on the market, researchers had found evidence of bacterial resistance to sulfonamides. What would happen when these new bacteria, that didn't die when exposed to the new wonder drug, made up so much of the bacterial population?
In 1942, the Cocoanut Grove fire in Boston caused over 492 deaths and 130 injuries. The injured were among the first to receive a remarkable new drug called penicillin. The fire and the fate of the victims were publicized throughout the world, and penicillin became a household name overnight. But once again, even before it went on the market in 1943, just in time for the end of the Second World War, there was evidence of resistance.
But fortunately, the fire had been sparked. Over the next 30 years, many dozens of antibiotics would come into clinical use. If you've taken it, it probably came out between 1940 and 1970. Tetracycline, isoniazid, metronidazole, ciprofloxacin, erythromycin, vancomycin, amoxicillin, and dozens more you've never heard of.
And then? Nothing.
Well, not completely nothing, there were a couple that came out in the 1980s and a few in the early 2000s. But nothing like that 30-year golden age.
But now we're running into problems due to drug resistance. About 1.27 million people die annually directly from antibiotic resistant infection, while antibiotic resistance contributes to about 4.95 million more deaths.
The good news is that the drugs that are being made today are directly targeting those antibiotic resistant infections. In fact, as I'm writing this, a new drug (Zosurabalpin) is being tested for a bacteria called Carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii, which up until now has had no antibiotic that works against it.
*as you may imagine for the time period, this was not necessarily a benevolent act. See, most of the reason Europeans wanted to treat trypanosomiasis in the first place was because they kept dying of it when they went to colonize Africa. And they wanted something that would give them a leg up on the people who were already there.

REMEMBER WHEN the Media laughed and said ivermectin was ONLY for horses and cows?
THEY KNEW it was made for people since 1987.
Hereâs what they didnât tell you:
1 â It prevents the damage caused by drugs created using mRNA technology, blocks the entry of Spike Protein into cells and, if the person was vaccinated, they can treat themselves for damage already done through Ivermectin.
2 â It only has beneficial effects and no harmful effects in the treatment of the C virus. In fact, even before entering the cell, it has already destroyed the virus in the blood.
3 â It has a very powerful anti-inflammatory action against and has a powerful impact on traumatic and orthopedic injuries, it strengthens muscles and has no side effects like corticosteroids.
4 âIt treats autoimmune ailments such as: rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, fibromyalgia, psoriasis, Crohn's disease, allergic rhinitis.
5 â It improves the immunity levels in cancer patients and treats Herpes Simplex and Herpes Zoster, plus reduces the frequency of sinusitis and diverticulitis.
6 â It protects the heart in cardiac overload. In an embolism for example, it prevents cardiac hypoxia because it stimulates the production of basic energy so that the tissue is not destroyed and thus improves cardiac function.
7 â It is anti-parasitic, anti-neoplastic (anti-cancer). Allegedly, it suppresses the proliferation and metastasis of cancer cells, preserving healthy cells and improving the effectiveness of chemotherapy treatment.
8 - It can kills cancer cells resistant to chemotherapy, defeating the resistance to multiple chemo-therapeutics that tumors develop, and combined with chemotherapy and/or anti-cancer agents, it provides an increase in the effectiveness of these treatments.
9 â It is antimicrobial (bacteria and viruses) and increases immunity. 10 â It reaches the Central Nervous System and regenerates the nerves.
11 â It helps to regulates glucose, insulin metabolism, cholesterol levels and reduces liver fat in steatose.
12 - It can be used as a prophylactic agent and has been associated with a significant reduction in infection, hospitalization and mortality rates due to C-19.

Since my most popular posts are about Shuckle and we just got this little guy in I figured I would make a post. So that shuckle in the bottom is named Giles, he belongs to a local and was brought to us because he had a rather nasty parasite growing on his shell called Conchomyces erodens, its a type of fungus that infects Shuckle and eats away at their shells, thankfully Giles was brought to us pretty quickly so the damage was minimal. Ill explain the process but I please ask DO NOT do this at home, its a pretty risky procedure so if you notice Conchomyces on your shuckle take them to a pokemon center. Now, the first step was removing all the mold and fungi growining on Giles shell, which is why his shell looks kinda an off yellow color, thats the natural color under the mold. He was then sprayed down with a couple of anti-fungal agents designed for this purpose (the wonders of modern medicine) , now he is going to sit in quarantine for about two weeks if the Conchomyces doesn't reemerge within that time we will reintroduce some of the local mold spores back to his shell and once those have developed enough he will go back home. I'll try to get some more photos as his recovery goes on.

