2, 7, 18 for kabru plz š„ŗ
i will apologize in advance i got like 5 of the most inconsistent hours of sleep so i dont know if i even make sense. More than i usually dont know LOL
2: favorite canon thing about this character
tldr: his trauma complexes and the way that drives his character
obligatory "autism" answer to be honest. no but in all seriousness kui is really really good at portraying people in accordance to their trauma/background and kabru is no different... being intimately familiar (married) to someone with ptsd, it makes kabru hit home in a lot of ways. i LOVE that he comes off as creepy to those that are close to him! i love his dissociative symptoms and his panicking. ive been doing (loose spare time) research on the correlations/potential causations of personality disorders and other trauma complexes (dissociative identity, ptsd, sometimes ocd, etc etc etc) that can arise specifically from the way people who are neurodivergent from birth are treated by others. i love the clear line from utaya (caused kabrus ptsd), his adoption (perfect circumstance for a knowledge seeker), his special interest, and his cluster b tendencies ("i have to mask, lie, or otherwise be dishonest to meet my physical/psychological needs. i have to yell to be heard by myself and others."). i think you can see from the way he reacts to going to milsirils family reunion that his interest in people isnt solely due to trauma-- that gathering has nothing to do with taking down dungeons. but it takes that path because the hole caused by kabrus trauma is a need that milsiril cant fulfill. so he has to do it himself. it is uniquely traumatizing to suffer from survivors guilt, specifically. HES JUST SO COOL!!!! <3 <3
of course im not saying like. Kabru Specifically Being Diagnosed With PTSD Is Canon because the term ptsd is a collection of traits that weve lumped together with one term that typically responds to the same set of treatment, but trauma is universal and ptsd is excellent shorthand for kabrus trauma responses!
7: something the fandom does with this character that you like
i love when he isnt portrayed as Knowing Everything. i love when hes portrayed like a little bit of a dumbass sometimes. i also really love the way a lot of people portray his dynamic with laios, especially when its kabru getting to experience his emotions in a relatively stable environment and laios is there to support him. ALSO i love that Kabru Marcille Friendship seems to be agreed upon
18: relationship they have in canon with another character that you admire
... i Mean. i dont mean to be TOO obvious but his relationship with laios... ouuughhhhhhh!!!!!!!!! FUN FACT! exposure therapy is actually like. HIGHLY effective for people with obsessive-compulsions, phobias, or other aversions!! this is not due to the simple fact of being exposed to it, however. kabru retraumatizes himself this way-- he risks his life for the uncontrolled exposure to the familiarity of his trauma. a big motivator for him is his survivors guilt. this isnt exposure therapy, its just exposure.
what makes exposure therapy effective is understanding. its understanding you wont get every disease if you dont wash your hands when youre compelled to, understanding not all spiders are dangerous and that we have an evolutionary fear response.
kabru is bad at recognizing his needs. he chases the need to understand monsters by resolving to adventure dungeons. he makes this decision as a kid. its like he knows he needs to understand monsters on some level, but no one else sees monsters as complex beings, no one gives the time of day to understanding them. so instead he interprets this motivation solely as a desire to end monsters and dungeons. upon his observation of laios though, seeing someone who doesnt act like everyone else, who is a really good leader regarding progress in the dungeon, its like he subconsciously chases his need to understand, while consciously seeing laios as concerning.
all this to say, i admire so much that laios can provide kabru a safe, human place to understand monsters, when hes ready. laios can expose him to the monstrous while preventing reckless, unprepared exposure. this story is so damn cool through my psychology special interest goggles lol...
honorary mentions: his relationship with rin. i admire rin, because dear fuck how do you make it through what she did and still speak at all let alone leave your room?? and their relationship i admire not because its crazy healthy or good for either of them but because it is a testament to their strength as people. i dont remember rn if any of their interactions as kids are shown but i presume kabru was just insanely kind and patient. you have to be to befriend someone so traumatized. their relationship kills me, because they clearly have a deep respect for each other, but rin probably has more emotional problems than kabru does regarding forging relationships. gwohhhh...
lastly, i like his minor relationship with toshiro lol its interesting how they seem to gravitate to each other if theyre both in a scene! and i really enjoy when kabru brutally talks sense into toshiro regarding falins revival. obviously, they dont have much interaction to go off of, but i like to think the combo of kabru being able to empathize so strongly with toshiro AND be honest about the situation at the same time are probably pretty refreshing for him, where he typically either gets minimal empathy and intense honesty from laios, or intense cognitive empathy-driven assumptions about what he wants or needs or how to interact with him. having someone who is genuinely adept at the mask and cognitive empathy out of his own choice, rather than social pressure, but also isnt scared to say it like it is... well itd do toshiro some good if they stay friends post canon imo!
#i like seeing this kind of stuff in maintags so ill put it there for anyone else i slurmpose#(suppose)#kabru of utaya#laios touden#rinsha fana#toshiro nakamoto#dungeon meshi#and me personal ones#laios#kabru#rin#shuro

We are literally not watching the same show istfg.
The man is a PIRATE. To say he would never CHOOSE violence is just. Blatantly incorrect. He reminisced fondly about gouging out somebodyās eye. Fang is SCARED of him. āWhen people see the flag they just surrender, I donāt even have to be on the boatā is a complaint about nobody putting up a fight anymore. He WANTS a fight. Iām.
Can we please, PLEASE, rewatch the show without the rose-tinted glasses? Can we fucking acknowledge that there is a baseline of violence that is treated less seriously because this is a rom-com about pirates and its not always an indicator of who is a ābad evil personā who must be condemned for committing said acts of violence? Ed can enjoy being violent and still not be okay with having killed his abusive father. The trauma there comes from the abuse and the fact that the murder was retaliation against said abuse. Killing your abuser is traumatizing. Hell, he can have trauma around murder and still be okay with violence because violence doesnāt inherently lead to/imply murder.
āEd doesnāt like/want to be violent and Stede is his hero saving him from the violent oppressive life of piracyā is SUCH a flat fucking take. Its infantilizing, and frankly? Its boring. Its a boring read on such an interesting character with such an interesting relationship with violence.
#the dork is being a dork#not tagging ed#like#shit like this is legit making me consider unfollowing amuseoffyre because people with shit takes like this love their meta#and like i don't always agree with their meta but its not ever the repugnant shit the izzy haters spew#its a different perspective and i can respect that#but this shit?#this isn't a different perspective this is a misread that is being presented as fact and it colors a lot of people's interpretations of the#canon in ways that take all the onus off of ED to make himself a better person and puts it all onto other people 'forcing' him into a#lifestyle that he CHOSE and - at one point - ENJOYED#i would not be surprised if this person blamed izzy for all of ed's faults#nor would i be surprised seeing the abysmal 'izzy is abusing ed' take from them either#can we please get a little media comprehension? some actual analysis of what we see AND hear from ALL parties?#i know its a big ask but fucking christ#if we can't engage with the ACTUAL media can we at least shut up when it comes to making meta posts?

I'm seeing a lot of "ugh, so we can't even criticize fic authors anymore?" posts popping up on here and the ao3 subreddit and I just want to say, for the record: No one's saying you can't criticize (fanfic) authors publicly. They're saying it's rude and antithetical to positive fandom experience. And, yes there's a difference.
If this website was a conference and I had just spent a whole afternoon listening to a presentation on [unpopular fic trope] and after that was done, I got up on stage and very publicly told the audience that [unpopular fic trope] was illogical and anyone who writes it is woefully misinformed and should be banned from writing [relevant character], that would in fact be a dick move.
"But the canon character would never--" it doesn't matter. You're shouting down the hall at the person who just happily did a whole seminar on their OOC version of that character. "But I don't like that the author chose to make them--" good, you're well-acquainted with your likes and dislikes, time to find another fic.
We all run into fics and interpretations we don't like. But there's a huge difference between loudly talking about it on Tumblr where the author can see it, and just venting in a private discord or other group. Also, gentle reminder that this is a hobby for most writers and something they do purely because they enjoy it. Stop being massive dicks just because you feel entitled to a certain flavor of fanfiction you will probably be chasing until the Reformation of Krypton.

Exactly. If you ask someone about the commonality of something in a language they speak, and it's not something they've tracked or something where they've already heard the answer, they can't reliably give the right answer, but they'll probably have a gut feeling about some answers being more plausible than others. And all feelings are rooted in subconscious statistical analysis, regardless of the quality of the statistics and analysis.
Now, how do statistics factor into learning facts from a Wikipedia article? For one thing, if you're forming a strong belief that a thing is true because you read it on Wikipedia, you form that belief because you trust Wikipedia to provide reliable information on that topic. What does it mean to trust something? Trusting a source to provide reliable information is rooted in predicting that information it reports is highly likely to be true. Our brains form those predictions through statistical analysis, and they express those predictions through the feeling that a given source is (or is not) trustworthy.
Those predictions are, of course, not always correct. We can get bad data, by getting incorrect information on whether or not something a source reported was in fact true, or we can do bad analysis on the data we do have. If someone sees five claims from a source, and ultimately learns five of those claims to be true and five of them to be false, but they spend five hours thinking about the true claims and only five minutes thinking about the false claims, they could end up giving their brain 60 times as many thoughts associated with the true claims as with the false claims, and end up with the feeling that the source is significantly more likely to provide true claims than false ones despite that not being the case. But as flawed as it is, that is statistical analysis.
Brain-time ties nicely into another point where statistical analysis plays into learning a fact from a Wikipedia article: the act of reading. When we look at a set of words in front of us, what we're doing is taking in visual input data and assessing that the shapes we're looking at are likely to correspond to the words we interpret them. Sometimes, those words are very familiar shapes that we can assess with extremely high confidence. But we can also guess with less confidence about the words represented by unfamiliar fonts, handwriting, or spelling.
Now, when we look at that sentence...
Herbert S. Zim, in his classic introductory cryptography text Codes and Secret Writing, gives the English letter frequency sequence as "ETAON RISHD LFCMU GYPWB VKJXZQ"... different ways of counting can produce somewhat different orders.
...we don't give our brain just one data point represented. The human eye sees about 75 frames per second, so if you look at the sentence for one second, you're getting about 75 frames worth of visual data on it. Is that enough to memorize all the relevant information? Probably not. But the more you look at it, the more memory data you get. You can train your brain to predict that a thought of "the most common letters" will be followed by E, then T, then A, then O, then N, for however many you focus on teaching yourself. Personally I found it easier for the sections that look more like words, sequences where my brain attaches greater likelihood to subsequent letters following ones before it. ETAON? Sure. RISHD? Tougher, but manageable. LFCMU? What the hell is that?
It's all statistical analysis, so many layers of it. It's not always good statistical analysis, but bad statistical analysis is still statistical analysis.
I read a post about AI about how "oh it's just doing statistics on patterns so it's not really intelligent, look at this type of error it makes" and I thought it would be rude to reblog directly so I'm making my own post:
AI makes mistakes in the ways humans do. The way humans, like, create abstract thoughts, and weird bias and prejudice get into those thoughts, and this is why AI training needs to be very careful to not replicate human bias and frequently stumbles in this pursuit.
Like, yes it doesn't do everything humans do but it does some of the things, and isn't that wild? That we can create a machine that can create abstractions like humans can? That's incredible to me, like we have figured out how to make abstraction machines, and what is thinking if not abstracting!
This kind of error, of assuming that "object A must belong in category X because it is seen in the same kinds of contexts that I have learned things in category X belong in" is a very human mistake! AI falls for optical illusions, it often makes mistakes similar to the ones freshmen get wrong in exams, it is able to capture vibes and that's unsettling and weird and wonderful!
We have a machine that can probe a form of human pattern recognition that we've never been able to see before! And humans are masters of pattern recognition, it's our greatest quality. And we're being crept on by computers in this one aspect, like we were in so many others at different points in history.

