The world is seriously so fucked up that every time I even attempt to write something about Iran, I feel embarrassed. Like I wanna write about how Iranians are protesting when just kilometers away, in Afghanistan, girls aren’t allowed to go to school. When they’re getting raped and murdered by ISIS. I wanna write but then I remeber that Afghans are literally dying of hunger, when I remember that Syria is under fire, when I remember that Russia is still attacking Ukraine, when I remember that Palestinians are dying everyday and no one gives a shit.
But you know what? You know what’s really fucking interesting? The fact that all these events have something in common. And no it’s not the US (not saying they’re not involved or anything) and no it’s not Britain; it’s the fucking IRI.
The Islamic government of Iran has, for decades, been fucking things up in the middle east. And sure they have help from the US and Russia because what they’re doing benefits everybody at the top. They fuck up and all those big guys get a piece of the pie.
They have been funding ISIS and Taliban and at the same time sending troops to Syria and Palestine “to help end terrorism”.
They are killing their own people, supporting Putin and Russia and meddling in the politics of every country in the Middle East.
IRI isn’t just a problem for Iranians. Countries and their politics affect eachother. There is no fucked up nation that is not also ruining the lives of people in other countries. IRI is a problem for the entire world and with their demise so many other problems will also probably die down or become a lot less severe.
The big powers in the world don’t want Iran to be rid of this regime, it’s not good for them. Financially or in any other way. News will get warped, there will be no reports, there will be no help, they will keep on selling them weapons and ammo.
If you’re wondering about the Middle East and why there’s always something bad going on there, if you’re so used to hearing about Middle Easterns dying or being at war, it’s because it’s good for so many people that this be the way things are there. It’s not the natural order of things. No it’s beneficial. It helps the economy of so many other countries and politicians, even those in the fucking Middle East.
No government is going to put an end to this. To anything that’s going on there. It would be stupid of them. It’s only people who can help.
Only people. Normal people who can see clearly that what is happening is not right. People who genuinely have empathy and care. And it’s by people being informed and knowing about things that are happening and demanding action from their governments and the UN, that things will change. And they will.
Things will change, and they will get better. We just all have to take part. Nothing happens if people don’t care.

Quote
People told us they felt abandoned, by the Taliban government and the international community. Hunger is a slow and silent killer, its effects not always immediately visible. Away from the attention of the world, the scale of the crisis in Afghanistan might never truly come to light, because no one is counting.

More than 2,000 Afghan migrants returned from Iran in 24 hours
The Taliban-led Ministry of Refugees released figures that 2,123 migrants returned to Afghanistan on Monday, 4 December.
According to the Ministry, those migrants were either deported or returned voluntarily, having entered the country through the border town of Islam Qala in Herat.
As of 3 December, 1,860 Afghan migrants had returned through the same border town of Islam Qala in Herat.
This steady flow of returning Afghan immigrants follows a pattern observed over the past week, with an average of at least 2,000 Afghan migrants returning from Iran to Afghanistan per day. This movement indicates a continuing change in the dynamics of migration between the two countries.

Should the U.S. Modify Its Stance Against the Taliban in Afghanistan?
As discussed in a prior post, on August 22, 2023, the U.N. Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) reported that since the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan in August 2021, it had committed at least 800 human rights violations against Afghans who had assisted the U.S. In addition, that U.N. agency also noted that the Taliban had imposed the most radical gender policies, denying education and…

