Evil grows in the dark and heroes bloom in the light
This idea feels more of an AU than a possibility of this happening in the SCU but it is fun to write/draw nonetheless.
This idea is inspired by the Sonic Fleetway comics, tangled, and Lion King 2: Simba’s Pride.
(I made this before I knew if Jim Carry was returning as Eggman in any future installment, just to let you know)
After the events of the third movie, Eggman is defeated once again this time at the cost of his life. Agent Stone is devastated at the loss of HIS doctor and wants vengeance against Sonic and his friends. Unfortunately, he would have to bide his time and lay low until the heat died down. With the ultimate weapon loss, he scavenges G.U.N base one last time in search of anything from Eggman or the government to use against Sonic in the future.
During the search, Stone discovers a brown hedgehog in a cryo-chamber similar to the one Shadow was found in. After looking into some files, he learns the subject, Project Rose seems to be a failed attempt at re-creating a more docile version of Project Shadow (to control better) years after Shadow was deemed too dangerous. At first, Stone was appalled by the idea of using another alien mutant to progress his plans for revenge, it hadn’t worked out the last two times! Not having a lot of options he took his chance with this creature, deciding that he would play his cards carefully this time and dispose of the beast as soon as possible if necessary.
Months later, Agent Stone, discovered like Shadow she has a connection to chaos energy, though a lot weaker and more unstable. Similar to when his doctor wielded the master emerald power, she can create anything from the material she’s offered. She also has supernatural strength, enhanced athletic/acrobatic, an unexplainable sixth sense, and cloaking abilities.
The only downside is that her powers are more limited compared to Shadow or Sonic and even seem to put a lot of strain on her body. He predicts that her body will expire in a matter of months or a year at best. Not that he cared as long as he got his revenge on Sonic, she would be one less problem to deal with once he was done, anyway.
Since Agent Stone doesn’t have the vast intelligence of his beloved doctor he settles with using Amy to create complex machinery. By night he causes trouble for Sonic heroes making sure they never forget the doctor (the team doesn’t know Agent Stone is the one causing trouble). By day he brings back material and blueprints he managed to scavenge during his nightly ventures.
Each day, Rose would create machinery, and weapons, unbeknownst to her that aided him in his conquest to destroy the blue pest and his friends. Unfortunately, for him, despite having many of the doctor's glorious blueprints and plans at hand, none have come close to destroying his foes.
Rose could easily see Mr. Stone’s frustration whenever he returned from his “night job”. Wanting to cheer her guardian up, she decided to sneak out and gather some material to make Mr. Stone happy. Rose, never having been outside, is quickly enamored by the luscious forest and flowers. So much so that she didn’t notice a blue blue until he was right on top of her.
Stone had relocated his base Of operation from the coffee shop to the depth of the forest of Greenhills. so it was a matter of time before Rose was at the “wrong” place at the “wrong” time resulting in her encountering the blue blur.
After untangling themselves they get a good look at each other and both are shocked. Sonic was in shock due to meeting another hedgehog who had hauntingly familiar eyes, leaving him gawking at the girl like an idiot. While Rose is shocked to meet another creature like herself but with such beautiful quills. Rose is quick to excitedly shoot questions out to the shell-shocked hedgehog. Before Rose could get a response from the blue hedgehog she sensed Agent Stone returning to the base so cut the meeting short. She quickly grabbed one of the daisies she dropped early and suggested they meet here again sometime to get to know each other better. Again before Sonic can respond the hedgehog girl disappears before his eyes (literally).
Upon returning to the base Rose decides to keep her meeting with the mysterious blue hedgehog secret for now, not wanting to get in trouble for sneaking out. She didn’t think a two-petal daisy would cheer up Mr. Stone or make up for running off. Things progress like usual with Mr. Stone, bringing in material and blueprints of bots to practice her creation ability. The session goes on like any other until Rose’s mind can’t help but wander back to the blue hedgehog. And unbeknownst to her it influences her powers to create the head of a metallic blue hedgehog instead of a plain android like the blueprint. Noticing her mistake, Rose quickly tries to apologize and explain herself though Stone calmly brushes it off. Stone smiles at Rose for the first time in a while (if ever) and tells her that she is on to something and this may be her best work yet. So before Rose could exhaust herself for today, he excused her from their session for today and sent Rose to her room.
Behind closed doors, Agent Stone was a bit furious that the insolent creature had shown its first sign of disobedience and interacted with the blue menace nonetheless! But that didn’t matter for now her day would be numbered soon enough. Now he had the perfect plan to destroy that hedgehog in the best way possible thanks to his little rose. He would build that robot in that blue rat likeness, using any information gathered from Rose and Sonic’s meetings ( assuming the ungrateful girl will sneak off to see the blue rat again). Then when the sonic bond with the rose reaches its highest, Stone would tear it away from him(just as Sonic did to him) using Sonic's image. Then his friends and family before lastly the blue hedgehog who would most likely be more than broken when Stone strikes the final blow.
Unfortunately for Stone, his plans don’t go exactly as planned. With each meeting, Sonic and Rose's bond grows stronger, and Rose learns and grows. Through Sonic she learns what real healthy love (familial, platonic, and romantic) looks like which eventually helps her realize something up with Mr. Stone. Sadly by the time she comes to this conclusion, Stone has initiated his plans leaving Sonic to believe that she betrayed him. Wanting to right this wrong Rose lends her aid to team Sonic to defeat the metal monster of her creation. With the chaos emeralds and Rose's help, they were able to defeat Metal Sonic and Agent Stone, but at the cost of Rose's life. The battle she had put herself through, pushed her body to the limit, exhausting all the chaos energy that was meant to keep her alive and stable. Devastated sonic kneels down to his rose, holding her close begging, her to wake up. Stone takes satisfaction in the fact that despite his failure he had given Sonic a taste of how he felt when he took his doctor away.
As Agent Stone is taken in by the G.U.N agents Sonic pays them no mind as he desperately tries to offer up as much chaos energy to Rose’s body in hopes of reviving her. It seemingly has some effect on the hedgehog girl as her quills go from brown to pink and when her eyes eventually open they are a bolder green compared to his own.
Bonus context:
Agent Stone is the type of man who would take satisfaction in a loss if it means, he leaves his enemy physically or mentally scarred. (in the IDW pre-quill comic. He was pretty intimidating so I wanted to go the extra step). he doesn’t care about ruling the world like Eggman (nothing matters if Eggman can’t be the one on top in the end). He just wants to hurt Sonic and his friends/family as much as he can.
In the beginning, Sonic keeps his meeting between him and Rose secret for selfish reasons. Sonic loved his brothers but sometimes he wanted some things or someone to himself (sonic still adjusting to sharing with his brothers). After the ordeal with Shadow, sonic also wanted some semblance of peace or escapism from the trauma. It isn’t until Sonic starts to notice that Rose’s home life might not be so great that Sonic starts to get his brothers and parents involved. Because of this sonic still feels guilty that he could’ve done something sooner.
After watching Disney’s Tangled with the Wachowskis, Amy teasingly calls Sonic her Rapunzel while Sonic insists that it’s the other way around.
Agent Stone is basically mother Gothel to Rose, so she has experienced a lot of gaslighting and guilt-tripping from Stone.
Rose takes up the name Amy as her first name a few months after she leaves Stone's custody. Despite her name coming from a dark place (Project Rose) she wants to keep it while adding something new to it representing the start of her new life as Amy Rose.
Sonic thinks Amy looks beautiful before and after her transformation.
After spending some time at the Wackowski‘s recovering, Amy takes off on her own leaving a note to Sonic explaining how she is going to explore the world for herself and promising that they’ll meet again. Sonic is a bit sad at first but lightens up in the hopes of meeting her again.
If Shadow is still alive and crosses paths with Amy, he would consider her his little sister and do anything to protect her after learning about her connection to him.
Agent Stone would be on Shadow’s kill list after finding out what that man put his sister through.
Shadow would probably gatekeep Amy from Sonic.

DC Universe Scripting Ideas
Safety
You are very good at one-on-one and physical hand combat and don't take full reliability on your power/s or anyone else's.
