Perfect Sense (Part I)
Request
Soulmate AU, please? (With A/B/O you're comfortable?) Fem!Reader (or Gender-Neutral) hasn't experienced much in her life, other than the experiments CADMUS had done to her shapeshifting powers. All she knew of the world outside the facility was what she'd learnt in the stories a sympathetic scientist would sometimes tell her when she was still a kid, to calm her down during testing. After 2 decades the scientist had enough and helped her escape, landing her in the arms of another Luthor.
A/N: Aaaand here another request you guys, writing a few fics in parts due to how long they get to be at the end. Thank you to the lovely person that sent this one, I'm sorry it's been ages, i still hope you can enjoy it. Love you guys
Lena Luthor x Fem!R/Shapeshifter//Word Count:Â 2,413
-------------------------------------------------------
"Subject C-308, ready for testing." A voice sounded through the speakers of the room and immediately the lights went on, blinding your eyes.
You couldn't use your hands to cover your face. They were tied to your sides with restrains to the medical bed you were laying on. It was the same with your feet, where the restraints were even tighter. Silhouettes started to moved and hoover above you, all covered in masks, blue suits and white gloves, looking down at you.
"Phase one of Project Lykaon, subject C-308, ready for intervention." A deep voice, from one of the silhouettes said. "All things set. Ready to start protocol."
"Initiate procedure." The same voice of the speakers sounded and the figures above you started to move.
You would have wished to tell them about the lights, how bright they were and how they hurt your eyes. About the ties around your wrists and feet, how uncomfortable they were, but the gag in your mouth didn't allow it and before you could even think of making a sound, it all went dark.
That was one of the first memories you ever had in your life, and it looked almost the same for the rest of it. It was all uncomfortable restrains and chains, white walls and white lights, the constant smell of antiseptic and cleaning products, knives, syringes, and endless surgical procedures. With no contact outside four walls of that place that felt more like a cage.
A cage fit to held the animal you were sure you were becoming.
After each intervention, after each transformation, with this savage instinct inside of you always in the edge of taking control. You were more beast than human, they used to say and you almost believed them.
But Dr. Jeremiah wouldn't have any of it. He was a different memory, a kinder, softer reminder that you were indeed human. The only person to ever treat you with compassion.
Before your interventions, on those terrible moments when you felt the anger and fear building up inside of you, threatening to tear to shreds anyone that dared come near you, he would come to talk you down. Dr. Jeremiah seemed to understand, how you would have done anything to put a stop to it. The numbness, the tiredness, the overwhelming sensations and pain that came each time after you were taken out of your room. But he would talk to you, speaking softly, assuring you you were going to be just fine, because you were stronger than you thought.
He would come after the operations to check up on you, sitting beside your bed with a worried expression, telling you stories about what awaited for you in the outside world, a world that was bigger than an operations room and your own. A world full of wonders like grass, sunsets, the sunshine, flowers, snow, and love. Whatever those things were.
"What's love?" You have asked once. He had paused then and thought for a long moment.
"Love is when two souls find and want each other." He had explained.
"What's a soul?" You asked then.
"It's something inside of you. The strongest part of you, (Y/N)" He smiled, only he called you with a name. "Your soul is everything you feel, and when you feel something so strong for someone else that means you have found your soulmate."
"A soulmate." You have whispered and frowned, still unsure of that idea.
"You will know it when you see them. It will feel as if you have known them all your life and everything you have been through will make sense." At that moment you had been too young to understand what he meant, but you would do it in due time.
Years passed, you became older but he kept telling you those stories. The ones you liked more where about the people. People that didn't hurt others just because they had the power to do it. He would even speak highly of one scientist he knew, so different from the ones you had met so far. A woman he had met time ago, someone so kind and loving that you liked to imagine her sometimes too and dream about meeting her in the outside world, to finally know something else apart from the nightmare that was being trapped there.
The dream came true a decade later, when you had grown up so much that it took them more and more people to control you. Dr. Jeremiah had been right, you were stronger and even stronger than they thought you were. That was one of the few joys you had then, besides the stories Dr. Jeremiah retold for you. Your powers grew too, the size of your body as you transformed, the length of your claws and teeth, the range of your sense of smell, the vision of your eyes. More powerful than the child you had been once.
Still, it wasn't enough for them.
"I think you enjoy your time with her a little too much, doctor." The voice of a woman caught your attention as you tried to fight the numbness of the strong sedatives.
You had been injected after being taken to the testing room, after finding out you could take three men with a single swing of one of your clawed hands, to keep you under control.
"I'm just trying to be comforting. Seems to help with her neural responses." Dr. Jeremiah was as indifferent as he could be.
"Well, you won't have to worry about that for much longer." The satisfaction in that woman's voice was noticeable and also the way you seemed to respond to her, with a terrible feeling of submission that was difficult to shake compared to any other people. You never felt like that in the presence of Dr. Jeremiah. "Project Lykaon has been terminated. She will be taken to another facility, and you can perform her last surgical procedure if you are that attached to her."
"Are you sure you want to dispose the only test subject that has survived all the interventions, Lilian?" His word came with a hint of outrage and concern. "With her powers she could still-"
"I spent too many resources already on this project, doctor. Besides, she's still incapable of following directives from her superiors, even when she seems compliant at first. And we can't do much with only one successful specimen, can we?" The woman cut him off and there was a moment of silence before she spoke again. "There's no need for more interventions. She will be taken tomorrow. After her autopsy, we will see which parts of her can be salvaged."
After the conversation was over, you tried to open your eyes looking for Dr. Jeremiah but he wasn't there anymore. You felt a certain heaviness in your chest, but you couldn't dwell on it as the sedatives finally won over you.
You woke up after a deep slumber restrained to a metal bed, only wearing a simple set of pants and shirt. As your senses returned you noticed you were being transported through the dark narrow hallways of the facility you had known all your life, but there was something different this time. You still felt a fog clouding your mind and the heaviness in your chest came back. It lessened when you heard Dr. Jeremiah's voice, who was talking with the armed men that transported your bed, giving them instructions on where to take you.
You moved your head, trying to catch a glimpse of the place you were going and noticed those weren't the usual turns and hallways you had grown accustomed to. When Dr. Jeremiah noticed you were awake, he put a hand on your shoulder to calm you down.
After a moment the movement stopped, you were left looking at the ceiling while Dr. Jeremiah talked with the men. He convinced them of leaving you and him alone for a moment, before they had to put you in the van. The men left without much complain, and the doctor seized the moment to act.
"(Y/N), listen to me." He rushed to try to loosen up your restraints. "I'm not letting them take you. You understand?"
The only thing you could do was nod as he kept moving, loosing the restraints on your naked feet and hands.
"You must remain on the bed. Don't move until I tell you to." You nodded once again. You saw him then take a vial and a syringe from his pocket and prepare it. "This will counteract the sedative in your system, you will be more alert in a few minutes, but remember, don't move."
He had injected you just in time before the armed men came back. They pulled your bed around and finally pulled you into the back of an armored van. They sat around you, two men at each side, guns in hand, along with Dr. Jeremiah on your left, who kept an eye on you at all times. As the vehicle started to move you also started to feel less and less numb with each passing minute. You were aware of each bump of the road, hear the sounds of the city in the distance, and your sight adjusted to what was around you as you squinted your eyes to see, trying not to get noticed. Just when you felt like your body was completely awake, you started to wonder what Dr. Jeremiah would do. Not much time had passed but the minutes felt like hours as you tried to be still.
Then you saw movement. Dr. Jeremiah was pulling something out of his pocket, and you opened your eyes to see him better. He looked at you, nodding slowly and with a fierce expression. Almost like telepathy you understood, you had to get ready, and in a second everything turned into chaos.
Dr. Jeremiah, in a faster move than you thought him capable of, pulled a teaser and attacked the man next to him. Almost immediately the rest of the men responded raising their guns at him. However, they didn't expect you to act as quickly as them or even you breaking your restraints so easily.
You grabbed one of the men with your right hand by his bulletproof vest and tossed him against the other one. Your strength, without the need of transforming, was enough to leave them on the floor. You didn't get the change to feel pleased with your work as a deafening bang went off on the left side of your head. You screamed as you raised your left hand towards the last man remaining, ignoring the ache in your head you managed to slash his side and right arm with your nails, now turned into claws. He had tried to eliminate you, but Dr. Jeremiah had managed to push him before he could do it.
The van stopped abruptly and took a sharp turn that made you fall from the metal bed. With your restraints already loose, it was easy to free yourself from them but as you tried to recover from the fall you felt a dizziness making it hard for you to stand up. A hand on your arm pulled you up. Dr. Jeremiah was on your side hurrying you up before the back doors opened. You couldn't hear his exact words but it didn't matter, with the adrenaline running once the back doors opened and you looked at two other agents pointing at you with your guns, you went feral.
Bullets flew the moment the agents saw the enormous black figure lunching at them, but your white sharp teeth showing as you growled and your black nail claws heading straight for their heads were enough to put a final stop to it. You jumped out of the van, leaving two more bodies behind you. A couple of bullets managed to hit you in the chest and arms but you would be recovering quickly, interventions had been done to make sure it didn't take too long.
Dr. Jeremiah jumped out of the van a moment later, gripping his shoulder. You smelled his blood and approached him with a hint of worry in your transformed face.
"It's alright. I'm okay." He smiled softly at you and looked around the streets. They were empty and there seemed to be no people around. "You have to go now. More will be on their way."
You protested with a whimper.
"I'll be okay, don't worry about me." Dr. Jeremiah moved his hand to one of his pockets an pulled a small piece of black fabric. "Run and don't stop. Not until you find her."
You came close to it, sniffing the fabric he held for you. Many scents were mixed on it, from Dr. Jeremiah, from the woman he had talked before, and another you couldn't identify. It wasn't as different from the woman, but it was distinctive enough you believed you could find it without confusing the two. You guessed you had to search for another woman and, feeling like it was a sort of treasure hunt, you let yourself imagine you would find that scientist he had talked about to you years ago.
But doubt filled your head as you looked at him, wondering what would happen to him once you left. There was also that pressure in your chest once again, as you thought what awaited in the outside world now that you had the chance to leave all this behind. All, including him.
"I have to stay." Dr. Jeremiah said catching his breath. He raised his good arm at you, caressing the black fur of your head with his hand as a way of last goodbye. "You go now, (Y/N), go and don't look back."
You pressed your head against his chest, listening to the beating of his heart. The last comforting sound you heard before screeching tires approached in the distance. They were coming for you. You had to leave.
You ran, darting into the shadows of the city, focusing on the memory of the scent Dr. Jeremiah had given you. Moments later you heard shots behind you, but you had been too long gone for them to even catch the sigh of you. You hoped those hadn't been directed to the doctor instead.
You used all your strength and speed to wander between warehouses and factory buildings to reach the urban lights on the other side.

Words Better Left Unread, or Is It? ~ Part I â
Part II Part III Part IV
Dear Wukong (donât ask why Iâm writing this when Iâm never going to send it),
I still have no idea what to think of myself. I was brought back to life by Lady Bone White, yet nothing feels right. I was pulled from the grave and forced into a situation involving debt and a contract I never agreed to. Facing you again was the hardest thing Iâve experienced in all the years of my life. It seems that no matter how hard I try or where I go, something always happens to mess everything up and leave me in ruins once more.
(Macaque sighs, running a hand down his face in frustration and exhaustion, before penning the letter.)
What held me back when it came to the kid? Iâm not sure. Maybe I thought I could be the Macaque I once was the way you remember me before my death. Before I realized it, I found myself helping Mk and you, even going against Lady Bone White. The kid, Mk, believes I am still the warrior I used to be. I wish I could be that person again, but those days are behind me now.
Then came Azure Lion, returned from the dead. Peng remained unchanged, doing everything he could to irritate me. Once again, I helpedâthis time for the kid. But perhaps I also did it for you when I entered the scroll to assist Mk in finding you in the ink scroll. Why did I do it? I'm still unsure. Maybe this is just another decision that will leave me in ruins. Perhaps I miss the way we used to be, the friends, sworn brothers that could go up against anythingâthe Hero and the Warrior. But those are just memories, remnants of what once was. You never apologized, but then again, neither did I. The truth is Iâm scared, what if it happens again? Pengâs words still ring in my head, âIs there anything Wukong could do that would break his hold over you? Pathetic!â Itâs true; itâs pathetic. Iâm pathetic. First, I got stuck in debt I didn't expect, feeling the pain of being pulled back from the brink, only to realize I was blinded in one eyeâsomething I could never regain. This betrayal came from you my best friend, someone I trusted. What would I even do if you ever apologized? Why do I still care?
This kid is changing me. Will this happen again? The kid invited me to a beach party, obviously, I knew Mk didnât tell you he invited meâno doubt about thatâbutâŠI have no clue why I accepted it and went, even though I was late. Why did I go at all? Why am I questioning who I am? Why am I questioning whether I truly hate you for what you did to me?Â
End of letter.Â
(Perhaps I should discuss it. However, these letters... I will never send it. Never to my ex-best friend was Macaqueâs thoughts.)
Macaque paused, staring at the neat writing of the Chinese ink characters as if they were lifting off the page. He sighed deeply, dropping the pen onto the table. Taking a moment to breathe, he felt the conflicting emotions swirling within him: memories of the past, the current situation, uncertainties about the future, and his confusing feelings for Wukong. He cared for Mk more than he would like to admit.
The sound of a chair scraping against the floor echoed as Macaque turned to look out the window at the night sky. The full moon shone brightly, a stark contrast to the darkness surrounding it. For a moment, memories of the past flooded back â the good times spent with Wukong, the laughter and adventures they shared. But then, the painful memories returned, particularly on the day of his death. He hadn't even had time to scream; it all ended in an instant. A shiver ran down his back. Would things ever be different?Â
Macaque got up from his cheap thrifted desk (not just grabbed from his shadows wherever the desk was and used it as his furniture, finders keepers. Losers wonât know and just think their house had been looted). He went to the kitchen to see if there was something he could make, as he suddenly noticed that Ramble and Savage had left him. He guessed they wanted to walk around or do somethingâsomething they often did when he hung around the house doing nothing. Ramble was focusing on the letter and had subtly caught Savage's attention, showing her the letter while trying to ensure that Macaque didnât notice. They were his shadows, although a separate embodiment from him, and had their little personalities. They knew his thoughts and knew his feelings. Savage and Ramble looked at each other almost pausing, they were like mischievous teenagers. As Savage nodded, she grabbed the letter as Ramble's job was to distract Macaque.