Relistening to Checking Out, and Iāve always liked this scene in particular, as it is one thatās very open to interpretation.
I believe, from what Iāve seen personally at least, one or the most common interpretations is that Helenās observation is either incorrect, or intentionally misleading, and that Jonās response actually stems from touch aversion, or a degree of it, attributed to his trauma, particularly moments where heās been left helpless and at the whims of others. E.g. Kidnapped by the Circus, almost killed by Daisy etc. And while I think this interpretation is both interesting and plausible, I donāt think Iāve seen much for the opposite interpretation, which is that Helenās observation is correct.
It can be difficult to talk about Jonās humanity sometimes, as thereās a lot of nuance and layers to cover. The fact is, Jon, especially in season five, does not completely think like a human. He is simultaneously a painfully human character such with deep compassion and guilt and self-loathing, while also being a being of immense knowledge who sees and understands the world in a different light, and in a way no one else can possibly comprehend, which has to be very isolating all things considered.
As with everything in TMA, Jon makes a choice, and his choice is to end the apocalypse, to stay with Martin, and to stay as human as he possibly can. We know from Annabelle that had she have taken Martin, who is presumably acting as one of his main anchors to humanity, Jon potentially would have snapped completely, the final push over the edge as she puts it. It has to be a difficult thing for him, to try and balance his existence when he is so fundamentally changed, and when this world naturally feels right to him, and you could argue that him snapping at the mother here is simply his instinct, being what he is.
He is The Archivist, the meant-to-be Pupil of the Eye, one of the most important beings present, and so it makes sense thereās almost an instinctive detachment from the victims. He is meant to Watch them, and Watching means no physical interaction. By touching him, the mother has broken this barrier, and so, instinctually, he reacts ā with anger, notably.
Iād say itās meant to contrast how we see him acting prior to the touch, where he seems genuinely sympathetic with the mother, and he is trying to help in what little way he can. Because before she touches him, that gap between Watched and Watcher is still firm in place, and so he can handle that.
Bearing in mind, I havenāt re-listened to the rest of season five with this, so I may have missed something.
I also think both interpretations can co-exist too, and that could be just as interesting to explore. Either way, I find that, with Jon, itās important to consider his status in the Eyepocalypse and his nature vs his choices, although, his nature vs his choices goes for the whole series I think, as choice is such a consistent theme in TMA and in the Avatars.

Everything we know about Project Apple (and, by extension, Anya's past) thus far
thought i'd compile all of that now while endo's on break Just In Case the next chapter happens to start anya's backstory (i don't Think it will but endo likes surprising us LSDFKLFS)
important disclaimer that project apple and the organization in charge of anya's experiments have not been confirmed to be related! there's evidence that they have things in common, in particular employees, but that's our only real connection between the two thus far. still! worth looking into
more under the cut!
so, starting very strongly with the very first mention of anything related to the project: anya's introduction in chapter 1
despite her being a main character, we know very little about her past at the moment, and this little blurb at the beginning makes up a very big portion of what we know.
things to note here:
as an experiment, her name was "Test Subject 007". important to note that the notation differs between her and bond: she was Test Subject 007, bond was Subject 8, no zeroes in there;
she had been made thus by accident, the phrasing itself implying quite heavily that she was just a normal child before said accident (but this is the translation! i don't know japanese so i can't cross-reference with the raws to clarify if the phrasing changes anything, but the fanbook uses the word "gained" to describe her powers too);
because her mind-reading is an unintended consequence, that means the scientists were presumably not, at least initially, trying to achieve cognitive enhancements in humans, and were instead trying to achieve something else, whatever that might've been;
she escaped from the facility and then moved from institution to institution, looking for a family.
so, crucially, through this little introduction we learn that there is an organization, government-funded or otherwise, that is or was conducting human experiments for unknown purposes. we also learn that whatever family anya had prior to being involved in the experiments is more than likely unreachable, at least as far as she knows, and so she has settled for finding a new family to take care of her instead.
in terms of the facility itself, here we see they clearly drilled it into her that she can't ever reveal her secret (and the darn plush is there too -- in the anime it's even more emphasized, as you can see in the gif i made)
through her reminiscing though, we get our very first look at the scientists that were in charge of her! they're in the gif above but here they are in the manga too. it's so interesting that the anime actually shows their eyes behind the glasses though, fascinating choice.
the insistence on world peace is important, as it explains her own personal obsession with it and shows that it's not just because of twilight's own focus on preserving the peace. i also don't think twilight ever really talks about "world peace," only about "preserving the current peace between westalis and ostania" -- anya seems to be the only one talking about WORLD peace (even in the very first scene where either of them mention it in proximity to each other in ch 1, loid says "understanding the other party is the first step towards peace" and anya's interpretation is "understanding me makes world peace?") but take this with a grain of salt because i might be wrong! going through every single mention of peace in the story just to fact check this one little trivia fact is a bit much i think so i'm not doing it JSDFKLSD
but yes
remember mr hair strand and baldy, we'll see them again. not her though, ig she wasn't in charge of bond
now, fast-forwarding to chapter 19, we finally get a name and a premise for the experiments:
"but oana," you might say, "this is talking about animals only! how do we know it's the same project as anya's, which involved human experimentation?"
i don't think it is, is the thing! i think it's related to the experiments anya was a part of, which is evidenced by the same scientists being featured in project apple too, but there's more going on that we don't know about. there wouldn't be such adamancy on keeping the two separate in every official mention of them if they were just the same thing, imo!
back to the evidence, we learn that the project, conducted and funded by the previous ostanian regime (meaning donovan's related to it one way or another, since he was prime minister), was marked by franticness and desperation -- a prime place for accidents like anya's telepathy and bond's future vision.
we also learn that the project was sacked by the new administration and that the former test subjects ended up on the black market.
(this makes it very important, imo, to learn when anya escaped the facility vs. when the project was sacked. it's clearly no longer in function, but while we've heard nothing from them thus far, i'm willing to bet the shady dealings around the desmond group are NOT related to the war, as W.I.S.E. has been led to believe, but rather to reignite project apple. that is speculation however so i'm going to refrain from theorising much on why the desmond group is focused on acquiring pharmaceutical companies!!)
ok speculation tangent over, back on track
so, that's already a decent amount of info! but moving to chapter 22, when bond is finally home, and we finally see some familiar faces
behold! baldy and mr hair strand!
and 2 other guys we don't know but will see again in another bond flashback!
that's 2 out of the 3 scientists we've seen thus far from anya's own time as subject 007, confirming that there IS a connection between anya and bond's experiments, regardless of whatever the project anya was a part of might've been named.
this is also the chapter in which we learn that bond himself was subject 8 (or, if we take it from the fanbook, subject #8. still, diff notation from anya!)
in chapter 31, we learn an interesting tiny piece of trivia. we don't get any further info on it, but it IS mentioned as something that is known by W.I.S.E.:
ostania is rumoured to have done human experimentation! and W.I.S.E., and by extension loid, are aware of that.
do i know how them knowing may be important later? not really!
the next droplet of info we get is in chapter 40. we see that project apple had collaborators that are still functioning unhindered.
of course, born industries is only rumoured to have been involved with project apple, but regardless of whether or not they actually were, the rumour itself implies that the project likely pulled scientists from various other companies' R&D departments.
(this makes the desmond group's acquisition of glooman pharmaceuticals shadier, but anyway)
as a side note, twilight is emoting so much at just his wrong assumption that bond is seeking revenge against the scientists. imagine how he's going to react when he finds out about anya JKSDFKLFSD
and now aaaaall the way in chapter 58, we see the bald guy who anya also knows, the two scientists from bond's previous flashback, and one whole new guy!
and thus ends our current knowledge of it all!
the only other thing worth discussing is anya's knowledge of classical language
but plenty people have already discussed these scenes, especially recently, so here are some links: 1 | 2 | 3
the only thing i can add is that i'm fairly certain that classical language is a lot more likely to be latin than old english, because it's a very common language to learn in school (in europe at least, and ostania is based on east germany so it makes sense to me. i learned mandatory latin in school for a few good years too, even if i wasn't that good at it lol) and because one of the most common modern usages of latin are in medicine and science, it would make sense that she'd be better at it due to exposure.
a possibility is also that the scientists would think in latin to conceal their thoughts from her, and that's how she ended up learning so much. she's not fluent in latin, she's just well acquainted and that cicumstance would explain the how.
BUT THAT'S SPECULATIONNN
also i don't think "ANIA" is an acronym, nor do i think anya's been misspelling her own name out of lack of knowledge. "ania" is a polish diminutive of anna and an alternate transcription of ŠŠ½Ń, so i think it's far more likely that anya isn't ostanian or westalian than it is that her name comes from an acronym.
now,
TL;DR!
what we know about project apple (and the "mysterious organization"):
project apple was funded and conducted by what appears to have been donovan's regime and, from what W.I.S.E. knows, aimed to create highly intelligent animals for military purposes;
W.I.S.E. is aware that ostania is at the very least rumoured to have dabbled in human experimentation;
the project is presumably no longer on-going, though it is likely there are efforts behind the scenes to revive it;
it is rumoured but not confirmed that project apple had collaborating companies that are still functioning perfectly fine;
the same scientists who were in charge of bond were also in charge of anya, signalling that there is a very significant connection between project apple and the "mysterious organization;"
based on what they were telling anya, they were/are very focused on "world peace";
their experimentation methods include but likely aren't limited to electrocution.
and what we (vaguely) know about anya that relates to this:
she is at the youngest, 4 years old, and at the oldest, 5 nearing 6. we don't know her real age, all we know is she definitely lied about being 6;
she is very fixated on specifically world peace while twilight is focused on peace between ostania and westalis. the scientists are the very first we see talking about this, so it's likely their fault;
she is unreasonably well acquainted with classical language;
she has escaped the facility at LEAST 1 year ago;
and, one tidbit from the fanbook (page 29): "Anya has been reading minds for as long as she can remember," implying that her memory of a life before the lab is muddy at best and absent at worst.
that's all we know that i know of!!
if you got this far, thank you for reading :D hope any of this was interesting or sparked any theories >:] have a good day!
#sxf#spy x family#manga spoilers#project apple#anya forger#bond forger#sxf manga#spy x family manga#sxf manga spoilers#spy x family manga spoilers#analysis#meta#I DIDN'T OWN THE FANBOOK WHEN I FIRST MADE THE DRAFT FOR THIS BUT THEN I BOUGHT IT well my brother bought it for me#bless his heart#AND SO I WANTED TO READ THE ENTIRE THING BEFORE CONTINUING ON!!! didn't find much out in relation to this post specifically but#there's quite a lot to infer on how anya's powers work#and there's a distinction between what she reads (internal voices vs mind reading which would be digging into someone's subconscious)#so that would be super interesting to talk about but uh not in this post KLSDFJSDKL since it has little bearing on the project itself

I think we, DPS fans, don't talk about Charlie during the school's tribute to Neil enough.
He's not singing.
Meeks, Pitts and Knox are singing, letting all their feelings out.
Cameron is singing a little calmer. You can see the sadness in him though.
Todd is stuttering words, not even singingābut he's trying.
Charlie does not sing.
I'm sorry for the picture's quality.
At first I thought he didn't sing because he was angry at Neil for leaving all of them; the Dead Poets, Keating and his dreams of becoming an actor. We saw at the beginning of the film how Charlie tried to convince Neil to speak up to his parents. I think he really wanted Neil to be happy, and he knew he wouldn't be if he stayed silent and pursued being a doctor because of his father.
