References to Previous Final Fantasies in Dawntrail

Or, how 9 + 11 + 6 = 14, somehow. (SPOILERS, OBVIOUSLY)

I've played every mainline FF, plus a few others, so one of my favorite things about playing XIV is seeing what they do with previous FFs, and how they incorporate it into the world/story. Dawntrail very very much did this, to the point that I could literally predict plot points before they happened. (THIS IS NOT A COMPLAINT I LOVED THIS)

So I figured I would put down my fanboying in text form, for people to read the insanity of a madman who has played too many JRPGs from a single series.

Note: I have not completed every single side quest, but I have done the entire MSQ, every dungeon, and 3/5 of the role quests. This isn't a complete collection, just what I noticed :)

Krile's "real name" is Maya. The original Krile in FFV was Krile Meyer Baldesion. (XIV might also have the middle name but I don't remember! I'm gonna put it here regardless!)

VI

Valigarmanda is the first Esper you encounter in VI, right at the start of the game. Its summon attack is Tri-Disaster. I really liked how they kept it frozen in ice, just like the original, and because Tri-Disaster is a SMN ability, they changed it to Tulidisaster to fit the Tural location.

Pictomancer was first in VI as well, being Relm's job. She even got to be in XIV as well, being credited as the Archon who created the art (HA). Shoutouts to the Relm reborn joke it needed to happen

IX

One of the two most important games in this expansion. There is A Lot here.

The preorder bonus/deluxe edition had a Wind-Up Zidane and Garnet, the two main protagonists of FFIX.

Alexandria is lifted directly from IX. The name, the style of the buildings, and even the castle with the crystal popping out of the top, shown in the dungeon and in Yesterland in Living Memory.

(This is the Dissidia NT version, but I wanted a picture that showed the castle and the roof architecture)

Solution Nine is named after one of Zidane's Dyne abilities. While not direct, Living Memory, the final zone, is very reminiscent of Memoria, the final dungeon of IX. I wonder if you can get a special sword by completing the entire MSQ in under 2 hours?

Living Memory also features quite a few locations from IX. The Canal Town looks very similar to Treno, and features a location called the Daguerreo Medical Collection, named after the city as well. Underneath Proto Alexandria in Yesterland, where the data terminal lies, looks very similar to the part of Alexandria Castle where Steiner can grind to level 99 (I don't know how else to describe it if you know you know). In the Windspath Gardens lies the Cleyra Museum of Nature, also named after the IX city.

Some quest text in Living Memory tells you about other locations in the Unlost World. Lindblum, the city that holds hunts and is very technologically advanced; Conde Petie, where the Dwarves are from (mentioned by a Milalla who said he was from there), and the Iifa Tree. There might even be more here, that I either missed or haven't done yet.

Another quest has you go on a treasure hunt for a password. This password? "I Want to Be Your Canary", the play from FFIX.

Solution Nine has a couple buildings with monsters from IX as signs. One building features a Mu (Which is also mentioned in Living Memory), and another building features Yans, both friendly and not friendly.

Another monster that I noticed a reference to was the Gimme Cat, which is featured on the popcorn in Living Memory. It's also mentioned as an energy drink, but called a "Gimme Bat" instead? I guess it does have bat wings.

While XIV doesn't have any direct plot important characters from IX, the ones we do have are very reminiscent of its cast, and clearly are done like that on purpose.

Otis is Steiner (with maybe a little tiny bit of Beatrix depending on how you look at it). Captain of the Knights of Alexandria, he speaks in an older fashion, similar to Steiner, and is very loyal to his princess.

Sphene is an interesting mix. The most obvious one is Garnet, both being Queens of Alexandria, being named after stones, and loving their people. The other one, which might be argued isn't intended, is Garland.

(No, not those guys. The other one.)

Garland in IX is an artificial being whose purpose is to continue his world's life. To do this, he would try to fuse Terra (his planet), with Gaia (the main planet), and control Gaian souls for Terra instead. What did Sphene do? Try to fuse her reflection with the Source, to use their souls for her own people. I personally think this is a very clear similarity.

In general, because of this similarity, the latter half of Dawntrail shares very similar themes with IX's plots, dealing with death and souls. I also think it's pretty funny that both start out pretty happy and cartoony, and end fairly depressing and existential.

Another plot point used in the MSQ is the play sequence. While IX's is based off love, and XIV's is the history of Alexandria, both feature a sword fight scene. (99 out of 100 nobles approve).

Finally, several songs from IX are used in Dawntrail. In the above mentioned play, Swords of Fury plays, just like the original. And a few scenes later, Vamo'alla Flamenco (previously used for the DNC quests) plays, though it should have been during the sword fight!! Prima Vista Orchestra and Fleeting Life are used in several scenes, usually involving Sphene. Something to Protect also appears, but in a scene I can't recall. Finally, the Court Jesters' theme gets a remix as the main song in the Strayborough Deadwalk.

There is a singular joke in Heritage Found made about dodging lightning bolts right before the flash so they don't hit you. The person who wrote this line wanted to induce PTSD in as many people as they could with only a single line of dialogue.

XI

The other most important game in the expansion. In a way, Dawntrail FEELS like it could have been an XI expansion in another lifetime. I might be looking too much into it, but I feel as though this was foreshadowed back in the first patch of Endwalker, as Dawntrail takes A LOT from the Treasures of Aht Urhgan expansion.

In Endwalker, the Alzadaal's Legacy dungeon was based off of the Alzadaal Underwater Ruins in Aht Urhgan. The dungeon used many models from XI, such as the Rampart, the Xzomit (hell yes!), and the Acrolith. The dungeon had a visual similarity, as well as the areas in the dungeon being named after zones in Aht Urhgan (Bhaflau Thickets, Arrapago Reef, and Mount Zhayolm). I know this is Endwalker and not Dawntrail but trust me it's important for the foreshadowing.