Macaque was in the kitchen, rummaging through the cabinets and the refrigerator, when he heard a slight movement behind him. He turned around to see Savage holding the unfinished letter. He froze, realization and surprise overtaking his expression as he stared at her.
"What the heck are you doing with that, Savage?"Â
Macaque's eyes narrow as he stalks closer to Savage, a mix of anger and confusion on his face. He holds out his hand.
"Give me that. Now."
As soon as Ramble yells âScatter!â, Savage scatters into a dozen, smaller, shadow clones that dart around the room. Macaque growls, frustrated as he tries to reach for the letter still clutched in Savage's hands. He attempts to grab the letter, but the shadow clones weave and dodge, evading his grasp. Macaque's frustration grows as he chases after the clones, his movements growing more frantic and aggressive.
"Dang it, come back here!"Â
Savage manages to slip out the window, the letter still clutched tightly in her hands. Macaque hears the window opening and turns to see her escaping.
"No, get back here!"
Macaque sprints to the window, reaching for Savage, but she's already outside and out of reach. He lets out a frustrated yell and smacks his palm against the window. Macaque turned to Ramble, who shrank back under his gaze. He crossed his arms and fixed Ramble with a stern glare.
"You too, Ramble. What were you two thinking?"
Ramble fidgeted with his hands, avoiding Macaque's intense gaze. He knew they had messed up by letting Savage grab the letter. He looked up at Macaque, a mix of guilt and fear in his eyes.
"We⊠we were just being curiousâŠ"
Macaque's eyes widened in realization. His anger was suddenly replaced by a sinking feeling of dread. He couldn't believe what he had missed. The letter, the letter meant for Wukong he always wrote those, two small buckets filled since his revivment but never sent them of course and now it was out of his control.
"No, no no no..."
Macauqe ran a hand down his face, a feeling of dread and panic washed over him. His mind started racing, trying to figure out what to do next. He couldn't let Wukong get that letter, not like this. It was too personal, too revealing of truths he had wanted to keep to himself. Macaque stood there, his mind racing as he considered the gravity of his situation. "What am I going to do now?" he thought, the knot of frustration tightening in his chest. He knew that Savage, the swiftest of his shadows, had a knack for darting away with whatever they desired. Ramble, on the other hand, was a master of stealth, slipping in and out of places unnoticed. It was no wonder that the letter, filled with secrets and emotions he had long kept buried, had been taken so easily.
Clenching his fists, he battled against the rising tide of helplessness. He was acutely aware that there was nothing he could do to retrieve the letter now; it was likely already far beyond his reach, whisked away into the night. A heavy sigh escaped his lips as the reality of the situation washed over him like a cold wave. The very thoughts and feelings he had worked so hard to keep hidden were now in the possession of someone he had hoped to shield them fromâWukong.
The anticipation of Wukongâs reaction loomed over him like a dark cloud. Macaque felt a chill run down his spine at the thought of the impending confrontation. With a heavy heart and a racing mind, he accepted the truth: he would be spending the night in restless torment, unable to shake this gnawing anxiety as he awaited the fallout of choices made long before. Sleep would evade him, leaving him trapped in his thoughts, haunted by the secrets that now hung in the air like an unfinished song.

React: A Late-Canon Reviler Gives the Revival a Try (My Struggle I), Part I
For David Duchovnyâs birthday, I put out a poll asking Tumblr which of his projects I should watch for the first time.Â
The Revival won. Welp.Â
I then, fool that I am, put up another poll wherein I doomed myself by including an option to watch the whole thing.Â
And here we are.Â
My Struggle I.Â
Oh, boy.Â
This post will be long because I'm laying the groundwork for the rest of the series.
MY MODUS OPERANDI
I donât care how cute or cuddly or happy or heartfelt individual MSR moments are, popcorn will be thrown if those scenes are achieved through incomplete, inane, or nonsensical plot points. Give me 1+1=2 or give me death.
The Revival is part of a whole that includes all of Seasons 1-9 and Fight the Future and I Want to Believe. As much as I prefer to distance this series from canon, the reality that it functions as a direct follow-up remains; and it needs to be judged accordingly.
And, as always, I separate the art from the artist~.
...WELP. Itâs time to face my doom.Â
Let's go!
MY STRUGGLE IV
The introâs⊠fine. Engaging, even.Â
I did notice, though: the last series and Fight the Future and I Want to Believe began with the same formula: glimpses from what will be an x-files case, then straight to Scullyâs perspective. Usually Mulderâs narration and POV didnât feature until the tail-end of a two or three parter, i.e. Redux or Amor Fati or⊠well, even then, it was juxtaposed against Scullyâs.Â
Scully was the voice of The X-Files-- even Chris Carter noted that her report of each episodeâs casefile became a motif of the show. Mulderâs narration was rare, very rare, even in episodes that were written to focus on him.Â
A definite and purposed choice, to be sure. Mulder as an active agent in his own story. âŠOR a story that focuses on Mulderâs voice instead of Scullyâs.Â
We shall see.Â
The intro continues; and itâs still engaging, possibly gripping (too bad I know where this leads)... but the music got a bit LOTR there. Is that just me? Seems⊠mellow, orchestral, a little more fantasy than sci-fi. Am I nitpicking? Maybe.Â
The BIBLE references UFOs?? Lol, no. (Unless you count the objects described in Revelations-- the book, not the episode-- but even then, those are largely considered to be drones, not UFOs.)
Chris Carter, I see you.Â
(Note from the future: NOW I see why the Bible bit was included-- lots of heavy-handed "God means this, Scully" in order to get her on-board to join the files. Ugh.)
âŠTheyâre really doubling down on the UFO lore, huh. All of which evaporated because of global warming, I guess.Â
GUYS, why couldnât this have been about life on Earth after Colonization?????
It fits with the disaster footage, it fits with Mulderâs voiceover, it fits with the character progression from Season 9 (I GUESS), it fits with a whooooooooooole ton of other factors.Â
Iâve never been one for wanting Colonization in canon, but it literally would have worked for this series. There wouldn't need to be a complete wipeout of humanity, maybe just a âdisaster happened, but the humans are fighting backâ scenario.Â
And that would fit with Mulder and Scullyâs "breakup", PERHAPS-- they spent so much time working, trying to save the world (she in science, he on the ground or with untainted factions who coalitioned post-Colonization) that their relationship cracks would need to be actively worked through. Not broken up so much as together and repairing.
It would also help CC and co. to avoid the tempest of modern US politics and the more mainstream conspiracies that were taking hold at that time-- a broader reach to all audiences, a "bigger picture" for everyone to unite under.
(Guys, they should have let me write for this show. âŠI take it back, Iâd have quit after three days.)Â
Also: The show writers spent all their brain power on this sequence and this sequence alone, didnât they?Â
Obiwan Kenobi and Military Man are going on a bus somewhere. Â
...On closer inspection, neither man looks like anything like Obiwan Kenobi, but the nickname is staying.
Weâre back to Scully at a hospital-- not unlike I Want to Believeâs opening.
Skinner called? Oh. Didnât know he was âhereâ this early.Â
WAIT.Â
Wait, wait, wait.Â
Scully just called up Mulder like nothingâs a big deal? He answered like nothingâs a big deal? Sheâs smiling over his joke from the get-go?
âŠAnd weâre supposed to believe theyâre seriously broken up. Which the show will insist is the case.Â
David and Gillian really said, âScript? What script?â and did what they wanted. I salute them.Â
Also, âWhatâs happening out there, Scully?â is a great line to point to Mulderâs continued isolation⊠which the series will IMMEDIATELY toss aside because heâs, apparently, not been as much of a hermit lately? (Granted, this could be a joke at his own expense because heâs no longer claimed by ~the darkness~, butâŠ. I donât think the writingâs gonna be that clever, Iâll be honest.) Â
Siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh.Â
Fine, I admit it.Â
Iâm loving this so far.Â
And thatâs gonna make me even angrier later on.Â
âWhy doesnât he [Skinner] just call me?â
âHe doesnât know how to reach you, Mulder. I barely know myself.â
Mulder is baffled and a tinge annoyed, Scully is amused and straight shooting.Â
THERE IS NO HINT, BEHAVIOR, OR MANNERISM SUGGESTING THEYâVE BROKEN UP. None. At all. Heâs isnât reluctant to answer her call, isnât sad or withdrawn, isnât affected by anything sheâs saying other than to be teasy or poky. She isnât hesitant to call, isnât sad or depressed, isnât anything other than a little pleased to dangle a juicy tidbit in front of Mulderâs face.Â
This is gonna follow IWTBâs ping-pong writing-- theyâre fun and in-character, theyâre suddenly out-of-character, theyâre fun and in-character, theyâre suddenly out-of-character, etc. etc. etc.-- isnât it?
(Mulder taping over his laptopâs webcam is a great touch and not something at all that Iâve done before. At all.)Â
âI thought you were done with UFOs-- the âstranglehold they put on your very existenceâ, I believe you put it.âÂ
âIâm just the messenger, Mulder.â
Thatâs GOOD, thatâs necessary writing. Thatâs planting the seeds of what happened between them, what led to a cooldown or a breakup or a whathaveyou. AND STILL neither character acts as if theyâve broken up: no melancholy, no sadness, no nothing.Â
Mulderâs timbre became a little sardonic while quoting back her words, but that doesnât mean theyâve broken up. If anything, that points to a bicker and line-in-the-sand between them-- him bringing up UFOs at the dinner table and her reminding him to talk to someone else about it before turning the topic to how the lettuce is growing or something.
Neither actor is performing like one would if pain and trauma and heartbreak and distance were placed between them; and that really complicates things because the breakup is built on top of the aforementioned list of struggles.Â
Would Mulder have dug his heels in post 2012, seeing it as a sign that âthe aliensâ just changed their plans? Yes.Â
Would Scully have seen a pursuit down that rabbit hole as a waste of time? Debatable. The Truth S9 Scully wouldnât have-- the aliens are still out there; and they cost her months of her life, months of Mulderâs abduction, months of Mulderâs death, months of Mulderâs separation, and the ultimate cost: Williamâs adoption and their life on the run. Post The Truth Scully would have seen this as her quest, too: she wonât give up, she says in the finale, because he wonât.Â
IWTB Scully, however, would- and that's a problem.Â
Iâve already discussed, at length, how out-of-character Scully was in I Want to Believe (posts here.) Although Mulder doesnât escape from the same writing blunders, she is really, really scalped: of her courage, of her will, of her determination.Â
Whenever Scully gave up, in canon, it was only because she thought she was holding Mulder back, or when she felt Mulder had lost his faith and trust in her. That held true in Season 9-- despite the appalling writing choices there, too-- but didnât in IWTB.Â
The Revival had the perfect opportunity to factory reset the writers' mistakes: portray a wiser duo who continue to fight the fight according to their strengths, like they always have before Mulder ever met Scully. (When Mulder tells Scully to set up a meeting with Skinner, he adds, âDonât pretend Iâm going aloneâ-- which reinforces my point.)Â
But I know that's not going to happen. Â
Scully goes without argument-- THATâS GOOD, THATâS GOOD CHARACTER WRITING. At this point in the game, of course she would-- they trust each other, they have for years, theyâd have reached even deeper levels after going on the run for [insert math] years. All good things!Â
The problem: this will create a huge conflict with her actions later.
(Iâm already so disappointed.)Â
âUber?â/âHitchhiking. Relax, Scully, Iâm kiddingâ was a fun modernization of their humor, Iâll take it.Â
This scene is starting to highlight the distance between them, which is all well-and-good, but feels tonally different from the previous scene. As in, their two scenes were definitely filmed on different days, in different moods, and with different intents.Â
Sheâs worried about him, with tears in her eyes; he has his walls up; thereâs distance, as previously noted.Â
âGood for you to get out of that little house every once in a whileâ/âCertainly was good for youâ is followed up with knowing, indulgent, pleased smiles and you expect me to believe these two are seriously broken up. Nope. Iâve seen Scully sad but amused, Iâve seen Scully too sad to be amused, but these two? This moment? Nah.
Tonally dissonant-- the IWTB problem: at-ease and close one minute, at-odds and distant the next. Hoorayyyyyy....
None of this makes sense for a long-term, permanent (as Scully infers later to someone else) breakup. Nor for a short-term, semi-permanent one. Math doesnât math.Â
âIâm always happy to see you,â she says, implying he's the one who permanently pulled away⊠which will be contradicted later this very episode.Â
âIâm always happy to find a reason [to leave the house],â he says, somberly.Â
Both of which are odd lines.Â
If heâs happy to leave the house to see her⊠why hasnât he?Â
If sheâs happy to see him, always, but says a relationship between them was "impossible" (which she will later), why is Scully staring at him with heart eyes, hoping he gets better so they can continue their relationship? (And mark my words, this tone underscores her interactions with him the rest of this series.)Â
Tadâs here. Heâs... fine. He represents the overly cautious very well. At least he hasnât gone full Alex Jones mockumentary (...yet.)Â
Iâve heard criticisms that Mulder and Scully donât act like themselves in this series, but based off the few minutes Iâve seen here⊠I donât agree.Â
The essence is the same. Truly. Scullyâs got the same face that lights up the same way, Mulderâs got the same expressions and young-at-heart humor. Neither are really melancholic. Neither are David or Gillian esque.Â
Perhaps that will change.Â
(Note from the future: OH BOY. Which Mulder and Scully are we talking here-- OG Mulder and Scully? Nope. IWTB Mulder and Scully? Yep. David and Gillian? Once or twice.)
But, again, their interactions feel⊠wasted. Hollow. Theyâre supposed to be broken up, but their breakup doesnât contribute to their interactions or the plot. Theyâre supposed to have suffered and are working back to each other⊠but they arenât really separated, havenât seemed to suffer (note from future: except for one scene which comes outta nowhere), and wonât collapse back together on-screen.
Theyâre supposed to be wiser and more mature, but theyâll still engage in a silly will-they-wonât-they while Mulder eats up the latest UFO or conspiracy slop heâs either already engaged in or debunked [insert math] years ago and Scully clings to her cowardice like a leech.Â
First nagging problem: Scully smiling at Tad, Scully excusing Mulderâs mannerisms when he becomes briefly jealous, Scully making nice with a conspiracy nut.Â
âŠIsnât that Mulderâs job? Didn't she leave because conspiracies were consuming her life? Does this mean she actually does want this life back but is she playing coy or elusive because...?