You never find yourself lost or off-track when it comes to certain missions nor are you forced or expected to go on solo missions.
None of the evil leagues or villains can track you or your team, and you always have a clear advantage when fighting against one.
Neither you or your team members are targeted or subject to endangerment, nor do villains take sadistic interest in you.
Paparazzi are never a danger to you. They never find themselves in your buisness and they respect both your privacy and your boundaries. You are never caught up in fan battles or rivalry.
Your ability drawbacks are never severe to the point of injury or ability fatigue. On that note, you can never lose control over your power and don't have any fatal weaknesses (such as Superman with kryptonite or if you have any cyborg attachments, water)
You recharge as you move. You never feel tired for long nor do you lose your stamina quickly if at all. If you want it to be realistic and don't want to accidentally send yourself into burnout when training, your stamina isn't lost during dangerous situations or fighting.
Damage isn't severe when fighting in public vicinities and can easily / quickly be rebuilt and paid for within wage.
You are not prone to manipulation or mind control such as Trigon trying to get inside your head, and you never feel tempted to use your ability for evil or harm.
You have a sustainable and efficient mental and physical support system and you have a dependable therapist. Don't shift to DC if you can't recognize that you will need emotional help after certain situations.
General
You never fall into debt with anyone — financially, or emotionally
Your hero name is well known and you never regret the name you chose.
Members of your teams or even your overall co-workers / friends who are usually known for their spitefulness are kinder to you. (Raven, Jason, John, et cetera.)
You can easily comprehend and communicate in Starfire's language.
You have multiple hero suits that are clean when you have to use them. They cannot tear and they never become stuffy or claustrophobic.
Cities, especially Gotham, don't smell fatal. Alternatively you can handle the odor that comes with visiting or living in it.
Ability Ideas
Photonic Constructs — The ability to create solid constructs out of light. These constructs can be used for offense, defense, or utility, like creating temporary shields or bridges of light.
Cartography — The ability to sense and navigate through ley lines and energy pathways in the world. This can lead to hidden places, portals, or ancient sites.
Aetheric Vision — The ability to see and perceive supernatural or hidden energies, including magical auras, psychic impressions, and other invisible entities.
Quantum Duplication — The ability to create temporary duplicates of oneself at different points in time and allowing the user to collaborate with past or future selves.
Elemental Fusion — The ability to combine different elemental powers, such as fire and water, to create new effects (for example, steam for obscuring vision or magma for offensive power).
Auditory Manipulation — The ability to create auditory illusions by manipulating sound waves, causing opponents to hear things that aren’t there or masking sounds for stealth. This can be actively introduced into other music-based abilities.
P.S. — I don't know much about DC so forgive me if these traits aren't very specific. I tried to do research on the main points to see if I could narrow them down a bit. I also wasn't sure what base you wanted me to cover, whether Titans, Gotham, Justice League et cetera, so I tried to cover all of them.

The Seer
Seer, called fio’sheal in the ancient fae language, are mortals with special abilities. Aiden is one of them.
Origin
The Seer ability is something you are born with, not something you can learn. It gets passed down in the family, but it is inconsistent.
With that I mean that sometimes the ability skips generations and that not all children of a Seer will inherit it.
No one can quite tell where Seer come from or why some people are born as Seer and some aren’t.
There is however the theory that those born with the ability are descendants of the ancient folk that was exiled to the human world and mixed with the locals. Others say that only mortals whose descendants were blessed by fae get the ability.
What is true, no one can quite tell.
Ability
The main ability of Seers is that they pretty much have true sight, meaning they have an eye for things hidden from other mortals.
They can see what is supposed to be invisible to the people living in the human realm, can see supernatural creatures and occurrences where other people can’t.
To some extent they can even see through magic spells like glamour. If a Seer is strong enough, they can see things not even visible to the fae.
But Seer can also have other gifts. Each Seer is different, so not every one of them has the other gifts or has them in the same intensity. The way those gifts show themselves can differ, too.
One of those gifts is the ability to receive visions (though some might consider it more of a nuisance). A Seer can get visions of past, present and/or future.
Those can come to them randomly, by touching people or things or in dreams. They can reveal to them warnings, prophecies or other important (or not so important) information that the Seer can pass on to other people.
Some Seer also have psychic-like talents and are able to communicate with worlds beyond other humans’ reach. Or they can see (and sometimes interact with) certain magic and/or energies. There's a variety of forms Seer abilities can take, each as individual as the Seer themselves.
The might of their power also differs, there's powerful and less powerful Seer.
Soul animals
Seer are tied to the magical realm. They are special in that way because, unlike both fae and humans, they are tied to all three of the existing realms.
Each Seer has their soul animal, an animal that represents them as a person. These animals are born in the exact moment as their Seer and are sort of a "personification" (for a lack of better words) of the Seer's soul, their tie to the magic realm come to live.
In a sense, you can say the soul animal is a Seer's other form that is connected to them all their life, similar to elementals and their mother plant. They are a mirror of the Seer, their loyal companion and personal guide and protector.
Occurrence
Nowadays, Seer (especially powerful ones) are rarer than they used to be. Back in the times when the realms were still closer, they were more common, but over the decades and with the humankind's withdrawal from the old world, their numbers have contracted.
Seer are always mortals. Humans and half-fae can be born with the ability, fae and wishlings can't. If a Seer has fae-blood running through their veins, it usually strengthens their power.
Seer and the people
-> Humans
Like I mentioned before, nowadays, Seer are rarer. They don't get much attention from their society anymore, often living among other people undetected. Most cover up their ability, only very few Seer openly admit to their powers.
A Seer's ability can't always be hidden, it needs good training or some form of suppressant to be covered up. Sometimes, Seer aren't aware of their powers. That, too, can make it easier for them to go unnoticed.
However, there are, unfortunately, some cases where an undiscovered ability either harms a person's reputation or, in the worst case, their sanity. Luckily, this is a rare occurrence.
Back in the days we're Seer we're more common and more people remembered the old ways, Seer were often highly regarded people with a good reputation. They were considered wise and helpful people that you can seek out for advice.
In some villages following the old ways, they were often leader and advisors. Sometimes, people even saw them as something akin to saints.
Still, even back then, there were people who didn't trust them. Who were scared of the power the Seer held. And so Seer were also met with dislike and distrust. Sometimes from individual people, sometimes from a whole village. There was a time (especially once the new religion came) where there were even hunts for them.
So, as one can see, the relationship from Seer to their fellow mortals differs wildly depending on the circumstances. Nowadays, they don't really have a relationship to them at all anymore. Like fae, to most people Seer are now simply old stories.
-> Fae
The Fae value Seer a lot. They believe their powers are a blessing of the goddesses and therefore admire them quite a lot.
They like to take their services. Back when Seer were less rare and more of them found their way into their realm, the fae always warmly welcomed them.
The fair fae often let them work as their advisors and oracles. They respected their opinions a lot and always treated them respectfully.
Wild fae have their own kind of Seer and therefore didn't need the mortal Seer's help, but Seer were still welcomed and well respected guests that they trusted more than other mortals.
Nowadays, a Seer showing their face in the realm the fae inhabit is rare, but that doesn’t mean that they don't still are well-disposed towards them.
The Seer of my story
-> Aiden
Aiden is a pretty mighty Seer, but he is unaware of it and also mostly untrained. His parents kept his ability from him, so he didn't know about it until he learned it at some point in the story and unlocks his full potential.
He gets Seer lessons by a ghost and uses his newly released powers to find the sword. Aiden has the power of vision, though those visions are mostly from the past and only come to him as dreams. He also has another hidden ability. His soul animal is his crow, Kara.
-> Kian
Kian is Aiden's (ghostly) mentor. He was one of the very first Seer and was cast out by his village as a kid because his ability scared them. Kian is the most famous and apparently also the most powerful Seer to ever have lived. After his banishment he went to the magic realm, where he was raised by fae druids and grew up to work for no one less than the Alderking and his siblings. He helped hiding the king's regalia after his fall.