Gulool Ja Ja was a boss in the Besieged mode of ToAU, leading the Mamool Ja Savages to assault Al Zahbi. Both incarnations of this character are VERY different from each other.

Similarly, Gurfurlur was also a boss in Besieged, leading the Troll Mercenaries. It's very funny to me that both of these warmongers became such nice people in Tural.

The Yok Huy as a whole are actually Trolls from XI. The different name I assume coming from the fact that Trolls are already an enemy in XIV, in Labyrinthos.

While this isn't direct, and is probably unintentional, the fact that the final boss in Vanguard was a naga/lamia like entity only makes me wonder if it was somehow a callback to Medusa and the Undead Swarm, the last remaining Besieged invaders.

Zoraal Ja is a Notorious Monster in the areas around Aht Urhgan.

To continue on with Mamool Ja facts, Mamook is an area in ToAU. They don't look very similar, but they do both share the title of Autarch as their ruler. Mamool Ja in general come from XI, so it's no surprise that in the expansion that well, expands on them, it uses XI for inspiration.

This next one might be a little insane. The general plot of Treasures of Aht Urhgan, is that after killing Promathia, a god that wishes to end all life, the Adventurer goes to a completely different area to have a relatively calmer adventure. Here, they meet a female member of royalty named Aphmau. Her brother, Razfahd, unable to rule over the country, has a conquering nature, and uses an Automaton body to control Alexander for his goals. This... can't be a coincidence, right?? We kill the Endsinger, who wanted to end all life, go to a completely different area to have a relatively calmer adventure with our female member of royalty, Wuk Lamat, and we fight against Zoraal Ja, her war hungry brother that is unable to rule, so he uses the power of Alexandria (a mech suit) for his goals. You... you see what I'm cooking here right??? RIGHT!?!?!

To piggyback off of this, Wuk Lamat very much fits the role of the XI heroine. A girl who is very clearly the main character of the story, and hangs around you more than anyone else.

Edit: one last thing that I forgot to put down before posting, one of the hunts uses the Magic Pot model from XI. We love Magic Pot.

I THINK that should be everything I found? I know for a fact we're going to get more since the Alliance Raids are based of off XI (I'm so excited)

XIII

A couple enemy models were used from XIII.

The Silver Lobos in Urqopacha use the XIII model. I'm fairly sure they've never been used in XIV yet, but I could be wrong.

Similarly, the Strayborough Deadwalk uses the Gremlin/Ahriman enemies. I do not think they've been used before this, feel free to yell at me if I'm wrong :)

Type-0

While not like, direct, the concept of erasing the memories of anyone who has died (especially seen as a blessing) was a major plot point of Type-0's world.

I think that's everything? My memory isn't the greatest, so I'm sure there's something I noticed that I missed, and again; I haven't done everything, so there might be even more out there that I've yet to find!

Hero of Two Worlds by Mike Duncan. Goes over Lafayette's life in both France and America. It is funny that America counts him as a founding father but in life he was kind of a loser in France. Dune. I wish I was joking. I watched the two movies, couldn't get it out of my head, my dad has an old copy and let me borrow it. I am very slowly working through it.

1. Are you named after anyone?

Yes and no. No in a way that I’d be named after anyone special, and yes in a way that my grandmother named me - and she named me with the exact same name as her brother named his daughter. So my, uh, great cousin(?) and I shared fully identical names for some time.

2. When was the last time you cried?

Good thing, I don’t remember! :3 Not that there’s nothing wrong with crying, for me it just means that things are easier when there’s no need for release through tears.

3. Do you have kids?

No.

4. Do you use sarcasm a lot?

Not much, I think. I’m not really the one joking, which is a shame for my roots as my people DO use sarcastic humor a lot. It’s a national trait. I think sarcasm is a delightful form of jokes but it needs to be delivered at the right time, in the right company, for it to work and not turn into something negative.

6. What's your eye color?

Grey

7. Scary movies or happy endings?

PFFFT there aren’t movies scary enough for me. I think happy endings are nice in a world where so many want to tell stories with shocking endings, whether it really fits the narrative or not. A well delivered shocking ending or a twist? Now THAT’S something to love!

8. Any special talents?

Weirdly enough I can tell the time without looking at the clock, by 10-15 minutes. Every hour feels different and every half pass hours feel different, too. If I can’t tell the time like this, even when waking up, it means I’m exhausted or sick somehow and need rest.

Collecting stickers, studying Japanese, drawing, tasting different ice-creams, listening to paranormal and near-death experience podcast, watching paranormal documentaries (whenever they are new good ones), buying more books than I can read lol.

No. Never had. I move often and stay part of each year away from home, and when I travel I travel for weeks. It would be unfair for a pet so I don’t have any.

12. What sports do you play/have played?

I tried naginata (Japanese spear) but a) there were no lessons for beginners with no experience of any martial arts and b) anemia is a bitch. I went to taiji once, too. I wish I was a sporty person but I’m not. It’s hard to be sporty when you’re chronically ill.

In art school I loved art performance studies the best. In school, I enjoyed drama lessons. An ode to Given

A few days ago the internet collectively freaked out - myself included - when it was announced that the next chapter of Given would be the final chapter, ending its 10-year run. I'm honestly still in shock and while I'm trying to stay optimistic that maybe the big announcement that's coming with the final chapter will involve some kind of sequel, a second season of the anime seems more likely. It's difficult coming to terms with the fact that I may have to say goodbye to a series that I love so much, and with an ending that I most likely will not find satisfying. Regardless, Given has taken up a huge space in my heart for the past two years and I just wanted to write about how I found it, my experience with it, and what it means to me.