Furthermore, when Mulder popped a comment off to a witness or informant in the past, Scully never excused him-- just breezed over it professionally with another question. Sheâs only saying âexcuse himâ here because sheâs taken a shine to Tad. WHY, on this post-2012 global warming green Earth, WOULD SHE?
Tad says Mulder is the X-Files, Mulder says that âbook is closedâ... WAIT. Wait, hold up--
Pause. Stop. Rewind.Â
Mulder wants to believe. Actual proof is hard to come by.Â
Tad thinks Mulder is the X-Files.Â
MULDER SAYS⊠*ahem*... Mulder says, âIâm afraid that book is closed.â âŠWhich means heâs no longer into UFOs or aliens, too. SO. why did Scully LEAVE.
If thatâs behind him, why arenât they together again???? Mulder didnât know who Tad OâMalley was a minute or so ago, meaning heâs been outta the conspiracy scene for a bit. That MEANS his departure from Conspiracyville's been long enough to patch-up his obsession and ensuing depression, I guess.
But then... what about Scully??
Because Mulder wants her to come back (already subtly established in each scene), and Scully is concerned for his welfare; but Scully thinks heâs still into UFO conspiracy and hasnât come back because of it? BUT SHE ISNâT SHOCKED WHEN HE SAYS âIâm afraid that book is closedâ MEANING SHE KNOWS HEâS PUT THAT BEHIND HIM... BUT STILL HASNâT RETURNED?
And both of them arenât acting as if theyâve broken up, anyway, except for a pointed line of dialogue here and a brief reaction there before they yeet back to the status quo.
Theyâve left that behind them, Scully says, for better or worse. And Mulder latches onto that better or worse, making a pointed barb at their breakup, butâŠ. Thereâs no writing glue, just suggestion and inference; and the suggestions themselves donât add up.Â
Here come the bullet points.Â
Season 10 posits Mulder became depressed after the aliens didnât invade in 2012-- thatâs reasonable and logical, his nature is depressive when his expectations are subverted or smashed or etc.Â
Season 10 also posits Scully left because Mulder became too much to deal with. Thatâs⊠not logical, since her nature is to rescue and nurture, even when Mulderâs being an actual boil on her sittinâ cheeks (ala Demons, etc., etc.)Â
Season 10 posits Mulderâs hard to get a hold of-- despite being in the same house the FBI helicoptered to in IWTB-- and posits it might be hard for Scully to get a hold of him-- despite the fact both characters easily got in contact, knew it was each other, and even joked about the fact itâs hard to get in contact with Mulder⊠which means it really isn't. (The script doesnât catch these discrepancies, of course, pretending Mulder is very hidden away at the same ol' house he'd been discovered at in 2008.)Â
Season 10 says Scully doesnât want UFOs to be part of her life anymore, that it was a stranglehold⊠yet she came along on a conspiracy gig without question to⊠what? Be around Mulder? But then, why warm up to the conspiracy guy-- an embodiment of what drove her and her partner apart?
Season 10 posits Mulder chased Scully off with his conspiracy spiraling YET ALSO states heâs put that part of his life-- conspiracies, UFOs, the X-Files-- behind him. Which implies: A. Mulderâs aaaaaaall better now and B. he put that all behind him but Scully never came home and C. Scully shouldnât know he put that all behind him if thatâs whatâs keeping her away; but she does know because his declaration doesnât take her by surprise, which means sheâs still driven away and concerned for him for no discernable reason. Â
Season 11 posits Scully didnât leave because Mulder became too much to deal with but because she, too, had issues to deal with. This point wasn't mentioned or hinted at in the episode that introduces their breakup, which makes that line of reasoning a complete rewrite. (Whatever. Iâll judge how well thatâs executed when I get there.)
It doesnât add up.Â
Are we surprised.Â
Five seconds after this, I had to listen to a back-and-forth between Tad OâMalley and Mulder on conspiracies and Conservatives and alien beliefs and the OâReilly Factor andâŠ.
This seems out of touch, Iâm not sorry.Â
When this show aired, Conservatives already had their miles-long conspiracy theories. For Mulder to be ignorant of that fact while allegedly knowing exactly who and what Tad believes while also allegingâŠ.
More bullet points!
Fox âIâm afraid that book is closedâ Mulder has, supposedly, been out of the conspiracy scene.Â
Fox âIâm afraid that book is closedâ Mulder isnât aware that not only did 2015 Conservatives believe in aliens-- despite the fact Tad is a watered-down copy-paste of Alex Jones-- but that there were also Conservative believers in the 90s (who were a fringe in their own group, but.) This was Mulderâs expertise; and his eidetic memory isnât likely to have tossed that info because it was no longer relevant to his life.Â
Fox âIâm afraid that book is closedâ Mulder has supposedly not been out of the conspiracy scene-- despite saying he is-- because he does know who Tad OâMalley is-- despite not knowing who he was two minutes ago.Â
Mulder is assuming that Conservatives âof your credentialsâ donât believe in UFOs or â9/11 false-flag conspiraciesâ despite people from the Left, Center, and Right publicly believing those conspiracies in 2015.Â
Fox âIâm afraid that book is closedâ Mulder is supposed to be dismantling Tadâs grift; but he (and the writers) sound uneducated and incredibly out-of-touch during this dialogue-- as if all Conservatives were still Bush-era believers. Most were suspicious of the government by this time (they helped elect a man who ran on a âdrain the swampâ campaign, after all.) Mulderâs bewilderment here is old and tired, even by 2015 standards.Â
This writing is flashy-- long sentences, quick back-and-forths-- but poorly constructed and badly executed.Â
This is also the first segment where David Duchovny is peeking through Fox Mulder; where Scully is swinging wildly between absolutely-fine-with-Mulder and weâre-no-longer-together; and where we, the audience, are being force-fed that only one side of the political aisle believes in aliens-- or the Bigger Question or whatever-- on a show that wants to poke at unfounded conspiracy beliefs.
Oh, look! Scully made a Scully-face, so everythingâs good now!Â
(UuuuuuuuUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGH--)
Sveta. Aww, I like her--
âYou donât remember me.â
âNo, I think Iâd remember.â
WHAT WAS THAT.Â
Show writers, STOP with the romantic triangulation, itâs NOT. GONNA. HAPPEN. David doesnât even TRY to make that romantic-ish. Yet you angle on Scullyâs face as if sheâs supposed to be out-of-the-loop and a tinge jealous.Â
WAIT, WAIT, WAIT, hoooooooooooooooooooold up.Â
Svetta was a dark-haired little girl Mulder interviewed after her first abduction, meaning sheâs set up to be another Samantha.Â
SoâŠâŠâŠâŠâŠâŠâŠ. Whatâs with the murky jealousy issue, CHRIS. You wedged it in solely so Scully would feel jealous over Mulder? Yâknow. Like I Want to Believe?Â
And I say Chris Carter because he wanted to play the breakup angle:
"We do it in an interesting way," Carter told The Hollywood Reporter. "We put some of the tension back in that was relieved by them being together. It added to the storytelling opportunities. It's something that I came up with; I had been thinking about it. There was always talk of [breaking them up] if we did another movie."
The first shot canon takes right between the eyes:
Scully being âfamiliarâ with the âscreen memoriesâ abductees are given was a cool touch⊠except sheâs never been given âscreen memories.â The abductees in Jose Chungâs From Outer Space were given screen memories-- she was returned a blank slate. (Even Mulder didnât have âscreen memoriesâ after his abduction.)Â
Scully poking Sveta about aliens taking her unborn fetuses seems a tad (heh) strong except all the alien-related pregnancies have been the result of government testing, not alien probes. So. If this scene followed canon's rules, her skepticism would be warranted.
But this skepticism is still odd.Â
Two seconds ago, she was making nice to Tad OâMalley in the car, and now sheâs leading the questioning for Sveta. The odd icing on top of this odd cake is that Scully left because she didnât want UFOs to have a stranglehold on her life, yet here she is leading an interview with an abductee.
Sveta: âI have alien DNA, for sure.â
Scully: âHave you had a doctor confirm that?â
Sveta: âNo.â
Me, too, Mulder. Me, too.Â
Scully doesnât question the alien DNA bit, so thatâs good.Â
âŠIâll bet everyone forgets she and Mulder have a bit lingering in their systems from the black oil and his brain thingy and residue from when she touched the ship and and and.Â
âSomething you can test. Dana.âÂ
What⊠what was that.Â
Honestly, what was that. Whatever mood David was conveying through Mulder, it didnât match anything from any previous scenes, let alone this one.
Is he poking at Scully? Why? Heâs not jealous anymore (if he even was.) The way he says it and her expression in response implies they have a tense back-and-forth going on, but they donât. THEY DONâT.Â
Weâre 13 minutes in and I could make another numerical list. But I wonât. Yet. Â
Back to not-Obiwan Kenobi and Military Man.Â
That alienâs stupid bad-looking.Â
Wait.Â
Thatâs not how canon said Roswell unfolded.Â
And the first alien shot on Earth was by Deep Throatâs hands-- that was his whole turning-point backstory.Â
CURSE YOU, LACK OF A SHOW BIBLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
(Note from the future: All of that past canon? Fake. Faked. All lies. None of that happened.)
âWhat have you done??â Not-Obiwan Kenobi yells⊠and what have they done?Â
Back to Scully and Sveta.Â
Sveta can move things with her mind-- not all the time-- but at least Scully is listening to her claims without automatically shutting them down.Â
But alsoâŠ
âI can move things. With my mind,â should have IMMEDIATELY had a greater impact on Scully, up-close-and-personal as she was to her sonâs abilities. But nope! No reaction! Of course!Â
Sveta âYou were together but now youâre notâ is asking the right questions. I donât even mind Sveta. Iâll bet this episodeâs the last time we see her, though.Â
Does she contribute to anything? No. But sheâs nice, so.Â
WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIT, WAIT, WAIT.Â
Scully diagnosed-- wait, hold up, list time.Â
Scully diagnosed Mulder with depression.Â
That killed their relationship.Â
âŠTHAT killed their relationship? After everything?Â
The writers are going to have to explain, in detail, why that killed it.Â
Why does canon need to explain? Because we have a history of Scully sticking by Mulder during the worst periods of both their lives-- leaving him would have to require a very, very good reason.
And there is no indication, thus far, that Mulderâs depression drove a humungous wedge between them, forcing her to walk away. In fact, there is no indication a wedge exists between them, AT ALL-- only the odd, inconsistent word or phrase here or there that bears no weight on the plot or their ultimate decisions.
Whenever Scully left in canon, it was because she could no longer help Mulder. Season 11 will rewrite Season 10âs initial explanation but setting that aside: weâre not given any indication that she did try to help him; or that his depression was so deep and so dangerous that it drove her away.
And if it were that deep or that dangerous enough to drive her away, Scully leaving would have been the last and worst possible action she could have taken. If Mulder's mental state was in such a massive nose-dive that she couldnât handle what he was going through, Scully-- a medical professional-- would have had him hospitalized, even temporarily against his will, because she would know (per Demons or Gethsemane or Amor Fati) that this level of depression always manifested in suicidal tendencies for her partner.
But Mulder, as per the rules laid out in this episode, never went that far in his deterioration. (Note from the future: We'll get to that.)
If he had, Skinner would have been aware of his hospitalization and wouldnât have asked for his help; Scully would have been aware and wouldnât have passed on the information; and Scully wouldnât have called from the hospital with a degree of buoyancy when relaying Skinner's request to Mulder.Â
In short: Scully leaving = very big, very drastic measure. Mulder suffering from depression = very big, very bad consequences. Scully's nature and past actions = getting Mulder help, even if he resists at first (i.e. shooting him in the shoulder to save his life.) Mulder and Scully's partnership = unbroken, except through distrust or botched writing.
âAnd you have a child together.â
Wow, that wasnât clunky at all.Â
SCULLY STICKS SVETA HARD WITH A NEEDLE BECAUSE SVETA MENTIONS WILLIAM, darkly saying "That's enough", SO SVETA WOULD KNOW SHE DID IT ON PURPOSE.
Iâm⊠so disgusted. Like, eck. Urk. Awful.Â
Telling Sveta to back off, strongly, would be in-character; USING PAIN TO DO SO isâŠ. So wrong on so many levels. Scully never utilized medicine to inflict pain or injury on her enemies.
Wow, this grossed me out. You know why?
Scully diagnosed Mulder with depression and left. At first glance, that seem like an out-of-character action that the writing can salvage later by this or that means.
BUT THEN, Scully inflicts pain on Sveta for mentioning William, leaving the audience with the impression that sheâs vindictive.Â
Which then connects the dots between âvindictiveâ and âleft Mulder when he was diagnosed with depression.â
And since we, the audience, havenât been given a stronger reason for how Mulderâs depression got that bad or why she didnât help him through it, weâre then left with a sour impression of Scullyâs character.Â
The writers then try to imply Sveta was spilling out Scullyâs personal secrets to prove that her powers were real, but that still doesnât give Scully the right to abuse her power. Especially because a traumatized woman was trying any method possible to be believed.
And the fact that Sveta is also a victim of the government weaponizing science and medicine makes me even angrier at Scully.
Ohhhhhhhhhhhh, BOY, another helicopter outside the Unremarkable House, my favorite part of IWTB....
Mulderâs never seen⊠an alien replica vehicle.Â
Oh, my mistake: âNo. Never. Not like that.â Covering all the bases, I see. Yâknow, in case the writers FORGOT MULDER SAW ONE in SEASON 1, EPISODE 2.Â
OH, LOOK, heâs got his wonder face back, everythingâs aaaaaaaaaaaaall better now!
Running on free energy theyâve had since the 40s, sure Jan. Whatever you say.Â
This just feels so old. Like. Tech we havenât had since the 40S, GUYS, GET IT, BIG MONEY CORPOS KEPT IT FROM US. Yeah, we got it.Â
And the flashbacks to Not-Obiwan Kenobi just walking off with an alien corpse because Military Man didnât⊠see⊠value in studying⊠it. I guess.Â
Scully doing âGodâs workâ giving kids ears because their biology neglected it.
I admit, thatâs an intriguing window into her perspective of God vs. science, and how she sees a personâs biology separate from God messing them over or messing them up just because. I dig it.
(Note from the future: This will be used as a plotline club rather than a nuanced discussion of her faith.)