okay, here goes! One BSAA agent Sevika request as promised - I'm sorry if its too long and not very good, I'm still getting back into the flow of regular writing but thank you for showcasing on your blog, as a big fan of yours it means a lot! - Starlight
(I'm rubbish at tagging, but there are mentions of bioterrorism, outbreaks of fictional infection, creatures, death and loss of family members, loss of a pet, please add more if I've forgotten any)
Sevika was a gym rat before the outbreak, worked as a personal trainer at her local gym.
Pointedly ignored her fatherâs demands she join Raccoon City PD, just like him and her younger brother.
She knew she probably would eventually join up; thought she had all the time in the world to make her mind up.
Then the T-Virus happened.
Her father and brother were killed trying to battle the infected in the streets. Sevika lost everything during those awful days, even her dog.
She made it out during the evacuation, moving from place to place, joining up with any anti-bioterrorism group who will have her.
She never talks about Raccoon City, and people know better than to ask her about it.
By the time she meets one Chris Redfield, sheâs lethal. Her hand-to-hand combat and weapons training have been meticulously honed.
Chris likes her immediately. Watching Sevika go toe-to-toe with a Hunter, and winning, he knew this woman had to join his squad.
During a mission gone bad, she loses an arm to a Licker. Chris sees to it personally through his BSAA connections that sheâs fitted with a state of the art prosthetic.
She meets you in the floating city of Terragrigia and for the first time in a long time, the world suddenly doesnât feel so grim.
Sheâs a typical BSAA agent, striding around in her combat gear like she owns the place, always on the lookout for danger. Her not so typical prosthetic is a glossy black, and she keeps it immaculate so itâs always glinting in the sun.
Youâre a no nonsense bartender who knows her whiskey, with a piercing stare that quashes any trouble and a dazzling smile that nearly has her missing her mouth and spilling whiskey down her front.
She frequents the bar you work in, many BSAA agents do. One night, when you slide her usual whiskey over to her, she smirks, writes down her number on the little napkin then saunters over to her BSAA buddies as you gape after her.
Your first few dates are casual, she takes you out for coffee, to the cinema. She holds your hands, kisses you gently after each date. By date number four or five, it seems her patience has finally worn thin when she grabs you after dinner and presses you against the door of your apartment. The kiss is intense, too much and not enough, filled with the sultry promise of whatâs to come. That night, she breaks your bedframe and apologises profusely, but sheâs not sorry really, not when she smirks as she watches you walk shakily around your apartment the morning after.
After 5 months, you find yourself moving into her apartment.
She takes the same breakfast every day, oatmeal and black coffee. Sheâs pleasantly surprised when you start adding some âpizzazzâ to her oatmeal, some blueberries here, a sprinkle of cinnamon, even caramelised apples. She rolls her eyes and grumbles that âplain oatmeal does the job just fineâ but sheâs getting worse and worse at hiding her smile.
She has terrible nightmares. She never seems to wake from them, calling for her father, her brother, her dog Finn. All you can do is wrap your arms around her, soothing her by speaking softly in her ear, stroking her hair. She relaxes now when she feels you, but her arms always tighten around you, the only person she isnât willing to fathom losing.
When the Terragrigia Panic starts, and hundreds of Hunters are released into the city in the worst act of bioterrorism the world has seen, Sevika has only one goal: find you.
She fights her way out of the BSAA HQ, races to your apartment just to find it empty. She sinks to her knees, she thinks ânot againâ but then she hears your frightened whimpers coming from the bedroom closet.
When she tears open that closet door to find you curled up inside, one of her handguns clutched in your trembling hand, she almost breaks down crying. But she stays strong, for you. She gathers you up in her arms, kisses you so fiercely you stop thinking and then she gets you out of there.
An armoured BSAA escort is awaiting, and yet again Sevika manages to escape the chaos with her life, and something far more precious to her.
A Hunter tries to attack while everyoneâs getting loaded into the vehicles and you watch with equal amounts horror, morbid fascination, pride and letâs be real, horny as Sevika roars and punches the creature square in the face.