During Neil and Mr. Keating's talk in the office, Neil mentioned Charlie: "We are not a rich family like Charlie's" (quoted by memory). Charlie tried to make Neil pursue acting when they had different social backgrounds; Charlie could go against his parents and not ruin everything. But Neil was an only child from a family that was mantained by his father and no one else... and not particularly wealthy either.
Even if they had those differences, they didn't separate them. And both of them were boys with dreams they couldn't follow easily. Charlie was more rebellious (especially when it came to school's authorities). Neil was more of the type to go with whatever people wanted. Charlie was more risk-taking. Neil's risk in the whole movie was participating in the play (yes, the club wasn't a Neil risk; it was all of the poets').
Charlie was really proud of Neil for finally following his dreams.
"He's good. He's really good."
Sounds familiar?
"I was good. I was really good."
This parallel makes sense to me, especially if we analyze the very first scene of Charlie and Neil in the movie. As I said, Charlie wanted Neil to speak up to his father. And when he did and it all broke apart; Neil said words Charlie had said about him during the play.
Obviously, Charlie disliked Neil's dad. We can be sure about that, definitely.
The school's tribute to Neil was either Mr. Perry's idea or he gave the permission to do it. The authorities thought of Neil's death as the institution's problem. Keating was suspicious from the beginning because of his unconventional teaching methods (plus Mr. Perry thought Keating told Neil to keep his place in the performance, which he didābut he made it look like it was a real problem... 1950s, let's go).
Charlie didn't think this event of singing words of grief and so on was for Neil. Neil didn't die to be missed. Neil died because he would miss out on what he wanted to do. But that reasoning didn't even come across the authorities' heads.
I think of Charlie as a person who has an internal philosophy, a reasoning that most people wouldn't think of. So, when every single one of his friends are singing because they miss Neil; Charlie does not sing because this is a way to pay respects to Mr. Perry for losing his son. A way to say the authorities are right. A way to say "Neil... poor boy." Neil was miserable because he wasn't free. And his only way to be free was... not living.
I believe this "Charlie wasn't singing" thing can be interpreted in many, many ways. I probably overanalyzed it because 6 years of DPS make someone go insane eventually. What I do think is clear is that Neil and Charlie's friendship was very obvious from the start. And yes, the not singing thing is something to observe and think about... but their whole friendship isn't very talked about in the fandom! And I had the idea to write about not only the movie's scenes that have both of them, but also how I perceive it (hence why I would describe this post as a theory rather than facts).
I would love to see other people's takes on this subject too !!

I really like everything OP said here, and I'm adding on my own thoughts, because I love this little freak, and I've gotten very inspired by everything this person said. [ADDENDUM: Okay, OP got upset at me in the replies over this one, so I'll just clarify that not everything I say is a direct reflection of what they think, or what their post is trying to convey. I'd normally just trust that you guys would be able to see that with your eyes, and understand that I like showing off anything people have to say about Jimmy, regardless of what that is, but they have spoken.] [It sucks, because I was following them, and I genuinely did really like their post, there's no one concrete Jimmy interpretation to me, and I love hearing people's thoughts, but I guess not everyone's on my wavelength about that kinda stuff. Whoops!] I've always seen him as being predisposed to dark thoughts, violent tendencies, and sexual predation, not only because of trauma we're not privy to, but because he has a craving for control and power.
We know that before encountering Johnny he was relatively passive, even non-confrontational despite the ridicule he'd get from others. All of the anger he felt was kept internal, since he was too cowardly to act upon anything. However, Johnny and his violence towards others gave him the image of this perfect power fantasy, since he's everything that Jimmy wishes he could have for himself: respect, dominance, a brooding image. That's all just fantasy, but Johnny's a real guy, so seeing him partaking in all that made it look attainable to Jimmy, hence the instant obsession.
You can see how this makes them different as killers, since they're fundamentally driven by different things. Johnny kills for a variety of reasons, ranging from anger to sexual gratification, but it can come down to simple boredom and uncontrollable compulsion for him too. However, Jimmy's only driven by power and control. Yes, he thrives off attention from others, but he's looking for a specific kind of attention that allows him to feel power and control, and he gets that from hurting others, and being the scary killer-dude on the news and whatnot, basically rising above his station as the awkward, lanky goth kid that nobody liked in high-school.
As for his obsession with Johnny, I think the basis on which that's founded upon is deeply interesting. Yes, he's projecting all of his hopes and dreams onto this stranger, but he's really not wrong about them being similar. I think what makes Johnny such a cathartic image for Jimmy is that he's everything that he wishes he could be, while having all of his same flaws. They're both self-indulgent, self-pitying, probably depressed, and consumed by misanthropy. I think the fact that they share all the same shortcomings allows Jimmy to romanticize those parts of himself, rather than confronting those things for what they really are.
I think at his core, Jimmy's probably consumed by a lot of repressed self-hatred, considering the fact that he's vacated his own identity in its entirety, in favor of LARPing as somebody else. Through Johnny, not only is he trying to find the friendship and companionship he's severely lacking, but he's hoping somebody else can see something worthwhile inside of him. He doesn't even seem angry, nor does he fight back when he realizes Johnny's going to kill him, he just looks very sad and scared. Look at that face! Mind you, he's huge compared to Johnny, and probably stronger, so if Devi succesfully kicked Johnny's ass I'm sure Jimmy could have done the same. However, his positive feelings towards Johnny are very genuine, even if they're founded on a dysfunctional basis.
However, as OP noted, there are a lot of ways that Johnny and Jimmy are extremely different, and most interestingly, despite all of his immaturity there are things Jimmy has over Johnny. Particularly, he takes himself a lot less seriously, and doesn't need to find as many justifications and ego barriers for his actions, as he thrives purely off of villainizing himself for the power and control that gives. He's able to see that Johnny is a violent asshole wallowing in his own self-induced misery, and while he phrases it in a very half-formed, juvenile, Jimmy-esque way it's a true observation nonetheless. I see Jimmy as being a very direct and honest person, though that's probably less through virtue, and more just out of a tendency to report on himself due to a lack of social awareness. However, he likes Johnny anyways, there are an infinite amount of layers to the dynamics between these two, it makes me insane.
Here's something I never hear talked about in relation to these two though, and that's the fact that Jimmy has been stalking Johnny for literal years. He says that he started in what would chronologically fall in Issue #1, since he saw him mass-murdering at the Taco Hell. Well, we know that Issue #1 takes place two years before Issue #2 at minimum because Psychodoughboy forms two years before Mr. Eff according to the Director's Cut biographies. It's implied that the rest of the issues occur over a much smaller timeframe, nevertheless, it's safe to assume that Jimmy's been watching him for a long time. I wonder what he thought of Devi, seeing her escape...
Honestly, I could go on about this guy forever, but he's got so many facets for what amounts to a one-off strawman character. He's incredibly socially unaware and oblivious to that fact, yet he's able to succesfully speak in the same flowery prose as Johnny, and accurately point out his flaws, and craft his own weapons, and get away with murder without any of the supernatural aid that Johnny receives, and that's so so interesting!
My views on this š weird gross freak
Iām just gonna blabber on. Also Iām like reallyyy bad at explaining things and using my words, so if you see anything where youāre like ā?ā You can just ask and Iāll explain. I know Iām nonsensical but thatās part of the fun. Decoding sacred writings that are actually just a shopping list. ANYWAYS.
I think he does have similarities to Johnny, but what they have different is so different that it entirely negates the similarities. Theyāre very different individuals. Jimmy in my views, is someone who very much wants friendship. Connection to others, he yearns for it. Itās his main motivator. He cares so much about what others think of him, and wants all the attention. Most things he does I believe are for the attention of others. However thereās obviously some wrong shit in his head. Very wrong shit. These things make him turn to violence and other disgusting things, heās infatuated with them, and by extension, those who commit said acts. Really their only similarities are violence, and seclusion. But Jimmy is excluded by force, he doesnāt want to be, he wants to be apart of everything
So he sees Johnny, and projects his own shit onto him. So he kinda views Johnny the way a sad internet teen views their comfort character. He also sees Johnny as a way out, a way out of his seclusion. He thinks theyāll relate to eachother and be best friends, obviously thatās not how it goes. But he looked up to Johnny, and genuinely truly thought they were the same. Seeing him as a role model who would help him, someone who would view himself the way he views Johnny. He thought they were on the same page when they were not. Instead of being viewed as something relatable and in need of help that Johnny could give, he was viewed as a delusional idiotic pest and a disgusting creature. Their motivations are entirely different is what Iām trying to say I suppose
I believe Jimmy doesnāt realize how crazy he is bc people just canāt tolerate his presence. So he doesnāt know whatās normal since heās never been around normal for long. I also think he finds a lot of things boring, except for violence, because violence can be whatever you want it to be. Something funny, something sexual, something artsy, whatever. It can be an outlet for whatever you want. So I think thatās why he was drawn to that instead of other outlets, also because of a natural anger and frustration upon being treated differently and exiled from society. Itās a process with multiple steps 1) heās already prone to violent thoughts like some people are 2) he uses violence to cope with feelings of isolation and his anger towards those who caused that for him 3) it becomes a ācure allā for all his feelings. And of course, violence expands to other things. Like sexual violence (to be clear, I donāt think Jimmy is a good guy. I just like thinking too hard about characters that has 3 pages worth of content)
I see Jimmy as the kind of guy to join internet groups and forums, searching for community, only for him to get banned and hated on. This is due to him not knowing how to behave correctly, and not really caring to know. He views this as people hating him for being different and hating him just as a person. When no dude, you say edgy fucked up shit and see no issues with it. I think all his violence and behavior and yearning is all subconscious btw. I donāt think he knows why he acts the way he does, he just sees it as who he is, which is why he takes rejection so hard. He doesnāt realize change is an option and he doesnāt even know what to change, as he doesnāt know whatās him, and whats a wayward response to his emotions.
He joins these communities, acts how he does, gets banned, and never reflects on himself. Because thatās hard to do, and I assume heād be like this for awhile, so it would turn more into a fucked up routine of his. Heās trapped in it. I think when it comes to him in theā¦idk goth community, how he has the name āDarknessā and dresses like that, I think this is just another attempt of his to find community. But it doesnāt work bc I donāt think heād care much about it. I think he was drawn to it bc ooo edgy and all, and he sees them talking about death and all that, and he misunderstands it all. He thinks people genuinely are as violent as he is, so he takes all talks of death and edgy whatevers entirely seriously, while for others itās more of a poetic and aesthetic thing. He doesnāt understand why death obsessed goths arenāt out killing people themselves. I think he chose the name Darkness bc it sounded like other names in the community and no one he knew had taken it yet. Also bc heās like āohhh Iām so dark and evilllā. He didnāt put much thought into it, because he doesnāt care much for the community, and the reason he doesnāt care is bc he doesnāt understand why they say things he thinks but are nothing like him. Like I just said for them itās poetry and something interesting and different, but for him thatās his normal. I worded this as best as I could it still donāt make sense. I need a whiteboard
Heād view himself as evil bc he is naturally inclined to awful and dark things and he doesnāt know why. I believe though itās a mix of nature and nurture
TLDRā¦Jimmy is predisposed to dark thoughts and violent urges, and him being isolated due to not knowing how to act right makes his dark shit get worse and worse since his views on whatās normal keep getting foggier and foggier. And he projects onto Johnny, someone whoās also violent and isolated, and takes comfort in his imagined version of him. Only to die realizing the one person he could find company in and get help from and understanding from, hated him just as much as anyone else. No oneās reading all this shit bro wtf am I DOINGGG.
This is very messy and general. Iām kinda just talking to myself here so that I can further investigate these thoughts deeper. Also I like yammering

VotV Speculation Megapost
(For posterity's sake, the latest major release is 0.8) (Also, buckle in. This post is a long one.) (Edit 9/20/24: Added Addendum 1) (Edit 10/14/24: Added Addendum 2) It should be extremely obvious, but spoilers ahead.
