got a request via comment for a part two with the undatables for this mangled wings prompt! been working at trying to incorporate raph into my works so this will be my first post with him in it! part one can be found here
if you haven't done lesson 76-19 (yes i did have to look up the exact lesson haha) there are spoilers below for simeon
enjoy!
Mc with mangled wings p.2
Diavolo
he's always been very empathetic, and he immediately tries to help you in any way he can
he offers you all the moral and emotional support he can offer
he also tries to help you work through it and may know the right people to help you restore what you once had
whatever you need, he will help you as best as he can
Barbatos
when he learns, you're not so sure about how he feels since his expression remains exactly the same
but inside, he's filled with a seething rage that he rarely feels and is something only few can recognize
suddenly, all those that hurt you are begging for forgiveness
when you ask him, he says nothing and offers you a tea party with all your favorite things at it
Simeon
he's very open about how
however, something he'll never tell you is how afraid he was of suffering a similar fate
he's grateful he didn't fall like the brothers did, but now he's just floating in a weird in between
it's an odd bonding moment between the two of you, being outcasted, but part of him feels like you could connect more with the brothers than him
Luke
he's so horrified that people that you once trusted could do that to you
he hugged you and almost started crying while apologizing
after he learns what happened to you, you suddenly find a lot more specialty treats left on your bed that are always right up your alley
while he thinks it might bother you to bring it up directly, he's always asking how you are and how you're feeling
Solomon
he's seen a lot during his lifetime, so while this doesn't phase him too much, that doesn't take away how upset it makes him
he hates seeing you in pain, and as a human, he's known a lot of that
even though you're not, he feels as if the two of you can bond over understanding each other when nobody else does
he hasn't suggested it to you yet, but he's been trying to create something that may help you to restore what you once lost...
Mephisto
you've never seen him act more sympathetic
his facade drops and you can see how much he actually cares about you
with his heart on his sleeve, he shares everything
he lets you know you're welcome in his arms anytime if you need anything, and while he won't admit he had the conversation with you, his actions change
Thirteen
at first she's outraged, but eventually calms down once she sees that you're not as upset
don't give her any names or she might accidently knock over their candle while working
when it comes to be their time naturally! she emphasis naturally, you can come help if you want
reaping is something she does respectfully and this is no exception, but she'd do anything for you
Raphael
he's very serious as usual when he offers to hunt down who did that to you
he wants to seek vengeance on your behalf
even if you tell him not to, part of him will always be thinking about doing it anyways and is always listening for details about them
from then on, anything you ask for, he's getting it done 100% if not already

Prompt #76
"This is ridiculous - I'm not doing it," the hero said.
The villain huffed. "Should have thought of that before you broke the rules."
"The rules are stupid, I just--"
"The system is stupid," the villain cut in before the other could continue. "It is also very fragile. If you want to reap the rewards of it then you have to learn to stay in line."
At their side, the hero flushed, fists clenching as they started to pace. "I still don't get why it had to be you. Couldn't they assign someone else?"
The villain couldn't help but chuckle at that. Their lips twitched upwards in a practiced smirk, expression sharp as they studied the other.
"Just lucky I guess," they teased. "But don't worry: it's only six little months of villainy and then you can get your shiny hero status back. That's all. And with me as your supervisor, well...how bad can it be?"

I would like to get to know my local fic writer hopetorun! Specifically, I would like to know 1, 8, 11, and 76 and 77 for home by now!
1. Do you prefer writing one-shots or multi-chaptered fics?
one shots for sure! i haven't posted something as multi-chaptered in the traditional style (one chapter at a time) since like ... my fanfiction.net/star wars message boards era. my current writing process and the way i want my stories to pull together just doesn't lend itself to that posting style, which is what it is though i do think it's a really fun way to build community.
8. Do you prefer the beginning, middle, or end of a story?
i love writing beginnings! i love establishing a setting or a world and getting all my characters into their little situations. i basically can't start writing a story until the opening scene or moment plops itself into my head fully formed. please always imagine me as the me sowing/me reaping meme but it's me sowing tantalizing little tidbits into my beginnings and then furiously trying to make sure they're all tied up at the end.
11. Link your three favorite fics right now
what if i want to link more than three. what are you going to do about it. anyway here's some fics i've been thinking about a lot!!
ain't it easy? by stereobone (masters of the air, buck/bucky, 30k, e, definitely read the tags) which was just such a satisfying read for me. bucky is down so bad. he's trying so hard to have his shit together. great use of sex to move the character arcs forward.
peacetime like a liminal space by mercess (masters of the air, buck/bucky, 17k, e) in which bucky is such a mess. very sweet tho. i love love.
the chimneys hardly ever fall down by redbelles (masters of the air, marge/buck/bucky, 10k, e, wip) which is only two chapters but i read those two chapters and have been frothing at the mouth ever since. author if you're seeing this please know that i am lying awake at night thinking about this story.
