“You are an expert in making things, well…not that expert” Noemí, 5 years old Walking through a forest, a broken tree leans towards another. In the bus, a teenager’s head leans towards another. To lean on is to give a leap of faith, beyond reason, you must trust the tree to be strong enough, the shoulder to be welcoming, and the arms to be stretched out to hold you. A trust that comes from intuition, and faith, awareness that comes from the heart instead of the mind. 
During my time in Sandnes I have been experimenting with my “not so expert” way of making things. Through intuition and faith, I have been exercising trust; trust that things will lean towards the right direction, that we will hold each other’s weight, that our shoulders are welcoming, and that just as trees in the forest we will be just fine with a little bit less thought.

Pushing a fluid into a porous granular material can fracture it into branching, lightning-like patterns. Here, air is injected into wet grains as a laboratory analog to hydrocarbon extraction or fracturing to treat contaminated soil. The injection of air compacts grains along the branch boundaries, keeping individual branches separated from one another. The patterns that form change with grain shape and ultimately result from the interactions of pressure, surface tension, friction and viscous forces. Nature is the best therapist.There is nothing better than soft misty air caressing your face, first rays of sun hitting your body and be surrounded by the sounds and smells of forest.🧗‍♀️⠀ ⠀ As we are blessed with long summer days in Norway, I decided to make best of it by catching the sunrise.Got up at 4.30 AM, hiked to a nearby hill and sat there to watch the mighty fireball come up.🌄⠀ ⠀ The view from up top was mesmerizing. Exhibition 'Min egen Sol' Stasjon K, Langgaten 58 A, 4306 Sandnes | Norway Opening: Thursday the14th of February at 19.00 In geophysics, an anomaly could indicate the target or a potential interest, but its nature is not determined. An anomaly raises interests because it might indicate there are something different there. It's called an anomaly instead of the specified target because of 'uncertainty'. Here in Sandnes, during the residence, Hurpia tried to recreate instruments and scale models that could reconstitute situations of imprecision; based on subjects such as luminous and electromagnetic phenomena that transit between explained facts and simple delusions. Pensées confinées #6
            Je vis un déconfinement partiel ces derniers jours. Je sors en respectant scrupuleusement la durée légale - une heure à la minute près - et en respectant moins scrupuleusement la distance autorisée. Je vais chercher la lumière et le calme. Aube. Crépuscule. Quand le ciel rougeoie, quand le Soleil apparaît ou disparaît. Interrogation des premiers humains et des petits d’hommes, où va le Soleil ?
         - L’été dernier j’étais avec ma nièce de 3 ans et demi, dehors, lors d’une soirée d’août. Elle me racontait le sommeil du Soleil et la course des planètes ; je lui racontais les pays où il fait jour même la nuit. Elle voulait qu’on y aille ensemble. Elle avait la bouche pleine de glace au chocolat ; j’avais la bouche pleine d’histoires à rêver debout. -

Léger dépassement du cercle kilométrique sur la gauche. Mini-promenade en forme de mégaphone. Cri contre l��immobilité.
               Je prends des photos sur le chemin. A tracer le même itinéraire, je vais vite épuiser les sujets photographiques avec mon portable à la qualité moyenne. Ma ville est une zone industrielle un dimanche de juillet, ma ville a enlevé des zéros à son nombre d’habitants. J’ai l’impression d’avoir inversé le rapport, avant j’appartenais à ma ville, désormais elle m’appartient. Au moins partiellement, dans la partie la moins habitée du cercle orangé que je me suis donné comme terrain de jeu. Boule à neige renversée d’où tombent des flocons de silence et de calme.
             Ce n’est pas un appareil-photo qui permet de restituer au mieux l’ambiance. Il me faudrait un enregistreur. Si j’avais su j’en aurais pris un au collège pour faire du field recording. Nagra à la main, j’aurais capté les sons ___ les blancs ___ les chants des oiseaux ___ les scooters pilotés par des deuxièmes lignes livrant des sushis aux troisièmes lignes ___ un chien qui aboie ___ le son du port de commerce et du ronron lointain provenant de l’activité continue de deuxièmes lignes dans un des radoubs ____ mes pas ___ le vent dans les branches ___ le grésillement des caténaires au dessus de la ligne de chemin de fer ___ la conversation fugace de deux étudiants à propos des partiels ___ le ‘bonjour’ jovial de deux post-étudiants ___ et encore le chant des oiseaux. Hier soir, sur la fin de ma tournée j’ai discuté avec des gens. Je marchais derrière eux et ils spéculaient sur la fin du déconfinement. L’homme s’est retourné et m’a demandé si j’en avais une idée. Même quand on me donne la parole de bon gré j’ai peur de déranger, alors directement j’ai dit ‘j’ai entendu que vous parliez du déconfinement, c’est ça ? Mais je n’écoutais pas la conversation, j’ai juste entendu d’une oreille.’ Il me restait moins de 5 minutes de marche, moins de 5 minutes d’écoute.
               - En février dernier au festival ‘Longueur d’Ondes’, festival de la radio et de l’écoute, j’ai assisté à une rencontre avec Aline Pénitot et Fernand Deroussen sur l’écologie sonore. Sur France Culture, on peut (ré)écouter le chant de la baleine à bosse, produit par Aline Pénitot. C’est désarmant de beauté. Pour les troisièmes lignes, il n’y a pas d’excuse pour ne pas y prêter l’oreille et ce sera toujours plus nourissant pour l’âme que votre pain raté. Sur le site de Fernand Deroussen, audionaturaliste, il y a plein de très belles choses à écouter. Entre les murs du Quartz, il donnait un très beau conseil, celui de prendre le temps chaque jour de se tenir plusieurs minutes dans un endroit calme à l’extérieur et de se laisser à une écoute pleine et allant de loin en loin, de capter les bruits par ricochet. Voilà un moment parfait pour le faire. Et se rendre compte, au déconfinement, des sons que l’on aura perdu. Quelques autres sources pour l’écoute des bruits de la nature : Bernie Krause, Marc Namblard, Gordon Hempton + Arte Radio a une très belle section ‘Ailleurs’ regorgeant de musicalités diverses et a produit une série ‘Ecouter le Monde’ sur ces ‘chasseurs de sons’. Et c’est bien plus beau que le pas lourd d’un jogger haletant. -