I've enjoyed manga and anime ever since I was in middle school, but toward the end of college I got too busy to keep up. Fast forward to years later in 2020, I was stuck at home during the pandemic and decided to dive back in. After rewatching a BL anime that I really liked in high school, Given came up as a suggested series. A quick Google search told me that it was a great romance story between boys in a band, cool.

The first episode starts with Mafuyu's melancholy monologue about the dream he keeps on having and I see right off the bat that I've signed up for a bit more than a cute love story with music. Then the opening song Kizuato hits and I'm totally captivated. It's probably one of my favorite opening sequences and truly captures the feel of the series with its hard-hitting instrumentals, Cenmilli's emotional vocals, and the moody art.

The series pace is on the slower side but there was enough drama and intrigue to keep pulling me in, and it's full of comedic gold. And then... episode 9, A Winter Story. It shook me to my core, everything about it was absolutely amazing. Ue's talk with Mafuyu before the show where he admits that even he doesn't know what he is doing or how to express himself, all he knows is that he loves Mafuyu's sound. The song itself, interspersed with flashbacks of Mafuyu and Yuki's relationship and Mafuyu's monologue (his "I'm lonely" is truly devastating, major props to Yano Shogo). THE KISS. A genuine surprise, so quick and so gentle from inexperienced Ue. I had to watch the episode twice because it left me in complete awe and I needed to experience it again. Then episodes 10-11 were the perfect wind-down with a lot of cute and legendary moments, aka Ue experiencing increasing levels of gay panic. The series became an instant favorite and I rewatched it immediately. I can't find the words to properly express what it did to me but it just made me feel so many things, things I don't think I've felt for a long time. I couldn't shake it.

After that, I was still hungry for more Given so I read the manga, which is a totally different and wonderful experience. The art is beautiful, and the way Kizu-sensei portrays emotions through the characters' facial expressions is unparalleled. Soon after that, the movie came to Crunchyroll, and I've been keeping up with the series in every form since. I read the chapters as they come out bi-monthly. I watched the drama adaptation (not great but not the worst I've seen). I watched the OVA many times (my favorite, all the precious RitsuMafu moments I was missing from the movie). I splurged on a second-hand DVD set of the stage play (really well done). I even watched the anime dub (tolerable), and I hate dubs. Rereading and rewatching the series are routine. Safe to say, it's consumed me for two years and the flame has not died down one bit.

Lots of fans joke about referring to Given as our comfort series when it actually hits on a lot of heavy topics and has eviscerated our emotions on more than one occasion. But it truly is my comfort place. Just as I had finished watching the anime for the first time, I lost a very close friend to illness. This friend was a fellow anime/manga enthusiast and was probably the one who introduced me to the world of BL. Although she didn't watch Given, I like to think that it could have been something we would have enjoyed together if we had the time. And although the circumstances are different, I could relate to Mafuyu prematurely losing an important person in his life. Because the story is equal parts pain and healing, Given kind of provided me with a space where I could dump all of the emotions I was experiencing, whether they were happy or sad. It taught me about loss, grief, and above all, the way music and love can heal the wounds that these things have left behind.

I also have to speak separately about the music of Given, it's just so well done, with so much care and attention to detail. You can tell that Cenmilli worked closely with Kizu-sensei or really dived into the source material when working on the music. Every song created for the series relates very clearly to an event or element of the story. I could write praises upon praises for all of them, but some of my favorites include:

Fuyu no Hanashi, for obvious reasons. Yano Shogo's raw vocals are haunting and the guitar riffs are insanely cool. The way the lyrics change from Mafuyu being stuck and unable to say goodbye in the first chorus, to finally moving forward despite that in the last chorus, show that he's getting the closure he needed.

Kizuato - The lyrics perfectly express the series' tagline "can't say goodbye, I'm still drifting with your echoes." And the pre-chorus is so, so good.

Hetakuso - A simple but insanely sweet song that is definitely Mafuyu's response to Ue's admission that he is bad at expressing himself. I squealed when I saw the lyrics mention "covered by the heat of summer" and "not being afraid of the next winter" in reference to the two of them.

Bokura dake no Shudaika - As I read the lyrics, I can't tell if the song is referencing Akihiko and Ugetsu's relationship or Akihiko and Haruki's (maybe it's both), but I actually like that ambiguity. I also love how it beautifully incorporates the violin as a salute to Aki and Ugetsu.

Uragawa no Sonzai - I know Mafuyu is singing the song but I like to think of it from Ue's perspective. He is aware that there is a side to Mafuyu that he doesn't know, his past, a time when he cried, a person he cried over. Now that the series is coming to an end, I don't know what I'll do with myself. If it's truly ending for good, I do have my complaints, but I'll save that for another time. No matter what though, Given is solidified as one of my top anime/manga series of all time, and I'm sure I'll keep revisiting it over the years even after it's finished. It's given me so much - joy (RitsuMafu soft moments are my serotonin), sorrow (Strawberry Swing, anyone?), laughs (too many to count), and some of my favorite music - and for that, I'm incredibly thankful.

I actually have my own space fact/theory. Idk if it’s weird but yknow screw you. I heard about this theory that since black holes exist and suck everything in, that white holes also exist and just spew random crap out. My theory is that somehow these holes can get connected and spawn very very far away from eachother and every so often a white hole will form outside the universe and the spewed stuff creates a new universe and that’s how multiverses are created :)

Technically, I am very purposefully not named after anyone because my mother thought there were too many Julia’s in the family so she picked a different J.