Afghans Are Facing Another Crisis Abroad: The Refugee Crisis
When the Taliban took over, he lost his job. For several months he searched for a new job, but he couldn’t find one. He says that compared to the previous months which there were hundreds of jobs per day, it was only 3 to 4 jobs a day. Thus, he faced a lot of economic problems, not being able to support himself or his family. He says that he could find a job, but they offered him only 5000 AFN per month which wouldn’t even cover the taxi or bus fare for a month. Ahmad tried several times to leave the country. The university and the organizations he worked for promised to evacuate him, but it didn’t happen. He says that “they just left us behind or they selected students based on their preferences.” “The availability of a job is another problem. Here they are not going to hire you if you don't know their language. Even in the free job market or the street job, one needs to have basic language proficiency” says Ahmad. Ahmad says that he hopes the international community helps those inside Afghanistan and those who have left Afghanistan either legally or illegally, particularly those who left illegally face an even harder situation. They left for Pakistan five days after the Taliban took over. They had to stay additional four nights in Kandahar, a southern province of Afghanistan that shares routes with Quetta, Pakistan through the Spin-Buldak border. Refugees are afraid not to be caught by police officers in Pakistan. One of his friends was arrested by police. Police ask refugees where they are from and if Afghan, they ask for money. If they don’t give them money, the police will arrest them without any legal reason. He says that the international community already knows what is happening inside Afghanistan. They should act. He was trying to leave the country but due to the chaos at the Kabul airport, he couldn’t. He states that “after the evacuation was completed, I was pessimistic.” The organizations that he worked for, promised him support but didn’t do anything practical. He had an India visa, but it was invalidated online. When in Pakistan, he says that “in one year’s, time, I only had one initial interview and nothing else. No email, no support, no protection. I sent hundreds of emails until I got my case. After a year and after a lot of follow-ups and a lot of documentation and providing a lot of evidence we were evacuated to the UK last week.” Alizai says that “Afghanistan from the last 40 years was forgotten. The international community should really consider the situation of Afghanistan and its people, otherwise, the land may become a ground for international terrorism and drug – something that will be out of their control tomorrow. They should realize this reality and act as soon as possible.” By: Susan Azizi Read the full article

World urged to help Afghanistan deal with worst-ever food crisis – SUCH TV
Experts blamed poor Taliban governance and international policies for the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan where more than 90 percent of the households go hungry, says a report published on Monday. The UN World Food Programme (WFP) has already described this as “the worst humanitarian crisis on Earth” while the international community still ponders how to help Afghans without benefiting the…

Pakistan:
Strongly condemning Israel's assault on the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip, Pakistan said Monday that Tel Aviv is in violation of measures ordered by the UN's top court last month.
The Maldives:
The Maldives on Monday also strongly condemned Israel's "threats to launch a full-scale invasion" on Rafah city. "The forced displacement and inhumane attacks against innocent Palestinians and the obstruction of humanitarian assistance by the Israeli occupation forces is against international laws and regulations and tantamount to war crimes," the said a Foreign Ministry statement from the capital Male.
Afghanistan:
The interim Taliban administration in Afghanistan also joined the chorus against the Israeli attacks on Rafah. "The continuation of brutality of Zionist forces on Rafah city will cause a major disaster and make the ongoing crisis spiral out," the Foreign Ministry in Kabul said.
China:
China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson said that Israel’s actions in Rafah harm civilians and violate international law. China opposed and condemned Israel’s Rafah actions and it is closely following the developments in the Rafah area. It further urged Israel to stop its military operation as soon as possible and warned of a ‘serious humanitarian disaster’ if Israel continues its ground offensive in Rafah.
Venezuela:
In a statement, the Venezuelan Foreign Affairs Ministry condemned "the actions taken by the Government of Israel within the framework of the expansion of the military offensive in the Gaza Strip toward Rafah, in the far south. "The statement added that this "Israeli Zionist plan aims to continue implementing its criminal and expansionist policy in this area that is home to more than one million four hundred thousand displaced Palestinians."

In 2020, Uma Mirkhail got a firsthand demonstration of how damaging a bad translation can be. A crisis translator specializing in Afghan languages, Mirkhail was working with a Pashto-speaking refugee who had fled Afghanistan. A U.S. court had denied the refugee’s asylum bid because her written application didn’t match the story told in the initial interviews. In the interviews, the refugee had first maintained that she’d made it through one particular event alone, but the written statement seemed to reference other people with her at the time — a discrepancy large enough for a judge to reject her asylum claim. After Mirkhail went over the documents, she saw what had gone wrong: An automated translation tool had swapped the “I” pronouns in the woman’s statement to “we.” (...) Whether automated or not, translation flubs in Pashto and Dari have become commonplace. As recently as early April, the German Embassy to Afghanistan posted a tweet in Pashto decrying the Taliban’s ban on women working. The tweet was quickly ridiculed by native speakers, with some quote tweets claiming that not a single sentence was legible. “Kindly please don’t insult our language. Thousands [of] Pashtun are living in Germany but still they don’t hire an expert for Pashto,” posted one user, researcher Afzal Zarghoni. The German Embassy later deleted the tweet. Seemingly trivial translation errors can sometimes lead to harmful distortions when drafting asylum applications.
#ai#tech#asylum#abolish borders#pol#obviously the issue here is far deeper than ai or machine translation but man this is so depressing