His power of vision is really strong. Its focus lies on visions of the future. Unlike Aiden, Kian's visions came over him while awake. He also has other abilities, one of them being that he has a strong connection to the afterlife. Even after his death, he is able to communicate through the realm of dreams, if the circumstances are right. That's how he calls to Aiden. His soul animal is a white deer.

Once he had finished that sentence – as stiff as it appeared to him –, Takeru leaned back into his chair and stretched out his arms. He had been trying to get into a habit of daily writing his novel for a while now, but today, the words simply didn’t want to flow.
After yawning loudly into the silence of his room, he let his eyes roam around. Patamon was already fast asleep, dreaming of chocolate frappuccinos on his bed as the clock on his laptop taunted him with how late it already was.
“Almost midnight…”, he mumbled to himself. The chat window had gone silent an hour and so, without much distraction, he didn’t even have an excuse for the lack of creativity that had been haunting him all night. Unfortunately, he didn’t feel like sleeping either, so the urge to just go and text the others to see if anyone was still awake was incredibly tempting…
Takeru was pretty sure that Koushirou was still up, as always. Maybe Iori was up late studying. Hikari was having a week off from kindergarten duty, so he might be lucky in trying to reach her. Maybe his brother, who currently resided in the United States for an internship, was not busy for once and could text him back?
“I shouldn’t though…”, he groaned, knowing he had to be responsible. In sheer desperation, he opened the Chosen Children app on his laptop to take a look around the map and chat options, hoping to find any news he could occupy himself with, regardless of where in the world somebody was texting. It was a shame that gate hopping wasn’t a thing anymore since the Digivices had vanished almost three years ago – and they still hadn’t figured out how to make it work with Koushirou’s technology. Still, Takeru liked checking on the app, just like he liked checking the general group chat. It was giving him a sense of serenity to see everyone interact casually, just when everything finally seemed mostly peaceful.
… Which was his last thought before he caught the glimpse of lightning striking outside from the corner of his eye.
“Woah!”
There had been a loud noise – somewhere not too far away from his apartment complex, so he had naturally jumped up from his chair.
“Wha- Takeru?”, Patamon shrieked, woken up by the rumbling as Takeru rushed to his open window. It had been a warm Summer day in the middle of July, but there was a chilliness right now that sent a shiver down his spine. His eyes sought through the night sky, trying to locate any kind of strange occurrence – and apparently, he wasn’t alone in his assumption that something about this lightning had not been ‘natural’.
“I can feel something…”, Patamon murmured, still half asleep, but alert enough to fly next to his human partner onto the window sill to join his efforts to look around.
“What do you mean? It wasn’t a digital gate, was it?”, Takeru asked, heart racing, both with worry – and excitement. Not that he had wished for a nightly Digimon attack disturbing the peace they had worked so hard to achieve. But a part of him really missed the supernatural experiences they used to encounter on a daily basis.
“I’m not sure… Something like an energy spike…? And doesn’t it look more foggy to you?”
Takeru squinted his eyes. “Yeah, it does…” Never had he missed the responsive beeping of his Digivice more than in this moment. Either way, whether or not there really was a Digimon involved, he felt validated in sending a warning into the group chat after all.
‘Just witnessed a lightning strike near my flat. Did any of you see anything? Patamon says there was an ‘energy spike’?! Will check out if there’s anything dangerous out there. I’ll keep you guys updated!’
“We should go and see if anything happened. You ready?”
“Aaaaawwwwlways!”, Patamon agreed with a yawn in between and Takeru quickly grabbed his phone. It was still odd to be able to trigger an evolution just with the “power of his belief” facilitated by the phone. But with Angemon by his side, he was confident that they’d be able to face any threat out there. And maybe gather some more writing inspiration in the process…

Lore explained of the undermutts both for myself to remember and for new comers! Not gonna spoil what happens next
things that inspired this story:
Chicago musical, Epic the musical, helluva boss/haszbin hotel, Arcane and The Boys
The undermutts is a story about my oc’s, whom are which are criminals back in the 1930s who were put on death row for their crimes.
note: in this world everyone had a special ability they’re born with, most are very minor. While fewer have powers that make them higher in the food chain, naturally they become criminals and some rule over cities together. They’re called doomsers (originally called tazzers)
they work as dons, crime lords and kingpins. There’s at least two in every city, very territorial.
the doomsers in the city are:
Koda: the don the undermutts are currently forced to work for since they caused trouble in his territory of the city with their crimes, his power is he can warm his skin up to lava temperature and start fires with his finger tips thanks to that
he’s insanely strong, and mostly uses brute force when fighting.
Lucky: the greedy don that owns all the clubs in the city and only allows one casino to be open and that’s his own, scamming people out of their money and forcing them to pay off their debt to him. His power is he’s incredibly lucky and things go his way supernaturally, weakness, black cats.
telek: is a small child yet still had their own territory, had a short fuse and with their family wealth and strong power at a young age they climbed the ranks. Their screams can cause earthquakes and blow peoples heads, accidentally killed their parents when born.
Curse: owns the shadiest side of town, has an alliance with Lucky and he lets her attend or sing at his clubs since she loves the music. She helps him in return with her powers, seeing the future. Or the most possible outcomes for every choose that can be made, a real girls girl.
harlor: has the power to make projections that they can see though, can even make the dreams, memories or fears of people come to life of they wished. People fear what they can do to them with their power rather then how they can kill them, use trauma against others
Main characters powers:
One: keen sense of smell, hearing, sight, and taste. That like a dog, can track anyone if he has an item of theirs.
Two: can phase through living matter and reappear while inside, making it cave in.
Three: can make things she touches explode, the bigger the object the bigger the explosion along with how much energy she puts into it. Can only do small amounts
Four: can sew things together and can bring them to life/heal them if he has parts to placed the damaged ones
right before they were killed they were approached with a mysterious contract that’d pardon their crimes and free them. Which made them sign it.
though, they still got put on deathrow and died.
20 years later (now the 50s) did a lab run by one of the cities most powerful men did they bring one of the criminals back, his name is number One.
number one is a clone and was ‘born’ and raised in the lab, his purpose was to work under the powerful man and kill anyone who gives him trouble.
One has no memory of his old life, he only knows is that he’s a clone of a old criminal and he must serve the powerful man in order to be free.
when One is in his later thirties and going on missions by himself they made the next clone without the need to raise them from infantry.
the second clone, number Two, was outstanding from the get go and a favourite around the lab. Immediately he was partner up with One even though it took One years to be allowed on a mission. Making One resent Two.
a few years later the third clone was made, though she’s small she has quick hands and is able to pickpocket and build weapons quickly, her name is number Three.
shes the trouble maker of the team but was often neglected from being included since one and two were always butting heads.
one year later, the latest clone was made. Number Four. A giant man who had almost inhuman strength, he was the muscle and helped Three hide remaining evidence of their missions. The two are close friends.
the clones can’t run away from their duties to the powerful man, nor die either. When they die they ‘respawn’ at a machine in their base, inspired by TF2.
together they are called the Mutts, and they are all missing an eye each.
One lost his eye during his childhood in the lab, an experiment to see if he could regenerate gone bad. He got drilled in the eye and during his struggle the devil scraped down his face
Two lost his eye when despite having no memory of his past life or family he tracked them down even if it’s been years and they were much older. His adult daughter and older wife were horrified to see him, upsetting him and killing them. His daughter stabbed him using a glass shard before dying. His eye didn’t grow back due to it hurting him emotionally too.
Three lost her eye by having acid thrown onto it by an enemy when she went on a mission alone whole one and two were fighting. The acid was too radioactive and messed with her regenerative abilities
four lost his eye when a grenade was thrown at him, blowing half his face off. He was able to heal himself thanks to an ability he has, having stitches all over his face.

The midnight revelation was the first major lead we had on Jiaola's location, but it was still just that: midnight. Meloai didn't need to sleep, but Lucet had been practicing cold spells relentlessly, and Sansen was an old man who'd hiked through a supernatural blizzard while maintaining a permanent spell of futuresight. As much as I wanted to burst into the storm and save Jiaola myself, we were in no shape to go haring off into the wilderness just yet.