2. When was the last time you cried?

HAHAHAH Monday and Tuesday because I thought I was going to get fired for forgetting to call out sick on Thursday/Friday. I am a people pleaser to my core. (I was not fired and I apologized maybe 8 times over two days.)

3. Do you have kids?

Because of the age gap (mind you it’s only 12 and 14 years, but when you change diapers and go on field trips it feels like they’re yours), I joke that my youngest cousins are my kids. But no, I am childless. 

4. Do you use sarcasm a lot?

Mmm. Sometimes.

5. What's the first thing you notice about people?

Probably their height and if we’re the same height or they’re taller. I think being under 5’5” gives people a complex. In this essay I will….

I danced from 2 until 23(?), volleyball from 12-14 and I wish I had kept it up longer but the politics of high school volleyball on top of the Poms schedule just wasn’t worth it. I also used to play baseball in the backyard with my brother and dad. My dad played in the minors and my brother got through college on baseball and now coaches. I haven’t played in ages and kinda wanna start again.

10. How tall are you?

5′3.5″ the half inch is very important to me.

In college I think the best class I ever took were the music classes about the history of rock and roll or popular music. But I also really enjoyed my classes on Black Girlhood and Politics of Sexuality in the African American Diaspora studies department and my Black/Jewish relations class. For how long it took me to finish you’d think I hated college, but I took some truly interesting courses. I was just shit at fighting my own mental health to push through in four years. Wow that was not the question. Moving on....

12. Dream job?

I was in singing and acting lessons for a minute hoping to get back into the performing arts. But, I’d really like to create things that people enjoy and can form a community around in a non creepy way.

Magitober 2022 Catch-up #2

Look, I’m doing my best here, it’s not my fault psych meds knock you out cold better than an old grandmother with a rolling pin.

Anyways, I scanned these as well, and tried to crop them best I could. A number of these are just concept sketches, ‘cause if I actually tried give them justice, we’d be here until next year.

I’m skipping past Day 6, because I didn’t even finish the concepts for these. I’ll be posting the finished items in December instead, to coincide with a different celebration. If I can get them done in time, that is. Moving on!

Day 7 - Favourite event

So, my favorite event is actually Beachside Bonds, but since it seems like a number of other folks also chose that event, I went with my second favorite event instead: Otsukimi is After an Elegant Tea Party. This is only the rough scene layout, showing the track behind Mizuna Girl’s School, with the figure in the foreground standing in for Yukika, the event’s main character. Eventually I’ll get around to drawing the scene in its entirety, but not today.

Day 8 - Historical magical girl

I double-checked earlier that historically-themed magical girls could be used for this prompt, ‘cause a) I didn’t want to draw Tart characters twice, and b) I didn’t want to draw Tsuyu or Chizuru, their designs are so damned complex. I do love the Tokime, though, so I picked one of the units I don’t actually have, Ryoko. She doesn’t look feisty enough here, though, I feel. Whoops.

(Skipping Day 9, ‘Create a Doppel’, because I don’t have the slightest clue how to go about doing that.)

Day 10 - Oriko Magica

Oriko’s hat looks like a bucket to me, so have Oriko’s true final form: Oribucket! Yes, I’m very funny.

Day 11 - Favourite non-magical girl

Yes, it’s Tasuke, big surprise. I guess I’m fond of that exact brand of very tired dad who ends up involved with a larger cause that their kid also ends up a part of. (Points if you can guess any other characters that fall into that description!)

Anywho, earlier I joked in the Discord about a playable unit, except it’s just Tasuke throwing something ‘cause he doesn’t have a weapon exactly. I wanna do an actual fake card art at some point for this, because it’s too funny to me. So have these sketches in the meantime.

Day 12 - Create an Alt

Another one I mentioned (and actually uploaded) on Discord, but here we have Seika, Sailor version! There’s lots of small notes on this one explaining the specific details, but in a broader sense, I modeled her altered design here off of old-time sailors, specifically those found around the Aran Islands, which are shown with the cabled sweater mostly hidden beneath the overcoat (whoops!), and the scarf in aptly named “fisherman’s rib”. Her weapon is a modified belaying pin, which are used to hold down rigging to the ship’s sides. I’ll have to work on its design a bit, but I do plan once again to do a better drawing of this at some point, ‘cause a number of y’all in the Discord seemed to like it.

That’s all I’ve got strictly finished for now. I’m going to keep chugging away at the prompts, but I’ve got the feeling that my entries are going to extend well into November.

4. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

Nearly always yeah. I like the people who read my work and overcome whatever anxiety they might feel to know that I appreciate anything they have to say, and I'm grateful.

5. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

I enjoy angst a fair bit but rarely do I ever write something that ends with angst. Obviously, Game Over was expressly written as a bad end to a v3 au i was working on, so it's the easy answer, but there are a few in the oumasai oneshots that I think count, namely Chapter 22, Chapter 24, Chapter 26, and in more ambiguous turf Chapter 19 and Chapter 15. I still like the ambiguous ones a fair bit even now, the first 2 not-ambiguous ones just do not hold up with my interpretation of the text anymore (and also i wrote worse), but 26 is fine. Game Over could have been better, but hey I was a different writer then.

That said I have a lot of stuff I consider heavy on angst, but since they have happy endings I don't think they count for this. But I enjoy that kind of fic the most.

6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?

the ones I haven't finished yet--/gets shot. Nah, probably Le Chasseur et le Démon (The Hunter and the Fiend), because it's a fairytale. It gets a fairytale ending. But I like happy endings so it's pretty hard for me to pick.