Mulder being the most challenging relationship sheâs ever had-- âand the most impossibleâ-- is a weird line. Because yes, itâs true that their relationship is challenging; but her fervor at impossible is the only time in this episode we see an adversarial tendency, DESPITE My Struggle I trying to drum up moments to prove TENSIONS still LINGER (they don't.)Â
Itâs IWTB all over again. Siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh.Â
âYeah. I got that impression.â Tad says, and Scullyâs hurt because she thinks Mulder gave Tad that impression of her.Â
So. So. Wait.Â
Scully lied when she stated âItâs impossibleâ because she didn't like Tad poking into her private affairs?
But she sounded truly convinced their relationship was "impossible" while saying it.
So, she was either angry or still confused about her emotions-- which is fine, Scully's not always in-tune with her inner workings-- when Tad replied, "I got that impression."
Which explains why she was so hurt at Mulder's seeming rejection.
Because she thinks Mulderâs behavior led Tad to that conviction.
Which means CC just wants Mulder and Scully to be caught in a miscommunication fic.
Also, why is Tad so sad about this? Were they his OTP, or is he pretending to sympathize to get in Scullyâs pants? Because thatâd be crummy, Chris, to have her be overly nice to Tad only for him to try to twist that into an opening as the new conspiracy guy on the block.Â
On a lighter note, Chris Carter said Mulder and Scully could still get it in their 50s, so thereâs that.
HE DID, HE DID SET SCULLY UP TO BE PURSUED BY TAD--
WHAT. WHAT. WHAT WHAT WHAT--
KNOCK IT OFF, CHRIS.Â
Poor Sveta. Sheâs gonna be butchered in this script, isnât she?
The series is EATING up vast amounts of time with very little scale or grounding. For all I know, a day or a week could have passed.Â
Itâs so, so badly paced.Â
Mulderâs investigating now, without Scully, because he noticed Sveta had a tell during the interview.Â
Um.Â
Sure, thatâs a Mulder thing to do.
Oh, wait. This is the âwork of menâ realization. Â Â
The dialogue between Mulderâs questions and Svetaâs answers are really disjointed, as if theyâre mildly talking past each other-- another aspect of IWTB I couldnât stand.Â
Welp, at least itâs easy to prove they were both written by the same people.Â
The second shot-in-the-head for canon:Â
âSveta, who took your babies?âÂ
âMen.â
âMen? Humans? You saw their faces.âÂ
Also, Svetaâs babies are referred to as her babies, but William-Jackson isnât Scullyâs baby despite sharing half her DNA but Emily Sim was Scullyâs baby despite also only sharing half her DNA.
Itâs a mess.Â
Well⊠Mulder doesnât seem too surprised here that men were involved in her abductions (I mean, he's long since been aware the government was involved from day one, so.) Itâd be really stupid if the writing made him surprised about this later, wouldnât it?
âŠWouldnât it?
Another poorly constructed set of lines:
âI havenât worked for them [the government] in years.âÂ
âBut you always wondered⊠if they were lying to you, too.âÂ
No, he didnât wonder-- he believed it.
A wonky way to address his old skepticisms, for sure.Â
JUST AFTER I NOTED THAT MULDER DIDNâT LOOK SURPRISED AT SVETA'S REVELATION, HE CALLS UP SCULLY AND MAKES A BIG DEAL ABOUT IT BEING A CONSPIRACY OF MEN.Â
I knew this was coming, but maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan that was so, so poorly handled.
SCULLY WAS GETTING (sort of) WINED AND DINED BY TAD OâMALLEY??????????????
I HATE IT HERE, WHAT ARE YOU DOING, WHAT IS HAPPENING, WHAT IN THE WORLD AND WHY, HOW COULD YOU BE SO EASILY FLEECED, DANA, THIS ISNâT AN ED JERSE PARALLEL BECAUSE YOU THINK MULDER DOESNâT WANT YOU, THIS IS STUPID, THIS IS THIS IS THIS IS
WHAT.Â
I thought Scully had dated Tad OâMalley in the past (sometime after the breakup) but this is worsefarworse.Â
SVETA IS THE KEY TO EVERYTHING, IâM SO TIRED.Â
âMulder, where are you going?â sounds exactly like Scully, and now Iâm mad Gillian didnât use that voice for the rest of the show (voice recovery aside....)
I KNEW SKINNER WAS BEHIND GETTING THEM BACK. He just calls up Scully to call Mulder up, then just unlocks the old office when Mulder wants to get back in. 110% Skinner thought this would help his buddy Mulder. And heâs not wrong.Â
Wait.Â
Did Skinner put in more effort to save Mulder from his mental health struggles (per this My Struggle I episode) than Scully??????
Iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii-- my brain is broken.Â
The hold on Skinnerâs face while he says âCan you tell me what this is aboutâ was way too long.Â
Also, donât try to play coy with me, Skinman.Â
Now the cameraâs zooming around and losing its âX-Filesâ feel by being too⊠modern.Â
Skinner telling Mulder to calm down is the only time in canon where I agree with him. Mulderâs just spouting and demanding and not really making clear sense and this is why you don't let Mulder back into his basement without Scully by his side, Skinner-- donât you remember that lesson?
Skinner telling Mulder to calm down then saying he doesnât take orders from him only for Mulder to say âWho do you take orders from?â, ugh.
GUYS, THIS WAS RESOLVED IN SEASON. 2. BECAUSE MULDER KNEW MEN WERE BEHIND THE CONSPIRACY SINCE SEASON 1, EPISODE 2; AND SKINNER SINCE SEASON 2, EPISODE ASCENSION.
BECAUSE SKINNERâS ALREADY HAD HIS LOYALTY TESTED AND THIS IS HURTING MY BRAIN MAKE IT END.
Iâm not even 25 minutes into this, help.Â
âWhy do you think I called you? Because I was looking out for you, because Iâve always looked out for you.â Is⊠is Skinner the only character whoâs progressed? Thatâs exactly what he would do-- heâs acting sensibly, rationally, and in-character... and more mature, more veteran, than his agents.
I know the Revival is supposed to be âMulder and Scully all grown-upâ but none of their actions have been intelligent, measured, or informed by their age or life experience. Itâs a farce that I hope future episodes will rectify.Â
âA decade of my life--â Mulder rants and kicks his poster like a toddler AND YOU KNEW ALL THIS INFORMATION FROM SEASON 1, MULDER. NONE OF THIS IS NEW. WWWWWWWWWWWWWWHAT IS THIS.Â
I canât imagine how disappointed philes were when they tuned into this episode. Well... I can because of how I feel; but at least I knew, roughly, how bad it would be going in.Â
This is worse.Â
Skinner: âYouâre blaming me for that?â
Mulder: âNo, Iâm blaming myself. Iâm sure they lied to you, too.âÂ
This isnât a revelation, chump.Â
At least Skinner confirms my theory: âThere hasnât been a day since youâve left that I havenât reached for my phone to call you, Mulder, wishing you were still down here.âÂ
Feral Mulder is touched.Â
âSince 9/11--â OH NO, WHY ARE WE GOING THERE â--this countryâs taken a big turn and in a very strange direction.â
Guys. Guys. This isnât⊠this⊠what.Â
âNow they police us, spy on us, and tell us that makes it safer--â CAN THE WRITERS GET OFF A SOAP BOX FOR FIVE SECONDS. Of course it isnât safer to be unnecessarily policed or spied on, but the answer isn't just "boo, the government!" What⊠why⊠my brainâs melting, I feel it deteriorating.Â
This, again, feels so Bush-era. Like, whoever wrote this didnât update their mentality.Â
Also, the camera shots and cuts are weird. Holding too long, zooming out at âpause and take THAT inâ moments, focusing on Mulderâs phone while he silently calls up Skinner to prove a point⊠itâs supremely unsubtle.
Back to Tad, I donât care. You did this to yourself, Scully, cozying up only to be used as a name drop on his show. Stupid.Â
Is Scully gonna be shocked she has alien DNA? She shouldnât be.Â
But then again, Mulder shouldnât be shocked this has all been a work of men, so.Â
Sheâs expecting-- no, hoping-- for a call from somebody named Mulder.Â
Sure, theyâre broken up with hard feelings. Sure. Absolutely.Â
Is this old man Not-Obiwan Kenobi? Â
Of course.
At least Mulder seems old hat at this informant business.Â
But of course, heâs ânot even closeâ to putting it all together.Â
Stupid.Â
WAIT.
The countdown was WRONG-- Mulder states it began, not ended in 2012, meaning he's believed this theory for some time. Meaning... why was he so depressed after 2012? Why are there still depression concerns in 2015?? Seriously, what's with his depression if the 2012 Colonization was allegedly the cause of it but there is no Colonization and the clock's simply been reset????
WHY WAS HE DEPRESSED IF HE RECONFIGURED THE COUNTDOWN. WHAT.
Mulder: "Not by aliens, not with aliens, but by a conspiracy of men--"
âYouâre wasting my time.â Tell him, old man Not-Obiwan Kenobi!
âTen years ago, you came to me--â
Wait, ten years ago? What, 2005? The guy showed up while Mulder was on the run? And Scully never⊠knew about this?
There were no aliens lighting each other on fire??????????????????? WAIT, I NEVER HEARD THIS INFORMATION.Â
THERE WERE NEVER ALIENS, AT ALL???????????????????? Like, AT ALL?????Â
The writers are saying that Scully's experience on Ruskin Dam in Season 5 was not two warring alien factions BUT TWO GROUPS OF MEN LIGHTING EACH OTHER ON FIRE, OR GIVING EVERYONE FALSE MEMORIES OF ALIENS LIGHTING EACH OTHER ON FIRE, OR...??????
hONESTLY.Â
Let's be real specific for a second: Chris Carter expects us to believe that the ENTIRE mytharc from the original show was ALL faked; that there were no aliens, ZERO, ZILCH; and that CSM and Deep Throat and all the others created elaborate schemes JUST to manipulate MULDER because the aliens weren't a threat from the start????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? DONâT BELIEVE YOUR LYING EYES. THEY WERE ALL MEN IN SUITS.
Like⊠do you realize how stupid that is? How actually, unfathomably stupid that is? Itâs not just âthe aliens didnât invade because of global warming,â no, itâs âthey were never a problem to begin with, we just manipulated Mulder into believing they were because⊠because heâs so important, I GUESS.â
Roswellâs also a smokescreen, of course.Â
Yâknow how, during the 90s, DD thought The X-Files was a stupid sci-fi show? If he thought each mytharc plot was as bad as this one, no wonder he wanted to bail.Â
Oh, by the way, the global warming explanation is part of a theory: the fascist elites will dominate the world and escape from consequences into space, leading the rest of humanity to die by a globally warmed planet. The aliens weren't chased off by global warming because they were never a factor to begin with.
Wow.
I CAUGHT A CONTINUITY ERROR!
Scully shows up at his place in her uniform from yesterday, panicked, like sheâd just run from Tadâs side to see what happened despite her saying over a day has passed.
Going to ignore his âWhat are you doing here, Scully?â because weâve ping-ponged back to the out-of-character Mulder that the writers use when itâs time to remind everyone he and Scully are broken up.Â
Itâs IWTB all over again, Iâm so tired.Â
Theyâre talking past each other and heâs touching her shoulders now because he needs her to trust him and yadda yadda yadda.Â
Itâs soooo, sooooo, soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo highschool, Iâm sorry. This is Riverdale. This is [insert whatever teen series you want to watch.] These are teenagers masquerading as adults, for the angst.
None of this holds up, their emotions shift left and right without provocation, things just happen, and there is no strand of continuity stringing anything together.
Scully trying to talk Mulder down from further pursuit doesnât make sense because, AGAIN, sheâs the one who's always gone back to the files even when he walks away; and every time heâs given up, or wanted to, SHE'S called him back and held him accountable and kept him going.Â
This is the Scully from IWTB with no gumption of her own, who denies her leaps forward because of plot, plot, plot.Â
Guys, Iâve been religiously dosing myself with caffeine (via chocolate), but my body keeps trying to make me go to sleep because itâs so uninvested. I don't even need sleep.
âThis is my life, this is, this is everything I believe in--â HOW. MANY. TIMES. Has he said this before. WHEN HAS THAT LINE EVER WORKED ON SCULLY.
But that's beside the point: "this" was no longer his life after Amor Fati, by his own choice. Closure brought him closure, but he was already spittin' walk-away talk by Requiem, chose to leave in Vienen, and insisted Scully stay gone in Alone. In Season 9, it was Scully who had to beg him into hiding to pursue the Truth or whatever; and it was Scully who brought him the case in IWTB and Scully who relayed Skinner's request and tagged along both times until she got uncomfy and decided never mind, too hard.
Yâknow? This claim gets to me because itâs a lie. A lie so blatant that 90s Mulder would have thrown hands over it, a lie so baseless that it erases his declaration in the hallway:
âI donât know if I want to do this alone. I donât even know if I can.â And every time Mulder yells his âTHIS IS MY LIFEâ, he erases that part of his past, the part that willingly left the files or the big Truth or the next chase to save Scullyâs life or to keep her by his side.Â
Chris Carter said Mulder and Scully were The X-Files post The Truth⊠but I guess he keeps conveniently forgetting that. More accurately, he keeps making MULDER forget that, in spite of all evidence in Mulderâs history and personality to the contrary.Â
It infuriates me.Â
âTad OâMalley is a charming man--â get outta here.Â
Now Scullyâs been played the fool so sheâs going to think Mulderâs being toyed around with by a social media sociopath. Youâre an idiot, Scully.Â
Youâre an idiot, Mulder.Â
You expect us to be idiots, writers.Â
Hereâs some ham-fisted âFateâ dialogue for you, *ahem*:
Scully: âHow do you know heâs not playing you, heâs a player!â (You would know, Scully.)Â
Mulder: âHeâs a Godsend!â
Mulderâs not a believer in God, BUT this is also supposed to refer to the God conversation Scully and Tad had in the hospital, which will inadvertently make Scully ~believe~ again.
âWhat are you talking about?â Iâm with ya there, Scully. Iâm with ya, there.Â
Scullyâs trying to insist Mulder's on a verge of a breakdown, which⊠UGH.Â
This scene implies Mulder hasnât had a breakdown or a break from reality YET-- Scully spends the episode constantly concerned for his health and begging him, here, to watch what where he's stepping because heâs on the verge of spiraling.Â
Which means he hasn't spiraled, because she's afraid of what would happen to him IF he did.