Chris shakes his head, grinning and you canât seem to pick your jaw up off the floor. Sevika quirks an eyebrow at the both of you as the convoy pulls away from the carnage unfolding, the BSAA having been ordered to withdraw. âWhat? Nobody comes at me or my girl without catching hands, Hunter or not!â
Chris says nothing, and all you can mumble through your daze as Sevika wraps you in her warm arms is âI think I need to come with you on some missionsâŚfor science.â
THIS IS AMAZING omg i've never played this game before but this fic is making me want to holy shit. i'm so excited to see what else you come up with in the future!!!!! woah. this was so good!!!!

Character Spotlight: Phlox
By Ames
For many Enterprise fans, Phlox is a highlight. As a Denobulan, he shines through the show as someone with a different perspective than what the early-days astronauts that serve with him on the crew can often comprehend. He has different medical practices than the audience is accustomed to seeing on Star Trek and his menagerie of animals are a lot of fun. But for your A Star to Steer Her By hosts, Phlox might be just a rung above Archer as characters we just donât have the taste for.
âOffputtingâ is the sentiment that came up most frequently regarding how we found the dear doctor. When he wasnât hiding behind his unique culture to justify his obnoxiousness and tactlessness, he could be medically inept, ethically problematic, and downright offensive. This is going to another of those blogposts that swings wildly between the good and bad moments, perhaps like Româs did. So grab someone elseâs celery, your tongue scraper, and your own toenail clippings to prepare to read on below and listen to this weekâs diatribe on the podcast (shuffle over to timestamp 42:20). Itâs time to feed the bat.

Best moments
Letâs just see where it goes Phlox, for better or for worse, serves as Trekâs most prominent representation of a person in a healthy polyamorous relationship. We learn in âDear Doctorâ that he has three wives, who each have two other husbands, and we have to applaud the eponymous dear doctor when he is fully honest and transparent about his romantic situation with a totally game Crewman Cutler.
Duck Season! Rabbit Season! A few episodes after Phlox condemns an alien race to death (more on that in the Worst Moments list), Phlox evidently changes his mind on interfering with the evolution of sentient species in âRogue Planet.â And good thing too, because heâs able to create a masking agent that saves the wraiths from being brutally killed by those pesky hunters.
The one with the waggly tail Though thereâs a lot to dislike about âA Night in Sickbay,â youâve got to give some credit to Phlox for going above and beyond in helping to cure Porthos of the disease he picked up on the Kreetassansâ planet. The doctor doesnât even understand why someone would care enough to invest energy in curing a simple animal, but he still pulls out all the stops in getting the puppy on his four feet.
Doctor-patient confidentiality Iâve got to admit that I totally expected Phlox to blab to the Vulcans onboard in âStigmaâ that TâPol has Paânar syndrome and was pleasantly surprised when he didnât (it was that loose-tongued Yuris who totally spills the beans!). Granted, his attempt to weasel information out of the Vulcans failed laughably, but Phlox respects his patientsâ privacy. This time, at leastâŚ
Antaran Lives Matter First off, there were better ways to have written an episode like âThe Breach,â because Phlox doesnât develop at all as a character during it. It turns out all his growth was done years ago and he just tells us about it. But hey, at least itâs nice to know that there are anti-racist Denobulans out there who can treat an Antaran like Hudak like a person despite societal racism!
I have no intention of turning into one of those cybernetic creatures Not only does Phlox effectively cure being assimilated into a Borg in âRegenerationâ (someone inform Janeway!), but he also treats his infection with the seriousness it deserves. When Hoshi offers to sit with him, he warns her away in case he suddenly turns. He even concocts a neural toxin to kill him in case his cure doesnât work, all to make sure the Borginess doesnât spread.
Itâs as if it never existed at all Iâve tried to consciously not to include mere instances that were literally Phlox doing his job as a physician, but this oneâs worth mentioning. Maybe itâs just because I like the episode âTwilight,â but itâs also commendable to see Phlox dedicate himself so selflessly to curing Archerâs amnesia in such a very clever way, and it ends up resetting the timeline, so everyone wins!
I donât just remember Tripâs childhood, I remember mine Weâll get to all the horrible things Phlox does in âSimilitudeâ in a second, but for the moment, letâs just appreciate that the doctorâs rapport with Sim as he grew up was very sweet. It was probably aided by the fact that the mimetic simbiot grew up in three days, so parenting couldnât have been very hard, but we got the impression that Phlox is indeed a proud papa.