7. Do you write crossovers?

No because I tend not to like them and find them obtuse, UNLESS said crossover is between dangan ronpa and Higurashi. No I could not explain why these two things in specific inspired me this much. But also I'm SO right and one day I'll get back to those. But mostly crossover concepts exist in jokes in dms with my friend Cass.

8. Have you ever received hate on a fic?

Yep lmao. A couple times. It's been pretty lackluster though like solid 2/10 hate comment y'all can do better.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

No? Okay so I did orphan a series of fics that had smut in them, but that smut was kind of poetic and deliberately vague, and it's probably the most I plan on committing to in the future for the fics I'm working on rn.

I think people who write pwp or other hard smut are very impressive and have a set of skills I lack, namely....the ability to express physical intimacy in any capacity, including through words! I honestly like. Still struggle with kiss scenes sometimes, but for me all this comes down to my visceral irl discomfort with people existing within 3 feet of me, nevermind touching me.

10. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

I sure the fuck hope not.

I don't remember if this happened with a fic, but iirc I think someone translated that long ass DR meta I wrote about Ouma and Komaeda into...Russian? I don't remember very well. Also that meta is being majorly overhauled spoilers I guess.

Not for fic no. All my fic belong solely to me, as do my original works, and its what I prefer. I've done volunteer writing on other people's original projects however, even right now. @clusterfuck-au is something I work on with my friend Wren, but I do all the writing, and they do art stuff, so its not the same lmao.

13. What’s your all-time favorite ship?

Idk how I'm supposed to have one of these when I can't really pick a fandom over a fandom. So I'll just name some fandoms I like, and the ship I currently like the most for it.

The Long Way 'Round: This is supposed to be an extremely long narumitsu Ace fanfic about their relationship through the years from their time together in childhood to after Apollo Justice. I have a lot of thoughts and feelings about their relationship, its ups and downs, and the character development they undergo together and seperately. The fic would not feature anything actually shown in canon, and doesn't include DD or SoJ because I hate them and think they're bad and disowned them from canon. This fic is next on my list of things to work on.

Exoneration AU and the LCC rewrite: aus that only makes sense to anyone who has ever read the visual novel Chaos;Child and is in fandom (maybe 100 people) and ALSO is gay enough to ship Takuru, the main character of a bishoujo game, with Shinji (his token best friend). Also has to be gay enough to ship the girls together. also has to be based enough to think Kawahara deserved better and are mad about the writer's gaslighting. I'm not going to explain the plot of these any further; y'all aint gonna get it.

The Cries of Hope's Peak Academy: AKA, clusterfuck AU. What if I took the higurashi cast and put them in a pre-despair dangan ronpa setting (also the v3 kids are here too). Also. What if I shipped. Mion with Keiichi, Hinata, and Ikusaba, Keiichi with Ouma, Kamukura and Saihara, Ouma with Kamukura and Saihara, Kamukura with Komaeda, Komaeda with Hinata, and Hinata with Saihara. This is the titular clusterfuck; they are a polycule in progress. Its not even the only ship. The plot though is inspired by all that I wished Dangan Ronpa 3: Despair Arc was, with Enoshima taking advantage of vulnerable people via manipulation and HPA's inherent powderkeg, but with higurashi's thematic core.

Higurashi: When They Cry - Uso (Lies) and what would be its answer arc counterpart I haven't named yet: The other crossover fic. This one is just. What if I yeeted Ouma into the Higurashi setting like it was where he belonged. What would happen. It's Higurashi, so it borrows a lot from its overarching story and arc ideas, but every arc would be a unique twist based on the existence of a new guy in there! I still like this a lot. I still think of every character in dangan ronpa, Ouma feels the most like the one who would belong in Higurashi, and stands the most to gain from it.

The Klav/Seb enemies to lovers fic: it's exactly what it sounds like. I just think they have a lot in common but their themis years would absolutely be filled with PETTY beef because seb is a nepotism baby which pisses Klav off, and seb doesn't know he's a nepotism baby so he doesn't understand what the fuck his problem is. Also Apollo is there later. Klavier has 2 hands.

Pewter in a timeloop for aitsf and he gets a buddy cop dynamic with Iris on his looping quest to save renju. yeah that. that's the jist. also includes REHABILITATING THE OKIURA HOUSEHOLD AAAAAAA

I have some oneshots I haven't written yet, but those don't count. If you're aware of a long fic/series I was working on that isn't listed here....sorry but I think I've grown past those ideas.

I have two WIPs that are original, but I still work on those. They're both visual novel concepts I came up with, and they both mean everything in the world to me.

15. What are your writing strengths?

Fanfic specific strengths, I'm great at being in character. Translated more broadly, strong dialogue and internal narration coupled with actions and behaviors that reflect their emotional core.

I think my narration is at its best when it's just sitting inside some messy bitch's head and living out their entire thought process, and I think my background in poetry really adds to that. I like using line breaks and font sizes/alignments/effects to express intensity or disarray, etc. I do that for dialogue too. Also I'm pretty fucking funny in both places when I want to be. I think it adds to the charm, and I think my authorial voice adds to that.

Also tbh I'm so good at structuring and pacing frankly I think I'm a natural at it. I think my scenes are as long as they need to be, my stories hit every necessary beat, every scene and story ends and begins on the correct note, and readers learn things when they need to. Pacing and structure is not really something people think a lot about when they get asked this question, but I think it's the most important element to any story. If your pacing, your narrative structure is broken, no amount of metaphor and poetic description can save you.

16. What are your writing weaknesses?

God forbid I have to describe a physical thing. Forget it. Not actions per se (although sometimes yeah those too, but more like clothes, settings, sounds, smells, tastes--that's a real struggle. I always think its the weakest thing I have to offer, and a lot of my writing process is desperately trying to put the image in my brain into words that make sense and sound good. Definitely the biggest weakness I have no fucking contest holy shit.