But I sure as hell couldn't sleep, so I decided to try and bleed off my nervous energy by honing my magic. I wasn't going to be able to mess with my friends' emotions for the sake of getting more attunements while they were sleeping, and besides, I'd run through pretty much every attunement that I thought I could get myself without being a massive dick to the people I cared about most. Giving Lucet a friendly prank-scare or sparking a little joy in Meloai's eyes was one thing—intentionally betraying Sansen's trust or snuffing out someone's sense of wonder was a step beyond what I felt I was willing to do in order to touch one more school of magic. And those were the tamer of the attunements I could try to grab for myself. I'd already picked all the low-hanging fruits when it came to attunement.
That being said, although my obsession with piling up attunements had paid off already with saving Mertri's soul, it was far from the only way that I could improve myself. Every spell I practiced, every memory I summoned into my soulspace, every demon I created and trained was another tool in my arsenal for the next time Iola or Mr. Ganrey or Odin showed up to ruin everyone's day.
And besides... there was a very real possibility that I could do some good for the fallen while I trained my magic. So I told Meloai to keep an eye out and quietly slipped into the storm.
The blizzard had buried the once-fertile plains, swallowing everything from the tiniest of gnats to the light of day itself. Somehow, it almost felt fitting that even the sun would fade before the apocalyptic hailstorm. After all, what went better together than the cold and the dark?
Well. Necromancers and the dead, for one. Idly, I wondered if in some other life I would've answered something cutesy and trite like "peanut butter and jelly," or "puppies and cuddles," or "governments and corruption." Perhaps that other version of me wouldn't be shivering in sub-zero weather, a repulsion spell keeping the hail from caving in my skull, scouring the fields of the dead for souls that I could still knit back together.
Or perhaps that other version of me would have died long ago. Who knew. Not me, for sure; I wasn't an oracle. Maybe I'd ask Sansen to look into some alternate futures for the fun of it, when we were safely away from the center of a battlefield and everyone we loved was safe.
The blizzard may have been blinding to the mundane eye, but my soulsight had grown by leaps and bounds in the past few weeks, and I could see the constant puffs of death drifting up from the ground. There was where a family of mice starved to death, their sparkling souls shattering like raindrops on earth. Then was when a soldier had frozen, succumbing to the supernatural frost, a few glittering motes of fading souldust marking where he'd passed.
I stepped up to the body, closing their eyes with one hand. I wasn't here for the bodies, although I guessed that if there was anyone left to claim the fallen soldier as kin, I would happily reunite the two. As in, I'd bring the claimant to their slain family, not send them to the afterlife together. Man, people had held weird prejudices against necromancers for so long that even my subconscious felt the need to clarify. But the point was, the bodies of the dead weren't why I'd come out here.
I'd come here for the souls.
It was a feat of concentration maintaining the spell keeping the hail away while I worked another piece of magic: I had to simultaneously manage the bile of disgust pouring into the repulsion spell while digging out a shard of sorrow from my soul, slicing open a tiny rift between planes. The emotions I used to fuel my magic were rarely pleasant, and this was no exception.
But it would be worth it.
A sliver of the dead soldier's soul slipped from thoughtspace to realspace, and I concentrated, drawing it closer to me with the memory of a pair of tweezers. The sliver was barely enough to contain more than a moment of the soldier's life, but as the soul shard melded with my mind, a flash of memory shot through me—
"Leave me behind," I gasped, falling to the ground. "Get to the camp. It'll be faster without a wounded soldier weighing you down."
—and I swallowed heavily, taking in a deep, quavering breath.
Other necromancers might have tried to raise an army with the raw corpses left behind. But I was the greatest necromancer still alive beneath this unceasing storm.
I wasn't here to enslave the bodies of the dead.
I was here to remember their stories.
The greatest necromancers always were historians, after all. Any two-bit thug could raise a freshly-fallen corpse, but if you wanted to summon an army of souls bound to skeletons, there was no better way than unearthing a hidden mass grave from a war two centuries ago. I was a historian, too. Trying to catch the sparks of souls before they faded into thoughtspace.
I stood, narrowing my eyes, and plucked the memory back out from my soul. It was an art that I was still getting used to—anyone who would have taught me further soul manipulation was either as in the dark as I was, a mortal enemy, or dead—but with the help of a tweezer of soulstuff, I held the memory so that it barely skimmed the surface of my soul, still as fresh and perfect as the moment I'd absorbed it. The tracks the soldier's companions had left shone bright in my memory, even if they'd long since been swallowed by the snow, and I followed them like a dog on a hunt. Not that there were any living dogs within a hundred miles.
"Getting warmer," I muttered to myself. "Warmer... warmer... hot."
The memory ended abruptly, but it was enough of a lead that I could pick up the finer details. I was no tracker, but one of the soldier's companions must have been a fairly competent mage of freedom—now that I knew what to look for, I could see the telltale signs from here on out of where the path had been blown free of snow. I reached the end of the trail, hope rising. Maybe... maybe, for once in this fucking endless torment of chronicling the dead, I could actually save someone for once. I would dearly love nothing more than my power over death being utterly, completely useless.
"Warmer," I said, pacing towards what I dimly recognized as a snow cave—
And stopped dead.
Because my soulsight pierced all barriers as mundane as physical objects, and I could see very, very clearly that there were no living souls in the shelter.
Just the leftover fragments of shattered souls.
Despite my layers of thick mountain clothing, I suddenly felt very, very cold.
I trudged forwards, blowing aside the front wall of the shelter with a swipe of my hand and a pulse of disgust, to confirm with my eyes what my soul already knew. Two more soldiers laid dead, embracing each other beneath the snow.
Once more, I pressed against the skin of reality and made a single, incisive cut. The soul fragment that came through was disjointed, a mangled whisper, but still I made sense of the broken memory, disentangling it into a single sentence:
We died warm.
I fell still, standing beside the two frozen bodies, and some cold, calculating part of me wondered if a distant observer would be able to tell which of us were the dead and which of us were the living.
Then, mutely, I turned around to return to my shelter. It was time to put today's expedition to an end.
I was getting colder, after all.

X-Files IWTB: First Time React (Part I)
I needed to watch I Want to Believe for a Christmas present project; and, going into the movie, I knew it would be bad.
I didn't know it would be "broken within ten minutes before Mulder and Scully even get into the helicopter" bad.
On the positive side, I'm enjoying David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson's acting; and they're doing the best they can with the scripts, so A+ for effort!

Yep.
But never fear! I shall have an absolute blast demolishing all the aspects that don’t make sense and enjoying the parts that deserve praise or kudos. :DDD
My Position Going Into This
When it comes to any art form, I stand absolute on the position that, yes, if it was created to be art, it is art; but art can also be critiqued on its merits or demerits. Otherwise, we all wouldn’t acknowledge what makes one piece of art masterful compared to another piece.
For movies, I focus on writing: does this plot point make sense in the context of generalized or specific circumstances; or, more specifically, do the actions of X person fit into their pre-established character or break it entirely without providing a reasonable motive? Pointing out the flaws of x/y/z character or moment doesn’t ruin my enjoyment-- every movie, tv show, book, etc. has them-- unless the flaw is noticeably glaring; in which case, what can I do about that?
In conclusion: this will be very snarky, but I mean no hate towards CC or anyone who helped create this movie. I have criticisms, justly; but I separate art from the artist always, and judge both on completely different scales and metrics. Any and all snark is exaggerated for comedic purposes... or that's my story and I'm sticking with it. ;)))
And now, onto the reaction~
Live Reaction
The movie’s gorgeous, I’ll give it that: tone, atmosphere, lighting, etc., all spectacular.
For a split second I wished that the man running past the woman victim had been a supernatural creature of some sort-- more X-Files in tone; and would eliminate the Father Joe character completely.
Dakota Whitney (not given her name yet, think it's her) seems in-tune with Father Joe’s strangeness-- another shame, because her character was squandered on a love triangle.
I will say, though, the spectacle seems… a little repetitive already? “Let him go, let him go” repeated three times with three different cuts.
Hmmm, I think this is the thought: compared to FTF, this movie seems like its plot is paper-thin, relying on spectacle or repetitive dialogue (or inane plotpoints? we’ll see) to keep it chugging along.
