he looks more unassuming in his setting than in general but oh man is he not, this man is weirrrrd like Weird weird, he met a guy on a cart who he knew was like a super evil ghost man and not only did he decide to ignore the fact that he was that super evil ghost man, he eventually ended up marrying him! who does that? also, he collects trash for a living! and out of him and his ghost husband he's arguably the weirder one! he's literally a god and he dresses like that (imagine that in italics) absolutely wild. also he's obsessed with swords and is on good terms with the guy who stabbed him and trapped him in a coffin for 100 years but he draws the line at his annoying cousin (who does do really bad stuff as a ghost but he disliked him before that). overall he's just, wow.

Why Should Your OC Win?

Mallory. A dream demon with powers very reminiscent of Bill Cipher. His name supposedly meaning “unlucky” or “unfortunate”, he’s one guy who gets the taste of his own medicine.

I won’t bore with excessive details (you may have read his original info post from Round 1!), but he goes through a few stages. Class bully, angsty teen and then adult, worshipped/leader adult, and then house crasher. He develops an affinity for ham because of a simple question asking what he likes in his omelet. In one universe he develops a fear of blonde women with their hair in ponytails due to this nightmare (he takes dreams VERY seriously).

Most recently I’ve been messing around with his house crasher era. You may see a certain man named Castor Dent later, who is the owner of this house and ends up Mallory’s lover in this stage. I can’t speak about him in full since he’s not my OC, but Castor is great.

One universe he’s adopted a kid (and is a disorganized mess), in another he’s in his high school years figuring out his sexuality… then getting thrown into an arranged fight with a man so pretty he finds out his bisexuality right then and there.

Never let him behind the wheel, either. You will not make it to your destination by any means.

Anyways, that’s my ham-loving bisexual disaster for you.

Note!!!: If you’re wondering why sometimes he’s got his horns + tail, sometimes he has his burnt arm, sometimes he’s in a robe, and all that.. Well he’s got a few different stages/universes. His horns also come out, rising from his skull and his tail extends from his back. They pop out when he’s either feeling cocky/proud or he’s feeling strong emotions. His burnt arm forms from a deal he takes at a later stage in his life.

What is Your OC Like?

A dream demon, think Bill Cipher. A ham lover and an attention-loving blorbo. He can mess around with dreams, visiting them and altering them if he's up for it. He started off his life in Hell but eventually escapes to Earth through a bit of a shady deal (that results in his arm getting burnt up. Fun times!). From there, he gathers a bit of a following, with people of every gender seeking to know about this "dream demon" who sports these tall horns and a demon tail. Eventually, he ends up banished from the place he was living at, due to growing concern about his following growing so rapidly, so he wanders until he finds residence at another man's house. He becomes a house crasher, simply feasting off any food within the fridge and sporting a specific fondness for cubed ham. Just pops it into his mouth by the handfuls. Mallory is the most horrific cook, usually ending up with him covered in food and something burnt. He also takes dreams very seriously, so if he has a dream where a blonde woman with a ponytail might hurt him, he fears all blonde women with a ponytail for a while. He's rather dramatic and emotional, used to all the love and attention from his following and seeking it once again with the man housing him.

Ulyana is the personification of a fish out of water. Released on prison furlough in a foreign country, their basic knowledge of life is: 0. She can barely figure out how to turn on a washing machine, cook anything aside from a quiche, or sit in a chair properly. They have a Moomin shrine in their closet. She is scared of anime. Everything normal that she attempts to do turns out to be an absolute failure. Having never learned basic life skills aside from how to knock someone out cold, they're doing... the best they can, really. At least she has her wife, who she married in Vegas after getting very tipsy.

Also, my friends say she's really pretty, so we love to see pretty women!! She literally has one of the roughest backstories that I've written, so she deserves a win for once.

Ulyana, after years of being used as a political pawn throughout her childhood, is finally free to live her life! Needless to say, they aren't very good at it. It's tough to learn the basics of life at 24, but hey! No one said they couldn't try. Stern, tactical, yet sweet, and often very anxious, she's found her home living in an old house with three other roommates, not including the one who broke into the attic. They spend most of their days in college classes, or working overtime on weekends in the most boring grocery store ever.