Kentucky Legalizes Medical Marijuana in Bipartisan Vote After Decade of Failed Attempts
The state of Kentucky has legalized the use of medical marijuana. The bill received final passage on Thursday. Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear signed it into law Friday morning after a decade of failed attempts in the state legislature.
The news makes Kentucky at least the 38th state in the U.S. to legalize medical marijuana.
Now Indiana is surrounded by weed states. The encirclement is complete 😂
2. The Maryland House of Delegates voted Saturday to approve the Trans Health Equity Act
The Maryland House of Delegates voted Saturday to approve the Trans Health Equity Act — a bill that just a year ago disappeared from the chamber’s agenda ahead of a floor vote.
The bill would require Maryland Medicaid, beginning on Jan. 1, 2024, to provide coverage for additional gender-affirming treatments, which are currently disallowed in the state’s plan but commonly covered by private insurance. The expanded treatments include hormone therapy, hair alteration, voice therapy, physical alterations to the body, and fertility preservation.
3. FDA approves over-the-counter Narcan. Here's what it means
The approved nasal spray is the best-known form of naloxone. It can reverse overdoses of opioids, including street drugs such as heroin and fentanyl and prescription versions including oxycodone.
Making naloxone available more widely is seen as a key strategy to control the nationwide overdose crisis. Effects begin within two minutes when given intravenously, and within five minutes when injected into a muscle. The medicine can also be administered by spraying it into a person's nose.
4. Boston expands tuition-free community college program to all residents
Boston has expanded its tuition-free community college program to include all city residents regardless of age, income or immigration status.
Starting this fall, any city resident will be eligible to pursue an associate’s degree or certificate at one of six partnering local institutions without paying to attend. The program also includes a $250 stipend for incidental expenses each semester for up to three years, and up to $2,500 of debt relief for students whose account balances are keeping them from re-enrolling.
5. First cheetah cubs born in India since extinction 70 years ago
India has welcomed the birth of four cheetah cubs - more than 70 years after the animals were declared officially extinct there.India's environment minister announced the good news, calling it a "momentous event".
The country has been trying to reintroduce the big cats for decades, and last year brought eight cheetahs over from Namibia as part of the plan. Another 12 cheetahs were brought to India from South Africa last month.
6. BBC education show in Afghanistan helps children banned from school
The BBC has launched a new education programme for children in Afghanistan who are banned from school. It is aimed at children aged 11 to 16, including girls whose secondary education has been stopped by the ruling Taliban.
The weekly programme is called Dars, which means lesson in Dari and Pashto, Afghanistan's official languages. It is hosted by BBC Afghan female journalists who were evacuated from Kabul during the 2021 Taliban takeover.
Each new weekly half-hour episode of Dars will air four times a day, Saturday to Friday, on the newly launched BBC News Afghanistan channel.
7. A Trans Creator Has Raised Over 1.5 Million for Trans Healthcare on TikTok Live
Transgender TikTokers are celebrating Trans Day of Visibility by raising over $1.5 million for gender-affirming care around the world.
Mercury Stardust — a DIY TikToker and trans advocate who calls herself the “Trans Handy Ma’am” — raised $120,000 last year in a livestream for the mutual aid nonprofit Point of Pride, which maintains funds for surgeries, hormone therapy, and free binders and gaffs. This year, Stardust and cohost Jory, a.k.a. AlluringSkull, set themselves a goal of raising $1 million in a planned 30-hour live stream…and then smashed that milestone less than six hours after starting the stream Thursday evening.

I say this as someone who obviously opposes the Vietnam war, the war in Afghanistan, and the current war in I/p, but I think a lot of Americans including one I was just talking to haven’t got a lot of comprehension that it sure took the uS a lot longer than five months for public opinion to shift strongly away from supporting any of the above, but furthermore - we dont fucking KNOW what the us gov or us public would do or support if they had a hostage crisis with hundreds of us civilians being held by the viet cong or taliban or Sinaloa cartel for months on end, with significant evidence of that group committing sexual assault, within kilometers of where Americans lived. This is not an equivalent thing thing that has ever happened to the us and for the sake of world peace we can be glad it never has, but it’s truly beyond our comprehension what the US (or uk or Canada and such) might do
#A lot of people seem not to grasp that I has incredibly disproportionate power and security relative to p in this situation#But neither is in any way comparable to the middle class white American level of safety#(Relative. There are other issues like gun control etc etc)#But like. It’s apples to oranges you have no idea what the us gov would do if like.#There were rockets periodically exploding over small town USA#The upper middle class residents of dc all had safety rooms in ther apartments#You don’t. Know