Scully is here!
After comparing her intro to the Pilot and Fight the Future and the previous five minutes, it seems… bland? The spectacle is gone, but that's not the problem. Everything is medical jargon as she’s giving an account of her patient to an overhead on a screen. The problem is-- and why I mentioned her previous introductions-- when a main character is introduced, their first scene establishes core aspects of their personality. Now would be a good time to get a thumb on how Scully has changed as she's navigated life on the run and in this hospital... instead, we're given nothing, really, just a medical spiel with no point other than to set up that she has a patient who needs experimental treatment. Nothing that is personal to her as an individual, other than she's more muted, downtrodden, etc. It's a very rushed and criminally underutilized scene.
I understand what CC and Spotnitz are going for: defanged Scully, hands tied and trying to keep her head down and live low-profile. Pouring her exhausted energy into trying to do some good, at least for the boy (since she can’t for Mulder.) It sets her up as frazzled and frustrated; and it makes sense why she pitches the FBI’s offer to Mulder when given the chance.
FBI agent just bounces in and disrupts her talk with her patient… that’s a plot point, definitely--
Wait, Scully kept referring to Mulder as Fox Mulder… which, yes, she’s parroting the man’s words back exactly to him but also Scully only ever referred to him as “Mulder”, “my partner”, “Agent Mulder”; and didn’t mention him by name otherwise. This is a nitpick, I know.
Also, from the interviews I’ve read, Gillian Anderson (and David Duchovny) struggled to get back into character in 2008 as well as the Revival (link here.) GA also notes (link here) that she agrees with Scully's characterization: "How she is in this film follows perfectly with where we last saw her and who she has always been." And, if lumping IWTB together with S9, I agree; and, interestingly, it's an aspect of Scully that GA seems to retain in the Revival (I think): saddened, withdrawn, only sparing animation when directly talking to Mulder. It makes sense after the William arc; but it’s sad to think about, regardless.
THAT’S THE FENCE?????
I THOUGHT IT WAS A TINY WOODEN FENCE THAT COULD BE HOPPED OVER.
…That makes a lot of sense, actually. I definitely can see Mulder rigging it up with all the time he had to spare (because, I mean, look at it: rusty, rinky, weirdly tied to the poles.)
I will say: I give Chris Carter props here because that man had a vision and he executed it: atmosphere, ~vibes~, and the kitchen sink. It’s why I maintain he was the ideas man and Frank Spotnitz was his refiner.
WAIT. Is that… is that orange juice on the table? (They remembered Mulder’s orange juice but forgot to iron out the plot. The irony. If this were an indie film, I’d find it endearing and charming. …But it’s not.)
Okay, intro to Mulder now.
Immediately we are shown the nest he’s built, with Samantha taking center-stage on his door. THAT’S how you do an intro; and, to the credit of the people behind the camera, it strikes a descriptive balance between Scully’s dispirited silence and his animated clutter.
OKAY. Mulder’s “What’s up, Doc?” was worth it. (Don’t you just love when creators behind really cool, innovative series make alternate universe stories in their own universe? The “what if”s? The “glad this didn’t happen but it’s not all that bad, yet” one-offs with big budgets behind them? Visionaries, I tell ya.)
Mulder’s going off on a tangent and Scully’s back in her element and I would be content if the movie skipped from here to the almost end with Skinner and Scully finding him and we (meaning me) the audience wondering “WAIT, WHAT HAPPENED” and then there’s the vacation and it ends.
Also, pertinent to stop here and reflect on the first Big Issue of the film:
Mulder and Scully have been living in this house for five years-- as confirmed by the cut lines in IWTB’s script (link here, thank you @dunhamhairograpy)-- which means they were on the run only one year before settling back in Virginia. To satisfy my suspicions, I looked up (on Wikipedia) criminals on the FBI’s wanted list between 2000 to 2003 to see how many years each person evaded capture (if they were ever caught.) In summary, those who were on the run more than a year most likely fled the country and at the very least did not settle back in the state they originally fled; and those who remained locked on American soil were caught within a few weeks to (maximum) a year (three years was the most, I believe. Longer or still at large dipped into other countries, at least temporarily.) The script also confirms that Mulder and Scully are aware that Skinner is aiding and abetting them behind the scenes; and since the agent who interrupted Scully at her hospital immediately cut to the chase-- with the implication that Scully knew where to find her partner-- the FBI likely knew how to find Mulder easily and just… let him be.
Despite the absolute dumpster fire of S9’s mytharc, we are led to assume that, somehow, Skinner and Doggett and Reyes stamped out the interest of alien-men-in-government and every other enemy that wanted Mulder's head and they all… proceeded as normal? Or Doggett and Reyes didn’t but Skinner did somehow…?
BUT THAT DOESN’T MATTER, LOOK AT THIS SHINY MOVIE AND THE PRETTY GOATMAN.
Also, yes, the beard needs work. However, I just remembered that beard oil is a thing but also that hair oil is a thing; and the idea that men might be taking better care of their beards than I do my own locks makes me wanna give them a thumbs up. (…But not Mulder: the texture on his face makes me want to cringe backward from the epidermis to the dermis to the subcutaneous layer of my skin.)
Mulder “who believes that anymore” was a great line for his first facial introduction (not bothering with technical phrases, gotta keep chuggin’); and his reaction at Scully’s snarky “they do at the FBI, apparently” and both of them being like “uhuh, they wouldn’t listen to you/us years ago” was a great nanosecond of screentime and I want more.
Mulder's walking wonky with a feverish passion behind his eyes; and I recognize that insanity from the fervor of spending too many hours indoors and online with nothing else to do but brood.
ALSO, he and Scully both make complete sense here and I cosign this scene.
(...Yeah, I know, we’ll get to those ones later.)
Scully getting around Mulder’s mood and straight to his interest and then igniting his sarcastic “oh” within a sentence or two is masterfully them and yep, I cosign.
Mulder choking on the “I am just as happy having them out of mine” denial stuck in his throat…. also: yes, Scully has a point about the FBI as discussed above but WHY do they want him out of their hair?? There were more people who had death wishes against him than there could be people in positions of power that support him; and with no CSM or Consortium hand-holding their superstar through trials and tribulations because he could “expose” them… again, whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy.
Mulder’s being really petulant and I love it but also he’s being too petulant but in a good way, in a sarcastic “at the end of my rope and I’m only barely being polite” One Son way.
Scully's honest “I worry about you” is touching, that’s nice.
I just realized: y’know how DD wrote The Unnatural because he wanted to hear Mulder and Scully talk like normal people, not just regurgitate the plot points back to each other with flowery, long-winded expressions (which are great, don’t get me wrong)? Welp, they sound more… human? natural? broken in? here; and I like that aspect.
Mulder looking at Samantha’s pic and knowing he can’t not help an innocent was a perfect character moment: great writing, thumbs up. (Reminiscent of his prior pattern of reluctantly helping people he disliked or was annoyed by-- Max Fenig in Fallen Angel, Krycek in Sleepless, Skinner in Zero Sum, Crump in Drive, Doggett in Alone, etc.)
He accepts the FBI’s offer; and Scully’s relieved; and I advise you to keep that in mind for later.
The Big Problems Set In
Whether Mulder and Scully called and told the FBI where to pick them up or the FBI sent a helicopter out, unprompted, as a power move is unimportant in the minutiae but incredibly crippling in the larger narrative: it flew TO Mulder’s house to pick him up. There is no way Mulder is undercover or in hiding any longer; and that means, at this point, Mulder is committed. The end, full stop, point blank, period.
The movie is broken and it's only 10 minutes in. From here on out, it will try to claim that Mulder is losing Scully by running further into the darkness; but the reality is, he has no other choice because there is nowhere else to run to regain his freedom AND to not put Scully at cross ends (or in danger) with the FBI.
He CANNOT back out: if Mulder withdraws from this deal with the FBI, he has to leave his home, go on the run again, and risk more aggressive recapture and imprisonment and probably broker another deal to escape full penalty at. a. minimum.