The Greatest by wearemany (matthew/pomo, 12k, e, wip) ... what am i supposed to say here. i feel like if this is your bag you're probably already reading this story but yk. i sure am enjoying it.
laundry and taxes by @bropunzeling (matthew/leon, 10k, e) universe-swapping my beloved!!
76. Did you have any ideas that didn’t make the final cut of [Fanfic Name]?
ooh the original version of home by now (the one that existed in my head, not one that ever got turned into words) leaned a lot harder into the complicated legacy vibes with matthew and keith! i'm a little bummed i didn't thread it through well enough and ended up choosing to axe most of it rather than expanding on the theme. i would really like to write something that explores the complicated emotions around legacy and being surpassed by your kid/surpassing your parent and idol.
77. Do you have a favorite scene you’ve written from [Fanfic Name] story/chapter?
it's the scene in leon's kitchen but it's also just every scene with matthew and chantal. sorry to be predictable.

Hundreds of Jewish anti-war demonstrators have been arrested during a Passover seder that doubled as a protest in New York, as they shut down a major thoroughfare to pray for a ceasefire and urge the Senate majority leader, Chuck Schumer, to end US military aid to Israel.
The 300 or so arrests took place on Tuesday night at Grand Army Plaza, on the doorstep of Schumer’s Brooklyn residence, where thousands of mostly Jewish New Yorkers gathered for the seder, a ritual that marked the second night of the holiday celebrated as a festival of freedom by Jews worldwide.
The seder came just before the US Senate resoundingly passed a military package that includes $26bn for Israel.
UN rights chief ‘horrified’ by reports of mass graves at two Gaza hospitals
The protesters called on Schumer – who is among a minority of Democrats to recently criticize the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu – to stop arming Israel’s military, which relies heavily on US weapons, jet fuel and other military equipment.
“We as American Jews will not be used, we will not be complicit and we will not be silent. Judaism is a beautiful, thousands-year-old tradition, and Israel is a 76-year-old colonial apartheid state,” Morgan Bassichis, an organizer with Jewish Voice for Peace, told the crowd.
“This is the Passover that we take our exodus from Zionism. Not in our name. Let Gaza live.”
The mass arrests came after the seder rituals. Speakers included journalist and author Naomi Klein, Palestinian activist Linda Sarsour, and several Jewish students suspended from Columbia University and Barnard College over the protests that have rocked US campuses in recent days.
Rabbi Miriam Grossman, from Brooklyn, led a prayer before the first cup of ritual wine. “We pray for everyone besieged, for everyone facing starvation and mass bombardment.”
Klein spoke after eating the bitter herbs that represent the bitterness of slavery at the seder. “Our Judaism cannot be contained by an ethnostate, for our Judaism is internationalist by its very nature. Our Judaism cannot be protected by the rampaging military of that ethnostate, for all that military does is sow sorrow and reap hatred, including hatred against us as Jews.”
Jewish communities have often used Passover to protest about global injustice. Tuesday’s protest, organizers said, was inspired by the 1969 Freedom Seder, organized by Arthur Waskow on the anniversary of Dr Martin Luther King Jr’s death. The original Freedom Seder sought to connect the Jewish exodus story with the struggle for civil rights in the US and against the war in Vietnam.
One protester, a 31-year-old Jewish woman who asked not to be named for security reasons, said: “Passover is about liberation. In our family, Palestinians have always been part of our celebration and mourning. The call for liberation is more important now than ever … As Americans, the billions of our tax dollars in the Israeli military bill is outrageous and horrifying.”

What is the purpose of Jihad?
Every Nation has ideals, which inspire them. A nations endeavor to accomplish its ideals becomes huge as much as they deeply believe in them.
Founding a state, having a voice in the international arena, gathering same nations members under one flag are some of those ideals.
At this point, the Holy Quran makes a clear distinction between the believers and the unbelievers, Those who (truly) believe fight in Gods cause, while those who disbelieve fight in the way of taghut (powers of evil who institute patterns of rule in defiance of God). So (O believers) fight against the friends and allies of Satan. Assuredly, Satans guile is ever feeble. (An-Nisa Surah, 4:76)
The expression, taghut includes anything worshipped other than God. Satan is a taghut. Pharaoh like people who follow Satan is taghut. Undisciplined nafs (self) is a taghut Do you ever consider him who has taken his lusts and fancies for his deity? (Al-Furqan Surah, 25:43), (Al-Jathiyah Surah, 45:23) Quran, with these verses, takes our attentions to the ones who idolize their habitual evil lusts.
As you see, unbelievers follow those taghuts. They subordinate themselves to Satan, become prisoners of their evil-selves, and struggle under the leadership of evil people. However, their struggle is destitute of sublimity, a menial one. There are benefits to reap in the foundation of this struggle. They never hesitate to burn the world for their benefits. In fact, one can clearly understand their menial interests if only glances at wars in the last two hundred years.
They are after lands, colonies, new markets, and new resources; fight for supremacy over other nations.