Other smaller struggles is a tendency to overuse words like just/maybe/really/still/etc; the problem with having a strong voice is that some of the quirks from my way of TALKING don't actually add anything to narration or the dialogue, so I've been training myself to cut back and cut things out. It can lead to things being repetitive.

Also, while I believe I have a lot of killer ideas that slap 10/10, and I'm a very creative person, the ADHD makes it hard to keep working on ideas even when I love them. The smallest thing stumping me, or boring me, or just kind of draining my sole, can get me not writing for weeks. I guess this is an ADHD problem, but it affects writing, my one true love, and in some ways that makes it the real biggest issue.

17. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

I think it's fine depending on how you do it. If you put a note at the end translating all the lines in other languages, or fit the translation smoothly within the narrative, I think that's completely legal.

With that said, I do kinda cringe when instead of writing Japanese someone types out just. romaji. I get that you want your audience to know how to read it, but they're likely not to know what it means anyway even IN romaji, so just commit. Go for authenticity. You can put the pronunciation in your footnotes too.

Pokemon in my spiral notebook in 5th grade. It's still pokemon online cause I made an illegal ffn account and moved it there at age 11. You can't read it; I literally don't even remember what the account was.

Mmm....I guess spy x family? I haven't written full fic for it yet, and it'd be nice to. The list of ships is longer, and I'm not going to bother with that, but needless to say I have a lot of passions lmao.

The ryudate fic I'm revising right the fuck now. No, okay, that's illegal, it doesn't exist in full yet, although you can read its revised first chapter here <3. That said, I find this decision kind of hard, so I'll give you a few that I've finished: Yours, Le Chasseur et le Démon (The Hunter and the Fiend), A Rational Man, The "Death" of Prosecutor Miles Edgeworth and a fic for a Pandora Hearts zine that hasn't come out yet!

Watching everyone flip out SNW is like watching a train derail. Like this is why I don't interact with the Spirk/Tos side of star trek. I have so far seen some ridiculous comments from Kirks new actor should be heavier and should basically just Shatner again to Spock is GAY as if it was ever confirmed in canon other than a one off joke in lower decks.

How about instead jumping straight down the writers throats for a story we don't even know yet. We wait a see. If Kirk turns out to be an Aos style interpretation, what is actually wrong with that. If Spock turns out to be straight, bi, pan, gay what does it actually matter when all anyone is going to do is retcon things through fanfics and fanon. LIKE NO SHIT HE IS WITH T'PRING THEY ARE ENGAGED. God forbid this might be a decent coming out story or a story about struggling with sexuality.

I don't know y'all, this is all just giving me flashback to how Michael was treated when she was announced in Disco and now look how beloved she is

Hephaestus- What is your favourite form of art?

Ok! so i have some very strong thoughts about surrealism. One, I absolutely love love love the 'pure psychic automatism' that Breton spoke of in one of the surrealist manifestos. I believe Freud and his dream interpretations laid the basis for it (I could be wrong it has been a long time since I took Art History). So 'Pure psychic automatism' was basically "“psychic automatism in its pure state, by which one proposes to express—verbally, by means of the written word, or in any other manner—the actual functioning of thought. Dictated by thought, in the absence of any control exercised by reason, exempt from any aesthetic or moral concern.”

this was at first usual kept to writings but I believe Max Ernst really brought in the visual aspects that were picked up by people like Dali.

Two, and the main reason I love surrealism is it is just unfettered from 'normal' art. You just let your mind wander and either write or draw your meaning in whatever pops up. Some of my favorite surrealists are Dalí

The Hallucinogenic Toreador, uses a technique called 'paranoiac-critical method, which basically is the artist invoking a paranoid state in the viewer from what I remember.

The other artist I really love is Zdzisław Beksiński. His work is usually split into two periods, one is a utopian realism that focuses on the doomsday like landscapes and architecture and the other is more abstract figures. Personally I love the utopian realism.

2022 Reading list

Started the year off with Space Opera by Catherynne M. Valente. Really loved the idea of this no name band is a fucking bop in outer space XD. Really good light read and fun, basically space eurovision but instead the prize is you get to live.

Then I read 1984 by George Orwell, fucking god I love this book so much. The themes are just peak, the fact that we are basically living in this timeline is just peak like wow. Five stars. Great book. Take it from the random internet person.

[9:47 PM] Laughing together, we enter our shared bedroom and get on our respective sides of the bed. It is not long before I begin to flip every which way on the mattress like a snake in agony. You think it is just me being hot but little do you know my back has not cracked in 13 years and bending myself so far back I turn into an ouroboros is the only way I can try to feel good again

[9:49 PM] You laugh and kiss me oh so tenderly on the cheek while I am spitting hissing and desperately trying to shape my body into the most abhorrent fucked-up modern art piece to brush this cosmic realm. You say that I always do the funniest things to make you happy, and I believe it.

[10:02 PM] I have not stopped moving. Always very careful to not invade your side of the bed, but always moving. A few bones have crunched, but it’s not enough. I need more.

[10:03 PM] You pull up a movie on your phone for us to watch together. It is the same we watched on our second date. I had picked it out and you hadn’t yet seen it at the time; you were crying into my shoulder by the end while I laughed quietly and hugged you and handed you a box of tissues, then said to wait until you saw the bit they added after the credits.

[10:28 PM] I try my best to stay focused, I really do. But the colors are blurry and the words are slipping from my mind and I try to grapple with the meanings and emotions of the character as though I am trying very hard not to slip in a wet bathtub. A couple tears slide down my face. I am trying to hard to keep still now, but the itching just underneath my skin is intensifying. Everything feels so wrong. Were these once my favorite characters? Everything looks so different to me now.

