General thoughts on the former novel writing month:

Their unapologetic stance on AI is super offensive. Like, what is even the point if AI can just write 50k words for you???

Yes, I am boycotting the organization. Just need to save some of my previous novel info before deleting my account.

BUT.

I still have a novel idea that I’ve been obsessing over since April and am already mentally prepared to write in November. So.

I will still be writing it but I’m calling it the 50k 2024 challenge.

Haven’t decided which word tracking website to use yet.

The motivation that came from the community is what I’m gonna miss (my local writers group disbanded after the ML fiasco), so I need a new one.

“You just did,” Louis smiled because Harry walked right into that one. “But I’ll give you another,”

Because Louis is his emergency contact, for one, and both their families know how much they mean to one another. Someone would’ve called, if something had happened, unless Zayn was dead in his own house, and, oh God, what if Zayn’s dead in his own house and Louis has been mentally calling him a dickhead while he’s rotting on the bathroom floor?

Spoiler: Zayn isn't dead. There is however, suddenly a baby.

Made Marion Development Update, July 2024

Hello everyone!  Hope you're enjoying the summer, and my best wishes to all of you on the eastern half of North America who have been dealing with hurricanes.

Project Status

Unfortunately, my fatigue and other medical stuff prevented me from finishing Will Chap 3 this month. To give you an overview of where we are on the route as a whole:

Writing: Will Chapter 3/4, close to 50k words out of about 80k

Coding: Half of Chapter 1, waiting on editorial

Editing: Writer edits complete on Chapters 1-2, waiting on reader edits.

Backgrounds: 100% complete.

Sprites: 3 NPC sprites needed (can launch without but hope to have).

CGs: 2/5 complete.

Cut-Ins: 1 of 3 nearly complete (the most complex one).

So we still have a ways to go, unfortunately. After many many tests, I'm officially being referred to an internal medicine specialist to see if we can improve my fatigue. I don't know how long it will take me to get in to see them, but hopefully not too long!

I first signed up for NaNoWriMo in 21 October, 2005; I logged into NaNoWriMo 5 September, 2024, in order to delete my account.

Thanks to the entity now embracing A.I. as a "Tool."

(After looking back at my stats).

There were a couple years where I tried to do multiple challenges in a year, burning out, not participating, and then coming back.

According to my profile, there, I started 19 distinct projects, between the November marathon proper and "Camp NaNoWriMo," with a total of 605K-and-a-bit words typed out. My last registered project was in 2020. I did not reach 50K that year; I think it was about that time that I realized simply typing 50k words at breakneck speed did not lead to crafting a story I actually still wanted to tell, come December (what really kept me coming back, over and over in spite of that, was the social permission to make a pillow fort out of an imaginary world, where I could retreat from seasonal attitudinal depression, and other pressures; Pillow forts aren't meant to be permanent).

Back when I started, in 2005, NaNoWriMo was a much different beast than it is now... There were no corporate sponsors, and the only prize you could claim was a winner's T-shirt. And the social vibe was a lot more like the spontaneous writers' communities that sprung up on old school Bulletin Board Systems, IRC chat rooms (remember those?), and Usenet forums.

FuckNoWriMo

Thank my spouse for the title ^_^

Obviously, with NaNo's recent press release, and my subsequent deletion of my account with them, I'm not doing NaNo this year, and likely - short of a massive backpedaling and apology I don't foresee happening - not doing it ever again.

But I love, love, the idea of a focused month of writing. I've done it successfully the last two years and it's been a boon to the massive number of WiPs I tend to keep rolling. And I really want to do a Double Goal at some point and knock an unforgivable 100k words in a month out of the proverbial park.

With that in mind I'm offering up this to anyone who wants to follow along:

This December I'm going to do a sort of Unofficial FuckNoWriMo so I can get my 50k writing challenge in for the 2024 year.

But for 2025 - and likely for years after, if nothing more official pops up - I'll be doing my FuckNoWriMo challenge in March. If it's a month that works for you, feel free to join me, and if it's not, then let me know what month does, and I'll do my best to support you as you do your own challenge. (or maybe even join in with you because I'm like that xD )

Whatever you do, hang in there, have fun with it, and if someone makes you feel bad for creating, eat them.

With the big annual novel writing month coming up there’s a lot of excitement and preparation going on. 

The thing is, while doing Nano can be a great experience, it’s definitely not for everyone.

It’s overwhelming to a lot of people, takes a lot of time and energy, and is notorious for burning writers out. Most people quit well before reaching 50k, and among those rare few that make it across the finish line, many end up creatively exhausted and don’t write again for months.

Personally, I find that a slower more persistent approach is far more effective long term.

What if, instead of spending hours a day grinding out words in a blur of stress and exhaustion, you could write your novel in fifteen to twenty minutes a day?

That is my challenge. On November 1st, join me for a SloMo WriNo. Spend fifteen minutes writing, every day (or most days, we’ll discuss that in a later post) for a year, and by November 2024 you’ll have a novel completed.