There is no difference between the colonialist powers that intend to capture the entire resources of the world and a Roman Emperor who says, by showing the fig in his hand to his commanders, We did not invade the lands that bear this fruit yet! Let us organize a campaign and invade those lands. States and leaders changes but mentality stands still. History repeats itself at this point. First and Second World Wars are the proofs of this truth.
Believers, on the other hand fight in the way of God. And fight in the cause of sublime values. They make efforts in the way of Divine Will. Their struggle is a struggle of virtue. It is a remarkable issue of that Fi Sabilillah (in the way of God) reads wherever Jihad and Kital (war) expressions are made mention in the Quran. Any struggle, any war, which is not in the cause of God, has no value.
The Surah An-Nisa, verse 141, believers gain victory, unbelievers meet with a success, indicates such a significant difference between believers and unbelievers conception of war. While believers fight in the cause of God, unbelievers fight in the cause of worldly gains.
Quran sets the cause and the purpose of the struggle as follows:
And (if they still persist in unbelief and hostilities), fight against them until there is no longer disorder and oppression rooted in rebellion against God, and the whole of religion (the full authority to order the way of life is recognized) for God exclusively. (Al-Anfal Surah, 8:39) There are two objectives for Muslims in the verse; to root out the Fitna (sedition), and to make Gods religion prevail.
The term Fitna comes originally referred to the refining of metal (gold) to remove dross.
Tribulation, trouble, and disorder meanings derived from the original meaning. Torturing people because of their belief, intervening worship, forcing emigration; are all Fitna. Fitna is described in Quran in the following verse as, disorder (rooted in rebellion against God and recognizing no laws) is worse than killing. (Al-Baqarah Surah, 2:191) It should not be said there is nothing worse than killing, for, such circumstances which would make someone desire to die are worse than dying.
The following verse points out the sublime objective of Jihad:
Why, then, should you not fight in the cause of God and of the oppressed, helpless men, women, and children, who cry out: "O Lord! Bring us out of this land whose people are oppressors, and appoint for us from Your Presence a protector, and appoint for us from Your Presence a helper!" (An-Nisa Surah, 4:75)
The objective of the whole affair of religion belongs exclusively to God is to free humans from servitude to any other humans; and realization of servitude only to God. Jews and Christians are mentioned in the Quran as, The Jews take their rabbis (teachers of law), and the Christians take their monks, as well as the Messiah, son of Mary, for Lords besides God (by holding as lawful or unlawful what the teachers of law and monks decree to be lawful or unlawful, as against Gods decree), whereas they were commanded to worship none but the One God. Doubtless, taking anything or anybody for Lord besides God does not necessarily mean that they refer to it by the name Lord. As hadith explains the above given verse, accepting anything whatever rabbis and monks decree as haram (religiously forbidden) or halal (religiously permissible); is taking them for Lords besides God.
Islam must be announced in a free environment. Persons who want to convert should not be hindered, and anyone who wants to live according to this religion must be free to live it. They should not have to face the hardships and seditions.
Jihads objective is to provide freedoms and to overcome the obstacles. When obstacles are overcome, humans will yearn for one and only Divine religion, Islam.
Doubtless, the whole religion belongs to God does not mean that Islam does not grant rights to other religions, or it urges people to convert. Muslims never forced people from other religions to convert to Islam. Non-Muslims have lived in peace and in comfort within Islamic countries since the age of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).

Solidarity In Sonder
Excerpt from Chapter 8
Spring '76 - Katniss
That is until me and Peeta came along.
Suddenly, I feel very protective of my mentor, and swiftly the misery I feel at his misfortune is replaced by outrage. He should NEVER have been left alone. The Seam should have offered solace, should have cared for him in his hour of need, regardless of how detached and unresponsive he was.
Embittered, I spit “Why did you let him push you away? You should have been there for him.”
Looking me directly in the eye, pitifully yet prickly, with conviction, Sae snaps “I were. Fer about a year I helped nurse that boy through his mournin’, but after the 51st Games, there were next t' nothin’ anybody could do. Ya can't help someone who don’t want t’ be helped, Katniss.”
“Why what happened after the 51st Games?”
“Didn’t ya learn about the explosion of ‘51 in school?”
Contemplating, as my brows furrow in ignorance, shaking my head, I reply “No, not that I know of, but what's that got to do with Haymitch?”
“Yer guess is as good as mine, but he got it in his head it was all his fault.”
“Why?”
Enlightening me, Sae explains that Reaping Day in ‘51 fell on a Saturday, therefore, the miners were afforded a rare two day weekend. Previously, as there was no electricity in the mines, ventilation was provided by an iron fire furnace, while coal was hauled out on mule drawn cars. Stretching deep underground, with multiple sections, and a seam running roughly seven foot high, the West site was a valuable resource. As to why it happened, remains a mystery to this day, but at some point during the weekend the ventilation in the unmanned West mine, the largest in the District, grievously went down. First thing Monday morning, the captains rushed to get it back up and running before the workers started arriving for their shifts at seven o’clock. However, with their natural sixth sense for danger, the mules didn't want to go underground. In hindsight, this should have been enough of an adequate warning for the captains to double check the safety, but irregardless of the mules instinct, they gave the all clear to get to work.