[10:33 PM] You pause the movie and toss the phone aside, then turn sideways on the bed to face me, one hand resting on your cheek as the other comes up to briefly rest on my shoulder as I turn and twist and writhe around in my impossible task. You ask if I need a doctor. I manage to look at you for just long enough to subtly shake my head. You sigh, but say that you understand. You know that I am not good at asking for help.

[10:36 PM] You get up and announce that you’re going to take the shower that you definitely should have taken before this time. You start to say something, but the words quickly die in your throat. As you leave the bed, you joke about how you don’t want me to die while you are gone. I gather up everything within me to smile at you for just long enough, but you are already turning away.

[10:38 PM] I so badly want to say I love you. But I don’t know if love is the best word. Perhaps I mean appreciate, or cherish… it doesn��t seem to matter now, anyway. You’re not here. If I could even find it somewhere within my small, fleshy form to speak, would you hear? …

[10:38 PM] The shower clicks on. You would not hear. What good are words if they fall out of the air before they can reach their destination? I am nearly out of energy. I can’t keep doing this. I think I am drowning, or suffocating, or something or everything at once. Perhaps it is better if I left. I think that you may be happier that way, and that thought fills me with an intense fear.

[10:38 PM] I go my entire life needing to be… needed. But is that really it? Is that the best I’m going to get? How much of my thoughts were predetermined from the moment of my birth, and how much was what I learned to think myself? Am I loved? I feel as though the answer should be obvious; it’s only a room away. I must be weak for not knowing for sure, I decide, and with that thought, that terrible ache in my stomach and the wrongness of my chest ever since I was a little kid, I begin to cry.

[11:13 PM] You come out of the shower. I am not there anymore. Perhaps I once was, but the entity beneath the covers on my side of the bed can no longer be identifiable as me. It is a thing, vaguely humanoid at best, distorted and maimed and broken in a million different ways. Exactly how tall I used to be, there is a glitched version of myself, one where I spent days trapped inside my head until I failed to recognize my humanity entirely. I’ve twisted myself into the fourth dimension, and in the process become something that you could never hope to even begin to comprehend.

[11:34 PM] You don’t leave the room. You stay. You linger around to listen to my cries, some of the quietest screams to have ever been uttered. You notice the tear-stained spots on the pillow and blanket and with a pull, you draw yourself closer and carefully climb back under the covers with me. It must be so incredibly painful to enter a world in which you do not belong, the gorgeous colors that only shrimp can see floating in front of my eyes as I heave and sob and turn again and scream, except the sound is choked before it comes out. I have never felt the urge to scream before, not since I was a little child who was taught to early how to hide it. All of my imperfections wrapped up in one beautiful, animal-like guise, what must have been centuries in the making. Generations stacking upon generations, and you find yourself wondering, how could this be? How could the world be so cruel so as to forsake such an insignificant being?

[11:58 PM] You cannot find it within yourself to comfort me any longer. While at first you may have tried, at any attempt for contact I seem to flicker beneath your touch, a ripple of water under the moonlight, flinching back as though it physically pains me to be around you anymore. Eventually you stop reaching out and simply scoot to the very edge of your side of the bed, turning— but this time away from me— and drifting off to sleep under the lullabies of my pained cries.

When you wake up the next morning… I don’t know what happens after. I won’t be there anymore. My time may not have been easy, but it taught me a lot about what it means to be human.

I do hope you can find it in yourself to forgive me, or, better yet, forget about me. Start anew. Don’t let me hurt you in any way. I hope you know I loved you, but that the feelings don’t matter if they’re never said aloud. I love you so much.

Bit of a follow-up to another post I did a while ago.

Been meaning to do this for a while: the many different inspirations that went into the Margaven! Margs come in a variety of forms, but most margavens are dancers. Here’s your standard marg of ambiguous gender. We make a lot a jokes here about what they are, but within those jokes there seems to be a discrepancy about margs are based on. Some people see a cow, some people see a deer, a horse for some folks, a lion for others, and some people even see a fuzzy dragon. I think that’s all very interesting (and an indication that I mixed my species pretty well if no one animal sticks out!) So, without first ado, let’s take a look~

1 - The Ridge Mane is actually based on equines, particularly zebras and horses. The neck and tail may be connected by a dorsal mane.

2 - The Horns or Antlers are primarily based on Deer or Bovines, but can ultimately be inspired by anything with antlers. The comb antlers were the product of me thinking “what if they had sideburns, but horns instead of hair”. Ironically, I don’t draw many comb margavens lmfao. Like reindeer, both sexes have antlers and like moose, the more symmetrical the rack, the more attractive the wielder.

3 - Margaven ears have a variety of shapes, but they are generally canid in shape. This lad, and Xaallo, both have ears inspired by the god Anubis, who is a jackal. Dobermans were also an inspiration; some margavens with naturally floppy ears will actually get them cropped. It’s considered professional and intimidating.

4 - The eye of the margaven is perhaps it’s only feature that hasn’t changed a bit since the very first iteration of the margaven. They are actually a combination of Kerrigan from Starcraft and Bonobos, the lesser known cousin of the Chimp. The shape of the iris comes from Kerrigan and the black sclera comes from the ape!

5 - The barbels sometimes found on margavens come from both catfish and eastern lungs, moreso the dragons through. Margaven were supposed to be the oldest of the species and the whiskers sort of give them a majesty and implied wisdom the other aliens don’t have (ironically, only Xaallo has barbels at the moment lol). While we’re here, the head shape of the margaven was loosely based on Aladar from the Dinosaurs movie, just mostly fuzzy. Not sure why I kept the snout scaley...