It would be insane for him to back out at any point in the future. He knows it, the FBI knows it, and more importantly SCULLY knows it: she’s the cautious one in this relationship; and she would have weighed the pros and cons before telling Mulder the FBI's offer. Yes, she tends to react without thinking at times-- asking Mulder for his IVF donation without long-term plans, for example, (link here)-- but something as precious as her partner’s life, the only person she sacrificed everything for, would be carefully guarded and protected.
Surely, she wouldn’t want him to back out at any point; especially because she has constantly suspected their own allies in the FBI all the years they’d been there, even Skinner, over and over and over. There would be no inducement or reason for her to trust the FBI to let Mulder stop on his whim (or hers, or theirs); and it’s a good thing she doesn’t do that. …Right?
NOW: would it be in her character to want him to stop? Absolutely-- that’s who she is. But to place him in an impossible position then demand something even more impossible on top of it, after Mulder’s hands are effectively tied until the case is solved? That’s what’s character breaking for her. We’ll get to that.
What’s going to be even more frustrating is that Scully will ultimately break their partnership (or start to) because of jealousy over another woman... for script reasons. (Don’t believe me? I don't blame you. But we'll get to it in a future part.) And that’s the show’s greatest flaw: the writers enjoy playing “are they, aren’t they” with Mulder’s driven passion and Scully’s jealousy and wish to be his priority. What’s worse is he prioritizes her more than any other human on the planet, even in this movie; and, at this point, Scully knows and has made peace with how Mulder is (all things.) To sacrifice their growth and trust in each other because of illogical reasons... we’ll get to that.
“Past is the past” says Dakota Whitney. That might be enough for Mulder in the long run but it certainly won’t be for Scully. …RIGHT?
Monica name recycle which is a staple and yet not a Monica Reyes who could have had pull to have Mulder and Scully pulled in on the case… oh, well.
Yes, Mulder has precedent to write off psychic phenomenon evidence when given to him by his enemies-- he’s petty that way-- but can you imagine how annoyed he was when it came out the psychic was a religious guy? A former Father? An issue that used to pit he and Scully against each other? (I see what you did there, writers.)
So: we have religious angle to separate Mulder and Scully in this movie. Also, we have jealousy over Dakota Whitney-- this movie’s nicer variant of Diana Fowley and Detective White and Phoebe Green: a gal who wants Mulder and writes Scully out of the picture despite very obvious rumors and even more obvious clues in the present-- to drive a further wedge (will be discussed next time.) What else could go wrong?
What I do like is that this movie sets up Mulder’s priority list that aligns with his previous character iteration: he wants to chase monsters, but not at the expense of people; and, further, when he doesn’t want to chase monsters, he still will for the sake of others' lives.
Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy Chris, did you have to make Father Joe a pedophile?
Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyy. I understand, I do, that it’s about people who want to redeem themselves, who are afraid of the monsters within, who are burdened with a greater purpose, BUT NONE OF THE PEDO STUFF HAS TO DO WITH THE PLOT.
For instance: Roland’s autism directly correlated with the X-File of his case, Marty’s blindness with hers, as well as all the other men and monsters with supernatural powers or inhibitions. Having a random and prominent flaw that doesn’t contribute to anything in the movie is, quite honestly, a waste of precious run-time; and is another example of the movie’s paper-thin story structure that it tosses around willy-nilly.
Tune’s catchy, though.
Okay, the movie’s editing is weird again. We’ve already “seen” Father Joe in the beginning; so repeating Mulder’s introduction style (angling towards everything but the man’s face) is noticeably repetitive and out of place.
Scully going for the man’s throat is a great set up for her and Mulder’s banter but
issssssssssssssssssss out of place, especially considering they need information out of the man and don’t know how he’ll react to fierce, off-topic interrogation. Yes, harming children is a no-no for Scully, and harming them especially in the name of her faith is a BIGGER no-no; however, she was never this tactless before, not even with John Lee Roche. Further, she stipulates this is Mulder's case, which means she jeopardized his interrogation with her sniping. Not only was it out-of-character, but it could have put an end to the only lead Mulder had to help out the FBI. Her professionalism is rusty, and further, she is sacrificing the high ground for a dig at the man’s ethics. It’s not very Scully, is it?
“Maybe it’s not God doing the sending” so this was personal, Scully, that dig had nothing to do with the case except for your own want to defend your beliefs against this pedophile. You’ve never done this in the past; and you and Mulder have worked past any insecurities you might have had with regards to your faith. So, THIS means you’re insecure. Maybe those years on the road have you overthinking or rethinking; but, regardless. it’s rolling back the character growth you achieved in all things and needed to be handled with defter care.
If the writers were trying to establish her as a bloodhound in this movie ala her old self, they can’t start it out with her being listless and downtrodden and suddenly break that in ways that would harm Mulder’s (and her) investigation and then shove her back into listlessness... and then repeat that cycle over and over with no rhyme or reason.
Also, Whitney is being established as the woman who looks to Mulder, always, because she has a big, fat crush on him that the writers will exploit for maximum drama.
FATHER JOE SENDS SCULLY OUT-- why. Negative energy didn’t inhibit psychic ability in previous cases. If Father Joe's so wimpy that someone watching him with disdain while he does his whammo makes him insecure and unable to… I was gonna say perform, remembered his altar boys, and cringed internally. Anyway, then he needs to be reminded who's in charge here.
The dialogue cracks are beginning to show: Scully’s parting line is cringe. Even though it doesn’t sound natural to say-- that’s never stopped The X-Files before-- what makes it egregious is that there is no connective tissue to her statement. When talking, there is a leadup to a point and a comment that follows it, etc. etc. Scully’s statement-- “Maybe what you see is a way to try to make people forget what you really are”-- is responding to nothing; and is randomly stated. The equivalent of the teacher telling Timmy to go sit in the corner and Timmy randomly yelling "You're not my mom!" before doing so. It achieved nothing; and made her look like a five year old that can't grasp the finer points of communication (because she only reiterated what everyone else in the room already knew.) Also, it sets up Scully as a disbeliever to Mulder and Whitney as believers; and, of course, this puts Scully through a hackneyed journey back to belief even though she doesn’t disbelieve in psychic ability any longer, etc. etc.
The question becomes: if this is a new pattern in her behavior, it will remain consistent. Another problem, too, remains. We (the audience) are not given a good reason why this rational character is behaving outside of her own interests. Scully has training and years of experience that being on the run for a year and in medicine for four? is not going to erase. It’s setting her up to be sloppy and messy with her decision-making skills; and we are given no reason why Scully is this way now; and, further, why she directly contradicts this new pattern in other scenes.
Scully getting scared by Mulder on the pedo colony balcony is a scene I didn’t know existed and I like and he was a reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaal snot for doing that and yay, it’s Mulder.
And also, I have another nitpick: Mulder, although he has backed off and let Scully handle her own issues with sexist cops and the like in the past, would never let a crook dictate the terms of where Scully is supposed to be: Scully would decide to walk out when she didn’t believe a word their suspect was saying, not because she was expected to leave. Mulder didn’t advocate for her here, put his foot down, or even blaze up and insist Father Joe stop playing games. Strike one against Mulder's characterization.
JUST AFTER I MADE THOSE POINTS Scully admits she was wrong and Mulder immediately defers to her. Which… uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, time to break that down.
This doesn’t seem like a lot; but that tiny detail completely demolished Father Joe’s introductory scene AND Mulder and Scully’s first scene back in the FBI saddle.
“All I had were questions-- you challenged him.” That’s a very Mulder thing to say… in other circumstances, but not in this one. Here, Mulder shouldn’t have “just had questions” especially because he was bugged that the other FBI people were a little too doe-eyed about Father Joe; and that annoyance would have made him act out on the priest. Furthermore, Scully’s fury against criminals IS something he loves about her BUT was out of place here, too. And all of this is negated because Scully left, anyway, and he didn’t stick up for her. It’s like if Scully and he were middle schoolers and their classmates kicked her out of a group discussion only for him to wander over after it's done and say, “you did great back there, sweetie!” without sticking his neck out for her at all. It smacks of spinelessness, the opposite of Fox Mulder.