On that horrific Monday morning, at seven-thirty, when most of the miners were deep underground, due to bad air, the worst explosion in District 12's history occurred.
Felt throughout the District, the eruption was so violent, that in spite of the wailing sirens, residents instinctively knew the cause. Shooting thirty foot into the air, a conflagration of fire set everything in its path ablaze and scorched the earth outside the entrance. So thick was the plume of smoke that it turned the blue sky black.
Inside, three hundred and fifty six miners died instantly. When they were exhumed, most were so badly burnt they were unrecognisable, or so horribly mangled and crushed by rock falls they were hard to identify. Others were smothered to death by smoke, as after the initial blast, the very air itself was alight due to loose coal dust. However, twenty miners managed to navigate the chaos and barricade themselves inside a pocket of clean air at one of the working faces of the mine, but unfortunately oxygen was depleting quickly. Rescue crews scrambled to recover and remove the dead, put out the ongoing fires, ventilate the mine, and negotiate the new terrain. Nevertheless, even with an influx of Peacekeepers, deployed to the District to aid in the rescue attempt, it took five days to reach the remaining miners, and by the time they did, they too had sadly perished. In total, three hundred and seventy six miners died, while many more were left maimed and disfigured due to their proximity to the entrance.
Grief fell upon the District, as each and every family in the Seam suffered loss.

Today I've been digging a LOT for official DS2 gameplay statistics and it's impossible to find actual stuff. Wish someone archived the data in waybackmachine but it might not have been within it's capability to record cuz it was behind dropdown menus so anyways...
This is the thing I knew existed and soooo many places site that IGN article specifically. Of note: (March 2014)
Data provided by From Software reveals that the Fume Knight from Crown of the Old Iron King is statistically the most punishing boss in Dark Souls 2, defeating challengers almost 93 percent of the time. The Ruin Sentinel gauntlet wins the prize for the single most-frequented boss encounter among all Dark Souls 2 players. Heroes have pitted themselves against the Sentinels almost 25 million times, with an average success rate of 76 percent across all platforms, meaning the Sentinels win about one out of every four attempts.
That article however has absolutely ZERO SOURCES :/ So! I searched. I found a total of 3 articles talking about stats and the other 2 thankfully DID SITE THEIR SOURCES.
March 2014
the Xbox 360 side of the site claims 1,311,973 total deaths, while the PlayStation 3 side reports 2,991,976.
April 2014
which enemy was killed most? If you answered "Stray Hound," reward yourself with a cookie and a pat on the back. As of this writing, PlayStation 3 players have killed 78,396,878 of these easy foes, whereas Xbox 360 players have only felled 32,200,775 of them. The runner-up in deaths is the Hollow Royal Soldier (Greatsword), dying 65,805,375 times on PlayStation 3, and 26,948,637 times on Xbox 360. The enemy that has perished the least is the Prowling Magus. PlayStation 3 players have only reaped the souls from 228,949 of them, and Xbox 360 have only racked up 83,934 kills against this adversary.
These are really cool stats from early in the game's life and they're basically all that remains from it. Where is the info from? Now I know, thanks to the previous 2 links, they're from Beyond the Bonfire/farfire.darksoulsii.com a site that no longer exists. So now I had a direction.
The data nerd I am would've loved seeing this back in the day. At this point I knew I would never find a full list for any part of it but I needed to figure out what it looked like at least. So, of course, the next step is waybackmachine and it doesn't quite give me things to work with cuz the data was behind a dropdown menu and it didn't collect the numbers at the time so, what we're left is just... The skeleton of the website and a couple articles on it. You can look at these if you want, they're actually pretty damn cool (and donate some money to wayback while you're at it if you want). farfire international https://web.archive.org/web/sitemap/http://farfire.darksoulsii.com/ darksouls 2 dot com https://web.archive.org/web/sitemap/https://darksoulsii.com darksouls dot jp https://web.archive.org/web/sitemap/http://info.darksouls.jp
So, if I couldn't find it to take pictures of, I had to look for pictures of it. And 2014 means the best place to look is forums. The following is all I could find and they're a combination of Reddit, GiantBomb, SomethingAwful and Fextra forum searching. The Hunger Games - 3.5
the casting, the introduction to the world of Panem specially district 12, the costumes for the capitol, district people and tributes, chef kiss to Jen acting when before entering the arena, the brutality of the blood bath, Peeta along Katniss the bow and she smiling (so pure), the great closing scene with Snow.
👎 the shaky camera, the obvious lost of raccord in “I volunteer” scene, black buttercup, the directing of Katniss and Peeta in the cave, Peeta lack of weapon at the end.
