Doing my at least bi-annual reread of the manga, and I kinda just glossed over this bit the first time around because it wasn't something that I considered to have much significance until later. But the fact Dazai refers to Chuuya as partner and not ex-partner, or even just Chuuya can be interpreted in a bunch of different ways knowing Dazai and his propensity to kid around, especially with Chuuya. But the panels after where Steinbeck asks what kind of duo they are, and Dazai responds with terrible rivals rather than enemies or the sort makes me lean more toward the fact that even though they're on opposite sides now, nothing's really changed between them. Certainly not for the worse. They were also supposed to only be partners for the night and Chuuya set aside his grudge just this one time, but we know that ends up not being true because of the entirety of Meursault. Sure, Chuuya was likely at least irritated (and rightfully so) by Dazai's sudden disappearance the night he defected and went out with a literal bang by blowing Chuuya's car up, but I think if Dazai sensed any real animosity from Chuuya he wouldn't be so eager to refer to Chuuya as his partner still, even if he was teasing. But also, like, if Chuuya harbored an actual grudge toward Dazai, he would've been more hesitant about using Corruption, and yet he still trusted Dazai. Dazai knows he can be a little shit. He's definitely self-aware that he gets under people's skin. But over the duration of their partnership even he's had limits he wouldn't cross when messing with Chuuya—hasn't brought up the Sheep, the Flags, or rubbed any of the losses or betrayals in Chuuya's face. And vice-versa Chuuya to Dazai with Oda. I fully believe Chuuya knows why Dazai left, and that it was probably an open secret Mori obviously wanted to keep hush-hush about to save face, but Chuuya probably found out regardless. And that's why I think Dazai is still comfortable with Chuuya even after the reunion they had in the dungeon—Chuuya doesn't have to agree with what Dazai did and he has every right to be annoyed that Dazai just upped and betrayed the Port Mafia, but he understands because Dazai was driven off in an almost familiar way as when Chuuya was ostracized from the Sheep.

Now if you’ve only ever made the correct choice kissed Dylan, you could be forgiven for thinking Kaitlyn is pretty into Ryan. She looks a little pouty about not being chosen here.

I just really want to know what kind of direction they gave Brenda here because my girl is NOT happy. There’s, like, a silent ‘ugh’ in this face! And we don’t know why! Is it because she’s worried about Dylan’s feelings? She didn’t seem that worried about him before the actual kiss. Is it because of the awkward silence that accompanied it? It’s not like she knows everyone would have cheered if he picked Dylan, only we know that.

Well, guess that happened.

She looks significantly happier about Dylan kissing her supposed crush.

She could just be putting on a brave face for her friends, but Dylan can’t even see her yet and she’s already smiling.

And, of course, the game further affirms this because we don’t get the ‘disappointed’ chyron regarding Kaitlyn if Dylan is chosen instead.

So, I totally respect everyone’s right to ship them as a throuple, but when people say SMG should have just made them a canon throuple in the game I have to disagree, unless they were going to fundamentally change the characters and their reactions to each other in order to do it. (Other than Kaitlyn’s reactions here, writer/director Will Byles says Dylan is gay, not bisuxal, and we know he’s canonically pretty jealous.) And that’s not just my compulsory monogamy speaking, I actually think Nick/Abi/Emma would be a perfectly workable throuple and I’m surprised more people don’t write them that way.

But mainly I think Kaitlyn just… really isn’t that into Ryan. And I do wish we got more insight into her character on this topic and just in general. Is it because she knows Dylan likes him more than she does? Is it because she’s actually a lesbian suffering under comphet (or completely aro/ace and just not accepting it) and she had to tell Jacob something when he asked who she thought the hottest person at camp was, so she picked the brooding loner who never talks to anyone because that seemed safe? Is she secretly harboring feelings for Jacob and that’s why she’s so hard on her childhood friend about his relationship with Emma?? There’s just no way to know.

And I want to hate Way, but I just can't bring myself to. Like what he did was horrible, but I can also sympathize with why he did something so awful.

And there has to be some history between Pete-Way-Kenta. Pete looking at Way the way he is; Kenta only showing emotions in front of others and letting the mask slip when he interacts with Pete or seeing Way getting abused by their Daddy. It's like Kenta has something for Pete, while Pete has something for Way and Way is just blindly hung up on Babe!

There's definitely a lot going on between all these adopted siblings and their destructive Daddy.

But, honestly, I can hate Way? Not in an unforgivable way but in a 'for fuck's sake he needs to realize what he's doing' kind of way.

Because Way trying to claim he would never hurt or lie to Babe is just... what? What, dude? You literally tried to rape him through mind control, how are we defining hurt now? Is there other, secret definition of the word I don't know that Way is using?

There is definitely history for Pete and Way and Kenta. Pete and Way seems likely to be about the whole Enigma thing, since they're both enigmas and I could definitely see Pete feeling more protective of Way due to that, knowing how it has to feel like to be so unique and held under the daddy's abusive fist.

But I think a lot about Way never actually left. Tony was still paying for his everything while Babe had completely cut himself off and obviously thought Way had as well. So... that's where I get into some interesting tangles about Way.

Way is so hung up on Babe but he had no issue taking money from Tony despite knowing how Babe felt about him and he was absolutely willing to rape him and help continue Tony's human trafficking knowing how Babe felt about that and I question so much of Way's love for Babe because how can he do all of that and even think he loves him?

Way is an enigma incel. He thinks that he loves Babe but he really just loves this idea he's make up in his head of who Babe should be to love him and he still hasn't even begun to face the truth of his own actions of choices.

Because he did some of the worst things he could possible have done and yet still views himself as Babe's friend and not just Babe's friend but someone who would never lie to him or hurt him and just... how? How does he still see himself as that?

Volo's symbolic association with sunflowers is interesting and a little tragic. Fitting for him. His temple outfit includes a sunflower-like design on the shoulder:

It's not clear where in-universe the design of his outfit comes from. Judging by the shoulder cutouts and the interesting hairstyle, I assume he designed it himself.

However, it's also possible it's derived from Celestic fashion because he's so invested in the history of his people. According to Wikipedia, the sunflower symbolizes "Pure and lofty thoughts, adoration, longevity, loyalty" - all things associated with the long-lived, pious, and deeply spiritual Celestica people. It seems fitting Volo would show his culture in his clothing, intentionally or not.

More than that, Volo himself is a sunflower. Arceus is associated with blinding golden light, circles, and the gift of creation or life, and it's not difficult to link that to the sun. Obviously, sunflowers devotedly follow the sun across the sky, depend on its light and warmth, and even mimic the appearance of the sun. Again, it's easy to see an echo of that in Volo.

The tragic part of Volo's story is that he's devoted so much of his life to his God and tied up so much of his identity in his worship that he's just a shadow of Arceus, the sunflower to the sun, down to the way he tries to emulate it in his clothing.

Volo seems to have nobody he's truly close to. Instead, he pours himself into chasing his sun. He seems to want to be close to Cogita to ask questions about the gods, but she barely tolerates him. He regularly disappears from his merchant's duties to explore ruins alone, seeking more knowledge. He's friendly and familiar with everyone but intentionally remains distant from the kinds of connection one would find in the Clans or Jubilife, to the point that doesn't even consider himself part of the Guild. Cogita has a line of dialogue that directly references this:

""One of those Ginkgo Guild merchants"? You make it sound as if you're not one of them."

Volo has his God, his worship, and very little else. He's a sunflower without the acknowledgement of his sun. He's defined himself by his devotion and thrown away everything in the pursuit of divinity, only to realize he has nothing else.