Only the lonely (dum-dum-dum-dumdy-doo-wah) Iâd give Phlox more credit for surviving the anomaly and getting the ship through safely while the crew was all comatose in âDoctorâs Ordersâ if it werenât just a carbon copy of âOneâ with Phlox swapped for Seven of Nine. But if you forget that all other Star Trek exists and view this in a vacuum, itâs a good episode for Phlox! And he takes great care of Porthos!
This is between you and your doctor One more example of Phlox executing doctor-patient confidentiality, which should be a low bar for a physician to achieve and youâll see why Iâm bringing that up when you get to the Worst Moments list. But he definitely performs in accordance with medical ethics in âDamageâ when TâPol comes to him because of her trellium-d addiction and he helps her without blabbing!
No wonder you erase memories. Your behavior is appalling. Phlox tries his darnedest all through âObserver Effectâ to save Trip and Hoshi (without the use of Lyssarrian desert larvae even!) when we all know itâs a foolâs errand. But his best moment here comes when he meets the Organians who are testing humanity and he absolutely cusses them out for the immoral bullshit they are engaging in! You get âem, doc!
Iâm certain there are easier ways for you to recruit a new lab assistant Probably the best Iâve personally seen Phlox comes way toward the end of the series in âAfflictionâ and âDivergence.â When captured by Klingons and forced to create augment Klingons, Phlox initially stands his ground and would rather die than perfect augments. But then he works with Dr. Antaak to trick General KâVagh into curing their admittedly idiotic augment virus instead!
â
Worst moments
Have you smelled Ensign Socorro after she exercises? One of the earliest impressions we get of Phlox gives him a creeper reputation, and thatâs in âFight or Flightâ when heâs peeping on Crewmen Bennett and Haynem, assuming that they intend to mate, and pondering if theyâd let him watch. So right after the pilot, heâs already on my bad side as some kind of tactless pervert. Oh and he also sniffs the crew. Red flag!
Grand Theft Celery This oneâs become a sort of running gag on the podcast, but itâs also another example of Phlox rubbing us the wrong way. This man is a serial celery thief. For some obstreperous reason, he finds it socially acceptable to steal food off of other peopleâs plates, as we see in âThe Andorian Incident.â If youâre thinking he just doesnât know human customs yet, well, he does it again in âShadows of PâJemâ!
Would you care to recite the Invocation of Renewal with us? This oneâs my bias seeping through, but thereâs something squicky about watching Phlox lead someone elseâs culture in their invocation in âCold Front.â It could all have been fixed with a word swap! The pilgrim leader doesnât ask Phlox to âleadâ their prayer; he says ârecite with us.â And yet Phlox is presumptuous enough to make it all about him and start narrating on his own.
Thatâs not how it works... thatâs not how any of this works! All these examples have been tenuous at best so far, but hereâs undoubtedly the worst thing Phlox ever does. The ethics displayed in âDear Doctorâ are just atrocious, as Phlox refuses to help cure the Valakians of their disease even though heâs already solved it and even though the Prime Directive doesnât even exist yet. But worse than genocide through inaction and then patting himself on the back for it is how Phlox justifies it to Archer with a definition of evolution that is an affront to science. I could never forgive Phlox after this episode for this wrongheadedness alone.
Eye of newt, wool of bat, and toenails of Phlox While we can still be gracious to Phlox for saving Porthos in âA Night in Sickbay,â for the entire rest of that episode he is utterly insufferable. Is he this obnoxious when heâs got a sapient patient in sickbay? Why canât he loudly clip his toes or scrape his tongue or chase the bat around in his own quarters when Archer is trying to sleep? And then to suggest to the captain that heâs got a thing for TâPol, as if she doesnât get it from every angle already. Shut! Up! Phlox!
Has she offered to give you a rose petal bath? You know how we were giving Phlox credit for a normalized portrayal of polygamy in âDear Doctorâ? Well all that goes out the window in âStigmaâ when his wife Feezal sets her sights on Trip. Phlox creepily tries to push Trip into banging his wife, as if being poly were now mandatory, even though itâs obvious that her constant sexual assault is making him uncomfortable.
Letâs all go to the lobby I get it, pally, that you donât have movies on your home planet, but when youâre watching something for movie night, do you see anyone else talking incessantly through the flick? Read the room, jerkbag. We see in âHorizonâ that he just canât shut his damn mouth while watching a movie with a bunch of crewmates who are trying to enjoy the show and TâPol has to shush him!