Catching Fire - 5
👍 Great dialogue, next level of design production for the districts, capitol and the arena, the opening scene, showing Katniss ptsd, Katniss and Peeta’s distance at the beginning and eventually their reconciliation, the visit to district 11, the tour in general, the “-will you stay with me -always” scene great adaptation for the books, showing the sparks of the rebellion in the districts, the scene of Snow mansion, the reaping scene, Effie butterflies dress, the introduction of the victors, next level tribute parade, the costume of Katniss and Peeta in the parade ufffff, the painting of Rue, Finnick (no need to say more), the interviews scene, Katniss wedding dress turning into a mockingjay, Katniss entering the arena, the arena itself, the psychological brutality scene of jabberjays, the perfect “I do. I need you” scene, the scene when Katniss blows the arena and Snow watching, when Katniss learns that Peeta is in the Capitol, the ending scene Katniss fiercely looking directly to the camera/us.
👎 the extra and unnecessary Katniss and Gale kiss.
Mockingjay Part 1 - 4.5
👍 the opening scene with Katniss says her list, the dark and serious tone of the movie, Katniss visiting a destroyed district 12, Effie, the district 8 scene and action sequence, Katniss and Gale arguing over Peeta interview, Katniss singing the hanging tree, the sequence of districts rebelling, Snow trying to subdue the rebellion, Katniss shattering watching Peeta suffering, the sweet moment between Katniss and Prim telling her about her training to be a doctor, Katniss realizing what Snow is doing while playing with buttercup, Katniss and Finnick taking about how Snow is using Peeta, the roses scene, the rescue sequence with Finnick dialogue, Snow telling them is a trap, Finnick and Annie reunion, Johanna in very bad shape, Peeta attacking Katniss scene, the ending scene with Katniss seeing Peeta through the glass.
👎 the eliminated scene of Finnick in boxers

Day 1 - Cross
Syngigeim couldn’t help it. Tears began to trickle down her cheeks. She closed her eyes and tilted her head up, hoping to stem the flow just a little. She was alone. Everyone close to her giving themselves up to make a path for her. Or else an infinitesimal distance away back home.
She opened her eyes and glanced forward ahead at the lonely world, a fragment of one that Meteion found...and at the glimmering bridge ahead.
Her path was clear.
Shadows began to form around her. Were they the spirits of those lost? Or something more? It was along her way forward and so she strode towards it. She thought of this lost world. Where all life was gone without a trace. Meteion said she found nothing and yet-
If you need a push, I’ll be right there behind you.
Syngigeim stopped. And laughed. She smiled, pressing her hand up against her heart, where she could feel a warmth blossom. Of course it was him. She set forth again, her stride steady.
Do not despair. You are not without allies.
Of course, she thought. She turned her thoughts towards those back home, awaiting her return. And there was still hope, was there not? By the matter that she still drew breath, that before her was that bridge, the breeze upon the wind, they weren’t fully gone. Not yet.
What we have sown in blood, we have reaped in suffering, and it can not go on.
Syngigeim’s smile faded but she kept her pace steady. She fought and struggled and in the process, hurt others. Taken lives. Bloodstained were her hands...but she still had to try.
Upon the souls of they who have sacrificed themselves to pave the way for peace, we will never abandon our cause.
She had to try. To struggle. To believe in that brighter future. For those who we’ve lost. For those we can yet save. For everyone else who was struggling at the very same moment.
While it is true that man succumbs all too often to anger and avarice, he may yet overcome his baser instincts through the forming of bonds with others.
It always felt a little silly when it was presented in stories such as these. For what can a person do on their own? Walk on, her mind countered. Walk on and keep moving. For their sake.
Such victories are rarely won without sacrifice. But the prize is worth the price.
Syngigeim took a breath. Sacrifice. She wanted to stop. Wanted to stop and break into tears anew. She focused instead on the next spirit ahead of her, of the bridge she was coming up upon.
And we for our part are glad indeed to be able to welcome friends both old and new…
New. New friends. As of this point, she could only envision a faceless mass in front of her, in shadow. What would they be like? What were they doing at this moment? She reached the bridge of light.
Save your tears for the morrow. You may be sure we will have ample cause to shed them, be they for joy or for despair.
She gave a short snort at that. It was a little late for that but perhaps when this was over when journey’s end came, she could finally allow herself to feel it in full. “That she may find happiness at journey’s end…” she whispered.
From tragedy and sacrifice, we rise to greet a new dawn.
This place was a place where worlds ended. But she suddenly thought of the fact that day and night still came over those planets. The universe was destined to have all light vanish one day...but what caused life in the first place then? Questions yet unsolved.
A future shaped by the choices we made, in ways we could have never forseen.
Who would have thought that a search for a friend would end up to all of this? Lost, struggling in the dephs of despair, her mind countered. He’s still fighting, she counter-thought. Still fighting. Move on.
Yet miracles do happen. So let us pray, and will our friends home.