                    Que fera-t-on au moment du déconfinement ? Sortir, boire, serrer dans les bras, rire, réinvestir les lieux, réinsuffler vie et proximité dans les liens. Oui, évidemment. Mais en marchant le long du boulevard Gambetta le regard évidemment attiré par la rade, je vois au loin (merci le temps clair et l’air pur) les Monts d’Arrées qui dépassent de la ligne droite de la presqu’île du Plougastel. En m’affalant sur mon lit le regard détourné de l’écran pour réfléchir à ma syntaxe poussive, je vois mes chaussures de randonnée. Alors si le décret le permet, je sortirai, je boirai, je serrerai dans les bras, je rirai, je réinvestirai les lieux, je réinsufflerai vie et proximité dans les liens. Et j’irai chez mes parents chercher ma tente pour aller la planter quelque part vers là où le regard porte. Mountains beyond mountains.
                    - Jeudi dernier en marchant le soir, j’avais des sensations norvégiennes. Eclat vespéral, air frais mais coeur réchauffé par l’onction des derniers rayons, ligne embrasée à l’horizon ( Une nuit en France, je peux rester des minutes la tête levée à regarder le ciel. Une nuit en Norvège j’étais sorti de ma tente pour assouvir un besoin naturel, comme disent les commentateurs de Tour de France, j’aurais pu regarder des heures le trait clair annonçant le pays où il fait jour même la nuit). Le calme scandinave se pose sur Brest, 21 heures c’est déjà la deuxième partie de soirée là-bas. Rues silencieuses, croisements modérés, avenue d’Alesund, rue de Sandnes, rond-point Peer-Gynt, jetée Hovedoya.-

I haven't had time to take photos of my works lately, so now is the time to start with this piece I created during my January residency at AiR Sandnes.
KLOKKESTRENG is one of the few treasures I've stumbled across in local thrift stores. The Norwegian word translates as "bell pull," and its origins can be traced back to England, where it was used as a decorative cord for a system of bells to call servants. Over time, the KLOKKESTRENG evolved from a functional tool to a decorative element. Handcrafted and embroidered, usually wall-hanging, it was widespread in Norwegian households in the 1960s and 1970s.
My intervention on the KLOKKESTRENG consists of adding wool yarn on top of the original. The finished piece measures 118 x 25 cm.

/////////////////////// AiR Sandnes is proud to present an open studio event of our current artist in residence Paulina Mellado “You are an expert in making things, well…not that expert” Noemí, 5 years old Walking through a forest, a broken tree leans towards another. In the bus, a teenager’s head leans towards another. To lean on is to give a leap of faith, beyond reason, you must trust the tree to be strong enough, the shoulder to be welcoming, and the arms to be stretched out to hold you. A trust that comes from intuition, and faith, awareness that comes from the heart instead of the mind. During my time in Sandnes I have been experimenting with my “not so expert” way of making things. Through intuition and faith, I have been exercising trust; trust that things will lean towards the right direction, that we will hold each other’s weight, that our shoulders are welcoming, and that just as trees in the forest we will be just fine with a little bit less thought. Paulina Mellado (1986) is a Chilean Artist based in Santiago, Chile. She holds a BFA from Universidad de Chile, Santiago, CL, and a MFA from AKV St. Joost, Den Bosch, NL. Through the use of materials that that refer both to everyday life and craft making her playful installations and sculptures deal with our difficult relation to nature and its many unresolved mysteries. Her work has been exhibited in different venues around the globe such as: The Orchid and the Wasp, Amsterdam, NL, Tribschenhorn, Luzern, CH, Club Solo, Breda, NL, XS Gallery, Santiago, CL, Loods 12, Wetteren, BE, WOLKE, Brussels, BE, among others. She has participated in diverse residency programs such as: BilbaoArte, Bilbao, Spain, Mustarinda, Hyrynsalmi, Finland, Kaus Australis, Rotterdam, the Netherlands among others.