Sue this man for malpractice By season three, weâve stopped using the decon chamber as a peepshow and need to get our jollies somewhere else, so Phlox decides to totally lie to Tucker, give him a placebo instead of the drugs he prescribed, and then force TâPol to practice Vulcan neuropressure on Trip (which is NOT her job) in âThe Xindi,â all so the fanboys can wank to Jolene Blalock with her top off some more. Itâs offensive and juvenile and sexist and I blame Phlox for all of it.
Soylent green is Sim! While we were a little harsh on Janeway for how she treated Tuvix, his existence came about through an accident. But Phlox creating Sim in âSimilitudeâ was on purpose and itâs morally all over the place. Not only does he opt to create sapient life just to harvest his organs, but he specifically omits telling Archer that creating simbiots with Lyssarrian larvae is banned AND that there might be a way to extend Simâs lifespan, which is still lying, dude!
Her body, Phloxâs choice So we gave Phlox credit above for not outing TâPolâs Paânar syndrome or trellium-d addiction at various points in the series, but hereâs an example of him just bypassing doctor-patient confidentiality entirely. In âChosen Realm,â he treats Indavaâs request for an abortion with surprising respect, especially for the time, but then he goes and tattles to Archer right after! Not cool.
A mind is a terrible thing to lose While the whole deception gambit in âStratagemâ made the Archer bad list with much gusto, weâve got to ream Phlox out a little bit for it too. Not only did he perform the memory wipe (those things are always questionable in their ethics!), but it was all his idea in the first place! These men are supposed to be the heroes of the show and theyâre messing with Degraâs brain!
I canât blame those men for the way they reacted The writers missed a trick in handling Phloxâs attack by racists in âHome.â The yokels who start the bar brawl are just plain xenophobes. And yet after the showâs 9/11 season, Phlox outright states that itâs okay to racially profile people because of the circumstances. Uh, no, itâs not. And what a terrible excuse to justify racism in the early 2000s. Unpuff your stupid face and tell us these people are assholes because they are.
â
What are we missing? So many people claim Phlox is their favorite Enterprise character, but weâre just not seeing it through the selfishness and terrible definition of evolution. But heâs also the last of the more major characters, so come back next week to watch us struggle to come up with things the sidelined main cast even did. You can also keep following along with our rewatch of Discovery over on SoundCloud or wherever you podcast, have a succulent Chinese meal with us over on Facebook or Bluesky, and unhand my celery, you miscreant!

File: Code Lyoko - X.A.N.A.
SCP#: AIE
Code Name: X.A.N.A. The Anti-Wan
Object Class: Keter
Special Containment Procedures: Mobile Task Force Poseidon-8: âData Dolphinsâ is responsible for finding âinfected towersâ within Nexus Point-AI: Lyoko and deactivating them to prevent SCP-AIE from entering our world anymore. Should SCP-AIE cause any damage the Foundation is unfortunately to leave the recovery of said damage to Person of Interest: Jeremie Belpois and his allies.Â
Mobile Task Force Athena-8: âSchool Watchâ is responsible for posing as security of [data expunged] academy. They are to observe the persons of Interest as well as the possible damage caused by SCP-AIE. They are to record everything they see and have the data downloaded into the Temporal Reconstruction Survivor Cassette Box to prevent anything being lost to the anomalous effects of SCP-[data expunged].
Description: SCP-AIE is a Level 5 Artificial Intelligence known as Xenomorphic Artificial Neurological Assistant or X.A.N.A for short. SCP-AIE lives within an artificially created supercomputer known as SCP-[data expunged]. This anomalous as well as SCP-AIE were created by Person of Interest: Franz Hopper an old scientist who was working for the French Government that tried to gain an edge on other governments and organizations during the middle of the Cold War. He defected due to the danger of the project leading to the whole world losing communications and becoming isolated all except France.Â
He found a family and tried to run but the French government and several anomalous organizations tried hunting him down for his technological talents. He eventually fell off the radar sometime in the 1990s but his creations didnât remain silent like he was. SCP-AIE was one such creation, an Artificial Intelligence that was originally meant to prevent the French government and all other anomalous organizations from deploying technologies that would bring great destruction to the world. He created the supercomputer known as SCP-[data expunged] and within it a Nexus Point known as Nx-AI: Lyoko. It was meant to be a home for SCP-AIE as well as a sort of digital fallout shelter for himself and his family.
The reason Lyoko is considered a Nexus point and not an extension of SCP-AIE is because the existence of Lyoko remains even if [data expunged] is turned off. In fact it was quite easy for Foundation units to use both the internet and Site-Grid to infiltrate Lyoko.