As we all know, Voices of the Void has a "story breadcrumbs" approach to its plot. Combine that with its alpha status, and we're left with a lack of hard answers. However, some pieces did seem to click into place. This is far from anything definitive, but here are some of the conclusions I've drawn. Let's start with everybody's favorite:
Part 1: The Arirals
god i want one to hold me like that
You know em. You love em. Like 90% of the fanart is about them. But the question is... what the hell are they doing here? Judging by the fact that they construct a campsite in the facility, they clearly expect to be here for a while. A common interpretation I hear from people is that the ones out in the facility are either political refugees, or just some sort of benign "tourist group". I've personally come to a different conclusion. Let's consider what they brought with them.
Exhibit A: The weapon (left)
The weapon they drop around Day 24 is no mere Star Trek phaser. If you drop it in the main building, pretty much EVERYTHING in the building is going to be sent flying from the resulting blast. Not only that, but the "human-wieldable" version that can be unlocked for the sandbox mode has one hell of a fire rate. Something tells me that there's no way in hell this thing is a civilian-grade weapon. And, as established in a previous post of mine, they're kitted out in full-body armored stealth suits.
Exhibit B: The stealth suit (Kerf dutifully remains there for scale)
These aren't tourists or runaways. They're goddamn Black Ops. But you're probably asking, "If that's what they are, then why do they have nothing better to do than to steal shrimp and prank you?" Don't worry, I'll get to that later. Eventually. Maybe.
For now, let's move on to a third thing of theirs: The letter to Kel.
Exhibit C: Esraniki's Letter (D-, see me after english class)
This is the letter left at the Ariral camp if you have maxxed reputation with them. There's one line in particular that's always stood out to me. "GET WE HOME YOU GET DEATH AVOID" So... why can't they go home? Let's review: A: They have perfectly functional spacecraft parked right behind you. Even if they were broken, surely some random Pre-FTL primitive wouldn't be able to help with a mechanical failure in their technology. Hell, they buzz you at the radio tower with one. So there seems to be nothing physically stopping them from leaving. B: They've come kitted out with some serious weapons and armor C: Something in the facility is drawing the attention of all manner of extraterrestrials (and ghosts and demons. are 'metaterrestrials' a good word for them?) So my take? They're monitoring something, waiting for an opportunity to act upon it. (In keeping with the Patch Note naming convention, I will be calling this unknown something "The Threat") Not only that, this 'opportunity' may only open up with the assistance of a human. But what could Dr. Kel possibly do that an Ariral couldn't? Well, I can think of one thing he can do better... Interface with human technology.
Exhibit D: Ariral Communique (quality: shit) Computer technology isn't some universal constant. You can't make a program and expect it to magically run on alien technology with an unknown architecture. This ain't Independence Day. The fact that the Arirals barely managed to send a heavily-garbled message to Kel's computer, quite frankly, speaks of an extreme amount of effort on their part. And it was all just to say the word "OUTSIDE".
If The Threat has some ties to human technology, then perhaps Kel actually could be more qualified to deal with it than the Ariral Black Ops. Hmm... An unknown threat with ties to human technology. Could it possibly involve...
Part 2: The Incredibly Suspicious Bunker
"I left a 'Do not enter' note on the floor. That'll stop people from investigating!" This damn thing is quite obviously, as TVtropes would put it, The Very Definitely Final Dungeon. It is my firm belief that this is what the Arirals were sent to monitor, and where The Threat can be found. But we can't really get much further in than a few doors. So... what's in there? An easy assumption to make is that it's some sort of fallout/storm shelter. But something nearby might tell a different story...
Exhibit E: *squints* ...Liberty Prime? If you take a metal detector over to the bunker entrance, you'll quickly discover a buried drive nearby. The image you just saw is its contents. It's clear that something is being depicted here. What exactly it is, well, that's hard to say. but if you look at that teeny tiny thing at the top, you'll see something that looks like the Alpha base and its radio tower
oh god we're getting into crusty duende video territory now
What this says to me is that there is a colossal something underneath the base. Some sort of mega-facility? Unnatural cave formations? Something else entirely? Or I could be looking at it entirely wrong. But the point is, it's very likely that something extremely expansive is down there.
What if we could just take a peek a liiiittle bit further in? Well, there is ONE way...
Exhibit F: The Least Cursed Elevator in Horror Fiction
Roughly around 3:33 each night, there is a chance that a camera inside the bunker will become active. It's monitoring what appears to be a heavy-duty elevator coated in blood. An elevator like this would also indicate something buried deep underneath the base. Say, this elevator seems familiar...
youtube
Exhibit G: Monique Santificer's Extremely Ominous Foreshadowing
...Huh. I'm sure that only means good things. So we have a Hellivator and evidence that there's some place that you'd need a Hellivator to get to. Are there any other clues around? Well, there's that handy instruction book on robotics. You can make your own little friend!
POV: You're 5'11 and she's 6'0 And... Oh! looking back at that camera, it looks like someone else made their... their own... friend...
Exhibit H: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA- ...I don't think they followed the instructions to the letter. So it seems the people in the bunker were working on combining robots and, er, 'biomass'. I don't think our meaty friend here is The Threat itself, but I do believe that it is some aspect of it, or at least a result of it. And whatever The Threat is, it seems to be "leaking" out of the bunker. After all, this toothy bot here seems to have little siblings burrowing out from underground!
Exhibit I: should start running Kerfus. Kerfur. Whatever name they have, they love you! Such a shame that the flesh inhabiting their chassis does not.
they seriously recalled the ++ models over a little thing like this, smh Something deep underground, cursed flesh, and occult sigils. Hmm. Things would tie together neatly if there were, say, some sort of demon around associated with flesh and dark depths.
Part 3: Furfur (and conclusions)
"I WATCH YOU SHIT AT NIGHT" The Great Earl of Hell and raw flesh afficianato, it's Furfur! Demonology refers to him as a liar, but also a teacher of secrets. And he seems to really really like flesh. Not bones, though. He's always leaving those behind.
They say that if you burn an offering of flesh at his altar, he'll give you a marketable Furfur plushie!
The children who survived loved them! Interestingly, there's a certain location connected to Furfur: The bottom of the well. If you pass out at the bottom of the well, you will end up in a (dream of a?) mysterious structure.
Exhibit J: all shall be well and all manner of thing shall be well
A few things of note in this place: -More demonic sigils -The only 'exit' is a tunnel leading upward with a broken ladder. And even if you could reach up there, Furfur's giant skull-face is blocking the way. -A unique knife, which when examined in the inventory, says that it was found "deep underground".
How very interesting that this flesh-loving demon has his own little place down in the depths of the earth. And you say the bunker reaching downwards has been spawning horrific robot-flesh amalgamations? Robots that are specifically of human design?
Well then. So here's what I think is going down:
no i'm not crazy it's invisible alien catgirls versus demon cyborgs you weren't listening were you?
-Some scientists from before did a Very Bad Thing in the bunker depths. If I had to venture a guess, it's that they bargained with Furfur for secrets of the flesh, perhaps in the pursuit of cybernetics, biocomputers, or somesuch. This resulted in the Very Bad Thing happening, thus creating The Threat. -The Threat was contained to some extent, but is starting to noticeably leak out. It is also severe enough to have drawn extraterrestrial attention. -The Arirals have sent a squad to monitor the situation and act if necessary. Seeing as there's been no urgent need to act as of yet, they are bored out of their skulls and taking it out on you. -The fact that the bunker hasn't been blown up by catgirl black ops already says to me that the situation down there is delicate, and a 'guns-blazing' approach would be inadvisable. Not only that, but The Threat seems to be tied to technology they have little knowledge of. They would most likely need outside assistance if they want a 'clean' resolution to the problem. -And wouldn't you know it? Right there in the facility is some nerdy, crusty, half-crazed twink that seems to be very proficient in handling human technology. How very convenient.
"average person eats 3 roaches a year" factoid actually just statistical error. Dr. Kel, who-
That's how I think this ties together, personally. Of course, there's always unaccounted for 'loose ends' that may or may not be tied to the Bunker Conspiracy (the rozital pit in particular has been bugging me with its vagueness). Plus there's always the chance that I misinterpreted things like a dumbass. There were a few other smaller things I wanted to cover, but my fingers hurt from typing, and my ability to hyperfixate has its limits. And sorry if the screengrabs are a bit mismatched, I've already spent hours on this post without having to get screenshots from the game myself. If anyone actually read through this monstrosity of a post, congratulations! If you're as deeply brainrotted as I am, feel free to point out the reasons I'm dumb and wrong :)
Addendum 1: Meta Aspects
no, not this. wrong place. wrong time.
Every now and then I hear talk of lore clarifications in Discord servers, Google Docs, etc. Will I be covering these?
(source) The reason? I want to give my impressions based purely on the work as published. Death of the Author and whatnot. The furthest I'll reach 'outside' the games are those ambiguous little teasers on YouTube, which you don't have to be in any 'specific server' or anything to see.
youtube
haha what if funni meme robot was irreversibly corrupted by the horrors?
Think of it as me giving a form of feedback on how the game is presented as an isolated work. Anyway, I'll be posting another Addendum later, connecting more demon stuff to the bunker. Fun! One thing I intend to investigate between then and now is a rumor of a very poorly documented... item interaction. As a little preview, consider this note.
It seems, in my pursuit of knowledge regarding a mysterious bunker in an incomplete videogame story, I find myself investigating a skeletal entity of ambiguous origin described as having a single glowing eye. God. Fucking. Dammit. Every time with this shit.
This always seems to happen whenever the protagonist is bullied by tall monstergirls
Addendum 2: Classified
Progress on my investigation has been slow due to a combination of poor RNG and real-life stuff. Fun fact: I've never encountered the fossilhound in my many months of playing, and it looks like that won't change anytime soon!
I'll get you one day, ya boney bastard. In the meantime, it seems that someone has leaked classified pokemon data communications from our employers...
youtube
And just who do we encounter within the first few weeks?
Our classified documents are their vacation photos
So it seems that at the very least, our employers seem to be aware of the Arirals. So to what end do they want to draw them out? And why would the Arirals show any particular interest in a human presence in this facility specifically?
They clearly seem to be hiding their presence from the world at large with their cloaking ships and whatnot, but they seem almost eager to grab the attention of anyone working at this particular site.
And, as everyone already knows, Arirals are certified Goobers. They form like 3/5ths of the Counsel of Goobers*. The ones we encounter at the very least are very much not what our employers expect to kill us. So our employers are also aware of the existence of some other threat, possibly even THE Threat. *the remaining members are Kerfuses and Dinguses
Truly an incomprehensible menace from beyond the stars. (source)
Personally, I feel like this all feeds back into my previous thoughts. There is clearly a Threat at this location, and the Arirals probably believe that they may need human assistance to do something here. Or maybe I'm just biased towards whatever random thoughts got cooked up in my head.
Anyway, hopefully next time I'll be back with reports of yanking the lifecrystal out from the Fossilhound's head and shoving it up its ass. I am so, SO sick of trying to get that thing to show up.
#votv spoilers#votv#ariral#spoilers#tw blood#dr kel#voices of the void#votv speculation#speculation#furfur#kerfur#kerfus#kerfus omega#this is what hyperfixation and brainrot does to you#i should have been in bed like five hours ago#Youtube

The Inferno Theory: The Chara Theory to End All Chara Theories
Here we are! Nine years of Undertale. And seeing how Chara is heavily associated with the number 9 (AND THAT TOBY FOX FINALLY TALKED ABOUT THEM), I can't think of a better way to celebrate the occasion than by dedicating this 5000-word-long theory about them? Y'all remember when people used to make long-ass theories about Chara? Yeah, they're coming back with a vengeance! To say I have a colossal hyperfixation is a massive understatement. No character in all of fiction has had a bigger impact on my life than this little rose-cheeked, cocoa-addicted freak. Iāve been a Chara fan for as long as Iāve been an Undertale fan, and you can bet that my understanding of them has changed a lot since. And now I have the pleasure of sharing said understandings with yāall!
