General thoughts on the former novel writing month:

Their unapologetic stance on AI is super offensive. Like, what is even the point if AI can just write 50k words for you???

Yes, I am boycotting the organization. Just need to save some of my previous novel info before deleting my account.

BUT.

I still have a novel idea that I’ve been obsessing over since April and am already mentally prepared to write in November. So.

I will still be writing it but I’m calling it the 50k 2024 challenge.

Haven’t decided which word tracking website to use yet.

The motivation that came from the community is what I’m gonna miss (my local writers group disbanded after the ML fiasco), so I need a new one.

Need suggestions!! Looking for writing sprints and general pep talks!

I'm only gonna keep talking about these characters for the rest of the month so I may as well share a bit of info!

RK the Werewolf

"Oh that? That's RK! Y'know, because he almost became roadkill on the front of my Tahoe the other night."

On the run from the only pack he's ever known, RK collides with the human world one fateful night - literally. Fearful of everything but with nowhere else to go, he remains in his wolf form and takes a chance on the human that hit him in the first place.

His dark hair was not long enough to fall over his eyes but still long enough to be terribly mussed from sleep. One sleeve of his shirt had pulled up, exposing the length of his wrist and the tanned skin that disappeared behind the fabric. He was … attractive. I could not deny that.

Hitting a wolf with his car was not something he intended, but that single event will change Levi's life forever. He's a practical man, a fixer, so he does what he can to fix the wolf up and give him time to heal. But the wolf heals faster than should be possible, and Levi is too intrigued to let him go.

"Well, I suppose that's fair," Serena begrudgingly agreed. "As annoying as you are, the world would be a darker place without your ugly mug in it."

The last thing Serena expects is to get woken from her sleep with the news that Levi has hit a dog. But when the dog turns out to be a wolf with broken bones that heal overnight, she knows there is far more to this wolf than meets the eye. After all, she has secrets of her own.

Meta trained on pirated books—and writers are not having it

ICYMI: Meta has forever earned a spot as the archetype for Shadowy Corporate Baddie in speculative fiction by training its LLMs on pirated books from LibGen. You're pissed, we're pissed—here's what you can do:

The Author’s Guild of America—longtime champions of authors’ rights and probably very tired of cleaning up this kind of mess (see its high-profile ongoing lawsuits, and January’s campaign to credit human authors over “AI-authored” work)—has released a new summary of what’s going on. They’ve also provided a plug-and-play template for contacting AI companies directly, because right now, “sincerely, a furious novelist” just doesn’t feel like enough.

No strangers to spilling the tea, the UK’s Society of Authors is also stepping up with its roundup of actions to raise awareness and fight back against the unlicensed scraping of creative work. (If you’re across the pond, we also recommend checking out the Creative Rights in AI Coalition campaign—it’s doing solid work to stop the extraction economy from feeding on artists’ work.)

Museums and libraries: fodder for the new culture war

Not to be outdone by Florida school boards and That Aunt's Facebook feed, MAGA’s nascent cultural revolution has turned its attention to museums and libraries. A new executive order (in that big boi font) is targeting funding for any program daring to tell a “divisive narrative” or acknowledge “improper ideology” (translation: anything involving actual history).

The first target is D.C.’s own Smithsonian. The newly restructured federal board has set its sights on “cleansing” the Institution’s 21 museums of “divisive, race-centered ideology.” (couch-enthusiast J.D. Vance snagged himself a board seat.) (Oh, and they’ve appointed a Trump-aligned lawyer to vet museum content.) The second seems to be the Institute of Museum and Library Services, a 70-person department (now placed on administrative leave) in charge of institutional funding. As we wrote last week, this isn’t isolated—far-right influence overmuseums and libraries means this kind of ideological takeover will seep into every corner of the country’s cultural life.

Meanwhile, the GOP is (once again) trying to defund PBS for its “Communist agenda.” It’s part of a larger crusade that’s banned picture books with LGBTQ+ characters, erased anti-racist history, and treated educators like enemies—all in the name of “protecting the children,” of course.

NaNoWriMo is no more; long live NaNo

When we initially signed on as sponsors in 2024, we really, really hoped NaNoWriMo could pull it together—but its support for generative AI and dismissiveness toward its own audience prompted us to withdraw our sponsorship, and many Wrimos to leave an institution that helped cultivate creativity and community for a near-quarter century. Now it seems NaNo has shuttered permanently, leaving the community confused, if not betrayed. But when an organization treats its community poorly and fumbles its ethics, people notice. (You can watch the official explainer here.)