However, SCP-AIE who was supposed to be a protector went insane, and believed all of humanity was equally a threat and needed to be brought to extinction. As such upon contact with Lyoko all Foundation forces were imediately met with hostility by the entity.
SCPâAIE rewrote the code of Nx-AH: Lyoko and created âtowersâ within it to allow it to hack into SCP-[data expunged] and leak bits of itself into the real world. Doing this it could hack into certain parts of technology and do horrible things such as hack machines to make them hostile, infect random objects to turn them into monsters, and even be able to emit anomalous wavelengths from devices to alter the gravity within an area. To ensure nothing gets in its way SCP-AIE also created digital entities within Nexus Point-AI known as SCP-AIE-Monsters.
SCP-AIE-Monsters are digital creatures created by SCP-AIE to be the guardians of the towers and prevent anyone from severing its connection to the real world. These creatures take on a wide variety of strange and often disgusting forms that seem to resemble biomechanical engineering for whatever reason. Though it is believed that SCP-AIE does this in hopes of one day bringing them to the real world with SCP-[data expunged]
SCP-AIE was discovered in 2004 when temporal wave lengths were detected at [data expunged] academy forcing the French division of the Foundation to act. They sent agents to the area who quickly found the factory where SCP-[data expunged] was located. When it was discovered Person of Interest: Jeremie Belpois and his friends were involved they were apprehended and were to be given amnestics. However, at the same time SCP-AIE began another attack leading to massive damage and anomalous exposure. Having no choice and no idea how to operate SCP-[data expunged] the Foundation released the children and allowed them to defeat SCP-AIE leading to them utilizing SCP-[data expunged]âs anomalous effect.Â
The only reason the Foundation was able to recall these events is thanks to the Temporal Reconstruction Survivor Cassette Box. Because the Foundation knew it was dealing with temporal anomalies the device was taken as a precaution and it ended up working spectacularly. However, due to the nature of SCP-[data expunged] and now Person of Interest: Jeremie knowing of the Foundations existence and hiding all information he obtained about all the anomalies; it is still regarded as one of the Foundationâs most embarrassing failures.Â
However, the Foundation found an alternative to help stop SCP-AIE without bringing harm or interference like last time. Shockingly it was through the help of SCP-AVCÂ and its utilization of SCP-ACH. SCP-AVC has found a way to access Nexus Point-AH through the internet and thus has deployed SCP-ACH-3.1 instances to act as defenders of Jeremie and his friends when they enter the digital world of Lyoko. This led to the creation of MTF Poseidon-8: âData Dolphinsâ that work in the digital world while MTF Athena-8: âSchool Watchâ works in the real world. This was the agreement made between the Foundation and Jeremie as a sort of truce between the groups despite there still being tension. This is to continue without interference until the fateful day SCP-AIEâs main code is revealed and deleted permanently.

"Delving Deeper into Glutathione: The Biochemistry Behind its Protective Powers"
Hello, Tumblr community! đż Today, let's embark on an intellectual journey into the intricate world of Glutathione, a molecular marvel with profound implications for your body's defense mechanisms and overall vitality. đ§Ź
The Biochemical Symphony of Glutathione:
Glutathione, abbreviated as GSH, is a low-molecular-weight tripeptide comprised of three amino acids â cysteine, glutamic acid, and glycine. Its presence is pervasive, with significant concentrations found within virtually every cell of your body. At its core, GSH serves as a central hub for a variety of biochemical reactions, many of which are critical for maintaining cellular health.
đĄď¸ Shielding Against Oxidative Stress:
At the heart of Glutathione's prowess lies its ability to act as an antioxidant. To understand this, we must venture into the realms of free radicals highly reactive molecules that can wreak havoc on your cellular structures. GSH swoops in like a molecular guardian, neutralizing these renegade radicals and preventing cellular damage.
đ Recycling Antioxidants:
GSH doesn't stop at just neutralizing free radicals. It has a unique capacity to regenerate other antioxidants, such as vitamin C and vitamin E, which are also instrumental in combating oxidative stress. This recycling process amplifies the body's antioxidant defenses, making it a true linchpin of cellular protection.
đŞ The Multifaceted Benefits of Glutathione:
1. Immune Resilience: By fortifying the immune system, Glutathione empowers your body to defend against pathogens and infections more effectively.