And drop by the WIP Project discord. We’ll be able to encourage each other, do group sprints and share our progress.

 Philon Awards 2024

After last year's successful relaunch of this beautiful celebration of fannish creativity, KiScon is honoured to once again host the Philon Awards. 

There are 8 categories: Short fic (word count under 10K) Long fic (word count 10K-50K) Novella/novel (word count over 50K) Podfic Traditional Art Digital Art Poetry Zines For each category the voters will determine a Gold (first place) and a Silver (second place) winner. Nominations for this year's Philon Awards are open now through August 31st.

You can nominate up to 3 works per category.

The work must focus on the pairing Kirk/Spock or Kirk & Spock. Slash (romantic and/or sexual relationship) and gen (friendship) are equally eligible. If a fic includes Kirk and/or Spock in relationships with other characters, be they canonical or original, this does not disqualify the work for the Philon Awards, as long as the focus is clearly on Kirk and Spock's relationship.

Art must feature Kirk or Spock or both of them; additional characters in the artwork are allowed, but no depiction of Kirk/Other or Spock/Other.

The work must have been created and published (print or online) after last year's nomination period. So everything from 1 September 2023 onwards until the end of the current nomination phase (31 August 2024) is eligible. Reprints or uploads of earlier works (e.g. a fic you wrote and published a few years ago and uploaded to the AO3 only recently) cannot take part in this contest. but the author of this one recently confided in me (!) that they aren’t letting their 2024 big bang get written without simultaneously working on REwriting what left of their 2023 big bang (which got eaten by gdocs mid-posting iirc, to the tune of something like 50k+ lost maybe? 😭) and basically it’s a sweeping soulmate AU but it ALSO has this free will factor that takes the potential “ick” out of the trope?

So if you’re okay with recs that are WIPs but only due to CIRCUMSTANCES and also are committed to being finished on a timetable that exists for ANOTHER challenge (almost like two challenges in one), then I’d propose the slow-burn/life saving soulmate power/deep deep love fic, ✨Made of Light✨ by hitlikehammers, for the fic on its own, AND also to help encourage the author to keep going with trying to write what is essentially two simultaneous big bangs (which is arguably insane)

Hello, from the One Direction Big Bang, Round 7!

This year, our fic fest is running from Autumn 2023 to Spring 2024! We're so excited to be back for another year, and wanted to take a moment to explain what exactly a Big Bang is!

There's a whole Fanlore wiki you can read about the history of Big Bangs, but to quote their intro paragraph:

A Big Bang (or "Bang" for short) is a specific type of challenge usually involving long fics and accompanying artwork. This type of challenge is a reprise of the old zine tradition of collaboration between artists and writers for internet fandoms.

The original Big Bang took place in 2005 in the Drarry fandom, but Big Bangs can be found in so many fandoms (I started counting to say if it was tens or hundreds, but I lost track and gave up). It's truly a wonderful and multi-fandom-wide thing.

Fandom to fandom it varies how long they consider Big Bang fics should be, usually somewhere between 10k and 50k, and here at 1DBB we ask for a minimum of 25k. Over the years, we've seen amazing art created to accompany the fics, from digital and traditional illustration, to collages and abstract art, to manips and trailers.

If you would like to take a look through the treasure trove of previous Big Bangs, the master collection for the last seven rounds is located at New One Direction Big Bang on ao3. There are also five previous rounds hosted by a different collection of mods who retired, and that can be found at 1D Big Bang on ao3.

WIP Pre-Intro: The Ruby of Ranpur

That's right! The Crime-Fighting Husbands are back for Unnamed Novel Writing Challenge 2024! I will be writing a 50k word follow-up to Til Death Do Us Part over the course of October and November (averaging 820 words a day), set a few weeks after the first story at the 1937 World's Fair in Paris.

Expect more reluctant detective work from Williamson Jones, more campy shenanigans, and much! more! backstory! Plus, Nazis, flirting photographers and a very suspicious mime. The spy vibes in this story are immaculate, though at its heart, it's still a goofy, gay whodunnit.

2024, Hello!

What a year it has been, right?

I usually try to talk only about warhammer 40k on this blog. I don't like mention if my personal life, or politics, or even other fandom, really. That said, this year was... Far from easy for me. Health problem, job problem, finances, politiques, (shout out to all the queer french canadian who are also scared shitless!), moving in a new place, insane inflation....

I had given myself the huge objective to publish 200k words for 2023. At the end, this is the result:

108k words. You can also add about 50k of unpublished original work. Here is the list of fic that I have published/updated in 2023 (by view count), and some little thought/insight on them:

Agency - My big fem primarch au. You can really see me grow, if you read it from start to finish. It's been *years* since I started this fic, at this point, the ending that I have planned is like my white whale. One day.... One day, I will defeat it. Terribly hard to write but SO satisfying

Tales of different lives - if Agency is my dark nemesis, than my planet swap is coming home to a soft bed. It's so easy and FUN to write that au. I know not everyone like the lighter take toward the world this one take, and that's ok. Sometime... It's just nice, to have softer things, especially after such a year.