MEANING that there wasnât an inciting factor that made her leave: no alcoholism, no outbursts, no nothing. He just became depressed, probably withdrawn, and wouldnât change; so, she left.Â
Do you realize what that means, per this episode? It means Scully ANTICIPATED a breakdown and left BEFORE it happened. Then hoped heâd get better before it did.Â
Which breaks the established morals of her character. If she had been able to help, she would have stayed. If she hadnât been able to help, she would have found another way to help him, even if it involved calling in a third party against his will. Instead, she withdrew and hoped he would get better BEFORE he reached a breaking point-- essentially, leaving him to an impending breakdown while hoping and praying against it.
This makes her decision to leave a mark of weak character-- not because she was a woman who left her depressed husband, but because Dana Scully, whose character we amply know, left. It checks none of the boxes she'd have to clear first before choosing to take one step out the door.
All the fic Iâve read to justify their breakup-- and make no mistake, CC wrote her to say âas your friendâ intentionally--Â or time apart or whathaveyou had Scully reach a breaking point. Because, of course! That's logical. But here, in canon-- in black and white-- that didnât happen.Â
We, the audience, have to create a plausible scenario in our minds to justify the steps she took. Because. it. Is. not. In. canon (as per this episode.)Â
Now Scullyâs gonna get jealous of Sveta, Iâm so done. Riverdale, uuuuuuuuugh.Â
Mulder just lets Scully walk away because Scully thinks he wants Sveta but âSveta is the key to everythingâ and if Scully wants to misunderstand that she should have more trust in him, I guess, and I NEED A RESPIRATOR.
He just says âScullyâ once and lets her huff off. Â
TADâS BACK, GO AWAY.Â
WAIT, TAD STOPS HER BEFORE SHE LEAVES.Â
Mulder: âI would have invited you, Scully, but I didnât think you would come.âÂ
ThatâsâŠ
ThatâsâŠ.
Letâs break down this stupidity:Â
Scully shows up.Â
Mulder had Sveta in the house because he was calling her and O'Malley for a group meeting.Â
When Scully becomes nearly hysterical over his safety, he doesnât reason with her, just spouts like a lunatic.Â
When she misreads the Sveta situation and stomps off, he lets her go with a weak, âScully"--
--because he knew Tad was right behind her and was pulling in to stop her from leaving.Â
Because Tad and Sveta were invited but Scully was not.Â
And Scully was not invited because. Â
Because she might not show up.Â
Iâm just preaching to the choir at this point, continuing on.Â
Scully gave in, just like that. Guess sheâs not leaving, anymore.Â
Sheâs so, so⊠spineless. Has been since Season 9, has been a BIT since Season 8 (though that was at least justified and kept to a bare minimum.)Â
Iâm just. So sick of passive Scully.Â
I HATE THOSE STINGER NOISES NOW.Â
Itâs always, âYou can't let this information out because these men work in secrecyâ/âWhat is it?â/âYouâll seeâ; then stinger; then we, the audience, are immediately shown what it is.
No suspenseful build-up.
Tad: âThen why are you [Scully] here?â/âScully: âMulder, what are you up to?â/Mulder: *knowing look*/stinger/next scene.
KNOCK IT OFF ALREADY.
âImplanting of alien embryosâ-- so Svetaâs babies werenât her babies.Â
So Scullyâs baby wasnât her baby.Â
But Emily was her baby but William isnât.Â
Sure, Jan.Â
In spite of this information, the Revival will paint William as their son until it doesnât; despite, again, stating from day one that the alien babies are implanted embryos and not biological babies.
So, these two boneheads should have suspected that William wasnât theirs, anyway.Â
Even though William is theirs because the CSM timeline doesnât add up, which they would have mathed in their heads by the time little William was snuggled in their arms.Â
Itâs all so stupid.Â
Why does this feel so fearmongery about the government? And Iâm not going to sit here and say the government should be trusted-- it has a VERY bad history, I'm aware. But this is âmy first conspiracyâ level of worldbuilding. Â
Did the writers think it was clever to set OâMalley up as a bad actor then reveal he was a good actor, modeling him after the notorious Alex Jones only to point and jeer, âHAH, you assumed! Heâs actually on Mulderâs side!âÂ
Because thatâs not genius, thatâs laziness.Â
Scully only now decides to inform everyone Sveta has no evidence of alien DNA? So, what, she was never going to tell them unless Mulder kept being, what, crazy?Â
âThey got to her,â says Mulder about Sveta, but Scully LITERALLY SAID she had no alien DNA, so what was Sveta supposed to believe???????? That Tad O'Malley wasn't using her for as a hoax???
Mulder ran all the way to her house, or ubered then ran, or whatever⊠and sheâs gone, of course.Â
Poor Sveta.Â
Tad OâMalleyâs Truth Site is gone, oh, noooooo.Â
Look, Iâll always be against censorship. But this is sending so many odd and mixed signals that itâs creating craaaaaaaaaaaaazy levels of dissonance.Â
Mulder wrote âDonât Give Upâ in Scully's car dustâŠ.Â
Riverdale.Â
Mulder presents the global warming = no aliens theory?Â
Iâm so tired.Â
WAIT, SCULLY BELIEVES MULDER'S THEORY NOW THAT HER BOY TADâS BEEN PULLED OFF THE NETWORK.Â
âWe need to find her [Sveta], Mulder,â Scully insists.Â
Hold on, prediction time: Scully only changed her mind because this case now involves her-- i.e. only extending empathy to Christian (a boy that reminded her of William) and not to the string of missing, possibly murdered, women in IWTB.
OF COURSE. Her results for Sveta ended up being wrong AND HER OWN GENOME HAS ALIEN DNA IN IT, TOO.Â
You selfish, self-centered clone of Dana Scully.Â
Scully truly hasnât recovered sinceïżœïżœ Season 9, letâs be real, where she told Mulder to leave then spent the whole year crying over his absence. In IWTB, she brought Mulder a case then left him when he wouldnât stop his pursuit (to SAVE. LIVES.) And in the Revival, she called Mulder and the gang crazy until her own genome showed alien DNA.Â
Hate this, hate this, HATE this.Â
Also, yeah, she already knew she had alien DNA in the OG series, moving on.
Oh, and now they get a call from Skinner just when Scully says someone has to stop the bad guys.Â
OF COURSE.Â
Remember the God convo from earlier, guys???? GOD. FATE. SOMETHINGSOMETHINGSOMETHING.Â
You had ONE good idea to explore-- how Scully views God vs. the aberrations of biology-- and then just... used it as a convenient club to beat in the âGod/Fate means for us to do thisâ instead.Â
âScully, are you ready for this?â
âI donât know thereâs a choice.âÂ
Canât someone PLEASE just explore her faith with nuance? PLEASE?Â
Sveta's DEAD???????? IâM SO MAD, I liked her!
YOU FAILED HER, SCULLY.Â
YOU FAILED MULDER, SCULLY.Â
WHY DOES SCULLY HAVE TO KEEP FAILING PEOPLE????????????Â
Skipping the CSM scene because I donât care, the END.Â
CONCLUSION
How does Scullyâs mischaracterization keep reaching new lows?Â
How does Mulder become less wise with age?Â
How is Skinner the only mentally mature character here?
Iâm so tired.

ÂÂÂThings about Ron Speirs that live rent free in my head
-âSPEIRS, GET YOURSELF OVER HERE!â
I donât know what I like most about this scene. The fact Dick just furiously passed Sink and ignored his commander, because his boys were getting screwed? Speirs running to him and then without a single word sprinting to do the job? Or Nixon with his binoculars liveblogging the whole battle? ÂŻ\_(ă)_/ÂŻ
-The change in his voice and intonation between âIâm taking overâ and âFirst Sergeant Lipton!â.
-The church scene, when Lipton says Easy men didnât care about the gossips⊠It was HILARIOUS. Like, Lip? Sweetheart? Ron scared the shit out of Christenson and some poor innocent kids in the same damned ep. I could hear Patâs sobbing in the background during that scene, mixed with the nunsâ chorus.
-A man needs a hobby and his was trolling people. Aside of the whole âdid he or did he not shot the prisonersâ, he enjoyed the gossips, appearing suddenly out of nowhere, while giving creepy speeches and traumatizing people. And he did it fabulously. Legend.
-His little, millisecond pause, when we watch his back while Lipton says âWell, maybe they keep talking about it because they never heard Tercius deny itâ.
-And two things about this scene. Lipton knows Speirs was trolling people and it was amusing him. And Ronâs answer âWell, maybe thatâs because Tercius knew there was some value to the men thinking he was the meanest, toughest sonofabitch in the whole Roman legionâ - he knows Lip knows he was trolling people and (not directly) admits it. He never did that to anyone else, what also means he really respected Lipton (gross sobbing).
-Anyway, this whole church scene is a pure love and I adore every second of it.
-He was a history nerd ;_; Iâm kind of sad, we didnât see him and Buck taking about some ancient battles in Gaul.
-He kept tabs on Easy xD how much heâs learnt from creeping in the shadows and eavesdropping â no one knows xD
-The fact real Speirs was shot in the ass on some of his solo patrols proves he was just meant to be Easyâs CO. Fucking destiny.
-His favourite sergeant was Grant (ok, ok, put the pitchforks DOWN, I said sergeant NOT lieutenant, geez).
-The fact no one called him âSparkyâ in the show is a crime against humanity. But at least we got one âRonâ from Winters. StillâŠ
-I think I read somewhere here, that he wore his helmet so low, because it was too big and⊠yes? Absolutely? Whoever noticed it â I bow to you.
And it reminds me all the promo pics where we have most of the characters standing together and he stands on the side, a little farer and looking awkwardly like âmom said I have to socialize more, so here I am, ughâŠâ.
-Also, he looks tiny compared to the other guys on many shots/pics, what is hilarious on many levels.
-I realized it after the second watch, that he not only stole cigarettes from Buck, but he offered them to the German POWs. Not his cigarettes, but the shit he stole. I donât know why, but itâs just so super HIM xD
-I wonder when exactly Easy Company did realize that their new CO is not exactly the meanest, toughest sonofabitch in the army, but a big ass weirdo, with poor social skills, suspicious hobbies and sticky hands.
-Ep 8 look >>>>>>>>>>>>> everything else.
-The moment when Webster throws himself to the ground and Ron just stands in the background, watching the missile like it was meh (he had a personal ranking of âThings that almost killed meâ and that missile was not even on the Top 10).
-âNo. You donât have any experience.â How the fuck Jones didnât drop dead right after is beyond me. Also, A+++ acting.
-The fact is that Lipton was his social-skills-only-working-brain-cell and itâs beautiful.
-The moment Perconte asked him to give him back his lighter, I guess it was the moment Speirs knew his reputation crumbled to dust xD
-Unpopular opinion, but I donât think Malarkey scared him on a purpose. I think it was accidentally, what for me, makes it even funnier. But the fact Don started as someone who was scared of Speirs like no one else and ended scarring him â it just warms my heart.
-And that pure annoyance on Ronâs face when Malarkeyâs approaches him a second after he scared him, will never stop making me laugh. It the look could kill the bottle in Donâs hands would explode.
-On some point Lipton was sitting with his head in his hands and moaning that he was not paid enough to keep his crazy CO with suicidal tendencies alive and Luz was there-thereing him.
-All the things he's done to keep Grant alive.
-Basically, Speirs gives me a stray cat vibes and the fact he kind of, adopted Lipton and whole Easy proves it.
-And finally, the way he went from âwe are all dead, just accept itâ to âok, I guess Iâm going to stay in the army to keep the idiots alive (sighs)â is one of the best character developments and is so⊠sooo ⊠you know? ;_;
Anyway, the thing I like the most about his character is how unexpected he is. I didnât expect to like him so much. I didnât expect him to change so much in such splendid way. But here I am.
We meet him in the show as  âa cold blooded soldierâ stereotype and we learn in the end he was just deeply compassionate man (and a weirdo), who applied being a sociopath to be a better man of war. It just makes him very human - thanks to the fact his character was based on a real man, I guess. And that applies to all BOBâs characters.
And BIG kudos to Matthew Settle for doing such a great job and creating an iconic character. I read and watched some interviews, where he admitted he had a big problems with grasping the role, but damn, in the end he absolutely NAILED IT.

Maniac | König x M!Reader | Part I

I managed to survive my first exam so take this as a treat, I split it into two parts because itâs 9k Yes, instead of studying for my next exams I wrote this. Also, I canât fucking write fight scenes what the hell like people get thrown around in this story like they weigh nothing, Iâm sorry lmao. Also, this is not corrected and I feel like itâs all over the place but oh well. I suck at code names. Translation of the few words in different languages are at the bottom.

Part II
Listen...Â
Heâs a soldier. He dealt with some shit. Trauma and other stuff, you name it. But this actually helps him, at least usually. Heâs observant and quickly sees through peopleâs intentions because heâs always watching.Â
But thereâs just this one guy. This one man in KorTac who throws him off his game. Sergeant Y/N L/N.
When König first met him, Horangi pointed him out with an âUh oh, he is here. Iâm gonna go on the toilet real quick-â and poof, he left him alone in the cafeteria, completely flabbergasted.Â
The man Horangi had meant was standing before Conor, holding a strange combat knife as if he was about to attack the Irishman.Â
König had never seen him before but the KorTac logo on his black shirt implied that he was one of them.
âCome on, Conny, itâs been so longâ, the soldier goaded while smiling.
To König that expression had been unsettling.
But it wasnât just that, it was his whole appearance. The all-black attire is in contrast with the landscape of pale scars on the manâs arms and his face and the dark circles under his e/c eyes. And the posture seemed casual and relaxed but Königâs fighter instinct told otherwise.
If the Austrian came across him in an abandoned alley, he would be on high alert.Â
Even during that moment, witnessing whatever the hell was going on between him and Conor, Königâs body had tensed. And the other people in the cafeteria seemed to share his discomfort based on the murmurs going around and all the eyes on the two of them.
Additionally, König knew that Declan had a past reputation for physical altercations, and based on the growing vein on his forehead, it was likely that a fight would break out if no one stopped the KorTac operator.
He didnât understand what the guy tried to achieve. Was he provoking Conor on purpose? To fight in the middle of the mess hall??
The look in the manâs eyes and the sharp blade in his hand werenât implying some friendly sparring though...
Thankfully, Stiletto who had been watching with Calisto walked up to them before anything could happen. The badass she was, she grabbed the soldier by the biceps without any hesitation, diverting his focus.Â
âAtom, Majka will be on your ass again if you cause another disturbance so soon after your returnâ, she warned him, her voice sharp.Â
The man looked at her hand on his arm, then at her eyes. She didnât let go.