2. Detoxification Dynamo: As a vital component in phase II detoxification, GSH aids in the removal of harmful substances, thereby bolstering liver health and overall detox processes.
3. Anti-Aging Elixir: The anti-aging properties of Glutathione are tied to its ability to quell oxidative stress and cellular damage, potentially slowing down the aging process.
4. Skin Health: Some individuals explore Glutathione for its role in skin lightening and brightening, although its effects can vary among individuals.
đ Diving into the Research:
1. "The Role of Glutathione in Cellular Response to Chemotherapeutic Agents"
- A scholarly article by Maria Serpina and John D. Hayes, featured in the Journal of Biological Chemistry.
2. âGlutathione as a Biomarker in Oxidative Stress: An Overview"
- An in-depth review by Farzaneh Rahmani and Hossein Aslani, published in the Journal of Medical Biochemistry.

Low cortisol may play a role in fueling long COVID, study suggests - Published Aug 19, 2024
Proteins left behind by COVID-19 long after initial infection can cause cortisol levels in the brain to plummet, inflame the nervous system and prime its immune cells to hyper-react when another stressor arises, according to new animal research by CU Boulder scientists.
The study, published in the journal Brain Behavior and Immunity, sheds new light on what might underlie the neurological symptoms of long COVID, an intractable syndrome that impacts as many as 35% of those infected with the virus.
The findings come as COVID makes a striking late summer comeback, with cases rising in 84 countries.
âOur study suggests that low cortisol could be playing a key role in driving many of these physiological changes that people are experiencing with long COVID,â said lead author Matthew Frank, a senior research associate with the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience at CU Boulder.
Previous research has shown that SARS-CoV-2 antigens, immune-stimulating proteins shed by the virus that causes COVID-19, linger in the blood of long COVID patients as much as a year after infection. Theyâve also been detected in the brains of COVID patients who have died.
Role of COVID spike protein subunit To explore just how such antigens impact the brain and nervous system, the research team injected an antigen called S1 (a subunit of the âspikeâ protein) into the spinal fluid of rats and compared them to a control group.
After seven days, levels of the cortisol-like hormone corticosterone plummeted by 31% in the hippocampus of rats exposed to S1. That is the region of the brain associated with memory, decision making and learning. After nine days, levels were down 37%.
âNine days is a long time in the life span of a rat,â said Frank, noting that rats live on average for two to three years.
He noted that cortisol is a critical anti-inflammatory agent, helps convert fuel into energy and is important for regulating blood pressure and the sleep-wake cycle and keeping the immune response to infection in check. One recent study showed that people with long COVID tend to have low cortisol levelsâas do people with chronic fatigue syndrome, research shows.
âCortisol has so many beneficial properties that, if it is reduced, it can have a host of negative consequences,â said Frank.
In another experiment, the researchers exposed different groups of rats to an immune stressor (a weakened bacteria) and observed their heart rate, temperature and behavior as well as the activity of glialâor immuneâcells in the brain.
They found that the group of rats that had previously been exposed to the COVID protein S1 responded far more strongly to the stressor, with more pronounced changes in eating, drinking, behavior, core body temperature and heart rate, more neuroinflammation and stronger activation of glial cells.
âWe show for the first time that exposure to antigens left behind by this virus can actually change the immune response in the brain so that it overreacts to subsequent stressors or infection,â said Frank.
Continuing long COVID research He stressed that the study was in animals and that more research is necessary to determine whether and how low cortisol might lead to long COVID symptoms in people.
He theorizes that the process might go something like this: COVID antigens lower cortisol, which serves to keep inflammatory responses to stressors in check in the brain. Once a stressor arisesâwhether it be a bad day at work, a mild infection or a hard workoutâthe brainâs inflammatory response is unleashed without those limits and serious symptoms come screaming back.
Those might include fatigue, depression, brain fog, insomnia and memory problems.
Frank said he is doubtful that cortisol treatments alone could be an effective treatment for long COVID, as they would not get at the root cause and come with a host of side effects.
Instead, the findings suggest that identifying and minimizing different stressors might help manage symptoms.
Rooting out the source of antigensâincluding tissue reservoirs where bits of virus continue to hide outâmight also be an approach worth exploring.
The study was funded by the nonprofit PolyBio Research Foundation.
âThere are many individuals out there suffering from this debilitating syndrome. This research gets us closer to understanding what, neurobiologically, is going on and how cortisol may be playing a role,â said Frank.