Don't be fooled by her anxiousness and awkwardness, though. Years of military training has made her very capable of kicking anyone's butt. Stay on her good side, and you won't find out what it feels like to be swept off your feet and have three inch heels on your face. You're safe when you find a metal detector. She's probably got at least 50 knives on her at all times (they stole all of them. Just because they are on furlough DOES NOT mean they still aren't committing crimes!! She does crimes for fun!!)

My Interpretation of Trevor!!

My interpretation of Trevor is a weird amalgamation of the game, manga, and anime. And sometimes I have multiple interpretations of him depending. But the one that I have a design for is a solid mix of all. He likes photography and wants to complete the pokedex. Gets really excited seeing Pokémon even if its a Pokémon he's already seen before and yet is very shy when meeting new people. He's only really comfortable with his friends, his sister, and Sycamore (who is effectively his father figure). Very smart but kind of clumsy, he tends to get a little beat up because he focuses in on things and forgets his surroundings. He's not big on battling but he loves studying Pokémon and want's to be a professor when he's older just like Sycamore. He takes photos of pokemon and keeps them in a little scrapbook with help from Shauna. Also he thrifts all his clothes and can never find anything that fits him just right.

Canon Trevor HCs

I tend to have sadder head canons for him due to the lack of parents. I don't think he likes Celebrating his birthday because his parents are never there to celebrate it with him. He has a hard time making friends and is always silently worried his friends will leave him one day. He's scared of getting hurt and so he tends to shut himself off from others involuntarily because he's scared of being abandoned again, and most of the time he only meets new people through the others in his friend group. Sycamore is one of the few adults he trusts.

Because of the manga I like to think he has this sixth sense of snuffing out harmful or dangerous people based on their aura. Lysander makes this kid faint his vibes are so bad. But that's really just for fun rather than anything serious or concrete.

I think he's got a wet paper bag for a stomach and gets queasy very easily. Its possible his anxiety has something to contribute to his health. and he should probably be on some kind of medication to manage it.

I love love love how hes handled in the manga. He's not the coward he thinks he is. He's scared but he's willing to fight for what he believes in. He's willing to stand up for his friends even when he struggles to stand up for himself and its so nice watching him grow.

AUS!!

I have a few aus major with Trevor PLA and REVIVAL are my two major ones but there's also Paldea (a spin off following PLA) and Wondar (My fan region that features him minorly)

Despite both major ones having godly deer screwing him over in one way or another I characterized him differently

In PLA is emotionally dead. He's got no fucks left to give and handles Pokémon with his bare hands. He's exhausted and numb. I don't think I've talk a lot about him and his relationships in PLA but he practically adopted by Laventon, and ends up making good friends with Akari and Rei. When he does return home he finds himself missing them a lot. Also he never wants to see another shinx in his life hes got scars for days from shinx alone. Also theres a Yanmask with a mask of him implying he died before returning home. (Paradoxical nonsense but its meant to represent the part of him that lived in paldea and not the part of him that died if that makes any sense? its like the physical manifestation of the impact he had on the past).

In the Revival au (sometimes lovingly called Revival Rival cause its fun to say) he's physically dead. He's practically a walking corpse with a conscious. His heart barely beats, his skin is cold. A medical anomaly. Xerneas splinters a piece of its power off (so to speak) to bring him back because humans are far more complicated than foliage. Because of this he can understand Pokémon, Flowers grow in his wake, and can revive fainted Pokémon. It seems neat but to him it just further alienates him from his peers and is a responsibility he doesn't want to have to handle. Its overwhelming. He can't stray too far from Xerneas who's is practically his life support. I've jokingly compared it to a soul gem from Madoka where if he strays to far he slows down and then eventually loses consciousness/dies again. Theres a grace radius but he can't really explore places like Lumiose anymore because Xerneas can't/won't follow. Meaning he can't go home. He lingers around smaller towns and forest. When emotinally distressed he loses his ability to control these new powers.

Character opinion bingo: Nezuko and/or Alder!

I'm gonna do both honestly because blorbos go brrrrrrr

So first: nezuko!