Once upon a time, there was an aroace autistic who, like most of yāall, had a very unhealthy obsession with Undertale. And unlike most of you, he thought the Genocide Route was really fun. Most fans talk about how unhappy they felt killing everyone, but for me, I felt like a polar bear at a baby harp seal convention. I got a disturbing level of happiness out of turning everyone to dust. Hell, the only unhappiness I felt was when I couldnāt turn Monster Kid to dust.
Oh well, at least I got a good consolation prize!
I was one sadistic son of a gun, and so I was even more delighted to find out I had a secret admirer/partner-in-crime and that they joined in on the fun because I was such a goshdarn inspiration to them. Not wishing to disappoint my self-appointed partner, I erased the world without a second thought, eagerly awaiting what we might get to do together.
So you can guess I was pretty taken aback when, instead of a warm welcome, they started lecturing me about how I couldnāt accept the worldās destruction and that I was the one fully responsible for it (even though they were eager to take credit for it earlier). I didnāt think much of it at first. Initially, I just thought that they were just irritated that I was undoing what we had worked so hard to accomplish.
But as this game taught me time after time, you should never trust your first impressions. Those first impressions would crumble to dust when they said this.
To say I was completely baffled is an understatement. Why the hell would this prepubescent genocidal maniac be so obsessed over whether or not I think Iām above consequences? So obsessed to the point they would tell me to go to hell if I told them no? It was at that moment I realized there was something more to this character than meets the eye. But for a long time, I couldnāt seem to figure out what that something was. And it didnāt seem like anyone could figure that out either.
Iām very much a veteran of the fan wars that have emerged surrounding Chara. In fact, one might even say I am a deserter of sorts, as I am a former member of the Chara Defence Squad, Offense Squad, and Neutralist Squad. But Iām not gonna be a stuck-up and say everyoneās a canon-ignoring idiot except for me and that Iām the only one who knows what Toby Fox intended Chara to be. Even though I ended up with a very different take than yours (and will certainly argue why itās the best), I owe you all your discussions a huge debt, and I wouldnāt be here if I hadnāt gotten invested in your interpretations, to begin with. Not to mention that, contrary to what some may argue, youāve made some valid points to complement them.
And while the debate that resulted from Charaās ambiguous morality has led to a lot of controversy and even toxicity, it has also been a source of some FANTASTIC CONTENT. Like seriously, would we have gotten those badass renditions of Stronger Than You if no one thought Chara was an awful person? Would we have gotten Man on the Internetās beautiful rendition of Star if no one thought Chara was a good person (turned awful)?
It would be utter hypocrisy for me to ask of you to approach me and my arguments (or anyone who accepts them) with understanding and good faith only to then not do the same to anyone who doesnāt agree with me. In this theory, I will definitely argue why some points made about Chara are flawed; points that you might hold yourself. But that doesnāt automatically mean that you (or your takes) are intellectually or morally inferior to mine. And besides, Iām not Toby Fox.
So with that said, why did I eventually came to disagree with pretty much everyone about Chara? Because, one way or another, I couldnāt find a take that clicked with me personally as I felt there were various inconsistencies and issues holding them back. I looked at YouTube videos, subreddits, Tumblr essays, Twitter threads, and even forums on the Steam Community. But I couldnāt really find what I thought were satisfactory answers to the questions I had about Charaās motivations, role in the game, and relationship with the player.
And then, one day, I found those answers. It all happened when I asked myself: āWhat if Chara didnāt turn against meā¦ because they were always against me from the start?!ā
I donāt mean that Chara only saw you as a means to an end. I mean that YOU were the end. What if Chara didnāt use you so they could screw over the monsters but they used the monsters so they could screw over YOU.
You probably think Iām insane, donāt you? And youāre right! I AM INSANE! AND SO IS THIS WHOLE DAMN THEORY!!! But somehow, someway, it just works!! And Iāll show you why and how!!!
What you are about to read is the culmination of six years of reading and critiquing Chara takes and theories of every kind and quality, whether it be Judgement Boyās Who is the Real Villain of Undertale to Wandydoodlesā Oblivion Theory. Six years of examining the arguments and counterarguments of Chara defenders, offenders, and neutralists alike. Six years of looking in every corner of the UTDR fandom. From the tranquil lands of Quora. To the dark recesses of Reddit. To the intellectual wastelands of Twitter. To the fiery hellsite of Tumblr. So, without further ado, get ready for some of the most pure, unadulterated, high-octane, universe-collapsing neurodivergence youāve ever seen in your life!!!!!
Part 1: The demonic heritage of the "demon who comes when people call its name".
Have you ever had one of those moments where youāve asked yourself, āWhat the actual hell is this guy talking about?ā I bet youāre having that moment right now. Everything about their character post-death, including their motives, their methods, and their relationship with you, is perfectly reflected in one of their most famous (or rather infamous) lines:
When most people hear the word demon, the first thing that comes to mind is a being made of pure evil whose only purpose in life is to destroy all things good in the world. Right?
Well, yes, but actually, no. Itās a little more complicated than that. To argue that Chara is a demon because theyāre simply āan evil little twerp that enjoys being evilā doesnāt do them or their role in Undertale justice (although that hasnāt stopped people from trying to argue that). To understand why calling themselves a demon is EXTREMELY important, we need to dive into the wonderful (and totally not controversial) world of religious beliefs!
In ancient and modern religions, demons are a little more complex than just ethereal jackasses with a vendetta against virtue and righteousness. Though they vary from faith to faith, most demons have a specific set of qualities and tropes that make them integral to whatever faith theyāre in. You also see these demonic qualities in fiction thatās derived or inspired by religions, and since Undertaleās lore and worldbuilding have a heavy emphasis on the spiritual and divine, you can see them in Chara. Since Undertale is a game of āWesternā origin, you can definitely see they share qualities that are all too familiar with devils of āWesternā religions. In classic devil fashion, they target those with weak integrities or suspect morals; they tempt you with the promise of fulfilling your desires at your and everyone elseās expense; theyāre able to control your body as you grow their power through your sins, and hell, they even do the thing where they make a deal for your soul. Also...
But though it's evident that Chara encourages you to do āevil,ā THEY THEMSELVES are not responsible for it. Yes, Chara encouraged you to kill, but YOU are the one who acted on those encouragements. In fact, YOU are the one who encouraged THEM to help you out! They walked down the dark path with you, but you didnāt really give them anywhere else they could walk. You had all the power and every chance to turn back and no reason to keep walking. And yet you persisted.
But that does beg the question, why did you walk it at all? What could possibly inspire you to give all of these characters happiness, satisfaction, and peace and then rip it all away? Because you decided that giving everyone the most satisfying ending was not satisfying enough for you. Because there was more that you could experience for yourself, even if it meant making everyone else experience something absolutely horrific. It wasnāt enough for you to fill the glass only halfway. You needed to fill it to the brim. You wanted to reach the absolute. Even if doing the Genocide Run was a bad experience for you, you CANNOT deny it was a fulfilling one. And Chara knows it, too. It aināt exactly a coincidence that fulfillment and fullness are recurring motifs in Charaās character.
Like all demons, Chara is able to tempt the wicked and sinful by targeting our greatest weaknesses and deficiencies. Itās no different from how Succubi and Incubi target those who succumb to the sin of lust. Thatās why you wonāt go after my aroace ass anytime soon. But I digress.
But Chara doesn't just tempt us by exploiting our need to fill the glass to the brim but also because of how they exploit the satisfaction we get from watching it fill up, that is to say, the satisfaction that comes from trying to achieve fulfillment.
We humans are addicted to progression as much as we are to completion, and in an RPG like Undertale, the satisfaction of progression comes in the form of NUMBERS. Not just the numbers that flash on the screen when you battle enemies but also the ones that go up when you finish said enemies off, whether it be your hit points, experience points, and so on. And Undertale isnāt any ordinary RPG; itās one where its RPG elements are interwoven into the fabric of the gameās universe. Because of that, Chara is able to use these elements in their world to influence those outside of it.
But Chara does not just influence us through the numbers that increase but also the ones that decrease. Thatās why the first thing they do when we reach Snowdin is give us a tally.Ā
Itās not just there to measure progress. Itās also there to incentivize us to keep progressing. It gives us a small dose of satisfaction thatās enough to distract us from the mundanity and misery of the murder run, like a loading bar on a loading screen. And just like with loading screens, the farther it progresses, the harder it gets to turn away. Why would you want all the lives youāve taken and the stats youāve gained to amount to nothing? Why would you want to hit reset and go through those brutal fights with Sans and Undyne again? You canāt empty out the glass, not when youāre that much closer to filling it to the brim. Speaking of Sans and Undyne, itās quite interesting that even though they barely know you, they know exactly why you wonāt take your foot off the pedal, so to speak.
But thatās not the only thing driving you, isnāt it? Chara knows that there was something else that was spurning you along. Something more powerful and more dangerous than your addiction to progression and completion: PRIDE.Ā
Perhaps the real reason you kept giving in to sin until it was far too late was because you didnāt think it would be too late. You didnāt hold back because you thought you would be able to go back. You thought you could just absolve your sins with the press of a button like you did in countless worlds before. You thought you could dive in, touch the bottom, and come back out of the water. But what were you getting into? How deep would you have gone? And would you have gone in if you knew you couldnāt possibly return? You know you wouldnāt. And Chara knows it, too. That brings us back to the dialogue I showed you at the beginning of this theory. The one said changed everything I knew about this character, and I firmly believe that this is the MOST important line of dialogue in the entire franchise.
PART 2: THE PART WHERE I (PRETEND TO) DESTROY 9 YEARS OF ESTABLISHED FANON!
When I say that that little blurb about being above consequences is ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL, I do not say that lightly. It isnāt just important to Chara's character, but the game of Undertale as a whole! Anyone whoās serious about Charaās character should never take this for granted because Chara sure as hell does not.
Itās not just our refusal to accept the worldās destruction thatās a huge-ass deal to Chara; itās the arrogance and complacency that accompanies it, rooted in the position and privileges we have as the player. It matters to them so much that theyāre willing to completely forgo bartering for our soul (which they say they want) if we donāt admit that we have that belief!
And yet, despite Chara taking this subject so seriously, the people who are analyzing their character ironically donāt. Generally speaking, most people simply brush this line off as nothing more than something they do to help them on their quest to achieve their goals. So, with that said, letās talk about what those supposed goals actually are.
In all my years of reading and assessing countless Chara theories and interpretations, Iāve discovered that everyone actually agrees on what Chara's goals are. They just canāt agree on why they want them. Said goals are A) reach the absolute, B) max out their numbers/power, C) erase the world, and/or D) eradicate all monsters. But what if itās actually the other way around? What if those things were the means to an end rather than the ends themselves?
What if the true goal of the ādemon who comes when people call its nameā was just like that of the demons of old: not to be your partner in crime, but to torment and punish you for your crimes? To make you face CONSEQUENCES!
Iām not making this argument simply because it makes Chara look more badass (though I think it totally does, lol). I firmly believe that Undertaleās post-Genocide content is written so that Charaās character can only make sense if that was Charaās goal from start to finish. Because if Charaās endgame was any of those four I mentioned earlier, their character kinda falls apart because they're awfully inconsistent about fulfilling them. And those inconsistencies are evident in the Second Geno Ending.
Discrepancy 1) They say they will āappear time and time againā to help us āeradicate the enemy and become strong,ā and yet they call us perverted for eradicating everyone time and time again.
