sometimes i think about how happy Katniss was when they rescued Peeta in Mockingjay, running to him giddy and giggling, making up scenarios inside her mind, dreaming about kissing him, like for a moment despite all the horrific things she had to go through she was genuinely, completely happy and then the absolute, crippling tragedy of it being taken away when he tried to kill her and she found out that they had tortured him and erased every part of him that loved her and not only does he hate her, he’s actually afraid of her and is convinced she’s not a real person and then i want to jump off a bridge

you smile softly as finnick hands you a steaming cup of coffee in your favorite mug— it was one he had gifted you a few years back, adorned with small owls because he had known prior they had been your favorite animals (how he knew this, you were unsure). he takes a seat beside you on the couch, but not before making sure to take half of your cozy blankets and making himself warm with them also. he throws a glance (or longer than, whatever) over to your happy self as you take a sip from your coffee

“did I make it to your liking?” jokes finnick. you roll your eyes but your uncontrollable smile gives your mood away instantly

“yes, it’s lovely” you confess, placing it on top of the blanket pile you had created on top of your lap. finnick takes the opportunity to intertwine your newly freed hand with his. your eyes grow heavy at the newfound warmth. “I’m tired”

“give the caffeine about ten minutes and you’ll be bouncing off the walls”

“mhm, no” you say wearily, but nonetheless take another sip to hopefully fulfill his statement. when you yawn, however, you know you’re done for. finnick frowns and takes you onto his lap, careful of your fill mug in your hands. he allows you to take a few more sips before he removes the cup from your palms and places it atop the coffee table. with free arms, you wrap them around his neck and rest your head on his shoulder sleepily

“you can rest for a bit, lovely girl. I’ll be here when you wake up”

“promise?”

“yeah, I promise”

you know it’s more sacred than any holy oath ever formed. internally, you’re screaming and giggling and kicking your feet at this. “m’kay. only for a bit”

“sounds like a plan”

and it indeed was a plan. soon after, you’re lulled to sleep with the feeling of his handing running up and down your back, the faint fire crackling noise, and a cup of coffee thinking through your system

as i’ve been rereading the hunger games i’m more and more convinced katniss is autistic. i don’t think this was on purpose i think her inability to realize when people feel things for her, her in depth description of yearning for comfort routine and her description of her world was meant to paint her as the “not like other girls” character but there are so many moments where i recognize elements that just make sense when you look at her through the lens of an autistic experience

No one hates the Capitol more than me and I want to help but I just keep thinking even if we win this war, what happens to Peeta? I mean I know he’s not safe there but he’s definitely not safe here.

hunger games rant bc its so good

thinking about how mags was the last tribute we met to really understand how far the games had come in the 75 years they had been put on. she won her games the year after lucy gray baird. she had watched the games from their inception up to the arena being completely destroyed. the very next year, she was being dragged into an entirely new atmosphere- she had watched her friends go and be starved and publicly humiliated before getting thrown into a room. suddenly, when she goes, she is given a completely different treatment. She gets actual training, she gets an interview to market herself to sponsors, she gets the victory tour and the lavish wealth of being a victor. she saw the public perception of the games shift after the 10th games, only for snow to completely manipulate the public by turning them from a brutalistic display into this almost theatrical pageantry of violence. she watched as the games developed more and more from there- she saw the pageantry build and build and build as the districts grew poorer and poorer.

but she also witnessed the first victor from twelve, as well as the last victors from twelve. she saw the same firey spirit in katniss that she saw in lucy gray baird- just like snow did. only to her it was a glimmer of hope. a glimpse into what could be when someone successfully stands up to the capitol.

but then, a year after twelve’s second female victor won in a defiant display of pageantry- just as its first female victor did- mags was being dragged back into the games. just like the first time she, watched as the games were taken to a whole new level- as they were once again turned into a statement.

she died in the arena before she could witness the full-circle moment of the image of the arena falling around the rebellious victor from district twelve for a second time, but oh my god are the parallels not cool as fuck