She gazed ahead. She was near the end of the bridge. There was a way to do just that...at the risk of undoing all of the protection she had.
I won’t stop praying until I know they’re safe.
Still, she’d find some way shouldn’t she? For amidst all of this loss, she kept a kernal of hope in her heart. The warmth she kept alive in her chest.
Strong art thou, mortal.

London Calling: Anti-Capitalist Anthem
By Erin Wilson
When I got my license at 17 years old, I certainly did not have my own car to drive. No matter whose car I took—my mom’s, sister’s, or brother’s—music was always what I cared about most on my drive, even the five minute ones to and from school. Usually anxious about going wherever I was, my mood was changed by the music. Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours made me feel energized; Lorde’s Pure Heroine, sad and angsty; Bahamas Is Afie to feel calm.
Driving my mom’s car, equipped with the modern luxury of bluetooth and Spotify, meant I could listen to anything I desired. My brother’s and sister’s cars were older, which meant I could listen to the radio or CDs. My brother had a strongly different taste in music, so none of his CDs compelled me and I often opted for the radio instead (104.5, Philly’s alternative rock, was my favorite). My sister had a small collection of CDs, which included Fleet Foxes’ self-titled album, mixtapes from boyfriends of present and past, and The Clash’s London Calling.
I grew to love this album, knowing nothing else of The Clash. As I paid more attention to their lyrics, I noticed that the revolutionary tones of the 1979 album still rang true in my senior year of high school, 40 years after its release.
In fact, due to their commercial success, The Clash is a notable band of those in punk subcultures that concerned themselves with politics. Though they were criticized for signing with CBS as contrary to punk (Anderson and Heibutzki), there is an inherent impossibility in trying to widely spread a message while also remaining mostly underground and unknown. And although they critique capitalism while reaping its benefits (once success is achieved), how else is one expected to operate under the conditions in which they exist? Rather than becoming anti-punk, the deal allowed the band to move leftist, revolutionary ideas into the mainstream.
Punk evolved out of the social and economic crises in Great Britain in the summer of 1976: high unemployment, a dire heat wave, and the conservative policies and beliefs of the National Front on the rise (Denyer). A movement hopeless with the current situation, yet holding on to a tinge of hope for change in the future, led to the formation of The Clash. Originally a five-man band, they eventually consisted of Joe Strummer and Mick Jones both on vocals and guitar, Paul Simonon on bass, and Nicky “Topper” Headon on drums (Bindas). They got their start opening on tour for the Sex Pistols’ Anarchy in the UK in ‘76, and took off from there (Wilder).
Their revolutionary sentiments existed from the start with their singles “White Riot” and “1977”. Two years later, in 1979, just six months after conservative Margaret Thatcher was elected Prime Minister of Great Britain, The Clash released their third album, London Calling (Bindas). They were informed not only by the social conditions around them, but their personal experiences too. Paul Simenon worked in a factory to save money and gain admission to an art college, which he eventually abandoned for rock and roll. Art college was “bollocks” (Jolly). In a 1979 interview with Punk Magazine, Joe Strummer made his opinions clear:
"First of all let me tell you my personal politics are and always have been and always will be to the left…I’m not into fucking people working away in factories doing useless boring jobs just for some cunt to take the rake off. But I don’t want to say that I’m a socialist or that I’m a communist ‘cause I fuckin’ hate parties and party doctrine…When anybody has a great idea they go and make it a manifesto, a party. Like, I don’t want anyone tellin’ me what I gotta do, right?" (Jolly)
The views of The Clash are evident in their eclectic musical style and evocative lyrics. The title track, “London Calling,” sums up the decaying mania felt by the punks:
The ice age is coming, the sun's zooming in
Engines stop running, the wheat is growing thin
A nuclear era, but I have no fear
'Cause London is drowning
I, I live by the river
Climate change, drought, hunger, nuclear power and threat: the problems of capitalism in 1979 still rang true when I first heard it in 2019, and still today in 2023. In “The Guns of Brixton,” they address police violence in the London neighborhood of Brixton, which had a large Afro-Caribbean and working class population. Simonon himself grew up in this area.
When they kick at your front door
How you gonna come?
With your hands on your head
Or on the trigger of your gun
You can crush us, you can bruise us
And even shoot us
But oh-oh, the guns of Brixton
And finally, in “Death or Glory,” they make their plans of resistance clear:
We're gonna fight you, brother
We're gonna fight 'til you lose
We're gonna raise trouble
We're gonna raise hell
We're gonna fight you, brother
Raise hell
Death or glory
Becomes just another story
Unlike other punk bands, The Clash advocated for means of resistance that did not involve violence, which was often present at punk rock gigs. According to Elin Wilder for Punk, “in fact they abhorred [violence], and were one of the few bands to continually speak out against it; their ideal was to convince kids to focus their anger toward fighting for a common cause instead of fighting each other.” (p. 52)
Gen Z, my own generation, is highly active in advocating for common causes in today’s society, in which the same capitalist-caused issues addressed by The Clash, plus hundreds more, run rampant, if not worse. Now is a better time than ever to look back to The Clash, London Calling as well as their other albums, and the plenty of other frustrated, politically-motivated punk groups of the 1970s and ‘80s. What can we learn from their groundbreaking subculture? What worked and what didn’t? How should we address the ills of capitalism today?