For a second, König expected Atom to lash out but to his relief, he just held up both of his hands in defeat. He even smiled apologetically.
âYouâre right, we canât have that. Sorry, sorry. My bad, Conor.â
The Irishman showed him the middle finger.Â
âPlease eat shit and die, Y/N.â
âAwe, come on man. Donât be so hard on me, I just missed our little fights. It was always so entertaining, even though you lost all the time!âÂ
âYou can spar in the gym during PT, not here. Put that damn knife away, putainâ Calisto interceded before Conor could explode.Â
Y/N huffed and Salvatrice let go of his arm. He was about to sheathe his knife when his eyes landed on König and they made eye contact.
Something sparked in the e/c eyes and uh oh was all the Austrian could think before the h/c haired man walked over to him, his combat knife still in his hand, smiling widely.
âWho do we have here... Are you new? Iâve never seen you before!â Atom exclaimed, a glint of something in his eyes that König couldnât quite name.Â
The fact that the operator stopped barely a few inches away from him made him feel slightly uncomfortable. Those eyes bore into him and although the man was a head and a half smaller than him, König felt somewhat intimidated.
âWhy are you wearing a shirt on your head?â
âIâm-â he began, taking a step back to gain some distance but Y/N followed him until a hand suddenly blocked him off. Horangi had returned.
âHeâs König, our new addition to Strazar-1. Atom, can you just let us eat dinner? Weâre starving.â
âIâm Sergeant Y/N L/N, but you can call me Atom. König means king in German right?âÂ
Y/N completely ignored the Korean, still holding eye contact with the tall Austrian. He just nodded.Â
At this point, there were many eyes on him and he still was a little jittery because they arrived at the base only a few days ago and the local soldiers stared whenever they saw his height and his mask. It made his social anxiety flare up.
âIâm really fucking hungry, manâ, Horangi said again, this time stepping in front of König who backed up, thankful to gain some distance.Â
âThen go eat. I want to talk to our friendly giant here.â
Atomâs tone was almost aggressive now. He twirled the knife in his hand, a small smile on his lips as he stared down at Horangi. It didnât reach his eyes though, they were cold. Fuck off, his expression said.
âIâm actually hungry tooâ, König says, not wanting to continue this very uncomfortable conversation with this weird guy. Der hat eine an der Waffel, dem geh ich besser aus dem Weg he thought.
âOh, we can eat together then!â
Y/N was about to turn around and walk to grab a tray when they heard their team leader shout: âAtom, get your ass in my office now!âÂ
The sergeant swiveled around, saluting Majka who appeared out of nowhere at the mess hall entrance with crossed arms in front of his chest.Â
âJebote, put that fucking knife away and follow me.âÂ
Majka turned to leave and the soldier clicked his tongue in annoyance but he did as ordered and followed him without dilly-dallying.
König could hear the RS team leader growl You really need to stop swinging that around like itâs your dick when they both left the cafeteria and walked down the hallway.
Horangi turned to him, taking his sunglasses off and massaging his forehead.
âI shouldâve known. Youâre too tall for your own good, man. Heâll be after you.â
König stared down at him with a frown, not that his friend could see.
âWhat do you mean??â
Stiletto and Calisto joined them, the two women looking at him with a resemblance of pity.Â
âThat mec is crazy, König.â
The Italian woman nodded. âIt was so peaceful when he was awayâ, she sighed.
Horangi added:Â âYeah. I hope the higher-ups put his ass on another secret mission soon, I donât want to watch my back 24/7 again.â
König stared at them slowly understanding that Atom seemed to have a pretty bad reputation. But was that really deserved?Â
Calisto patted his arm. âMake sure to carry a tactical knife with you wherever you go.â Her tone was dead serious.Â
He looked at her and then at the other two. They nodded.
âAre you saying heâll try to hurt me?â, he asked, his expression a mix of surprise and worry.Â
He wasnât quite sure whether he should believe them. After all, Y/N was in KorTac just like them. They wouldnât just let a crazy guy work in a PMC right?Â
âHe wonât kill youâ, Stiletto said, turning around to go grab a tray to eat, âbut if you donât watch yourself he might poke you a bit with his Atom Splitter.âÂ
He tilted his head confused.
âHis knifeâ, Horangi helpfully provided, as they followed Stilettoâs lead, each grabbing a tray and some cutlery to get some food.
âYouâre messing with me, arenât you?â he asked. They loved to play pranks on him.
âYouâll see, big boy.â
And oh, he really did.
-
At first, it was unnerving. Getting jumped whenever he wasnât looking. He blinked once and before him suddenly stood a grinning Atom, his curved combat knife in hand, ready to strike.Â
After the first time getting caught without a weapon and being slammed to the ground, blade held against his throat - Atomâs face with that unsettling grin barely a few inches away from him - he followed Calistoâs advice and brought a knife with him wherever he went.Â
Not that he used it to injure the other operator.Â
Atom hadnât really hurt him either in all the fights they had, at least not with the knife. They threw some punches and did some tackling and throws but they never drew blood. This was one of the reasons why König eventually got used to the fighting, even if they always ended with the sharp metal against his throat and he was sore for days after it.
In the beginning, he was anxious that the guy would switch up and one day just drag the blade across his jugular but he never did. Not once did he slice Königâs skin, not even by accident.Â
Atomâs control over his knife was something he had never seen before.Â
His fighting skills were on another level and although the Austrian considered himself an expert in hand-to-hand combat, he knew that he could learn a lot from the sergeant and their fights. When he realized this, his opinion about the attacks turned from unsettling fights into sparring.
Atom actually called it training and König began to agree.Â
Even though the h/c haired man attacked him with true killing intent every time. But maybe that was what actually helped him.
It kept him on his toes, his senses sharp.Â
And yeah it was a little weird that Y/N targeted him at all times of the day - he had literally attacked him in his sleep once on a mission - and that he always had a wide-eyed grin on his lips when they fought but hey, it drastically improved Königâs skills and instincts.Â
And after some time he began to even enjoy their little dances. Severely actually. Especially after he won for the first time.Â
That moment when their positions had reversed - Königâs blade to Atomâs throat for once, his knee digging into his chest to keep him on the ground - he felt an adrenaline rush he never experienced before and it left him feeling what he could only call giddy.Â
It was 5am, most of the base was still fairly quiet and Y/N had surprised him in the gym room right when König wanted to go and change his clothes for a morning session.
The sergeant didnât say anything, just swung his knife and König reacted in the nick of time, having felt something was off. He grabbed his combat knife and they exchanged blows and when Atom extended his arm a bit too far for once, the Austrian took the chance and grabbed him, twisting his body to throw him over his shoulder.
In an instant, he was on top of him, holding a dazed Y/N down with one hand, pressing the blade against his Adamâs apple with the other.
âYou got meâ, Atom grunted, panting slightly from the exertion of their exchange, his pupils blown wide and once again that familiar grin on his lips. And König returned it under his mask.
âFuck yeah, I got youâ, he said still catching his breath, emphasising a bit of pressure on the blade, not enough to cut the sergeantâs skin but enough for him to feel it.
âThatâs 22 to one. Still got a lot to learn, big boy.âÂ
König rolled his eyes and sheathed his knife. He held his hand out for Atom to take and to his surprise, the h/c haired man actually did. He stood up with his help but without letting himself be pulled.Â
âWell, you better be prepared.â
Y/N snorted, something flitted across his face. His smile widened even more.
âYeah, yeah, weâll see.âÂ
He picked up his Atom Splitter where he had dropped it and then turned to walk out of the room, whistling a tune. And so he was off to god knows where, like always.
The Austrian watched him disappear through the doorway and a breathy laugh escaped him. He shook his head somehow amused. How the hell did I reach this point?Â
It was so strange to feel enjoyment after another of their exhausting fights. But he truly did enjoy it. The sweet taste of victory.
For a moment he let their sparring replay in his head. He was unsure whether it was just luck or if he actually overpowered Atom. His thoughts returned to the man lying under him, grinning, the e/c of his eyes almost impossible to see with his blown pupils.Â
Something stirred in his chest.
He breathed out loudly and then went to go shower, trying to get that image out of his head.
-
A few months pass and one day when König has just returned after an operation in Al Mazrah, heâs on his way to the barracks after showering when he meets Horangi, Zeus, and Conor, the latter clearly agitated.Â
âI hope he takes a fuckin dirt nap on his next op!â
âRelax, Declan, it looked like he was actually trying to help this timeâ, Zeus said, handing the Irishman a cool pack. The redhead put it on his nose which looked swollen.Â
âHelp?! The fecker canât even-â Horangi interrupted Conorâs tirade with a âKönig, hey! Youâre back!âÂ
He greeted them with a wave. âWhat happened?â, he asked motioning at Declan, pressing the cool pack against his face.Â
âThat nut job Atom-â he begins but Horangi interrupts him once more:Â
âThe marines are causing some trouble. Apparently, weâre overstaying our welcome, thereâs a lot of tension, and Majka and Ridgeback are discussing things with the higher-ups for us to move to another base. Atom... isnât really helping with the tension...â
âThe cunt pulled his knife on one of their new captains!â
âHe probably missed youâ, Zeus jokingly adds, addressing the fact that the KorTac operator with his madman reputation hasnât targeted anyone else but König since they started sparring together.Â
The Austrian snorts, the thought wouldâve never crossed his mind.Â
But a few hours later after he parted ways with the three, the door to the room he shares with the other male KorTac operators gets thrown open with a loud bang and lo and behold; Y/N stands in the doorframe, in his hand his trusty Atom Splitter.
His heartbeat immediately picks up in anticipation.
The sergeant looks somewhat different. The dark circles under his eyes appear to be even darker than usual and he even has some stubble as if he hasnât shaved in a few days.
Atomâs expression is unreadable until his eyes find König, sitting on his bunkbed at the far end of the room.Â
âThere you are!â he says joyfully and rushes over, reaching him with just a few strides.Â
He stops, looming over König whoâs still sitting on the bed. Their legs touch, heâs standing so close. König puts the book in his hands away, trying to appear casual and he looks up to him.
âAtom.â
âKönig.â
For a minute they just stare into each otherâs eyes. The silence feels awkward, something is simmering in the air and Königâs grip on his switchblade under his pillow turns sweaty. His chest flutters, a nervousness he knows only too well. He can feel heat radiate from where their legs touch.
Y/Nâs look is different than usual. He seems to consider something.
âYou...â, he begins, the sergeantâs eyes trailing to his backpack on the floor that he hasnât unpacked yet, âhad fun on the mission?â
König blinks, the sudden question throwing him off.Â
He was expecting a knife aiming at his chest, not a small talk question. They never do small talk. He canât even remember if Atom ever asked him a question after they first met that day in the cafeteria.Â
They talk smack. But they donât talk about their personal life or time or their favorite color. König only knows Atomâs age because Zeus told him heâs older by two years.
âI- uh... well, not reallyâ, he says after the initial surprise wears off. Al Mazrah was just sweat, dirt, and not enough sleep.
Y/N nodded slowly, humming in acknowledgment.Â
âIt wasnât fun here eitherâ, he says light-heartedly while looking towards the door and casually twirling his knife in his hand but something in his posture tells König that Atom is not feeling relaxed at all. Rather he seems tense.
âWhyâs that?â, he asks with an almost soft voice. He looks up at him.
The man remains quiet. König remembers Horangiâs words about the marines and although heâs curious, he doesnât want to prod, and based on the sudden halt of Atomâs knife twirling, they wonât talk in the next few minutes anyways.
âDoesnât matterâ, Y/N starts, his signature grin forming on his lips, âYou know why Iâm here.â
He steps away from him, bowing mockingly. König rolls his eyes, seeing this as his cue to stand up. He pulls his knife from under the pillow, activates the blade, and stands tall, now towering over Atom.
âSince when do you announce your intentions?â, he asks, slight amusement can be heard in his voice.Â
âJust today, since I missed youâ, Y/N replies and the Austrian canât even be surprised that Zeus was actually right or question the flutter in his chest because in the next second Atom Splitter is aimed at his chest and he blocks the knife in the nick of time.Â
Their dance begins. But somethingâs different this time. The h/c haired man isnât showing any killing intent at all while he attacks. It throws him off his game a bit.
Additionally, König quickly realizes that the barracks arenât a good place for him to fight, the space between the bunkbeds isnât that big and his size makes it hard for him to move his body effectively.Â
He retreats towards the door, luring Atom towards the front of the room where thereâs more space. Y/N follows him eagerly, taking the chance to stab at him with a knowing look on his face.Â
The Austrian isnât sure if itâs his own exhaustion after the op or if Y/N got some Dragon Ball power-up during their time apart but he understands that, unlike their last fights, Atom is not taking him seriously, instead heâs teasing him. And somehow it annoys him.Â
The sergeant throws a glove from Hutchâs bed at him and he ducks, when a sock follows, blocking his eyes for a second. He receives a kick to his thigh as a reward.
âNo fighting dirty!â he protests, knowing full well that Y/N is just trying to agitate him like he often does.Â
âTell that to all the hostiles out there!â Atom responds, grinning, dodging Königâs knife effortlessly. The giant snorts.
âThey wouldnât throw a goddamn sock at me!â
He blocks the Atom Splitter, a few inches away from his throat.Â
âBased on the smell, it could be considered a biological weapon, so yeah, they wouldâ, the sergeant responds, laughing, blocking the otherâs fist.
König rolls his eyes, cursing when he gets kicked again at the same place. Y/N dives low and picks up Hutchâs sock again attempting to throw it once more, grinning.
Oh no, you donât!
König seizes his knife arm and he flips Atom onto the ground in one swift motion, holding his arms down with his legs on each side of his torso, pressing his knife against the sergeantâs throat.
âGot youâ, he pants, knowing that Y/N probably let it happen. But it doesnât matter. His knife reached his collar first. In their usual terms, itâs his win.
The h/c haired man lifts his hips in a fake attempt at throwing him off while grinning widely, the knife digging into his skin, almost drawing blood. "Come on König, we just started..."
âYouâre crazyâ, the Austrian says, shaking his head, smiling weakly under his mask, âhave you ever considered therapy?â
The h/c haired man laughs an amused look on his face. âFighting is my therapy.â
âYou could use a punching bag then.â
Atom shakes his head and replies:Â âWhy should I? Iâm having so much fun when sparring with you. I can let go of all my pent-up stress.â
König can see that he means it, thereâs a glow in the e/c eyes. He looks rejuvenated. So ein komischer Kerl.