Still, writers are resilient, and the rise of many independent writing groups and community-led challenges proves that creatives will always find spaces to connect and write—and the desire to write 50k words in the month of November isn’t going anywhere. Just maybe... somewhere better.

The continued attack on campus speech

The Trump administration continues its campaign against universities for perceived anti-conservative bias, gutting federal research budgets, and pressuring schools to abandon any trace of DEI (or, as we wrote on the blog, extremely common and important words). In short: If a school won’t conform to MAGA ideology, it doesn’t deserve federal money—or academic freedom.

Higher education is being pressured to excise entire frameworks and language in an effort to avoid becoming the next target of partisan outrage. Across the U.S., universities are bracing for politically motivated budget cuts, especially in departments tied to research, diversity, or anything remotely inclusive. Conservative watchdogs have made it their mission to root out “woke depravity”—one school confirmed it received emails offering payment in exchange for students to act as informants, or ghostwrite articles to “expose the liberal bias that occurs on college campuses across the nation.”

In a country where op-eds in student newspapers are grounds for deportation, what part of “free speech” is actually free?

We now live in knockoff Miyazaki hellscape

If you’ve been online lately (sorry), you’ve probably seen a flood of vaguely whimsical, oddly sterile, faux-hand-drawn illustrations popping up everywhere. That’s because OpenAI just launched a new image generator—and CEO Sam Altman couldn’t wait to brag that it was so popular their servers started “melting.” (Apparently, melting the climate is fine too, despite Miyazaki’s lifelong environmental themes.) (Nausicaa is our favorite at Ellipsus.)

This might be OpenAI’s attempt to “honor” Hayao Miyazaki, who once declared that AI-generated animation was “an insult to life itself.” Meanwhile, the meme lifecycle went into warp speed, since AI doesn't require actual human creativity—speed-running from personal exploration, to corporate slop, to 9/11 memes, to a supremely cruel take from The White House.

“People are going to create some really amazing stuff and some stuff that may offend people,” Altman said in a post on X. “What we'd like to aim for is that the tool doesn't create offensive stuff unless you want it to, in which case within reason it does.”

Still, the people must meme. And while cottagecore fox girls are fine, we suggest skipping straight to the truly cursed (and far more creative) J.D. Vance memes instead.

Accomplishments.

I thought I was forgetting something and then I realized it was my monthly update. Oops. So even though we’re a third into the month, here’s what I did in December.

To be quite honest, most (if not all) of what I did throughout the month was work on the Holiday Special. I’m really glad to see that it was well received (honestly, even though I’ve been doing this for a while, putting anything out is stressful so it’s always great to see positive feedback). I’m a bit of a slow writer so it took me a while, but I’m glad it paid off. I always love writing extra content for you guys anyway.

In terms of Chapter 12, I’m back at it this month and slowly chipping away at it. Still no estimated time for when it’ll be released, but I’m hoping Q1 of 2025. Of course, the break last month didn’t help in terms of productivity and word count, but at least it refreshed my mind. I had just finished up writing a big branch (probably close to 15,000 words) so I was pretty exhausted and tired of the content. That happened a lot when I was writing Chapter 11, which eventually led to a big burnout that I am trying to prevent this time around, because, well, it was not fun. But now that I’ve stayed away from Chapter 12 for a bit, I feel excited enough to go back.

I’m currently writing Eliana’s initial meeting with the Hunter and am trying to pinpoint how I want her to come off. Of course, I have a set personality for her, but determining character traits is one thing—actually making sure they are portrayed in writing is another. It’s been a bit challenging so far, but I do usually say that I like a challenge, so I think it’ll be fun.

I’m estimating the final chapter word count to be somewhere around 45-50k—possibly more if I decide to torture myself with another branch—so I’m at least halfway or a third of the way there. None of the chapters have ever surpassed 70k and I doubt this will, so I don’t have to worry there.

For the rest of January, I’m focusing on just getting as much done as possible. My four year anniversary (wtf) is also coming up for this game, so I’m trying to decide what to do for it. I want to write another short, but that would delay Chapter 12 even further so I’m not sure. Perhaps just a set of drabbles? Let me know if anyone has any ideas. As always, take care of yourselves <3

Just a heads up, I'll be doing a little writing challenge during November (no, not NaNoWriMo, fuck that AI endorsement shite).

I'll be trying to write at least 1k words per day and finish that godsdamned Assassin’s Creed WIP I've had in the works for literal YEARS. Dunno if 30k words will even be enough to finish it, it's already currently at 50k and I'm nowhere near done, but at least I'd make progress on it.