Honestly I think that Nezuko's character is a really interesting study in consent and autonomy, and the morality thereof. Because let's face it: her baser demon instincts are telling her to eat people. But the person she was before that would never eat people. And so she's conflicted with the desire to kill versus protect, and Tanjirou is also conflicted as he has to come face to face with the fact that a demon who's tasted human flesh is beyond salvation.

Before getting turned into a demon, Nezuko was just a kind big sister who took care of her family, who was content with that simple lifestyle. And we didn't see much of her, but now she's this unhinged, bloodthirsty creature who has in many ways reverted back to the mind of a child.

But Tanjirou is kind, and he has already lost so much. And he doesn't want to lose her too. And she doesn't want to lose him! And so they make sacrifices. Nezuko chooses to trust him, trust that her brother will take care of her, and sleeps unless she's fighting alongside him. Her mind is hibernating to keep the hunger for blood at bay. And Tanjirou swears to find a solution, to find a cure for her.

I just really like, overall, that Nezuko is portrayed as damaged by the incident but her life has value nonetheless. All lives have value, and Tanjirou doesn't enjoy killing! There's no glory in it. Just...tragedy. But Nezuko's not gonna end up like that.

On a metaphorical level, I think you could read Nezuko's behavior in her demon form as similar to trauma or brain damage-- she lashes out sometimes and needs a high level of support, but she's still a person and she loves and she deserves a choice.

Next: Alder

I just think this man is a weird dad/grandpa who ends up adopting every kid he runs into. I'm ignoring the anime and looking directly at the manga and pokemas content, particularly the conversations he had with N.

He just reads like a very soft older dude who honestly isn't sure how he got this position. And he cares deeply about pokemon-- so deeply that he's still torn up over the loss of one from a while back. I also think that he's of Hisuian descent, and has heard adventure stories about those days-- he's got a couple heirloom pictures of his ancestors, scarred and worn down from fighting a hostile world.

He doesn't ever want to go back to those days. He wants to wake up late in the morning, get a frankly absurd quantity of breakfast burritos, and drape himself over the couch with his pokemon. He wants to have battles with hopeful and eager kids for a living, giving them advice, hoping that one day he can see them rise to the top. This man has been places. He's known loss and grief, but he's also known joy, and he wants to share that. His ideal day starts with sleeping in and lazing about the house, and includes several picnics in the grass, and at least one play-wrestling session with his pokemon. Sometimes he jokes that he was born in the wrong era, and he'd love to be a hunter-gatherer telling stories around a fire and cuddling the homies. he has an oil painting kit lying around his closet that he never managed to open up despite wanting to learn for a while, but he'd enjoy bob ross.

I also think he kissed one of his friends on a dare when he was a teenager and hasn't thought about it in decades, but one of these days he's gonna get vibe checked with the memory and have a bisexual crisis.

I think (and this is just me, as a white person who has been trying to break out of this mindset, speculating based on my experiences, so feel free to chime in and correct me) some of why it’s hard to get people to adopt black blorbos is because to many white writers just starting out it almost feels… disrespectful?

Not to say they’re exactly the same, but because this is my wheelhouse, I’ve noticed the attitudes that keep people from adopting black blorbos share similarities to the barriers that keep people from writing women and people of color in whump.

Writing women being tortured and beat up makes many people viscerally uncomfortable in a way that beating up men (especially white men) doesn’t. It feels to many like it’s reinforcing “damsel in distress” stereotypes, and/or some women writers find it “too close to home” to their own experiences of violent misogyny. And because of real-life problems like police brutality and other forms of racist violence, making your whumpee not white seems… fraught, to many writers as well. Especially amateur white writers who aren’t confident in their abilities to handle anything outside of their own experience “sensitively” because all of their writing is going to be kind of clumsy at first.

Because whump is ultimately about catharsis, and I think everyone deserves stories about sympathetically suffering and working through pain, I personally try to write a wide variety of types of whumpees, men, women, white, black, etc. Just writing about white men over and over and over again doesn’t suddenly become progressive, just because the genre is angsty and violent. But I get why people default to it. When an anxious writer already feels at risk of being called a psycho by non-whump fans, they certainly don’t want detractors to add “racist” or “sexist” to the list.

