I've gone and dug myself into an angry mood.

I clicked on a YouTube video from a channel called "Nerdy Novelist," titled Why the argument "AI is Stealing" is irrelevant.

I watched it through, hoping he'd eventually get to a better argument against AI (Curious to see if he'd have the same different arguments that I've thought up).

But nope.

His only argument was that tech companies are writing better programs, so they can create "synthetic" training data sets, so they don't have to scrape copyrighted material for their large language models. And someday, book publishers will put compensation clauses into their contracts with writers. And if the computer in your mom's basement is powerful enough, no one will be able to sue you for copyright infringement.

As an example, he said he'd soon be able to user generative AI to write an entire novel in the style of Brandon Sanderson without his permission, 'cause you can't copyright a style (and no one can pinpoint Sanderson's style anyway).

And that was the whole video.

And the comment section was filled with tech-bros talking about how the people who are against AI (especially writers* who are against AI) are fools who are just purists and elitists.

I almost replied with a rant of my own about how "Legal" is not the same as "Ethical," but decided to type all this out here, instead.

*Specifically the writers from NaNoWriMo who are complaining.

We really need to take a stand against AI. It is not okay. To steal others work just to make your own has never been okay. Artists, musicians, writers etc everyone is going to be affected and hurt by it. There are more negatives than there are positives. I have seen so many use AI in selfish ways; feeding something that is so harmful. It is very disappointing to see. I am unsure of how we can come together on this, but please fight against AI. Do not use apps trying to implement AI. Leave reviews talking about how deplorable AI is. Please speak out and let it be known how harmful AI is. We are stronger together. If anyone has alternative apps/ websites to recommend that do not use AI, it would be greatly appreciated.

The thing is, I wish I could use AI art ethically.

Like - don’t lynch me yet - there are things that I want art for (that doesn’t exist) that I want badly enough to pay for. I have commissioned art for that, and I will in the future. 

But there’s also stuff I’d love to see visually that is more... a passing fancy, or just not worth the amount of money it would cost to pay an artist what they’re worth to get it made. A ‘hey, what would this look like’ or ‘I’ve got to get a visual for a major NPC for tonight’s Pathfinder Game’, etc. (Though usually I’d be needing multiple visuals per session since I tend to introduce a lot of NPCs). But they’re not things where the need is enough that I would spend money on it (nor would I have the time required, in some cases). It’s not for a project that makes money, after all.

I can of course hunt through google images, but between mislabeled images, poor search parameters (because my google-fu is weak) and increasing amounts of AI art flooding the net, that’s easier said than done sometimes. I’ve spent hours sometimes looking for just the right image for a character (which is one of the reasons I’ve started saving what I like @kylia-likes-character-art and tagging it with various things to make it easier to search through. Gotta add in a bunch of backlog too.) 

And I recently saw a thread on a forum where an artist with some serious disabilities talked about how certain AI art tools help them create art easier by helping them wrt their disability. And I’d be all for that. Creators using AI as an aid - I don’t actually object to that, when it’s done ethically. (If it can be)

But the problem, of course, is that AI art generators are trained on art they didn’t have permission to use, in the majority of cases (to say the least), and even sometimes when they had ‘permission’, they really didn’t thanks to poor wording and pre-toggled options on websites. Etc. And I’m not in favor of stealing art. 

Plus, using AI art is implicitly endorsing everything else that comes from it - and that’s where capitalism comes in. See, I don’t actually hate capitalism per se. I don’t want to completely abolish it. But in it’s current state, Capitalism is pretty shit, and corporations already are using AI art for all sorts of things, taking jobs away from graphic designers, and cheapening the overall aesthetic value of our world. Because AI art is generally only ever ‘good enough’. But ‘good enough’ is cheaper when it comes from AI. 

So we see book covers done with AI art, we see advertising campaigns done with AI generated imagery, in some cases. More and more, we’re seeing AI generation happening for things that should really involve paying someone money to create. 

And that? That’s not okay. That’s really not okay.

This is a cry for help

Alright so I want to be able to protect my art from A.I, but the only A.I poisons I am currently aware of is Glaze and Nightshade, and unfortunately from what I can gather so far they aren't available for Android phones, which sucks because I only use my phone for art (My PC is absolute shit so I can't do art on it-). :/

Are there any A.I poisons for mobile-?

Yeah it is really scary how people can't comprehend how their shit can like, and up in tumblr search tags if they're not careful of the "freaks" and just go off on people for interacting with their post in a show tag and call them "insane" and then expecting the wheelchair user they've just insulted to pay them being ablest towards them, but instead I reply with a small teaching on how to use the website and block them... So Boo.
