I can't stop thinking about how close The Hunchback of Notre Dame was to being a good movie. It was on the cusp of being a truly transformative work that could have stood the test of time. And I can lament on and on about how well done certain aspects are, especially in regards to the two best songs Disney may have ever produced, "God Help the Outcasts" and "Hellfire"
I can go on and on about its amazing portrayal of the abuse of power, especially for religious figures; I can praise the way it portrays Catholic guilt and lust and manipulation and how those things relate to each other. I can applaud it's darker themes handled in an impactful yet not explicit way, including the ones after mentioned as well as murder and ableism and all other manner of things.
I can do that and I can praise that and those will always have a special place in my heart when I think about that movie, but none of that can change the fact that it completely mishandled the portrayal of Romani people. I would like to emphasize that Romani people have considered the word used throughout the movie as a slur at least 20ish years before that movie came out. It was well known. And yet they included it anyway, gratuitously at that. And even more so than that, because many people excuse that as being "time period accurate" (while I heavily disagree because time period accuracy really shouldn't be applied to slurs in a movie targeted towards children) even if that were an acceptable concession, they completely mishandled the representation of Romani people as a whole.
Esmeralda was "the good one", she was the one that changed the main cast's mind about Romani people as a whole. In theory that wouldn't be an issue if her character was used JUST as a way to expand Quasimodo's worldview. He had never met a romani person before, and his only opinions of that group of people came from count frollo's obviously prejudiced perspective. But they didn't do that. She was the only positively portrayed Romani person in that movie. When they go to the (I shit you fucking not) HIDDEN LAIR of alllll the other romani people, the characters are tied up and paraded around on their way to be murdered. Throughout all of this the Romani people in that place our portrayed as criminals, thieves, bandits, and people who revel in violence, which I don't have to say is pretty fucked up, yeah?? They completely dropped the ball and were very wishy-washy with their portrayal of Romani people, which completely undercut the message of the entire movie.
And I can also take the time to say that it could have been a much better movie if they had just changed a few things. If this movie wasn't targeted towards children, if the writers understood the weight and history behind the word used to refer to Romani people, if they had cut the romance, if they had portrayed Romani people in a better light, this movie COULD have been transcendent, could have been timeless.
But those are all ifs and coulds, and so instead I will mourn the movie for what it was and appreciate the parts of it that are good

one day we are gonna have to talk about how misogyny is so normalized in the bee tee ess fandom bc it's truly wild to me how they are so openly misogynistic towards big ggs bc they can't handle that they can be as successful as their men and to think most of their fandom are women makes it even worse

With AO3 having been down, what was I supposed to do? Work on the unfinished wool cloak I want done before winter and the week of freezing weather we get then??? Finish up the small corset belt I started because I was bored? Just in general poking objects with sharp objects until they become clothing?
... actually not a bad idea.

if you鈥檙e ever in the position to choose between giving up and accepting defeat, and actually trying to fight the ancient unkillable god that is about to peel apart reality like a string cheese, remember this: scientifically speaking, you might as well give it a shot!
1.there were trees at the beginning of the world! there were trees so long ago that they predate bacteria that causes wood to decay. when a tree fell, it would lie there in stasis and there wasn鈥檛 any way of breaking down wood xylem on a molecular level in that way.
2. it seems obvious to say, but wood eating bacteria are literally incapable of comprehending what they鈥檙e breaking down. It鈥檚 just not information conciously available to a microorganism. they don鈥檛 know what they鈥檙e deconstructing, where it came from, bacteria have no way to even fathom the existence of a tree as a concept.
3. Regardless of the facts above, the world we live in today is a world where wood inevitably decomposes
it is worth fighting the unkillable god no matter how pointless it seems. it is worth taking the risk even though youre trying to accomplish something impossible. the reality in which you live was also once reality in which trees didn鈥檛 rot. You live in a reality that allows for existence before the possibility of destruction. you live in a reality where uncomprehending microbes break down matter that is so far beyond the scope of their comprehension that it feels comical to specify something so obvious. you live in a reality that occasionally allows unshakeable physical truths to be altered with no warning.
It is worth fighting the unkillable god because trees are so old they predate the source of their destruction, and it still did not spare them. It is worth fighting the unkillable god because bacteria rots unthinkingly, because there is room in our cosmos for destruction without comprehension on the part of the destroyer. It is worth fighting the unkillable god because now and then reality retracts the promise of immortality without fanfare, and when that happens there is no mercy for the ancient. the unmaking is not softer for the desecrators ignorance. for all things, existence is endless until the exact point where it ends.
so you might as well try to kill the unkillable god. it doesn鈥檛 seem likely, but at the beginning of the world, trees didn鈥檛 rot. so you never know! you never know

I think it鈥檇 be funny if Dick and Jason, due to wearing bright yellow capes on the job for years, are capable of stealth to a frankly unhinged degree. They barely have to try anymore it鈥檚 so second nature. Dick can just completely disappear while in the loudest neon clothes imaginable. Jason is constantly startling people who don鈥檛 understand how they missed a guy the size of a fridge standing right there. Bruce is extremely grateful for his unbreakable poker face because they have both startled him by accident and would never ever let him live it down if they knew.

when will we talk about the willful helplessness epidemic on here. So many people on this god forsaken website demand to have any and all things that exist outside their personal experiences directly, personally pre-chewed and spoonfed to them. And when you do, they'll then ask for you to swallow for them, too, because, you see, in THEIR experience..,

I just love how the difference between these images SO encapsulates the difference in vibe between SNW and TOS.
I鈥檓 genuinely sorry, glistening-tits-buff-Spock-with-manly-sleek-interior-design-choices-and-scantily-clad-bethrothed-in-background-who-you-rather-explicitly-raw-and-cheat-on, you could only attain the level of unadulterated cunt that is TOS Spock and his weird campy artifact-filled bedroom in your DREAMS.