6 - Speaking of Majesty, the wreath mane comes right on down from lions! As a former fan of the lion king, it was only natural one of my favorite animals made it into my original species. The wreath mane would encompass both blue and red lines.

7 - The forearm scales were actually pulled directly out of the furry fandom off of the lesser seen and depicted anthropomorphic avian characters. In particular, from a certain blue jay and griffon.

8 - Naturally, though, I put my own spin on the forearm scales but having them end in cloven claws rather than avian talons. Margavens weren’t birds nor were they true mammals. Cloven hands were borrowed from minotaurs of mythology, particularly the ones from the first Narnia movie.

9 - The body of a Margaven is actually supposed to be more lycan inspired (though my art may not be expressing that very well...). Particularly, the Van Helsing werewolf. I was obsessed with that movie as a kid, and that werewolf is still the best depiction of them, over 15 years later. Margavens can shift from two the six limbs as needed, similar to the werewolves. The decision to add four arms came from Goro, Kintaro, and Four Arms from Mortal Kombat and Ben 10 respectively. Ironically, my main lad only has two arms lmfao

10 - The hooves of the Margaven are primarily reindeer-like; large and wide to prefect sinking in snow or sand. However, they can be full-hooved or one-toed, like a horse, but this is uncommon. Only about a third of the population have this hoof type and the majority of those are clashers. Hooves may have feathering, which of course comes from horses.

11 - And finally the tail. Looks like a wolf, but it’s actually more long-haired feline; like a maine coon. Most margs have big, bushy tails, short tails, or heavy tails.

Lucifer:

It’s canon that Lucifer plays the piano.

Ability: 12/10

Though he doesn’t get to play often, his performances always blow your expectations away.

His form is perfect, his playing his perfect, he is perfect.

There’s no pianist who can play better than him.

Probably invented the piano.

Tell him his playing is lovely and it’ll inflate his ego.

Mammon:

Flute!

Ability: 10/10

No, this isn’t me being biased because I played flute and Mammon is my favorite, hush! 😤

I think I saw a fan art of this once somewhere on Pinterest is it kinda just stuck..?

Lucifer made him learn it back in their Celestial days to keep Mammon occupied when he couldn’t.

It actually worked very well because Mammon will do anything to get noticed by Lucifer, and Lucifer always praised him when he did good.

Mammon still practices when he’s alone and no one is there to tease him though.

Leviathan:

Synthesizer!

Ability: 10/10

Of course Levi would play something electric.

He learned it out of simple curiosity.

And because one of his favorite anime protagonists knew how to play one.

And because he wanted to be like an anime protagonist, he’s really good at it.

Satan:

Clarinet!

Ability: 9/10

Satan was taught by Mammon and Levi how to play the clarinet when they were teach him how to be more than just wrath.

Of course he can play well, he refuses to fail at anything.

However, his favorite thing to do with the clarinet is to make that loud, squeaky, annoying noise in Lucifer’s ear when he least expects it.

Lost many clarinets due to that.

Secretly has one hidden somewhere in his room.

Asmodeus:

Harp!

Ability: 8/10

Of course it had to be something romantic.

He doesn’t play often, but he’s still pretty decent.

Why should he bother playing when he can just convince someone to look into his eyes to seduce them?

Does it to show off mainly.

Beelzebub:

Drums!

Ability: 7/10

He keeps trying to eat the drum sticks…

“What? They look like bread sticks!”

He’s actually pretty good and can hold a beat when he isn’t trying to eat his drums.

The only reason he got into percussion was because Lucifer was forcing Belphie to learn an instrument and he wanted to stay near his twin.

Belphegor:

I saw a card where Belphie was playing the violin, so I’m sticking to that.

Ability: 8/10

Another brother who’s good at their instrument but has no desire to play it.

He’d rather be sleeping.

Was forced to learn to play an instrument by Lucifer, so he chose violin.

Just wait until he figures out how to annoy Lucifer with it-

Diavolo:

Trumpet!

Ability: 1/10

Well, there had to be some brass somewhere right?

WRONG! Woodwinds are superior. I’m joking please don’t kill me-

Has no musical ability what so ever.

Honestly he just belts on the thing.

Is he even trying?

Came across a trumpet once, and begged Barbatos to teach him how to play.

Completely forgoes the lessons and does whatever he wants.

Barbatos:

Bells and triangle!

Ability: 11/10

Did you really think he would suck at something?

The man is a butler and Diavolo’s permanent babysitter, he has to be able to do whatever Diavolo demands PERFECTLY and THE MOMENT HE DEMANDS IT.

Never plays unless Diavolo tells him to though, he’s embarrassed by it.

Simeon:

Flute No.2!

Ability: 7/10

He’s good at it, he just doesn’t have the time to practice.

He’s too busy taking care of Luke and doing angel stuff.

And simping for MC with everyone else.

He’d love to play for MC if they asked though!

Luke:

Clarinet No.2!

Ability: 4/10

He’s learning.

He’s doing a good job, but he’s still in the learning stage.

He’s learning it for Micheal.

Because he wants to impress him.

Why else would Luke do anything?

Because he would love to play for MC but only if they ask.

Solomon:

Conductor!

Ability: 10/10

The only human in the band (unless MC is a part of it too).

He’s been alive for so long he’s bound to have tried nearly every instrument in existence.

But alas, none really stuck out to him.

He loves bossing demons around though!

Especially Lucifer.

He likes being a conductor because he can improvise whenever he wants and no one can tell him he’s wrong.

Because he’ll threaten to shrink them if they try.

Creates really abstract versions of popular songs because if this.

They all still turn out really nice, somehow.