Similarly, even if whump isn’t your jam, blorbo-ifying a character kinda feels like beating them up or at least humiliating them. You might want to put them through The Horrors. They might be your babygirl or your poor little meow meow. You want them to have exploitable characters flaws and make messy decisions. If you’re a fan of fluff, you might want to make them act all syrupy and wrap them in a blanket and give them cuddles and hot soup. If kink is your thing, you might want them to be tied up and degraded. Across fandom we tend to kind of… infantilize and torment characters we like. And due to the real life struggles people of color face, and doubly so if no one else in one’s immediate fandom circle is doing it, this kind of behavior just… feels odd to do as a white person to a non-white character.

Of course, similar to how making female characters always the “mom friend” or the “caretaker” or “the one with the braincell” isn’t actually helping break sexist stereotypes, and it would be better to write women with the full breadth of emotion and experiences as male characters get, including the “sad wet cat” variety of women that fiction severely lacks, refusing to blorbo-ify black characters or any other non-white race isn’t helping the fandom landscape get more diverse, either. If people feel like they can’t follow their usual patterns, because that would be “disrespectful”, then they’re going to default back to always writing white guys because they’re far less likely to receive any kind of flack for writing white guys doing silly, iddy, pathetic, painful, embarrassing, weird things.

As for why we don’t handle trashy beach reads featuring characters of color well, either, I think it’s the same problem, basically. There’s some kind of pedestalization going on. White characters can be trashy or goofy or self-indulgent or badly written, but characters of color have to be “good rep” and “teach readers a lesson” or else it makes a lot of white readers really uncomfortable.

It kinda reminds me of how when female leads of books were more rare back in the early 00s, everyone hemmed and hawed about how they had to be “good role models”. It was super annoying back then, and really limited the kinds of female characters that got published for a while. And when it’s applied to characters of color, this “good role model” mindset is equally detrimental. Representation is important. But we don’t need them all to be “good role models”. We need more characters of all walks of life with agency, interiority and flaws.

What can we do about this? I don’t know. I’m far from perfect, and still trying to unlearn a lot of dumb racist things myself. I also can’t control other people’s brains and I wouldn’t want to. And I don’t want anyone to feel forced to write or read something they don’t care for simply to meet a diversity quota. That isn’t how we’re going to get good stories either.

I think the best thing I can think of to do is just continue to try and push our comfort zones out a little farther. Listen to diverse voices. Write more of what we want to see, including more racial diversity in our favorite genres. And be receptive to good-faith feedback if we screw up.

All the griping about #ownvoices claiming to represent diversity but really just forcing minority authors to write very particular ideas of what a "minority experience" is that please what publishers and "progressive" readers of majority groups want to see.... makes me feel like that movie American Fiction can't come out soon enough. I mean idk how much penetration that will have with the YA and genre publishing industries but. It floored me when I realized the novel it was based on was like 20 years old.... it just shows how while we might have a different publishing-industry label for it, black authors feeling like their books get ignored if they don't write for a particular (racist, tbh) fantasy of what the "black experience" looks like is an evergreen problem.

I know someone who's a tv writer, and they're always calling her up and using the word 'urban'. She's a dork. She should be writing for Gus from Psych or just any old show, not whatever it is they think she's going to be good at.

The real sticking point for a lot of white readers isn't a heavy book about issues: it's connecting with a trashy beach read about a Mary Sue who happens to be black. Or, for those of us who read trash m/m, asking us to have a black man as our single perfect tear woobie of choice.

I don't know why this is so hard for us. (I mean, racism, duh, but specifically why? It's all very well to blame the R word, but there are a million flavors, and unraveling stupidass underlying assumptions and bad behavior requires grasping what's going on more precisely.) I suppose it's a lifetime of training about otherness and who's allowed to be fragile and perceiving every single instance where the fairytale princess doesn't match our hair and eye color exactly—yes, even if she's white—as a demand that we never have personal wish fulfillment fantasies again. The atrociousness of a lot of media doesn't help, particularly for fanfic, but that's not the whole of it. A lot of people act like you ran over their cat if you ask them to identify with a sensitive, vulnerable black character in iddy trash fun.