So I won't be quite as present here. I will post some more of my Twisted Stories since I have a bunch in advance, and I'll come back with more Twst nonsense every once in a while, but yeah, a little quiet month in terms of social media for me.

Plus I'll be working more actively on that Wings!AU booklet so I can have something to show before 2024 ends!

Because Louis is his emergency contact, for one, and both their families know how much they mean to one another. Someone would’ve called, if something had happened, unless Zayn was dead in his own house, and, oh God, what if Zayn’s dead in his own house and Louis has been mentally calling him a dickhead while he’s rotting on the bathroom floor?

Spoiler: Zayn isn't dead. There is however, suddenly a baby.

Made Marion Development Update, July 2024

Hello everyone!  Hope you're enjoying the summer, and my best wishes to all of you on the eastern half of North America who have been dealing with hurricanes.

Project Status

Unfortunately, my fatigue and other medical stuff prevented me from finishing Will Chap 3 this month. To give you an overview of where we are on the route as a whole:

Writing: Will Chapter 3/4, close to 50k words out of about 80k

Coding: Half of Chapter 1, waiting on editorial

Editing: Writer edits complete on Chapters 1-2, waiting on reader edits.

Backgrounds: 100% complete.

Sprites: 3 NPC sprites needed (can launch without but hope to have).

CGs: 2/5 complete.

Cut-Ins: 1 of 3 nearly complete (the most complex one).

So we still have a ways to go, unfortunately. After many many tests, I'm officially being referred to an internal medicine specialist to see if we can improve my fatigue. I don't know how long it will take me to get in to see them, but hopefully not too long!

I've been real cute and slightly vague about this blog in 2024 but it's time to be real

writing a novel is not as easy as writing replies, not just in the length of things but in everything else too. my execution, the way characters are built, the world that I'm setting up and building. Most everyone here knows who she is and what the basics of her story are, but I'm on a learning curve for writing right now, and my attention and all my passion has been going towards it. You can probably tell from the lack of activity across all my blogs.

I have never finished anything, but I am slowly finishing this novel. I've had short interests and intense interests that I've thrown myself into and always felt like a bit of a failure when I couldn't follow through. I've never finished anything, but I am finishing this novel. It's always been about this muse. My first blog was this muse back in 2012, she was always on my mind even when on other blogs, even when I was gone from tumblr for several years, she was on my mind. Her story keeps growing and growing and it's forming into something I can really see other people enjoying. It's always been about her, it's the one thing I can focus on without becoming distracted. maybe this hyperfixation will fade, but it's been over `10 years, so I'm doubting it.

I've been posting little chapter drafts but it's at nearly 20k words and set for maybe 50k more. It's a big challenge and I didn't think I was up for it at first but now that it's coming along, it's becoming one of the most important things in my life that I'm choosing to focus on. I'll be frank, I was going to delete everything today and never come to tumblr or even discord again, but that's not the way to go. I still need a hobby with my passion project, and I can't stand the thought of leaving everyone behind. you're all precious to me, no matter how often we've talked or written together

I've decided to keep my blogs, I can't delete them and move on like nothing happened. I can't just forget memories of people or writing. When I get to the points in the novel where she's older and more in her personality, I'll most likely be on here to creatively write. Longer replies, a different approach to how I do things, changes to my rules, things like that.

I have three novels planned for her. So, I hope y'all will look forward to them.

I first signed up for NaNoWriMo in 21 October, 2005; I logged into NaNoWriMo 5 September, 2024, in order to delete my account.

Thanks to the entity now embracing A.I. as a "Tool."

(After looking back at my stats).

There were a couple years where I tried to do multiple challenges in a year, burning out, not participating, and then coming back.

According to my profile, there, I started 19 distinct projects, between the November marathon proper and "Camp NaNoWriMo," with a total of 605K-and-a-bit words typed out. My last registered project was in 2020. I did not reach 50K that year; I think it was about that time that I realized simply typing 50k words at breakneck speed did not lead to crafting a story I actually still wanted to tell, come December (what really kept me coming back, over and over in spite of that, was the social permission to make a pillow fort out of an imaginary world, where I could retreat from seasonal attitudinal depression, and other pressures; Pillow forts aren't meant to be permanent).

Back when I started, in 2005, NaNoWriMo was a much different beast than it is now... There were no corporate sponsors, and the only prize you could claim was a winner's T-shirt. And the social vibe was a lot more like the spontaneous writers' communities that sprung up on old school Bulletin Board Systems, IRC chat rooms (remember those?), and Usenet forums.