You can argue that they didnāt want us to recreate the world in the first place and just move on to another world, but if so, why let us come back at all? And if itās to get our soul, why do they keep around this world after we have it? This leads us to...
Discrepancy 2) They tell us to ERASE the world and move on to the next, and yet they allow us to restore it without a hitch after we give them our SOUL, seeing how thereās no black void when we start the game again.
If Chara was powerless to stop us from coming back, this wouldnāt be such a big deal. But they CLEARLY DEMONSTRATE that theyāre able to stop the player from restoring the world, as seen in the first post-genocide ending. And yet they donāt use this power after the first time the world is erased (WHICH YOU WOULD THINK THEY WOULD WANT TO USE SINCE THEY WANT TO ERASE THE WORLD AND MOVE ON TO ANOTHER)! Seeing how the world is back again without us doing anything makes the restoration of the world like something that Chara CHOSE ON THEIR OWN VOLITION. And what makes this all the more damning is...
Discrepancy 3) They tell us theyāre down bad for increasing our ATK, DEF, EXP, and LV to the max and erasing the world and everyone in it, and yet they TELL US TO DEVIATE FROM THE ONLY ROUTE THAT ACCOMPLISHES THAT (which, as stated before, they call us perverse for doing it again).
So, let me get something straight. You tell us you want to āeradicate the enemyā and ā erase this pointless world,ā and yet not only are you allowing us to undo all of that, you want us to do something INSTEAD OF THAT??? Itās funny how you lecture us about how we cannot accept the worldās destruction BECAUSE, APPARENTLY, YOU WONāT EITHER!!!!! Also, before I forget...
Discrepancy 4)
WHAT KIND OF MISANTHROPE DEDICATES THEIR WHOLE LIFE TO WIPING OUT HUMANITY, GETS GIFT-WRAPPED A CHANCE TO DO THAT, AND THEN JUST PASSES IT UP?!?!?!
On behalf of misanthropes everywhere, I am DEEPLY disappointed in you!
So it doesnāt matter if you believe Chara is always evil, good, or detached from morality entirely. Because Chara has the same goal across all versions, they all succumb to the same inconsistencies!
Funny how most people see them as this embodiment of the addictive nature of levelling up and consuming everything in a piece of media and all that jazz WHEN THEY SEEM TO CASUALLY GIVE UP ON IT!!!!!!
And if you argue they want a Soulless Pacifist Run when they suggest āanother path,ā then ask yourself, what does that give them that a Genocide Run doesnāt? Keep in mind, aside from a scribbled-out photograph, we donāt see how many monsters or humans they killed besides the main characters or how much power and stats they gained from it. And itās not like we see them erase the world afterward since only the genocide run has that infamous wall of red 9s. Not to mention, the genocide run is the most secure way of accomplishing their goals since they have the backing of the player. Not only that, but itās also the safest and most efficient way to erase everyone and increase stats to the fullest, and we all know how Chara feels about efficiency.
So Chara has no reason to pick the Soulless pacifist ending over the Genocide Run if they want to achieve their end of increasing numbers and consuming the worldā¦ unless those things were a means to an end rather than ends themselves.
Indeed it is coming together! Thatās the other reason their statement, āYou think youāre above consequences,ā is so damn important! Theyāre notĀ telling us why we sinned, but it reveals they intend to make us suffer for those sins, and how.
Thatās why Chara is seemingly so inconsistent about erasing the world. Because it was never about the world. It was all about YOU.
[SIDE NOTE: Iām sure many of you will point out that if Chara wanted us to get a Soulless ending in this world, then why would they encourage us to āmove on to the next?ā I donāt think this is too big an issue for two reasons. First, this line is meant to emphasize that, like all demons, Chara is inescapable and that no matter what world you go to (within their own universe), Chara will always follow you now that youāve unleashed them. Second, because their goal concerns us and not the world theyāre a part of, their character avoids the aforementioned inconsistencies that hamper the other Chara theories much more severely, in my opinion.]
Part 3: Contrapasso
Now Iām sure some of yāall might think that Chara doesnāt need to yearn for our torment to achieve the impact of the Soulless ending and that just because Chara is a demon doesnāt automatically mean they need to screw us over. You are right in that not everyone who makes a Faustian Bargain needs to have malicious intentions toward the people theyāre taking advantage of (Kuybey from Madoka Magica is a great example of that). But Chara does need it! Not only does it make their character more narratively cohesive, but also makes their character more thematically impactful. And itās more in tune with their demonic nature for them to want to torment us.
Because demons represent something more terrifying than evil itself. They represent the terrible price of embracing it, a price that all evildoers fear more than anything, and that all demons want seek to inflict upon us. Like most demons, Chara isnāt encouraging us to sin to fill the emptiness in our soul (or even their own). They did it to perpetuate that torturously empty and unfulfilled state for all eternity, a state which even themselves now endure.
Now, youāve probably noticed that Iāve talked a lot about the themes of fulfillment and emptiness, and itās for a good reason since those themes are heavily featured in Undertale. I mean, how could it not? Because concepts of demons, hell, and sins (which are explicitly mentioned in the game) are deeply intertwined with the concept of emptiness. The theologian Thomas Aquinas once defined evil as not a presence but as an absence (of that which is good). Darkness is the absence of light; war is the absence of peace; bigotry is the absence of tolerance; pride is the absence of humility, etc. You see this reflected in not just Christian theology but also fiction as a whole, as a lot of villains are motivated by a desire to obtain something that they believe canāt be without. Whether it be wealth, status, recognition, power, the death of an individual, or even just sadistic pleasure.
Since demons are beings that are inseparable from evil itself, the life of a demon is forever cursed by unceasing and unbearable emptiness. Hell, the word damnation originated from the Latin word damnum, which literally means loss! Theyāre not exactly partying in hell while your immortal soul is being slow-roasted for eternity. Theyāre burning in that lake of fire and brimstone along with you! They canāt end their damnation, not because they donāt want to but because they simply canāt. Theyāre fated to be bereft of the satisfaction or fulfillment found in Heaven or Earth, a fate that is worse than death in every sense of the word, especially since they canāt experience death anymore. Because of that, a demon embodies what is perhaps the most terrifying form of evil of all: not one rooted in a desire to rid the emptiness and unfulfillment within themselves, but a desire to inflict them upon others. Because as a wise philosopher once said:
We see this horrific state of mutually assured suffering everywhere across fiction. From goofy, lighthearted tokusatsu's...
...to nightmarish sci-fi dystopias...
...to a little indie game made 9 years ago.
Oh yeah. Donāt think I was gonna talk about emptiness without mentioning everyoneās favourite homicidal fauna-turned-flora, especially not with lines like this.
Take one to know one! And it canāt be a coincidence that the game emphasizes the theme of emptiness when giving the spotlight to the three characters that have committed the most āevilā: Flowey/Asriel, Chara, and YOU.
Quite the unholy trinity going on here, eh? It truly is fascinating how the emptiness led us to work with each other to exterminate all monsters. And itās also interesting how the unique kind of emptiness we have eventually led us to work against each other. Whether it be Flowey wishing to preserve his sentimentality for his long-gone sibling, us players wanting to maintain our (perverted) sentimentality for the world of Undertale, or Chara weaponizing these sentimentalities to exact their misanthropic hatred.
Remember how I said that Chara was a lousy misanthrope because they keep letting us bring back the humans they wanted annihilated when they were alive? That does make them a lousy misanthropeā¦ unless their misanthropy found a higher priority target: YOU!!!!! Charaās desire to torment us didnāt come out of thin air. The same hatred that drove them to wipe out the humans of their world years ago is the same hatred thatās driving them to get at the humans of our world, even if it means destroying those who once embraced them. And now, that hatred is more potent and destructive than ever before, so much so that itās no wonder Toriel was able to feel it when she endured that fatal blow after the Geno Run began.
Do you think witnessing what soullessness did to sweet little Asriel wasnāt already terrifying and tragic enough? Just try to imagine what it couldāve done to a vengeful, traumatized, chocolate-addicted problem child so consumed by hatred that they poisoned themselves just for a chance to wipe out their own kind. All of that hatred of humanity is still alive and well, and now it has no humanity to hold it back.Ā
And what could be a more fitting target for a MISANTHROPE that calls themselves a DEMONā¦ than a HUMAN that wants to play GOD?
After all, the only thing demons love more than tormenting mortals is warring with Gods.
Why else do you think that Chara winks right at you if we make Frisk stay with Toriel? Because thatās who the Soulless Ending was meant for. Itās when theyāre finally able to unleash all that animosity and hatred thatās been lurking behind that smile ever since we killed everyone in the Ruins. Itās the moment that theyāve been patiently waiting for because they knew thatās when it would hit you the hardest.
And what makes the Soulless Pacifist Ending very special compared to other ābad endingsā isnāt simply because they destroy those we pretend to care about (may I remind you that you did do the genocide run, after all). But they destroy something much more valuable to us as the players: OUR OMNIPOTENCE. Chara doesnāt destroy people for the sake of destroying them. But because in doing so they destroy our arrogant belief that nothing could possibly challenge the invisibility and invulnerability we players take for granted.
It's all too human that those with the most power are the least willing to lose it (or even take responsibility for it). And in a world where we should have absolute power, we thought there would be no consequences for abusing it. So what could be a more fitting and frightful punishment than having to actually face them? Missing out on the best ending in a video game is one thing. But to forever lose the power to achieve it ever again?! Now thatās terrifying!
Throughout myth, legend, and religion, sinners are often punished in a way befitting of the sin theyāve committed. In Greek Mythology, Tantalus was damned for trying to feed the Gods the flesh of his murdered son with eternal hunger and thirst despite being within armās reach of water and food. In Danteās Inferno, those who succumb to wrath are forever doomed to fight each other in a river of mud. And since Undertale is no stranger to concepts such as hell, sins, and demons, you can damn well be sure that thereās going to be damnation fitting for the sins that drove you to complete the genocide run.
You completed the Genocide Run because you believed ending their lives would be fulfilling. Now, you can no longer get any fulfillment out of saving their lives.
I mean, where else can you get your precious fulfillment? Those paltry neutral endings? They only offer a fraction of what the pacifist ending offered. And the genocide ending has been drained of its satisfaction like the pacifist! Would you do all that tedious grinding and brutal boss fights just to hear your so-called āpartnerā lecture you again on perverted sentimentality and say you should choose another path, even though thereās nothing that they could offer? Of course not. In the end, youāre just like poor Tantalus agonizing in the pits of Tartarus, feeling the water vanish from his hands just before it touches his lips.
The ultimate triumph of Chara isnāt making you suffer a total defeat, but perhaps something much worse to you as a gamer: a pyrrhic victory. Itās like having a Twinkie that's been drained of the creamy center. Everything is still there except the thing you treasure most. Youāre damned to play a challenge forever deprived of any and all fulfillment you once got from it, a satisfying journey that will always be doomed to reach a dissatisfying destination.
In the end, Chara leaves you with the world exactly as they described it the first time they met you face-to-face: POINTLESS.
You can have the world exactly as it was before (and the people within it). But in the end, Chara will always have the last laugh.
Figuratively and literally.
Welcome to hell!