Now that I have my own car, my grandmother’s 1997 Saturn, I have some freedom to choose the music that changes my mood. However, with a broken cassette player, radio is my only listening option, which means there are limitations to the discography I hear on my drives. Although I don’t frequently hear The Clash on the radio, I’m learning to appreciate local radio again, and listening to songs by chance; music that I would typically not seek out on my own accord. It is also a delightful surprise to turn on a station and hear some of my favorite songs and artists, like Feist on WXPN, as well as music I once loved and haven’t heard in ages. There is so much that we can learn by looking back on the art and music of the social movements that contributed to the groundwork of our culture today.

Announcement//Anuncio
There had been a thunderstorm and wifi is down. I had not clue what happened. It was just a thunderbolt closed by (it almost gave me a heart attack) and then nothing, nada, no internet (wifi) at home. I’m using my phone data, but won’t last that long if I keep it up. So, if I’m online until further announcement then I’m on my phone, I may don’t be online that much. And the service is treating on coming on the 14th the closest. 😓😓 Wish me some luck.

This is for the Danny Phantom mini bang as part as well of @invisobang! I had the honour of working side by side with the amazing @another-shameless-fangirl and @saxonroa with their writing skills and his artistic skills respectively. So go and read: “Reap What Was Sown” by @another-shameless-fangirl on AO3 or here. And of course see @saxonroa art’s here.
Summary:
Desperate to find their missing son, Jack and Maddie summon Phantom for help as the last one to see Danny alive. Their years of hatred for ghosts have come to a boiling point and Phantom is not cooperating. The hunters will have to try to convince the ghost to bring their son back to them by any means necessary. Good or bad, at the end of the night, the family will have to reap what they have sown.

I got the honor to participate in the big bang of Danny Phantom this year, thanks to @invisobang for organise it. I worked side to side with @realititrip and their amazing art skills and of course @brokeitwiththepowerofmathamatics and his amazing writing skills. You should go and read the fic: “Night at the High School” by @brokeitwiththepowerofmathamatics on AO3 or here, and see of course @realititrip‘s arts here and on their twitter as a whole video there. I also pointing out that, that cloths and specially Danny’s logo is design/done by @realititrip who allow me to used that.
Summary:
Ever since the accident two years ago, Danny has had what some people would call luck when it comes to the paranormal. When he heard that Sam wanted to use that "luck" in help with a class assignment, he knew it was a bad idea. It was an absolutely terrible idea. And yet, he was gonna go along with this anyways.

When he heard that Sam wanted to use that "luck" in help with a class assignment, he knew it was a bad idea. It was an absolutely terrible idea. And yet, he was gonna go along with this anyways.

Gideon Flynn (he/him). District Six Mentor. 76 Victor. 48. Robert Downey Jr.
Unlike most of the District Six citizens, Gideon Flynn was one of the lucky ones. His parents had been very skilled mechanics, their dedication to their craft catching the eye of The Capitol. Thanks to the generosity of The Capitol, Gideon never went to bed hungry or freezing. However, that didn't mean the hardships in the District were lost on him. He had friends in the lower class that struggled, that he tried to help without the Peacekeepers catching him. Handing off extra food or any extra blankets, Gideon tried to help when he could. One of those friends was his best friend since childhood, Ripley Ford. Ripley was one of the few that saw past the fact that the Flynn's got special treatment, that accepted Gideon's kindness and saw him for who he was, instead of taking his snark and charm as arrogance.
Since his family had been doing pretty well, Gideon never had to put his name into the tesserae extra times. Still, each time Reaping Day came around, he still held his breath, hoped he nor his friends were picked for The Games. Two other kids had been Reaped for the 74th Hunger Games, his last Reaping year, and Gideon felt guilty breathing that sigh of relief. Now that he was free of the Reaping, Gideon started working with his parents in their shop, picking up the same mechanic skills that his parents were renowned for. Gideon learned quickly and actually liked the work. He was fascinated with how things worked; taking them apart and putting them back together himself. His parents were proud that their son took to the work so quickly, glad that he was willing to do so. They hoped he would carry on the shop once it came time for it.
Then the Quarter Quell happened. Rebellion had been attempted against The Capitol, but it fell just as quickly as it started. And in recompense for the rebellion against the great Capitol, the Games started to occur bi-annually, and the Reaping age was extended to 25. Gideon Flynn and Ripley Ford-- both 20 years old-- were Reaped for the 76th Hunger Games. Anger didn't even begin to cover what Gideon felt once their names were called, but he knew he had to channel that anger toward something more productive: getting Ripley out of the Arena.