âWhy not let off some steam elsewhere?â, he begins, a thought forming in his head when he realizes that they havenât competed against each other in anything besides sparring.Â
Y/N stares at him with a surprised expression but he quickly smiles, intrigued.
âOh? What do you suggest?â, he asks, lifting his head to lean closer, his voice suddenly deeper.Â
König retracts his knife and stands up, deactivating the switchblade.
âHow about- and hear me out - an obstacle course? Winner gets to boast about it to the others and loser will take his guard shifts for the next two weeks? Sound good?â
Atom wrinkles his nose, clearly not interested. He sits up, propping up his arm on his knee, twirling his knife. He clicks his tongue in disappointment.
âIâm good thanks.â
König holds out his hand and he grabs it, standing up swiftly. Instead of letting go, the Austrian keeps holding on, staring down at Y/N.
âAre you scared? What - youâre only confident in putting a knife against someone's throat? Makes you feel tough?â, he provokes him, grinning underneath his mask.
Heâs feeling daring today after having won that fight and seeing Atom so playful.
The sergeant looks up at him, narrowing his eyes.
âYouâre misunderstandingâ, he begins, pulling his hand away with force, âI get excited when a knife is against someoneâs throat. Try riling up Horangi with these remarks, he cares about stupid contests like that.â He sighs dramatically. âThis got boring real quick.â
He dusts off his shirt and König crosses his arms over his chest.
âSo youâre calling me a bore?â, he asks acting offended.
âHere I was thinking youâre having the time of your life when fighting me.â
He made a swiping motion over his mask as if wiping away a tear. âOkay then, letâs make this exciting again.â
König activates his switchblade once more, lazily holding it against Y/Nâs throat. He tilts his head as if asking: you good now?
Atom just looks up at him, his brows knitted, somewhat annoyed.Â
âDonât tease me, Königâ, he grunts, âYou canât handle the consequences.â
The Austrian ignores his warning and he smirks:Â âWhat's the matter, sarge? Getting excited?â
Atom harshly grabs him by the collar, pulling him down, while simultaneously snatching his mask, lifting it against his eyes, covering them with the fabric.Â
âWha-â, he begins but gets silenced by the sudden pressure on his lips and the taste of coffee.Â
It isnât a kiss, itâs more like Atom is trying to bite him.Â
Königâs subconscious reaction is to shove him away, but Y/Nâs grip on his collar is tight.Â
After a few seconds, the sergeant lets go and retreats and König automatically gasps for air, utterly shocked about Y/Nâs action.Â
"What the hell are you doing-?!â, he asks, staring at the man who just smiles, his e/c eyes dark.Â
He looks down at Königâs knife and then touches his throat, wiping his thumb across it and then he licks it while holding eye contact with him.
âDonât bite off more than you can chew, König.â
And then Y/N turns and walks through the open door. He disappears. Just like that, leaving the flabbergasted Austrian alone in the room, breathing heavily.
What the fuck?? Is his only thought. What the absolute fuck?!Â
Did that really just happen? He stares at his hands, heâs still holding the knife. The blade is slightly red.Â
He cut him.Â
König is the first one to actually draw blood.Â
Oh, mein Gott. He couldâve killed him. Had he actually pushed him, he couldâve-
No matter the absolute loop the kiss is throwing him into, heâs more concerned about Atomâs well-being and without thinking any further he hurries out of the room trying to follow wherever Y/N couldâve gone.Â
In the hallway, he passes a marine who looks at him strangely for running so fast.Â
König reaches the end of the corridor where it parts into two ways. He goes left.
In the end, he doesnât find Y/N and instead meets Stiletto and Roze who stop their conversation immediately when they see him turn around the corner, frantically looking around.
âKönig? You good?â Roze asks. He shakes his head. âHave you seen Atom?â
Stiletto lifts an eyebrow. âNo? Why?â
He uses his mask to wipe the building anxiety sweat from his face. âI injured him, in a- a fight. Heâs bleeding.â
The two women look at each other, theyâre clearly taken aback by the concern in his voice.Â
âMaybe he went to the infirmary?â, they suggest and he nods. Yeah, that makes sense. Before they can add anything else, heâs off.
A few minutes later he reaches the infirmary where their medic is currently stationed.Â
âVic, did Atom pass by?â he asks when bursting into the room. Sheâs eating an apple and continues scribbling something in a file, completely unfazed by his dramatic entrance.
âNopeâ, she says, popping the p.Â
âI accidentally cut his throatâ, he explains.Â
She hums in annoyance. âI didnât ask- you cut his throat?â The woman looks up, lifting an eyebrow at him with a deadpan expression.
âShallowly- I think. I wanted to know if he came to take care of it.â
She takes off her glasses and kneads the bridge of her nose. âNo, he didnât. You sure it was shallow?â
He nods slowly. âThere isnât much blood on my knife.â He holds it up to her, activating the blade. She looks at him, then the knife, and then back at him, before sighing.Â
âKönig, get the fuck out of here.â
âCan you tell me if he-â
 âNow!â
She points at the door. He walks out without protesting and softly closes the door behind him.
In the hallway, he just stands there for a minute.Â
The last ten minutes feel like a fever dream. His mind is blank as he stares at the mental health awareness poster on the opposite wall, the only questions in his mind why did he kiss me? and did I really like it?

Bullet for My Valentine (Part I)
A/N: Hi my little darings, well as promised (a bit late, I know...) here's one fic of the ones I wrote as a thank you, to all of you who helped my friend by liking their little FB post, and even if you didn't have the chance to support them, I hope you enjoy this little piece. This has been in my WIPS for ages. Let me know what you think!
Lena Luthor x R/John Wick AU //Word Count:2,759Â
-------------------------------------------------------
Lena's lunch time started with a bang.
She didn't think too much of it at first as she was sitting at her desk and about to enjoy her food. But then another couple of bangs followed and she knew it hadn't been just loud sounds. She called Jess immediately but even her amazing assistant was unaware of what was happening.
"I don't know, Miss Luthor, I'm trying to call security but it seems-" A louder bang interrupted Jess, and she yelped in response.
"Jess!" Lena called, but she could hear nothing on the other side.
She left the phone, making a run for her purse, which she had left on the couch of her office. Inside, she recalled with regret, she had left the watch Supergirl had given her in case of emergency, and this one was very much it. Lena reached her it and rummaged frantically on her bag until she found the watch, but her office doors burst open before she could press the button.
You had kicked them open, keeping your gun raised as you entered and pointed at each corner of the room until your eyes found her.
"Don't move." You ordered, keeping your eyes on her to take in every single detail available to you. You noticed the watch and quickly understood what she was trying to do. You cursed mentally as you tried to catch your breath.
This wasn't how you had planned your day.
It had started as a quiet morning. You had been sitting in the kitchen table of your apartment, sipping from your cup while you read the newspaper.
The headlines praised the Girl of Steel once more, for keeping National City safe after fighting another group of rouge aliens and for helping locate several warehouses that participated in shady business. You had scoffed a bit at it. If only the Girl of Steel knew the intricate system that truly ruled over the cities she protected, she would have needed ten more like herself to barely grasp its surface.
You kept reading the news, dwelling for those moments of peace that life conceded you before you had to travel again, looking for your next target, unaware that your day was about to change drastically.
The bell of your apartment door had rung a couple of times before you answered and were surprised to find no one at the door. Instead, as you looked outside you noticed an envelope on the floor with a red wax seal you recognized instantly. You reached for it and opened it.
Inside you only found one thing. A little note that read: Quod Debitum Sanguine, you have one hour (Y/N). That was all you need to know to get ready. There was a debt you had to repay.
"Miss Luthor, if you appreciate your life and that of your friends, you will not press that button." You raised a brow at her and green defiant eyes looked back at you.
"And why is that?"
"Because they will die, and you too, if you don't listen to me." You kept the gun up and pointed at her hand. You were ready to risk a piece of her if that meant at least she would remain alive.
"Lower the gun and I might consider it."
She was trying to bargain and although you didn't have time for that, you felt like you had to play your cards as best as you could.
"Your father sent me, Miss Luthor." You said, and that seemed to confuse her enough that her attention was completely on you. "I wish I could explain further but we're running out of time."
"Where's Jess? My assistant?"
"I told her to leave. All your security has been compromised." You lowered your gun slowly, raising the hand that didn't hold the gun to show her you had nothing else on your hands. "I mean no harm. I know it doesn't look like it but you can trust me."
She seemed to ponder it for a moment even against all logic and reason of what she shouldn't. What finally convinced her you meant no harm was the way you handed two men as they entered her office with guns raised at her. Lena saw them come after you first but your reflexes were faster. You dodged one coming right after you as you shoot the other in the chest. The latter fell right to the ground as the bullet hit him. The one that remained tried to point his gun at you but you were faster and shot him twice, once in the foot and once in the stomach, leaving him too to agonize on the floor.
"There's more coming." You said regaining your composure, unfazed by the splatters of blood around you, and looked at her. "We have to go."
"Where are we going?" It was all Lena said before following you.
Whatever was happening, she figured it was best to have someone like you by her side, although she had preferred for you to use a less violent method. However, she quickly understood that wouldn't have been possible as more and more men keep coming for you while you were on your way down to the building. You took down a dozen before taking the elevator that lead to the underground parking lot and she didn't know if to be impressed or fear for her life, this time for real. But you had had many chances to end her and yet, you were doing the opposite, keeping her alive.
"You said my father sent you. How? Who are you?" She asked while you waited for the elevator to go down and open its doors.
"My name is (Y/N), (Y/L/N), I met your father years ago, I owe him." You kept yourself a bit busy counting the bullets left on the cartridge of your gun.
"Well, he passed away quite a few years ago too. I doubt he would care for you to pay him back." She said and you smiled, shaking your head.
"It's a bit more complicated than that." You said without adding more.
"I still don't know why I can't call for help."
"I know you have very powerful friends, Miss Luthor, but they are no match for this." You said as you changed the cartridge of your gun, getting ready. "Your head is worth a lot of money at the moment, all the people coming after you, they won't stop at anything until they put a bullet through your head."
"Some of my friends are bulletproof." She replied crossing her arms. "They could help us a little."
You scoffed. "If you mean the almighty Girl of Steel, they have Kryptonite bullets already in store for her."
Lena frowned and looked at you with suspicion. "How do you know about Kryptonite?"
"I have a lot of explaining to do, I know, but now is not the time or place." You looked at the elevator panel, there were only a couple of floors before you reached the parking lot. "I have to take you somewhere safe first."
"Where, exactly?" Lena watched as you raised your gun. The elevator had arrived and it was a moment before the doors opened.
"You'll see. Now, find cover." You said and as soon as the doors parted you lunched forward, essentially shooting everything that moved your way.
After managing to leave a little trail of bodies in the parking lot, you decided you had to hurry up. You had been hit by a bullet on your left arm, nothing too serious, a scratch for you really, but you still felt yourself losing energy. More assassins were on their way, no doubt, and you had little time to carry out your plan. Lena didn't ask more questions as you broke the window of a car and opened it. You both needed a ride and you didn't care what the options were. You and Lena got inside the car and you drove to the only place you knew was safe enough for the both of you.
"Welcome to the Continental. How may I help you?" The receptionist smiled as you approached her desk, looking you up and down discreetly.
"Good morning." You said with a little smile. "One room please." You took something from one of your jacket pockets, placing the object on the counter, sliding it to the receptionist.
Lena, who was standing a step behind you, looked at the exchange with curiosity and amazement. If she had seen you entering her hotel lobby looking like that, full of sweat and with bloodstains all over your clothes, with a car almost destroyed outside due to the mortal chase you had barely managed to escape, she would have called the police immediately.
Instead, she saw the receptionist take a thick golden coin from your fingers and slide it under her desk and look at you both with the most charming smile.
"A double room would be alright?" The receptionist asked and silently hoped you wouldn't call the laundry service. The big stains of blood on your clothes wouldn't come off easily.
"That would be nice, thank you." You nodded. "The doctor?"
"I'll send him to your room." The woman said and handed you a key. "Enjoy your stay."
You thanked her once more and walked to the elevators, with Lena following behind as she had done since she left her office with you.
The world had changed around her in a darker shade she didn't think was possible. You were a cold blood assassin protecting her and the people around you, the people there in the hotel, that she guessed was a fancy facade, barely batted an eye at your appearance, as if they were used to seeing people in that state all the time. A million questions were swirling in her mind, but she decided it was best to ask once you had been attended by the medic, that arrived shortly after you reached your assigned room.
She got checked first, and you were glad she hadn't been hurt too badly, only a few bruises and little cuts from all the debris you had left behind.
"Are you ready to tell me what's going on?" Lena pulled the chair where the doctor had been stitching you up and sat with her arms crossed. Her determined expression told you she was quite done with everything going around.
You grunted, feeling still sore from the chasing and the fight of the morning, and poured yourself a glass of bourbon the reception had so kindly sent for your pains. You poured some in another glass for her, placing the glass in front of her.
"Long story short, someone has put a price on your head. A bounty of 30 million dollars to the first mercenary that puts a bullet through your head." You took a mouthful of your drink and looked at her, waiting for her reply. She didn't touch her glass.
She raised a brow at you. "Who?"
"I don't know...yet." You shrugged. "But I'm sure we'll find who soon."
Lena looked at you with very inquisitive eyes. "And why are you protecting me?"
You sighed. It was time for explanations. "We are both here because of Lionel..."
You started in the criminal underworld as a young and reckless amateur but full of ambition. You had been always good at it, managing to survive in this ruthless world since you were a child. You had been lucky one of the crime bosses that ruled over National City got an interest in you.
You had raised quickly to the ranks and when you were old enough to fend for yourself you realized you wanted to be a bit more independent. Your boss didn't like the idea that much but decided to give you the change, not believing you could make it outside his business and he had been quite right once you left his side. Trying to get a contract, a killing order, was difficult even if it was open for everyone. You needed contacts and a chance, and it came in the form of Lionel Luthor.
There was a moment, years ago when his business started to struggle. Government officials were on his tail, trying to take him to the court over inconsistencies in his security protocols, trying to accuse him of espionage and such. It was all nonsense. Behind it all there was one person moving the strings, a very high official also involved in some shady business, and Lionel hated them enough to want them dead.