Part 4: Why Consequences Matter
Woooooo!!! Man, that was quite the read, wasnāt it? And yeah, I wasn't kidding when I said this is going to be autistic as all hell! I donāt doubt you have a lot of thoughts in your mind, and then youāre gonna share them by the time youāre finished reading this post. Some of you might think this is the Chara theory to end Chara theories. Some of you believe that this is the worst thing that has happened to this fandom since Sebastian Wolff. Some of yāall, Iām whitewashing them because I argue theyāre driven by a desire to punish the wicked by any means necessary. Some will think Iām demonizing them because I say that theyāre, well, a demon.Ā
[SIDE NOTE: Just so I donāt miscommunicate what I believe about Charaās morality, here are some key points to take away from this theory. A) Chara sought to make you pay for the evil you committed. In fact, the idea that the Soulless Ending is Chara punishing our sins has been around for a while, especially by those who think Chara was ācorrupted. B) However, in this theory, Chara's actions are all done with the intent of accomplishing that goal. This means that Chara was aware of what they were doing, they wanted to do it, and that THEY KNEW IT WAS EVIL. C) But you still have to remember that Chara is also A LITERAL CHILD. And D) Theyāre a child who endured a great deal of hardship (and possibly trauma), which made them so embittered and vengeful. Also, E) Remember that theyāre also soulless, just like Asriel when he was Flowey.]
But I think most of you were gonna look at this interpretation of Chara and feel the same thing that I have about most of yours: a take thatās not without issues, but not without a fair bit of interesting points.
But regardless of what you think of this theory overall, thereās one thing I wonāt leave up for debate: I deeply treasure Charaās character. Not just because I think theyāre fun, cool, or interesting but also because I firmly believe theyāre invaluable Undertale. And yet, at the same time, I think theyāre severely undervalued by the fandom. And who can blame them?
The characters of Undertale speak very little of Chara, and Chara speaks for themselves even less. But just like Johan Liebert from the anime Monster, even though theyāre not seen too often, they still manage to exert a massive presence and impact within Undertaleās narrative. And that presence is made all the more impactful because they perfectly represent the themes of the narrative: and that theme is CONSEQUENCES, or more accurately, the CONSEQUENCES OF VIOLENCE.
From the violence that drove Chara to climb Mt Ebott to the violence their brother Asriel inflicted in hopes of being with them forever. From something as grand as a war between two civilizations to something as small as dismembering a snowman. Everywhere you look, you will see that violence (and its repercussions) haunts the story and characters of Undertale. But what makes Undertale stand out from other media that tackles this subject is that itās not just an integral part of its narrative but also its metanarrative. The most ingenious way it does this is by giving meaning to the actions/mechanics that we take for granted, specifically monster encounters.
Our Lord and Saviour Toby Fox said it best:
Because the monsters of Undetale are treated as something more than just enemies to be killed, there are going to be consequences for choosing to kill them away. Some argue that it goes too far in how it admonishes you for killing even a single monster, even to the point of being preachy (Iām looking at you, ScottFalco, but thatās a response for another day).
That argument is deeply flawed because it fails to account for the fact that without these ramifications, the gameās themes would be rendered null and void. The last thing that a game with a narrative centred around the consequences of violence can afford to do is afford you the luxury of avoiding them. And that principle especially applies if you dare to choose nothing BUT violence. //////If you were to bring them all back as if nothing happened, then your decision to commit genocide would be completely meaningless, which would totally disservice Undertale themes regarding violence. There needs to be consequences. LASTING CONSEQUENCES. Undertale canāt drive home its messages and them without lasting consequences. Undertale canāt deliver those consequences without Chara in the driverās seat. And Charaās character can only be at their most narratively cohesive and thematically impactful if seeking to make us suffer consequences was their intended destination.
Regardless of whatever detail about Chara youāre discussing or what side of the discussion youāre on, one thing is very clear: theyāre absolutely essential to Undertale in the same way that Mephistopheles is essential to Faust, the Cenobites are essential to Hellraiser, and Kuybey is essential to Madoka Magica. And theyāre the only ones with the means, motives, and deep-seated misanthropy to hold this whole damn game together.
Sans is right. We deserve to be burning in hell for what we did to those poor monsters. And I can't think of anyone more qualified to have us humans āburning in hellā than a self-proclaimed demon with a seething hatred of humanity.
And how fitting is it that the skeleton who judges our sins is followed by a human child who punishes us for them?
BUT HEY, THAT'S JUST A THEORY!
A CHARA THEORY!
THANKS FOR READING!

Why I feel like Ka/taang is one-sided, despite textual evidenceĀ
ATLA does try to convince us that Katara has romantic feelings for Aang. For example: she seems thoughtful when she realizes that Aang is a powerful bender; sheās offended that he didnāt want to kiss her in the Cave of Two Lovers; she gets jealous when Sokka says On Ji and Aang look good together.
Soā¦whatās wrong with anti-Kataangers? Do we just lack media comprehension?Ā
To be clear, on their own, these gestures can indicate romantic interest. But at the same time, we have stuff like āAang is a sweet little guy, like Momo.ā We have her ambivalent facial expression after he kisses her before the eclipse, and her hedging during Ember Island Players, and her anger when he kisses her anyway. In the context of these conflicting cues, Kataraās possibly romantic reactions can absolutely be interpreted in a different way, because:Ā
Acknowledging a friend as a potential romantic interest is not the same as actually being romantically interested in them.Ā (Imo this is something young women struggle with, due to a combination of romance-centrism and heteronormativity that make women feel like theyĀ shouldĀ be in romantic relationships, and that boys and girls who share intimate and deep feelings for one another must be romantically into each other)Ā
Wanting someone to find you desirable is not the same as desiring that person.Ā (Which is something a lot of women, especially young women, struggle with. Remember all the discourse around Cat Person back in 2017?)Ā
Being jealous when someone flirts with your friend is not the same as wanting to be with your friend.Ā (Especially when you see your friends as family, or if youāre accustomed to a specific type of devotion from that friend. It is jealousy, and it is possessiveness, but it doesnāt always arise from romantic feelings)Ā
Growing up in a patriarchal society means that your desires are always filtered through what men want from you, sometimes in an abstract male gaze-y way, and sometimes in a very visceral and interpersonal way when a boy wantsĀ youĀ specifically. And Kataraās reactions are just that ā reactions. Reactions to what other people ā including Aunt Wu, Sokka, Aang himself ā have insinuated about her and Aang. Sheās not really proactive in her interest in Aang:Ā we donāt really see Aang, romantically, from Kataraās POV. Under the framework of āKatara is reacting to a romantic prospect sheās kind of uncertain about,ā it is completely plausible ā and indeed likely ā that she would sometimes act in ways that indicate romantic interest, in addition to moments where she indicates the opposite.Ā
Ka/taang shippers often bring up other evidence, like Kataraās despair when Azula hits Aang with lightning, or how protective she is of him when Zuko joins the Gaang. The thing is, these pieces of evidence arenāt necessarily indicative of romantic love. The fact that Katara genuinely loves Aang makes the whole thing more complicated, not less, because ā especially at that age, especially when Aang is twelve years old and grew up in a sex-segregated society of monks ā it is really difficult to tell the difference between platonic love and romantic love. Their mutual devotion is layered and complex yet straightforward in its sincerity. What was not straightforward, until the last five minutes of the show, is whether this devotion on Kataraās end is romantic. The romantic arc for Katara and Aang is not really an arc, as Sneezy discusses in thisĀ classic ZK video. Katara actually becomesĀ moreĀ conflicted over time and we never see an event that clarifies her feelings. She seems more interested in him in The Headband than on the Day of the Black Sun, and she has never been more hostile to his romantic overtures than in the penultimate episode.Ā
And in light of this, itās pretty easy for fans to fill in the blanks with a different interpretation: maybe Kataraās weird expression after their kiss at the invasion means she didnāt enjoy it; maybe the kiss made her realize that she doesnāt actually feel that way about Aang; maybe against her will and her better judgement, sheās developing feelings for another person, a person who hurt her and whom she fervently tried to hate until he pulled off what is in my opinionĀ the greatest grovel of all timeĀ in the form of a life-changing field trip.Ā Maybe.Ā Am I saying that Zutara has more romantic interactions than Ka/taang? Of course not. But ironically, the lack of romantic interactions means that itās not inherently one-sided, the way Ka/taang became in the latter half of season 3.
Iām not arguing that Kataraās unequivocally not into Aang. Obviously the text declares that she is, because they get married and have kids. But I am saying that thereās a very good reason that so many people, especially women, see Kataraās interest in Aang as ambiguous. Itās not because we canāt pick up āsubtleā hints of growing affection. Itās because we know not all affection is romantic, and itās really easy for someone elseās insistent romantic intentions to muddle what you want.
P.S. I first started thinking about these topics (platonic vs romantic love, desiring someone vs wanting to be desired, etc) in the context of compulsory heterosexuality, a term describing how queer women contort themselves into relationships with men even if theyāre not really into men.Ā I saw a postĀ a few days ago joking about why so many queer women seem to be into Zutara. I wonder if part of the reason is because as queer women, we are very sensitive to the ways in which we can talk ourselves into wanting things we donāt actually want, and Kataraās romantic interest in Aang can be easily seen that way.Ā
#Anti Kataang#Zutara#anti Bryke#Katara deserved better#From Bryke who offered her so little romantic agency#I actually think Aang and Kataraās mutual devotion is really compelling because the wires get crossed when you have such intense love#And navigating romantic vs platonic feelings can be very complicated and interesting#but no we did not get that bc I guess they just had to end with a romance however shoddily developed#my meta

Santae banned me without telling me why and won't unban me unless I send them my photo ID
Hey guys sorry for not posting inā¦ forever? I just suck at social media lol. But you may have seen that I've reblogged some posts that advertise Santae in the past, but please disregard all that. I've since deleted those posts after learning how the site is managed and, after what happened to me a few days ago, I feel as though I should go public about this. Because boy did I just get fucked over.
Anyway, yeah, what it says in the title. On October 24th, around 10am EST, I was restocking my user shop when the entire webpage went white. I couldn't access the site at all and, when I tried to look for the Discord on my server list, it wasn't there. I knew what this had meant. I got banned from both the game, and the Discord - this is important to keep in mind for later.
I didn't receive any Discord DM or email notification about my ban, so after asking a mod what their support email was (and yes, I later verified that this is indeed their legitimate support email), I sent them this:
After a few hours, I get this back in response:
There's so much I'm confused about here. I think the one that screams out the most is that they're asking me to show them my photo ID so I can get unbanned. Absolutely not. I refuse to do this. This poses a massive security and privacy risk. They straight up banned my account, gave this half-baked explanation, and told me I need to send my personal information or... I stay banned?
Let me make something clear: The only personal thing they have on file about this account is the email address that I created my account with, which I've also used to contact them. My real name, date of birth, anything of that nature would not be connected because this was not asked for during account creation, therefore this wouldn't actually prove I'm the account holder. Theoretically speaking, I could show them any ID in the world and for all they know, that's my real information, because they have nothing else to go off of. They even say as much in their privacy page.
Secondly, "account has been compromised"? What does that mean? I think anyone's interpretation of this would be that my account got hacked. But if my account got hacked, why wasn't I informed of this? I had to reach out to support, they did not reach out to me first. That means my password, which I may share across other sites, would have been known to someone else and thus I should've been warned of this immediately, not roughly 5 hours after the fact.
Thirdly, what, was my Discord "compromised" too? If an automated system had flagged my account, does that system somehow interact with a Discord bot so they ban a user on both at the same time? How does that work? That makes no sense as to why they'd ban me on both the game and the Discord for something like this, which is why I'm calling bullshit.
Let me tell you what I think happened.
Recently, Santae has been in some really hot water with connections revealing their relation to an older petsite, Lurapets, which has a history of scamming and artist mistreatment, as well as proof coming out of them using AI art for their NPC art. You can find these posts on the @santae-salt blog if you want to see for yourself, but I'm also linking them throughout this post.
Once the post about them being directly related to Lurapets was released, several users that the Santae staff thought might be involved in the creation of the post got banned. As it turns out, I was banned at the same time as these users.