Great acting by DD and GA; but terrible, terrible scenario.
The precedent has been set that Scully will lash out, get shunned to an outer circle, and Mulder will ho-hum, let it happen, get his info, and give her a pat on the head later. That’s never been them; and this pattern is immediately broken by a following contradictory scene. This back-and-forth cycle continues, over and over, flip-flopping Mulder and Scully in and out of character, and further damaging the script with one-off, disconnected responses.
Also, aren’t Mulder and Scully past this unnecessary drama of poking the bear (an old, Irish? pedo priest) before they get their necessary information? ESPECIALLY NOW WHEN MULDER'S FREEDOM IS ON THE LINE.
Scully finding out Mulder is humoring Father Joe and deciding to leave the situation and beat them all to the car NOW is in-character; but--
wait. WAIT. NO, I WAS WRONG. SCULLY’S JUST LEAVING LEAVING??? WHAT.
Okay, another essay time-- wow, I’m not even 20 minutes into this movie, HOW-- before we keep going: Scully leaving, now, because she doesn’t want to humor Father Joe has never stopped her in the past. Ten seconds ago she and Mulder were bantering, five seconds ago she bantered as she left, one cut later she’s somber and serious and dour and down and Mulder has to chase after her. WHAT HAPPENED IN A MILLISECOND to change her entire attitude, especially since she doesn't have a new piece of information to react to?????
In order:
Sees Father Joe is being humored (tilts head back in her normal, almost-amused, incredulous style):
Makes a bantery “It’s been fuuuuuuuuuun” remark and an upbeat “no thanks” remark:
Walks off (which is dangerous to her partner, will talk about that in the below paragraph) with a bantery “anyway, he doesn’t want me here” handwave:
Mulder is amused (but knows he has to go convince her):
MILLISECOND LATER with no new info or reaction “This isn’t my life anymore, Mulder”:
SO, we’re supposed to assume Scully wanted to hand Mulder over to the FBI from the start, sit back, and just let him run willy nilly around with them without her being there; and only came along because he asked her to come but still bailed on him when she didn’t like the case…?
Let’s take John Lee Roche as an example of why Scully wouldn’t react this way: during that and Grotesque and even Folie a Deux, Scully had Mulder’s back even against her own professional interests. She only left him in FTF and One Son because she thought Mulder didn’t need her any longer. Scully’s nature has always been to ride along, even when she doesn’t want to-- How the Ghosts Stole Christmas, an excellent example: even before her keys were stolen, she was still trying to talk herself out of joining Mulder. But now, NOW when it’s inconvenient, she decides to skip out? Now she has even less excuse: this is her partner’s freedom on the line; and he stipulated FROM THE GET-GO that he needs HER to work WITH him to solve this, BEFORE she called the FBI to agree.
THIS is not Scully. THIS is ridiculous.
Now, to those who are reading this and thinking, “well, she could have done that”-- true, Scully could have. Anyone can do anything, IF there is a logical reason or it’s in a person’s best interest to take that action. For instance: Never Again was in-character for Scully because it fit into the mold of previously established reactions to father figures and feeling second place. Why this isn’t in her character is because the two keys to Scully’s loyalty-- being prioritized and depended upon as well as valued and trusted-- are being handed to her on a silver platter and she’s rejecting them (AND her partner’s safety) because she doesn’t wanna do it. Again, that’s never been who Scully is: Scully does the hard thing because it needs to be done; and she only shirks or avoids the emotional mirror being held up to her while still doing her job. There’s a life on the line here-- two, possibly, if Mulder doesn’t follow through on the deal-- and Scully would rather dump the problem in his lap when the logical, realistic, and easily graspable answer is do this case for a few rough weeks or months (because Mulder has always worked fast), then have unlimited freedom and time to go back to doing what she wants. This is not the place to write in this reaction: have one for Scully if, in the discussion for his freedom, Mulder starts pushing for reinstatement instead of simply finishing this case and letting his past go. That’s not what happens here (at the very least); so it makes no sense for her to be doing these actions-- especially with the information she and Mulder are working on-- now.
Scully says “You’ve done all they’ve asked for you to do” as if implying that Mulder’s finished his task NOW, RIGHT NOW-- that one talk with a psychic has won his freedom. …I’m sorry, how did she conclude this and where was this established?
Mulder was brought on to find an agent; Scully thinks that agent is dead, so oh, well! You’re done here, Mulder, let’s go~.
Scully. You know and Mulder knows and I know that the FBI said one agent but really meant the whole case. Don’t be stupid. You’re not a stupid person. They never stipulated either way, c'mon, you were there, you know this.
The problems aren't over AND IT'S ONLY 20 MINUTES IN.
Next pet peeve: as a general rule, Mulder is understanding with those on the wrong side of the law; however, Father Joes is a pedophile. Further, we’re not shown the scene where Father Joe has humanized himself, his reasons, or even his current character enough to justify the soft way Mulder is dealing with him.
All we have is that--
Father Joe isolates himself in a compound.
Father Joe told Scully to leave the room when she barked at him.
Mulder handles Father Joe gently despite him being a pedophile and despite him kicking Scully out of the interrogation (which sets up her feeling left out.)
Mulder is sitting in the car with Father Joe (and Whitney) and not Scully despite the two of them driving to the same place together.
Father Joe’s castration and inner torment is not brought up until later when he wants to appeal to Scully.
So, for all intents and purposes, Mulder is being needlessly sweet to a guy that confessed (at this point) to touching more than a couple altar boys and ostracized Mulder's partner just because he’s… psychic. Does Chris not remember how Mulder was initially not nice to Samuel in Miracle Man until after he pulled the Samantha card, was never nice to Modell in Pusher, and still picked fights with various witnesses because of their personal decisions? Again, the only time Mulder was nice or at least professionally kind with flawed characters was AFTER they owned up to or tried to atone for their sins…and, AGAIN, we aren’t shown that scene between he and Father Joe. AND THAT'S ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT SCENES BETWEEN THEM BECAUSE IT SETS THE TONE FOR THEIR PROFESSIONAL RELATIONSHIP. It falls into the “reply without a preceding remark” territory that I mentioned about the dialogue, except this time it's with characters. Really bad.
The writers try to save the interaction by having Father Joe sympathize about Samantha whereas the other agent up front doesn’t… but that only breaks the scene even more.
Male agent up front believed in psychic Father Joe before Mulder was even asked aboard the case.
Male agent up front believes in psychic abilities but still pokes at the man who was an “authority” on them by mocking Samantha’s “E.T.” abduction.
Male agent has been professionally distant and disdainful from the get-go; but it’s in HIS best interest to not create rifts with Mulder who is helping Father Joe help the FBI (and him) find their missing agent.
There is nothing in male agent’s character to suggest he is an irrational man; so, therefore, his random poke only serves to undercut his teammates’ efforts thus far to find and bring Mulder on board. This would waste everyone’s effort and precious time.
This scene only serves as a convenient excuse to simultaneously lore dump about Samantha and attempt, too late, to humanize Father Joe. Lore about Samantha is fine, but not if it contradicts (read: breaks) male agent's character. And humanizing Father Joe is pointless here because every monster can sympathize with others in their own crooked way. A truer test of character would be to show him go out of his way or comfort zone to help another person-- and that isn't what happens here.
Conclusion
Will I do a part two? Yeah, probably: I need to get to "the split" and Skinner and the vacation-- can't leave it (not even) half-done, after all.

Hello! Sorry I kept you waiting, but my thoughts on this wonderful circle follow! I didn't really speak at length or unpack a lot of it, but I wrote some broad strokes of what interests me about each of them.
I might unpack some of these things in future posts, but if you want to hear more about something specific I mentioned (or about a specific thing I didn't), please feel free to send more asks!
Nathaniel
I am well-known to be a Travis Stan On Main because he is into the same sorts of characters and archetypes and narratives and themes that I'm into. Nathaniel is no exception. I knew I was going to love him off the Q&A, and by God, do I love him.
I think there's something terrifying in how he often is so (endearingly) nervous and hapless yet commands absolute unthinking loyalty in Sean and Marion. But, I do love a character with an unexpected iron force of will underneath a more easily dismissed surface, and I'm always lucky Travis loves that too.