The two friends worked together to try and help each other make a good impression on the Capitol. Both he and Ripley were not very strong, but they were smart and knew how to play the crowds. If they could earn enough support and sponsors in The Capitol, maybe they could have the upper hand. So Gideon used his over confidence he built up and his charisma to play the Capitol’s citizens and win them over to his side. Many of the Tributes didn’t like his attitude, but Gideon could have cared less about them. As long as he focused on his training and earned himself a good score, he would actually stand a chance to last long enough and help Ripley. For his resourcefulness and methods of setting traps, Gideon earned himself a Training Score of 8. He never did like the concept of the Hunger Games, but since he was thrust into the Capitol’s twisted game, Gideon figured he had no choice but to play ball.
The 76th Hunger Games took to the desert, but it wasn't just sand or a wasteland, not entirely. The setting was a city, the architecture similar to a Spanish villa. The center of the city was an open courtyard with the Cornucopia taking its usual spot in the middle. Supplies spilled from the mouth and a few feet in front of it was a large, beautiful fountain that had a hologram with the countdown. The villa was gorgeous on the first day, but once night fell over the Arena, everything turned red. A red, cloud was unleashed into the Arena, an airborne toxin that burned the lungs with each breath and blistered the skin on contact. High exposure could kill a Tribute within minutes. The only way to escape the cloud was to hide within the buildings in the city, which forced the Tributes to face each other within the shelters. Pockets of the cloud lingered around the Arena during the day, but the red toxic overcast lingered for the rest of The Games and cast the Arena in an eerie red glow.
Gideon had run for the Cornucopia, going against his Mentor's wishes of just making a run for it. He managed to grab a pack before taking off into the city. Inside the pack had been an empty canteen, a coil of wire, and a pocket knife. Eventually, he and Ripley had met up, Ripley having a cut across her forehead. But she had managed to get a little luckier in her haul from the Cornucopia, holding a knife and some food. Using the wire, Gideon managed to rig a trap near the doorway of the room they sought shelter in. While they tried to sleep, the Careers tried to break into their shelter, the only alert being the trap that killed the boy from Two. His death bought Gideon and Ripley time to escape, but the attack also painted them as targets for the Careers throughout the rest of the Games. Still, the two managed to survive and evade the group for a few days, using the cloud and gifts from sponsors to stay alive.
Their luck would eventually run out, however. When they thought their problems only lay with the Career group, it was when the red cloud had managed to seep into their shelter that things became dire for them. Ripley was coughing violently, her skin beginning to blister before she could even warn Gideon to run. Gideon was feeling his own skin burn, but he was able to escape from the sudden heaviness of the cloud. He felt terrible for leaving Ripley behind, and he knew he would forever be haunted with the image of her literally tearing apart in front of him. He had very little time to grieve, though, when the remaining Careers advanced on him. Gideon stabbed the girl from One with his knife, but then he became overpowered by the boy from One. The girl from Two, bitter over the death of her fellow Tribute, planned to make Gideon’s death slow and painful. The knife from the girl lodged itself in his shoulder, the girl twisting the blade slowly while the boy from One held a struggling Gideon in place. Gideon still had his knife, however, and gutted the boy from One while he still hovered above Gideon. Shoving the body toward the girl from Two, Gideon rolled over and barreled into the girl, sending her into the thick red cloud to choke and burn on the toxins. Gideon fell to his knees just as the red cloud dissipated from the arena. The echo of the last cannon resounded through the center of the city, signaling Gideon Flynn's victory in the 76th Hunger Games.
Gideon had changed drastically since the 76th Hunger Games. He had become angrier, jaded by everything since leaving the Arena. The relationship with his family became more distant, to the point that Gideon moved to the Victor's Village by himself. A lot of that anger had been chalked up to being thrown into The Games when he thought he had been out, but most of it was survivor's guilt. Each night when he tried to sleep, he saw Ripley writhing on the ground, gasping for breath as her skin blistered and burned from the cloud. His plan had been for her to survive The Games, not him. She deserved to win far more than he did. It didn't help that he had to go back to The Capitol less than a year later, forced to be a Mentor to Tributes that barely had a chance in the Arena. And surely enough, he lost both the kids from Six in The Games. Game after Game, year after year, it was all the same.
Gideon used alcohol to cope with his PTSD and night terrors, though he did turn to tinkering in his garage just to keep himself busy in an attempt to give himself a healthier outlet. But Gideon was still angry, resentful toward The Capitol. He tries his best to be a good Mentor to the District Six Tributes, tries to help them any way that he can. Despite being angry and frustrated with the position he was in after all those years, there are moments when Gideon shows a softer side, but only to those he cares about. While he speaks his mind with little thought to the consequences, when it comes to speaking to someone he admires or respects, Gideon will be more careful with his opinions and words. He is loyal to the people he considers friends, and will do anything to make sure they are safe.
+ dauntless, adroit, resolute - stubborn, blunt, reckless