Phantom of the (warhammer?)-pera - I am begging you. On my knees. Read this one. It's my fav thing I have ever written. It's so much fun. It's totally INSANE and I loved every moment of it. I want to go back and fight the formatting again, to finish implanting all the notes. They are SO much fun. Also has AMAZING cover art by @skrankku !

Five times People tried and failed to Seduce Roboute Guilliman to Chaos... - Absolute surprised to me how people loved that fic. Ngl, I was actually sick/very depressed when I wrote it, but it warm heart that other enjoyed it.

This Once Nearly Was Mine - This one does not count, it's @kingwithpaintedfingers AMAZING Vulkan's POV to Castle of Glass, my Mortarion/Vulkan soulmate au. I am amazed and humbled to be able to work with such a great writer, and be able to call you a friend. I HIGHLY recommend all their work.

Trust - I had to actually check that one, and turns out, it was the update to my Talos/Septimus fic! Can you believe that I forget my own fic?! I am silly. Surprisingly delightful. I need to write more of this ship.

Birdcage - written for an exchange, specifically for @funboxsupreme , another criminally good writer. This fic, in my humble opinion, is some of my best writing. Extremely dark, I also SOMEHOW managed some really cool "special effect" in it, and I am PLEASED with myself.

In the Garden - a VERY quick and horny piece for Nan, a PROLIFIC writer whom I cannot help but be in awe of (also heeeelp I don't have your tumblr, poke me and I will tag you!)

Old Crows and Young Cardinals - This is an interesting one! This fic seem barely started, but it's mostly because the rest of it require MASSIVE planning and careful writing, as it deal with time travel and has a stupidly complex plot. I cannot wait to unveil more of it.

By proxy - hehehe, another really cool gift for a friend, this time for Lieara/Allyria! Even if this list is making me realise how many of yall tumblrs I don't know. I feel like an Old man trying to remember phone number lmao.

Day 2 - Bootworship and Sister of battle - a fun little fic part of the "40 kink for 40k" challenge that I NEED to continue, started by the wonderful @iapetusneume . Also.... Lesbian. Need more Lesbian.

The only way - A other fic that I had completely forgotten that I wrote. It's such a strange feeling, to reread your own words and go "I did this??" It's not bad, but it was written during one of those hard period of the year, and as such feel extra alien to me.

Day 1 - Geneseed, but sexy and Homeworld - another 40k for 40 kink fic, this one was a LOT of fun to write! Amd kinda specifically made for @bobthebobhere , another good friend in this fandom!

The miracle of science (and children) - a gift fic that was supose to be part of an exchange, but took too long! This one is for @shootertron-stuff , an artist that I highly respect and love! If you like it kinky, go tead their stuff, they are an inspiration.

In the Lion's Den. - Hahahahahaha lmao. So, fun fact: On reddit, there is a user who post horribly misogynist/homophobic Tau torture porn with his OC chapter. I got mad, and wrote a spit gay porn fic of his OCs. To his credit, he rolled with it and was amused at it. I still don't like him, and never will, but I have his blessing to keep it up, so!

The Bird, The Wolf and the Keeper - a little experiment, in poetry format fic. I liked it well enough, and will attempt some more in 2024 I think :)

So.... 18 fics total. I think there should be pride in that. I like the variety of them, even if I want to push out more, do more unique and stranger fic, for 2024. It was a difficult year, but creating so much made it easier, made it more worth it. I am... Happy, with it all.

[ Our 9 year anniversary was a couple of days ago, but I didn't have the time to make a proper post. ANYWAYS HERE WE GO! I cannot believe it's been NINE YEARS?? I'm ????? One more year to go and I will have written him for a whole decade! ;O;//////

I'd like to thank everyone who have interacted with our blog during our 9th year! I've been blessed to receive a lot of asks, and it really motivates me to have so many people engage with my blog and show interest. I've gotten to write some really interesting threads, and built some good connections for Nnoitra, which has been awesome! :O I am blessed and thankful to have such amazing people around me who indulge me as I write my favorite man. Thank you all so much!

This year as been REALLY good for writing Nnoitra! The past years there has been a downward going trend of me writing less and less with each passing year. But! This year I've written 50k more for Nnoitra than I did last year ( and we still have over a month left! ). I'm STOKED to see this development! It means I've gotten to dedicate more time to him and since I love him SO MUCH that is obviously what I want.

For our 10th year, It'll be a big goal for me to find a ship-partner for Nnoitra in his main verse. Once 2024 hits, I'll start the "I write something everyday until Nnoitra falls in love"-challenge. xD !! Because I neeeeed progress for his story in main verse.