The Trapp family dynamics are absolutely BONKERS, and I've been turning over in my head the reveal that Nathaniel has lived his entire life in the shadow of not just an older brother, but an older brother who died when he was young—and he feels responsible for it. Truly blisteringly deep well to draw from here, and he's another example of how efficiently Travis can sketch a character and imbue them with a sense of deep and heavy history, a dense web of relationships, and a very present absence looming over them in so little time.
A classic Travis character. He's like what if Fjord was Cerrit.
Beatrix
I have to, unfortunately, admit that she is my least favorite of the circle. She is a solid character and well-executed in this episode, but unfortunately, she is of an archetype and is generally a type of character that I don't vibe with. (I had this same issue with Auggie—very well executed, just not my type.)
I am very interested in her place within this circle as the longest-serving among them, and I am very interested in the way she hovers over Jean and the old histories with Marion and Sean. I do also find that sort of distanced assessment of the three men and observation about having watched them go through flashbacks constantly; she is right that they, ultimately, need time, but her distanced tone teeters close to It Is What It Is and that's a fascinating, somewhat jaded perspective if so.
Sean
What a darling, violent boy. I love characters in this genre who take a shotgun or a baseball bat (literally, in this case) to supernatural creatures. Big energy of: "The horrors are incomprehensible? Buddy, I ain't interested in comprehending them. [cocks shotgun]"
His relationship with Nathaniel in particular is fascinatingly bonkers to me in the best way, and I think Sean's devotion to Nathaniel is wild in that like, even factoring in the war history, Nathaniel does not seem like a man Sean would normally respect—so this level of trust is quite evocative. The dead brothers throughline between them is going to drive me insane.
I'm so interested in leaning more about Sean's history during the war, especially because Sean is framed as that's all he has left. He is so stuck in that war that it's in his specialty, and I think there's a lot to explore in grappling with how important it is that Sean's brothers (apparently) died on the same mission Sean stopped being able to look at himself.
Jean
My girl! Like Nathaniel, I knew I was going to love her off the Q&A and, like Nathaniel, I very much do. I ADORE a character who is so tightly controlled they threaten to unravel at any moment. I love characters who seem cold and cool but care so much and is so full of warmth.
I'm also fascinated by the glimpse at her relationship with her father. There's also something very sweet and interesting in the way she dotes on Marion, and I'm definitely watching that relationship closely.
All in all, I wanna see her get her hands dirty, and she's started this chapter off with making a hard choice and I hope that she keeps struggling with them. It's very fun to watch a character who thinks they know the direction they going get all turned around. I am very excited to see this clear code she has further unravel across the chapter, and I love to watch a character with poise become undone.
Marion
As said, a sweet boy! He is so dear to me, and it tickles me that Luis comes onto the channel and immediately experiences The Visions. I'm really curious about the origin of this scar, and why the pointed plant imagery with the window and the patterned shirt and the promotional images. I also would love to know more about Marion's history during the war and what that breakdown at the end was about specifically.
I alluded to it above, but I find his relationship with Jean to be very endearing and I Am Looking while that develops. His relationship with Sean has some fascinating hesitation in it—the exchange about would you know if I was okay / would you tell me in particular—and I do have some thoughts about how interesting it is that it doesn't necessarily feel like Marion quite Gets Sean post-war even though they seemed very close pre-war. I also again find the intense loyalty Nathaniel inspires in him to be so well developed but also terrifying. Marion's is subtler than Sean's, but he is just as quick to listen to what Nathaniel commands, and I'm curious to see if we learn if there was a specific incident that earned it.
He is an enigma at the moment, but I love a haunted seer, and I'm so looking forward to it.

(For example if their previous body learned martial arts they’d still know how to do it) each regeneration looks and entirely different from one another and can be an entirely different sex. Eventually they will die for good and be unable to regenerate but the exact limit of regenerations is unclear.

oh wow. so the christmas special was a lot of fun! my main thoughts..
Ruby feels like a mashup of rose and clara with a dash of amy— idk if that was intentional, and it’s not necessarily a bad thing bc i think anyone who likes Ruby and hasn’t seen previous series can go back and watch those previous companions for the first time and find familiarity in them— but i really didn't like clara’s personality (or the actor), and i think ruby comes across as more of an algorithm designed character than a person which isn’t great in this war against ai. i like her backstory, her family and friends and being a muso are all great, but i need a few more eps to guage how i feel about her bc i don't love who they cast and she's trying too hard and the chemistry with ncuti just isn't there (maybe they'll become mates irl and that rapport will soon filter into their dynamic)—but it's early days, so we'll see how i feel about her and them by the end of the first season.
i love Ncuti! it's very early days so i'm curious to see how his vibe develops and how his dynamic settles with Ruby. he reminds me so much of eric from Sex Education—not a bad thing at all! i love that energy and that swagger and that vivacious youth! however: that intro club scene where he's dancing (even though it was fun af) was giving zero Doctor Who vibes (i especially didn't like the song choice, personal preference) but that might just be normal? how it usually goes with every new doctor this millenium? they all feel so different from the previous doctor's era vibes, which makes sense bc they're meant to be carving their own style etc. and keeping with the times..
ncuti is the youngest doctor yet, his companion is the youngest since the vintage days, and various character details from both of them point towards this series being geared at GenZ and GenA, trying to bring the joy and wonder to younger viewers— and i love that! it feels fresh! it’s modern! but as someone in their early 30s who can no longer bear watching teen dramedies (even if they are the best chance of seeing queer rep) bc the writing can be terrible but moreover i've just aged out of relating to people in their teens (especially GenZ/A) i just hope the writing of DW doesn't take on that same teen mindset so much that it puts off older viewers. i also worry he’s not believable as a doctor on earth bc he looks so young, but *handwavey*.
singing goblins? fun. singing doctor? well, it's ncuti so it was awesome. but knowing ruby is in a band, and this doctor can sing.. look, i just don't want to see more random musical numbers pop up in future eps— but i'm not a fan of musical eps in anything, so again, personal preference. it's a very american thing to do, inserting musical numbers into non-musical shows, so maybe it'll pull more american viewers?
the goblins look cool and the cgi works without looking fake and they use prosthetics for the goblin king which works well. it’s monstery fun doctor who! magic as science! language of ropes! conicidence! i think we’ll see a lot more fantasy over scifi this series, as was started with the whole salt spilling at the edge of the universe, and as a lover of supernatural and scifi i’m excited for the melding of the two! there’s a lot of fun and mystery to be found in that genre mashup. but one baby for all those goblins? or just the king? i have notes.
Fifteen being a foundling like Ruby hints at the arc of the series? will we find out who the doctor's parents are? was he created in a stardust labratory? is he really a human being from 20th/21st century earth? (would explain his returning to that era so often his whole life and seeking companions from then and there) IS RUBY THE DOCTOR? i love this setup, this mystery, and the theory that the one who left Ruby is Thirteen.
the best christmas song choices imho. the music and set design was festive and warm and such a treat, although i wish more scenes were set at night so we could get more christmas lights and lighting magic - the apartment and the church lighting were so beautiful and vibrant! the daytime setting just didn’t pop, it was bland.
shoutout to the crack in Ruby’s apartment swallowing her up in time— who else screamed Amelia Pond! the crack in my wall! and pointed manically at the screen? i feel you.
all in all: fun, smiles, thrills, almost tears. not a lot of feels even when they were prompted, but that might be on me not loving Ruby atm and not the writing lacking anything— i think this series is gonna deliver on the feels front, no question about it.
i think people who enjoyed the 21st century doctors, as well as those who are new to the show, will enjoy this ep and Ncuti’s portrayal (especially those who are fans of Sex Education). very curious to see how existing fans react to Ruby’s casting and characterisation and whether i’m in the minority of not liking her. but this was a fun little adventure! i’m looking forward to the series bc ncuti is a powerhouse and with RTD back at the helm and fantasy-scifi angle, i think we're in for some good storytelling.
ruby's actor is my main hangup, but we'll see. we shall see..
