Even in a moment when everyone in the arts laments the inability to afford “this or that,” the classed art world is largely on vacation for most of August, or shuttered until fall programming and the big fall exhibition begin and the art fair season resume. This summer’s New York art season has been tepid and, for the most part, uninspiring. I’ve even noticed Artforum—which I thought was “canceled,” yet continues to appear in “Must See” screenshots—alongside other art publications covering work they once ignored, the kind of art that in the 2010s would have appeared in Juxtapoz or would be featured in Hypebeast now, not even Cultured.