"I went to your father and offered my services." You poured yourself another finger of bourbon. "He refused, but I made him an offer of my own. If he put the contract and allowed me to take it, I would offer him a Marker. A sort of promise, sealed with blood, that would allow him to ask of me anything in the future. I would do it, with no questions asked, with no refusal, to repay his kindness."
"So he did." She finally took the glass you have poured for her and looked at the bottom of it.
"Yep." You took a sip of your glass and shifted in your seat.
"So what? Did he ask you to protect me before his death?" She tilted her head and took a sip of her drink. "How considerate."
You scoffed. "Believe it or not, he kind of did. Apparently he included his assets from all of this in his last will. He left you my Marker and a last request for me." You sighed. "If there was ever a contract opened for you, I was to protect you from everyone that came after you until they pulled it off, or in its defect, kill the idiot that opened the contract in the first place. That would automatically cancel it, unless there is another person to push it forward."
You downed the last of your bourbon, placing your glass back on the table, and looked at her.
"And you're doing this just in good faith? Because you have a debt with my father?"
"I am." You frowned slightly. "Look, miss Luthor, I sure all this seems a bit surreal but here's something you have to understand. This world has its own rules, and those rules must be obeyed. Some of those rules are, one, no business within Continental grounds, and two, that every Marker must be honored."
You explained raising two fingers at her.
"The first rule is very simple, and it will explain why I brought you here. This hotel is a sort of save haven for people like me, the golden rule demands that everyone who stays here must not participate in any contract, no matter how tempting. So it means you're kind of untouchable right now. No one will dare to kill you unless they have a death wish of their own."
"You can do that?" She said surprised. "Bringing a target here?"
"Honestly, I don't know but so far it seems it's working for us." You leaned back in your chair. "Now, about the Marker...I have to complete your father's request so you, if you'll be so kind, can seal the other part of the Marker and finally free me of it. Otherwise, I'll be considered excommunicado, meaning I'll lose all kind of privileges and protection and be killed on sight. If I don't get killed first, of course."
"Well, I would very much like to help you and free myself of this." She put her glass on the table too and looked at you with the most unimpressed expression. "Unfortunately, I don't have your Marker. My father never mentioned such thing, and I don't think I've seen it."
"I know." You nodded slowly. "You must claim it first, with management."
"I have to call the Manager?"
At that moment, the black landline phone in your room started to ring. You both turned to look at it and you grunted as you pulled yourself from your chair to answer, you were barely feeling better. You raised the speaker to your ear and listened. Lena observed you hum and reply, some times with a yes or a no, and end the call shortly after.
"Well, you won't have to call him. We are booked for dinner with him tonight, at seven." You returned to your chair and sighed. "Let's make sure to wear something nice."
She scoffed and downed the last of her drink. It was turning to be a very interesting day.

do you happen to have any fic recs where Scully is the one to initiate msrâs first kiss? I see a lot of the opposite but scully should get to do it
Dana Scully Makes the First Move
Oh, yes, a ton.
Here are a few I haven't reread in a while. *ahem*
Loose chronological order below~
Little_Pumpkin_Bagel's Vive Ut Vivas
I swallow hard. Assuming by the way sheâs looking at me, Iâm mostly sure that whatever sheâs up to will throw caution out of limits for the sake of both of us. â âAnd what would that be, Scully?â
She doesnât answer me. Instead, she holds my collar and pulls me down....
Post One Breath Mulder can't quite conceal his true feelings, which leaves Scully an opening.
trustmescully's Intoxicating Darkness
"I love you too, Scully," he smiles and his eyes shine with his mouth.
S2 Mulder, depressed and suicidal, is stopped from further considerations when Scully chases after him in the freezing rain.

But he needed her to know like she needed him to know, and there was no pretending any more.
âI knowâ she whispered, so quiet it was almost in her head. He nodded silently and pressed his forehead to hers, their eyes closing, hands falling intertwined again between them.Â
Post Pusher Scully supports Mulder until his defeat breaks her walls.
Justin Glasser's (xphilefic) Lonely Nightmare
She brushed her knuckles over his cheek. "When are you going to start listening to me?"
Mulder felt his mouth twitch into a smile. "Scully," he said. His voice sounded like it was rubbed over sandpaper. Screaming, he thought. That's from when I was screaming.
"What, Mulder?" She was rubbing his shoulders now, trying to work the blood back into them. He was alive, so she was playing Doctor Scully, all business, rubbing their relationship back to normal as quickly as possible. Mulder wasn't sure he wanted it back to normal so quickly. Mulder wasn't sure he could handle normal right away.
"If you kiss me again, I promise not to shout."
Post Never Again Mulder and Scully slowly bridge the distance between them during an intense case of missing teens and bonfires.
@mollybecameanengineer/Sareki's My Beloved (Tumblr)
He started to rise, to apologize and leave the room, but she stopped him. âWhat things?â she whispered.Â
Her face was open, her eyes bright. She knew what he was going to say, and it didnât look like she was afraid of it.
Post Kaddish Mulder can't sleep, slipping into Scully's motel room for a late-night conversation.

Max 2.0
Once her forehead touched his, she whispered, âyou are not Max. You have so many people here who love you and need you and you have so much to offer them back and you do. Thatâs the difference between you and Max. He searched for himself. You search for me, Mulder. You search,â kissing his forehead, then quickly his mouth, âfor me.â
Post Max Mulder drives Scully out of the city where they stargaze while she tries to reassure and motivate him to keep fighting.
The Warmest Thing I Own
He saw her suddenly blink, head shake, both signs she was just waking up, âwhat? Mulder?â
Knowing she didnât recall anything because there was no embarrassment turning her red, no heat in her cheeks, eyes innocently confused, ânothing...."
Cancer arc Mulder and Scully skip work, spending the day together as he prepares the best gourmet steak and mushrooms he can for her. (The sequels Fancy Paper Napkins, End of the Road, and Post Moments are excellent reads, too.)
Miles to Go
"Mulder ..."
"Yeah?"
"Smile."
The camera flashed in his face, "I think this one should be labeled 'Before'."
Mulder gulped down the last of his hot dog, "before what?"
"Before I kissed you."
Post FTF Mulder and Scully take the remains of their burnt office home, falling asleep and waking to a storm outside. Scully bucks the expected in a few unexpected ways.
206 Bones
Chocking up her growing feeling of dread to exhaustion, anger and lack of any type of proper vitamin or mineral, she helped her partner search, track and eventually corner Parsons in an abandoned building fifteen minutes away, half demolished and dangerous to any and all who set foot inside.
Only seconds before getting the final word to take the building, Scullyâs fear got the better of her and she turned Mulder to face her, pulling him down to her....
Scully gives Mulder a good luck kiss before they attempt to flush their suspect from a rotten building... and ends up the one worse for wear.

Sonnet
The kiss was sweet. Simple. Breathtaking.
Redux II Mulder is afraid Scully is dying, at last, only for his world to be turned right-side up in a multitude of ways.
Package Deal (txt)
But she ran her thumb beneath his chin, tipping his head up, forcing him to meet her gaze. Her eyes spoke a thousand sweet promises and then there was no more hesitation, no lingering gaze, no more silent questions passed back and forth between them.
Post FTF Scully is overjoyed: she and Mulder are still partnered, their story was believed, and the files are getting expanded. So overjoyed, in fact, she moves their relationship to the next level.
nabokoves's Unwritten Hymns
She mumbled his name into his shoulder, foggy with confusion. She wanted to know if he was okay. He pulled back to look at her, struggling to find something to say. He brimmed with words so corny they would make even the poets puke.
Post Redux II Mulder may hate God-- chalking up Scully's remission to science instead of his angry prayers-- but he in no way hates God's believer, Scully.
@nowwhateinstein's (Ao3) Fic: Seeking Warmth/Seeking Warmth
I look at him. Heâs regarding me with a gaze that is both familiar and thrilling. Tenderness and desire are present in his eyes. Itâs the same look, I realize, he had moments before he went to kiss me in the hallway outside his apartment - a moment that seems like a lifetime ago. Then, I found myself hesitating, afraid to reciprocate his acknowledgement of a truth weâd both known. Now, however, in light of everything thatâs happened in the past week, it seems like the most natural thing in the world to lean over and kiss him.
Post FTF Scully picks up where she and Mulder left off, despite her slowly recovering body and patched-up snowsuit.
@ghostbustermelanieking/skuls's ice crystals (Ao3)
He pulls her hand up and kisses the back of it in relief. Her forehead furrows and she pulls her hand out of his. Something inside him thunks.Â
But the next thing he knows, she is leaning across the space between them and cupping her face in his.
Post Tithonus Mulder and Scully flesh out their frustrations and feelings as they (almost) freeze to death.

How about M&S in Boston
She joins you next to the desk, a murmured noise of acknowledgment at the âCANCELLEDâ notice that appears next to your flight number. You brace yourself for thinly veiled frustration, but when you risk a glance, thereâs a funny little twinkle in her eye instead. Youâre instantly taken back to the week priorâ
Post IVF Mulder mulls over the brief kiss Scully gave him after the procedure failed.
Sending you number 20 for the kiss prompts.
I think itâs safe to say that itâs not Skinner that Iâm interested in.â
And there it is. Youâve been steadily climbing toward this moment for the better part of the month, neither willing to take that final leap. Itâs as if the absence of height difference gives her a burst of confidence, even as it turns you into a fumbling idiot.
Mulder, very late for a meeting with Skinner, is intercepted on the stairway by Scully.
effywho's Astra Inclinant
"I say...I say we stop talking." Scully replies.
It's his turn to look down, crumbling. "Sure, I understand."
He feels her breath on his hair as she leans closer. "I'm not sure you do."
Post IVF Mulder is shocked by not only their success but also Scully's follow up after his declaration.
EvanBlack's WHITEOUT
'You have a beautiful face Mulder.'
...There was an awkward silence, then he shifted and propped his cheek on his hand.
'That's the Evening Blush talking Scully.' He smiled with his lips, but she could see his eyes were serious - and nervous.
His nerves gave her sudden courage.Â
A plane crashes Mulder and Scully in the snowy mountains; and their petty squabbles become small in comparison to starvation, necessary cannibalism, and the increasing odds of death.
Xequinn's (Ao3) Playing Hookie
âYeah let's do thisâ âOn a count of threeâ she saysâ âOne,â he responds On âTwoâ they adjust suddenly sweaty hands âThree!â Scully leaps off, pulling Mulder behind her
Scully has fun dragging Mulder around on her slightly manic beachside adventures.
The Trouble with Expectations - Chapter 1 (Tumblr)
âScully of course I showed. Why did you think I hadnât?â She didnât answer. Just let more tears fall. He grabbed for her hand again, and she let him. âScully Iâll always come get youâ
She didnât answer. Just lunged forward and grabbed his face and kissed him as hard as she could.
Scully, assuming Mulder forgot to pick her up from the airport, is heartbroken... until Mulder wanders over from the bathroom.
@this-is-surely-tru/yours_truly's If the Fates Allow
âTactile evidence only increases the anticipation, Mulder. It doesnât diminish it.â
The slightly concussed look on her partnerâs face was undeniably adorable, and he shook his head slightly as if to clear it while they both relaxed again into the carriage seat. âFar be it from me to argue with that, Scully.â
Mulder, stuck in New York for Christmas, surprises his partner with a rented carriage ride; and she, in turn, surprises him as well.
@alabama-metal-man's Unnamed
She pulls back, runs her hand along his cheek, and turns away to take a long drag of her coffee. She closes her eyes, sighing contentedly.
âWhat was that for?â She can hear the hint of teasing, the lingering smile.
Scully is having a rotten morning until Mulder remembers her coffee order.
@admiralty-xfd/admiralty's Up in your arms - Chapter 1
He stared at her with a look she couldnât figure out, but it wasnât a look that said donât. It was the furthest thing from that look she could discern. So she leaned into him, all the way in, and she felt him inhale ever so slightly as she took the biggest risk of her life.
Post Closure Mulder contemplates his new life. Scully answers at least one question for him.
And just for fun, I grabbed a few of my baronessblixen rereads:
@baronessblixenâs (Ao3)Â
Temporary Insanity (Ao3)
How many times has she cheated death this year? Two times? Three? Sheâs come so close that sheâs stopped counting. Every time, she just picked herself up, bought a new blouse if it was torn or bloody, threw away shoes that werenât as lucky as she was, and calmed herself down when a nightmare tried to take her under. Sheâs done. She feels it in her fingertips. She feels it like a current running through her body. She needs something. Something to make her feel alive.
Paper Clip Scully is spurned by her anger into more-than-professional overtures.
The Day After (Ao3)
âKiss and make up?â Mulder says with a grin, biting his bottom lip. He at least has to try. Scully stares at him for a moment, the way she sometimes does before she tells him how crazy he is. He knows that look. But this time itâs different.Â
Wetwired Mulder and Scully's discussion leads to decisive action on her part.
Never Cold With You By My Side
Feeling bold, she lets her hand wander behind his neck to play with the hair there. If he doesnât want this â her â he can stop her before this even starts. But he doesnât. So she pulls him to her, pressing her lips to his.
One Son Mulder and Scully spend the night locked up in Fort Marlene while she is hurt, jealous, and angry.
Dreams Are Made of This
Scully gets on her tiptoes and kisses Mulder. On the lips, just like that. Just like sheâs been thinking about. Itâs a quick kiss, but thorough. Like youâd kiss your husband. The person you love. All those thoughts fly through her head as she steps out the door. She stops there, realizing what she just did.
Scully, in the midst of a hopeful IVF daydream, accidentally kisses Mulder.
Five Minutes - Chapter 2 (Tumblr)
He returns with them, one in each hand, and when Scully reaches out to take hers, he shakes his head. Seeing him like this, her knight in crinkled Armani, his hands full, she canât wait another second. She gets on tiptoes, careful not to topple over, and presses her lips to his. He tastes like coffee and the chocolate chip cookie they shared on the plane. Theyâve waited long enough for this.
âWe have?â Mulder, his eyes glazed over, grinning stupidly, sounds amused.
Will never not include this post IVF success story.
Candlelight Moments With You
You look like you're gonna faint. Eat something." She holds a chip up to his mouth and he accepts it, his lips closing over her finger. He can't tell what flavor the chips are, but he knows he wants more.
"More?" he asks in a whisper. She smiles at him and nods. But he doesn't get another chip. Instead, he gets a kiss.
Mulder tries to give Scully a good enough Christmas while both are practically stranded in a motel.