After speaking with the @santae-salt admin, we are both of the belief that I, a regular user, got caught up in this mess because they're assuming I'm an alt account of someone else and staff demanded to see my ID because they didn't think I was a different person. It may turn out to be wrong, and yeah that sounds a bit far-fetched, sure, but really, what else can I go off of here?? Santae staff has given me a very questionable and refutable explanation as to why I've been banned, and their radio silence after I refused to send them my ID is just making me believe they don't think I'm real. They don't want my photo ID to verify I'm the account holder, they want my photo ID to verify I'm not someone else.
This is unprecedented. I've never seen any petsite ask for a photo ID in any situation, and after asking around, not even those banned from Santae were asked for this. It's just me! This is an incredible attempted breach of privacy, and, with Santae now under doxxing allegations, I really don't feel confident they'd keep my personal informationā¦ well, personal.
I messaged back almost immediately after they responded to me where I told them I would not send my ID and I had asked if there were any other way I could verify myself to get my account unbanned. I've received no response so far, and after what I've learned, I feel like I'm not going to get one at all.
So, let this be a lesson to you: don't waste your time on Santae. You can be the most obedient player out there. You can abide by all their rules, be a nice and generous player, or just be minding your own business, but if they so much as think you're associated with someone who they think has wronged them, you'll be banned.
And they can't even be bothered to properly tell you why.

"Transformers don't have sexualities. They aren't sexual beings they don't need to reproduce." Hey guys? There are suggestions of sexuality or sexual attraction among Transformers sprinkled across continuities and comics, usually contained in lines of dialogue. Whether these lines have actual meaning or not is completely up to the reader's interpretation.
"Well that line of dialogue was just a bit. It doesn't MEAN anything." That statement holds as much weight as me saying that it does.
If you interpret Transformers as being completely asexual, fuck yeah! If you interpret Transformers as being equipped to have sex, fuck yeah! Both of your interpretations, based on the info that we currently have about Cybertronians in general, are VALID.
I've noticed literal arguments break out over this shit throughout my time in the Transformers fandom. I've also been seeing people comment on how "horny" this fandom is "even though Cybertronians aren't sexual creatures." Like??? Bro maybe let people be horny without being salty about it and without trying to insert your personal interpretation as fact. That's YOUR interpretation and it's just as valid as my (horny) one is.
Let people write their smut. Let people draw and write Transformers fucking or not fucking. Because at the end of the day, no one can say for sure whether Transformers can or do actually fuck or get horned up because THERE'S A MILLION CONTINUITIES and each one seems to address that subject either differently or not at all.
At the end of this post, I want to once again reiterate that if you interpret the Transformers as completely incapable of sex or anything even remotely alluding to it: awesome. Go you!
And if you interpret them as being equipped and capable of sexual intercourse and sexual attraction: awesome. Go you!
But neither of your interpretations are the end-all-be-all, and if you feel the need to "correct" people on their interpretations, then you're just being a self important asshole.

šš”š š šš§š š°š¢šš” š šš”šššš«š š¤š¢š! š¬/šØ
šš®šš”šØš«'š¬ š§šØšš - i've had a few requests similar to this so here ya go !! as a performer i love this icl
DARREL CURTIS -Ā
Darry is incredibly supportive with your interests
If you need help rehearsing your lines, he will sit down with you once his brothers have gone to bed and read through themĀ
I love the idea that Darry can dance (totally not bc of dirty dancing) so if you need to go through a choreography, heās the person to help you
He loves it when you sing sm
If he hears you, he just smiles fondly and shakes his head but heāll never bring it up to you
Heāll try to go every single one of your shows/productionsĀ
If he canāt make it because of work, heāll make someone else go and will always be there to pick you up afterwardsĀ
SODAPOP CURTIS -Ā
Soda would adore the fact that youāre an actor/actress
He thinks itās so cool and he will brag about it to anyone who listens
Heāll try his hardest to help you memorise your lines, but he doesnāt have the patience to sit there and wait for you to go through an entire script
He loves it when you sing
Whether its in the kitchen, in the shower, in the car, you name it, he loves it
Yāall will do duets together in his car
Dancing together in the kitchen
Soda will go to all of your shows and will get front row tickets every timeĀ
Plus he cheers the loudest for you !!
PONYBOY CURTIS -Ā
I think Pony would be super interested if youāre an actor/actress
We all know how much he loves his movies and books, and I cant see him being any different when it comes to plays
Heāll help you will your lines, and heāll help you interpret different scenes (he just sees things differently)
When it comes to dancing howeverā¦ maybe he isnāt the best person to go to
Heāll sit and watch you practise for ages and will give feedback when needed
He loves that you can sing so much and will always give you little compliments about your voice
He always tells you that heāll be watching you at the drive-in, on the screen, one day
He might try and get involved in some of the high school productions, but only if youāre part of them
If not, heāll always be watching you from the crowd and heāll be super proud of you !!
JOHNNY CADE -Ā
Johnny is so incredibly supportive of you omg
He loves everything you do and thinks itās so cool
When it comes to helping you learn your lines, he is super patience and will prompt you when needed
He could sit for hours and just read your script without complaintĀ
He adores watching you dance
Unlike Soda, he wonāt join in ā heās more than happy to stay at a reasonable distant and cheer you on from afar
When it comes to your singing, he could just listen to you for ages and he encourages you to sing around him all the time
He finds it comforting in a way
He will come to your rehearsals if you want him to and he always feels so at ease watching you (anything to stop him going home ig)
At yours shows, he will always be somewhere in crowd, and will tend to drag Pony along with him
Heāll be watching you the entire time
DALLAS WINSTON -Ā
Dallas doesnāt see the appeal in theatre
Heās never really cared for shows and performances until he learnt about your interests
Just because you like, doesnāt mean heās going to change his views, but he might not be quite so harsh about it
He wonāt help you with your lines ā if he does, youāre probably better off practising alone anyway bc heāll purposefully try to mess you up
āItās all part of the acting process, babe. Trust me.ā (dont trust him)
He does however like to watch you dance
His eyes will be fixed on your the whole time and he thinks your so hotĀ
He is the type to get jealous if you have an on-stage love interest
Dally is not afraid to brag about you ā everyone knows that Dallas Winstonās partner is a performer. Its common knowledge
He will tease you for your singing, but he secretly thinks its crazy good
Heād never say that to you though
Now when your shows and performances roll around, he probably wouldnāt go to every single one
He might linger in the back for a bit, but heāll probably end up leaving during the interval and waiting outside for youĀ
He does support you though; he just doensāt see the appeal of āprancing around a stageā
STEVE RANDLE -Ā
Steve is your number 1 fan and I mean it
Heās crazy about the idea of you being a performer and will always be there to big you up and support you
Heāll try his best to help you with your lines. He might not be the greatest at it, but at least he tries
He shows you off to everyone and will chew peopleās ear off about you
āThatās cool, but did you know my partner is an actor/actressāĀ
He never shuts up
He will always try and dance with you, but this guy has to left feet
Your choreography ends up turning into a mess of twirls and loud laughter
Uses you as he personal jukeboxĀ
He loves it when you sing so much and will make song requests
Sometimes he joins in, but he never sounds very good bless him :(
Goes to every single one of your performances and shows
Always tries his best to get front row seats so he can cheer you onĀ
You will always see him grinning at you in the crowd like this boys is smiling so big when he sees you on stage
TWO-BIT MATHEWS -Ā
If you thought Steve was you biggest fanā¦ You were wrong
Two thinks youāre the best and he will say that
Youāre better than every other actor, singer, dancer heās ever heard of by a mile
If you two are watching a show or movie together, heāll lean over and whisper: āsure, theyāre greatā¦ but compared to you, theyāre nothinā, babe.āĀ
Heās actually suprisingly good when it comes to helping with your lines ā heās got that theatrical energy about him
LOVES your dancing and never hesitates to join in
Teach him the choreography please and he will practise with you
Probably got kicked out of your rehearsals for shouting praise at you LMAOĀ
Always compliments your singing like he loves it
Sometimes heāll put the radio on just to hear you sing
Two-bit always cheers the loudest at your shows like you know those really obnoxious people who clap loud and whistle? Yeah. Thats him.
At the end, heāll run over to you and spin you around, gushing about how great you were
He loves everything about you I swear

Ok, I just saw your redesign of Lucifer for the 2P AU you did and I honestly like it a bit better than in the show, he actually feels prideful here since purple is in fact the biblically accurate color of Pride! :D
Also making him a brunette and adding bright blues (a biblically accurate color of Sloth) as accents was a nice choice :) and the golden eyeshadow! :)
But does he still rule Hell in the AU with Alastor coming from Heaven? And what's the latter's role IN Heaven?
(Iām actually not very familiar with 2P lore if there really even is one but iāll try))
((i also havenāt rewatched the show since it literally came out i maybe have forgor about like many things LMFAO))
(this also got deleted like twice and iām pissed for rewriting this again)
(anyways hereās 2P Lucifer in my own interpretation)
2P Luci thrives in being alone, finding comfort and strength in it rather than misery. He doesnāt mind ruling Hell on his own. He doesnāt need anybody and doesnāt want anybody. His relationship with 2P Lilith has broken apart completely, due to their different views on redemption and the treatment of sinners. 2P Lilith is tricky since we know almost nothing of her, but i believe that she harbors a deep disdain for Hell and rejects the idea of controlling sinners for personal gain
BUUUUT something that has been in my mind recently is how he is essentially the embodiment of Pride.. but since 2P is (technically) the opposite of something (an inversion) The opposite of pride would be HUMILITY. Instead of making him a sad, insecure ruler, ..Iād like to think he thrives on humanās insecurities, fear, humiliation and self-doubt instead.. (rather than in the show he puts ON a prideful face when in reality heās quite timid and socially awkward))
His relationship with 2PAlastor is quite decent (2P radioapple šāāļø) they still bicker but not in a hateful way like they do in the show, lighthearted jokes and banter, reflecting a mutual respect. (Lucifer knows how sensitive 2P Al is, and despite flourishing in humans despair and emotions, He has a soft spot for 2P Al.) ..Oh and they do not try to win over Charlieās affection, ((2P Charlie actually does not really gaf about them XD))
Does not care for Heaven.. maybe even hates. but is not emotionally affected by his fall, I donāt know if Lucifer actually misses Heaven in the show, we can see how deeply affected he still is by their rejection of his creativity.
so i guess id like to think instead of him feeling hurt or betrayed(?), he feels somewhat thankful. Thankful that he was able to flourish in HIS ideas at last, finally seeing the evil of the world like he intended to.. destroying the order Heaven worked hard to maintain. Maybe he wanted Eve to bite the apple because he WANTED evil to come and corrupt the world, He knew what came with free will. He was a rebellious angel who went against Heaven in every way, intentionally with malice. Implying that Lucifer does not regret his role in giving sinners free will. He also cares for his sinners but not in a good way, more like he wants as many as possible so he could one day potentially top over heaven in power. A power hungry bastard.
He is serious, and a realist. NOT goofy and silly lmao. (Though he has goofy moments i shall not strip him of his whimsical fun entirely)
2P Lucifer and Original Lucifer share some similar qualities aswell. Something Both 2P Luce and Original Luce have in common is that they love Charlie.. and will protect her at all costs. Luci actually maintains a positive relationship with his daughter, He is close with her and tries to be in her life like a good father should, but 2P Charlie doesnāt usually give him the time of day. although she can be quite mean, and not the bubbly type at all like she is in the show, she still loves her father to a certain extent.
Again, we donāt really know much about the characters and the familyās history in the show.. And until we do, everything i said could be changed completely!! Like i said this is something for fun!! I havenāt really been thinking much about this AU, i designed him as a silly redraw but if i ever in the future add more details to his lore i will š«¶
Oh and as for the relationship with Original Alastor and 2P Luciā¦
Ok thatās all idk i donāt write for a reason ššš š
